ADUR & WORTHING COUNCILS RECYCLING TOGETHER LUCKY £100 WINNERS! Last month the newly elected Chair of Adur District Council, Councillor Ann Bridges, hosted a special tea party at the Shoreham Centre Pond Road, for 10 lucky members of the public. The prize draw was the concluding part of phase 1 of Recycling Together, an initiative to improve recycling quality in Adur and Worthing using incentives for local residents and funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government to the tune of £136,000. The event was mainly attended by residents in Shoreham; Councillor Ann Bridges, Adur & Worthing Councils Director for Customer Services Jane Eckford and members of the Adur & Worthing Recycling Together team. Mrs Benita Brewer, pictured 7th from the right, said: “It is so nice to be recognised by the Council for what you do, the extra little bit of effort you put in. But to be honest, we didn't think we had done anything too special, just our normal recycling. This afternoon has been wonderful, I have enjoyed it so much and feel so appreciated. I wasn't sure about coming this afternoon but am so very glad I have.” Adur & Worthing Councils Director of Customer Services, Jane Eckford, adds: “This, the first phase of our Recycling Together initiative, has proved to be a resounding success, exceeding our
expectations. The Recycling Together team and the residents of Adur & Worthing have worked together in upping the standard and volume of recyclable waste. We have also enjoyed a higher level of direct engagement with our residents and it is a pleasure to meet some of them here today. We embarked on this initiative to learn more about recycling behaviours and where support could be improved. We have learnt invaluable insights into the barriers to recycling that some residents perceive. Equally, we have been greatly impressed with the commitment and passion that already exists in many residents to recycle and manage their waste effectively and we want to thank them all for their impressive participation in this project. Adur & Worthing Councils continue to work towards the Government's target of 50% of all waste collected being recycled and diverted from landfill by 2020 and we will continue to work with residents to reduce the levels of domestic waste through recycling."

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Tax Free Savings Interest – the new personal savings allowance
F
ROM 6TH APRIL 2016 if you are a basic rate taxpayer you will be able to earn up to £1,000 in savings income tax free. If you are a higher rate taxpayer you will be able to earn up to £500 savings interest tax free. This is the new Personal Savings Allowance, or PSA. Previously if you were a basic rate taxpayer you would pay 20% tax on your interest, this was deducted directly by the bank or building society. If you were a higher rate taxpayer you would pay an extra 20% tax. This has changed and the providers will now pay the interest without deduction of tax.
years tax allowances can change and the interest you receive may increase. Investing in a cash ISA each year using your ISA allowance ensures that interest will be paid tax free both now and in the future. If you would like advice on the above, or any other financial matters, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. Talk Money is a trading style Aspect 8, a member of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount invested.
What is included?
The allowance includes interest on building society or bank accounts, interest distributions from authorised unit trusts or Open Ended Investment Companies (OIECs) and investment trusts. Also income from Government bonds (Gilts) or Company Bonds.
What about ISAs?
ISA interest is already tax free so any interest you earn on cash ISAs does not have to be included. Interest will continue to be paid tax free but doesn’t count towards your PSA limit.
Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
What do I need to do to claim the interest tax free? Quite simply, you don’t need to do anything. Your building society or bank will automatically pay the interest without deducting any tax. They will then provide the relevant information to HMRC who will adjust your tax code accordingly.
Is it worth saving in a cash ISA now?
