SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

APRIL 2016

Editor’s comment Welcome to the April Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick. Spring has finally Sprung and this is a great time of the year with new blooms on the trees and flowers starting to come up and hopefully warmer days to follow. In this month's issue we have gardening advice from Mark Oakley on what to do at this time of the year when you look at your garden and its looks a bit bare. We hope it will help you to get the very best out of your garden for the summer. In Judy Upton’s latest article she discovers the history behind streets names and how they originated. Very interesting and surprising. With the warmer weather we see a lot more people getting out there and trying to get fit so this month we have physiotherapist Louis Jones with some advice for runners or those starting on this venture on how to treat the problem of ‘runner's knees’. Have a wonderful month in April as we see the lovely changes in nature and as always we are grateful for your articles and events that you send us every month. The next time we will see you is in May. If you would like to be in the next edition please send copy by the 13th of April. Warm Regards Angela

THREE POCKET PARKS FUNDING AWARDS

At the end of last year the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) announced £1.5 million of funding to create up to 100 ‘Pocket Parks’ in deprived urban areas across the UK and invited applications of up to £15,000 per park. Heene Community Association were successful in their bid of £15,000 for a ‘Pocket Park’ at the Heene Community Centre in Worthing; as were the Fishergate Residents Association for ‘The Sanctuary’ in Laylands Court and the Butts Road Residents Association won £15,000 funding for ‘The Garden’ at Coates Court, in Southwick. Work on all three Pocket Parks has begun this month and will include a public consultation on the final designs prior to landscaping in late April, early May this year. The parks, which had to be just 0.4 hectares or smaller, will revitalise previously unloved spaces and provide a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy. Councillor Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council adds: “Congratulations to all three of these outstanding Community organisations in being awarded this funding. It is widely documented how valued green spaces are by all communities and the positive impact they have on social well-being and physical and mental health. Local parks and green spaces are essential to all of our well being and in particular in areas of social deprivation.” Councillor Paul High, Heene Ward, says: “We are all well aware of an inequality of access to well maintained green spaces across the country. I believe this programme will help address some of the imbalances found in areas of deprivation, where access to quality green space may be limited or non-existent. The determined and successful applications from all three groups is to be applauded and I look forward to visiting the ‘Pocket Park’ at the Heene Community Centre as soon as it is completed”

SHOREHAM BEACH GREEN CAFÉ UPDATE

Early concept drawings for development at Shoreham Beach Green have received a firm steer from local residents. Wilbo's were awarded preferred developer status, allowing designs to be presented to the public at an early stage. This provided the developer an opportunity to take on board the views and ideas of local residents, prior to progressing his proposal. After gathering feedback at recent consultations, the Council has been able to adopt a firm stance over which area of the Green is available for development. Whereas the idea of a cafe or restaurant with refurbished toilet facilities has been encouraged, further facilities outside the marketed boundaries such as a skate park and pitch and putt have been ruled out. Cllr Angus Dunn, Deputy Leader of Adur District Council, commented: “The developer's original concept explored ideas to utilise a much wider part of the Green than we originally marketed. The Council's initial stance was that this would only be considered with the expressed support of the community, which has not been the case. Therefore, only the marketed area will be available. There is no question of beach huts being moved or any form of development on the Local Nature Reserve. “We would like to reassure residents that we have made it very clear to the developer that any scheme must be much closer to the original specification, adhering to the specified boundaries. It is also imperative that this new development is of the highest quality and matches the local community's aspirations for the future of Shoreham Beach Green.”

SLONK HILL HISTORY COMMEMORATED 100 years ago, the area around Slonk Hill was home to 100,000 soldiers preparing to take part in one of the most devastating wars ever seen. Yet, within a few years of First World War’s cease-fire being called, the army camp - which stretched from Mill Hill to Slonk Hill and down to Old Shoreham Road — had all but passed into memory. Following painstaking research, the full history of the camp has been revealed through the ‘Training for War’ project, and is being commemorated with a special information board in Buckingham Park which was unveiled today (Wednesday, 16th March 2015) by the Chairman of Adur District Council, Carson Albury, and the Mayor of Worthing, Michael Donin. Since 2014, ‘Training for War’ has brought together a unique partnership of Worthing College students, local volunteers and curators from Worthing Museum, all supported by a Heritage Lottery grant, to dig through archives and fields in search of the truth of the Shoreham encampment. Whether uncovering proof of the camp’s truly international flavour (soldiers came from as far away as South Africa and Canada), proving the presence of a very special type of horse (thanks to a shoe only used by gun carriage carriers) or teaching students about life 6

