How to make the most of your savings
T
he low interest rates over the past few years have been good news for borrowers, but savers have suffered. If you are retired things may have been tough, especially if you are on a set income and reliant on your savings interest. Many people have trawled the market for higher interest rates, but this can often mean tying your money up for a period of time or investing into accounts where there is a limit on the amount you can deposit. As time has gone on, fixed rate investments have matured and further options have become more limited. The traditional places to put your savings such as cash ISAs may not be quite so attractive now you are able to earn, depending on your tax banding tax free interest of up to £1,000 per tax year on traditional savings accounts. This is because you may now find an account with a higher rate and still earn tax free interest. Financial institutions keep merging and with a limit of only £85,000 with each covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), if people have a high amount of savings they can get really stumped as to where to invest their money.
of the two? What is your tax situation? Your investment should be tax efficient and work in combination with other income and investments you may have. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
How do I get a return on my investments?
To get a higher long term growth rate on a proportion of your funds it may be necessary to take a measured level of risk. Risk levels can be tailored to individual requirements; even a low-risk investment has the potential to achieve a higher long term return than cash investments. You could seek the advice of an IFA who can look at the whole market and work out where best to invest your money. Firstly, we would ensure that you have sufficient funds in cash for your needs. These are funds you can access in case of emergencies or shorter term spending needs. Then, we would review any existing investments to see how they have performed, the charges and the risk level. Very importantly, we would assess your attitude to investment risk and capacity for loss. You may be very cautious with your investments, or you may be happy with a medium or more adventurous risk level. What do you want your investment to do for you? Do you want growth or income, or a combination 6

Flight Lieutenant James Nicolson VC
E
RIC JAMES BRINDLEY NICOLSON was born on the 29th of April 1917 in Hampstead, North London. He attended school at Yardley Court Prep School and Tonbridge School in Kent, before in 1935 he began working as an experimental engineer, at Ricardos Engineers at Shoreham-by-Sea. In 1936 he joined the Royal Air Force with the Service No. 39329, beginning his flight training at the de Havilland School of Flying in White Waltham before attending the No. 10. Flying Training School Ternhill. In July 1937 he had Gunnery Training at Sutton Bridge and then on August 7th, 1937 he joined No. 72 Squadron, moving in 1940 to 249 Squadron. On the 16th August 1940, Lieutenant Nicolson, with No. 249 Squadron having taken off from Boscombe Down. Attacked by Messerschmitt 110s, his aircraft caught fire and he was injured as four cannon shells entered the cockpit itself, being wounded in an eye and a foot as well as sustaining burns from the fire. Lietenant Nicolson was about to bail out from the plane, when he saw a Messerschmitt 110 flying directly beneath his aircraft. Climbing back into his bucket seat, Nicolson shot the enemy aircraft down, before successfully bailing out of his Hurricane. When he landed in a field near Romsey in Hampshire, he was unable to release himself from his parachute because of his badly burned hands. He was taken to the RAF Hospital in Halton and was recovering at the RAF Convalescent Facility, Torquay; when he discovered he had been awarded the Victoria Cross. The uniform Lieutenant Nicolson was wearing on August 16th 1940 is now in Tangmere Aviation Museum. His Victoria Cross is also on public display, at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon. Initially Lieutenant Nicolson had only been recommended for a Distinguished Flying Cross but the King had noted that while four bomber pilots had received the VC, no Fighter Command pilot had been awarded the medal. Lieutenant Nicolson remained the only Fighter Command pilot to receive a VC during the Second World War. His citation reads: "During an engagement with the enemy near Southampton on i6th August, 1940, Flight Lieutenant Nicolson's aircraft was hit by four cannon shells, two of which wounded him whilst another set fire to the gravity tank. When about to abandon his
aircraft owing to flames in the cockpit he sighted an enemy fighter. This he attacked and shot down, although as a result of staying in his burning aircraft he sustained serious burns to his hands, face, neck and legs. Flight Lieutenant Nicolson has always displayed great enthusiasm for air fighting and this incident shows that he possesses courage and determination of a high order. By continuing to engage the enemy after he had been wounded and his aircraft set on fire, he displayed exceptional gallantry and disregard for the safety of his own life." Lieutenant Nicolson's parents moved to 42 Buckingham Road, Shoreham in 1940 and, although his father died in 1943, James and his wife, Muriel, often stayed at the house. Lieutenant Nicolson made a good recovery from his injuries and continued his war service with the RAF in India and Burma, where in 1943 he was made Commanding Officer of No. 27 Squadron, before a year later becoming Wing Commander of the 3rd Tactical Force in Bengal (India). Sadly Wing Commander Nicolson did not survive the war. On the 2nd May 1945 he was an observer in a B24 plane that took off from an airfield in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Two of its four engines failed and the plane crashed into the sea. He was 28. A Hurricane fighter plane flew over Nicolson Drive, Shoreham, on Saturday 14th July 2004 marking the official unveiling of the Nicolson VC RAF Clock, which is situated on the roof of a house on the corner of Buckingham Road and Nicolson Drive, the road which is named after Nicolson. On the same day a plaque — donated by the Shoreham Society was unveiled on Wing Commander Nicolson's parents' home in Buckingham Road. Judy Upton

