BEACH FIT GYM IN TOUGH MUDDER CHALLENGE
A
team of members of Shoreham’s Beach Fit Gym recently completed the Tough Mudder challenge in aid of Shoreham Swiss Gardens schoolboy Samuel Elliot. 10 year old Samuel has Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, a rare muscle weakening condition which only affects boys and decreases independent mobility and means Samuel now requires a wheelchair for his day-to-day life. Tough Mudder challenges are hardcore obstacle courses designed by Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, determination, and camaraderie. For four hours they completed a 12-mile mud run, punctuated with 32 militarystyle obstacles. They fought through fire, plunged into icy water, scaled 12ft walls, crawled through underground mud tunnels and under dangling wires charged with 10,000 volts of electricity. Not for the faint hearted that’s for sure. The Beach Fit team completed the Tough Mudder challenge and by doing so they raised over £500 towards an Etac Balder powered wheelchair for Samuel. Beach fit’s next challenge is a 24 hr bike-a-thon to raise money for other equipment Samuel needs and they are planning on other challenges over the next year to raise money for other disabled children in the area. If you are interested in taking part in any of Beach Fits upcoming challenges to raise money for Samuel contact Paul Crane at the Beach Fit gym, Or if you would like to assist in donating we would be grateful by simply logging in to www.justgiving.com/Beachfit

hether it’s raining ‘cats and dogs’ or we’re in the middle of a summer heat wave, the British weather is always a hot topic of conversation. To celebrate our ever-changing weather, Sussex Wildlife Trust is looking for 12 beautiful wildlife photographs to create an online calendar for 2014. The theme of this year’s photography competition is ‘Rain or Shine,’ so if you’re a budding photographer or a more experienced snapper, why not enter your best images capturing the effect of the weather on the wildlife and landscapes of Sussex - either in rain, sun, wind or snow. In addition to the online calendar, the overall winning image will feature in Wildlife, the Trust’s members’ magazine, in our monthly e-newsletter and on our website. The first prize is £150 kindly donated by The Ecology Consultancy. Runner-up prize is a wildlife photography day course run by David Plummer photography and third prize is a selection of wildlife photography books worth over £45. The closing date for entries is 10 September 2013. Participants can enter up to three images but they must be in landscape format only and feature wildlife images taken in Sussex.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Is it un-British to insure your health? I
n other countries, it is a matter of course to insure your own health. People take insurance to cover consultations, hospital fees and drugs. In this country, most of us rely on the NHS. We are proud of it, everyone has access to medical care, rich or poor. But we all know our NHS has problems, it is underfunded and cuts are being made. Waiting times are getting longer, access is more limited and our nearest hospitals are getting further and further away. A&E departments are over-run because people don’t know where to go for help out of hours. Our aging population will put an ever increasing strain on resources — the prognosis is not good. With all this in mind, what can we do? Should we insure ourselves? I personally took some private medical cover this week. I must say, I am finding it difficult to write about it. I want to be positive, but I am actually feeling what a lot of people may feel; guilt that if something happens to me, I may be able to bypass the waiting list and be dealt with quicker. Guilt that if I ever need an expensive drug, I may get it, but someone else may not. Is this a British thing? Does this stem from our core beliefs in the NHS? Would we prefer the old person to be seen first, or the child to get the drugs? It’s an interesting question. Is guilt one of the reasons why people in this country, even when they can afford it, don’t insure themselves? I must say, mixed with my feelings above, I can also confirm a sense of relief that if some terrible illness befalls me, I will get treated quickly and efficiently. Also, that I have a doctor on the end of a line 24 hours a day should I need to speak to one. Is this selfish and un-British? I don’t know. We all know that in this world, we have to look after ourselves in whatever way we can. Perhaps we would feel more comfortable if we were insuring our loved ones rather than ourselves, less selfish perhaps? Anyway, it doesn’t take a genius to work out where things are going. It would seem to me that as we all become more of a financial burden on the NHS, at some point we will need to be paying more for it. Will the government make us insure ourselves at some point in the future? Will the government offer us tax incentives to do so? Will it be mandatory, and will they tax us more to pay for it? 6
Who knows, all I know is that to insure yourself is perhaps a wise thing to do, if you are able to. We insure our animals, we insure our possessions, but what price to pay for our health and wellbeing? If you would like independent advice on Private Medical Insurance, or any other financial matter, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to help.

