HAM ROAD CAR PARK NOW OPEN
ADUR PLANS TO REGENERATE THE CIVIC CENTRE A new high quality office building and demolition of the former Council office feature in phase 1 of plans to redevelop the Adur Civic Centre site on Ham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea. In a report approved by Executive Members at last night's Joint Strategic Committee, Adur District Council has set out ambitions to deliver new office space, plus new homes in later phases to help meet the local area's housing needs. An early demolition of the Council's former office building will also deliver significant savings, eliminating the costs of maintenance and security at the currently deteriorating building. The site has recently been used as temporary office space for local businesses, and it was announced this week that the former staff car park will open for public use. This will remain in use until development on the new business space begins on site. Speaking after Wednesday's meeting,
Leader of Adur District Council, Cllr Neil Parkin, commented: “Adur currently has a lack of high quality business space, therefore it's important that we take a proactive stance to improve this — in order to retain existing businesses and generate new investment. For the future of our District, this is a key opportunity to regenerate an existing vacant site to support our employment needs and offer new homes.” Executive Member for Regeneration, Cllr Brian Boggis, added: “The vacant Adur Civic Centre provides the Council with a fantastic opportunity to deliver new and much needed business premises, jobs and homes. It's great for Adur that we can make use of this redundant brownfield site to enhance our district's economy. Going forward, it will be vital to see people getting involved with consultations throughout the planning process, to help shape the scheme into a fitting development for our community.”

Brexit – Time for a financial review?
W
HICHEVER WAY WE voted in the EU referendum it seems the result has come as a shock to many of us. Some are happy with the outcome feeling that our country may eventually take back more control, some have accepted the result and are moving on, whilst others continue to be extremely upset. Things have been moving very quickly at the time of writing this article; it has just been announced that Theresa May will be our next prime minister. At least now this is clear. Hopefully things will start to take shape and this may lead to a more stable future for all of us, whatever our stance. These are unprecedented and uncertain times and it is little wonder that some are putting off decisions; whether that may be businesses waiting for answers on trade deals or individuals with investments. Many with cash in the building society or bank may well hold on even though it is suggested that rates may decrease again in the short term. Experience shows that businesses and individuals tend to err on the side of caution in such challenging times. There has been some surprise that so far the stock-markets have not taken the predicted massive falls, however, it would appear that the Brexit may have a slow and steady impact as businesses hold back on deals and the currency weakens. On a positive note, remember that the value of the pound decreasing has a positive impact on exports. I personally think there will be winners and losers in this situation as businesses process the impact on their individual trades. Some will continue to prosper in the UK, and others will decide they may be better locating themselves elsewhere; this has all yet to be seen as negotiations progress. George Osborne has already stated that he will reduce Corporation Tax to 15%, the lowest corporation tax rate of any major economy, this should have a positive effect. Also, Mark Carney the Governor of the Bank of England has been a welcome and steadying influence, announcing straightaway that there were strong contingency measures in place. How you deal with your own finances at these times often depends on your personal situation. Those with many years to invest their funds may still invest in the stock-market, whereas people who have less time may leave their money in safer assets such as building society accounts, National Savings or Premium Bonds. 6
If you already have money invested in pensions or other types of equity based investments now is a time to make sure your money is being managed properly. It would be wise to ensure that you are invested across a range of funds to help diversify into different areas and that the risk level is right for you. This will help put you in the best possible position going forward. For an independent review of your finances and a free initial consultation please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be happy to assist. Talk Money is a trading style Aspect 8, a member of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Charles Dalmon, Old Shoreham Poet
T
