ROPETACKLE ARTS CENTRE: 10 YEARS ON
R
OPETACKLE SPOKESMAN MARK Phillips said: “April 2017 marks an incredible 10 years since Ropetackle first opened, and what a decade it’s been! “To celebrate, we’ve programmed a series of special events throughout the month featuring a selection of outstanding artists from Georgie Fame to John Cooper Clarke, Midge Ure to Claire Martin OBE. As well as this we’ve organised several free activities and workshops covering a myriad of musical genres, plus we’re launching a fundraising campaign to help improve and upgrade some key equipment. “All of this is contained in our special 10th anniversary brochure which can be downloaded from the website, picked up in centre, and found in various shops, businesses and outlets across Adur. “More than this, in the brochure you can meet the team behind Ropetackle, including the trustees and volunteers, and hear from some of the people who have played a key part in the Ropetackle story so far.” Artistic director and trustee Anne Hodgson, who has been with Ropetackle since the very beginning, said: “10 years ago the centre opened with no heating, no audiences and no money! Today, Ropetackle is an award-winning venue with a national reputation attracting audiences from all over the world.” The journey however has not always been smooth. In 2011, the centre almost closed due to a funding crisis, yet was saved by incredible public support. Anne added: “The success of Ropetackle is a triumph for all the community. This is reflected in the loyal audience support, the way the community generously responded to the 2011 appeal, and by the numerous volunteers who have worked tirelessly to create a welcoming, safe and secure environment for our audiences.” Community lies at the heart of Ropetackle continued Mark: “Reaching our 10th anniversary is particularly significant because not many people realise Ropetackle is a charity staffed almost entirely by volunteers. Our box office, stewards and bar staff are all from the local community, giving their time to make Ropetackle happen.” For Shoreham resident and leading UK concert guitarist Richard Durrant: “Ropetackle represents the very best of what can be achieved by a bunch of determined locals.” He added: “Ropetackle is something Sussex can be truly proud of. It is not just a thriving arts centre, but an inspiring miracle. Opened at the start of a crippling recession and initially
greeted with scepticism, the volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly against staggering odds to create their own, very special success story.” Richard is not the only artist to offer kind words. Brighton’s international bestselling author Peter James said: “I’m just thrilled how Ropetackle has been taken to heart by so many, and love giving my annual talks here — just incredible warmth and enthusiasm from the audiences.” Adding to this, pop icon Midge Ure — performing at the centre for a third time during the celebrations — said: “Playing at Ropetackle is always a delight. Venues like this are the lifeblood of the music industry and it’s vitally important that they remain great places to play. Anne and her team always go the extra mile to make sure everyone has a great time!” Such comments reflect what Anne believes to be a warmth and spontaneity about Ropetackle that comes from its community heart: “This reputation has spread and enables us to attract the quality artists that you see in the programme.” And Ropetackle has had its fair share of big names over the years. Alongside the likes of Midge Ure and Peter James, in 2012 The Who frontman Roger Daltrey performed alongside bandmate Simon Townshend and in 2014, this year’s Brighton Festival guest director Kate Tempest launched her new book of poetry. As well as this Ropetackle frequently hosts intimate preview shows with big name comedians, previous names including Alan Carr, Jo Brand, Sean Lock and Romesh Ranganathan to name a few. Ropetackle has also launched a fundraising appeal alongside its birthday celebrations. After 10 years some of their key equipment is now deteriorating and they need to raise £20,000 to cover the necessary upgrades. Their target is to reach this by mid-May. They've organised a Race Night (May 6) and Silent Auction (May 13) in aid of this. They are also encouraging people to join our Friends scheme which will not only support the cause but includes benefits such as priority booking. www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Investments — spreading the risk
I
N THE PAST when people arranged investments or pensions they were sometimes advised to invest into multiple plans with different providers. This was a form of diversification. By spreading your money around, it may lower the risk of making a loss.. Often people would invest in funds which were managed by that particular life company’s fund managers. The only way of spreading your money around was to make a portfolio of different investments. As time has progressed, providers have provided more choice in terms of funds available, your funds may be managed by an external fund manager who has links to the company you invested with. Often though, once the plans had been set up, many people did not review their arrangements. Therefore you could have been invested in the same funds for the whole term of your investment or pension. Many people have no idea of the performance, or whether they are still invested in the best possible place.
