INTERESTED IN BIRDS, THEIR HABITS AND PROTECTION?

Shoreham District Ornithological Society (SDOS), was set up in 1953 to promote the study and protection of birds and their environment especially within the local area. Many years on it continues to thrive with members enjoying monthly meetings from October to April inclusive in St. Peter’s Hall. These evenings provide an opportunity for members to meet, hear a speaker on a relevant topic plus share information on birds seen locally. Organised walks throughout the year give members a chance to learn from experienced birders. A user group allows members to share news and photos of any sightings plus other points of interest. Members alert the Society to any local development that may adversely affect wildlife allowing any necessary representation often in conjunction with the RSPB. One of the important sites locally is Widewater lagoon which has resident birds but also attracts migrants. We work closely with the World of Widewater to protect this area. If you are interested in joining this local club an application form can be downloaded from their website: www.sdos.org.

JEAN TAKES FLIGHT TO RAISE £1255 FOR ST BARNABAS HOUSE East Preston resident Jean Humphreys has raised a fantastic £1,255 for local hospice St Barnabas House by doing a flight in a Spitfire. Jean, 83, admitted it was a lifelong ambition of hers to fly in the famous World War Two fighter plane, and her dream recently became a reality. Jean lifted off from Goodwood Aerodrome on a half hour flight as far as the Needles on the Isle of Wight and over Littlehampton Golf Course, of which she is a member. Jean said: “It was fabulous; quite noisy and smelly, but exhilarating. I did all the appropriate things. I did what they call a floppy loop and a barrel roll and we flew over my golf course at an enormous rate of knots and frightened them all to death! “I’ve wanted to do it for a very long time. In fact, my very first sight of the Spitfire was in 1940 in the Battle of Britain. I was standing in our garden and dad said, ‘Look up there Jean, you can see the fighters dogfighting.’ "I’m glad to say we’ve raised quite a nice sum for the hospice.” It was through her membership at Littlehampton Golf Club that Jean first came into contact with St Barnabas House. The current ladies captain, Janet Madell, has chosen the hospice as her charity of the year. “When I first booked the flight I thought hang on a minute, I could make some money for Janet’s charity here and we could get some sponsorship going. She thought that was a splendid idea.”

Wendy Bardsley, St Barnabas House Community Fundraising Manager, said: “When we found out that Jean was doing the Spitfire flight we were all really excited as it’s such an unusual way to raise money for charity. “Jean has raised a fantastic total of £1,255 which will make a huge difference. That amount is the equivalent of the cost of ten days of care for a patient using our Hospice at Home service. On behalf of us all at St Barnabas House I would like to say a big thank you to Jean for raising such a fantastic amount for the hospice.” If you have been inspired by Jean’s story and would like to sponsor her, you can do so by visiting her JustGiving page: www. justgiving.com/Janet-Madell.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

What does your money mean to you?

A

RTICLES ABOUT FINANCIAL planning often speak about the functionality of your money; your budget, your savings, your investments and financial organisation. But what does this all boil down to? Why do we concern ourselves? The real question is what does your money mean to you? For some people, whether young or old, money is a means to buy physical goods, cars, clothes — the current must have. It’s about looking good in front of their peers, making sure they keep up with the Jones’. People are finding short term happiness by buying “stuff”. The person who treats their money in this way can feed the credit industry with their impulsive purchases and can lead themselves into financial trouble as time moves on. The question to ask yourself, are you living within your means? Are you borrowing and creating a future financial problem? In fact, even if you are living within your means, are you actually saving anything for your future? When you are young, retirement can seem like a distant prospect, but the years roll by very quickly. At the other end of the scale are the savers. For these, the function of their money is often about creating a sense of security themselves and their families. For some this may come from a fear of not being secure, for others it comes from a desire to live a comfortable life, both now and later on. A roof over their head, savings, a good pension and perhaps early retirement. These people are often very aware of their future, they are thinking ahead. It’s not about the must haves of the moment, it’s not about how good they look in front of their friends; it’s about peace of mind. You may be thinking about starting to save and even if it just a small amount each month, it’s possible you will get into a savings habit and your funds can soon build up. From experience, often the people with money as they get older are not the biggest earners, they have thought about their future, organised themselves and saved from an early age. I understand that life has financial pressures and this is not always possible, but whatever stage of your life you are at, you may want to think about your financial attitude and if needed — put some changes in place.

