SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

AUGUST 2017

Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to the August edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Well, here we are in August and how the months are flying by! The weather has been amazing this year, and we hopefully have many more weeks of summer sunshine. School is now out until September which means opportunities to take part in many local activities or join clubs. Check out our What’s On pages — just in case you want ideas on what to do. In Mark Oakley’s gardening articles, he offers advice how to keep your garden in shape and resistant against drying out and the occasional trampoline — great for entertaining kids but a bit of a nuisance when cutting the grass! Our contributors include Claire Cook from Talk Money, Louis Jones and Jenny from Shoreham Osteopath on how to look after your body over the summer period. The Lions have been continuing their great work supporting those who are blind or have low vision across the world. An incredible achievement. Many thanks to all the contributors to this month’s edition. Lots to read and please let us know of any activity, charity activities that you are doing for September and send it in by the 12 August. Have a wonderful month. Warm regards, Angela

CALLING ALL JUNIOR CRIME SOLVERS

Animal Agents: the Summer Reading Challenge starts in your local library on Saturday 15 July 2017. Every year, thousands of families all over the country take part in the UK’s biggest reading event for children in libraries run by The Reading Agency. This summer children will be challenged to solve a mystery at their local library with the Animal Agents gang. Bart the Bloodhound, Daisy Rabbit, Bernice the bear and Slip and Slide the snake twins, need help to sort out a mystery down at the library. It is free to take part and you can collect fun rewards as you read books through the holidays. Children may choose the library books they like and your local library has a great selection waiting for you — from picture books for preschoolers, stories and comic books for older children and information books about every topic — the choice is yours! Once you have your library card you can even register with the challenge online this year before the start date. After registering for the challenge children need to visit the library any time from Saturday 15 July and will be rewarded with a special Animal Agents wristband. They then collect clues about the mystery as they read books through the summer, coming back to the library to tell us what they have read. Special stickers will help children solve the mystery. Children may crack the crime after reading six books and will be rewarded with a special Animal Agents certificate and medal. The Summer Reading Challenge is free and an easy way to encourage children to enjoy reading over the summer holiday and it runs until Saturday 16 September. The main challenge is for children aged 4 to 12 years but younger children may take part in the Mini Challenge, collecting stickers as they share library books and underthrees will be rewarded with a special ‘gold medal sticker’. This year, grown-ups helping children take part can join a special reading challenge themselves. We also recruit lots of volunteers, aged 14+ years, to help run the challenge and are currently looking for volunteers to help at Southwick Library. It is free to join the library and free to borrow books. It is also free to take part in the Animal Agents challenge — you only need a library card to register. Visit your local library or www.westsussex.gov.uk/src to find out more. 4

A HUGE THANK YOU…

The "traditional" Rotary Year is now coming to a close, and what a year it has been! They have had some amazing fund raising events: the Christmas Collections, Car Boot Sale, Craft Fair and Books in Banks. The generous donations have enabled them to support many local youth activities including new nets for Southwick Cricket Club, Youth Speak and literacy support at Shoreham Academy. Other local donations have been made to Adur Special Needs, Shoreham Food Bank and Shoreham Mental Health. Overseas they have made donations to Polio Plus (to finally eliminate polio from the world), the North Tagun Boat Project following the Phillipines Typhoon Disaster and education projects in Africa. In total they have made 30 donations; 22 local, and eight national and international. They are truly 'for communities.' In between all this, club members still find time to have fun, with visits to Solent Forts, The Houses of Parliament, Ricardos in Shoreham and Ford recycling facility. They would like to extend a huge thank to all the wonderful people of Shoreham and Southwick whose generosity means they can continue everything they do in our local community, nationally and overseas.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Getting the best from your pension fund

I

F YOU HAVE built up a pension fund, or several during your working life there are many options for taking income when the time is right. The whole thing can be quite bewildering and the right choice depends on your circumstances and what you are looking for from your pension income. Some people want absolute guarantees, others require flexibility. Some are single and are not worried about providing an income to a spouse should they die, for others a widow’s pension is essential. If you have a company scheme, the income could be reduced because the scheme provides for a widow’s pension, but you may not be married. It can get quite complicated and choosing the wrong option could potentially reduce what you receive from your pensions. You may have several different pension pots with various providers. When you reach retirement age they will often write to you offering an annuity, some people just sign the form and obtain the income from their current provider. How do you know that is the right way of setting up your income and how do you know that the company will provide you with the highest annuity in the marketplace? This can be especially true if you have a history of ill health, you could be eligible for an enhanced annuity. This is because if your life expectancy is less, some providers would be willing to pay a higher income because they calculate this based on the fact that they may not have to pay you for as long. Below I will briefly explain the main pension income options: LIFETIME ANNUITY: A lifetime annuity is a guaranteed income paid to you for life from an insurance company. The annuity would be purchased using the money you have built up in your pension plans during your working life. The insurance company will assess how long they think you will live and will quote the amount of guaranteed income they are willing to pay in return for your lump sum. INCOME DRAWDOWN: Your pension money would remain invested and you can draw the tax free cash, income, or a combination of the two directly from your fund. LUMP SUM OPTIONS: These differ depending on which type of scheme you have. Generally only 25% of the lump sum

