3-5pm, Friday 14th July 2017 Buckingham Park Primary School
Buckingham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 5UD Buckingham Park Primary School will be holding their annual Summer Fair on Friday 14th July 2017 between 3-5pm, for pupils, their families, and the local community. Food and drink, games, bouncy castles, toys, books and the emergency services are amongst the array of things that will be available on the day, some provided by parents and some provided by the pupils and staff. The Summer Fair is one of a number of annual events held by the schools registered charity team, Buckingham Events, who are working tirelessly to raise funds to regenerate the playground. Since the school changed from a Middle School to a Primary School, the playground desperately needs updating to meet the needs of the younger children. This development requires a substantial amount of funding and is reliant on donations and support at these events to bring it to fruition. Please come along with your family, friends and neighbours to support the school with their initiatives. If you would like to contribute in any other way such as sponsorship or donations, please contact buckinghamevents@hotmail.com or alternatively call the school on 01273 453515. COME AND MEET JASPER! If you read this magazine regularly then you will already be aware that 2017 is the centenary of the founding of the Lions organisation and that in July Adur East Lions will be mounting an exhibition of the history of Lions at the Manor Cottage in Southwick. The exhibition will open on 1 July and continue each Saturday in July. This will be an event of interest not only to local historians and those wanting to help out in their local community but also to children and families. It is hoped that Jasper, the cuddly Lions mascot, will be in attendance in order to hand out free gifts to children and there will also be a free prize draw for anyone attending the event. Do try to make it along on one Saturday to find out more about the Lions and also visit the Manor Cottage which is crammed full of interesting artefacts. There are many things that Lions are well known for such as inventing the use of the white stick and Message in a Bottle (more on this in future articles) but they are also very keen to support any 4
projects that encourage young people to be active and help in the community. ‘Young Leaders in Service’ is a scheme that recognises help that any young person provides to those in need, either in their own home, as in caring for a relative, or in the wider community. There are bronze, silver and gold awards which are recognised internationally and make a great addition to a C.V. If you know a youngster who needs recognition or maybe run a youth group who would like to take part in the scheme then please get in touch. As the Lions organisation is international with clubs in most countries of the World there is cooperation and collaboration between them and in July Adur East Lions are proud to welcome four young people from abroad who will be attending a Youth Camp in this country. They will stay with Lions for two weeks learning about English culture, visiting local attractions and helping out with Lions activities. This will be followed by a two week camp meeting up with other
young people who have been hosted by Lions clubs all over the country. To contact the Lions visit: www.adureastlions.org.uk or their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ adureastlionsclub or call 08458 337356.

Making time for your finances
I
N OUR BUSY lives it is not surprising that our finances often take a back seat. The weeks, months and years roll by and despite good intentions many people never find the time to actually sit down and look at their financial situation. Although finances are often at the bottom of the to-do list, taking stock and arranging your money effectively can have life changing effects. Maybe by getting your investments and pensions working harder for you, you could end up with a much larger fund. This could give you more opportunities to enjoy during your retirement or maybe even retire a little earlier. Reviewing your finances on a regular basis can make a huge difference over your lifetime. Many people have several different investments and pensions. It can be difficult to keep track of performance, risk levels and charges. Often the paperwork you receive will seem complicated, so it is filed away for later.