behalf to ensure you don’t miss any of your ISA allowances. So, if you are struggling with paperwork from many different providers, and you are unsure if your investments are in the right funds, it could be time for a review.. For a free initial consultation and an independent assessment of your situation, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
"Investments can be made into many different funds under one overall investment." By investing across different companies, although this diversifies your investments, quite often it can lead to complication and difficulty in putting the information together for an overall assessment of your risk levels and performance. It can also make tax complicated as each investment needs to be assessed separately. Times have moved on and it is no longer necessary to take such a complex approach. Investments can be made into many different funds under one overall investment. The funds can be reviewed and monitored to ensure that you are invested in the most appropriate funds throughout the term. Often people are much more diversified than they were before, with a good mix of funds at the risk level which suits their own circumstances and attitude to risk. No longer is it necessary to have many different investments and sets of paperwork to deal with. This simple, yet more diversified approach often makes tax a lot simpler to deal with. Your ISA contributions can also be managed on your 6

Tales of the hills
T
HE SOUTH DOWNS that border our area have as much history and folklore associated with them, as the towns. Mill Hill, just north of Old Shoreham was once known as Good Friday Hill because of the custom of children rolling hard-boiled eggs dyed in different colours (and also oranges) down its steep slope to the river valley, on Good Friday. The children of Old Shoreham would march up the hill in procession and on arrival would also take part in other games and amusements too. Mill Hill had two windmills during the 1700s. One was a stone mill, in ruins by 1782. A fire in 1889 destroyed the other one, a post mill, which had been built around 1766. This windmill was sited on the west side of Mill Hill, just north of where there is now the cutting for the bypass. Among the buildings demolished in the 1960s so that the cutting could be excavated, was the mill house that had belonged to this windmill. Only the ground floor of the mill house was lived in, upstairs was where the sacks of corn were stored. On the opposite side of the Adur Valley was the Lancing Down Windmill, which had been mentioned in documents during the 16th Century. In North Lancing, above Lancing Manor, there was an area known as the Mill Field on the downland to the east of the chalk pit and the track leading up to it became what is now Mill Road. Of the mill itself nothing remains. John Olliver was the miller at Highdown Hill Mill above Worthing. Near it in 1766, at the age of 57, he built his own tomb. It was inscribed “For the reception of John Olliver when deceased to the will of God. Granted by William Westbrook Richardson Esq., 1766”. John Olliver also kept his coffin near him for the rest of his life. He also built a summerhouse to be a memorial to himself. When he did eventually die, aged 84 in 1793, according to the provisions of his will, his body was carried to the tomb, and a girl of nine, rather than a clergyman, read the lesson. This, written by the miller himself, talked of his distrust of every man and his acceptance of God’s judgement. Two thousand mourners were present, dressed as John Olliver had requested in cheerful clothes. In his will he left £20 a year
for the upkeep of his tomb and summerhouse. Only the ‘Miller’s Tomb’ remains today. Another slightly macabre story of the Downs involves a witch living near to the former public house, the Sussex Pad. She is said to have cast enchantments in order to stop carters from moving their wagons. The wagonowners countered the spell by running their knife blades around their ironrimmed wheels, the sound supposedly making the witch howl in pain. A nearby pond also had magical qualities, according to local superstitions. It was an example of a bottomless pond or Knucker Hole in which people or objects could disappear forever. A Knucker Hole is supposed to never freeze over and the local one is reputed to be home to a sleeping dragon. Chanctonbury Ring is said to be frequented by the Devil and various fairies, especially at midnight on Midsummer Eve. The Downs were also known for their Fairy Rings. In the days before we knew how fungi propagate, a supernatural explanation for the perfect circles of bright green grass that would mysteriously appear over night did not seem so far-fetched. A story featuring fairies and the Downs is the tale of two thieves who once stole a pig in Beeding. They popped it in a sack and headed off with it. When they stopped for a rest, at the foot of Beeding Hill, they put the sack down with its opening over a hole which happened to be the home of a fairy. Like most fairies in Sussex folktales the fairy was keen to play a trick on unsuspecting mortal folk. Thus it decided to quietly release the pig and to take its place. The two thieves woke and climbed the hill. As they did so they heard a voice calling “Dick, Dick, where are you?”