Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to the April Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Firstly, I wish you all a Happy Easter! This time of year is really spectacular with beautiful sunshine, daffodils flowering and joie de vivre in the air. I hope you survive through April Fools Day without mishap and in April we have World Health Day on April 7th and St. Georges Day on April 23rd. As we leap into spring we can hopefully look forward to days full of warmer weather and that feeling of excitement over the coming months of pleasure in and around our gardens. We have the latest gardening tips from Mark.

However if you don’t enjoy digging up dirt and planting and want it landscaped so you just have to maintain it, there are number of gardeners in the directory who would love to help you create a space to relax and enjoy the warmer weather. n the night of the 24th March 1895, Mrs Robinson, a society palm reader, agreed to see Oscar Wildein her London flat. It was just one week before what is going to be billed as the trial of the century. In Extremis attempts to reveal and understand the strange turmoil of that night, as one of the most celebrated men of his age enlists the help of a complete stranger for advice about a potentially life-changing decision. Faced with the choice of fight or flight was Oscar’s fateful decision based on the advice he received that night? This wonderful play was first presented at The National Theatre to mark the centenary of Oscar Wilde’s death. Running time 50 minutes (approximately) followed by Q & A session with the actors. Fascinating Facts about… Cuckooflowers

n April look out for the pretty pale-pink blooms of cuckooflower, often known as ‘lady’s smock’. Found wherever there’s a damp grassy patch in a lane, field or beside a road, the flowers are thought to open as the first cuckoo sings. • Very common throughout the British Isles, the cuckooflower has a rosette of leaves at its base, an elegant, tall stem and small delicate pale-pink or lilac flowers • It blooms from April to June and flowering is said to coincide with the arrival of the first cuckoo – a sure sign that spring has arrived at last • Other common names include milkmaids or lady’s smock. The plant was said to be sacred to the fairies and unlucky to bring indoors • Is one of the main food plants for the orange-tip and green-veined white butterfly. Why not grow your own? W

ell with the clocks moved forward we have got the longer evenings and the long weekend of Easter is behind us, so it really is time to look forward to the coming warmer months of summer. I just hope this year we get one, as Spring has definitely been colder, although at least a little drier. This time of year really is the busy time, where you can literally miss an opportunity to plant or sow something, or let the weeds take control in a few weeks. It may sound daunting

but as I always say, keep the jobs small and frequent and it is easy to keep on top of the garden and it makes it so much more enjoyable. It’s very easy to get carried away in the garden and spend a fortune on plants, but there are always cheaper options and what better way than to produce your own. It’s a little bit more work, but I always think it’s so much more satisfying. A packet of seeds or bulbs can cost less than a single tray of bedding plants and produce so many more. If you do decide to sow flowers from seed, take care of them. Don’t let them dry out, and be ruthless with pricking them out as they grow. Put simply it means get rid of the smaller seedlings that are taking up light, food and room and give the others a chance to grow. It’s better to have a couple of good large healthy plants that put on a good show, rather than a lot of small weak plants that struggle. Also make sure you harden them off slowly to get them used to the outside temperature before you plant them out. Expose them to the outside conditions during the day a little at the time, and don’t leave out overnight until the risk of frost has passed. Another way of producing more plants is layering. Many shrubs, such as honeysuckle, and forsythia can produce plants by using this method. Simply pull some of the younger stems down and peg them down onto the ground. Cover with some decent compost and leave. After a while they will produce their own roots, and you can cut them off of the main plant and replant as a new shrub. You can also use this method with fruit such as strawberry’s when they send out runners. In general, keep on top of weeding, especially now as they will start to romp away in the warm weather, aided by the damp evenings. Also keep a look out for pests. There will be signs of greenfly and blackfly already so deal with them early to keep the infestation from getting too large and out of control It’s a great time of year and whilst there is a lot to do it’s a real satisfying feeling, knowing that you are getting things ready for a good show of colour or of vegetables in the coming months. Shoreham Weathercocks and Weathervanes W

eathervanes vary hugely in design and it sometimes seems like anything goes. The shape of the figure that turns to point between North, South, East and West might be a coat of arms, a horse and cart or a witch on a broomstick. Unusual designs to be found in Sussex include a coffee pot and a Bedouin riding a camel. Weathervanes started life as wind direction indicators rather than decorative objects however. The first metal one on record was in Ancient Greece around 100 BC. At the Tower of the Winds in Athens, the pinnacle was a statue of the sea god Triton holding a pointer, which rotated in the wind. The oldest weathervane in England is on a church at Etchingham in Sussex. It is made of copper and dates from 1363. Like all those crafted soon after, it bore a coat of arms, and had its roots in the cloth pennants on poles carried by armies in battle. These Heraldic weather vanes had to be licensed, and the shapes of the vanes was strictly regulated to indicate the rank of the person upon whose building it was displayed. By the late 17th century weather vanes, while still seen as useful indicators of wind direction for those crowing crops etc, were unregulated and could be created to the owner’s own specifications. Those with grand houses and castle saw them mostly as trendy embellishments. Farmers, fishermen and gamekeepers, in whose lives the weather played an important role, were now also free to fashion their own weathervanes, or have them crafted by the local blacksmith. A cattle farmer might have his weathervane designed in the image of a prize cow, a coach and horses was the vane of choice for carriers, and breweries often used a fox to top their roofs. The weathervane had gone from being a useful tool and a fashionable indicator of status, to an advertisement of a person’s livelihood or trade, and one that could usefully be viewed at a distance. In Shoreham, the church of St. Mary de Haura provides a fine example of the pennant or pennon type of weather vane. A long vane designed to resemble a fluttering pennant follows an ornate pointer. It is inscribed with the letters JC and JWM and bears the date 1866. The initials are those of the two churchwardens who were in occupancy at the time the vane was erected. At St. Botolphs church, along the river Adur north of Old

Shoreham, there is a large white-coloured weather vane in the shape of an arrow, residing on the original ancient roof of the church. St. Botolph’s is thought to be named after an abbot from East Anglia, who died in 680 A.D. In ‘The Story Of Shoreham’ Botolph is referred to as the boat-helper and in Scandinavia his name is linked to weather and crops, so the weathervane on the church roof is a very appropriate addition to this building. It is also one that must have been well used by both farmers and sailors over the centuries as the church is situated in farmland overlooking the river. A similar arrowshaped vane adorns the roof of its near neighbour Coombes Church, which is situated on what is now Church Farm, Coombes, and was built during the 11th century. Weathercocks have a slightly different history to weathervanes, as their purpose was originally to be religious symbols. Around 850 AD a papal enactment required cockerels to be placed upon church towers as an emblem to St. Peter. The cockerel alluded to the denial of Christ ‘thrice before the cock crew twice’ mentioned in The Bible. By 1000AD weathercocks had appeared on church spires and towers throughout the Christian world. The first weathercock recorded on a church in England was at Winchester in 643, and is illustrated in the Benedictional Book of around 984. The Bayeux Tapestry also includes the depiction of a weathercock. Here the bird-shaped weathervane is being taken to the roof of Westminster Abbey. In the 13th century an eminent theologian wrote: “The cock at the summit of the church is a type of preacher. For the cock, ever watchful even in the depth of night, giveth notice of how the hours pass, wakeneth the sleepers, predicteth the approach of day, but first exciteth himelf by striking his sides with his wings.” Shoreham has its own ecclesiastical weathercock on the roof of the tower of St. Nicholas church in Old Shoreham. This is a gilded weathercock, which it is believed is around 130 years old. In 1982 the weathercock needed to be repaired after its spindle ceased to move and the letters representing the four points of the compass had decayed. There are many other weathervanes and weathercocks to be seen around Shoreham, including some on private dwellings and it looks like being a tradition that continues to enjoy popularity for as long as humankind remains fascinated by the weather. A number of cars have been broken into recently across our district. In most cases this has resulted in the theft of objects that have been left on display and not properly secured such as satellite navigation equipment. The following steps will assist you in deterring this sort of crime. • Park your vehicle in a well lit area. • Place a sticker on your vehicle stating that no valuables are left in it over night. • Remove your valuables. • Remove your SatNav including its cradle. • Wipe away the cradles sticky marks from your windscreen. • Keep any personal belongings out of sight.

