OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT TO ENHANCING PATIENT CARE
A leading Government official praised Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust staff for their dedication to improving patient care during a tour of Worthing Hospital in May. Health minister, Lord Prior, asked to visit the trust following its Outstanding CQC rating and confirmation last month as one of the very best performing acute trusts in the country. The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for NHS Productivity and former head of the Care Quality Commission also wished to learn more about the trust’s leading approach to continually improving services for patients. During the visit he observed an Improvement Huddle on Botolphs stroke ward. The daily meetings, which give staff an opportunity to raise issues and work through solutions with colleagues, are just one example of the trust’s comprehensive programme to make sure patient care is always getting better.
Lord Prior said: “It is an overall commitment to continuous quality improvement that marks out the very best and I am sure that is why Western Sussex is Outstanding.” On 20 April, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust became only the third acute trust in the country to achieve an Outstanding rating from the CQC. Lord Prior congratulated staff on the outstanding care they provide and commended the organisation for fostering a culture of inclusivity which directly impacts on the quality that patients experience. He said: “If you were to look at one statistic which determines patient outcomes and whether a hospital is outstanding or not it would be the level of staff engagement. “I think there is a very non-hierarchical feel about this organisation — it is very relaxed and staff feel they will be listened to and respected and that is fundamental to a great organisation.”

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
How much Life cover do you need?
I
T’S A SUBJECT most of us don’t like to think about. What if we died? What if we weren’t around? How would this affect our families and loved ones? Not only would people be impacted emotionally, but how would they cope financially? Of course, it wouldn’t be the first thing on their mind, but leaving your family secure in their home and with no work pressure would certainly help, whatever anyone says! It is quite rare that people have the right amount of cover to achieve this. So, what is the right level of cover? Firstly think about having enough cover to pay any outstanding debts, such as mortgages, credit cards and loans. A simple life policy can cover this, and it is often surprisingly affordable. Then, you could think about the outgoings that need to be covered, utility bills, food, running a car and possible childcare costs. Literally take you and your income out of the equation and see what would need to be paid. A calculation often used is 10 times the annual amount, but if you have a large family to support or young children this could be increased to 15 or 20 times.
"… think about having enough cover to pay any outstanding debts, such as mortgages, credit cards and loans. A simple life policy can cover this, and it is often surprisingly affordable." How do the plans work? The plans pay out a lump sum in the event of your death during an agreed term. The most simple type of policy is Term Assurance which gives you a level amount of cover for a number of years. You decide the cover level and term when the plan starts. You can cover just yourself or take the policy in joint names to cover both you and your partner. Another version is Decreasing Term or Mortgage Protection assurance which is less costly as the cover level reduces during the term in line with what you owe on your mortgage. There are other types of policies which are more flexible and can be arranged depending on your circumstances and needs; for example to cover an inheritance tax bill. How much does it cost? The cost of the cover depends on many factors, but mainly your age and your health. Nowadays there is no gender difference, EU regulations mean that men 6
and women pay the same rates. The older you are the higher the premiums are likely to be as the risk to the life company potentially increases, also if you have had health issues this may adversely affect the cost. Affordability is always a factor when working out the level of cover, it is wise to get quotes for varying amounts and terms to see what suits best. An element of compromise can normally be built into any planning involved. You may be thinking “that all sounds good but it’s a bit of a minefield” but please feel free to call me! I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. Please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. Alfred Edward Woodley Mason
