Dementia services in action F
ancy a cuppa? Come along to the Glebelands Day Centre to see its dementia services in action. The specialist day centre, which is in Middle Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, is taking part in Dementia UK’s “Time for a Cuppa” event on 8 March from 1.30pm to 3.30pm to raise money to help the charity fund a specialist Admiral Nurse for the area. The centre specialises in providing support to adults with dementia or an acquired brain injury and it will be showing off its services to health professionals and carers of potential customers through a tea party and special film showing. It wants to invite potential customers and their carers as well as health professionals such as GPs to experience the day centre in action and to meet representatives from the Memory Assessment Service, the Alzheimer’s Society and the Dementia Crisis Team. From 2pm the Movies & Memories reminiscence project will be showing a film it has been making called 'A time to remember West Sussex'. Day Centre customers have worked alongside this seven-month project and have provided memories and stories that will be a part of this film. Movies & Memories is a reminiscence project that has been taking place across West Sussex. Peter Catchpole, Cabinet Member for Health and Adults’ Services, said: “We all know there will be growing numbers of people with dementia in West Sussex in the coming decades. “It is vital therefore, that we have day centres, such as Glebelands, to help in providing that care and that the wider community knows they are there and what they can provide for people eligible for that support.
Beach clean
Everyone is welcome to take part in the Spring Beach Clean organised by Friends of Shoreham Beach. Meet at 2.30pm on Sunday 17 March at the Old Fort – you can park free by the river towards the end of Harbour Way. At this time of year the longshore drift brings the marine litter towards the Harbour Arm. Remember that the March winds can be cold so wear warm clothes, stout shoes and gardening gloves if possible. Litter pickers and bags will be supplied – as will refreshments afterwards! There will also be a prize for the most unusual piece of litter found. For information call Joy Daintree on 01273 462584 or visit: www.fosbeach.com.
Facts on Song Thrushes Finally the clocks change at the end of March and we 'spring forward' into summertime. You may not need to change your alarm clock as, even in the suburbs, the mounting dawn chorus can wake you up. Our resident song birds, including the song thrush, are already in full song and proclaiming their territories. • Song Thrushes are familiar song birds, found in woods, hedgerows, parks and gardens - anywhere where there are bushes or trees - but their numbers have declined seriously since the 70s • They are smaller than a blackbird with brown upper parts and a pale, buff chest with dark speckles • These songsters live up to their name with a beautiful repertoire of over one hundred phrases, that are often repeated without a break. It’s also a song that becomes richer and more complex as the bird ages • They breed from March until July in a nest shaped like the inside of a coconut and just as smooth, often producing three broods of up to five bright blue, spotty eggs • They like to eat snails, worms, and fruit, often using a favourite stone or rock to smash open the snails’ shell If you would like to tell Sussex Wildlife Trust about the nature you see or hear please visit: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/wildlife/index.htm 4

Blooming flowers S
o far the early months of this year have been pretty much as expected with no real nasty surprises, so fingers crossed for the rest of the year. This coming month is one of my favourites; with everyone feeling like spring has arrived with the daffodils in bloom and more importantly the clocks changing at the end of the month, together with the long Easter weekend to look forward to. It’s like somebody flicks a switch and everybody goes out into the garden and starts getting busy. I love it! As long as things aren’t too wet then it’s time to start looking at giving the lawn its first cut. Make sure the blade on
6
