SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK
AUGUST 2015
Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to this month’s edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. It’s August and school is out! Families off to the seaside to enjoy the sun, surf and just being together. In fact, being so close to the sea, it’s perfect for having a great day out. This time of year is when we can recharge our batteries and enjoy freedom from the workaday world in our time off. In this month’s issue you can read about the Shoreham Airshow which celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. It will be your last chance to see the Vulcan fly for the last time. We also have our regular articles this month; Judy Upton writes about the Playwright and Screen writer Constance Cox, and our local garden expert, Mark Oakley, has the latest on how to get more fruit and vegetables from your garden which should now be in its prime. And, since we will soon be into the football season, it seems appropriate that this month Louis Jones discusses injuries and what can be done about them. There are always lots of activities going in and around Shoreham and Southwick! Check out our What’s on pages to local events in August. So on that note, have a wonderful month whatever you are doing or wherever you are going. Please send your activities and events for September to us by the 5th of August.. Warm regards Angela

Shoreham Academy students in big Beach Clean-up success Last month over twenty students from Shoreham Academy descended onto the beachfront to take part in a big clean-up mission. The event was led and arranged by students aged 11-14 following a group discussion about how they could give something back to their community - brainstorming ideas together, the students settled on a big litter pick as their contribution to society. Pupils gathered at The Old Fort, Shoreham, where they were treated to a group talk from local biologist, environmental educator, and Friends of Shoreham Beach (FOSB) member Steve Savage. Following the talk they were armed with their litter picking equipment provided by FOSB, before setting off on their clean-up campaign. As an added incentive the students were given a prize for the most obscure or random item found. Items in the running included a baby’s dummy, cassette, four way plug, whiskey bottle, mini shower gel bottle, goggles, a shoe, underpants, a metal pipe joiner and sunglasses. Cllr Keith Dollemore, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment says: “We are all very proud of our beach here in Shoreham and it is just great that these young people from Shoreham Academy arranged this big clean up. They managed to mobilise over twenty students to pick litter all day, so on behalf of the town, I’d like to thank them for their ingenuity, commitment and hard work.” Form tutor Ms. Firth added: “I’m really proud of my pupils for organising this event and really hitting the ground running. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make it possible , Friends of Shoreham Beach for providing the equipment, Steve Savage for his fascinating talk and the Councils for being so accommodating. We definitely hope to continue the success next year.” Those taking part in the event hailed it a resounding success and the children enjoyed giving something back to the community, helping the beaches of Shoreham remain clean and tidy.
For the love of (healthy) food Hot on the heels of the successful Worthing Food & Drink Festival 2015, businesses across Adur and Worthing are being encouraged to sign up to the Eat Out Eat Well scheme, showing off both their culinary skills and commitment to their customers’ health. The Eat Out Eat Well award was devised and launched across Sussex in 2014, encouraging food service businesses to make healthy eating options more readily available. A poor diet plays a major role in overall health, in some cases leading to obesity and triggering some cancers, so it is vitally important to take a closer look at what we all eat. The Eat Out Eat Well reward system is based on scores and the level of award – Bronze, Silver or Gold – is dependent on these results. Every business which enters will be assessed by a member of the Environmental Health team from Adur & Worthing Councils, who will take into account the type of foods on offer, cooking methods and how they are promoted to customers. It is open to those with a Food Hygiene Rating of 3, 4 or 5. 4
SHOREHAM AIRSHOW 2015
© Geoff Lee
The countdown is on for the 26th Shoreham Airshow which is being held on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August 2015 at Shoreham Airport. “It promises to be one of the best which will be a hard act to follow after the success of the award winning event in 2014” commented Airshow Organiser Derek Harber. “We always try to make the displays different each year and the highlight for many will be the ‘swansong’ of the Avro Vulcan which will be touching down for the last time at the end of this year’s display season. It will be appearing on Sunday 23rd only. Geoffrey Lee, our Assistant Press Officer, recently had the pleasure of doing an exclusive air to air photographic sortie with this iconic aircraft and several of these images will be appearing in our ‘Souvenir Programme’, or as some Aircrew say ‘Coffee Table Book’ which will be available at the Airshow.” Flying is what Shoreham is all about and Rod Dean, the Flying Display Director, has come up with some different displays. Rod added, “I try to please all parties; there are those that like Warbirds and others who like Fast Jets. It will be ear muff time when the Royal Navy Sea Vixen (Both Days) and the RAF Typhoon (Sunday only) appear. The popular Airfield Attack and Scramble is back with more aircraft and more pyrotechnics to please the younger generation. With over 50 aircraft appearing both days in a six-hour flying display, one can be assured that there will be ample opportunity for the photographers to fill their lenses with some stunning images.” Shoreham is not just about Aircraft — it is a ‘Family Event’. There are lots to see and do from trade stands, a craft tent, nostalgic fun fair, vintage vehicles and one of the largest static aircraft displays where one can meet the aircrew. They are supported by ‘well preserved lookalikes’ who will give a feel to the era of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain which is being celebrated this year. There will be an opportunity to enter two special competitions, The Red Arrows have kindly offered two winners a day with them in February 2016 to see just what goes on behind the scenes at their base at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire. You will meet the team have lunch with them and watch their build up displays for that season. Entry tickets will only be available at the Airshow. The second prize is a chance to win a trip in an iconic spitfire. To enter this all you have to do is to go to www.shorehamairshow.co.uk/win or look at the many adverts in the regional and national press. It is a chance of a lifetime,” said John Periam Airshow Press Officer. Advanced tickets are recommended and available until Friday 14th August. Call the ticket hotline on 01903 282360. You can purchase tickets at over 90 retail outlets throughout Sussex alternatively pop into the Airshow Office adjacent to the terminal building at the airport. T TALK MONEY we are proud to be part of the award winning IFA Aspect 8. We have recently won the coveted national award of Adviser Firm of the Year at the Money Marketing Financial Services awards. From the hundreds of entries in various categories, shortlists are created. The companies are then interviewed face to face by a panel of industry experts, they are asked about how their business is structured, their advice processes, their systems and their achievements over the past year – they are scrutinised and eventually a winner is chosen. Out of five shortlisted companies in our category, I am proud to say that our company won. At Talk Money we pride ourselves on our state of the art client systems which allow us to manage people’s money pro-actively. Our new client Wealth Platform allows people access to detailed information on their whole financial situation. It includes graphs of performance and access to factsheets on individual funds. Correspondence is scanned to the system which can be viewed at the touch of a button. Gone are the days of losing track, piles of paper and an annual statement, you can view your finances at your leisure in as much detail as you like. The system gives you a central hub where you can view everything in one place, helping you keep in touch with your finances in an easy and structured way.
Most people approach an independent financial adviser at a time where their life changes, such as inheriting money or retirement. Why not make a review anyway? This will ensure your finances are working for you and that you are invested in the most appropriate and tax efficient way. This will make the most of what you have both now and in the future. If you have investments or pensions perhaps you have dealt with several different life companies in the past. If you have many different plans it can be easy to lose track. It is difficult to see the overall risk level you are taking and get a clear picture. If you take advice and it is recommended to stay with your current plans, these can be incorporated onto the system. Many providers automatically update us with values online so your plan values can be updated weekly. An overall risk level can be 6
assessed to ensure you are not taking too much, or even too little risk with your funds. The fruits of summer
W
E’RE INTO AUGUST. How did that happen and where’s the year gone? It’s been a varied year for weather again, but we’ve had some decent hot weather over the last few months, which has helped given things the boost they need. August seems to be that
12
month where although it’s still summer, the heat starts to fade as does the daylight as we still desperately try to cling onto the last vestiges of summer, before we slip into early autumn. It’s noticeable in the garden with how the plants start to react as well. It is almost as everything goes into a sort of standstill, whilst trying desperately to give its best. Fruit and vegetables should be pretty much in their prime. The key to getting them to keep producing as much as possible is to keep picking them, even if it is just a little early. If you leave your runner beans a few days too late the plant will begin to give up as it will believe it has done its job. Keep cutting back excess foliage, especially with tomato plants. You want the plant put its energy into the crop, not growing more leaves. Once you’ve got a good crop it’s important to make sure you prepare them properly for storage to get the most of of them. Onions should be ready about now, also make sure they are dried out before they go into storage. Be ruthless with any fruit and veg you pick. Use the ones that are not so good for eating now and put the better ones into storage for use later on. They will store better and will not infect other fruit or veg in storage. Keep on feeding fruit and veg plants as well to help boost their energy levels so they can carry on producing. It’s a similar story with flowers and shrubs in the garden. Keep floral displays going by doing lots of dead heading, and remove any dead plants. Try as you might to keep the summer garden going it is also time to turn half a mind to the future and to start buying bulbs for autumn planting such as tulips, daffodils and crocus. Now that’s a frightening thought! It’s also a good time to start saving seeds from plants that have performed well ready for next year, such as sunflowers. It’s a very satisfying and cheap way of keeping the garden going through the years The lawn will have suffered a little over the summer with the higher temperatures and drier weather. As you get to the end of the month, it’s a good time to start thinking about scarifying the lawn to get dead grass out of it and doing any repairs. The lawn will also respond well to a good autumn feed. You should be starting to cut the lawn on a higher cut to start allowing it to grow longer now as well Undoubtably you will start looking forward towards the next seasons and planning for what you might do. I always find it’s a good idea to take a few photos of the garden when it’s in full flow. As well as a pleasant reminder it also helps planning when it comes to working out what went were and when and what did and didn’t work So make the best of August and get as much enjoyment as possible form the garden and keep your fingers crossed for the summer spilling over well into September Mark Oakley, Any Garden To advertise call: 01273 452065

What are the most common knee injuries in Footballers? Anterior Cruciate Ligament damage
Footballer Knee Injuries One of the most common problems we see in footballers is knee pain. It is a very physical sport, where a multitude of different things can cause trauma to the knee, such as twisting, tackling and over extending or stretching. This month Louis Jones explores some of the most common knee injuries sustained by footballers and what to do…
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

What is it? The anterior cruciate ligament is the front pair of ligaments that crosses over to protect the knee from overextending or shifting forwards too far. How does it occur? This usually occurs when a player overextends their knee, when the foot is planted and there is a direct blow to the front of the knee from a tackle. This causes the knee to bend the opposite way to its normal range, which overstretches or even worse still, can rupture the ligament. What is the treatment? Usually if the ligament is completely ruptured, the knee will require surgery to repair the damage and create a more stable knee. Failure to do this will cause increased shearing forces in the knee joint, which can accelerate and increase the risks of osteoarthritis.
Medial Collateral Ligament Sprain
What is it? The MCL protects the inside of the knee joint, providing stability so that the knee moves in a forward and backward, hinge movement and not side to side. How does it occur? Usually this occurs if the foot is planted and a player rotates inwards on the knee, or when an opponent player tackles hard from the outside of the knee, forcing it to bending inwards. What is the treatment? If the sprain is mild then strengthening exercises can create more stability to the inside of the knee to stop twisting and overstretching of the ligament. In very rare cases the ligament can be completely torn, which would require surgery to repair.
Meniscal Tear
What is it? The meniscus is a cartilage shock absorber that sits inside the knee joint to provide protect against bone on bone contact and rubbing. How does it occur? The meniscus can tear, if a player is weight bearing and twisting through the knee, which compresses and grinds the meniscus, and causes a tear in the surface of the cartilage. What is the treatment? This requires keyhole surgery to repair and trim the damaged cartilage. Resting the knee or treating the knee conservatively is not effective, because the cartilage tear gets caught in the joint, and can causing “locking”, whereby the knee gets stuck whilst trying to bend or straighten it. With any sports injury, it is always advisable to follow the rule of RICE for 48 hours. Rest the area, use Ice-packs to reduce any swelling and bleeding, Compress the area, again to reduce swelling and to improve circulation, and lastly Elevate the area to help drain any swelling. You should consult a sports injury specialist, such as a Physio, to assess the damage caused, to determine if the injury can be resolved through treatment and exercise, or in worstcase scenarios, surgery may be required. We have the ability to refer for X-Ray and MRI Scans, and to refer directly to specialists for further investigation. Unfortunately due to the nature of these injuries, there is no way of guaranteeing that you can avoid them, but having strong thigh muscles will help reduce your risk of injury. If any of the information in this article has raised any questions or if you are suffering with knee damage from football, please feel free to contact me on 01273 467614 or at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. SHOREHAM WRITER TURNS TO CRIME
A
SHOREHAM WRITER and journalist has turned to crime with his first novel. Peter Bartram has drawn on his own local newspaper experience in Headline Murder, which is on sale in bookshops and online from 28 August. The story, set in the 1960s, follows the adventures of a Brighton reporter who stumbles on the mystery of an unsolved murder while investigating the disappearance of a seafront trader. Mr Bartram, who lives in Shorehamby-sea, began his career on the Worthing Herald newspaper. He later worked in London on newspapers and magazines before becoming freelance. Since then, he has written thousands of articles and 21 non-fiction books, including five ghost-written. He was a member of the Sussex Police Authority for four years during the 1970s. Mr Bartram said: “I hope that Headline Murder will be the first of a Crampton of the Chronicle series of humorous murder mysteries. I’m already working on the second book in the series. “I’ve drawn on a few of my own experiences in writing the book. But Colin
18
Crampton, my fictional reporter, pulls some outrageous scams that I’d have never have thought of as he unravels the mystery.” Peter Lovesey, former chairman of the Crime Writers’ Association, who also lives in Sussex, has given the book a generous cover endorsement. He wrote: “Headline Murder is the real deal, giving
a wonderful insight into local journalism and capturing the swinging sixties to perfection.” Headline Murder is published in paperback by Roundfire Books at £9.99 and is also available in e-book formats for £4.99. More at: www.colincrampton.com

SUSSEX WILDLIFE TRUST
HELP WANTED
I
F YOU ARE interested in wildlife and enjoy working with children, then this is the perfect opportunity for you! Sussex Wildlife Trust is looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand with children visiting its outdoor education centres at Woods Mill nature reserve near Henfield, and Tilgate Park near Crawley. If you are over 16 and keen to share your enjoyment of wildlife with others then why not consider joining the team? You don’t need to be an expert, but a little knowledge is useful and enthusiasm essential. Most of your time will be spent outside helping with activities such as our ‘eye spy’ lake walk, games in the alder grove, pond dipping or bug hunting. Activities are linked to the national curriculum for children aged 4 - 11 years, and also include woodland studies and bushcraft skills. There are also opportunities to get involved as a volunteer with our very popular Nature Tots groups, children’s holiday clubs and family events. If you would like to find out more, please come along to the introductory session at Woods Mill nature reserve on Thursday 24 September 2015 from 10:00 - 14:30. Education volunteering is subject to two satisfactory references and DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance, which will be arranged for you if you decide to become a regular volunteer.

GAMBIT GAMES
GAMING CONVENTION Gambit Games UK, a non-profit tabletop gaming club based in Hove, was formed over 25 years ago by its founders Barry Holden, Gareth Wynn and David Shotter. What began in a small back room has grown in to a busy gaming club with over 100 members. The club will be holding their second one-day gaming convention in Shoreham in September. If you’re a gaming fanatic then this event will be right up your street.
L
AST SEPTEMBER GAMBIT GAMES held their very first gaming convention at Hove Town Hall. It offered gaming suppliers, demonstrations and tournaments in a full single-day event. This year they will be bringing the event to Shoreham – this time it will be bigger and better. On Saturday 26th September they will be invading the Shoreham Centre for 12 hours from 10am until 10pm. They will have a mix of national games suppliers, such as Mantic Games and Warlord (the makers of the very popular Bolt Action), as well as smaller independent retailers from the surrounding area. This means there will be a wide selection of board games, miniature war games and card
24
games available to buy. This will be the first major event to be held in the Shoreham Centre since its extensive revamp. The venue offers a perfect setting for the convention as it is ideally situated for both bus and train as well as having ample car parking, so however you travel it is easy to get to. The new Pond Cafe will be open all day for refreshments or try a range of freshly made meals for lunch. There will be more tournaments as well. For war game players there will be the return of War Machine, Bolt Action and X-Wing plus, for the first time, Flames of War. For those that prefer card games they will have Magic the Gathering, Cardfight Vanguard, Pokemon and Lords
of War tournaments most of which will be in the evening allowing players the full day to make the most of the rest of the convention. Gambit Games will also be adding smaller events such as Dice Masters, Star Realms and Warhammer Conquest if there is enough interest. All tournaments will require an additional ticket which can be purchased online at www.gambitgames.co.uk. This year there will also be a Cosplay competition which which will offer prizes for the best female, best male and best under 16. Cosplay is short for Costume Play and refers to someone dressing up as a superhero or a character from a video game, comic book, or movie – they really hope that it will bring something different to the event. Last year they raised money for the Chestnut Tree House. This year Gambit Games have two charity partners for the event. The Icon Legion will be joining us again this year to collect money for The Shoreham Dog Trust, so it is very likely that the streets of Shoreham will see the likes of Spiderman, Batman or Judge Dredd walking around the Artisan Market with collection buckets. They are also running a raffle and childrens ‘paint a soldier’ competition to raise funds for the Friends of Shoreham Fort; they will be on-hand throughout the event to talk to people about the important work they do and talk about its history. For more details then visit: www. gambitgames.co.uk or search on Facebook ‘Gambit Games’. Why not pop along to one of their events: KD Games meet up every Tuesday from 4pm till 10pm at the Royal George Pub near Holmbush, Shoreham; and Gambit Games has its game day on the last Sunday of the month at the Scout hut, Vale Park, Portslade. FOOTWEAR
This month Karen and Gaynor, podiatrists at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, talk about the importance of Footwear.
F
OOTWEAR IS A common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called “If the shoe fits, wear it” found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few people get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of both men’s and women’s appearance and the sort of shoes that are “acceptable” changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. Quick tips to remember when shoe shopping • Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes • Feet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest • Buy the right shoe for the purpose • If you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles/orthotics) • Buying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly. Ensure they fit correctly For an appointment call 01273 455080, email: email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or vist www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
