Singing for Pleasure

Bushcraft Days near Horsham for Children

S

inging for Pleasure has been running successfully in Hove, will be opening up a centre in Southwick in June under the direction of a very experienced musical director, Simon Gray, who has been involved in the musical theatre scene as well as many other musical assignments, concerts, opera and top shows for over 30 years. Singing is now widely recognised as producing a whole host of health benefits and it could be argued that singing should more broadly be part of everyday life. Singing, through the emotional experience of one’s feelings, has the power to alter and enhance the mood of the singer. Since ancient times singing has been considered a great healing tool as it can influence brain wave frequencies and promote well being. It can lower blood pressure as well as boost the immune system and, of course, no-one can argue with how singing with others promotes communal bonding. So all in all there are many compelling reasons to loosen up the vocal chords and get singing! Singing for Pleasure has now arrived in Southwick and offers you the opportunity to sing until your heart is content. There are no auditions, song sheets are provided and there is no need to be able to read music. Song choices are taken from musical theatre shows, some classical songs as well as some of the great standards. We also welcome song suggestions from the group members. Throughout the year there will be Singing for Pleasure fund raising events in support of the Martlets Hospice. Sessions in Southwick will be held on Wednesday afternoons 2.30pm – 3.30pm at the Methodist Church Hall, Southwick Street. Come along with your friends on Wednesday 13th June for a taster session – only £1.00! Please phone Robert or Corinne on 01273 555089 to register your interest but call soon to avoid disappointment!

The Probus Club Retirement can come too early for many people who want and are able to remain active. Probus clubs are organisations for men and women who have retired from their profession or business and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Probus clubs were first formed, as an acronym for Pro(fessional) and Bus(iness), in the early 1920's in Saskatchewan, CANADA, and in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. The name was fused into a different type of club in England, and the first non-sectarian Probus club specifically for active retirees was formed in 1966 to allow retired professionals to continue to meet together for fellowship. Shoreham & Southwick Probus club was formed some 18 years ago and meets monthly for lunch at the Amsterdam in Shoreham. The meal is often followed by a talk from a guest speaker and there are occaisional arranged outings. The Club is looking for new members and if you are interested please contact Ken Tompsett on 01273 452967 or Cornelius on 01273 870282 4

Inspiring healthier lives Adur and Worthing councils are pleased to announce the launch of a new programme designed to help families, which include a child who is over the recommended weight for his/her age and/or height, to make healthier lifestyle choices. Pioneered during 2011 by Inspire Leisure in Arun and supported by NHS Sussex the programme offers each family ten free individual one-hour appointments with a Wellbeing Leader, who will provide advice on nutrition, physical activity and cooking. The content of the sessions will be dictated by the needs of the family so each programme will be personalised. Subject to availability the time and location of the sessions will also be tailored to the family’s situation. The advantage of this scheme is that unlike some other programmes families are not tied to specific days or times of the week and they will be receiving one-to-one support. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Your mortgage rate has ended – what next? I

f you are coming to the end of a fixed or tracker rate period, your rate will normally revert to your lender’s standard variable rate. Depending which lender you are with you could find that your payment goes up. Some lenders have recently increased their variable rates even though Bank of England have kept the base rate the same, 0.5% for over three years. At the time that your rate ends, your lender will almost certainly write to you offering a new rate. Many deals involve a fee for transferring your mortgage product, so the service is not usually free. There are limitations to arranging your mortgage directly with a lender. Most cannot advise which of their range would suit you best. Should you take a fixed or variable? Which works out best for your particular loan amount? These are all things that need to be considered. It is a difficult decision to make when your lender doesn’t give advice. More than ever, it is so important to check out other lenders’ rates. Many people don’t bother looking and end up paying a much higher rate than they need to. Why not seek out the best rate you can get? Just because your lender had the best rate when you took your mortgage doesn’t mean that will necessarily be the case now.