on the front lines, ‘Training for War’ has made a significant contribution to Sussex history. Councillor Carson Albury, Chairman of Adur District Council, says: “It has been fascinating to see Training For War unfolding; everyone involved has put so much energy into this project since the very beginning and it’s really taught us all so much about our local history.” “As well as all of the work on site, the team have unearthed some amazing press articles and publications about life in the Army camp, turning it from distant history into stories which we can all relate to.” Mayor of Worthing, Councillor Michael Donin, adds: “It has been a privilege to watch the project progress and it’s a great example of how our students, volunteers and professional curators can really come together to make something happen. There have been many opportunities to stop and celebrate — or marvel — over the last two years, and installing this special information board in Buckingham Park will ensure that many more people get the chance to do so in the future.” “As a Canadian I am extremely proud of the contribution and sacrifice made by my fellow Canadians in the Great War. Canada has always answered the call for help from the Mother Country.” To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Are you making the most of your ISA investments?

T

HE LOW INTEREST rates are a good thing for many people as they have benefited from low mortgage payments over a number of years. This has helped support the economy since the credit crunch, but what about the long suffering investors? Many are retired and have previously relied on the interest rates on their investments to help support their retirement. For some it has become almost a full time job, seeking out rates, looking for cash ISAs and reinvesting their cash over and over again to get the best rates on their funds. Some have taken fixed rate cash ISAs with predetermined end dates, this gives them a fixed rate of interest over a certain period of time, but once the initial rates have ended the follow on rates are often disappointing. As interest rates are so low often people are looking at alternatives for investing their money. Many know that they can transfer their cash ISAs from provider to provider without using this year’s ISA allowance, but often don’t know that they can transfer cash ISAs to stocks and shares ISAs.

The name ‘stocks and shares ISA’may put some people off, they may think that the whole investment must be in stocks and shares, but this isn’t the case. The name ‘stocks and shares ISA’ may put some people off, they may think that the whole investment must be in stocks and shares, but this isn’t the case. These types of ISA can invest in a number of different assets, stocks and shares, property and fixed interest; a lower risk asset class. Stocks and shares ISAs can be geared to a lower level of risk just like other investments. One of the first things an independent financial adviser should ascertain is the level of risk a person is happy to take along with their capacity for loss. In the past this would have been a verbal discussion, however, now many use structured questionnaires which will indicate a level of risk for a client. These questionnaires are then assessed and a full discussion follows to ensure the investment is made at the correct risk level, and a level which the person feels comfortable with. The adviser will then work out the amount that should be left in cash investments such as the building society, cash ISAs or current account. This will cover amounts for any pre-known purchases, an emergency fund, and perhaps an amount to 8

supplement income for a period of time. Investments into stocks and shares ISAs and other vehicles will be for longer term investments ensuring there is time to ride out any fluctuations in the market. Although the growth on these investments cannot be pre-determined or guaranteed, longer term they should outperform investments in cash. Shoreham’s Street Names

T

HE NAMES OF the streets of Shoreham give glimpses into the town’s past. When the mouth of the river Adur silted up before 1622, a new mud bank, at first washed over by the tides was created, immediately west of New Shoreham. It was called Scurvy Bank and at times had an offshoot upstream called Mardyke Bank. Scurvy has not stuck at a Shoreham street name, probably as it’s an unpleasant medical condition, but Mardyke has. Ferry Road once led to the ferry across the Adur that has since been replaced by the footbridge and its glass replacement. The Marlinspike was named after a tool for rope splicing used on board a ship. The nautical-themed street names do not just occur on the beach however. Dolphin Road bears the name of a ship rather than the sea mammal. The hull of the ship The Dolphin was used as a shed in this area at one time The Dolphin had been a pirate vessel in the service of the English crown, raiding and looting the ships of other countries. Hardys Street is named after Admiral Thomas Masterson Hardy, of HMS Victory fame. Collingwood Court is called after another admiral involved in the Battle of Trafalgar. Mansell Road is a tribute to Francis Mansell whose ship was involved in Charles II’s escape from England. Falcon Road bears the name of a gunship, as does Fowey Close. Feversham Close is also named after a ship. Some street names have been changed over time, sometimes more than once. Shoreham High Street was called Procession Street from the Middle Ages, as trade guilds held processions when they paraded to the church on certain feast days carrying banners etc. By the 15th century the processions had evolved into religious pageants where tradesmen dressed in costumes, often travelling on a cart acted out scenes with subjects like The Creation, Noah’s Ark, David and Goliath, the Birth of Christ. Church Street was Cockin Street, in 1693, but referred to as Cook Street in 1447. East Street was East Lane, and Middle Street was Star Lane, possibly because it contained an inn of that name. Some Shoreham street names that have vanished are Loman’s Back Lane, Mr. Norton’s Lane, Patchings Lane, and Post Office Lane. In the 14th century, Middle Street was called Moderlove Street,