Birds and Chimneys – a problem combination

pring, when it arrives, means those little Jackdaw fiends are eyeing up your chimney to build their nest. They start by dropping twigs down the chimney – this is the foundation, or scaffolding as we like to call it. Look out for twigs in the grate since this is the first sign that your house chimney has been chosen for their new home. Once the twigs are installed, the birds build lovely solid nests and lay their eggs. By May chicks will have hatched – so in May and June it is against the law to remove a nest as it may contain young birds. The problem will be obvious when

you choose to light a fire as smoke will enter the room. Worse still if you have a gas fire as carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless. It can enter the room undetected unless you have taken appropriate action. Have a quick check of your chimney stack – is there any bird activity – do you have anything to prevent the birds from entering the chimney? Your sweep should be able to guide you on the type of cowl or bird guard that you need depending on what type of fire or woodburner you have. Are you Spring cleaning your home? Why not your chimney too? Your sweep will be able to alert you to any bird activity and take action now – next month it will be too late. Chimneys that have been used during the winter months may drop tar and soot if they haven’t been swept. Getting the chimney swept is a great addition to your spring cleaning regime and will leave your chimney ready for winter or the next cold spell.

Lesson 1 – On the web private information is not so private Explain to your kids that every time they update their Facebook status, upload a photo, or send a tweet, their private information has entered the public domain. Even if they delete the photo or remove the tweet, it is more than likely that a problem won't go away: A friend could have re-tweeted or passed on the information, a photo could have been copied onto another site, and that joke they thought might have gained a couple of new followers might rebound on them. The end result is the same — things tend to stick around for a long time in cyberspace. What your child may think is private between their friends becomes public.

n today's connected world, nine out of ten children have a mobile phone, and are able to communicate with others as never before. Facebook, instant messaging, E-mail, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, blogs and forums, with new platforms cropping up as others fall out of fashion. This can lead to problems for the concerned parent, wandering at which point they should intervene without provoking a tantrum. While this level of communication is for the most part positive, there may be negative consequences in the long run. Recent research showed that more than a third of under-13s use Facebook despite the site's age limit, and could be using the site without knowing the risks to their personal data. Mark Hall, managing director of Gotjuice.co.uk — the online reputation management consultancy — commented: "The playground has changed. Communication has never been so easy, and we can share our information over multiple platforms and reach thousands of people at the touch of a button. "It's all too easy to share that embarrassing party photo on Facebook, or write a shocking or perhaps an unintentional negative comment. However, is very hard to completely remove this content later. There are many free tools such as Google Alerts, Social Mention or even simple searches on Twitter which will both alert you and give you access to anything that is published about your child. When it comes to your child's online reputation, taking proactive steps should never be considered a bad idea. Educating your child early on about positive steps to take will put them ahead of the curve against many adults who still operate under the assumption that their reputation online isn't important. Most importantly, don't be devious about what you are doing. Let your child know you are watching their back online, but make it clear you have no interest in invading their privacy. The concerned parent should pay just as much attention to their children's online life as they do to their welfare in the real world.

Homeowners opt for a spot of DIY It seems the credit crunch has not only prevented many of us from moving house, but has also stopped us hiring professional tradespeople to tackle home improvement jobs. Builders, decorators and plumbers who thought they would get a bite of the home improvements pie have been left sorely disappointed as eager homeowners turn to DIY in a bid to save money.

Thousands of small building businesses and oneman-bands up had expected to cash in on the crisis as property owners opted to make home improvements rather than move house. As the cost of living escalates and the average householder feels the pinch any non-essential home improvement work will undoubtedly be put on the backburner. According to job-auction website e-genie, tradespeople, especially those in the north, are taking the brunt of the economic downturn. The job auction website deals with hundreds of requests daily from householders looking for skilled people to carry out building, repair or decoration work. However, it seems homeowners in the south-east have more money to spare for vital home improvements than northerners, according to e-genie, which has been monitoring activity on its website over the past three months. More than half of the requests for work are from the south of England while only 28 per cent have come from the north and Scotland. Stefan Troester from eGenie says: "We have witnessed the demand for plumbers, electricians, builders and other tradespeople has fallen sharply 26

in recent weeks in the north of Britain. However, the opposite is taking place in the south — particularly London. This does highlight a marked change as earlier in the year, when the credit crunch was first starting to bite, as demand was." In contrast to their cash strapped northern neighbours, Londoners make up a quarter of all requests for building work and home improvement. The capital made up 26 per cent of the total requests for tradespeople on the website last month. But it seems homeowners in Scotland and the northwest prefer a spot of DIY than paying out for a professional, as both areas accounted for less than nine per cent of auctions for workers.

Homeowners to be on their guard In this difficult climate, tradespeople need to be even more savvy and proactive when marketing their services and attracting new business. As the competition for business gets tougher, consumers need to be even more wary of cowboy tradespeople. Many see this as an opportunity to attract customers through low-cost services delivered without any professional expertise or training.
