AUGUST 2012
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to August edition of the Inside Shoreham
hope that August is a hot month full of beautiful sunshine. West
Southwick Magazine.
Sussex Trust has some great events for kids on page four.
We have seen the torch go through Lancing and Brighton. Did you get to see it? I think it was a great idea to go around the UK to get everyone into the ‘Games Spirit’ up to the launch of the Greatest Games ever – Olympics 2012 in London. Of course the weather for the past few months has not been inspiring and uplifting for many of us who enjoy the warmth of the sun. Summer has been a bit of a wet one so far! It has been good for the plants and the allotments, but with school breaking up there is only so much indoor things you can go to. So let’s
This month we have a good read from Judy Upton, all about how Shoreham and Southwick actually got their names. And of course, our latest from Mark Oakley on gardening at this time of year and all the local events on our Whats On section. We hope that you have a fantastic August and that it is full of sunshine! Deadline for the September edition is the 12th Aug. See you in September. Warm regards, Angela

Worthing's pool's Fascinating Facts about….bats new name: If we’re lucky Splashpoint!
‘S
plashpoint’ is the name for Worthing’s brand new £17.5m pool. The name was jointly chosen by sisters Caitlin (8) and Lois (6) Hedger who live in Durrington and attend Durrington First School in Worthing. “They learnt to swim at the Aquarena and can’t wait for the new pool to open” says mum, Vicky Hedger, “They were so excited about entering the pool naming competition and decided to enter ‘Splashpoint’. Their inspiration came from their love of roller skating at Splash Point nearby and splashing around in the pool. Each time they go for a lesson in the old pool they always take a keen interest in how much the new pool has grown next door!” The sisters each get one year Fit4 membership worth over £500! The new pool will replace the 1960’s Aquarena and is planned to open early summer 2013. Award winning architects Wilkinson Ayre designed the structure and contractors Morgan Sindall are building it. 4
enough to enjoy some warm summer nights, bats are now fully active, feeding and raising their young. These flying stars of the night are easy to see around dusk and before dawn as they emerge from their roosts to feast on thousands of insects. • There are 18 different types of bat in the UK – all found in the south of England. They range from the tiny pipistrelle, weighing less than a one pound coin, to the larger noctule bat with a wing span of over 30 centimetres • Some bats have adapted to city living, swapping traditional roosting sites in tree holes or caves for small crevices in buildings and roof spaces • They give birth during the summer with the young bat literally hooking onto the mother’s nipple with curved milk teeth • They locate their prey by echo-location, a sophisticated form of hunting. They emit a high frequency sound and listen for the returning echo to distinguish their surroundings and insects • The phrase ‘as blind as a bat’ is wrong. Bats can see perfectly well, although not in full colour, and probably better than humans at dusk If you would like to tell Sussex Wildlife Trust about the nature you see please visit the wildlife advice pages on our website www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Put your finances back on track I
f you are struggling financially then now is the time to face up to your finances. If your credit cards make unpleasant reading, and you are worried about your post arriving, don’t put your head in the sand, take some advice now. Many people find summer a very expensive time of year. If you have children you will probably be entertaining them, this is not cheap. You may have been on holiday and splashed out more than expected. Whatever your circumstances, now is a great time to review your finances. Don’t leave it another month or two, you will have Christmas to think about! The first thing you should do is list out everything you owe and the rates you are paying. You should write down how much you pay each month and add this to monthly outgoings for utility bills, childcare, travel and any other regular expenses. Once you have done this you will have a realistic view of where your money is going. Armed with this information, you should seek the advice of an independent financial adviser. Your adviser will be able to look at all of this in a practical financial sense. They will be able to suggest ways of reducing your outgoings (if this is your problem), and getting you back on track to financial security.