would be tax free with the remaining amount being subject to income tax. For independent advice on any of the above, or if you are approaching retirement and looking at your options please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist.

Charles Bennett – from Shoreham to Hollywood

M

ANY OF ALFRED’S Hitchcock’s famous films including ‘The Thirty Nine Steps’ (an adaptation of the 1915 novel by John Buchan) were scripted by a playwright and screenwriter Charles Bennett. Born in Shoreham-by-Sea in 1899, Charles Bennett began his stage and screen career as a child actor in 1911. While still in his teens, he fought on the battlefields of France in the First World War, before continuing with his career as a stage actor when the war ended. Working in the theatre industry ran in Bennett’s family and his mother had rather unfortunately lost a considerable sum of money staging commercially unsuccessful plays. Bennett’s acting career flourished however and whilst playing in Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ at Stratford-Upon-Avon his name was even billed higher than that of John Gielgud. In 1915 Bennett made his film acting debut in ‘John Halifax, Gentleman’ directed by George Pearson. While acting in Paris for Ben Greet’s Shakespearean Company in 1925/26, Charles Bennett wrote his first play ‘The Return’. From that year he changed career – becoming a playwright. His second produced play ‘Blackmail’ starred Tallulah Bankhead and was seen by Alfred Hitchcock. It made such an impression on the director that he turned it into the first British made ‘talkie’. Bennett’s play ‘The Last Hour’ also later became a film. After ‘Blackmail’ Bennett went on to write six more films for Alfred Hitchcock. These were ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ (1934), ‘The Thirty Nine Steps’ (1935), ‘The Secret Agent’ and ‘Sabotage’ (1936), ‘Young and Innocent’ in 1937 and later when living in the US, ‘The Foreign Correspondent’ (1940). Hitchcock then moved on to working with other writers, and never fully acknowledged the instrumental role Charles Bennett had played in scripting so many of his early films. Charles Bennett had though now attracted the attention of Hollywood and became part of the wave of foreign talent invited to work there in the 1930s. He was hired by Universal Studios at one thousand dollars a week, where at first he was asked to write minor romantic ‘B’ movie stories. He stayed at Universal for six months but then his talents caught the eye of director Cecil B. De Mille.

This was the time when Hollywood’s glamour, wealth and power was arguably at its height. Bennett’s stylish appearance when attending a meeting was described Jesse L. Lasky Jr. in his book ‘What Happened To Hollywood?’‘The newly arrived Charles Bennett would appear wreathed in scarves, draped in a dashing blazer, or dustily booted, fresh from a polo match. He flew planes, rode like a Cossack, and could on occasion come dangerously near stealing scenes from the Boss (Cecil B. De Mille) who had always been second to none in “office performances”.’ Scripts by Bennett for De Mille included ‘The Story of Dr Wassell’ and ‘Unconquered’. During the Second World War Charles Bennett also wrote propaganda films for the British Ministry Of Information. “If I couldn’t write, I wouldn’t want to live” he once commented. Bennett now had the credits to carve out a career writing mystery, suspense, horror, adventure and film noir titles including an adaptation of H. Rider Haggard’s ‘King Solomon’s Mines’ (1937). He was asked to adapt work by Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne and Edgar Allen Poe. He also directed the films of two of his own scripts. They were ‘Madness Of The Heart’ which he shot in England in 1949, and starred Margaret Lockwood as a blind nun, and 1950’s ‘No Escape’. His bestreceived later film was based on M.R, James’‘Casting The Runes’. Entitled ‘Night Of The Demon’ it was directed by Jacques Tourneur in 1957. Charles Bennett then worked on American TV series, writing episodes of ‘Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea’, ‘The Wild, Wild West’ and ‘Land Of The Giants’. With Anthony Ellis he co-wrote the first adaptation of a James Bond novel, a 1954 TV production of ‘Casino Royale’ His last movie in 1965, saw him reunited with Jacque Tournier for ‘The City Under The Sea’, which starred Vincent Price. In his eighties, Charles Bennett began to write novels. He was the first to admit that to some extent he regretted his move to Hollywood and working inside its system where often he was only one of a number of writers hired to work on a script. Charles Bennett died on the 5th June 1995 in Los Angeles. Judy Upton