Spring into life W
ELL WE ARE coming into May and by and large we have been fairly lucky with the weather so far, in terms of temperatures and not a great deal of rain. Easter is now behind us so we are really into the run in to summer, let’s hope it’s a good one for a change! I love this time of year as things seem to change in the garden so quickly and unlike the early days of spring when colour is
limited there seems to be so much, with something replacing something dying back, that you hardly notice. Most of the spring flowers have had their time and need to be sorted in order to get the most from them for next year. Let tulips die back, but as they do give them a good feed. It’s always a good thing to do with any plant that grows from a bulb. The bulb is basically a store of energy and it pulls it down ready for next year. Give it a boost and it will ensure that the bulb has enough energy to give a decent flower next year. That’s often the reason you see so many bulbs with lots of greenery but no flowers. By now the planting in the vegetable garden should be well under way, with many of the seeds such as carrots, spring onions, Swedes and beetroot can be sown. You can also get underway with many of the tender leaf plants such as lettuces and other salad leaves. These are quick growing and can be grown between the slower growing crops such as the carrots and cabbages. If you are growing seedlings in the greenhouse then you need to start thinning them out. There is always a temptation to leave as many as possible. The problem with this is it will lead to a lot of small weak plants, as they fight for light water and food. If you thin them out you will get less plants, but they will be much stronger and healthier and produce better results, regardless of whether they are flowers or vegetables. In fact, the same holds with plants in any situation. The more cramped they are in beds or pots the less you will get out of them. The phrase less is more, was never truer. As well as keeping on top of the weeds in the garden, which will romp away and take over if you leave them to it, its worth keeping an eye on plants that need extra support. Whether you use bamboo canes or metal frames bought from the garden centre is a lot easier to get them in place now, rather than when the plants are to tall, or have already been wrecked by the wind. That pretty much sums up the way to approach May in the garden, as a month where its better to get things done now rather than putting it off, as the garden will leave you behind if you are not careful, so keep the tasks small and simple and keep one step ahead. Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Small claims, small costs As the national press has shown repeatedly, we are never too far away from the next financial scandal, from payment protection insurance mis-selling, through to defective vehicles and home appliances. Paul Tilley, Consumer Credit Expert at QualitySolicitors explains how he and his team can help. CCESS TO THE Court system is a fundamental right which should be available to all consumers. Unfortunately, as a result of the Legal Aid Sentencing & Punishment of Offenders Act 2012, as well as government reforms increasing the small claims track threshold from £5,000 to £10,000, securing access to the Courts and therefore access to justice, is becoming increasingly more difficult for the average consumer. It is clear that consumers will always need to be able to access the Courts to get the appropriate level of redress that they are entitled to. However, with the increase in the small claims track
threshold, most consumer claims under £10,000 will fall into the small claims track. As a consequence of this, the general rule in the small claims track is that the successful party does not recover their legal costs so the difficulty the consumer faces is that whilst he may be able to appoint a Solicitor to represent him, there are no guarantees that the Solicitor’s fees will be paid by the other side. Conversely, the company responsible for the mis-selling of the financial product or the defective goods and services will generally be well-resourced. Most financial institutions wouldn’t think twice at spending a few thousand pounds on a Solicitor to represent them even in the small claims Court. Therefore the consumer faces a difficulty whereby to obtain access to justice, in our view, they are placed on an extremely tilted playing field, one where they could spend considerable sums of money in appointing a Solicitor but one also where there are no guarantees the costs will be recovered. The same also applies to consumers who defend claims from, for example, financial institutions, where defective products have been sold and the consumer refuses to pay. Fundamentally the consumer is entitled to have their day in Court and to have their case heard. Unfortunately most of the consumer credit claims that we deal with in the Consumer Credit Litigation Department at QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke are extremely complex, therefore the consumer faces a

A
dilemma. They are already out of pocket as a result of defective goods or defective services, and are now faced with a claim from the company pursuing the outstanding sums so the options available to the consumer are very limited, especially if they are unable to recover their legal costs. There is little point in them spending £5,000 on legal fees to defend a claim for £4,000 but equally they should not have to pay if the law provides them with a right to a remedy.