some time to come meaning a more secure rate for you. If total security and confirmed payments are what you are looking for, perhaps one of the fixed rates may suit. When you look at remortgaging, it is vital that you speak to an independent adviser, one who has access to the whole marketplace. There are so many deals available, it is important to find the right one for you. Your adviser will have access to all of the best deals at the touch of a button. At Talk Money we offer a free initial consultation. Please feel free to call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667, I would be very happy to help. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
Take a remortgage with free legals and no upfront fees Remortgage to save money
There are some fantastic deals available at the moment for remortgaging. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much you could save each month. Why throw money down the drain and stay with your existing lender? Many remortgage deals have no upfront fees, so don’t think you have to pay money upfront. Also, many cover the cost of the legal work and valuation. In recent times, many people have remained on their lenders’ standard variable rate. Some of these have recently increased, even though Bank of England has kept the underlying rate on hold at 0.5%. Staying on your lenders’ variable rate puts you in their hands. They decide what to charge you and can increase if they feel this is required. A tracker rate may be a better option, this would track the Bank of England rate. Predictions are that this will remain low for 6

The August Garden H
eading into August and as July peters out its pretty much been the same story for the summer so far, which has been a wash out. Four months ago I writing about what to do with the hosepipe ban looming and the high risk of drought and all we seem to have had is rain since then, with limited sunlight. We can only hope the tail end of summer will be better. For many the summer has been a disappointment in the garden due to the prolonged wet weather. Seeds have struggled to start off, getting waterlogged before they could start, and many plants and flowers have been battered by the rain. With the limited light many plants haven’t flowered at all. Nature is a great leveler as this summer has proved and despite our doom and gloom it has had a positive effect on many aspects of the garden as well. Many shrubs and trees will have had a welcome boost from the wet weather, as will lawns, giving many the chance to have a long period of sustained growth in the warmer wet weather. The rain can have a leeching effect on the nutrients in the soil, washing many of them through the soil away from the plants roots, so give plants a boost with plant food. If it’s dry (a big if!) then use a liquid feed as these get to work straight away, however if we are still experiencing this wet weather then a good topping of compost or some slow release tablets will fare better. Any plants that are in pots or containers will benefit from having the top few inches of compost removed and 8
having it replaced with fresh. One thing in the garden that has run riot with the hot damp weather has been the weeds, so you really need to keep on top of them as once they take a hold and set seed you have a job for life controlling them. When the ground has been wet it’s quite an easy task to pull the weeds out whole and a big area can be satisfyingly cleared very quickly. From a long term point of view its worth noticing in the bad weather where problems with drainage have been. If there have been areas on the lawn these can usually be rectified quite quickly by aerating the ground using a fork. If you have areas of beds that consistently flood then fork the ground over and mix some grit and bulky compost in to help with the drainage. Check pots and containers as well as the soil in these can get quite compacted over time, and the plants roots end up sitting in a pot of really wet compost, which can easily damage its roots and the plant. A lot of vegetables have struggled to produce decent size crops due to the lack of flying insects to pollinate the flowers. Courgettes and cucumbers have suffered quite badly with this. You can help nature along quite easily by using a small paintbrush to transfer the pollen between flowers, which will have the same effect and should get things going! If it has been a wash out in your garden, don’t get too despondent, as I said nature has a way of balancing things. The heavy rainfall will mean that all the plants will have had a stress free summer and
the chance to really establish themselves, giving a much better and healthier plant ready for next year. You never know we may even get an Indian summer and the chance of some late glory in the garden. Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

How Shoreham, Southwick and Kingston got it's names The town now known at Shoreham-by-Sea began its development as a tiny settlement at what was to become Old Shoreham. At that time it was just inland from the mouth of the river Adur, and the natural harbour was close to where the Old Toll Bridge is now. Shoreham derives its name from the words ‘scora ham’, which is the Saxon description meaning a settlement at a steep place. Intriguingly, it has nothing to do with the sea ‘shore’ what so ever. The settlement had previously been a Roman ferry terminal before AElla of the South Saxons, his sons and army landed here in AD 477. The Saxons were not immediately welcomed into our region. History recalls Wlencing’s warriors fighting a battle with the local Romanised Britons on Slonk Hill, to the north and east of Shoreham. The word ‘Slonk’ is related to the Saxon word ‘slaught’ as in ‘onslaught’ and it is believed that many Britons and Saxons were slain on the Downs as Wlencing sought to