HE POET CHARLES Dalmon was born in Old Shoreham in 1872 and spent his boyhood in the county of Sussex, where he was educated at Washington village school. His grandfather William Dalmon lived in Thakeham and West Chiltington and there are claims that the family was descended from William Damon, who was the favourite lute-player of Elizabeth I. Charles Dalmon also possessed Romany blood as he wrote in his ‘Romany Songs’: ‘From far-off hills and far-off plains A wild cry comes to me: The blood of Kings is in your veins – The Kings Of Romany’ These songs are contained in a volume of verse entitled ‘A Poor Man’s Riches’ which celebrated the countryside and wildlife of Sussex. There are moments that could easily be remembrances of childhood walks beside the Adur: ‘I hear a homing heron pass Along the moonless night; I hear the hedgehog in the grass; I see a glow-worm’s light. Many of his verses praising his home county were published in Sussex County Magazine. Charles Dalmon moved to London to seek his place in the literary scene there, but things did not at first go well, and he came close to starvation. Obtaining a position in the library of the Post Office saved him. While working there, Dalmon completed his first book of verse, ‘Minutiae’. Tennyson was kind
8
enough to read the volume and crossed out Dalmon’s despairing words ‘The end is failure’ clearly hoping the young poet had a brighter future ahead than he could presently see for himself. Three years later, Dalmon’s second book of
poetry ‘Song Favours’ was published., followed by 1900’s ‘Flower and Leaf’. It would be another twenty years before Dalmon published a fourth volume of poetry. Entitled ‘A Poor Man’s Riches’ it was dedicated ‘With the love of a lifetime to Chanctonbury, the most beautiful of all the Downs’. This book had a dedication, written earlier by fellow nature poet Edward Thomas, which stated: ‘Before Mr Belloc and Kipling, Mr Dalmon was a Sussex poet; lyrics from his pen are included in some half a dozen anthologies. He saw strange visions. He saw Cupid and two or three other gods down in Sussex; and even in Chiswick he knew a dryad.’ Dalmon in turn wrote
‘Elegy for Edward Thomas’, upon the poet’s death at Arras in 1917, during World War 1: The feathered birds, and fishes finned And clouds and rain and calm and wind, The sun and moon and stars declare All life is one life, everywhere. The book is full of verses that celebrate the beauty of the Sussex Downland and another book ‘A Sussex Call Note’ details the many things Charles Dalmon loved here including cider, custard pies and jellied quince. Later he revisited his favourite spot Chanctonbury too in two further verses including ‘To a Skylark singing above Chanctonbury’. His verses evoke an old rural Sussex, usually in springtime with its people and wildlife celebrating its joy. One of his most charming poems ‘Our Lady Of The Weald’ contains the lines ‘The thrush must get the puddler’s art The squirrel pignut-digging, And tadpoles how as frogs to start And snipe the knack of zigging’ Charles Dalmon died on 29th March, 1938 in the Charterhouse home for ‘indigent gentlemen’ in the city of London. The building had once been a monastery and continued to be a quiet, contemplative place. Dalmon had in later life a delicate constitution, perhaps because of his early hardships, and so his body of work is quite modest in size, though perhaps all the more pure and charming for that. A season of bugs and diseases
I
T’S NOT BEEN a great summer so far has it! We have struggled with high amounts of rainfall; however, the temperatures have remained reasonably warm. That means that it has been pretty good growing weather for some plants, but miserable for others. As always mother nature throws us challenges! The warm humid weather has certainly given good growing conditions for our least favourite plants, weeds! It seems you only have to turn your back and another one has popped up and grown to about 6 inches. You really need to keep on top of them and be ruthless. A few minutes spent each day is a good
10
investment before they ran wild and take over an area, giving you a seemingly impossible task. If its dry, then the most effective way is to use a hoe. Much better than weedkiller and just as effective. Another problem with the damp summer is the fact that certain diseases love this type of weather. Probably the worst is blight. The main plant this will attack is tomatoes. It is an airborne virus so once it gets onto one plant; the chances are it will spread to the rest. It is easily noticed as brown patches that appear on the fruit and the plant, that will slowly turn black. If you notice it, and I know many people are suffering from it already, remove the plant straight away. Don’t put it on the compost heap. Either burn the plants or put them in a bag and dispose of them in the bin. It is probably too late for many, but keep greenhouses well ventilated to help reduce the risk. Also make sure the greenhouse and any pots etc., get a good clean down with hot soapy water once they are empty. This time of year is usually the worst for bugs and diseases. It makes sense when you consider that everything is in full bloom, so there is plenty for them to feed on and the weather is just how they like it. Most can be dealt with quite simply. For example, a plant that is covered in blackfly can look like it is past help, but a quick spray off with a powerful jet of water will remove the offenders. Sometimes there is no alternative but to take a trip to the garden centre and get the correct product to deal with the problem. If you do, make sure you follow instructions carefully. As with the weeds the best way to keep on top of any problem is to check the plants regularly for any signs of problems. Have a good check down into plants and turn over leaves. For example, cabbages can look perfectly healthy and fine, but turn over the leaves and you can spot small clusters of yellow eggs. Leave them and you’ll find the cabbages stripped bare in a few days once the hordes of caterpillars hatch out. If something on a plant doesn’t look right, then the internet is a wonderful tool to help identify the problem. The same with any bugs that appear. If you are not sure, try to identify them first. Some will cause damage, however some can be great friends in the garden and you need all the allies you can get! So it really hasn’t been the greatest of summers, but it’s not over yet, so let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope what remains improves. Then again it would be boring if it was predictable. Anterior Cruciate Ligament damage
What is it? The anterior cruciate ligament is the front pair of ligaments that crosses over to protect the knee from overextending or shifting forwards too far. How does it occur? This usually occurs when a player overextends their knee, when the foot is planted and there is a direct blow to the front of the knee from a tackle. This causes the knee to bend the opposite way to its normal range, which overstretches or even worse still, can rupture the ligament. What is the treatment? Usually if the ligament is completely ruptured, the knee will require surgery to repair the damage and create a more stable knee. Failure to do this will cause increased shearing forces in the knee joint, which can accelerate and increase the risks of osteoarthritis.
Medial Collateral Ligament Sprain
Knee Injuries in the Footballer
One of the most common problems we see in footballers is knee pain. It is a very physical sport, where a multitude of different things can cause trauma to the knee, such as twisting, tackling and over extending or stretching. This month Louis Jones explores some of the most common knee injuries sustained by footballers and what to do.
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG
14
What is it? The MCL protects the inside of the knee joint, providing stability so that the knee moves in a forward and backward, hinge movement and not side to side. How does it occur? Usually this occurs if the foot is planted and a player rotates inwards on the knee, or when an opponent player tackles hard from the outside of the knee, forcing it to bending inwards. What is the treatment? If the sprain is mild then strengthening exercises can create more stability to the inside of the knee to stop twisting and overstretching of the ligament. In very rare cases the ligament can be completely torn, which would require surgery to repair.
Meniscal Tear
What is it? The meniscus is a cartilage shock absorber that sits inside the knee joint to provide protect against bone on bone contact and rubbing. How does it occur? The meniscus can tear, if a player is weight bearing and twisting through the knee, which compresses and grinds the meniscus, and causes a tear in the surface of the cartilage. What is the treatment? This requires keyhole surgery to repair and trim the damaged cartilage. Resting the knee or treating the knee conservatively is not effective, because the cartilage tear gets caught in the joint, and can causing “locking”, whereby the knee gets stuck whilst trying to bend or straighten it. With any sports injury, it is always advisable to follow the rule of RICE for 48 hours. Rest the area, use Ice-packs to reduce any swelling and bleeding, Compress the area, again to reduce swelling and to improve circulation, and lastly Elevate the area to help drain any swelling. You should consult a sports injury specialist, such as a Physio, to assess the damage caused, to determine if the injury can be resolved through treatment and exercise, or in worst-case scenarios, surgery may be required. We have the ability to refer for X-Ray and MRI Scans, and to refer directly to specialists for further investigation. Unfortunately due to the nature of these injuries, there is no way of guaranteeing that you can avoid them, but having strong thigh muscles will help reduce your risk of injury. If any of the information in this article has raised any questions or if you are suffering with knee damage from football, please feel free to contact me on 01273467614 or at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. Pirates, Paddles and Pints Lots of excitement is building in Shoreham by Sea and across the Adur district about Shoreham RiverFest 2016 — August Bank Holiday weekend 27th to 29th August.