"A difference in performance can have a great impact on your retirement income." Your pensions and investments could be invested in funds which are not performing as well as they could be. You may see your pension as being “frozen”, meaning you are no longer paying in, but the funds are still invested. A difference in performance can have a great impact on your retirement income. This is your money, it’s important to make sure it’s looked after and invested in the right place. Not only investments and pensions; are you paying for policies you no longer need and are no longer relevant to your situation? Could you pay less, or extend your cover for the premiums you are paying? Direct debits come from your bank account, do you know what they are for? It may seem complicated to review things, but we can take the stress of out that. An IFA can contact the providers directly for information, meaning you don’t have to find all the paperwork. All we need is the policy number, the name of the 6
life company and your permission to obtain the information. Our client systems allow us to keep details of all your plans under one roof so you can see things clearly and from a different perspective. We will then be able to advise you going forward. If you would like a review of your finances, for independent advice please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be happy to assist.. John Constable
T
HE ARTIST JOHN Constable is the subject of an exhibition at Brighton Museum until October 2017. One of the paintings on display is entitled ‘Shoreham Bay, Evening Sunset’. It was painted on the 22nd May 1828 and depicts the setting sun over a then much less developed Shoreham-by-Sea, viewed from the Downland behind. This location was praised as one of the most pleasant and rural situations in the vicinity. The melancholy character of this sunset scene however may be linked to the declining health of Constable’s wife Maria, who died six months after it was painted. John Constable was born in 1796 in East Bergholt, Suffolk. His father was a wealthy corn merchant and he was expected to follow him into the family business, which he did for a short time after leaving school, before his younger brother took over. As a young man, John Constable sketched in the surrounding Suffolk and Essex countryside and he described the inspiration his work as being “the sound of water escaping from mill dams etc., willows, old rotten planks, slimy posts and brickwork. I love such things.” An art collector called George Beaumont showed him his prized works including Claude Lorrain’s ‘Hagar And The Angel’ and this work became an influence on the fledgling artist’s style. In 1799, Constable managed to persuade his father to let him pursue art as his career and he entered the Royal Academy Schools. By 1803 he was exhibiting work at the prestigious Royal Academy itself. In 1802 Constable refused a post of drawing master at Great Marlow Military College, wishing to dedicate himself to becoming a professional landscape painter. His work depicted scenes of every day life in the countryside, at a time when many artists were more interested in presenting a romantic fantasy of wild scenes and ruins. In 1803 Constable toured both abroad and in the Lake District. A friend remarked that the lonely mountain scenes there did not inspire the artist as “His nature was peculiarly social and could not feel satisfied with scenery, however grand in itself, that did not abound in human associations. He required villages, churches, farmhouses and
cottages.” To earn a living, Constable painted some portraits at this time, but his love remained with landscapes. In 1811 he first visited Salisbury whose cathedral and surrounds were to be the subjects of some of his greatest works. In 1816 Constable painted Maria Bicknell, the childhood friend he was to marry in that same year. The couple’s honeymoon included a visit to Brighton where painting the sea encouraged Constable to develop new techniques of using brilliant colours and lively brushwork to capture its beauty and movement. Constable’s most famous painting ‘The Hay Wain’ also known as the view from Flatford Mill was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1821, and then to even greater acclaim at the Paris Salon in 1824. The house visible in ‘The Hay Wain’, Willie Lott’s cottage, became famous from its position in this iconic scene. In his lifetime Constable’s paintings sold better in France than in England, but he said “I would rather be a poor man in England than a rich man abroad. He is best known for his paintings of the Dedham Vale, the area around his home that is now known as ‘Constable Country’. In 1825, Constable was living in Brighton, a place he called “Piccadilly by the Seaside”, where he painted his famous ‘Brighton Beach’. His wife was now often in ill health and after the birth of their seventh child in 1828, she died of tuberculosis, aged only 41. Constable was gravely affected by her loss, dressing in black from then onwards and “prey to melancholy and anxious thoughts” as he brought up their seven children alone. In 1829 at the age of 52, Constable was elected to the Royal Academy where he lectured on landscape painting. His painting of Stonehenge with rainbows above it was completed in 1835 and is considered one of the greatest watercolours ever painted. A year later, back in Sussex he painted ‘Arundel Mill and Castle’ He died on the 31st March 1837 from heart failure and was buried with Maria in Hampstead. He not only inspired many artists of his own time, but also the French Impressionists of the late 19th century, and today, his work is as well known and loved as ever. Judy Upton

Weeding out the weeds
O
N THE WHOLE it’s not been a bad start to the early summer. The temperatures have not been too bad and it has stayed pretty dry for quite a while. There has been the odd cold snap, but nothing so drastic that we’ve had to worry about frost, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that it continues. Perhaps this year will have one of the summers we remember for a long time for the right reasons!