How then can I and my colleagues at QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke help you?
Having faced a number of claims where funding has become increasingly difficult, we have decided to offer a fixed fee service for small claims cases. We consider the fees that we have put forward are competitive and will allow consumers to obtain bespoke legal advice on their position, to be represented at Trial if they so require and, most importantly, will ensure that the consumer is placed on a level playing field against the bigger institutions. What is the point of having rules which offer consumers a remedy if those rules are so far out of the consumer’s reach that they simply cannot rely upon them? We do appreciate that some cases will not be suitable for fixed fees, but we are more than happy here at QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke to discuss the individual consumer’s needs and we are confident that we are able to put forward a funding option to meet all consumer cases. What are the most common injuries?
Don't put your back into it This month, So it’s that time of year again, when suddenly the lawn seems overgrown and out of control. Time to get the lawn mower out and the garden sheers. This month Louis Jones talks about common injuries associated with gardening and how to avoid them.
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

1. Lower Back – With all that bending, lifting and twisting required to pick up plants, heavy bags of soil and carrying a wheel barrow, not to mention bending over to pot plants, cutting the hedge, tidying up the edges of the lawn, its little wonder we get problems with our backs. There is an increased pressure on the vertebral discs when doing bending and lifting activities and care should be taken to avoid injury. 2. Knees – Garden Activities such as kneeling, and constant squatting movements, puts our knees under a lot of strain. “Housemaids knee” or patellar bursitis is a common condition associated with kneeling activities. 3. Wrists – Small repetitive, gripping and twisting movements with pruners, garden sheers etc. puts our wrists in a vulnerable position to pick up tendon injuries of the wrists and hands. 4. Shoulders and Necks – Reaching activities overhead, such as strimming hedges, picking fruit from branches and clipping back tall plants, can put the neck and shoulders under stress. Rotator cuff injuries and shoulder impingement is another common injury linked to overhead movements of the arms and looking up.
How can we avoid these problems?
• Firstly we can avoid injuring our lower backs and causing damage to the discs and muscles by learning to bend properly and safely. To bend correctly, we should maintain a straight/neutral lower back, and bend from our hips and knees only. • Make sure to assess how heavy and object is before attempting to lift it. If it’s very heavy can the load be broken down into smaller more manageable loads, or can the activity be shared between 2 people rather than performed on your own? • If you are on your own, can you make more frequent, lighter trips when carrying or lifting? • A soft pad such as a cushion should be used if kneeling is required, in order to alleviate pressure on the knees. • You should never sit back onto your heels, which forces the knees into extreme flexion. Try kneeling upright or placing a second cushion between the heels and your bottom. • Elbow and wrist straps may be needed if you suffer from repetitive strain type injuries from gripping and cutting activities, or in order to avoid them. • Try to avoid lots of repetitive reaching activities by using a step ladder, if it is safe to do so, for example there is a flat stable surface, and your step ladder is secure. • One other point worth noting is protective goggles may be necessary to protect the eyes, when using garden machinery. Remember to take precautions and be safe. For the purpose of this article I have not mentioned the dangers of using machinery, but it is assumed that proper steps are taken and risks are assessed adequately. Enjoy the up coming summer season. If there are any issues related to this article or if you have any questions related to any injuries you may have, please feel free to email me at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk or telephone me on 01273 467614. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
S
T BARNABAS HOUSE hospice is preparing for its biggest ever Night to Remember midnight walk to celebrate 10 years of this successful event. Taking place on Saturday 24 June, the 10th popular moonlit fundraising event will see over 1,000 ladies setting off at midnight on a walk along Worthing seafront to raise vital funds for their local hospice. Since the first walk in 2008, Night to Remember has gone from strength to strength and last year’s event raised an incredible £135,000 for the St Barnabas House Hospice at Home night service. Over the past nine years, over 9,000 ladies have taken to the streets of Worthing and have collectively raised over £1.3 million for the hospice. As it is the tenth time the hospice has held the walk, there will be some very special additions to ensure that it truly is a ‘Night to Remember’. This year the ladies are being asked to ‘light up the night’ and cover themselves in fairy lights and glow products to light up Worthing seafront. The hospice is also delighted to announce that this year the route will take the ladies on to Worthing pier, with all three routes incorporating the pier for the first time! There will also be more exciting surprises to follow on the night. As usual, the walkers will gather from 10pm at Worthing Leisure Centre where there will be entertainment including music and live updates, the usual pre-walk warm up, photography, face painting and a tombola. Once they are all warmed up and ready to go by Jo Clarke, walkers will set off into the night, lit up by their luminous outfits. As in previous years, there will be a choice of 7 and 13.1 mile routes, plus the 20 mile
route which will take the walkers as far as Shoreham, the outer edge of the hospice’s catchment area. Many of the hospice’s patients prefer to stay in the comfort of their own homes. This is when the Hospice at Home services proves invaluable, especially during the difficult night hours while the ladies participating in Night to Remember walk, the St Barnabas Hospice at Home Team will be providing support to patients and their families throughout the night. To register visit: www.nighttoremember.org.uk/stb. Registration closes on Monday 12 June. St Barnabas House is in need of an army of volunteers to help make the event successful. They need over 250 volunteers between the hours of 9pm Saturday 24th June and 8am Sunday 25th June to help with marshalling the route, handing out refreshments, issuing medals and registration. If you’ve got what it takes to motivate the wonderful walkers please sign up at www.nighttoremember.org.uk/stb/event/volunteer/.

