County Council errs on side of safety in pothole battle More than 9,620 potholes have now been repaired by West Sussex County Council since the start of the year. Ten maintenance gangs, along with six pothole patrol teams, have been out continuously throughout 2014 to keep the roads safe for people to use. The high level of ground water underneath the road surface has caused problems – with some repairs failing because of it. The County Council always tries to make a permanent repair. However, sometimes wet weather dictates a temporary repair must be made. Temporary repairs are short term measures to make the road safe. These repairs are closely monitored and if they fail we return to fix the pothole permanently. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “We will always err on the side of safety, which is the reason why we make temporary repairs. “It is not a question of shoddy workmanship – it is a question of keeping our roads safe during what has proved to be an exceptionally wet time of year. If we did these repairs over the summer, we would not be having this problem.” Anyone can report a pothole online. Log on to www. westsussex.gov.uk and click the ‘Love West Sussex’ logo on the bottom left hand side of the homepage. You can report it by smartphone by downloading the free ‘Love West Sussex’ app either via the app stores or from lovewestsussex@westsussex. gov.uk. The ‘Love West Sussex’ App is only to be used for reporting potholes and defects. For any other problems regarding potholes, call 01243 642105. Helping children with autism experience the great outdoors
A
GUIDE SHOWING parents and teachers the positive effect the natural environment can have on children on the autistic spectrum has just been published. With information on 24 diverse locations across the whole of West Sussex, the booklet, called ‘Visiting the West Sussex Countryside’, has been made possible thanks to grants from several organisations, including short breaks funding from West Sussex County Council. “We know that getting out and about into the countryside can have considerable benefits for people’s health and wellbeing, and this is especially true for children and young people,” said Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life. “The guide is designed to make the experience of visiting somewhere new as easy as possible, with information on things like whether animals will be encountered and how far a child would need to walk.” Three West Sussex schools were involved in compiling the booklet - Manor Green Primary School in Crawley, St Anthony’s School in Chichester and Palatine Primary School in Worthing. Pupils and teachers visited the featured locations and providing feedback and comments. The guide has been written by David Blakesley and Tharada Blakesley and would also be useful for people who live and work with adults with autism. It’s available from West Sussex libraries and Children and Family Centres or by emailing the County Council’s Short Breaks Team short.break.team@ westussex.gov.uk.
Residents to help shape coastal defences
M
EMBERS OF BRIGHTON & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee have given the go ahead for a second round of consultation on a new coastal protection plan. The first round of consultation took place last summer. Climate change, rising sea levels and stormy weather all affect our coastline and add to the risk of flooding and erosion. In order to best prepare for the future Brighton & Hove City Council has joined forces with Adur & Worthing Councils, Shoreham Port Authority and the Brighton Marina Company to produce a plan for the next 100 years. The Brighton Marina to River Adur Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Strategy covers the areas from the lock gates at Shoreham to, and including, Brighton Marina. The strategy divides the stretch of
4
coastline into three areas and offers a shortlist of options for each. The list has been produced after officers explored a wide range of options, considering each one in terms of: Flood and erosions risk to people and property; Climate change and predicted sea level rise; Costs; Impact on the natural environment. For each area, one option is highlighted as the preferred course of action over the 100 year life of the strategy. Shoreham Port: the proposed option is to improve the defences in the lock gate area. The open coast between Brighton Marina & the River Adur: the strategy proposes raising seawalls at the western end and enlarging some groynes to create bigger beaches, to ensure the city is adequately protected from sea level rise and the worst effects of storms at sea. The regular movement of beach material from Shoreham Beach and from next to
Brighton Marina onto the Port’s beaches and normal maintenance work on the groynes and seawalls would continue. Brighton Marina: the report proposes increasing the height of the inner harbour wall. Consultation will run until 24th April 2014. There will be touring, unmanned exhibitions through the three month period. Venue for the exhibition are: Adur Civic Centre from 31st March to 7th April 2014. Cllr Pete West, chair of Brighton & City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee said: “The recent heavy rainfall, storms and widespread flooding have highlighted the need for us to look at how we can best protect our coastline. I would urge residents, particularly those living near the sea, to take part in the consultation and help us to develop a strategy which will ensure our coastline is protected and preserved for future generations.” To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Simple approachable help with your finances
I
N THE MODERN world we all encounter financial products such as mortgages, pensions, life policies and investments. Most of us are not taught at school about such things and the only way to learn is through experience. There are TV programmes which dip into it, and of course the internet. But these give us fragmented information which is often confusing. Then, we have time pressure. Many of us have busy lives with little spare time. Do we want to spend our weekends sorting through paperwork? Probably not! No wonder we don’t get round to sorting things out.