A resilient garden

W

E ARE INTO August and so far, this summer has been pretty good, especially in comparison to recent years, and noticeably drier over a prolonged period. Hopefully the good weather will continue now we are into the school holidays, but perhaps some welcome rain in the nights would be helpful. It has been noticeable with the lack of rainfall, how much extra

watering we have all had to do to keep things looking their best. But have you noticed how differently the garden reacts after it has had some rainfall as opposed to tap water? Everything seems to get a new lease of life and bloom so much better than when you water with a hose. It just shows the difference, with the minerals that are in the rainwater and the fact that the water is a lot softer, as we live in a hard water area. It really underlines the advantages of using rain water you have collected. So, make sure the water butts are getting topped up with the gutters and downpipes clear. If you can see if you have room for an additional water butt. It really does help The garden can tend to get forgotten and take a bit of a pounding at this time of year. We are all so busy with summer activities, holidays and the garden getting lots of wear with children and grandchildren making the most of it during the school holidays. Try and keep on top of it where you can and it will keep looking good. Most stuff in the garden is resilient, but a few helping hands will give it a better chance of looking better. If the garden is used as Wembley, then move the goal posts around a bit to give the grass a chance to recover. Also, if you have a trampoline or paddling pool, move them around every few days or so. It will allow light to get to the grass and avoid it dying off. There’s no problem with reducing the amount of times you cut the lawn either, especially when it is so dry. That gives one less job to do! Everything else in the garden is pretty much in full swing, doing its best to produce a good display. Keep it looking good by clearing anything that has died off and keep a look out for any bugs that will be in their element with so much choice of food around. It’s not unusual to get some high winds in august, so check on taller plants and make sure they are adequately tied, with good supports. There’s nothing worse coming out to find the sunflower you put so much effort into growing, collapsed in a heap after the wind has destroyed it. I like to think that august is a quieter month where the garden gives you a bit of a chance to catch your breath, take in how good it looks and gives you the time to actually sit down and enjoy it. After all if you can’t do that, then what is the point of all the effort? Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

The Boxers Shoulder This month Louis Jones look at a very common shoulder injury that can occur through the sport of boxing.

B

OXING AND BOXERCISE classes have become a very popular way for men and women alike to get fitter and shed those pounds. However, due to the repetitive nature of throwing punches and the velocity involved, injury can occur.

What is Rotator Cuff Injury?

There is a group of muscles known as the rotator cuff, which stabilise and control movement in your shoulder. As the name suggests, these muscles are responsible for shoulder rotation and form a cuff. Due to the nature of punching and rotating the arm and fist at high velocity, without enough warm up or strength in the shoulder to protect it, repetitive strains can occur very easily.

What are the Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Injury?

• An arc of shoulder pain or clicking when your arm is at shoulder height or when your arm is overhead. • Shoulder pain that can extend from the top of your shoulder to your elbow. • Shoulder pain when lying on your sore shoulder. • Shoulder pain at rest in severe cases. • Shoulder muscle weakness or pain when attempting to reach or lift. • Shoulder pain when putting your hand behind your back or head or when reaching for a seatbelt or putting on a jacket.

How is Rotator Cuff Injury Treated?

It is important, if you suspect a rotator cuff injury, to be assessed by a Physiotherapist to determine what damage has occurred. Treatment is mostly conservative in nature and consists of soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and ultrasound. In order to prevent the problem persisting, your physio may recommend a strengthening program to help make your shoulder more stable, so that your muscles can function optimally and your shoulder joint can articulate properly and in alignment. In more severe cases, where the physio may detect a tear, it may be necessary to be referred to a shoulder specialist for further investigation and treatment. There are other types of shoulder injuries that can occur through boxing, such as subluxation, dislocation, and soft tissue impingement. If you are suffering with a shoulder injury, associated with boxing or combat sport, feel free to contact me on 01273467614 or email: info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