By now everything in the garden is starting to romp away, as the warmer weather and long daylight hours encourages everything to really get going. Unfortunately, as well as the wonderful displays of plants and flowers it also includes weeds. I often get asked two questions regarding weeds. Firstly, what’s a weed and what’s not? There are obvious answers to that one, with the usual suspects, such as dandelions, mares tail, chickweed etc. The second is the answer “anything growing in the wrong place that you don’t want” I think it sums it up fairly well. A good example of this is bindweed. It’s a real thug of a plant that takes over everything, but it does actually have very attractive flowers. That’s why it ended up being imported to England by the Victorian, as they thought it looked nice. It does, but too the detriment of everything else! Weeds are good at doing what they want to do, which is surviving and multiplying. They fight other plants for light, food and water. Get rid of them and the plants you do want will fare so much better and you’ll benefit from a better crop of flowers or vegetables The other question I get asked, is how to get rid of them, especially without using weedkiller. The answer to that one is simple. It's hard work. It needs a session of digging them out and removing them, and not to the compost heap! Once you have got on top of them, then it’s a lot easier to keep control, especially in warmer drier weather, whereby you can simply hoe between the plants to keep them down. It’s a very effective and quick method. I often see various ideas mentioned as alternatives to using weedkiller such as putting salt onto them. Unfortunately, certain commercial weed killers are based on this and it has the same effect in that it poisons the soil, so I really wouldn’t advise it! Whatever you do in the garden, this is one of the best times of year and it’s easy to let it go past in the blink of an eye. So please do take time to just stop and look around. There really is nothing better than sitting in the garden of an evening time and relishing the last of the days’ sun and warmth, whilst listening to the birds and taking in the displays you and nature have worked so hard to produce. Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

The perils and pitfalls of online conveyancing
OVING HOUSE CAN be very stressful, we feel it is important you have access to a lawyer who can guide you through the process to ensure you avoid potential pitfalls, a swift conclusion and get you into your new home with the minimum of fuss and delay. Conveyancing is seen by some as an administration task, but that is far from the truth. There are all manner of pitfalls with buying property and land that need to be properly checked and investigated. Once you have exchanged contracts you are contractually bound to complete the purchase and you are stuck with any problems or un-investigated issues!
Gazumping, failed completions on the big day, finding out you have inherited the seller’s debt, neighbours have legal rights over your land which is news to you, no legal rights of way to access your land — all manner of horrors can occur as part of the conveyancing process. We have found over the past year or so that there are a large number of online companies offering legal services. Their work is often obtained not from repeat business or word of mouth, but from bonus referral schemes with estates agents or some mortgage companies. In other words, some of the money their clients pay the online conveyancer goes to the estate agent and not towards legal fees, meaning the client tends to get an inexperienced call centre type practice. At QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke (Brighton's oldest law firm), we carefully carry out all checks to ensure that the seller is entitled to sell the land or property right up to where we hand over your money on completion, but what often isn’t appreciated are other vital checks and considerations that need to be carried out along the way. We are assisted by searches we carry out with the Local Authority, Water Board and Environmental Agency but don't assume that any alteration is legal, correctly built, won't need to be pulled down, there isn't a third party, tenant or authority waiting to make a claim on the property. We ensure when you move in all these issues will have been thoroughly investigated and any issues resolved. All our clients want is a smooth property transaction in a reasonable timescale and to move on the day of completion as

How can I and my colleagues at QualitySolicitorsHowlett Clarke help you? We are proud to say that much of our client base is repeat business, which after 244 years of trading, we believe, says a lot. From acting for the Prince Regent in acquiring land, developing the Brighton Pavilion, to acting for you today, each and every client is important to us — we really do value your instruction. NO MOVE – NO FEE — we will do everything in our power to ensure your house move is completed swiftly and with the minimum stress and fuss but should the worst happen and you are not able to move, we will not charge you a fee for the conveyancing work. We are one of the very few solicitors in the country that offers this service at no extra cost to our clients. UNREGISTERED LAND — For no extra cost we can deal with this for you whether you are selling or buying. FIXED FEES AND NO HIDDEN EXTRAS — what we quote is what you pay. Our advice is to choose your solicitor carefully and don't be rushed into accepting one recommended by your estate agent, ask if there is a cash payment being made for the recommendation! Hamstrings or lower back?