The Sussex Pad
T
he first record of an inn called the Sussex Pad was in 1778, but there are earlier references to ale houses that might well also refer to it. A group of houses are referred to as 'Padd' in 1698, and there is a record of ‘the Pad house’ in 1753. It is also known that there was a causeway from the inn to the ferry to Shoreham in the 1700s, which by 1758 was known as the padway. It was constructed of wooden faggots known as ‘pads’ that were sunk into the marshy ground. This padway later led to the wooden bridge between Lancing and Old Shoreham, which eventually replaced the ferry. Alternatively the name Sussex Pad could have derived from the pads carried by the packhorses that crossed the river near this point at low tide. At this time the river Adur was navigable by large ships even this far north, which was then still part of the estuary. How legal the goods carried by some of the packhorses were, we can only speculate, but the isolated position of the Sussex Pad meant it was believed to be a major centre for smuggling operations in the 1700s. The inn had large cellars and other hiding places, very convenient for those wanting to store contraband such as brandy and tea, ready to distribute north via the Shoreham Gap. In 1784 the dragoons who were tasked with preventing the movement of contraband got into a fight with a group of smugglers near the Sussex Pad. Their leader Mr Hubbard had his horse captured and had to wade into the river until he was up to his neck in order to escape. In 1789 the Lancing Society for Prosecuting Felons met at the inn, which perhaps made it less popular for a time with those involved in smuggling. There are stories of a witch living near to the Sussex Pad. She
8
is said to have cast enchantments in order to stop carters from moving their wagons. The wagon-owners countered the spell by running their knife blades around their iron-rimmed wheels, supposedly making the witch howl in pain. A nearby pond also had magical qualities, according to local superstitions. It was an example of a bottomless pond or Knucker Hole in which people or objects could disappear forever. A Knucker Hole, and there are several in Sussex, was supposed to never freeze over and was reputed to be home to sleeping dragons. An Act of Parliament in 1781 allowed for the building of what is now known as the Old Toll Bridge to connect Old Shoreham with Lancing. This was because the ancient ferry was now decreed to be too dangerous. The bridge took ten months to build and with crossing the river now a safer proposition, stories of witches and the fear of the fathomless Knucker Hole declined. The Sussex Pad was now on an important East-West route by road and it became well known as a coaching inn. From 1814, horses and post chaises could be hired at the inn, and the horse drawn coaches from Brighton to Bath and Bristol passed by on their regular route. Mail coaches too passed by the Sussex Pad as they took the morning letters from Brighton to Worthing. Speed was everything where coaches delivering mail and passengers were concerned. In 1815 there was an accident near the Sussex Pad in which two coaches had been racing each other. A man was killed and the inquest heard how one of the coachmen had been ordered, “to get in first, though he should lose a horse.” The Sussex Pad was the meeting place for the Lancing Parish Friendly Society between 1800 and 1856. Friendly societies were an early form of insurance company or building society. At this time it is recorded that this one had between 60 and 80 members. Cricket matches were also played outside the inn in the 1800s. In 1850, Nathaniel Woodard, the founder of Lancing College, acquired the lease to the Sussex Pad. He did so, to improve its reputation so as to protect the morals of his school’s pupils. Later Lancing College acquired the pub’s freehold too. A fire destroyed the original Sussex Pad in 1905. It was rebuilt in 1906, and this building is the Sussex Pad public house that we know today. Recently the pub has closed its doors and the building is now once more in the hands of Lancing College. At present it is not entirely clear what the future for this building may be. By Judy Upton