KEEP COOL IN YOUR CONSERVATORY THIS SUMMER
T
HINK BACK TO last summer. How many of you were looking forward to spending the summer sitting in your conservatory, making the most of the lovely room that overlooks the garden, only to find that sitting in your conservatory, was more like sitting in a sauna? Last summer, we were exceptionally spoilt with the weather with long hot sunny days that would give a trip to the ‘med’ a run for it’s money — however even without those soaring temperatures, as soon as the sun comes out, for many of us, our conservatories morph themselves into mini ovens which make them unbearable to sit in. Okay there are lots of different ways to keep cool in the summer. Blinds are often fitted as an initial solution to the problem and whilst they will keep the glare of the sun out, blinds do not make your room cooler. In fact, they become a magnet for dust, dead flies and other insects that are drawn to the light and then trapped between the blinds and the roof. A very simple solution of course would be to put a fan in your conservatory — but possibly not a good long term solution and to be fair, this only works if you are sat right next to the fan to feel the benefit! We’ve heard lots of people tell us of all kinds of ways they’ve tried to keep cool in their conservatory over the summer from reducing the amount of clothes they are wearing (only really appropriate if you are not expecting guests!), through to sitting with their feet in an inflatable paddling pool (note, this could get messy!!).
So what’s the solution? In 2010 the planning laws were relaxed and in the majority of cases, you can now fit a solid roof to your conservatory without planning permission. This means better insulation, keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and a room that you can use all year round. Here at Green Space, we specialise in replacing conservatory roofs with roof panels that are lightweight and offer eight times better insulation than a polycarbonate roof. With U-values of 0.29, they will keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature all year round meaning that even at the height of summer, you will be able to sit in your conservatory without having to resort to stripping off or sitting on top of a fan! What’s more, the panels are manufactured to measure off site, so installation generally takes less than a day, and we always aim to ensure that your roof conversion is as non-disruptive as possible. We are the sole supplier of this system in the South, our system is compatible with most conservatories, old and new plus it comes with a ten year guarantee. Your conservatory that was too cold to eat your breakfast in the morning, could be lovely and cosy by dinner time. Transform your conservatory in one day — contact us today on 01903322004 or find us online at www.greenspaceconservatories.co.uk and see what a difference a day makes!

Are you addicted to sugar?
A5 Keyboard Lessons Q9_Bobby 21/04/2014 11:25 Page 1
When we eat refined sugar it passes quickly into our bloodstream. Blood sugar levels skyrocket and we experience a lift in energy. Sugar makes us feel good, it releases the brain chemical serotonin which lifts our mood and when that feeling passes we crave more. But that feeling is temporary — sugar highs lead to sugar crashes, food cravings, “brain-fog”, bloating and energy slumps. Too much sugar in our diet can cause irritability, headaches, mood swings and insomnia. It weakens the immune system and overconsumption can cause long-term problems such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and cancer. But how do you know how much sugar you actually consume? A muesli bar can contain more sugar than a block of chocolate. Low fat yogurt more than ice-cream! Check out the ingredients list on prepared foods and you might be surprised how much sugar is in them. If you don't see sugar listed look out for anything ending in “-ose”: fructose, dextrose, sucrose, maltose etc — they are all sugar. Not all sweet foods are bad for us. Nature wanted us to be attracted to the goodness available in naturally sweet foods but the process of refining removes the accompanying nutrients and fibre from the original plant material. If you know what to eat and drink, stock your fridge and cupboards with the right food for you and work out a plan of action it is possible to break the sugar habit and take control of your diet. The benefits will be both immediate and long-term and you will thank yourself for it. For help devising a personal diet plan to break your sugar addiction call Kate Fisher on 07535 634131 or visit www.choicesweightloss.co.uk
