Inside this issue

Hello and Welcome to the March Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Well, here we are at the beginning of spring! We live in a very aesthetic area with the Southdowns on our doorstep and the fresh salty air of the sea. We have in this month's issue Judy Upton's latest article about designer Hubert Scott-Paine who was born in Shoreham-by-Sea. Fascinating insight into this British aircraft designer! Mark Oakley has his latest tips on what to do as we leap into spring with all its glorious colour. If you want to learn music why not check out the newest way of doing so with Simply Music! With all the local news for the area and many articles from local contributors we have a lovely magazine for you this month. We hope you enjoy it and keep sending in your articles and events. We will make every effort to get you into the magazine. We have added an index again to the magazine and hope that this will be useful! Happy Mother’s Day to all mums and have a fabulous day. SWISS GARDENS SCHOOL SECURE £200,000 FUNDING Funds set aside for education from the Ropetackle North development in Shoreham-by-Sea have been confirmed to be heading the way of Swiss Gardens School. The school sits within the catchment area of Hyde Housing's development, who have set aside £247,960 to contribute to education in the local community — as part of the section 106 legal agreement which is anticipated to be signed and completed very shortly. This issue was brought to the attention of Adur District Council by the school and parents, at a recent meeting Leader of the Council, Cllr Neil Parkin. The Council then acted swiftly upon these ideas to push for an agreement to ring-fence the funding for Swiss Gardens School.

After discussions took place with West Sussex County Council, it was finally agreed that the funding would be used to secure improvements for school. Leader of Adur District Council, Cllr Neil Parkin, welcomed the news: “I am delighted that the County Council has listened to the Headteacher and Parents at Swiss Gardens School and agreed to ring-fence funds towards improvements to the school. I'm also pleased that thanks to Adur District Council's intervention and carrying forward these views, the funding can now benefit both the school and Ropetackle North development for years to come. This will deliver the positive ambitions of the developer and local community.”

SHOREHAM SOUTHWICK BARN BOX OFFICE APPEAL FARMERS' busy Box Office at the Barn Theatre in Southwick will soon be MARKET IS PICK The losing two of its stalwarts to well-earned retirement as well as their assistant, who covers for them when required, for family reasons. OF THE CROP! Therefore, volunteers are wanted urgently to help run this vital service. Shoreham has cause to celebrate as its iconic Farmers' Market has been officially named as 'Sussex Farmers Market of the Year 2017'. The accolade was announced at last night's Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2017, where the hosts included patron and former Olympic gold medalist Sally Gunnell OBE DL, as the 11th annual awards ceremony was held at the Amex Stadium. Shoreham Farmers market is held in East Street on the second Saturday of every month, and is rapidly growing into one of the largest Farmers Markets in Sussex. With over 50 different stalls, you can expect to sample an extensive range of some the best local produce available including fresh fruit, vegetables, baked goods, meat, fish and cheese. You'll also find local breweries and wine producers, chocolatiers and florists at this busy and bustling market. Located in the centre of Shoreham and easily accessible via public transport, the Market has become popular with both visitors and residents. Cllr Brian Boggis, Executive Member for Regeneration at Adur District Council, commented: “This is a fantastic achievement for the market, and one which the people of Shoreham can be very proud of. We've seen the Farmers Market go from strength to strength in recent times, with an abundance of stalls showcasing the very best local produce that Sussex has to offer. The markets are certainly occasions which show off Shoreham's character and charm. “I am also very pleased that Wendy Francis, from the Council's Place & Investment team, was able to attend and collect this award as she has been instrumental in the market's recent success.” 4

At least three are needed, but if there are more people the less frequently team members will have to work. Individuals will work on a rota basis and ideally would like a one-evening-a-week commitment for the times when staff is required. Staff must be in place two weeks before, and during the run of any production. At other times phone calls and online bookings are handled by one of the team at home. Holiday arrangements can be covered. The fully computerised system is tried and tested. There will be full training and no-one will ever be left to cope alone until they, and their instructor, are sure they are ready. You need to be computer literate, good at talking to people — using tact and consideration when required, able to handle money, able to give information clearly and concisely, and able to keep calm in difficult circumstances. So, how about giving it a go? Help us in any way you can to keep this all-important Box Office running. Contact the Southwick Community Centre Office, 01273 592819, email enquiries@southwickcommunitycentre.org.uk or pop in: 24 Southwick Street, Southwick. Theo ffice is open from Mon-Fri, 9am to 3pm.