“In a sack, pick-a-bag, riding up Beeding Hill”, came the reply, no doubt terrifying the thieves. The Adur Valley is also the site of a disappearing parish. Just South of Steyning, close to the churches of Coombs and Botolphs, there was previously a parish named ‘Bidlington’. In the 1200s, it had both a church and a cemetery. The church was dedicated to Mary Magdalen and gave its name to Maudlin Farm in the area. Bidlington once had a leper colony too which was known as Maladria. Judy Upton

Looking after your lawn
I
T’S THAT TIME of year again. The weather is improving day by day and the days are getting longer. Add to that the change in the clocks to summer time, mixed in with the Easter break and we are definitely out of the starting blocks in the race towards summer. If you love being in the garden, then enjoy every minute as it gets busy now! With the madness of the long Easter weekend in the garden, many of you will hopefully have had a good chance to get out into the garden and got to grips with many of the jobs that have needed doing for some time. Don’t worry if you are a little late with some jobs. Nature doesn’t run to out
calendar, so be guided by the weather. If it means pruning or planting a little late, the plants will cope. The centre piece of most gardens is the lawn. Without the sight of green grass, many people feel a garden isn’t complete. Personally as much as I love grass I can also see the attraction of other alternatives such as gravel gardens and the ever more popular artificial grass, if it suits your circumstances and you can’t or don’t want to cope with the regular maintenance. To get the best from the lawn, taking care of it is essential. I have laid lawns that five years on look like bowling green’s where they have lovingly been looked after. I have also seen lawns we have laid that have been virtually destroyed in 12 months through lack of any care. Now is also a good time to look at having a new lawn laid, giving it time to establish before the drier weather sets in. It’s the perfect time to work on the lawn and get it ready for the summer. It’s a good idea to give the lawn a feed. These are available from most garden centers and contain just the right mix of nutrients to give the lawn a boost. It takes a lot of wear and tear and is made up of lots of tiny plants after all. Follow the instructions carefully on these feeds however as too much can do more harm than good. Get rid of any unsightly weeds such as dandelions, thistles or plantains that will be starting to show themselves. These can be easily dug out. Any bare patches can be patched in with either seed, or new turf. If you are removing any turf for new beds, it’s always useful to look for any patches that need repair as they will blend in well with the rest of the lawn. Before you start the annual ritual of mowing the lawn, check that the blade is sharp; otherwise it will tear the grass, causing further damage. Cutting the grass is undoubtedly one of the best ways of maintaining it. It encourages new and thicker growth and it also helps to eradicate the larger weeds. Make sure you keep the mowing regular though, and set the height of the blades to suit the growth of the lawn. A good first high cut and a trim of the edges will make the world of difference to the look of the whole garden and the smell of the grass will make you think summer is on the way. I can almost hear the lawn mowers in the gardens in the early evenings now and the smell of the first cut grass. Definitely one of the best times of year, so get out and enjoy it! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Avoiding the pitfalls of online divorce An online divorce was good enough for Gary Lineker and his now ex-wife, so why shouldn’t every divorcing couple give it a go? Hannah Millrain, Associate Solicitor at Quality Solicitors Howlett Clarke explains… E DO MANY other things online now, including starting new relationships that may lead to marriage. However online divorce does not guarantee a cheap, quick end to an unhappy marriage that people hope for. Recently, a national newspapers reported on Tini Owens, who has asked the Court of Appeal to overturn a family court ruling which said she could not divorce her husband. She claims to be locked into a loveless 37 year marriage. She petitioned for divorce on the grounds of his unreasonable behaviour, but the judge ruled that her husband’s behaviour had not been unreasonable. Divorce proceedings are full of pitfalls if you do not know the correct procedure. For example, what if your ex agrees to a divorce based on two years separation with consent, but then does not return the Acknowledgement of Service to the court?