the mower is sharp and start with a high cut on the first mow. As cuttings become more frequent then you can start to get the grass shorter. It’s well worth treating the lawn to a dose of fertiliser to give it a welcome boost after winter. These are widely available from garden centers in liquid or as granules. Make sure you follow the instructions as it’s easy to get over generous and end up burning the lawn by putting too much on. To really finish the job off give the edges of the lawn a good straighten up now whilst they are still accessible before the new growth takes over. Moving into the beds and you can start getting summer bulbs planted up, but be careful of any existing ones or spring bulbs as they start to die back. Don’t be too keen to tidy up the spring bulbs as they finish. They take nutrients back into the bulb ready for next year, so it better to let them die back naturally rather than cutting them off. It’s also worth giving them a liquid feed to help boost them ready for better blooms next year. In the greenhouse and on the window cill things should be really starting to get bust with sowing of seeds, whether they are flowers or vegetables. Remember to keep an eye on new seedlings and don’t forget to water them regularly. They can quickly dry out on a sunny day doing irreparable damage. Be prepared to thin them out so the stronger ones succeed and pot them on as they get too big for the seed trays. I always find its better to plant a little at a time over a period of time. That way you have a succession of flowers or fruit and you also have a back up if any get damaged or eaten. If you do spot damage in the greenhouse from a pest act quickly and have a good long hunt for the culprit. Last year one solitary snail did an unbelievable amount of damage gorging itself on my seedlings before I found him after a few days. I won’t tell you what I did with him! Whilst you’re getting everything ready in the garden for the plants, it’s also worth spending a little bit of time getting things checked out for your own little ones if you have any. Check out any climbing frames, swings, trampolines and other toys to make sure they’re still safe as we find they can rapidly deteriorate over the winter months. This really is one of the better times of year with the promise of warmer days coming and each one getting longer and longer, so you have time in the evenings to potter in the garden or play with the little ones. When will our interest rates go up? L
ast week the Mervyn King the Governor of the Bank of England predicted that inflation would rise from 2.7% to 3% by the summer, and would remain above their target of 2% for at least two years. He cited tuition fees and utility bill rises as being major factors, things that are out of the Bank’s control. The main tool the Bank have to control inflation is interest rates, but these are already at an all time low of 0.5%. A rise in interest rates would have an adverse affect on the recovery, so they are treading a fine line, they are aware of the inflation being above target, but also looking at the bigger picture.
How is inflation measured? It’s something we all talk about, but do we really know how it is worked out? One of the indices, The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is used by the Bank of England when they set the interest rates. The CPI literally monitors the price of a basket of goods bought for consumption by households in the UK. They do this by checking 120,000 prices each month from a wide range of shops across the UK, both online and with actual visits. They also monitor over 6000 households to see what they actually buy. These households include pensioners, families and single people, a real cross section, all with differing spending habits and needs. This gives them an average cross section of goods so that they can ‘weight’ the basket accordingly. Once they have the above figures, they combine these and average them out. This means that the actual inflation figure quoted does not relate exactly to any one particular household, it is a cross section. So, your household’s experience of the price increases could and will be totally different from others. So, although the Bank of England use the CPI figure to make interest rate decisions, the inflation figure should not be taken literally when relating to your own budget. If you are interested in calculating your own, there is a personal inflation calculator which can be accessed by logging onto www.statistics.gov.uk/pic. This should give you a true picture of your own situation.
What are the interest rate predictions? Currently many economists are predicting that rates will not rise until at least the end of 2014 as the Bank of England tread carefully to encourage economic recovery. Many feel that rates will not reach 1% until at least 2018. So, it seems we may enjoy low rates for some time to come.
Just to mention: If you are looking to move lender, now is a fantastic time. The Government are providing the lenders with money at very low rates, providing they lend it on. It’s called the Funding for Lending Scheme. This scheme has helped lenders offer very low fixed rate deals, but these won’t last forever, the scheme ends in December. So, if you are thinking of remortgaging, check out the rates now, don’t leave it too late. Proudly going back to our roots With the world's spotlight bathing the UK in glory last year, national pride is at an all-time high.