At last…summer arrived A
s I sit here writing this article I have the fan on full pelt, the windows open and it’s still like a sauna. At last summer seems to have arrived and hopefully by the time you read this it won’t have descended into the usual pitiful damp excuse for a summer we endure. As much as we enjoy the hot weather it does bring its own problems, especially with the watering and the effect it can have on some plants. The temptation is to get out and blast everything with the hose pipe or flood it with the watering can.
10
Whilst it sounds like a good idea, seeing as we don’t have a shortage of water thanks to last year, it’s worth remembering that now most of us are on a water meter, and it can get expensive, as well as time consuming. Be selective with what you water and more importantly when you water it. Early in the morning and late in the evening is always a better time as it allows the water to soak in and do its job, before too much is lost with evaporation from the sun. There is also a school of thought that the water droplets can act like a magnifying glass in the full sun leading to the leaves on some plants getting scorched. Have a look at the plants you need to water. Many established shrubs will be perfectly fine with a minimal amount of water, as will trees as there root systems are so large and deep in the ground. Many plants with glossy leaves are better able to withstand the warmer temperatures as the water does not evaporate so quickly out of the leaves. You should really concentrate on tender plants such as bedding plants and vegetables, but don’t worry too much about root vegetables such as carrots and parsnips. The more tender plants will drink up the water but have difficulty holding on to it, leading to wilting if they are left too long. Many plants will bounce back if you miss the days watering, but it can do damage and certainly slow down its growth and the production of any flower display or vegetable crop Don’t worry too much about watering the grass as they are very resilient to dry weather and will soon bounce back at the first sign of rain. One of the biggest problems in this weather is the plants in the greenhouse. The heat can build rapidly causing plants to die very quickly, if they haven’t been watered. If your greenhouse doesn’t have an automatic vent then open a window or leave the door open, to help keep the temperature down and increase the ventilation. There are some advantages to having to water the garden. The good weather means that at least you can stand and enjoy the sight of what’s growing and gives you a reason to slow down in the evening for a short while to take it all in. I just hope the weather stays for long enough to make up for last year’s poor summer Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065

New safety camera vans roll out across Sussex A
s part of a planned fleet upgrade, the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) is replacing the vans used by Safety Camera Technicians from Monday 3rd June 2013. The new vans are slightly larger than the vehicles previously used and are fitted with windows in the side and rear doors, allowing Technicians to operate mobile speed detection equipment from within the vehicle. This will allow a greater level of speed enforcement to be carried out in inclement weather since the equipment will be more protected from the elements. The high visibility vehicles carry the well-recognised Safety Camera symbols, and are used to service fixed speed and red-light cameras across Sussex as well undertaking mobile speed checks at established locations. Details of the regular sites used can be found on our website. The vehicles are also used to support Roads and Neighbourhood policing team in special operations often following requests for action from local communities. The fleet being replaced will be decommissioned over the coming months, with a number of the vehicles being reliveried and used by partners in road safety educational work across the county. The cost of replacing the fleet has been met through the monies resulting from the Speed Awareness Course, not the
12
Sussex taxpayer. Phil Henty, Operations Manager for the SSRP, comments: “The existing fleet of vehicles has served us well over the past seven years, and we extended the fleet's lifespan to ensure that we got even greater value from the original investment by the Department for Transport. “By replacing the older vehicles, we can continue to offer a high quality and highly visible speed enforcement operation to the communities of Sussex, helping to making our roads safer for all users.”