I had a client who had started court proceedings herself and now could not understand why the court would not allow her to proceed with her divorce on the basis of her husband’s adultery, despite the fact that he had admitted to that in the Acknowledgement of service. Following my advice she understood the difficulty (which might have appeared to her to be a small legal technicality but neverthless was thwarting the process) and how to go about getting it sorted. Also, online divorces only deal with the formalities of dissolving your marriage. You still need to sort out the finances, such as whether the home will be sold, how any sale proceeds will be divided. I won’t even begin to discuss what happens to pensions as that is certainly an issue which requires some expert advice! Even if you and your ex spouse have agreed on the financial split, you still need to get that drawn up into a binding court order, referred to as a “Consent Order”. Without this your ex can come back in future years and make a claim over your assets, even after you believe you are divorced and all matters are finalised. Whilst it might seem quicker and cheaper to deal with the divorce and finances between you, without seeking legal advice, in the long run many couples find that it is far more cost effective and ultimately less stressful to use an experienced solicitor to help with all the formalities. Where there are disagreements about the children and financial agreements costs can begin to rise. It can then be

W
helpful to use a mediator to help reach an agreement between you. Again, the cost of this might seem high at first, but its much cheaper than ending up in court. Whilst there is usually no need to have a court order for the arrangements for the children if you have reached an agreement, you do still need to put the financial agreement into a Consent Order. How then can I and my colleagues at Quality Solicitors Howlett Clarke help you? Firstly we do all the hard work, after a long day at work and looking after the children do you really want to investigate family law? A divorce petition while it is a document is a legal document and each question has a legal implication. Secondly we are here to draft a set of proceedings that do what you need them to do: ensure that proceedings remain amicable, are served on some one even though you haven’t seen them for several years or draft allegations carefully to ensure the court will approve the divorce. Finally we are here to answer any questions. If I had a penny for every time some one came to see me and thought financial matters were resolved simply because they had decree absolute I would be a very wealthy woman! At Quality Solicitors Howlett Clarke we appreciate costs can be a serious issue for most clients and so we have a fixed fee divorce scheme. Most people pay an electrician if they have an electrical problem, if you issue divorce proceedings and have property or a pension shouldn’t you understand the consequences? Whiplash! This month, Louis Jones looks at the painful whiplash injury, most commonly caused through a road traffic accident.
I
F YOU’VE EVER been unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident with another vehicle, then the impact of the collision can violently and forcefully throw the head forward and back, depending on the direction of impact, resulting in an overstretching of muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck and shoulder region. Whiplash is as common in passengers as it is in drivers.
What causes Whiplash?
The velocity of the head being thrown forward and back causes overstretching of soft tissues around the neck and shoulder region, as well as possible compression of vertebrae, resulting in inflammation of joint and soft tissue, making movement very painful.
What symptoms would you expect to experience with Whiplash?
• Severe neck and shoulder pain • Pain felt on movement of the head • A restriction of movement in the head due to pain and stiffness • Headaches resulting from straining muscles joining the base of the skull • Nausea and dizziness • Difficulty getting comfortable in bed when lying • Pins and needles and/or numbness in the upper limbs • Pain in your neck and upper limbs when coughing or sneezing with force

What should you do if you experience Whiplash?
First and foremost, you should contact your doctor, as they may be able to prescribe painkillers or antiinflammatories, and it will be recorded on your medical records. Secondly, you should notify your insurance company, as medical treatment such as physiotherapy can be arranged and covered for by your insurance. As with most acute injuries, it is important to help reduce any further damage caused by bleeding, by applying ice packs to the affected area, and to rest the area within reason, although, I do recommend very gentle mobility exercises and stretches to try and maintain movement, and so as not to stiffen up. The earlier you can receive treatment for a whiplash, the better in my opinion, therefore if you are unfortunate enough to suffer with whiplash, you should consult a physiotherapist, who will be able to assist and speed up recovery, as well as advise about driving, and prescribe exercises to help you. If you have any queries relating to this article, please feel free to contact me on 01273 467614 or email me at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com
SHOREHAM WORDFEST PRESENTS ‘CELEBRATING SHAKESPEARE’ THURSDAY 21ST TO SUNDAY 24TH APRIL 2016 A heady pot-pourri of Shakespeare-related delights to mark the four hundredth anniversary of the death of the ‘Sweet Swan of Avon’ and to celebrate his life and works. Over the course of four days you can choose from an eclectic mix of events ranging from dance to discussion, sonnets to soliloquies, literary highlights to historic insights, strolling players to Seven Singers, authentic Elizabethan food to all round food for thought… A great Film Night — Brush up your Shakespeare with Kenneth Branagh’s great film of ‘Much Ado about Nothing.’ Savour again its comedy, wit and suspense. Is it Bardolatry? Come and discuss whether Shakespeare’s work is relevant to us today. Take a look at ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and Howard Jacobson’s 2016 novel, ‘Shylock is My Name — The Merchant of Venice Retold, with Mo Charlwood. Life, love and laughter — Gain intriguing insight into Shakespeare’s sonnets, then hear some of them sung and played by the fabulous, unique Shakespeare Heptet. Look out for Pop-Up Strolling Players — Performing Arts students from Worthing College and young fans of the Bard, the ‘Shakespeare Riot’, parading and declaiming in the streets and cafes of Shoreham, a Sonneteer, stilt walker, even perhaps a fire-eater. ‘So long lives this…’ — Find out all about how to write your own sonnet in a workshop with Jeremy Tomlinson, designed to give both your brain and heart a lively and fun workout.
Whatever delights you, annoys you, your loves or hates, you can express in this great poetic form. Discover ‘How Shakespeare Happened’: How his brilliance emerged from within the vivid cultural maelstrom of Elizabethan England, in an illuminating talk from Janet Pressley with illustrations and dramatic readings. Celebrate ‘Shakespeare Night’: A colourful feast for ears, eyes and tongue — a welcoming tot of mead, a flower-decked cold buffet of Elizabethan victuals, soliloquies, madrigals, an Elizabethan ceilidh with music and dancing from the wonderful Kate’s Kitchen Band and caller, the opportunity to come in costume, Elizabethan or Shakespearean, and of course a bar. The tumults of ‘Sussex in the Time of Shakespeare’: Come and be enlightened and entertained by our local historian Chris Hare; the real dramas and tribulations of Sussex life — The ‘Vicar of Cuckfield’ scandal, the Spanish Armada, the ups and downs of daily life and more… A delicious taste of ‘Singing in the Age of Shakespeare’ — Open to all, whether you sing in a choir or only in the bath, come and join in the denouement to the festival. THERE’S A PRIDE OF LIONS ROAMING ADUR!