A
LFRED MASON WAS an English author and politician. He is best remembered for his 1902 novel of courage and cowardice in wartime, ’The Four Feathers’ but it is his novel, film and play ‘Witness For The Defence’ which has scenes that take place in and around a thatched cottage in Shoreham-by-Sea. Mason is also known as the creator of Inspector Hanaud, a French detective who was an early template for Agatha Christie's famous Hercule Poirot. Alfred Edward Woodley Mason was born on the 7th of May 1865 in Camberwell, South London. His prolific output of short stories and novels were frequently made and remade into films during his lifetime; though many of the silent versions have been lost or forgotten, the Korda productions of ‘Fire Over England’ (1937) and ‘The Four Feathers’ (1939) remain enduring classics of British cinema. The lavish costume drama ‘Fire Over England’ made stars of Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier in their first pairing as lovers onscreen, as they were off-screen, and a 2002 remake of ‘The Four Feathers’ starred Heath Ledger and Kate Hudson. Alfred Mason studied at Dulwich College, South London and graduated from Oxford in 1888 and was an actor before he became a writer. He was also a cricketer. His first novel, ‘A Romance of Wastdale’, was published in 1895. He was the author of more than 20 books, including ‘At The Villa Rose’ (1910), a mystery novel in which he introduced his French detective, Inspector Hanaud. Hanaud's career in six novels spanned from before World War I to after World War II. Mason’s best-known book is ‘The Four Feathers’, which has been made into several films. Many consider it his masterpiece. ‘The Witness for the Defence’ a play in four acts, opened on the 1st of February 1911, starring Sir George Alexander as Henry Thresk. It was adapted by Mason into a novel in 1913, then made into an American silent film ‘The Witness for the Defense’ directed by George Fitzmaurice. The plot involves ‘the witness for the

defence’, a barrister who perjures himself and saves a woman (whose love he had won seven years before and sacrificed for personal ambition) from conviction of the shooting of her abusive husband. He loses track of her for some time, rediscovering her in India, but then finds that he must renounce her again, unwillingly this time, as her love has been given to the man who has married her secretly. In ‘A Witness For The Defence’, Stella, the heroine, lives in Little Beeding, which is a thinly disguised Old Shoreham. ‘She passed along the yellow lane driven deep between the high banks of earth where the roots of great elm-trees cropped out. Every step was familiar to her. The lane with many twists under overarching branches ran down a steep hill and came out into the open by the big house with its pillared portico and its light grey stone and its wonderful garden of lawn and edges. A tiny church with a narrow graveyard and strange carefully-trimmed square bushes of yew stood next to the house, and beyond the church the lane dipped to the river and the cottage.’ Stella is described as tramping the turf of her well-loved Downs. The characters are mentioned as riding there and also rowing on the river Adur. Mason’s scenic descriptions of a time before the noise of the motor engine, are poetic and beautiful: ”Listen”, said Stella in a whisper and the river rippling against its banks with now a deep sob and now a fairy’s laugh sang to them in notes almost musical and clear. The liquid melody and the flutter of a bird’s wings in the bough of a tree were the only sounds.’ It is very much a bygone world of village cricket and tea on the lawn. A family, the Pettifers, live in ‘a big house of the Georgian period at the bottom of an irregular square in the middle of the little town’ and Great Beeding is new Shoreham where Robert Pettifer descends from the London train. The writer Alfred Mason was elected as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Coventry in the 1906 general election. He served only a single term in Parliament, retiring at the next general election in January 1910. Mason had been offered a knighthood but declined it declaring that such honours meant little to a childless man. He died on the 22nd November 1948 in London. Judy Upton

What's a weed and what's not?
O
N THE WHOLE it’s not been a bad start to the early summer. The temperatures have not been too bad and it has stayed pretty dry for quite a while. There has been the odd cold snap, but nothing so drastic that we’ve had to worry about frost, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that it continues. Perhaps this year will have one of the summers we remember for a long time for the right reasons!