If you think that you will charged high fees to change – think again. Often the fees for moving are similar or less than staying where you are. If you think that you will charged high fees to change – think again. Often the fees for moving are similar or less than staying where you are. Remember, other lenders are trying to tempt you across and many offer a free valuation of your property and cover any legal costs involved. This keeps the cost of remortgaging low. The best way to find the right deal, and the most competitive taking everything into account is to speak to an Independent Financial Adviser. Not only can they search the whole of market for you, they can find rates which suit your own personal circumstances For example, if you have savings, an offset mortgage could suit you. Any money in your offset account would save you interest on your mortgage, often meaning that your mortgage term will be reduced, this could save you a substantial amount 6

of money over the term. If you are thinking of moving at some point soon, you may need a rate with no penalties, or one which you can transfer across without penalty to a new property. A small mortgage would suit a rate with very low fees, or no fees at all. If you have a large mortgage, then you could save substantially by taking a lower rate and paying a higher fee. All of this can be assessed for you. By staying with your current lender you could be seriously restricting your options. If you need advice on remortgaging or any area of finance, for a free initial consultation please give me Claire Cook a call on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. If you prefer to pay a fee for advice this option is available, the exact amount of the fee will depend on circumstances but we estimate it will be 0.5% of the loan amount. Where a rate is quoted the rate will depend on individual circumstances and not all borrowers will qualify for acceptance of the loan (or similar).Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

The Summer Garden W

ell it’s not been the best of times in the garden over the last couple of months, what with the high rainfall throughout April and May, and the below average temperatures in May. As I write this though we seem to be heading into a warmer spell, so hopefully that will be a sign of things to come, which will give a real boost to the garden. One of the problems with the temperature being lower is that it has meant that many plants and seedlings have been slower to get going, but a combination of the damp ground, rising temperatures and long hours of sunlight as we had towards the longest day, means everything should be about to rocket into growth and bloom. That’s great news for the garden and although now is the time to enjoy many of the displays of the plants, it’s important to keep them all in order. In the flower garden, climbers will be starting to find their way up walls and trellis. Try to keep them in order and place there shoots and tendrils, exactly where you want them to create a better shape. Whilst we are on the subject of climbers, if you have gone to the expense of buying one, then make sure you give it something to climb up. Although plants such as ivy can cling to walls with their suckers, many others such as clematis need something to grip onto as they send out tiny tendrils to wrap around the support. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I go into a garden 8

with a climber propped up against a wall, with its small stick put in it by the nursery, which has gone absolutely nowhere as it has nothing to climb up. In fact with any plant you buy, think about how it grows and what it will want to do and help it along its way. Also make a point of putting stakes in to support any tall plants, whether they are plants or vegetables, it will help protect them from the ravages of the wind. In the vegetable garden we are getting to the point where it’s a rush to get seeds in to get a crop this year. Keep planting seeds in small batches so that you get a succession of harvests, rather than one big glut. Crops such as salads are better sown little and often as they will quickly outgrow being edible. You should by now have many of your younger plants planted out. Make sure you keep them watered, and keep an eye on weeds. A quick 10 minutes of hoeing or picking out the weeds between the rows will help to produce stronger plants and better crops. If you’ve planted strawberries then you should be enjoying them by now. Keep picking them as often as possible to extend the season. In fact it’s the same with most vegetables. All the plant wants to do is produce seeds, so the more you pick a crop on a regular basis, the more it will produce. I think the key message from this month, is try to think a little about the plant you are dealing with and how to get the best out of it. In many cases it

takes only a little effort to do so, but the rewards can be very satisfying, which is after all the whole point of this wonderful hobby. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Neighbourhood Policing Protecting your property In recent weeks we have experienced a number of breaks into sheds and garages. Please follow the advice below and help yourself not to become the next victim.