What to do
If you would like a simple, independent review of your finances, please give me a call. I am offering a free initial consultation to Inside Shoreham readers. Please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be happy to help.
Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount invested. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
What can Talk Money do to help?
As an independent adviser (IFA) I would take information about any plans you already have, this could be mortgages, investments, pensions, loans or other plans or policies. If you prefer, to make things easier I can also get information directly from the providers. I would make sense of where you stand and where your productsfit into your life and future plans. I would look at each part individually and make sure you are with the appropriate provider, that your policy remains competitive and that you are making the most of what you have, both now and in the future. Our systems are designed to record policies from all providers allowing you to see everything at a glance, in order, and in one place. This helps to make sense of your finances and gives you understanding of what you have, and where you are going.
Keeping things simple
In the world of finance it is easy to overcomplicate things. The industry is full of jargon and many people I see don’t understand what they have. My philosophy is to keep things simple, structure them in the right way and move forward in the best way possible.

Don’t wait until your life changes
Many people wait until a life changing time to see an IFA, for example when they want to move house or are about to retire. I would happily see you at these times, but often it is wise to make a review when changes are not occurring just to make sure you are on the right track. It can make a huge difference over a lifetime. 6

GOOD FRIDAY SKIPPING T RADITIONALLY IN MANY Sussex towns in days gone by, men would spend the Good Friday Bank Holiday playing marbles in the street. While they were occupied in this pastime, the women were busy skipping. Because of these customs Good Friday was also known as Marbles Day, and Long Rope Day. Skipping was particularly popular in Southwick, as well as Hove and Patcham. It seems to be a tradition associated mostly with coastal communities in Southern England. During the 19th century it was most often the women from fishing families that enjoyed a day of jumping the twirling ropes, possibly because rope was readily available in seafaring towns and villages. Farming communities like those at Patcham also had ready access to rope and enjoyed the pastime through the Victorian era. In Brighton, women were still recorded as skipping on Good Friday up until the beginning of the Second World War. Streets such as Ship Street, Duke Street
10
and Middle Street could be crisscrossed with ropes, as would the old open-air fish market. An account in ‘John O’London’s Weekly’ describes two stalwart fishermen holding and turning a heavy rope while up to six or seven young women jumped in and out. Some believed the rope was believed to signify Judas hanging himself on Good Friday after betraying Jesus, but the roots of the custom or when it began aren’t known. It may in fact date back to pre-Christian times. The skipping was communal with often at least twenty or so people involved at one location, and a number of bystanders. Children enthusiastically took part, but so did adults of all ages. The men turning the ropes would sometimes be paid a few pennies for this work. The advent of the motorcar put a stop to skipping in Southwick and Brighton’s main thoroughfares, but it continued in the back streets, alleys and open spaces on Good Fridays. In Brighton, skipping on Good Fridays came to an end when in 1940, the forecourt of the fish market had to be closed off with barbed wire, because of the war. In 1954 and 1955 at South Heighton an attempt was made to revive Good Friday skipping and marbles. Around two
hundred people turned out to support the event, which was for charity, which suggests that other towns and villages like our own might enjoy reviving the tradition. In its day, Good Friday skipping took place in other counties too, including Surrey, Warwickshire and Cambridgeshire. The Brighton custom is mentioned as popular in 1863, but it was apparently already on the wane when the closing of the beaches during the Second World War finally killed it. One inland place where Good Friday skipping was popular was Cambridge, where the custom took place on the open space called Parker’s Piece. Other scattered references show that the tradition was quite widespread, being reported, for example, at Teignmouth, Devon in the late 19th century. In 1954 the Sussex County magazine printed photographs of Good Friday skipping happening at Alciston, the only place in Sussex where the tradition seems to have survived. To this day, an event takes place outside the Rose Cottage Inn there. It has turned into a local celebration with traditional music and Morris dancing as well as good food and drink. Local sides Knots of May and Chanctonbury Ring Morris perform, whatever the weather, before getting the ropes out for all to join in the skipping. It was also reported in last year’s Hastings Observer that Winkle Island would be holding its annual Good Friday long rope skipping and a marbles match, organized by the Bonfire Society in the Old Town. Perhaps it won’t be long before twirling ropes and jumping feet return to Southwick on the Easter weekend. Judy Upton

Get your skates on… summer is on the way
B
Y THE TIME you read this, the clocks will have changed and we will have the wonderful lighter evenings with us. Despite the horrendous start to the year, a few weeks of settled warm weather have really bought the garden into life, along with the mild winter. The bad spell over the New Year almost seems like a distant memory, and its testament to how quickly nature recovers.