Shoreham Airshow flies again 31st August - 1st September 2013

ith major new sponsors on board, this year’s Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Shoreham Airshow, which is being held at Shoreham Airport on August 31st and September 1st, promises exciting changes. Their 'Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Dambusters Raid' will see the RAF Lancaster flying both days. Wing Commander David Arthurton who is Officer Commanding 617 Squadron, which carried out the raid, will be their Patron and will be attending along with the Chief of the Air Staff. Some of the surviving aircrew have also promised to attend and will be there to meet the public and do some book signing — a rare opportunity to meet these brave men! Shoreham Airshow is highly honoured that they are making such an effort to visit Shoreham Airshow. The RAF have supported them well with displays from the Eurofighter, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Tucano, Tutor and Falcons parachute team on both days. The Mighty 8th US Air Force will be another integral part of the event as they too also celebrate their 70th Anniversary. The shows Display Director Rod Dean has set up a scenario with the B17 Sally B displaying with the P47 and P51. There will also be a C47 and two Piper Cubs also linked to the 8th US Air Force. For fast jet enthusiasts there will be the Sabre, Strikemaster, and Hunter T7. "Our event always receives excellent comments from the aviation media on the way me mix our displays by bringing in an assortment of both military and civilian displays, 14
and this year will be no exception," said Rod. The airshow's Press Officer, John Periam said, "The WW11 Airfield Attack and Scramble is always the highlight of the show featuring Spitfires, Hurricanes and German Buchon aircraft. Lookalikes and pyrotechnics make for an exciting backdrop. The WW1 Team are also there showing the difference between both types of flying during both air campaigns. "It does not stop there; Breitling Wing Walkers, Aerobatic Teams, the Royal Navy’s Swordfish and Sea Fury will all be airborne as will the return of the rare Tiger Nine Formation Team which attracted so much interest last year," he added. It is sure to make a great 'Family Day' with so much to do and see with trade stands, the popular craft tent, fun fair, simulators, military displays, vintage vehicles, and, of course, the large static aircraft display where one can meet the pilots and look at the aircraft in more detail. With over 50 aircraft taking to the skies over Shoreham it promises to be one of the best shows in the 24 year history of the Airshow which to date has given £1.8m to RAFA funds. For more information go to www.shorehamairshow.co.uk or contact the Ticket Hotlines 01903 282382/01903 714135. Tickets will also be available via many newsagent outlets in the region.

Keeping Vet Bills Low W
ith the increased cost of living, most people have to “cut back”. So here is a list of common ailments that you could help prevent or Local Vet Hannah manage yourself Capon from with a few helpful Coastway Shoreham hints from me! 1. Lots of mild diarrhoea and vomiting cases are caused by the animal eating inappropriate foods it has scavenged, had as leftovers, or by a sudden change of diet. So keep a check on what your animal eats. 2. Dental disease is a painful condition. Regularly check your pet’s teeth (pull the lips back and check back teeth too), use good quality diets and dental chews, and brush teeth – if you can – to help avoid unexpected dental bills. 3. Cats who over-groom, have hair loss and scabby skin, are often allergic
to flea bites. So routinely flea treat all the cats and dogs in your home (most products require a monthly application) and use a good quality house spray. 4. Nail injuries and grass seeds embedded between the toes are common. Keep nails short and if prone to these foreign bodies, also trim the fur on their feet. 5. Ear infections are common throughout the year, but could be prevented with regular visual checks, sniffs and cleaning of the ears with
an appropriate cleaner. 6. Lameness has many causes, but I regular see cases of old arthritic dogs that have been walked for longer because the sun is shining. Like us they tend to show they have overdone it the day after. Be aware of your pets’ level of fitness, and limitations. 7. Finally, don't "bury your head in the sand", problems diagnosed earlier tend to be less costly than chronic conditions – see us sooner rather than later!

sweaty feet J
une saw our focus on embarrassing feet so this month we are breaking it down and discussing the most weather appropriate issue of sweaty feet (Hyperhidrosis). Most of us have suffered from foot perspiration and odour from time to time, yet for some people, sweaty feet are a persistent problem which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. There are more sweat glands per inch in our feet than anywhere else in the body so it’s not surprising that this can cause foot problems such as foot odour and a greater risk of minor skin infections, through athlete's foot, or blisters. Hot weather can make matters worse, although sweaty feet is a winter, as well as a summer, problem. It can also be an inherited condition or caused through hormonal changes. If you are suffering with sweaty feet and their effects, why not make an appointment with Karen Burrett, our podiatrist, here at the First Foot Clinic, 84 High Street, Shoreham contact us on 01273 455080, email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