gain control of the region. Thunders-barrow, another hill in the South Downs near to our area may have been used by the Saxons to offer sacrifices to Thor, the God of Thunder, before they became a Christian people. By 1073, the town was being called Sorham, then in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was referred to as Soresham, which then became Soreham and in 1167, Shorham. After the Norman Conquest, Old Shoreham was a major port, until the river Adur began to silt up at this point. The terms Old and New Shoreham came into use in the 13th century as a new settlement grew up, following the harbour as it migrated west. The name of settlement was also still changing. In an Assize Roll of 1263 there was a mention of Great Schorham and a few years later, of Little Schorham. The ‘Little’ Schorham was new Shoreham, which at this time was smaller than the established Old Shoreham. Later Old Shoreham is referred to as Eldsorham and the new town as Nova Shorham or Neushorham, and in 1288 Nywe Shorham. In 1457 Shoreham is mentioned as the ‘Porte of Hulkesmouth alias Shorham’ which it is believed is a reference to an alternative name, derived from the wreck of
10
a ship or hulk, at the harbour’s mouth. The port’s seal bears an image of such a wreck. In 1302 there is also a mention of a ferry ‘across the water of Hulkesmouth’ suggesting this alternative name for New Shoreham remained in usage for some time. Southwick was another Saxon settlement. Its name derives from ‘suo wic’ meaning the south farm. It could be that it was the southern ‘wick’ or farm of the manor of Kingston-by-Sea, which was a prominent waterside settlement at this time. During the Roman age, there was a substantial villa at Southwick, just north of what is now Manor Hall Road. It rivalled those of Fishbourne and Bignor for size and grandeur, and was occupied from the late 1st to the mid 4th centuries AD. The Roman villa was probably part of a farm and would have been home to a wealthy landowner and his family. The site would have been chosen because of its position close to the sea, for trade with the Roman Empire, and also because of the surrounding rich agricultural soil. During Norman times, in 1073 there is the first official mention of the settlement occupying this area as Sudewic. By 1273 this has become Suthewick, and in 1675 it was mentioned as simply ‘Week’. Kingston-by-Sea, gained the ‘king’ in its name by being a royal Saxon manor or ‘cyninges tun’. Kingston was always a village separate from Shoreham and Southwick, but today only the church, rectory and manor remain. It was Kingston’s closeness to the sea that made it an important settlement in Saxon times. By the time of the writing of the Domesday Book, the name has evolved into Chingestune. St. Julian’s Church, Kingston, dates from around 1050 and is also mentioned in the Domeday Book. In Norman times Kingston first gained the additional word ‘Bowsey’, or ‘Busci’ to its name, after Robert de Busci, a Norman lord who was granted this manor in 1199. The name went through further changes, becoming in 1315 Kyngeston Bouci, and Kyngeston Bowsey in 1608. Judy Upton

Pooch paradise A
my and Jane Hatcher must have thought long and hard about franchising before taking the risk of putting the well-established and highlyregarded reputation of Doodley Dogs on the line; but, a mere six months later, they must be thrilled that they did so. Their first franchisees, Leon and Matt, have taken Shoreham’s centre to a new level of canine care. Saturday, November, 12th 2011 was launch day for Doodley Dogs at Shoreham, when dog lovers in the area were invited to this super-centre to see for themselves what was on offer. It was a huge success with an additional frisson of excitement at the arrival of Choccywoccydoodah’s phenomenal chocolate 'doggy cake'. Further endorsement from this acclaimed Brighton confectioner can be seen on the UK Good Food's Channel, at 9pm on July 3rd, when Doodley Dogs Shoreham features on 'Choccywoccydooda', series three, with its episode of 'Four-legged Friends'. However, to return to where it all began. Picture the scene: Opening day, Monday, 14th November saw four dogs coming through the doors; Tuesday, four dogs and one hydrotherapy client; now, six months on, the Day Care facility is averaging 35 dogs per day, with over
16
200 on the books; a number which increases to 400 once hydrotherapy clients are taken into account. This day-care arena has had a full make-over of funky-edgy artwork, superb new flooring, fun-tyres, houses and ramps…this is a play-park in poochparadise! However, that is not meant to demean this facility. On the contrary, these dogs learn how to behave socially within a pack environment; and there are even 'day rooms' for some animals needing the occasional 'time-out'. Recently, a puppy crèche has been opened, complete with ball-park and caterpillar run: a safe environment for the younger and smaller four-legged friends. These guys just keep coming up with brilliant, new ideas to cater for all ages, stages and abilities of the dogs in their care. Under the tutelage of Amy Hatcher, Matt has been trained to take puppy classes and obedience classes, in keeping with the high standard set by the original Doodley Dogs; and these have been hugely successful, now running twice a week. It is so obvious that Matt is in his element in this role and the owners trust him, implicitly. A real bonus for Shoreham is the Canine Hydrotherapy Suite which is used for injury rehabilitation therapy,