10
By now everything in the garden is starting to romp away, as the warmer weather and long daylight hours encourages everything to really get going. Unfortunately, as well as the wonderful displays of plants and flowers it also includes weeds. I often get asked two questions regarding weeds. Firstly, what’s a weed and what’s not? There are obvious answers to that one, with the usual suspects, such as dandelions, mares tail, chickweed etc. The second is the answer; 'anything growing in the wrong place that you don’t want'. I think it sums it up fairly well. A good example of this is bindweed. It’s a real thug of a plant that takes over everything, but it does actually have very attractive flowers. That’s why it ended up being imported to England by the Victorian, as they thought it looked nice. It does, but too the detriment of everything else! Weeds are good at doing what they want to do, which is surviving and multiplying. They fight other plants for light, food and water. Get rid of them and the plants you do want will fare so much better and you’ll benefit from a better crop of flowers or vegetables. The other question I get asked, is how to get rid of them, especially without using weedkiller. The answer to that one is simple. It's hard work. It needs a session of digging them out and removing them, and not to the compost heap! Once you have got on top of them, then it’s a lot easier to keep control, especially in warmer drier weather, whereby you can simply hoe between the plants to keep them down. It’s a very effective and quick method. I often see various ideas mentioned as alternatives to using weedkiller such as putting salt onto them. Unfortunately, certain commercial weed killers are based on this and it has the same effect in that it poisons the soil, so I really wouldn’t advise it! Whatever you do in the garden, this is one of the best times of year and it’s easy to let it go past in the blink of an eye. So please do take time to just stop and look around. There really is nothing better than sitting in the garden of an evening time and relishing the last of the days’ sun and warmth, whilst listening to the birds and taking in the displays you and nature have worked so hard to produce. Give that pain the elbow This month Louis Jones will be talking about Tennis Elbow, a very common injury that affects not only the tennis player but also manual workers and desk-based people who type. What are Tennis Elbow?
Tennis elbow or its anatomical name, “lateral epicondylitis”, is a painful condition felt in the outside of the elbow and forearm, which is worse when gripping, such as when playing racquet sports, mountain biking, or on activities where you extend your fingers and wrists such as typing, or playing piano.
How does it occur?
The extensor muscles in the forearm that extend your wrist and fingers attach into a single point on the outside of the elbow, so when the muscles contract or tense they pull at the elbow, causing repetitive strain, trauma and inflammation, which in turn causes pain and possibly swelling.
How can you treat it?
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

If you are unfortunate enough to develop tennis elbow, there are certain things you can do to help the condition or alleviate the pain. 1. Use a tennis elbow strap or sports tape to compress the point of tenderness, which helps stop the muscles that pull on the elbow. 2. Use ice packs to help reduce swelling and inflammation. 3. Massage the elbow and muscles of the forearm to help reduce tension and strain on the elbow. 4. Stretch the muscles of the forearm by keeping the elbow straight, with your palm facing down and flex your wrist towards the floor. 5. Use anti-inflammatory gels to massage into the elbow. 6. If you play racquet sports, try changing the grip on your racquet to a slightly wider grip, as having a narrow grip encourages you to grip tighter. This is very common in tennis players who change racquets, to a new one where the grip is narrower. 7. Changing your posture at your desk can have a positive effect on reducing tennis elbow. 8. If you have tried these steps above and you are still experiencing pain, then you should consult a physiotherapist, who can treat the painful condition. If you manage this condition early enough then the recovery time is much shorter and the overall outcome is very successful. It is always advisable to prevent a problem from getting worse than to try treating it once the painful symptoms are more chronic and persistent. Sweaty feet
This month Karen and Gaynor, podiatrists at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, talk about the most weather appropriate issue of sweaty feet (Hyperhidrosis). Most of us have suffered from foot perspiration and odour from time to time, yet for some people, sweaty feet are a persistent problem which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. There are more sweat glands per inch in our feet than anywhere else in the body so it’s not surprising that this can cause foot problems such as foot odour and a greater risk of minor skin infections, through athlete's foot, or blisters. Hot weather can make matters worse, although sweaty feet is a winter, as well as a summer, problem. It can also be an inherited condition or caused through hormonal changes. If you are suffering with sweaty feet and their effects, why not make an appointment with First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea. Contact them on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic. co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