10

presumably from the surname borne by Thomas Moderlove in 1296. Another theory, supported by historian Henry Cheal is that rents from this street went to a chantry at the altar of the Blessed Mary in St Mary’s church and to pay maintenance of a priest for this chantry. Henry Cheal himself, author of ‘The Story Of Shoreham’, the famous book of the town’s past, which was published in 1921, has Cheal Close now named in his honour. West Street was in the 18th century Ropewalk, a name that it still retains today after it crosses Hebe Road (Hebe was the name of the public house here until recent times). West Street was Ropemaker’s Lane in 1720, and White Lion Street in Medieval days. Unidentified names that seem to relate to the lanes running off the High Street include Sowtery Street (mentioned in 1432), Brewhouse Lane (1682), Stable Lane (1687), Rotten Row and Malthouse Lane (1816). Pond Road, Mill Lane, Oxen Avenue are reminders of the town’s rural past, referring to a pond, a mill and a route formerly used by cattle drovers, all of which have left little trace. Other Shoreham street names, as in most towns, have patriotic roots, e.g. Crown Road, Victoria Road and Queens Place. Brunswick Road is a reference to Caroline of Brunswick, wife of George IV. William IV’s wife Adelaide has Adelaide Square called after her. Connaught Avenue remembers the Earl of Connaught, a son of Queen Victoria. Clarendon Road is a nod to the 1st Earl Of Clarendon who supported Charles I and II. The Marquis of Ormonde who also aided Charles II has Ormonde Avenue named after him. Some streets are named after local landowners, including Colvill Bridger whose family once occupied Buckingham House. He has Colvill Avenue named after him. Shirley Close is named after another prominent local family. Some former local politicians also have streets named after them, including the 6th Earl of Winterton (Winterton Way), Sir William Peare Williams, (Williams Road). The army is represented by General Gordon of Khartoum, (Gordon Road) and Lieutenant General Sir George Frederick Gorringe who served in the Boer war and World War I (Gorringe Close). Nicolson Drive is named after Battle Of Britain pilot Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson who was awarded a Victoria Cross. World War I pilot Cecil Pashley is commemorated by Cecil Pashley way that skirts the airport. Judy Upton

Planning a trip to the Garden Centre

W

E HAVE HAD Easter and the clocks have changed, bringing the longer evenings, with the days still getting longer and hopefully warmer. It really does begin to feel like the gate to spring and summer may well and truly be slowly easing open! Now is the time of year when everything starts to go mad and time and the garden races away with you. There is always a big temptation to fill up any holes in the displays in the garden and to try and get everything looking its best. It’s the time of year

12

when you will walk into any garden centre at the weekend and see people juggling trolleys of plants, and standing in the car park with furniture, barbecues and more plants, trying to work out how to fit them into the boot of the car. In fact the head scratching, normally doesn’t stop there. Once they get everything home there is a big temptation to shove everything into any available space and because there are a few left over, well stuff them in with the rest it will be ok! It really does underline the old saying act in haste and repent in leisure. Before you make the trip and spend your money, spend a little time looking around and seeing exactly what you want or need and what will actually work. A little planning can make all the difference, to both your pocket and the look of the garden. Far better to buy a few decent shrubs that will compliment what is already there and grow into the space, rather than buy as much as you can, because you liked it in the garden centre and it looked nice, but it won’t actually grow in the position you decide to put it. Most plants have clear planting instructions on them, giving an idea of future size and height and where they like to be positioned to get the best from them. Follow the instructions and you will get a much better reward from the plant. Unfortunately I see so many plants, placed in unsuitable positions, where they are destined to struggle or die. Another common failing is to plant as many plants as possible in one area to instantly fill the area up, or start neatly spacing the plants out, but because there’s some left over, they get thrown into the bed as an afterthought, because you don’t want to waste them. That’s fine for a couple of months, but in a few seasons they will outgrow the area, and be fighting with each other for food, light and water and you are likely to end up with a cluster of sickly, bad performing plants. So before you spend any money, take some time to look around the garden and just have a vague idea of what you want and take a little time to plan what will work in the garden. It’s so much more satisfying to see something thrive and give do well, but there is always room for the little extra something you like the look of, but do read the instructions. They are there to help, as are the staff in the garden centres, who often have a wealth of knowledge Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065

Yvonne's solo show

A

RT5 GALLERY IS delighted to announce Paradise, a solo exhibition of work by soughtafter Devon-based artist Yvonne Coomber! This highly-anticipated annual event is the perfect introduction to spring, showcasing an exclusive new collection of the artist’s signature glittering floral paintings, alongside her dreamy landscapes and an exciting new collection of designer cushions. After gaining a degree in Philosophy and Literature at Brighton University, Yvonne went on to study Fine Art in

16

Sussex, broadening her artistic ability and immersion into the world of painting. Over the last decade, she has established herself as a highly collectable artist, with her paintings becoming instantly recognisable worldwide. Yvonne’s love of nature and the English countryside deeply influences her work, often painting in the depths of the Devonshire meadows to draw immediate inspiration from the picturesque surroundings. She captures the chaotic yet harmonious energy within nature, whilst bringing warmth and joy to

the canvas. Yvonne beautifully blends various materials to create layer upon layer of tactile texture, adding another dimension to her captivating paintings. The glitter, reminiscent of early morning dew, the vibrant colours conjuring the kaleidoscopic palette of the countryside, and the delicate scattering of flowers come together organically in her unique artistic vision. ‘We’re delighted to be hosting an annual solo exhibition of acclaimed artist Yvonne Coomber, after the remarkable successes of her previous solo shows in Sussex with us. Her paintings are increasingly sought-after, and we’re proud to have been the foremost exhibitor of Yvonne’s work in the South for the past decade.’ Gallery manager Melissa Luckhurst remarks. Visit this exclusive exhibition and lose yourself in Yvonne’s charming vision of nature as a joyful meadow where dreams unfold! Paradise is a free exhibition running from 9th to 17th April at Art5 Gallery, 5 Bartholomews, Brighton. BN1 1HG Visit: www.art5gallery.com

‘The Problem’ Marathon Runners Knee It’s getting into the last few weeks of marathon training now and hopefully you’ve done most of the hard work and can start to taper. This month Louis Jones explores one of the most common running injuries, especially common in long distance events, Iliotibial band syndrome, better known as runners knee.

I

T IS SO common that as runners constantly build their mileage to their chosen race, the closer they get, the injury rears its ugly head. By the time the injury is present, it can be a nightmare to recover from, and too close to the race to cure completely.

What is Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries. It occurs when the Iliotibial band, a large ligament, which runs down the outside of the thigh, from the

hip to the shin, is tight or inflamed. It helps to stabilize and move the knee joint.

How does it occur?

When we run with poor mechanics or incorrect support from running trainers, we can put excessive strain or force through our knees and hips, depending on how we impact the ground, and the way our joints are allowed to move. One of the most common ways in which ITBS occurs, is if we roll inwards excessively at the ankle and foot, allowing our knee to twist inwards and a strain to the ITB. Another way may be if our gluteus muscles (our buttocks) are weak, we can get rotating and collapsing in of the knee, again putting strain on the band.

How can we avoid it?