This month, Louis Jones will be looking at one of the most common sports injuries, which often get misdiagnosed. Hamstring strains happen all the time when playing sport, but often the injury is not related to a muscle strain and can in fact be linked instead to the lower back. How do we differentiate between a hamstring strain and referred pain from the lower back? One very easy test, which can differentiate between a hamstrings strain and a lower back issue is called “Slump Test”. In this test we can put the spinal cord and sciatic nerve on a stretch, whilst increasing the hamstrings stretch. First we can

compare the feeling between the left and the right leg, by testing each leg separately. Secondly, by keeping the hamstrings on a stretch, but releasing tension in the spinal cord, a reduction in pain indicates a potential lower back or nerve issue, whereas no change in painful symptoms, will indicate a hamstrings strain. Other ways to differentiate between a potential lower back and hamstrings strain are as follows: Hamstrings Strain • Possible local or widespread bruising • Normally local acute tenderness on palpation • Pain on resisted knee bend • Pain on hamstrings stretch locally • Is normally very painful on exercise • Ice packs usually relieve the pain during the acute early phase of a hamstrings strain Lower back/sciatic nerve • No relief or increased pain on attempting to stretch the hamstrings, normally felt like an intense toothache sensation • More general less specific pain, often sharp or shooting like in nature • Pain when attempting to bend to put socks and shoes on • Not always painful when doing exercise • Ice packs do not usually help relieve pain and in some cases make it worse There are many other ways a Physiotherapist or healthcare professional can test for whether you are suffering with a muscle strain or a referred neural pain. If you are unsure of what is causing your pain, then you should consult a physiotherapist, so that you can have your injury correctly diagnosed and can follow an appropriate exercise recovery program. PREGNANCY – THE JOY AND THE PAIN Finding out you are pregnant can be one of the most joyful moments of life. However, carrying a baby over nine months can also have its trials, as most mothers will attest! Holly Witcomb, osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre and a part-time lecturer at the British School of Osteopathy, explains what can be done to help.
D
URING PREGNANCY THE mother’s body undergoes a great amount of change to accommodate the growing foetus. The postural changes and increase in weight are obvious, but other changes may be subtler, such as the effects of hormonal softening of ligaments and the position of the growing baby. All this can put additional pressure on the joints and muscles of your spine and pelvis. The most common complaints during pregnancy are: • Lower Back Pain • Sciatica • Pelvic Girdle Pain • Shortness of breath • Neck, shoulder and upper-back pain • Insomnia • Swelling (oedema) of the joints, especially ankles and wrists • High blood pressure • Fatigue Your midwife and GP of course will monitor for any serious deterioration in your health. However, some discomfort may be considered within “normal” limits, but still be affect your quality of life and ability to carry out normal daily tasks. This is especially problematic if there are other toddlers or children to care for, and/or if you are still at work.
Keep moving and be kind to yourself Finding a yoga or Pilates class run by a teacher who is qualified in working with pregnant women can help to keep your body both supple and strong to deal with the changes that occur. This may be enough to ensure you manage to avoid any excessive pain. A massage from a therapist qualified or experienced in pregnancy massage can also help to relieve tight muscles and reduce any stress you may be feeling.
Breathe!
As the baby grows and takes up abdominal space, the diaphragm has less room to move and there is less room for the mother’s lungs to 16
expand, which can lead to shortness of breath and sometimes gastrointestinal reflux. Again, specialised pregnancy yoga and Pilates classes can both help you maintain mobility of this area. Osteopathic treatment can also be a great help in improving circulation and breathing mechanics and relieving thoracic stiffness or pain.