A couple of apt financial quotes to finish “Rich people stay rich by living like they’re broke. Broke people 6

stay broke by living like they’re rich” — Author Unknown. “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world: he who understands it earns it…he who doesn’t…pays it”. — Albert Einstein. Cecil Pashley

S

HOREHAM AIRPORT WAS opened in 1910 and is one of the oldest in the country. Much of is early success was due to aviation pioneers such as Cecil Pashley. Born in the 1890s, Cecil and his brother Eric Pashley were both fascinated by the idea of flying and whilst still in their teens, they taught themselves to fly bi-planes. In July 1911, Cecil took his official flying test for his Royal Aero Club certificate and was issued with licence number 10b. His brother Eric obtained his licence two months later, which was number 139. They were both among the youngest of the first generation of British pilots, along with Tommy Sopworth, and Harold Piffard, who was a former Lancing College student and the first aviator to fly from Shoreham, in 1910. In 1911 Cecil and Eric Pashley founded the Southern Aero Club based at Shoreham, only two years after they had taught themselves to fly. Cecil Pashley bought a cross-Channel Bleriot monoplane and based it at Shoreham when it was still a novelty to fly one. The Pashley brothers ran a pleasure flight business at Shoreham and on Image: West Sussex Records Office Monday May 26th, 1913 they were the first aviators to pilot a land plane on a visit to Bognor Regis. The local newspaper reported that ‘It seemed as though all Bognor was there’ when, at 7pm, Eric’s plane was seen approaching. He landed on the sands opposite the Beach Hotel. Eric Pashley returned to Bognor on the 14th June of the same year, landing the Farman bi-plane in front of a crowd of thousands. He then offered joy rides to the public for the price of two guineas a head. On the penultimate flight of the day however he experienced a few difficulties and according to the local press ‘Mr Pashley came to earth at a faster pace than usual and it looked as if he would hit the pier’. Fortunately the plane missed the pier but it scattered the watching crowd as it came in to land safely.

In May 1913, Cecil and Eric Pashley opened the Pashley Brothers flying school at Shoreham airport. Here they trained many pilots who would later join the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. Eric Pashley himself joined the Royal Flying Corps and shot down eight enemy aircraft before tragically being killed in a flying accident in 1917. During the First World War, Cecil Pashley was a test pilot and instructor for the Royal Naval Air Service. He taught many fighter pilots, including Mick Mannock, who was born in Brighton, and shot down more aircraft than any other British pilot. Pashley was nicknamed the Grand Old Man of Aviation in his later years. He served in the RAF during the Second World War and spent more than 3000 hours as a flying instructor, teaching pilots in Britain, Canada and parts of Africa. He reopened the flying club at Shoreham after the war and was awarded the MBE. It was reckoned that he taught more people to fly than any other pilot, clocking up 20,000 hours in the air. In 1925 Cecil Pashley and Frederick Miles formed the Gnat Aero Company. It operated just west of the original airfield. This company was then split into aircraft overhaul, reconstruction and repair business Southern Aircraft Ltd and the flying school and pleasure flight provider Southern Aero Club. Meanwhile Cecil himself still gave displays in his Avro 504 biplane. Before a display, his agent would sell tickets for joyrides in the plane for the price of 5 shillings each. In 1930 Cecil Pashley flew over Chichester to promote his business, dropping leaflets offering the opportunity of a free flight. He completed more than 50 years as a flying instructor, flying almost up until his death in 1969, aged 77. His wife Vera who lived to be over a hundred, helped him run Southern Aero Club for many years. Cecil Pashley is buried in Mill Lane Cemetery. A road at Shoreham Airport and also a Brighton and Hove Bus Company bus are named after him. Judy Upton

Enjoying the summer

I

T’S BEEN A lovely summer so far from the point of view of the gardener. This time of year is when the garden is in full flow, giving glorious summer displays, and the fruit and vegetables starting to produce lovely produce. It’s so wonderful that you never want it to end, and although as the length of day is starting to shorted slowly, you can still help things to keep going.

Flowers will always respond well to the effort of deadheading and stopping them going to seed. That way they will produce more flowers in an effort to get to the end result of producing more seed. That way you’ll get a longer display. It’s easy to assume that plants are happy growing in their pots, or containers or even their beds, however they soon use up the nutrients around them and can suffer as a result. It’s a good idea to boost this by using a liquid feed, or a top dressing of decent compost. After the really wet weather at the beginning of the year a lot of nutrients were simply washed down through the soil, so any extra boost will be welcome The same applies with fruit and vegetables. Keep picking them at the right time and they will keep trying to produce more. The same holds true more than ever with boosting them as they put a tremendous effort into producing the vegetables. This is especially true with plants such as tomatoes, and especially when they are in grow bags. Make sure you regularly feed them as they will get through the nutrients in the bag very quickly. As a further tip, it’s never a bad idea to put a grow bag on top of another one when you first set them up, to get double the depth and goodness from the. It also helps to hold the water better. Keep sowing seeds such as salads, radishes etc as they will grow rapidly and keep producing fresh supplies for you to enjoy. Once anything has got past its best, make sure to compost it as it will all give a good added boost to the compost heap. Despite the fact the lawn will be producing plenty of cuttings at this time of year, don’t be tempted to smoother the compost heap in them, to get rid of them, as they will stifle what is in the bin already, and remember to turn the compost well regularly. As most of us will be looking towards holidays at this time of year, make sure you plan looking after the garden, whilst you are away, getting a neighbour in to help keep on top of things, to avoid coming back to a jungle or a barren waste land. At this time of year there really is no excuse not to be out in the garden on the long summer evenings, and if you even spend a few minutes each evening whilst out there doing a few jobs you really will keep the garden looking better for longer, so give it a go and enjoy it. Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

When could a Physiotherapist help?

There are a number of different reasons why you may suffer with a headache, some of which can be quite serious, and a specialist referral may be required. Some of the triggers for headaches, which a Physiotherapist may be able to treat, are: • After an Road Traffic Accident (RTA), where strained muscles of the neck, can cause radiating headaches • Tension headaches, for example from sitting at a computer screen for long periods of pain • Headaches caused through poor posture • Headaches caused through stress/worry

How can a physiotherapist treat your headache?

• Through deep tissue massage, we can relax tense or strained muscles that may contribute to a radiating headache. • Acupuncture techniques can be very effective for treating headaches, via releasing energy in common points in the body. • Physiotherapy can also help to identify and treat stiffness in joints of the upper back and neck, which may cause muscle tension. • Advice and education about posture can have a huge impact on joint stiffness and muscle tension, which can affect headaches. • Advice about what affects, sleeping position can have on the neck and how to address them. There will be times when your headache may not be caused by the triggers above, and may be more serious in nature. If you are in any doubt, it is always best to consult with your doctor, who can refer you to a specialist, if further investigation is necessary. If you would like to discuss any issues you may have, please feel free to contact me on 01273 467614 or email: info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