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

1. Correct Footwear Wearing the correct type of running trainer with the correct type of support, will allow for assisting your natural biomechanics, so that you can avoid putting your joints and muscles under undue stress. 2. Glut strengthening exercises By strengthening your gluts, you are increasing your hip stability, which controls how your hip and trunk moves over your knee, ankle and foot, and will reduce your chances of dropping our hip during your free leg swinging through. 3. Stretching of the IT band Stretching the IT Band will reduce the risk of friction and rubbing between the IT Band and the knee, so inflammation doesn’t build up, causing pain. 4. Sports Massage/self massage-foam rolling By having regular sports massage and using foam rollers to self-massage the side of your thigh, you can maintain a normal IT band and continue to train for your race. If you’re suffering with symptoms of this condition, it is important that you seek advice from a physiotherapist, as soon as possible, as the earlier you can treat it the better the recovery you will have. Please get in touch if you would like to make an appointment, on 01273 467614 or email: louisjones.physio@gmail.com. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Confident public speaking: learning from stand-up comedians Local stand-up comedian and trainer Gerry Thompson shows how much comedians can teach us about gaining confidence and overcoming nerves when we need to give a speech or presentation

“There are two types of speaker — those that are nervous — and those that are liars!” – Mark Twain

A

RE YOU TERRIFIED when you have to get up and talk in front of people? Does the prospect of giving a wedding speech fill you with dread? Will you do anything in the world to avoid making a presentation at work? If so, then you’re probably…. quite normal. Glosophobia or fear of public speaking affects about 75 % of our population, and many people are more fearful of giving a speech than they are of dying. Most people think that there’s not much that can be done about this – that some people are confident speakers and others just aren’t. But this is quite wrong; confident and effective speaking can be developed and learned. Stand-up comedians are probably the most striking example of confident public speaking you can think of, in probably the most challenging of all speaking situations – alone on stage for an extended time with an audience that may become hostile, with no agenda or content other than what arises from their own individuality, and with an expectation to reliably entertain the audience. Very few people are born confident stand-ups; so what do they do to get like that, and how can we use their methods to be both more confident and more effective? Here are the top ten comedians’ tips and strategies – plus an extra one.

1 Prepare thoroughly

It’s impossible to over-emphasise the importance of this point, on which everything else rests. Comedians may look like they’re being spontaneous, but they’re not; they prepare their material over a long period, they test it out to make sure it works, and they keep refining it. So prepare your content, rehearse it as much as you can, practice microphone technique if you’ll be using that, find out about the setting in which you’re presenting, and check out any technology you might be depending on. 22

2 Have good material

Have content that your audience can relate to and recognise their own experiences within. Include an element of story within the material. Comedians learn their material off by heart; you probably won’t have to do this, but you do need to have good access to the content so you know what you’re going to say next, and be able to pick up again if you get lost or become nervous. This access might be in the form of a script, bullet point notes, or incorporated into a Powerpoint presentation.

3 Structure your presentation

Again, comedians do this more than you think. Even a short speech should be consciously structured, with a beginning, middle and end. In a more formal presentation, the beginning might for instance consist of introducing yourself and giving a sense of what you’re going to be talking about; the middle comprises the main content; and the end might be a brief review of main points and a call to action. This structure will help you come across as confident and competent.

4 Make a strong start

Comedians know that first impressions are crucial. Comedians behave as if they own the stage – it’s their territory. Adopt a stable and grounded stance, and if you move go back to that strong stance. Adopting the body language of confidence helps you feel confident; it’s also what the audience wants to see. Pause and look at the audience before starting to speak.

5 Engage with your audience

Comedians know how crucial it is to connect with your audience in order to hold their attention. Be very interested in your audience, both collectively and also individuals who stand To advertise call: 01273 452065

out; practice ‘reading the audience - be aware of what is going on with them and how they are responding, and make sure they’re getting what you’re saying. It’s an energy exchange – be energised and enthusiastic. A conversational style of delivery is helpful, as if talking to friends. Eye contact is crucial. Getting the audience to interact with you is a big bonus.

6 Pace and timing

Avoid rattling off your material at high speed, which can easily happen if you’re nervous. The simple way to achieve this is to build in pauses, which naturally slows you down. Pausing is also the core of the legendary phenomenon of comic timing; in a speech it will add impact, break up content, allow points to sink in, and provide opportunity to gather your thoughts if you lose the plot.

7 Breath control

Remember to breathe systematically, especially if nervous; this can link into your pauses. Abdominal breathing is most conducive to confidence and groundedness, as opposed to shallow upper-chest breathing. Practice breathing exercises if this is a problem for you.

8 Humour

Humour dispels tension and adds impact, persuasion and memorability. The best humour arises naturally out of your material and your natural style of speaking; avoid the temptation to ‘shoe-horned’ an unrelated joke in to relieve dull material. And humour must be appropriate to audience and setting; don’t make light of matters which should be kept serious.

