SEAFRONT CAFÉ / RESTAURANT DEVELOPMENT
Last month the Council awarded preferred developer status to Brian Wilson, Director of Wilbo’s restaurants. His initial sketch proposals are to be the subject of public consultation prior to a planning application being submitted later in the year. Whilst, the development opportunity is for the provision of a new cafe/restaurant facility replacing the existing toilets on the site the developer has suggested some further leisure uses for Beach Green itself and he is keen to see whether there would be any public support for such facilities that would increase the attractiveness of the cafe/restaurant.
COMEDY OF MENACE From the pen of Harold Pinter, one of our finest playwrights, Wick Theatre Company presents his Comedy of Menace. This is a beautifully crafted and explosive play which crackles with tension, some of it obvious and dramatic, much of it under the surface. There is fear, intrigue and the darkest of dark humour. Set in a run-down seaside boarding house, deckchair attendant Stanley Webber lives quietly with his wife Meg, the landlady. One day, two sinister gentlemen arrive and take a room. That night a seemingly innocent birthday party in Stanley’s honour heads off the rails and into uncharted, nightmarish territory. Dates are Wednesday March 30 to Saturday April 2, at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £11.00 from the Box Office on 01273 597094, or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk.
SHOREHAM ALLSTARS RETURN TO WILD LIFE
The young musicians of the Shoreham Allstars have been invited for a second year to play at this year’s Wild Life festival at Brighton City Airport in June. The collective of young musicians performed at the first Festival in 2015 and created such a fantastic impression with the organizers that they were among the first acts confirmed for 2016. They will be joined on the lineup by some of the top bands and acts in the UK includ-ing James Bay, Rudimental and Disclosure. Featuring musicians of all abilities, with an average age of 13, the Allstars will be performing on their own mobile stage throughout the weekend, giving 25 bands made up of 70 young musicians the opportunity to perform at a national festival in their town. David O’Connell, MD of Original Allstars Music, comments: “We are proud to be invited back as it is such a fantastic endorsement of all the bands that performed last year and of what the Allstars is all about — giving local children the opportunity to develop and perform. Over the coming weeks our musicians will be working hard at courses and band work-shops to create a special set list that will WOW the crowds again.”
ARTS CENTRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE OPENS
Y
OUNG PEOPLE AGED 7 to 18 in Lancing, Adur and Worthing have the opportunity to learn to play and perform music at the newly reopened Penhill Arts Centre. Original Allstars Music, the team behind the hugely successful Shoreham Allstars, have been working with WSCC over the last few years to help bring this refurbishment about and has secured a contract to make Penhill Arts Centre into a unique space for young people to develop their confidence, creativity and skills in the arts. The Allstars activities at the Centre, which are open to all regardless of ability or back‐ground, include: music instrument tuition (as a band and 1-2-1 basis); band workshops; and small live gigs and events.
Refurbished Arts Centre
The Penhill Arts Centre has been empty since 2013 but, following a refurbishment by West Sussex County Council, it now has music lesson & rehearsal rooms, a large stage, lighting rig and space for an audience of up to 100. 4
David O’Connell, MD of Original Allstars Music, comments: “We are delighted to have a new home in Lancing. The Shoreham Allstars has become successful on many levels — from performing at events community & national events, including the Wild Life Festival, to bringing young people together to work creatively as a community — and so we are delighted to be able to build on this success and bring the same opportunities to the young people of Lancing.” To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
How will the stockmarket volatility affect your pension?
T
HE LAST FEW weeks have seen much volatility in the stockmarket. Investors have been reeling from one bad news story to the next. First the state of the Chinese economy, then the oil prices, then commodities and most recently the European banks. Many investors have decided it is time to sell their shares causing the downturn and volatility. Some are saying this is an over-reaction and are buying into the market, share prices have reduced and by choosing the right investments there are many opportunities to be had. There is much speculation that the current volatility is due to market sentiment rather than the actual performance of the underlying companies themselves. So, how does this affect you? If you have investments which involve stocks and shares you will almost certainly have seen the value drop in the last few weeks. If you are invested long term this may not be so much of an issue as you have time to ride through the volatility. You only crystallise a loss when you sell your shares or investment. Here is where the problem lies. People who are due to retire may have a time where they wish to sell, and this may be the wrong time to do so. So what should they do?
free cash if this is not essential. This will allow more of your pension fund to recover and should increase the tax free cash you can take at a later date. Flexible pensions definitely help in these market conditions, a specific plan can be made to suit your overall needs. If you are about to retire and would like to discuss the best options for you, please feel free to call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
People who are due to retire may have a time where they wish to sell, and this may be the wrong time to do so. So what should they do? If your plan is to purchase an annuity and your pension fund has dropped, it may be better to try and hold off. The amount you receive will depend on various factors, but if your pension fund has reduced the annuity it can purchase will be lower. The decision about when to buy is crucial as it could affect your income for the rest of your life. If you are planning to use income drawdown to fund your retirement this is a different matter and the downturn may not affect your timing as much. The fund will continue to be invested and your income will be paid directly from the fund itself. If invested long term it will therefore benefit from future market upturns. You may want to delay taking too much tax 6

Shoreham’s Film Industry
T
HE FILM INDUSTRY on Shoreham Beach began in 1914 when Francis Lyndhurst (grandfather of actor Nicholas Lyndhurst) who was a scenic artist and film producer, formed the Sunny South Film Company with comedians Will Evans, George Graves and Arthur Conquest. In their first year they made four films ‘Building A Chicken House’, ‘The Jockey’, ‘Harnessing A Horse’ and ‘The Showman’s Dream’. ‘The Showman’s Dream’ was the most ambitious of the productions. Will Evans played a circus owner with Arthur Conquest playing a tiger, that in it’s owner’s dream escapes to cause havoc. The ‘tiger’ is filmed running into one of the thatched cottages near the junction of Connaught Avenue and the Upper Shoreham Road, and jumping into bed with an old lady. As the actor playing the old lady pretended to take fright and run off towards the Red Lion pub, a man who had been drinking there saw the tiger coming towards him and fled up the Steyning Road. Conquest’s tiger mask had slipped so he did not immediately realise he was chasing the wrong person, but the scene worked so well it was kept in the completed film. The film also featured a scene where the circus backcloth caught fire, which was filmed at the Old Fort on Shoreham beach. The Old Fort was a good location due to the natural light it offered and other films were shot there in 1914, but rain and high winds sometimes caused damage to sets and scenery. In 1915, Francis Lyndhurst overcame this problem when he set up The Sealight Film Company and had a glasshouse studio built near The Church Of The Good Shepherd. Unfortunately the company had financial problems and only lasted until 1916. The Progress Film Company took over the site in 1919 and Joan Morgan in the following years up to 1922, made a total of seventeen films there. Sidney Morgan, who also gave Shoreham its first film star, his daughter Joan Morgan, directed fifteen of these. Joan Morgan was only in her mid
8
teens when she began staring in her father’s films at Shoreham, though she had previously been a child actress. She can be seen in ‘A Lowland Cinderella’ (made in 1921) which was shot around Steyning, and is still sometimes shown locally today. She also took the lead in a silent version of ‘Dickens’‘Little Dorrit’, and starred in ‘The Children Of Gideon’, ‘Sweet and Twenty’, ‘Two Little Wooden Shoes’, ‘Lady Noggs’‘The Scarlet Wooing’, ‘The Lilac Sunbonnet’ and ‘Fires Of Innocence’. Among other actresses to appear in films made at Shoreham was Sybil Thorndike. The glass studio itself was only 75 feet by 45 feet, but separate wooden dressing rooms were constructed outside and other buildings which grew up around the studio included offices for staff, a carpenters’ shop for set-making and a small preview theatre for watching the rushes. Another film made at Shoreham, racing drama ‘Rogues Of The Turf’, made in 1922, involved a scene where a horse is being stolen by steam barge. This was filmed in the sea off Shoreham, and unfortunately in rough weather the towrope holding the barge broke. The horse very wisely abandoned the barge as its deck became swamped in water and swam ashore, only to bolt through Shoreham in fright. Luckily it was unharmed by the experience. In 1922 a fire destroyed part of the studio complex and several surrounding bungalows. The main glass studio survived relatively intact and although it spelt the end for The Progress Film Company, other companies continued to use the glass studio for a little longer. Walter West Productions made a horseracing film there, and Florence Turner, the American actress known as the Vitagraph Girl, starred in a film made there called ‘Hornet’s Nest’ in 1923. Soon after this, Florence Turner the glasshouse ceased to be used as a film studio, and was converted into an industrial building. The film industry moved elsewhere in the UK and of course became centred around Hollywood in the USA. The glasshouse studio and other buildings from Shoreham’s own film industry no longer exist today. Judy Upton

Spring into action
W
E HAVE HAD a real up and down winter this year so far. It’s either been a case of one storm after another or real sunny but cold crisp days, with some very cold nights and frosts in the mornings. On the plus side it is definitely noticeable that the evenings are starting to stretch out and the mornings are light before 7am now. As good as it is for us, it’s even better for the garden, with the increased light levels bringing much more activity in the garden. As we get more and more sunny days, then there are more chances to get out into the garden and see the mass of growth with the spring bulbs really going well. Mind you we have had
10
daffodils in our garden since the first week of January. There is plenty to do, but keep a good eye on the weather forecasts. Heavy frosts and cold winds are a feature of March, so don’t be lured into a false sense of security. Most gardens suffer from a lack of colour in the lull between winter and spring, so make the most of what colour you do have. Dead head any winter flowering Pansies and bedding plants to extend their flowering season a little longer. It’s also a good time to save a little money and make your plants go further. Herbaceous plants such as Irises, Hostas and day lilies can be divided, and replanted, making more plants from single overgrown clumps. This is easily done with a spade, and you don’t need to be too surgical with the cut! It’s also a good time to transplant shrubs that are still dormant, if you think they will be better suited to another site in the garden. Give them plenty of compost when you re-plant them, but don’t go over the top on watering them. I prefer to be a bit mean after the first week or two and make them start sending out roots for water. It will make for a much healthier plant. There’s still time to get into the beds and get plants such as Hydrangeas, dogwoods, Lavatera and Buddleja pruned back ready for the summer. While you’re in the beds dig over any areas where you plan to plant your annuals and get some good compost or well rotted manure dug in ready for them. If you notice any plants have become loose due to the really strong winds we have had or the frost, then re-heel them back. If necessary a support stake can be used to assist them re-root, but don’t leave it in too long as they can become reliant on them. In the vegetable garden, the activity continues to increase. Shallots can be planted outside. Rhubarb should be beginning to show itself now. If you love the stuff, then forcing it, by placing an old bucket over it to make the shoots grow thinner and more tender is a good method of getting some early crops. This shouldn’t be done every year though as it does take a lit of energy from the plant. You can now look at sowing certain varieties of carrots and parsnips in the ground, covered by a cloche. In the green house the chili peppers, aubergines, tomatoes, leeks, cabbages and cauliflowers can all be got underway. Finally now is an excellent time of year to get the ball rolling on any big plans for the garden underway. There is always an explosion of activity at Easter as people seem to come out of hibernation then, which makes booking landscapers and gardeners time harder so make sure you beat that rush! WHY IS GOOD POSTURE SO IMPORTANT? Local physiotherapist, Louis Jones, explains how to sit right
I
N THE LAST 2-3 years, I have seen more and more people who are suffering with neck and back pain. More surprising is that most of my clients who have a neck or back injury, or symptoms associated with it, for example shoulder and arm pain, pins and needles and numbness, sit all day looking at a computer screen. How can sitting cause so much of a problem? We associate problems with our necks and backs, with manual jobs, where we have to constantly bend, twist or lift heavy. Although this can certainly be a contributing factor, the reason sitting has become a major cause for concern, is well…..our posture isn’t very good.
What is posture?
Your posture is the position you hold when you lie, sit or stand, against gravity, which can put a strain on the body, so your muscles must be strong enough to overcome your body’s natural resistance in order to support and protect you. Poor posture can lead to stress and overuse injuries, which can be very debilitating and not only be painful, but can also affect our social and sporting lives. Posture is learned, and we
1. Your head should be balanced through your spine, and not in front of your body, as this will cause your neck muscles to work in order to support your head. 2. The top of your screen should be approximately eye level. 3. Your screen should be arms length from you. 4. Your chair should be almost upright, and you should sit back in your chair, so you can relax. There should be lumbar support to allow you to maintain correct spinal posture (s-shaped curve), which will help bring your shoulders and neck into correct alignment. 5. Your forearms should be parallel to and resting on your desk. Therefore chair armrests should be lowered, allowing you to sit closer to your desk. 6. Your chair should be at a height so that your hips are very slightly higher than your knees, to assist with your posture. 7. There should be a small space between your chair and backs of legs. 8. Your feet should be able to rest flat on the floor, otherwise a footstool or rest may be required.
can change our habits, in order to improve our posture. Often, our workstations are not set up effectively to optimize a good posture or position.
How can we improve our posture? Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

Firstly we can adapt our work stations, i.e. our desks, computer screen, keyboard and where our stationary is, in order to contribute to better posture. Below is a checklist of important changes you can make to your desk set up, which can help you reduce your risks of developing neck and back pain, or reducing your pain, if you already have it. Secondly, there are specific products you can buy if you use a laptop and cannot easily adapt the height of your computer screen, such as a Laptop Set, see www.posturite .co.uk for details. Lumbar rolls, are useful accessories and less expensive alternatives to getting a new office chair, which acts like a cushion to help support your lower back and encourage you to sit in a better alignment. Other ways you can improve your posture are to practice Pilates, which teaches you good posture awareness through strengthening exercises to improve core strength. You can buy books or DVD’s that teach you basics, see a local Pilates teacher on a one to one or group setting, and there are a number of good resources online, for example videos on YouTube. Antique valuations
A
SPECIAL ANTIQUES and collectables valuation event will be taking place soon in your area. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Friday 1st April, 10am to 2pm, at The Ropetackle Arts Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG. There will be experts providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins (including British & World, sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/ books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets & de-activated weapons. No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and the valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we later
sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag believed to have been carried by the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Sold for £2800 as a speculative item, the feeling was strong overall that the story behind the flag is true. It was nice to handle a topical item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very well also!)
Top Tips
The hottest markets for collectables at the moment are those of India, China and Asia in general, so if you have some old coins, stamps, postal covers or banknotes from those places you could be in luck! Be on the lookout for football programmes dated before 1960. Those from the 1940s and earlier are the most valuable. Cigarette Cards from small World War One era manufacturers can be good, particularly those of Taddy. The rarest set of all is Taddy Clowns, which has been known to sell for as much as £15,000. Condition is everything so try to keep anything you have in a safe, dry environment (not the garden shed or garage!). If you have any questions feel free to contact Lockdales’ Martlesham offices: 01473 627110, sales@lockdales.com. We will be holding some prior events in Gosport on 30th March, and Horsham 31st March also. For further information see our website www.lockdales.com 18