Wills & LPAs: Planning Ahead for Peace of Mind

AVE YOU EVER worried about who will care for your spouse or partner, children, parents or pets after you die. Perhaps you have been troubled by what will happen to your belongings or home after you have gone? One method of guaranteeing surety and peace of mind for the future is by making a Will. A will gives you the power to decide how your loved ones are

provided for and how your estate, including your belongings, money and your house, are dealt with after your death. At QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke, we have seen many instances of distress and hardship caused by the lack of a Will. Regardless of whether you are single, married or in a civil partnership, have children or other dependents, a small or large estate, live abroad, own property overseas, hold a share in a business, have re-married or are in a second relationship, a Will can hold vital importance on administering someone’s estate on their death. Do you sometimes consider who will look after you in your old age or perhaps consider where you might be living and who might be helping you make decisions? Have you considered who might be making them for you, on matters involving money and medication? Another way of helping to plan a secure and stress-free future is by making Lasting Powers of Attorney. If in the future you become unable to understand or deal with your own affairs, you would need someone you can trust and rely on to make important decisions for you. They would be your attorney. Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are available in two different types: Property & Financial Affairs and Health & Welfare. A Property & Finance LPA would give your attorney the authority to access your bank account to pay bills, collecting your pension or benefits, making investments, and the ability the sell your house or other assets on your behalf. A Health & Welfare LPA permits your attorney the power to

decide your day-day care arrangements if you can no longer care for yourself, to include where you live, how you should dress, what you eat, what you like to do. If you wish, this can include giving your attorney the power to accept or refuse lifesustaining treatment on your behalf. Right now could also be a better time to act because as from April this year, the fees for applying for LPAs were reduced from £110 to £82, and for re-submitting an LPA for registration from £55 to £41.

How then can I and my colleagues at QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke help you?

We can help you write a Will that will ensure that your decisions and wishes are recorded clearly and concisely, so that the people and organisations that you care for most are provided for after your death. We can assist in the preparation and registration of Lasting Powers of Attorney so that you are looked after and your affairs dealt with, in accordance with your preferences and wishes, if you are unable to care for yourself and your affairs in the future. We offer fixed fee services for standard Wills and LPAs that can cater to whatever it is you need. If you and your spouse or partner want to make provisions for the future, we offer a reduced rate on both Wills and LPAs if you come in together. Consultant ophthalmologist, Mr Masoud Teimory, said: “Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands will offer access to some of the best ophthalmic assessment and surgical facilities in the country, matching our other excellent facility at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester. “We are confident that the impressive range of clinical skills, combined with the latest technology and clinical facilities, together with our ambitions for training future surgeons, will propel Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands as a new clinical centre of excellence in the UK.” The state-of-the-art building has been designed to be accessibility friendly and is all at ground level. The eye unit has its own main entrance on the west side of Southlands Hospital, with access off the Upper Brighton Road (A270). The first phase of works to increase the number of car parking spaces available at Southlands Hospital has been completed and works are continuing in a phased way to deliver a 60% increase in the total number of spaces by December 2017. As Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands opens, the Ophthalmology

Department at Worthing Hospital closes and relocates to Shoreham. From 23 June, eye care clinics and operations will no longer take place at Worthing Hospital, but patients can ask to be treated at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, if they prefer. Mr Teimory said: “Moving our ophthalmology service from Worthing Hospital to more spacious and modern surroundings at Southlands Hospital provides our patients with a more comfortable experience, as well as enhanced clinical care. “For example, the special design of the building enables us to provide ‘one stop’ clinics for thousands of patients with cataracts, glaucoma and agerelated macular degeneration – thus avoiding multiple visits to hospital for our patients.” Western Sussex Eye Eare | Southlands is by appointment only, however, patients requiring hospital treatment can ask their optician or GP to refer them to Southlands Hospital. Patients needing emergency eye care for a serious injury or eye condition should attend their nearest Accident & Emergency department.

THE LIONS ROARED AND THE DONKEYS THUNDERED!