9 Fake it till you make it

Comedians routinely demonstrate that it’s possible to appear more confident than you actually are, even when things aren’t going well – they go through the motions and show the outward signs of confidence, and keep doing this until they get back on track. Remember that many signs of nerves are not visible to the audience, even though they feel overwhelming; put your attention on the audience rather than yourself. Nervous sensations can often be transformed into positive excitement. Things going wrong can often be turned round to work in your favour, by acknowledging the problem and seeing the funny side of it.

10 Be yourself

Reveal something of yourself and let your own individuality come through in your style of presentation - just as comedians express their distinctive persona and their unique take on life.

11 Visualise success

If you’re nervous before speaking, experiencing negative mental images of how things are going to go, practice imagining the audience appreciating what you have to say and responding positively. Keep replacing the negative images with positive versions, until they becomes a habit. You can also formulate plans to deal with things that might go wrong. Brighton & Hove Arts Council Gets A Face Lift

F

OR THE FIRST time in over forty years, Brighton & Hove Arts Council has been given a brand new look with a complete change of visual identity across all its publications and its website. Gone is the green line logo, now replaced with a colourful modern design in the bright seaside colours of orange, blues and sand. The new look is the work of local graphic designer, Melanie Sramek-Bennett. The Brighton & Hove Arts Council’s main publication, the Arts Diary, details the activities of over 65 not-forprofit groups in the area, all of whom are members of the organisation, representing, music, visual arts, singing, drama and the spoken word. The Arts Diary is available free of charge and can be found in local libraries, museums, pubs, restaurants and shops as well as online on the website. The Brighton & Hove Arts Council website has also been given a face lift. In addition to details of members’ events, with a “click through” to their sites, it also provides information on all BHAC activities. Brighton & Hove Arts Council has been run entirely by volunteers for over forty years. Apart from publishing the Arts Diary and ArtsLink, a members’ news letter, BHAC organises an annual Art Exhibition, a Drama Awards Competition and a Sussex–wide Poetry Competition. www.bh-arts.org.uk

Charlie Green and The Pirate’s Treasure Travel back in time with Martyn Blunden’s story of adventure on the high seas

L

OCAL AUTHOR MARTYN Blunden’s first novel, Charlie Green and the Pirate’s Treasure, was inspired by watching his young daughters play ‘pretend’ games. “Listening, watching and joining in with my two daughters’ voyages of imagination gave me a desire to show them how you could put down in words your own stories for others to enjoy,” explains Martyn. “Although I would occasionally accuse them of being ‘away with the fairies’, they retaught me the ability to open your mind to your own imagination.” The namesake of his novel, Charlie Green, is a courageous, good-natured 11-year-old, who lives with his mother, older brother and little sister. After moving to a new house next to a disused airfield, he ignores his mother’s strict orders to stay well away and convinces his brother to join him in his exploration. There, in one of the dilapidated hangars, they find a secret aeroplane with magical abilities. The previous owner of their new home, Oliver, mysteriously

disappeared many years before and left behind his special transport. Due to a mistake, he is actually stuck in the past, onboard a sailing ship in the 17th century. On a quest to find a treasure map belonging to the infamous pirate Captain William Kidd, how successful his plans for finding the treasure will be all depends on the ingenuity of the Green siblings... Martyn believes that we all have a lot to learn from children’s attitude towards creativity. “As adults, we often feel constrained by the way we are expected to think and behave in a mature society,” he observes. “As a writer, however, we can escape into the mind of our former childhood and tell everyone what we see without fear.” Martyn is a flying instructor and technical writer, as well as writing humorous newsletters on a regular basis. He has had two aircraft technical books and national magazine articles published. He currently lives with his partner and two daughters. The book will be published on the 28th April, priced £8.99. ISBN: 9781785890673. http://bit.ly/Charlie-Green

Treating Verrucae Karen Burrett and Gaynor Platt, local podiatrists at First Foot Clinic, discuss the common problem of verrucae.

V

ERRUCAE ARE WARTS caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet. They can even be found around the edges of the nails. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal changing/ showering areas. An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up the virus. Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin. Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone. Some individuals are more susceptible than others. The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots. These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained. Karen or Gaynor will be able to advise you on a variety of treatments that are available both within the clinical setting and/or for you to try at home. Further advice will also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future. If you suspect you have a verrucae or indeed any other foot problem contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