T
HE YEAR 2017 is probably going to be remembered for a number of events which haven’t happened yet but there is one thing we can be sure of — it is 100 years since Lions started serving their community in the USA. In Adur, Lions have been active since 1957 giving 60 years of help to the local community as well as international appeals for disasters and other humanitarian need. ‘Adur East Lions’ serve the communities of Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate which means that they fundraise in the area and then donate the proceeds to charitable causes, hold community events such as the Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally and give their time to helping out the community such as the twice-yearly tea socials for seniors who live alone. The next tea social will be held on Saturday 27 May in Southwick Methodist Church Hall. If you know of an elderly person who lives on their own who might appreciate a tea and entertainment free of charge then please get in touch and an invitation will be sent. You may have seen the Lions all around the town centre in Shoreham during the farmers’ market in March; they were rather noticeable as they were sporting very large, bright yellow daffodil hats! Once a year Lions throughout the country support
Marie Curie with their daffodil appeal and spend time collecting for this worthy cause. You may be interested to know that this year the impressive figure of £900 was raised. Doreen Young, the member responsible for the collection, is already looking to next year and aiming for a round figure of £1000. To commemorate the Lions centenary the club recently planted a centennial oak in Buckingham Park and are planning a special event for the summer for which they need your help. If you have any stories or photographs of Lions in the area over the years, since 1957, then please get in touch as there will be an exhibition and celebration of Lions in the local area at the Manor Cottage in Southwick during the month of July. You may be impressed by the array of activities the Lions are involved with but even more impressed when you hear that the club comprises of only 23 members. It would not be possible to do as much as they do without the help of others. They are supported at different times of the year by the Hove and Adur Sea Cadets, the Air Cadets and the Scouts. In addition local people who want to lend a hand have added their details to a list of ‘Friends’ who are kept up-to-date with the activities — both service and social — in case they are able to help out or just want to come and join in. If this is something you would be interested in then do get in touch. To contact the Lions you can ring 08458 337356. Further information is available online – log onto the website www.adureastlions.org.uk, or visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub.

Ingrown Toenails
Whilst there are some nail shapes that are more prone to developing an ingrown toenail, this problem is commonly caused by trauma or poor toenail cutting. An ingrown toenail is determined by a nail that pierces the flesh of the toe. If severe, the toe may become infected and if left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe so the quicker you treat it, the better. People will often try cut a ‘V’ in the nail to try to prevent ingrown toenails but sadly this is a myth. Cutting the nail straight across, avoiding cutting too low down the sides of the nail is the best way to manage your nails. However if you already have an ingrown toenail, see your podiatrist who may be able to treat you with or without surgery (a minor procedure under local anaesthetic). For more information about the treatment for ingrown toenails or any other foot problem, please make an appointment with our podistrists Karen or Gaynor by contacting us on 01273 455080 or email us at email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or visit our website on www.firstfootclinic.co.uk

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES Transform your conservatory in less than a day with our insulated roof panels
C
ONSERVATORIES ARE USUALLY constructed to add extra living space to a home. A lot of people find however, that from mid-November through until about mid-March, their conservatory is just too cold to pleasantly sit in without spending a small fortune on heating it and then from mid-June through until about the end of September, that same space is unbearably hot during the day. So what’s the answer? In 2010 the planning laws were relaxed and in the majority of cases, you can now fit a solid roof to your conservatory without planning permission. This means better insulation, keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and a room that you can use all year round. Green Space Ltd is a family run company. We specialise in transforming conservatories. Our roof panels are lightweight and offer eight times better insulation than a polycarbonate roof. With U-values of 0.29, they will keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature all year round. What’s more, the panels are manufactured to measure off site, so installation generally takes less than a day, and we always aim to ensure that your roof conversion is as non-disruptive as possible. We are the sole supplier of this system in the South, our system is compatible with most conservatories, old and new — plus it comes with a ten year guarantee. Your conservatory that was too cold to eat your breakfast in
the morning, could be lovely and cosy by dinner time. Transform your conservatory in one day — contact us today on 01903 322004 or find us online at www.greenspaceconservatories.co.uk and see what a difference a day makes!