Preparing for birth
During birth, a range of factors influences the descent of the baby through the pelvis. The position of the mother’s pelvis may be torsioned (out-of-alignment), which can interfere with the baby’s passage through the birth canal. Osteopathic treatment can help to align your body so that your pelvis and lower back mechanics are in the best possible position in preparation for the birth, with as little tension or restriction as possible. The philosophy of Osteopathy is that structure and function are interrelated and interdependent. Treatments during pregnancy are no different. We aim to assist the natural process of pregnancy and birth by aiding the body to adapt and align as the pregnancy progresses. All osteopaths have thorough training in treating pregnant women and techniques used are safe and gentle for both the mother and the baby, carefully selected to minimise risk and always ensuring the maximum comfort for the mother.
After the birth
If there are unresolved stresses on the mother’s body from childbirth, these can contribute not only to ongoing back problems, but also to difficulties with menstruation, stress incontinence, and bowel problems such as constipation. Osteopathic care can help to restore and maintain normal pelvic alignment and mobility, helping to take away any pain and discomfort. It can also help with aches and pains associated with the practicalities, such as poor breast-feeding posture, lifting car capsules and prams, carrying your baby and bending over the cot. Overall, postnatal treatment can help with long term preventative care, allowing you to relax and enjoy your new baby. Adur Stamp Club The Adur Stamp Club was formed in 2016 from the amalgamation of the Shoreham Stamp Club (formerly Shoreham by Sea Philatelic Society) and the Southwick Philatelic Society. This was done to create a stronger and more diverse club, which seems to have been successful. The club is always looking for new members and is a friendly and welcoming group. It is accepted that stamp collecting is not as popular as it once was, but it can still be an interesting hobby. It is not just a matter of amassing lots of little bits of perforated paper, but can be as diverse and in depth as the individual likes to make it. Many people had a schooldays collection and have come back to the hobby in later years, expanding on their original material and very often going off to collect a wide range of interests. Some collectors have come to the hobby afresh, wanting to find an interest that is relaxing. and at the same time can be challenging. There are many avenues that can be taken under the heading of ‘Stamp
18
Collecting’, the single country collections, which can be as basic or complex as the individual wishes to make it, by looking at different issues, methods of printing, watermarks and perforations. There are different aspects of the hobby under such headings as: - Thematic, Postal History, Aero Philately, Social Philately, etc. Nobody should be put off by the designation philately; this is the umbrella name for all the branches of the hobby of stamp collecting. Thematic collecting has seen an increase in interest in recent years, where the collection is formed around a specific subject, and the range is tremendous, from cars, planes and trains to science, nature and butterflies. No matter what a person is interested in, there will be stamps and related items to illustrate it. In regard to ‘related’ items, these can be in the form of postcards, postmarks, special envelopes, first day covers and other mail related items. This is where the topic can get really interesting, where research into the subject can lead to many discoveries and increasing
knowledge of the subject. Hopefully these few words will arouse some readers to want to investigate further, and the members of Adur Stamp Club will be only too pleased to assist. Meetings are on the third Monday of each month, at 7pm at the Southwick Community Centre, where there will usually be a display by a visiting collector. To celebrate the amalgamation, and the 90th year of the Shoreham club, a special commemorative envelope was produced. This envelope bears a stamp from the Royal Mail 500 issue, has a postmark for the Battle of Hastings anniversary and was carried on an operational launch by the RNLI Shoreham lifeboat. There were only 50 produced, each individually numbered and priced at £5 + p&p, all proceeds to the RNLI. Enquiries to Bob Knight on 01273 or Dave Hilton on email. d.hiltonburland@gmail.com

God of Carnage
Wick Theatre Company’s next production will be God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza. A playground dispute between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of middle class parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions French playwright, Yasmina Reva emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters. We are proud to present Yasmina Reza’s award-winning play. Originally performed in its native French, the play has been successfully translated into English by Christopher Hamilton and has been equally acclaimed in London and on Broadway. Dates are Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 June, 7.45pm at the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick. Tickets cost £11 from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk
