ITH THE FESTIVAL season on the horizon, Steyning artists and crafts people are preparing for this year’s Art Trail, which features 19 venues from Ashurst to Lancing. More than happy to talk about their work, local artists will be displaying and selling their creations in the relaxed atmosphere of homes, studios and local businesses. Steyning Arts is a co-operative of artists enjoying opportunities to exhibit their work in Steyning and beyond. Along with some familiar names there will be some new artists and new venues. Joining them will be the Steyning Camera Club, the Steyning Museum with a display of sketches and stories and on advertised days Lancing College with an exhibition of sixth form students’ coursework and The Towers Convent School showing their GCSE artwork. Quality jewellery, photography, ceramics and glass, prints and paintings will be there for visitors on the trail to browse at their leisure. There is something for everybody’s pocket from greeting card to canvas, with much of the artwork inspired by the local scenery, illustrating the richness of our beautiful county from downland to shoreline. Artists and organisers of Steyning Arts welcome you to venues that will be open weekends 24th of May to 8th June including Spring Bank Holiday, unless otherwise stated in the brochure. E PREPARED AND stay safe in your home, council leader and fire chief urge West Sussex residents. Would you or someone you know benefit from a home fire safety check? West Sussex County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer are today reminding people that this FREE service could save a life and are encouraging people to sign up for theirs. In her latest blog, Louise calls for people across West Sussex to support her personal campaign to raise awareness, particularly among the county’s elderly and more vulnerable residents, following several recent incidents. “West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service do a terrific job. Nowadays they respond to more emergency calls for road traffic collisions than fires, but there are still regular call outs for fires in the home and it’s a fire that started in a kitchen that I wanted to talk to you about. An elderly resident was in the kitchen when her cardigan caught fire with fire tragic results. She was rushed to hospital to be treated for 44% burns to her upper body; very sadly she died the following day,” Louise writes. “Elderly people often spend a lot of their time in the kitchen with some seeing it as the warmest place in the home, but the naked flame from a gas cooker or a hot ring on an electric cooker can be potentially very dangerous. “That’s why I am campaigning on this issue. If you know of an elderly resident living on their own or indeed have a parent or relative who does please recommend, or better still, arrange a free home fire safety check for them . A conversation around kitchen safety and the right kind of smoke detection could save a life. “ Chief Fire Officer for West Sussex, Sean Ruth, said: “We now do a great deal of work to prevent fires before they start. Working with the public and our partners to help protect some of the older and more vulnerable residents is a big part of that. Social and physical isolation can mean those people who are most at risk from fire may not have such easy access to our services. Those people may need someone to advocate on their behalf. “Our home fire safety checks are free, as are the smoke detectors we fit including the more specialist equipment that is available for those who may have difficulty responding to a standard smoke alarm. We prioritise those who are over 65 and living alone or those with disabilities. The small action of recommending a Home Fire Safety Check from us could help save a life.” • Here are simple steps to a safer home – a useful reminder for us all. • Working smoke alarms save lives! Install one on each level of your home and test them on a weekly basis • Stand by your pan! More than half the fires attended by the fire service start in the kitchen so take extra care when cooking • Smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires. Extinguish cigarettes carefully and never smoke in bed • Unplug appliances when not in use – leaving electrical appliances on overnight or when you are out increases the risk of fire Don’t put anything on heaters or use them to dry clothes. Need advice about paying fuel bills or keeping warm safely? Call Home Heat Helpline FREE on 0800 336699. In the event of a fire in the home get out, stay out and call 999 . Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Retirement options – what has changed? T
HE RECENT BUDGET announced some surprising changes to how you can take your retirement income. These apply to “money purchase” arrangements, the type where you build up a lump sum of money, not for final salary or public sector schemes. For many years there have been several options you could have taken with your fund when you retire. The main ones being the purchase of an annuity or the alternative, income drawdown. I will explain the main features and changes which have occurred.
when it comes to taking their retirement benefits. Some are not dependent on the money, whilst others are. Some have a specific need to take money from their pension fund, whilst others don’t. With this new flexibility it becomes even more important to get the right advice. . Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount invested. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
Annuity
An annuity would give you a guaranteed income for a set term, or more commonly for the rest of your life. The rate is set when you purchase the annuity, with initial income levels being based on criteria such as health and whether you smoke. With this option you are effectively giving away the lump sum you have saved for a guaranteed income which may go on for a long time into the future, or only a few years depending how long you live. Although annuity rates have reduced over time, this is still the preferred option for many people who want the security of know exactly what income they will receive. This continues to be an option when you retire.
Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
Drawdown
If you take income drawdown, instead of giving away your lump sum to purchase an annuity, the money would be invested. Your income would be withdrawn directly from the fund. Drawdown has been available for some time, although for most people the annual income level has been restricted. In the budget, it was announced that people can now take a higher level of income from their plans, and from April 2015 there will be no limit to what can be taken, giving people access to the whole fund. Any withdrawals, however, be taxed as income, which in itself will often limit the amount people will withdraw. There are further changes for people with smaller pension pots allowing them to access the full fund from now. The limits to how much you can take have also been increased. Although the above changes may sound simple, the flexibility introduces more complexity when planning your retirement. Everybody has different circumstances and needs 6

ROGATION I N AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITIES, including Old Shoreham and Southwick, the community would gather together for a Rogation Ceremony, a regular event in many rural parishes, which generally took place in the days after Ascension Day. Rogation originated in the early church as three fast days, being the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Ascension Day with the preceding Sunday, the fifth after Easter being known as Rogation Sunday. Mamertus, bishop of Vienne, is said to have introduced processions with litanies, after earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and plagues devastated his diocese at this time of year, in about AD 467. The name comes from the Latin ‘rogatio’ meaning ‘intercession’ — to ask or beseech. In AD 511 the first Council of Orleans extended the custom to the whole of France and from there the practice quickly spread, reaching England in the early eighth century. Later, in the Church of England, Rogation Day became a time for perambulations around the parish to bless fields, allotments, gardens and even the sea. The old name for Rogation Day is Gang Day from the Anglo-Saxon ‘gangen’, meaning walk. On Rogation Day, a group of villagers, starting out from the church, would walk around the boundaries of the parish, stopping at key points to ensure that the school children present knew where the bounds lay, and would be able to pass this knowledge on to the next generation. The ceremony was also often known as Beating The Bounds, because each time the group stopped, the ground at the boundary would
10
be beaten with bunches of twigs or specially made rods. In some parishes this part of the tradition differed, in that boys of that village were symbolically beaten or bumped at the boundary. The limits of the parish would thus be firmly impressed in the memories of the youngsters. Sometimes children were even thrown into water, dragged through hedges and over walls and made to climb up on to rooftops as part of the tradition. Being given gifts of money or goods later was seen as compensating the youngsters for their ordeal. In Barcombe in 1953, it was recalled that various men still knew exactly where the parish boundaries were, from being bumped on the ground there as children, many years before. After the Reformation, Elizabethan clergy were allowed to continue to beat the bounds and to preach or offer prayers at certain points along the way. So Rogation also became a chance to preserve established parish boundaries at a time when maps were scarce among the general population and the simplest way of remembering where the parish ended was to walk round it once a year. Rogation was an important ceremony in the church year and local vicar and other church officials, as well as the full choir, would be in attendance. In Old Shoreham in the early 20th century, the ceremony often took place in what was then the Lamb Field, a walled paddock on the West side of The Street, beside St. Nicolas Church, which is now built on. The vicar, and the choir would lead the congregation to the field. On the way there from the church the choir sang the litany and on the return walk, they sang the benedicite. Bread, cheese and ale
were served after the ceremony and it became an excuse for the whole village to have a springtime picnic together. The first gooseberries are ripe by the end of May (they are traditionally associated with Whit Sunday) so sometimes pies made of these were served at Rogation events. Rogation and bound beating became intertwined because as boundary marks such as stones, trees or ponds were reached, the vicar paused to give thanks for the fruits of the earth. Some fields that contained these marks still retain names like Gospel Amen and Paternoster today. A Gospel Oak was a tree that acted as a boundary marker and under which the clergyman read from the Gospel. In Shoreham, as well as Brighton and Hastings, services to bless the nets and mackerel catches were held on the beach to give thanks for this natural bounty, in the same way as the rural services thanked God for the produce of the land. Blessings of the boats and nets have survived to the present day in more places than Rogation ceremonies. Perhaps the reason Rogation services have dwindled away is the fact that many rural parishes, like Old Shoreham, have become increasingly developed for housing, and fewer and fewer of their inhabitants earn a living off of the land. At Old Shoreham a well-attended Rogation service was held at the Lamb Field in 1960, at a time when local people were trying unsuccessfully to save it from development. The Southwick Society has revived the beating of the bounds tradition in Southwick for the modern era, and in Littlehampton too, Rogation has been revived. Judy Upton