AMY'S VIEW David Hare’s award-winning play Amy’s View will be Wick Theatre Company’s next production at Barn Theatre in Southwick, from Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 March, curtain up at 7.45pm. Amy’s view of life is that “love conquers all” — she feels we should all just try to get along. But is that possible when her mother and her boyfriend have such opposing views. Dominic, Amy’s boyfriend, thinks that theatre is dead, and supports new media, aspiring to become a film maker, while her mother Esme, a West End actress, defends the importance of the theatre. She does not understand how Amy can wish to be with a man like him. Nevertheless the couple marry and have a family. The action of this absorbing play is spread over a period of 16 years, from Esme’s first meeting with Dominic to their last. This is ultimately a story about how we express love and how much we will sacrifice to be loved. It opened at the National Theatre in 1997 and then transferred to the West End and on Broadway, winning several awards. Tickets cost £11.00 from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Pension income: what is best for you?

I

F YOU ARE reaching retirement age you may have started looking at your pensions. This often means filtering through a pile of paperwork and trying to understand what it all means. In the modern world many of us change employment more often, so you may have accumulated several plans from your previous employers. These plans may have different rules as to the benefits which can be taken. They would have been taken at various times meaning that different pension legislation could apply to each plan. Some give benefits that you should try and keep and others not. It can become confusing when you are trying to piece the information together and see how best to take your retirement income. The new flexible pension legislation introduced in the 2014 budget makes the process even more complicated. There are many options available depending on whether you need cash, for example to pay off a mortgage, or if your priority is income. Although much criticised in the press over the past few years, sometimes purchasing an annuity is the best option, especially if any of your plans offer a guaranteed higher annuity rate. These can give you a guaranteed income for the rest of your life, something which some people find very attractive. There can be drawbacks to this though, general annuity rates are historically low, also once the plan is set up it can’t be amended so it doesn’t account for a change of circumstances. Death benefits can be restrictive, so if someone dies earlier than they imagined an annuity could ultimately prove bad value for money. Some people prefer a more flexible way of taking their benefits. This may mean keeping the fund invested and taking tax free cash and income from the plan only when needed. If arranged this way death benefits are greatly improved. If a person dies before the age of 75 they can leave a tax free lump sum to their spouse or other beneficiaries. Also pension funds are not chargeable to Inheritance Tax and they grow tax free, so they are a good place to leave your money until you actually need it. If you do need your money straightaway, you could withdraw the whole of the fund. Beware though, only 25% of your fund will be paid tax free, the rest will be taxed as income. Perhaps it may be better to withdraw the funds over several tax years to pay less tax.

Everybody’s situation is so different, it is essential to take advice when you retire. This will make sure you get the most of your hard earned pension fund and make it work for you. For independent advice on any of the above and a free initial consultation, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer independent advice and would be happy to assist.

Hubert Scott-Paine

D

ESIGNER HUBERT SCOTT-PAINE was a British aircraft and boat designer, record-breaking powerboat racer, entrepreneur and inventor. Born in Shorehamby-Sea, on 11th March 1891, to Henry Paine and his wife Rosannah, and educated at Shoreham Grammar School, Hubert Scott-Paine had an early enthusiasm for aviation. In 1909, he took his first flight in a plane. Later he was to become was one of the early pioneers of aircraft design and construction. Later he specialised in the field of flying boats and high-speed marine craft design, the work for which he was most noted. Scott-Paine began the design of his first land-based aircraft in 1910. In his hometown of Shoreham, he met Noel Pemberton Billing in 1911. By 1913 he had moved to Southampton where Pemberton Billing had his marine aircraft factory. Here he met his first wife Alice Brenda Hockey and lived in the Bitterne area. He worked at Pemberton Billing’s factory, taking overall control of the company the following year. He renamed it Supermarine Aviation Works. There he constructed the first circular flying boat hull, and his patents for many other developments in flying boat design soon followed. He was one of the first to build a twin-engined land machine in this country and to build the first all-cabin aircraft. After the 1914-1918 war, Scott-Paine opened the first international flying boat service which operated between The Havre and Southampton. In 1916, Hubert Scott-Paine hired a young man called R.J Mitchell as his personal assistant and soon promoted him to the role of chief engineer and designer at the factory. Reginald Mitchell went on to achieve fame for designing the Spitfire aeroplane. In 1919, Scott-Paine was instrumental in the development of passenger-carrying flying boats and in the 1920s his Supermarine company expanded with a glut of foreign and domestic orders. That year his interest in speed meant Supermarine entering and winning the Schneider Trophy

— at the famous air races in Italy. Scott-Paine’s firm built the triumphant British entry, named the ‘British Challenger’. In 1923 however Scott-Paine sold his interest in Supermarine to Colonel James Bird for £192000 He then became a director of Imperial Airways, (whom he stayed with until 1940) and formed the British Powerboat Company in 1927. Amongst the famous craft he designed, built and raced were the "Panther" I and II, and the "Miss Britain" class of power boats. Racing high-speed powerboats became a passion and he was the first person to achieve speeds in excess of 100mph on salt water in a single-engine boat. ‘Miss Britain III’ was an extremely dangerous craft to pilot due to its light weight; its single screw and the position of the cockpit forward of the engine. Scott-Paine's cockpit was doubly dangerous because the pilot had to be almost shoehorned into it. In the event of the boat turning over at high speed, his chances of getting out were close to zero. Scott-Paine however thrived on both the velocity and the danger. On September 17th, 1937, he put ‘Miss Britain III’ across the measured mile at Venice, Italy, at 110.10 miles an hour. (Two weeks before that, Sir Malcolm Campbell rocketed his Bluebird across the measured mile on Lake Maggiore, Italy, at 129.5 miles per hour.) Before the outbreak of World War Two, Scott-Paine worked hard to get the Admiralty to accept his new boat designs. By 1930 he was developing new types of fast launches for the air ministry. Working with him was T.E. Shaw, otherwise known as Lawrence of Arabia. As Aircraftsman Shaw he had been seconded to the British Powerboat Company after working on the 1929 Schneider Trophy race. Just before the war, Hubert Scott-Paine established the Marine Design and Engineering Development Corporation in America and the Canadian Power Boat Company, Ltd., where these classes of craft were manufactured. Back in Britain, during the war his Hythe boatyard produced motor torpedo boats, gunboats air sea rescue boats for the RAF. In 1945 the British Power Boat Company closed. Scott-Paine stayed in the US where he married his second wife. He became an American citizen and died there on the 14th April 1954, in Greenwich, Connecticut, aged sixty-three. Judy Upton

Marching ahead with your garden I N MARCH IT is very noticeable that the evenings are lengthening little by little and the clocks will soon be changing giving us even more time to enjoy the garden, so it would seem spring is on its way. Mind you it has been a very strange start to the year, with a lot of gloom, prolonged low temperatures, followed by above average temperatures, rain and frost. I suppose it could have been winter. Let’s

hope for better weather in spring! As we are already in March, and the year is starting to gather pace, it’s time to get your skates on with some jobs. If you are looking to plant seeds, then in some cases, get a move on! Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers etc., will all do well with a good early start. Try to look after them as well as possible from start to finish. Use clean trays, pots or containers, new compost and keep them water and warm. Follow the instructions on the packet and don’t be afraid to be ruthless and thin them out saving only the best and strongest as they start to emerge. You can also start to plant salad greens if you have a greenhouse or warm window cill. It helps cheer up the place to see anything growing, especially if you get quick results If you’ve got space in the greenhouse you could try something a little different by planting up hanging baskets, or any other container with strawberry plants. I’ve even seen old wellies with holes cut in the sides used as strawberry containers! If you choose an early variety they should give you a nice early crop in time for the first week of Wimbledon. Hopefully you are starting to notice a good carpet of spring flowers showing themselves, although I think they have been a little later in appearing this year. They use a lot of energy to get up through the ground and put on the display, so reward them with a liquid feed of fertiliser to help them get more energy back into the bulb for next year, and dot cut the greenery down once the flowers die off. They take the nutrients back from the greenery into the bulb. Another familiar sound at this time of year is the lawnmower running up and down the lawn. Remember to start off with a high setting on the lawn and make sure you have a sharp blade on the mower. If the ground is still too wet for the first mow, get the rest of the lawn looking good and sort out the edges, to make the mowing easier and to keep the lawn looking really sharp. This is one of the best times of year, having been putting up with miserable weather, it’s great to get back outside and get jobs done, or just see what is starting to emerge again, so enjoy it, even if it means putting a coat on! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

BREAKTHROUGHS IN CREATIVITY FOR HUMANITY

Simply Music is the largest playing-based music education institution in the world. The revolutionary Simply Music Piano program offers a breakthrough in music education, and has students playing great-sounding contemporary, classical, gospel, blues and accompaniment pieces – immediately – from their very first lessons. Simply Music focuses on the sheer pleasure of playing. The ‘hands-on’ approach, and immediate results, actively dispels the notion that learning to play means enduring years of lessons, boring practice sessions and relentless hours of drills.

How is Simply Music different? • • • •

The quantity of music you learn The quality of music you immediately learn to play The speed of your progress The ease with which you experience the process

The Simply Music Method is based on the premise that everyone, without exception, is naturally musical. Traditional methods insist that beginners learn to read music as the means of learning to play. This removes the natural connection between student and instrument and commonly, it removes all the fun, too. In fact, expecting students to read music before they’ve learned to play is like expecting children to read and spell before they’ve learned to talk. In stark contrast, Simply Music temporarily delays reading and introduces a revolutionary, ‘playingbased’ approach – a body of unique concepts that unfold directly onto the keyboard, producing unprecedented results. With Simply Music, you experience the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from immediately playing a huge repertoire of great-sounding music.

“ My boys are 8 and 10. They’ve had just 12 lessons

with Simply Music and already know 12 songs. Not just ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’, but real music. The boys are already playing the blues. They think they’re hot stuff. ” — Rebecca Neis, Parent

“ This is a wonderful music program and the results

are astounding! Even if you don’t consider yourself musically inclined, this program is for you. I also think it could be a major breakthrough for children with a variety of cognitive delays and learning difficulties. I love Simply Music’s approach. ” — Dr. Anne Margaret Wright (Psy.D.) Educational Consultant

“ I have seen a lot of music programs over the

years. Some were fun. Some were clever. Some were thorough. Here’s one that has it all. In terms of presentation, effectiveness, philosophy—you name it—there’s nothing out there that compares at all. ” — Mary Pride, Publisher, Practical Homeschool Magazine

Avoid the Downs of Cycling Injuries This month, Louis Jones wants to focus on common cycling injuries and how we can avoid them. What are the most common cycling injuries? The most common injuries associated with cycling are lower back pain, neck pain and knee pain. This is without taking into account injuries that happen due to accidents on the road and off road. Lots of cyclists suffer with neck and back aches and sharp pain in their knees. These 3 areas account for nearly 80% of all injuries related to cycling. Why do these injuries occur? Most injuries associated with cycling occur due to poor set up of your bike, such as incorrect size bike frames, incorrect saddle height and position, and incorrect handle bar position.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

These are the 3 key areas of a bike that you must get right in order to cycle efficiently and to avoid straining your body. When purchasing a new bike, the size of the frame is the most important feature to get right. Most bike shops will offer a “Bike Fit” service to make sure you get the right frame, before parting with large sums of money. Still, you see lots of sellers on eBay, selling bikes that are “too large” or “too small” for them, having spent a small mortgage on the latest carbon frames, and not being able to ride due to injuries. It’s important to get the frame size right, and there are lots of good resources that offer comprehensive advice on the right frame size for you (check out www.ebicycles.com/bicycle-tools/frame-sizer). What else can we do to avoid injury? There are 3 areas of a bike that we can adapt to improve our posture, and increase our cycling efficiency. 1. Saddle height and position: If your saddle is too high, you’re going to increase your risk of getting lateral knee pain, such as Iliotibial band syndrome, which is a sharp pain felt on the outside of the knee, through repetition of pedalling. Get your saddle too low and you’re going to increase the risk of experiencing pain in your knee cap when pedalling against resistance. Having your saddle too far forwards or back can affect your reach on the handle bars, which can increase your chances of developing neck and back pain. 2. Handle bars height and position: Handle bar height will affect your back position and also the amount of tilt you have on your handle bars and gear and brake levers will affect your shoulder and elbow position, which can put strain n your muscles. 3. Pedals: The third key area is the pedals. Your foot position on your pedals is important because of the potential for your knees to twist inwards or outwards, can have an effect on knee injuries. I would recommend investing in a “Bike Fit” when buying a bike or if you’ve already noticed injuries or discomfort associated from cycling, then having a bike fit, can be beneficial in alleviating pain and unnecessary stresses on your body. If you would like more information on our Bike Fit service, or have any queries related to any cycling injuries, please feel free to contact me on 01273 467614 or email me at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

CELEBRATING SHAKESPEARE… LAST YEAR, THIS YEAR, FOR EVER! Following the great success and enjoyment of ‘Celebrating Shakespeare 2016’, Shoreham Wordfest, Shoreham’s annual cultural and literary festival, are holding their second Shakespeare Festival this year, Thursday 20th – Sunday 23rd April. The 23rd April being the date of the Great Bard’s birthday and his death, what better weekend to celebrate him, and his endless fascination, 401 years on? Events are in Shoreham at the West Street Loft and the Shoreham Centre, and in Southwick Library. The programme is again packed and diverse, and a theme threading through events this year is the enthralling world of Shakespeare’s villains. It begins on the 20th with a Shakespeare film night, probably the best-ever Richard III showing at the wonderful characterful West Street Loft . On Friday 21st afternoon there’s a vigorous discussion, ‘Richard III Villain or Victim?’, and in

the evening the lively talented Wick players are at West Street Loft to give us intriguing dramatic insights with ‘Scenes of Villainy from Shakespeare’. Students declaiming the Bard, and South Downs Folk Singers, will be strolling the streets of Shoreham on Saturday while at the Shoreham Centre

Please mention Inside Shoreham & Southwick when responding to adverts

there’s a guided workshop, ‘Dragonish Clouds and Green-eyed Monsters’, open to all, to explore ways of turning lines from the plays and sonnets into pictures; Saturday afternoon ‘Iago and the Question of Evil’, a fascinating talk with live readings, then Shakespeare Night, dancing and carousing ‘til late over rustic Elizabethan victuals to the vibrant Kate’s Kitchen Band. On Sunday morning you can have ‘Coffee With Shakespeare’s Queens’, the good the bad and the ugly; then in the afternoon delve into Sussex folklore and Shakespeare’s themes; and enjoy a joyous song workshop open to all comers learning some wonderful Elizabethan songs and rounds. We hope there’s something for everyone to enjoy, so come and join the Shoreham Wordfest Celebrating Shakespeare fun! Springing into action

S

O, HOW ARE those New Year fitness and wellness resolutions coming along? Are you on track? If so congratulations! But if you're not doing quite as well as you'd hoped, you’re not alone. Don't be too harsh on yourself, think of it as a temporary setback; maybe you need to STOP for a moment and reconsider your goals. Perhaps they need some adjustment. Sometimes we set out to make huge changes that, for whatever reason, we can't actually commit to fully and so we give up. So, now that March and spring are not that far away here are some suggestions to help you get back on track…

Let us help you find relief from: Back pain, Neck pain Shoulder pain, Knee pain Sports injuries Postural strains Stress-related pain And more… Our caring, qualified and experienced team offer Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports and Remedial Massage, Hypnotherapy, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, 1-1 Pilates sessions Book an appointment (£5 off with this ad) or pop in for a free consultation in our calm and welcoming space, right in the heart of beautiful Shoreham