If you can get interest tax free then you may wonder if it is worth putting your savings into cash ISAs, especially if there are higher rates available in normal savings accounts. Some people have been reviewing their investments for this reason and some are now directing their savings into higher rate accounts which are not cash ISAs. It really depends on your circumstances, the level of cash you have to invest and your own personal tax situation. Remember that interest rates are low at the moment, and much of your interest may come within the new personal savings allowance, however, in future 6

Chanctonbury Ring
A
MONG THE EARLIEST signs of human visitors to Chanctonbury Ring are pieces of tile, brick and oyster shells, dating from Neolithic era. A broken piece of marble has been found as well as flints that had been crafted into axe heads. In the Neolithic period (c. 4300-2100 BC) tools were often made in one location, in a kind of primitive workshop area, by a number of individuals skilled in their production. The flints were obtained by mining in the chalk of the Downs, originally with implements made of bone. These workmen were not Homo sapiens like us but either Homo Heidelbergensis or Neanderthals, two earlier species with stockier builds and prominent brow bones. At this time Britain was still in the grips of an ice age and these near-relatives were better equipped to deal with the colder climate. A rough track exists from this time too, which would have formed a branch of a route running from Beachy Head in the east, via Cissbury and Lancing Rings towards Hampshire and Salisbury Plain. An early Bronze Age skeleton of a young woman was discovered in a round burial barrow or mound on the west slope of the hill, buried in a crouching position with a bronze dagger at her side. In the late Bronze Age the circular hill fort was constructed. It may have originally been designed to shelter a nomadic group’s livestock and still exists today as a ditch and raised earth bank, with one entrance. In the Romano-Celtic era, the hill fort contained two stonebuilt temples, constructed during the first or second century AD. The temple in the centre of the ring consisted of a shrine surrounded by a roofed colonnade and there is evidence that it had painted wall plaster. In this period of the Roman Empire, the Romans were a civilian, rather than military presence in Southern England. Villas were being constructed across the region, including the one at Fishbourne, and a now lost one at Southwick, and the new town of Chichester was established on the site of a previous military settlement. Among Roman finds at Chanctonbury are coins, tiles and a brooch. In 1760, Charles Goring, who lived at Wiston House below
8
and was the landowner of the area, planted the ring of trees on Chanctonbury Hill. He followed the original prehistoric earthwork ring and also put some trees inside it. In Charles Goring’s time, the origins of the original ditch and raised bank circle would have been a mystery, as its antiquity was yet to be established. Most of the original trees planted by Goring were beech, but there were also Scots pines and spruce, making sure there would be some foliage all year round. When it was first built, water would have had to be carried up the Downland for the trees, by horse-drawn cart but later dewponds were constructed, to also provide water for grazing cattle. In 1866, the Goring family considered building a Swiss Cottage, in Chanctonbury Ring, as an amusement for their children. Swiss Cottages were highly fashionable and Queen Victorian had one built in the grounds of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Resembling a wooden Swiss Alpine chalet, if built it would have been similar to the Swiss Cottage erected in the Shoreham pleasure gardens in the mid 1800s (and now a public house). Swiss Cottage in London, sports a similar pub, now on an island in the busy Finchley Road. R.D Blackmore, author of ‘Lorna Doone’, mentioned Chanctonbury Ring in his 1875 novel ‘Alice Lorraine: A Tale Of The South Downs’. He describes it as “crowned with darker eminence by a circle of storm huddled trees”. The exposed nature of the hilltop was something that was always to prove a challenge for the trees, and the spooky reputation of the ring, may in part be due to the twisted shapes many of the older trees displayed, after being bent and bowed by years of gales. As a landmark, Hilaire Belloc also mentions Chanctonbury Ring in his literary work, as does Rudyard Kipling. The great gale of 1987 destroyed seventy five percent of the trees at Chanctonbury Ring, and among them, many fine, ancient specimens were lost. The ring was subsequently replanted however and is once again a proud landmark that can be viewed from much of the Adur Valley. Judy Upton

Thriving vegetable gardens
A
S WE APPROACH mid-summer, even though we’ve passed the actual longest day, I think it’s fair to say we are unlikely to get a hosepipe ban this year, with a lot of rainfall through June. In many cases the rainfall has been quite dramatic, and it really emphasises the need for good drainage in your garden, whether it’s on soft areas such as lawns or on hard areas such as patios. The water has to go somewhere, so try and make some allowance for it when you are planning a garden This really is a fantastic time of year when all the plants, fruit and vegetables are racing away, through a combination of warm weather and long daylight hours. By the time you read this, the longest day has been and gone, and little by little the daylight hours that the plants depend on are diminishing. Sorry to sound gloomy but it’s true! Take time to make the most of the garden
10
whilst the garden is in full swing. There are several jobs you can do around the garden to get more out of the plants and make them last that bit longer. Plants basically grow to produce more offspring, so as soon as flowers start to die off they go into the seed producing stage. Keep making them produce flowers by regularly removing any blooms that have started to look past their best. Many plants especially those in pots and baskets will benefit from a feed, either in tablet form, or as a liquid feed, which gets to work much quicker. These are available in a number of different forms and are simply mixed in with water in the watering can. The vegetable gardens should be thriving by now, with the first crops of summer starting to come to fruition. With many vegetables there is actually a short spell when the produce is good for picking. If you miss it then that’s it for another year. A good example of this is peas. Leave it a few days too late to pick them and you will be disappointed. Pick them at the right time and the flavour is wonderful. The advice with deadheading flowers holds true with vegetables. Keep on picking them regularly and they will produce more. The advice for flowers with regards a boost from liquid fertilisers also holds true for vegetables. Most will benefit from a watering of a mixture of this, producing more and larger fruit. There is still plenty of time to sow many vegetables for later summer and autumn harvests, as well as looking forward to sowing seeds now that will bring in fresh vegetables during the late winter and early spring. As always salads are popular for summer dishes and regular sowings every few weeks will ensure that you have a bountiful supply throughout the summer. Even if you have only a couple of spare pots, you can grow enough in these, alternating when you plant in each one to keep salad on the table. They are great for children to grow as they can see quick results and enjoy giving them haircuts on a regular basis, especially if you plant them in smiley face patterns. Many of the large diy stores stock salad seeds for as little as 40 pence a packet so it’s well worth giving it a try. By the time it gets to this part of the year I usually find my couple of raised beds are severely lacking in room, due to all the plants taking over. However, in a couple of weeks with a bit of picking spaces soon become available. Take advantage of those spaces and get some quick growing seeds in there to plug the gaps and keep the salad bowl full! At this time of year there really is no excuse not to be out in the garden on the long summer evenings, and if you even spend a few minutes each evening whilst out there doing a few jobs you really will keep the garden looking better for longer, so give it a go and enjoy it. Let Ovenu take the heat out of the kitchen this summer
O
VENU – WORTHING’S Steve Rose is an experienced oven valeting specialist; he is offering his professional service to homes and businesses in the town this summer, so people can enjoy their holidays with loved ones during the British summertime. While homeowners will be cleaning their properties in preparation for the arrival of guests during bank holidays and the six-week school break, Steve, owner of Ovenu Worthing, are warning people not to forget about their ovens. Steve said: “When the weather is nice, people don’t want to be stuck indoors cleaning their ovens, they would much rather be spending time with family and friends in the garden. It may be BBQ season, but the oven is still an integral part of any home and if left unattended, there will be a build-up of grease and grime, which can cause many health and safety risks. “Cleaning the oven is one of the most hated household chores and our professional service has been designed to take the heat out of the kitchen. It is vital that any potential health and safety risks are addressed – sooner, rather than later. A clean

oven can also improve its efficiency, which will not only prolong its lifespan, but save you from buying a new appliance.” The Ovenu valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves and placing them into design-registered equipment, which uses environmentally-friendly, non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes between two and three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. Ovenu is accredited by the British Accreditation Bureau to ISO 9001 and all cleaning products used by Ovenu are environmentally friendly, bio-degradable and conform to the latest government REACH regulations. Ovenu’s Carbon Remover is also approved by the Vitreous Enamel Association. Steve added that: “Summertime in England is very indifferent and is often a mixed bag of good weather with, at times, torrential rainfall, so families will want to spend as much precious time as possible on day trips out in the good weather, as opposed to running errands and cleaning the kitchen.” For more information about Ovenu, or to make a booking with Steve, call 01903 879767, or email ovenuworthing@gmail.com alternatively you can visit www.ovenuworthing.net. What causes it?
The Swimmers Shoulder
Swimming is a very popular leisure activity, whether it be in a pool or the sea. This month Louis Jones looks at a common injury that occurs in swimmers, the swimmers shoulder.
What is Swimmers Shoulder?
This is a broad term related to overuse injuries of the shoulder joint, such as rotator cuff impingement (pinching of the rotator tendons as the arm is lifted), biceps tendonitis (a painful inflammation of the biceps tendon), and shoulder instability, in which structures that surround the shoulder joint do not work to maintain the ball within its socket.