12
It’s that time of year when you need to get your skates on in the garden as everything starts happening so fast. It’s a time of preparation and planting, with plenty of plants and vegetable seeds to be sown and planted. Keep on top of the weeds now as they will rapidly take over as soon as the slightest hint of warm weather. Give the beds plenty of attention and they will really benefit from being forked over again, as the rain has caused so much compaction to the soil Don’t be in too much of a hurry to get young tender plants planted out to make up for lost time yet. There are still chances of cold nights and snap frosts which can wipe out your hard grown efforts in one night, so as the temperatures rise, get them hardened off outside during the day to get used to the colder nights gradually, or leave them by a sunny wall, as it will give of heat during the night. The large amount of rainfall we had will also have caused some damage to the amount of nutrients in the soil, so it is well worth topping up beds and containers with some extra compost, liquid feed or slow release tablets to give the plants a good boost as we come into the main growing season Another area of the garden, which will really need some care and attention this time of the year is the lawn. Now is a good time to sort out any problems with it and to give it a weed and feed to keep the weeds down and give it a boost. Make sure the blades on the mower are sharp and remember that the first few cuts of the year should be a high cut, just nipping the tops off of the grass. If there are any bare patches, either seed it or replace with some fresh turf. The lawn will also benefit from removing any moss or thatch with a spring rake. Its hard work and makes the lawn look a mess for a while but it will really benefit from the extra air circulation and will give you a lush strong lawn for the coming summer This time of year is certainly one of the best in the garden, with so much promise of what is ahead and new life rapidly showing with colour already from the spring flowers, after the bad winter you really shouldn’t need any inspiration or excuse just to get out there and have a go and enjoy it. HOW TO USE
DIGITAL TO HELP YOU DIY To the novice DIY-er it may seem daunting to tackle some aspects of home improvement yourself, but fear not, there are several rich sources of advice, inspiration and step-by-step guides that can help you along your way to becoming a DIY guru.
H
ERE ARE SOME helpful hints for where to find the best advice for your DIY home improvement projects.
Inspiration
You may have a project in mind that has set you out on your DIY path. Alternatively, you may wish to take inspiration for a project by doing your research into what changes you want to make to your home, and what the possible options and techniques are. This allows you to scan the landscape and determine what is feasible, what tools and materials you might need to complete a project, whether there is any preparation you might need to make first, and whether there are any safety measures you need to take. There are countless sources of inspiration for interesting and unusual DIY projects you can undertake, whether beginner level (such as changing a door handle to something more ornate), to more complex projects, such as hanging a new door. While it is possible to work it out yourself, by trial and error, it is far better to be aware of the common difficulties you might encounter and how you can easily resolve them. One especially useful and easilyaccessible source of inspiration is the social media platform Pinterest. Users have boards that they label (such as; ‘Home Improvement’; or something more specific such as; ‘Making Lamp Shades’; or ‘DIY Tips’). These boards are then often linked through to advice on how to create whatever they have ‘Pinned’. Set up a Pinterest account and discover countless DIY projects, from the wildly
14
ambitious to the most delightfully simple, and find a world of DIY enthusiasts willing to share ideas and inspiration.
Step-by-Step Guides
You may have the idea for a DIY project already in mind, but need a step-bystep guide on how to successfully pull off your project. There are countless resources available to you that you may not be aware of, or have considered. For example, if you want to remove carpets in your house, and sand and polish old floor boards, you might search the video website YouTube with terms such as ‘how to sand wooden floorboards’. Alternatively, websites
such as WikiHow specialise in providing free step-by-step guides on how to do virtually anything. Often, a video guide is best if you are tackling a complex project, as it allows you to see exactly how something is achieved, rather than trying to visualise it from written instructions. There are also blogging platforms such as Tumblr or Wordpress where you can search for blogs specialising in DIY. You can visit your local library to find books instructing on DIY. If you live in London, there are a number of places you can take evening classes in up-cycling furniture, or cafes where one-off classes are available.