Property Check what you keep in the shed. • Does your insurance cover the shed and garage and all the equipment you store there? • Is everything post-coded so that you could identify it if it was stolen? Most items can be post-coded by a variety of methods (etching, branding, paint stencilling etc) and easily identifiable items will make them more difficult for a thief to dispose of and therefore less likely to take in the first place. • Do you have a note of serial numbers? Have you photographed any valuable items and put the photos somewhere safe? • Do you secure property within the shed? So that even if someone did break into it, they would not just be able to walk off with all your valuable items? Chain cycles, mowers, ladders and tools to a strong anchor point such as metal rings fixed in concrete to the floor — use a close shackle padlock. • As sheds are not designed for safe storage, would it be better to have a strong lockable box or cage inside your shed — preferably fixed to the floor? • Ask your neighbours to keep their eye on your shed as well as the house and do the same for them in return. If you’ve hidden your shed so it can’t be seen, cut down some foliage so you’re not providing cover for a thief. • When you’ve made your garden, shed or any outbuildings more secure, remember to lock things away every time. It only takes a minute to pick something up and walk off, so don’t be tempted to leave everything out while you go inside for a cup of tea. And NEVER leave cycles unlocked.

Sheds and outbuildings

Without realising it, you probably have a lot of valuable property in your sheds and outbuildings and you don’t pay as much attention to security as you should. Power tools, lawnmowers, cycles, golf clubs etc are all expensive to replace and attractive to thieves. • Has your shed survived the winter without damage which could help a thief gain access? If not, don’t delay – FIX it now! • Are your doors secure? Shed doors are notoriously easy to get into so strengthen the door and frame if you can. Outside door hinges should be secured with coach bolts or non-return screws. Use strong pad bars and close shackle padlocks. Up and over garage doors can be secured by putting padlocks through the inside runners or by fitting padlocks with a hasp and staple on either side of the door. There are other effective devices available which stop the door being lifted. 5 lever mortise locks are the best on normal solid doors. • Are windows secure? Is the glass cracked but you haven’t got round to replacing it? You could use Perspex or polycarbonate sheet if well fixed. Use a window lock on opening windows and a strong grille or heavy wire mesh. Consider using net curtains to deter casual viewing. • Use an alarm – battery operated alarms may act as a deterrent. If you have a house alarm, you could have it upgraded to include your shed or garage. If the garage is an integral part of your house, make sure the alarm conforms to BS 4737. • If the garage is linked to your house, is the connecting door as well protected as the main door? If not, upgrade the door security now!

'The Roadmender'

B

efore World War II, the Adur Valley between Horsham and Shoreham was often described as ‘Roadmender Country’ on account of it being the setting of an extraordinary book. ‘The Roadmender’ written in 1901, was by Michael Fairless, in reality the pseudonym of a young female author Margaret Fairless Barber. At this time, writing was still seen as more of a man’s profession and like many female writers before her, Margaret chose to obscure her identity. The book is a beautifully written account of a man whose job it is to break stones and repair the road surface in the days before tarmac. It presents the reality of hard manual labour, the beauty of his rural surroundings, his observations on local life and his faith in God. It was written at Mock Bridge House at Shermanbury. Margaret Fairless Barber was terminally ill at the time and wrote the book in the last two years of her life. ‘The Roadmender’ describes a series of encounters and conversations with various people who meet the road mender as they pass by, as well as the man’s memories of his own travels and reflections on the world around him. The road itself is a significant aspect of the book, representing the journey we all make through life. Some of Margaret Fairless Barber’s lovingly evoked scenes can still be seen locally today. ‘The seagulls from the upper reaches pass down the river in sober steady flight seeking the open sea. I shall miss the swoop and circle of silver wings in the sunlight and the plaintive call which sounds so strangely away from rock and shore, but it is good to know that they have gone from mudbank and murky town back to the free airs of their inheritance…’ Others passages such as one that describes the river Adur as ‘heavy with hay barges’ are from a world now long gone. Margaret Fairless Barber’s love of nature shines through in many charming paragraphs though. ‘A hedgehog crossed my path with a dull squeak, the bats shrilled high in the stars, a white owl swept past me crying his hunting note, a beetle boomed suddenly in my face; and above and through it all the nightingales sang – and sang!’ She also displays concern

12

and compassion for farm animals as when she mentions the bullocks on their way to market; ‘They are not patient, but go most unwillingly with lowered head and furtive sideways motion, in their eyes a horror of great fear’. Among the beautiful descriptions of life in rural West Sussex, the book also deals with the harsh realities of the workhouse and lives of the unemployed who were forced to tramp ‘dogged and footsore’ between them. One man tells the road mender of ‘a two hundred miles tramp since early spring, of search for work, casual jobs with more kicks than halfpence, and a brief but blissful sojourn in a hospital bed, from which he was dismissed with sentence passed upon him.’ The settings might be picturesque but the author was under now illusions about how tough and backbreaking life was for rural poor such as farm labourers. It is also clear from the book that Margaret Fairless Barber had a deep mistrust of the industrialization and mechanization that she was beginning to see in her lifetime. Her road mender was the symbol of the simple manual worker who labours for the benefit of others, in a world that is beginning to change. On her death in 1901, the body of Margaret Fairless Barber was taken by barge down the Adur to Ashurst churchyard. At this time her book was unpublished and few but her close friends knew she had been writing it. Her grave is marked by a wooden cross inscribed with the words, ‘Lo how I loved thee.’ ‘The Roadmender’ was published a year after is author’s death and immediately gained huge popularity, nationwide. It was reprinted ten times within two years of its first publication in February 1902. New editions continued to appear for over twenty years, including illustrated ones that further increased the interest among tourists and travellers to visit the picturesque Adur Valley. Southern Railway published a book about ‘The Roadmender’ with descriptions of local villages and pathways and how they could be reached from the various stations on the old Steyning railway line. Today, over a century later, there may not be many tourists visiting the Adur Valley due to ‘The Roadmender’ but the area’s natural beauty is still admired and treasured as it was by the book’s author. T

he Southwick Players are proud to put on Thoroughly Modern Millie by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan. This zany, high-spirited, 1920's award winning musical romp will have you doing the Charleston all the way home! Small town girl Millie Dillmount moves to New York in search of a rich husband. She checks in to the Priscilla Hotel, run by the grotesque Mrs Meers, sheds her country girl image for the modern 'flapper' look and finds a job working as a stenographer for the wealthy and very handsome Trevor Graydon. However, the path of true love never runs straight.... So join us for a fun filled ride back to the roaring twenties, to New York - a city full of intrigue and jazz at a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever. Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a monstrous villainess you will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is an all singing, all dancing romance not to be missed. Director Sharon Watts says "I loved this show when I first saw it in London several years ago and knew then that it was something I would love to direct. The exciting choreography and catchy tunes are infectious and I leave each rehearsal with a big smile on my face. I can't wait to see it on the stage." Performances at The Barn Theatre, Southwick, from Tuesday 17th – Saturday 21st July 2012, starting at 7.30pm (Saturday matinee, 2.30pm). Adur Festival 2012 B

ack in June 1987, the very first festival comprised of a few events and entertainment arranged by local artists in Southwick, Shoreham and Lancing. However it quickly grew into the much-loved festival spanning the first fortnight in June. Adur comes alive with arts, performances, gigs, exhibitions, workshops, taster sessions, walks, concerts and many other events right across the district. Adur Festival is far more than just an ‘Arts’ festival now, as over the years many annual events have found their home under the Adur Festival umbrella: World Oceans Day, Adur Art Friday June 1st

Trail, Beach Dreams, Donkey Derby, Adur Indoor Bowling Club, Sompting Festival and the Lancing Carnival. To mark 25 years of the Adur Festival, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, 2 marquees full of events will launch this year’s celebrations. The marquees, which will be erected on Beach Green Shoreham and Beach Green Lancing, have an exciting line-up of things to do including a Tea Dance with local musician Herbie Flowers, an indoor market, a family fun day, The Beach Boogie and BBQ, not forgetting the launch night event in Shoreham - ABBA Sensation. The festival really does have something for everyone, the young and the young at heart. So why not use this to get some dates in your social calendar during the first two weeks of June? And we’ll see you there!