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

Most of the time, shoulder injury in the swimmer is due to poor technique, overuse through over training, and weakness or instability in the shoulder. Poor technique, can include: 1. A poor catch, when you try and scoop water back and end up putting too much strain through the shoulder. 2. Poor position in the water, for example swimming too flat without enough trunk rotation can put excess strain on the shoulder, as you are relying on the shoulder to compensate by moving further. Weakness or instability means that your muscles are underdeveloped and do not support your shoulder correctly, so that the shoulder joint can move around more freely in its joint but without proper control. Thirdly, having poor flexibility can cause injury, if you are trying to achieve large movements that your shoulder isn’t capable of.
How can we avoid Swimmers Shoulder?
1. Strengthening exercises to build stability around the shoulder joint and shoulder blade, namely the rotator cuff muscles. External and internal rotation exercises with an exercise band are good for strengthening the rotator cuff. Also strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blades (by squeezing your shoulder blades together), and the big lateral muscles of the shoulder (the Lattisimus Dorsi) to help with catching and pulling the water. 2. Stretching/mobility exercises to allow adequate flexibility and joint movement to make achieving a good technique possible. Exercises such as circling the shoulders are good mobility exercises and pendular swinging. Stretching the shoulders and chest, such as hugging a straight arm across your body with your opposite arm, or stretching a straight arm behind you, using a door frame is good. 3. Improving trunk and neck mobility can be important, to avoid any neural tension in the shoulder and upper limbs, and also to assist mobility in the shoulders. 4. When is the water, make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, in order to keep the cells in your muscles hydrated and reducing your risk of injury. It is possible to get dehydrated even in a cold pool! 5. Doing core strength exercises is important, to assist a good position in the water, and to support your back, neck and shoulders. 6. Practice good technique by doing swimming drills, focusing on individual parts of a swim stroke, and avoid swimming when you get tired and your form deteriorates. If in doubt stop and rest to allow your body recovery, before starting again. 7. You can alleviate strain on your shoulders by using various swimming aids, such as fins, a pull buoy or paddles. Used correctly, these items can greatly improve your position in the water, assist your technique, and allow your body to perform fewer strokes, which can reduce the risk of overuse or repetition. So whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or triathlete, or you just enjoy a paddle on holiday, remember to limber up and stretch to avoid injury. If you are unfortunate enough to develop a shoulder injury, feel free to contact me on 01273467614 or at louisjones.physio@ googlemail.com. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Legendary 60s band the Animals set for Shoreham Friday 8th July, 8pm, Ropetackle Centre, Shoreham-by-Sea. Tickets: £20
In 1964, a wave of new energetic rock and roll swept over the world. On the crest of this wave was The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and, of course, The Animals. Hailing from the banks of the River Tyne, The Animals offered a brand of rhythm n blues that took the world by storm. They were the second British band to top the US charts after The Beatles with the now legendary anthem, House Of The Rising Sun. The band subsequently achieved over twenty global top 10 hits, many of which going to number #1 across the world. In Britain alone, the band had no less than twelve chart entries. This intimate live show will feature all the hits including House Of The Rising Sun, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, Boom Boom (as featured in Skyfall), and many more. After 50 years the legendary Animals sound still endures, and this show by Animals & Friends promises to reaffirm the legacy of the truly iconic band. Featuring original members of The Animals, John Steel and Mick Gallagher, plus Danny Handley and Roberto Ruiz. Ropetackle spokesman Mark Phillips said: ‘One of the most influential and significant bands to emerge from the sixties rock n roll boom, the Animals are rightly considered legends of British music and after 50 years, their sound remains as powerful as ever. 20
‘Alongside the Beatles and Rolling Stones, the Animals formed part of the now legendary ‘British Invasion’ of US pop music in the 1960s, and were the second British band to top the US charts after the Beatles with the now legendary anthem, House Of The Rising Sun. ‘The band subsequently achieved over twenty global top 10 hits including We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, and Boom Boom (which featured in the film Skyfall). ‘Now in the form of Animals & Friends, and featuring original members John Steel (drums) and Mick Gallagher (keyboard/ Hammond organ), they continue to perform live and this summer have their sights set on Shoreham. ‘Their show at Ropetackle this July is the only Sussex date on their tour, offering a rare opportunity to experience one of the greatest bands in British musical history live in concert. The sixties may be gone but the sound still endures, and Animals & Friends are here to prove it!' To book tickets, visit: www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk