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN
W
ELL THAT’S EASTER done and dusted and the evenings are drawing out day by day, and getting longer and lighter. In my book summer is well on its way. I think we can safely say we’ve got away with a very mild winter and spring this year and despite the biblical rain of the winter we’ve actually been having another dry spring, so it seems to be balancing out, as nature often does! There is still a slight chance of cold nights or snap frosts, but
12
were pretty much clear of that risk now, so now you can really get going in the garden. There’s a vast array of seeds that can be sown direct into the ground in the vegetable garden. Try to make the most of the space you have. If you are sowing some rows of long growing vegetables, such as carrots, parsnips, cabbages etc, then use the ground in between to plant quick growing ones such as radish, lettuce, salad etc. That way you can get the most out of the area you have. It also helps to keep weeds down, as weeds love bare soil where they can get the light and food, so if there is good coverage, less weeds! If you have got a good start on sowing veggies and flowers in the greenhouse ready to plant out, don’t delay in getting them potted up into bigger pots as soon as they need it, and either top up the compost or use a liquid feed. Also make sure you get rid of any that are not performing or lagging behind the others. They won’t catch up and will only stunt the others. That way you give the best ones the greatest chance of going on to give a good display or a healthy crop. Better to have a few good producing specimens, than lots that are poor performing Anything you do move outside from the greenhouse will want hardening off. This simply means moving it outside during the day to let the tender plants start to harden up and get used to the slightly colder temperature outside. Do it in stages to give it the best chance to acclimatize. If you are growing anything in the greenhouse make sure it has adequate ventilation during the day. If you don’t have the luxury of an opening window, then simply leave the door ajar during the day, but shut it at night. Although Christmas seems a long time ago, we are still getting calls for fences that were damaged during the weather. Due to the unprecedented demand, and problems with timber supply there is now a shortage of many garden fencing products and associated products, which has lead to a market for selling second hand or sub-standard items, so be prepared to be patient or be careful of who you buy from if buying on auction pages and the like. This really is a great time of year in the garden, so make the most of it, even if it’s a few minutes in the evening after work to potter around. It’s a great way of unwinding and relieving stress, so if you don’t normally, give it a go! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065
STAY SAFE
ON THE BEACH Splashing, wading and paddling at the beach, a water park or a lake can be a real treat on a hot day. Swimming is a top activity with all ages and can be lots of fun, especially if the sun’s shining. But drowning is a real danger and even people who know how to swim can get into difficulties if they fail to take safety precautions.
T
HE BRITISH COAST is spectacularly beautiful, rich in wildlife and hugely popular, attracting people from considerable distances to enjoy a range of recreational activities. But the seaside isn’t most people’s usual environment so it’s easy to miss some of the hazards, warns the RNLI. Rip currents and offshore winds can drag you out of your depth while jellyfish, sea anemones and weever fish can leave you with a seaside souvenir you didn’t bargain on. Peter Dawes, RNLI Head of Lifeguards, says: “We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time at the beach. The RNLI’s advice is to choose a lifeguarded beach if possible, and swim between the red and yellow flags. “We also advise people not to use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas — and never when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates an offshore wind that could carry you out to sea. “If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help — and if you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.” The charity, which is funded entirely by donations and run by volunteers, is hugely busy in holiday periods so is asking people to take precautions to cut unnecessary risks. Last year a RNLI lifeboat was sent out to rescue a couple from an inflatable dinghy with no equipment — not even oars; and another rescued two inflatable boats which got into difficulty when
•
• strong offshore winds swept them away from the beach. Other rescues included people who had been cut off by the tide, dinghies taken out to sea by rip currents and a man clinging to one of the legs of a pier.
RNLI top tips to stay safe on the beach
• Wherever possible, always swim at a lifeguarded beach. Go to www.goodbeachguide.co.uk to search for listings. • Always read and obey the safety signs
•
•
to help you avoid potential hazards on the beach and identify the safest swimming areas. When on a lifeguarded beach, find the red and yellow flags and always swim or bodyboard between them — this area is patrolled by lifeguards. If you get into trouble stick your hand in the air and shout for help. If you see someone in difficulty, tell a lifeguard, or, if you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the ‘Coastguard’. If you can’t make it to a lifeguarded beach, find out about your chosen beach at www.goodbeachguide.co.uk Check weather and tides before you go. Don’t use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas — and never when the orange windsock is flying, as this signals an offshore wind which could carry you out to sea.