M
uch has been written about the benefits the Olympics have brought and it seems that one of the boons is a renewed sense of selfconfidence and a refreshed respect for the best of British. While the positive ripples are having a life-changing effect in the sporting and health fields, this tide of revived appreciation has swept through countless strata of UK life. And it seems that one of these is a return to the
10
country's classic staples — the Royal family and traditional family dinners. UK mothers have certainly come home to roost with Royal guests and classic dishes as the ultimate dinner party wish list, a new survey by The Red Tractor reveals. One in four mums said they would most like to invite the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge over to dinner ahead of Dame Judy Dench, Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and David Beckham according
to research by Red Tractor Assurance. And while most households enjoy watching cookery programmes, the reality of juggling the kids and running a busy household makes mums play it safe when it comes to cooking the evening meal, with over a quarter of families reluctant to take inspiration from television chefs. Just two out of 10 mums seek tips and recipes from home-grown mover and shaker Jamie Oliver ahead of Delia Smith and Nigella Lawson, Gordon Ramsey, Marco Pierre White and Heston Blumenthal don't come get a look-in. Despite all the wild and wonderful cooking books, TV shows and ethnic
restaurants, over 50 per cent of households opt to cook a traditional roast dinner with over a third taking the easy route and preparing the great British classic, apple crumble for pudding. Only one in 20 wanted to add some va-v-avoom to the dinner table and invite Shades of Grey author EL James. Interestingly, over a quarter of husbands polled said they would like to cook something new for their guests but over a half agreed that sticking to tried and tested favourites was the safest bet. And a remarkable 13 per cent of the respondents confessed that they wouldn't cook anything for their guests. Richard Cattell, Head of Marketing at Red Tractor which commissioned the study of more than 2,000 families, says, "We're aware that shoppers are faced with a variety of choices, both from the high street supermarkets and also when eating out. "The survey tells us that shoppers like to support British food, with more than 55 per cent already looking out for the Red Tractor logo when choosing their dish — a clear sign people care more about food which is produced to good standards of farming and Research by Red Tractor has also revealed that UK shoppers eating out and cooking at home would welcome a clear guarantee that food has been produced to good standards." Over half of people polled say they look out for a symbol which demonstrates that the food has been produced to a high standard, as well as a sign of origin. And when it comes to cooking and eating out, over a third of the shoppers surveyed like to know where their ingredients come from and prefer to source UK ingredients. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Shoreham in the 1960s I
n the late 1960s, life in Shoreham had a rather different pace and atmosphere. For one thing, it was a lot easier to park, with car parks at Ham Road, Middle Street, Ship Street, Tarmount Lane and Little High Street, all completely free to leave your car in. Paying the power companies was also more straightforward, as they had offices or showrooms in Shoreham, and there was only one to go to for your electricity and one for gas. The South Eastern Electricity Board was based at Electric House in Tarmount Lane and gas bills could be paid and new gas appliances bought from South Eastern Gas Board’s shop in Brunswick Road. Although the main post office was still in Brunswick Road, there were seven sub-post offices through the area, so it was a lot easier to avoid the queues at busy times. We had another bank too, The National Provincial, in the High Street, which had yet to merge with the Westminster Bank (which as now was in East Street). Among the smaller shops that we could visit was Shoreham Photographic at 94 High Street. Very useful in the days when taking photos involved frequent trips to buy rolls of film, or have the pictures developed. They would also photograph your wedding, and undertake commercial and aerial photography. Books, cards, stationery and gifts were all available in the Dolphin Book Shop at number 4 High Street. Two doors along at number 2 was the favourite haunt

of local children, the toyshop, Dennis Lee. The store had a terrific window display of every toy imaginable and inside, plenty of Corgi and Matchbox cars, or Britains farm and zoo animals to spend the pocket money on. It also sold bicycles and for a while Hoover and other electrical appliances. At 34 High Street was Funnells, selling carpets, furniture and fabrics including dressmaking materials. If you wanted to buy clothes rather than sew your own, you could have popped into Nanette, also in the High Street, which sold ladies fashions and knitwear from then popular household names including the science fiction sounding ‘Gor-ray’, as well as ‘Linda Leigh’, ‘Alison Jane’ and the still existing ‘Berketex’. Another popular shop for clothing in the late sixties was Marjorie Payne at 8 Brunswick Road who sold women’s underwear and hosiery, baby linen and also haberdashery. At 78a High Street was E.O Taylor who sold and repaired clocks, watches and jewellery. Number 41 on the southern side of the High Street was Franklins shoe shop, and at 69 High Street was Adamczyk, the continental patisserie, who could also make your wedding cake or supply ‘cocktail savouries’ for your party. At 70 High Street, The Don, sold sweets, chocolate and Walls ice cream. They were also an agent for King Of The Road coach tours. You could also book day trips and outings at the Southdown Bus Office at 86 High Street, close to where their green buses would stop to collect and set down passengers. It was
still the conductor rather than the driver who you bought a ticket from and there was smoking upstairs. Southdown also offered Express Services from London, the West Country, Midlands, North and along the South Coast. Leaving the High Street, in John Street, Elizabeth Ann sold babywear and school uniforms and Central Fisheries supplied fish and chips, frying 11.30 to 1.30pm and 4.30 to 8pm Tuesday to Saturday. At 19 East Street was the grandly titled Findlater Prentis Limited, an off licence. They acted as agents for Fremlins beer and were also willing to deliver. J. & G. E Styles, at 34 East Street was a greengrocer and florist who also supplied fresh farm eggs. In East Street, as today you could sit down for a hot meal or snack. This would have been in The Snack Bar, at numbers 8 –10. Conveniently it opened every day of the week from 8am to 8pm, so popping in for a cuppa after work was possible. At the railway station was the Station Snack Bar. There were crossing gates instead of barriers and Shoreham still had a signalman working these gates from the signal box. If the gates were closed, the steps beneath the track still had street exits, allowing pedestrians to continue their journeys even if the gates were closed for the latest British Rail service to arrive or depart. Shed break ins Local in Southwick Phone Scam and Shoreham Residents please be aware that there have been multiple sheds broken into at allotments in the Southwick and Shoreham area's. Damage has been caused to sheds where locks have been broken and access gained. Power and standard tools have been stolen. Please be aware of the above and lock away your valuables and move them out of sight. Police will be increasing patrols in the areas and paying extra attention to allotments.
Residents in the Adur and Worthing areas have been subject to a number of recent phone scams. Residents have been receiving calls from a person who clamed to be a police officer from London (the Met). The resident is then told that police have found details of the resident during a police investigation and ask the resident to confirm their personal details and part with bank details. Some residents have even been asked to make an over the phone payment to police. Be aware that this is a scam and police would never ask for money from a victim and would not ask for details such as this over the phone. We recommend that should you receive a call from somebody claming to be a police officer that you take the persons details including the officers warrant number and then call the force they clam to be calling from by dialling 101. Details of your local cafficers, current priorities and dates of local meetings are available on-line at www.sussex.police.uk (enter your postcode) or by telephone by calling 101.

id you know that Brighton and Hove has got the largest private rented sector in the country? The city’s landlords were recently surveyed and asked what percentage of tenants they thought were in receipt of some form of housing benefit. They on average
thought it was about 10%. You may be surprised to know that the reality is that a staggering 43% of tenants in the private rented sector within Brighton and Hove are in receipt of some form of housing benefit. The council is keen to lease properties

from landlords for between 2-7 years so if you have a property to let, this may be for you. Not only will you be helping a local family in need, but there are many benefits to the scheme for landlords too. The council will fully manage the property and tenants with no fees or commissions, there is a small repairs service run by a team of caretakers and the council will even throw in a free professional photographic inventory. The council absorbs the usual landlord risks by guaranteeing rents even through void periods. In the event of an eviction being needed, the council will completely handle it with no cost to the landlord. Martin McCurdy, the Acquisitions and Accreditation Manager says “The scheme has now been running for 8 years and is currently leasing over 800 properties. Due to this phenomenal success, the council has branched out and will now lease properties spanning all the way from Worthing to Seaford.” The council is also keen to acquire more disabled access properties so if you have a property you think may meet this criteria you may be able to receive enhanced rents for it. You can contact the Acquisitions and Accreditation team on 01273 292213 or 293830 for more information.

Losing Louis The Southwick Players are proud to present Losing Louis, a touching comedy by Simon Mendes da Costa about family, love and funeral arrangements.
E
vents from the past and present are ingeniously interwoven in a middle-class bedroom. In the late 1950’s we see Louis (Ben Cassan), an adulterous solicitor, enjoying sex with Bella
(Amy Chandler), a female pupil; what he doesn’t know until too late is that his son, Tony, is hiding under the bed! In the present we see the family gathering for Louis’s funeral. Tony (Julian McDowell) is now

Director Ron Common said “I saw this play back in 2005 and thought it was just wonderful. It stared Brian Protheroe, Lynda Bellingham and Alison Steadman and is littered with lines that had me in hysterics. I didn’t know what to expect when I bought the tickets but I was so glad I took the chance. I knew before I left the theatre that I wanted to direct this one day and I’m so pleased The Southwick Players have given me the opportunity.” “A well written comedy, the serious undertones (including the conflicts between Jewish and Christian faiths) in no way detracting from the humour. A seriously funny and exceptionally entertaining evening.” Shelia Connor – British Theatre Guide This adult comedy is performed at the Barn Theatre, Southwick from Wednesday 10th – Saturday 13th April 2013, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets £10.00/£11.00, available from the Box Office 01273 597094, or on-line at www.southwickplayers. org.uk (no booking fee). Contains adult material – not suitable for children. 27