HOUSE HUNTERS PUT
BROADBAND BEFORE BEER
F
ORGET BREATHTAKING VIEWS, jacuzzis and en-suite bathrooms — what most househunters really want is fast and reliable broadband. A good broadband service now beats off-street parking and access to local amenities as one of the vital deciding factors for people buying a new house. The findings are the result of a nationwide study of 1,500 homebuyers and the first trial by independent estate agents to test the impact of broadband on potential buyers by including internet speeds in their adverts. Knowing that a property has good broadband speeds was routinely ranked as more important than traditional selling points such as off street parking, and access to amenities like shops and a local pub. One in five questioned had actively checked broadband speeds when evaluating a house — even before doing a recce of the local area. And one in 10 house-hunters admitted they had walked away from properties with a poor internet connection. Proving how important buyers consider good broadband, one in five new movers revealed they arranged an internet provider before connecting their gas or TV service. In fact, setting up a broadband connection was second only to finding a new electricity supplier in the priorities pecking order. As well as making a property more appealing, the study also revealed that broadband could help add to house values. One in five prospective buyers said they would be happy to pay more for a property, with a third willing to pay between two and five per cent extra, to have a high speed broadband connection — that’s an extra £15,000 on a £300,000 home. The study carried out by broadbandchoices.co.uk and property expert Henry Pryor was supplemented by a trial with independent estate agents,
Delaney’s, in which broadband speeds were included in online house adverts. This discovered that adverts in which broadband details were included along with price, room sizes and kitchen descriptions attracted twice as many viewing requests as those without. Rob Delaney, managing director of the Essex company, comments: “As with southfacing gardens and good schools, people are now on the hunt for homes with fast broadband — it’s a sign of the times. “But we were still really surprised with the results of this trial. We’re now displaying broadband speeds on all our property details going forward, as it’s clear that’s what customers are looking for.” The changing economic climate has also played a part in this shift in priorities as people don’t just rely on a good internet connection for browsing the web and TV but also for working from home. Dominic Baliszewski, of
broadbandchoices.co.uk, adds: “Broadband has become something that people are not prepared to live without, so it’s little wonder it’s now such a major factor for homebuyers — much like running water or a central heating system. “It’s very easy to check broadband speeds in a specific area so we’d urge potential home buyers to do this rather than be left disappointed.” The research findings have prompted broadbandchoices.co.uk to include all fibre optic package details on its Ofcomaccredited postcode search tool, which lets homebuyers check the broadband deals by price and speed available at their prospective new home. The site also offers a broadband speed testers for users to check their existing connection speed from anywhere in the UK — useful for those selling their homes. Both services are available at www.broadbandchoices.co.uk

SPRING CLOTHES FOR THE UNDER 5s THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK Having swaddled your toddler in layers of warm clothes over the winter months, it is finally time to peel the layers off and let them bounce around in fresh new threads this spring. But how to keep costs down? Shop Wisely
All parents know that children grow incredibly fast. A pair of trousers that fit them today might not next week. If you are rolling in money then this is no problem, but if high energy bills in winter and increased food costs are a concern, then you may be looking for more cost-effective ways to keep them in well-fitting clothes. Look on eBay for batches of clothes of particular age groups that might be suitable for your child. Many parents put their children’s clothes for sale online at a very reasonable price, virtually giving them away in the knowledge that all parents face this issue of expensive clothes and fast-growing children. You could also ask other parents at your child’s school if they have older children with clothes that no longer fit them and if you can do an exchange. There are many online networks of parents that you can tap into to find out about any children's clothes bargains or exchanges you could do.
Get Out Your Sewing Machine
For those people with a talent for craft, sewing your children’s clothes is a distinct possibility. You can even use your own old clothes as fabric to help keep costs to a minimum. There is a wide range of clothing patterns available, free of charge, online if you
24
are fastidious and spend a lot of time searching, and vintage patterns can also be found. Plus, the reward of making something yourself will be endless each time you see your child dressed in the garment you made. It also gives you the opportunity to personalise it and make it unique to them. You could embroider their favourite animal, their name or make it from a material that is their favourite colour.
Shop for the Future
Not everyone can be bothered to (or is able to) sew, and some parents might not be happy with hand-me-downs for their children. There is nothing shameful
in this and there are still viable, less expensive options to keep your child well-dressed. As children’s clothes are so expensive, it can be wise to capitalise on sales, both on the high street and with online retailers. When the sales are on, be diligent and hunt out the perfect pair of trousers, t-shirt, jumper or dress for your son or daughter and buy it twice: one in a size that fits them now, and one a size up to fit them in six to nine months. This might seem excessive when you are shopping, but compared to the cost of always buying new clothing, it is in fact more cost-effective. To vary your child’s clothes, you could buy the item in a different colour for the future.