T
HIS COMMUNITY EVENT was originally created by James Parker of Suters Yard who encouraged us all to recognise the past, present and future of our beautiful River Adur. For many people the drama, fun and passionate spirit of competition is dominated by the famous annual Dragon Boat racing ON Sunday 28th from 8am. Entries for the racing are still available — visit the facebook page for details. If you don't feel like joining one of the teams of paddlers grab a riverside spectator position at Ropetackle or along the Norfolk bridge. Of course we can't suggest you bet on the winning teams so instead we will encourage you to give to one of the RiverFest official charities for the weekend. On the Sunday we will be collecting for the Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station. After the Dragon Boat racing you can wander to Coronation Green and listen to the popular Taylor Maid band, followed by lots of other live music, or simply enjoy a great pint. Throughout RiverFest, our partner bars and pubs such as Duke of Wellington, The Old Star, The Royal Sovereign and Suters Yard will all be open for business. The word is spreading about the exciting programme of events on and off the water starting with the RiverFest artisan market on Coronation Green on Saturday morning of 27th August.
You’ll need to build up an appetite for the treats from the market and across the town’s cafes, bakers and restaurants. For that reason, “Gemma Fitness” will lead everyone (all ages and abilities) in the Fun Flash Fitness session at 10am, again on Coronation Green. At 11am families can relax watching the classic river movie, Wind in the Willows which is being screened at Ropetackle. Ropetackle is also part of the Great RiverFest treasure hunt route (pop in soon and get your treasure hunt entry forms from many venues across the town — keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter for more details. adventures the team of volunteers have worked to create for this weekend of community events. The whole weekend has been made possible with the kind support of local business people, the Adur and Worthing District Council community grant and many hours from volunteers. Throughout Saturday everyone is invited (Captain RiverFest would rather we said the alternative is to 'walk the plank'!!!) to don their best pirate, buccaneer, or lady pirates outfit ready for the Pirates Picnic and the fancy dress competition. Pirates should congregate at 2pm at Coronation Green where the 17
judges will be awarding the most dashing Captain RiverFest, best Pirate Family, Junior Pirate, cutest Pirate Princess, and best behaved Pirate Pet. You can bring your own picnic or indulge in a local treat from the market. Entry wristbands (donations of £2 please) can be obtained on the day or in advance from Tom Foolery, Suters Yard, Ropetackle, or from the RiverFest stand at the farmers market Saturday 13th August. Email shorehamriverfest@gmail.com to enter The Great River Bake Off which will be judging cakes or biscuits created by young and not so young — we are looking for the best pirate or river themed goodies. Entries must arrive in time for judging at 3pm on Saturday on Coronation Green. Entry forms for the The RiverFest Photographic Competition are also obtained from shorehamriverfest@gmail. com — do see Facebook for more details. As well as adults entering their snaps of 18
The River Adur, Fun in Shoreham by Sea, or Riverbank Nature. To date we have been delighted to see entrants as young as 5 years of age! It is exciting to confirm that local professional photographer and videographer Scott Wright, who has done such superb work portraying Shoreham by Sea, is leading our judges alongside Tina Carter of the branding and design agency Day1. Another first for The Shoreham RiverFest 2016 is the High Street’s MS Cycles organising a “bike off”. This will enable everyone (qualified instructors to help all ages and ability levels) to have a go at discovering what fun it is to ride the Sustrans cycle routes. Routes run from Coronation Green on Monday 29th from 10am. Also on Monday you can meet people from the Sussex Yacht Club
who will tell you about their fascinating history. Next year they celebrate their 125th Anniversary and on Monday will invite you to go through that mysterious wooden door to enjoy their Open Day. You can also learn about the amazing work of Sussex Sailability — another official RiverFest charity. The Monday afternoon promises more special treats such as live performances on Coronation Green with a visiting troupe from Poland and our very own sea shanty singers The Wellington Wailers — always fun. For more details do see the centre spread of this issue — and of course “like” Shoreham RiverFest on Facebook. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Adur Valley Route 3
B
ACK BY POPULAR demand, and now in its third year, Route 3 is running weekend services through the Adur Valley. On the 29th August, Bank Holiday Monday, they will be offering nostalgic trips on our Routemaster buses which will operate to the Sunday timetable. They will be operating our low, floor, wheelchair accessible buses every two hours. Details of the route and timetable information can be found in the Summer Edition of Brighton & Hove “Bus Times”, Southern Transit website and our booklets, which will be available on the buses and at various outlets along the route. As a result of feedback from passengers, they have amended the route in the Bramber and Steyning areas to speed up journeys in each direction.
Buses towards Horsham
From Beeding/Dacre Gardens, route 3 will now travel direct to Steyning Leisure Centre along the A283 Steyning-By-Pass and Horsham Road, continuing to Bramber via the Steyning Clock Tower, Bramber Road and Clays Hill.
Buses towards Shoreham
From The Rising Sun at Upper Beeding, route 3 will now travel through Bramber and then via A283 Steyning-By-Pass and Horsham Road to Steyning Leisure Centre. Buses will then serve the Clock Tower, Bramber Road and Clays Hill and continue directly to Shoreham via the A283 & Dacre Gardens. The removal of the double run through Bramber means that route 3 will operate a loop through Steyning in one direction only. Buses travelling to both Shoreham and Horsham will use the same stops on the east side of the road. Following closely the Downs Link and offering glorious views of the countryside, we ride to Horsham. Local points of interest on the bus route, starting at the Holmbush Centre in Shoreham, are the many shops, bars and restaurants and a monthly farmers’ market all within reach of our route 3 bus stops in Steyning, Henfield and Horsham. There is a wealth of things to do from the 37 miles of Downs Link passing through the High Street in Henfield, with footpaths & bridleways for walkers, horse riders & cyclists. Through picturesque villages of Partridge Green and Littleworth, past churches, historic houses and gardens to eateries and pubs where local foods, wines and beers can be sampled. Pizza lovers will enjoy “The Bull Inn”, and real ale drinkers will appreciate the popular Dark Star Pub “The Partridge.” Gardening lovers can stop off to explore the Camelia Botnar Homes and Garden Centre and families wanting either a quiet lakeside walk or the more adventurous can also explore Southwater Country Park, a 90 acre site, offering activities which including canoeing, sailing and windsurfing. Our route reaches Horsham with its various cultural and leisure activities where route 3 terminates, serving both the bus and train station which offer interchange and further onward travel facilities. Discovery tickets and English National Concessionary Passes are accepted for travel on this service. Ingrown Toenails
Whilst there are some nail shapes that are more prone to developing an ingrown toenail, this problem is commonly caused by trauma or poor toenail cutting. An ingrown toenail is determined by a nail that pierces the flesh of the toe. If severe, the toe may become infected and if left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe so the quicker you treat it, the better. People will often try cut a ‘V’ in the nail to try to prevent ingrown toenails but sadly this is a myth. Cutting the nail straight across, avoiding cutting too low down the sides of the nail is the best way to manage your nails. However if you already have an ingrown toenail, see your podiatrist who may be able to treat you with or without surgery (a minor procedure under local anaesthetic). For more information about the treatment for ingrown toenails or any other foot problem, please make an appointment with our podistrists Karen or Gaynor by contacting us on 01273 455080 or email us at email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or visit our website on www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