fun swims or simply introducing puppies to water. Leon is NARCH registered and vets in the area are confident in his ability and knowledge when they refer dogs to him for appropriate treatment. His own caring nature – balanced with his total professionalism – puts both the dogs and their owners at complete ease. At now over 40 swims a week, the success of this venture is all too evident! It has been called a 'super centre' and boasts that there is everything under 'one woof'. This is no exaggeration: upmarket toys and accessories; the Pet Head range of shampoos and cleaners; specialist, quality treats; totally natural food ranges…they’re all there…and, on 1st July, there was a resident groomer on site with purpose-built showers and baths… and décor totally in keeping with the rest of the unit. However, the pièce de résistance has to be the boutique hotel for dogs. You may smile, but let me tell you, there are, already, 'guests' booked in every night until mid September. I’d advise you to check out the website for images of these rooms: they must be seen to be believed. Never again will you feel guilty about going away on holiday and leaving your dog behind! This place is vibrant. There is such fluidity of colours and theme running throughout what was once a dull, grey factory building: this is a far cry from kennels! The flexibility of day care and boarding make it so attractive. Dog owners can be spontaneous, rather than having to plan and book weeks ahead and be held to exact times and dates. Yet, it has to be said, that all the funky, flexible facilities in the world would not – on their own - have made this such a success; the personalities of the two guys at the helm are what make the place what it is. Leon and Matt are so relaxed and at home in their surroundings that their warmth and enthusiasm are felt by owners and dogs alike. Their own pets, Scooby and Lulu, are such a great advert for the place; and they reflect how well this environment is suited to these animals. The canine fraternity in Sussex must be wondering…what next for Doodley Dogs at Shoreham? Whatever it is, you can be sure it will be exciting. To come full circle, Amy and Jane’s risk has been worth it. The Doodley Dogs’ brand is in very safe hands with these guys. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Sport your best feet in 2012!
T
his is the year when many people will be inspired to get active and dig out their sports shoes. But while exercise and sport offer undoubted benefits, it’s vital to look after your feet.
22
As part of The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists annual Feet for Life Month back in June, Karen Burrett, our podiatrist here at First Foot Clinic is raising awareness of the importance of
foot care in sports. When you run, your body weight is multiplied by up to seven times, with your feet bearing the brunt of this stress at every stride. The demands made on feet and lower limbs can lead to a range of injuries, including blisters, sprained ankles, torn ligaments, shin pain, knee pain, and joint and muscle problems. The good news is, there are lots of things you can do to help prevent foot problems and there are ways to treat them too. Karen says: “Exercise is essential for good health, but sport can put a lot of pressure on your knees, hips, back, neck and feet. When we play different types of sport we use our body and our feet in different ways. It’s therefore vital to wear a sports shoe designed to support your body’s movement for that particular sport. Incorporate stretches into your warm up and cool down to keep you comfortably on track to reach your sports and fitness goals.” So whether walking, dancing or pounding the pavements is the choice of exercise for 2012, First Foot Clinic offers a variety of treatments and advice to help keep your feet fighting fit. So this July, why not come in to see Karen and have a foot health check? You can also book an appointment by calling us on 01273 455080, email us at email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or visit our website at www.firstfootclinic.co.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065

Indoor Bowls A
dur possesses arguably the best indoor bowling club in the South of England. It boasts national and county champions. It addition to its magnificent 8 rinks it has a restaurant, bar and comfortable lounge facilities. Despite this it is perhaps Adur’s best kept sporting secret. “Whenever newcomers look in they are staggered by the quality of the club”, said chairman Barry Ward. “We pride ourselves on being a friendly welcoming club. The most common comment from new members is “I wish I had joined years ago”. Adur Indoor Bowling Club is located next to the Impulse Leisure Centre in Old Barn Way, Southwick. It has over 500 members and is open from 9am to 10 pm every day in the season. It remains open during weekdays in the summer. There is ample free parking, good changing facilities and a range of regular sessions throughout the week to suit beginners to the most competitive of players.

“Unfairly bowls has an image of being only for the retired” said Ladies Captain Carol Fennell , “ but this is simply not true. Two of our best female players are in their 20’s and 30’s, and one of the club’s youngest members Jack Fairhall won through to this year’s national championships and he is aged 16 years. It is a sport for all ages 9 to 90 years.” This September the club is launching a recruitment campaign to encourage more people to take up indoor bowling. There will be free introductory sessions at 10 am every Saturday morning in September and October. Organiser of the sessions, Ken Twine said “ We’ll provide all the gear free of charge. They are drop in sessions for total beginners and more experienced players alike. I know some people are nervous about giving bowls a try for the first time but we have all been there and I promise everyone will have fun”. New members will get free introductory sessions before they need to decide on whether they want to join. Anyone interested in finding out more can rink the club on 01273-870670 (weekday mornings in the summer 10am to 1pm).