• Did you set yourself too many goals? Consider which 1, or maximum 2, changes to your lifestyle are really a priority and then focus your energy and commitment on those. • Break those goals down into smaller, achievable targets – write out a plan of how you will make those targets and when. • Remember small changes lead to big changes – going to the gym once a week consistently is better than going 4 times a week for a month and then letting your membership lapse – when once a week is a regular, enjoyable occurrence look and see how you can add to that. Small, regular, changes will invariably lead you to your goal. • Garner support from friends, family, colleagues and remember to reward yourself for hitting your targets. If you do have a brief lapse, it’s important to make sure you don't beat yourself up about it! Get up, dust yourself off, get excited about all the good stuff to come and carry on where you left off. If it's all getting too much, perhaps get some help. Hypnotherapy can help you get back on track and achieve your goals whether losing weight, quitting smoking, conquering your fear of flying or finding the motivation to leave the job you hate or just get down the gym! If you are struggling with weight loss and management, our clinical hypnotherapist Ruth is currently offering a package at £198 for four personalised sessions and back-up recordings. This can help you not only achieve the weight and health you deserve but also maintain this new healthier, fitter you. This package, which incorporates the Virtual Gastric Band, aims to reconsider your relationship with food and release you from negative habits in order to get you back in the driving seat. Or perhaps you’re avoiding getting back to exercise or other activities/hobbies because of a lingering problem — back or knee pain, for instance — which you are worried about triggering or making worse. If so, an assessment, possibly treatment, and advice from an experienced osteopath or physiotherapist may just be what you need to help you plan the best way to get back to doing the things you love and enjoying life to the full. Our expert multidisciplinary team at SOC is dedicated to helping you feel and live better in every way. Happy springtime! If you would like to discuss any of the above, just give us a call on 01273 567654 or drop us a line by email at info@shorehamosteo.co.uk. NORTHBOURNE'S MEDICAL CENTRE'S MEMORY CAFÉ The recent innovations by the NHS England to encourage all General Practices to have a PPG (Patient Participation Group) has really taken off within Northbourne Medical Centre where it has recently proudly announced its new 'Memory Cafe' Leigh Pask, the clinical admin. Co-ordinator at Northbournejoined with Kate Friedlander, a dementia support worker to set up this initiative which reopens on Tuesday 28th February from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Each session is to be a drop-in café and so much more, with refreshments provided by the Patient Group. For those hoping to learn more about memory loss - Kate will be available, supported by Barbara Porter who is the elected Trust Governor for Western Sussex Hospitals, to lead discussion on a variety of topics and talk to individuals about their concerns. The forthcoming topics are: Tuesday 28th February – 2:00 to 4:00: “Coping with Memory Loss” Tuesday 28th March – 2:00 to 4:00: “Keeping Involved and Active” Tuesday 25th April - 2:00 to 4:00: “Questions about Dementia” This PPG group is very fortunate to have a large and active committee that meets once a month. The Chair stated ' the success of this group is totally due to the excellent relationship we have with all the staff and Doctors here at Northbourne and with the full support of the Practice Manager. We are all progressing and learning together'. But it is having this type of active voice that will ensure that medical practice and service will continue to improve.

Information events currently being planned for later this year are for – Advice on Antibiotics; Mental Health Issues in Teenagers and Fibromyalgia and pain management. The group also takes fund raising seriously, having just purchased a 24 hour blood pressure machine and is currently saving for a Doppler Scanner. Money is raised through books sales, organized by Mr and Mrs Rose, fund raising events and it has also extended into having a retired Solicitor David Heath serve on the committee. Mr Heath is offering Will writing and probate services with all donations raised going towards the work of the PPG.

'RUDE' SOUNDS IN SHOREHAM

A regular midweek music event in Shoreham has become renowned for top-quality musical treats. It's free, it's weekly, and it's full of surprises. Popular multi-instrumental acoustic trio The Rude Mechanicals have developed a huge repertoire of musical gems from the rich traditions of the British Isles, Europe and elsewhere. Often joined by musical pals for even more variety, they play a wide range of material in the informal setting of the Red Lion, Shoreham, every Wednesday from 8.30pm. The music played differs every week and might include early court music, foot-tapping folkdance tunes, gentle airs, jazzy rags, contemporary compositions and special arrangements.

A large armoury of instruments is usually to hand, including fiddle, guitar, mandolin, mandola, Swedish nyckleharpa, English concertina, piano accordion, banjo, piccolo, flutes and various whistles. And that's just by the main trio - guest musicians will sometimes expand the range of instruments even further. The Rude Mechanicals are Barry Ruffell, Mick Parker and Ray Chandler – three Adur-based players with decades of musicmaking experience. A particular hallmark of the trio is their development of special arrangements of traditional tunes – adding harmony parts and counter-melodies for extra musical interest. Most of the 21 tracks on their latest CD “Lady Pentweazle's Maggot” feature such arrangements, and they are constantly adding new ones to their repertoire. The Wednesday night performances at the Red Lion draw on this rich vein and include traditional tunes from England, Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia and America. Some of the material is harvested from 19th Century collections and earlier, right through to recently-written tunes. Although the selections are mostly instrumental, the Mechanicals are happy to wheel out a few songs if an audience asks for them. The evenings are relaxed and informal, and the playing is all acoustic — no amplification to make chatting impossible for diners and drinkers — but the room is small enough for people interested in the music to hear it in detail. More information about the Rude Mechanicals and their music is available on the website www.rudemex.co.uk