W

HAT A FANTASTIC day out for all the family at Adur East Lions’ annual Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally on 4 June. It was like Goldilocks and the Three Bears: the weather wasn’t too hot or too cold, in fact everything was just right. There were more classic vehicles than in recent years and a record 269 children enjoyed a donkey ride. The weather made all the difference in terms of the profit — £1000 increase on last year. Lion President Rose Carter said “We are not like many other charities as every penny of the £5660+ profit goes back out to charitable causes and service activities. We owe many thanks to all those who helped us.” Of course, not everyone is able to support the Lions in this way and so there is another way to support them in their community activities. The Adur East Lions Supporters (200) Club helps the Lions by providing them with much needed funds to support those in need in the local community. Membership of the 200 Club is by application and costs just £20 per year. This entitles the member to a unique number (1 to 200) which is entered into a monthly cash prize draw with chances to

win £30, £15 or £10. In addition members are invited to join the Lions at the 200 Club Annual Buffet in September, where as well as the monthly draw, 200 club members have the chance to win an additional Grand Prize of £1000. A second £1000 Grand Prize draw is held in the Spring so you have 2 chances (at the amazing odds of 200-1) to win the top prize. This year the surplus funds (after paying out prize money) helped towards funding the following groups in our local area: Rain jackets for the young players of

Southwick Rangers FC, an afternoon tea with entertainment for some 70 elderly and lonely residents, and Flags for the Shoreham Rainbows. There are just a few vacancies left in the 200 club so if you would like to support Adur East Lions Club and join the 200 Club so that more needy causes in the community can be helped then please download an application form from the website, www.adureastlions.org.uk or call 0845 833 7356.

ADUR EAST LIONS CLUB: LIONS E-CLUBHOUSE The Adur East Lions Club is a part of Lions Clubs International, a network of volunteers who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Another service activity Lions all over the country are involved in is providing ‘Message in a Bottle’ containers to people who are on medication and who may have cause to call for emergency medical help at home. Basic personal and medical details are kept in a small plastic bottle in the fridge and a sticker is placed on the fridge and on the inside of the front door so that emergency services will know where to find the information. If you would like one of these containers or know somebody who would why not come along to the Manor Cottage in Southwick any Saturday in July and pick one up from Jasper! www.adureastlions.org.uk

COULD YOU OFFER MORE THAN A ROOM? Most residents in Brighton & Hove are familiar with the lack of housing in the city. While the majority of people find somewhere safe to live, the same can’t always be said of those who are homeless or leaving care. The children’s charity Barnardo’s and a number of Brighton & Hove residents are offering these young people an alternative option with their Supported Lodgings scheme. The scheme was started in 2015 with the aim of supporting young people who may be homeless or leaving the care system. In recent months, this has expanded in order lodgings for an increasing number of refugees and asylum seekers. Together with Barnardo’s, hosts offer a room in their home to help each vulnerable young person make a smooth transition into independent living. Lyn Lynch, a Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings host said “There are lots of expectations on this generation

and not all of them are helpful. We can show these young people that they are important and valued. They can have their own goals and expectations and can make a difference in the world”. Barnardo’s are looking for individuals or families to open their doors and provide safe and secure homes for 16 to 21 year-olds. Hosts receive round-theclock assistance, a dedicated key worker, a comprehensive training programme and an allowance of £150 per week. Hosts come from a variety of backgrounds. Some work full-time, some work part-time and some are retired. All

Formerly “PCSkillsonwheels”

have spare time to offer emotional care and practical advice to help a young person build their confidence. Olly Davidson, service manager, said, “Brighton and Hove is a special city full of generous spirited people. We are pleased to be working with some of these amazing people to help provide a new home for some of the city’s most vulnerable young people who don’t have anywhere else to go”. For more information about becoming a Supported Lodgings host, call 01273 412010 or email brightonlodgings@ barnardos.org.uk

VERRUCAE

Karen Burrett and Gaynor Platt, our podiatrists at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea discuss the common problem of verrucae. Verrucae are warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet. They can even be found around the edges of the nails. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal changing/showering areas. An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up the virus. Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin. Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone. Some individuals are more susceptible than others. The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots. These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained. Karen or Gaynor will be able to advise you on a variety of treatments that are available both within the clinical setting and/or for you to try at home. Further advice will also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future. If you suspect you have a verrucae or indeed any other foot problem call us on 01273 455080 for an appointment, email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