Knights of the blind

A

NY REVIEW OF the achievements of the Lions over the years will show they are particularly known for their service to the blind and visually impaired. From vision screenings and guide dog sponsorships, to supporting eye-care centres. For nearly all the last one hundred years Lions have worked to improve the lives of people who are blind or living with low vision across the World. Helen Keller, who was born in Alabama, USA, developed a fever at 18 months of age that left her blind and deaf. With the exceptional help of Anne Mansfield Sullivan of the Perkins School for the Blind, she learnt sign language and braille. A few years later she learned to speak. And then in 1925 at the Lions Club International Convention she challenged Lions to become ‘knights of the blind in the crusade against the darkness’. The Lions accepted her challenge and their work since has included sight programs aimed at preventable blindness. Very few people 14

know that Lion George A. Bonham is credited with the introduction of the white cane in 1930. Locally, Adur East Lions Club collect approximately 5000 pairs of secondhand spectacles a year from opticians in Shoreham and Southwick and send them to Chichester Lions who have been collecting and sorting used spectacles for almost 35 years. In 1980 they delivered 700 sorted specs to the Missionary Optical Society (MOS) in Devon for use in their clinics in Kenya and India. Their collecting area soon grew and other Lions Clubs started feeding their collections to them. Over the next four years some 50,000 specs were sent to MOS in Devon. Subsequently they linked up with Le Havre Lions and Medico France and over the following five years some 100,000 specs, 43,000 lenses, and 10,000 frames were sent to Medico France while still delivering to M.O.S. as many pairs of sorted specs as they needed. Today they are receiving used spectacles from Lions clubs throughout the UK. Spectacles are delivered to them in boxes and bags of

all shapes and sizes and are processed by their club members and other volunteers in their workshop. They use their considerable experience to select the items that are suitable for recycling and to sort them in preparation for onward transmission to Medico France in Le Havre. Medico France have the necessary equipment to clean and grade the spectacles ready for use in eye camps in Africa, India and Eastern Europe. In addition Adur East Lions always look favourably on requests for sightrelated projects. In recent years they have supported Foresight both with events and a donation, and just this year a visually-impaired child in a local school was provided with an i-pad in order to access the curriculum and a donation was made to the Ropetackle Film Club to show special screenings for the visually– impaired. Look before you leap Get moving safely this summer

T

HE SUMMER SUN literally does seem to give us more energy and motivation to get out there and maybe take up a sport we haven’t played since last year (or for years!) or perhaps get down to some proper work on that garden. After months behind a desk, we may take to the great outdoors where there are things to explore, hills to climb. Even on a city break, we may find ourselves walking for miles… But we have a tendency to rush into things and realise too late that our bodies aren’t quite ready! So here are a few tips on preparing for your body for activity it may not have done for a while. 1. KEEP WELL HYDRATED: Whatever you are do, keep a bottle of water nearby and keep it filled up! 2. “WARM UP” THE WHOLE BODY: There are often specific things you can do for a particular sport, and it’s good to consult a professional on this - but getting the muscles moving with the basic exercises below is a good start. 3. STOP BEFORE YOU FEEL PAIN! During the exercise or activity, if you’re even just a little achey or tired, that’s a sign. Have a rest, a gentle stretch, change position. Try to avoid the temptation to carry on regardless just to “prove” you can. Listen to your “gut” if you think you should stop. If you don’t, it may result in injury. 4. BREATHE: For our bodies (and brains) to function efficiently, we need a good supply of oxygen. Make sure you are breathing really well. This means expanding the lungs fully by breathing into the lower ribs and back – TRY IT NOW! Put your hands on your sides, above your waist. Feel your lower ribs expanding outwards as you inhale - your tummy will automatically slightly protrude as you do this. If you feel your neck muscles tightening, you may be breathing into the upper ribs too much and shallow breathing, so see if you can work on relaxing the neck and shoulders and improve lower rib expansion. If you are tired, take a few moments to breathe deeply. 5. “WARM DOWN” AFTER EXERCISE: Gently stretch and, if

possible, don’t just head for a pub/restaurant and sit for hours in one position. If you are sitting with legs crossed, cross them the other way for a while, and from time to time, get up and move around! 6. DON’T FORGET THE SUNCREAM! Or protect your skin by covering up/wearing a hat.. The following exercises can be done by most people safely for warming up and down. If you experience any pain (other than a normal stretch) whilst doing any of them, STOP and consult a professional for advice. KNEE HUGS: Gently hug one knee to your chest (as far as is comfortable). Repeat with other knee. Do this lying down, or sitting in a chair. WHOLE SPINE STRETCH: :ie on your back with arms stretched out to the sides. Bring your right knee towards your chest and hold it with the left hand. Gently bring right knee across your body and if your neck is comfortable, turn your head to look to the right. Keep your right shoulder blade on the floor/ bed. Repeat other side. MINI-SQUATS: With knees and toes hip-width apart, bend your knees to about 45 degrees and then straighten, without locking the knees. This wakes up your legs and strengthens your core muscles. + ARM RAISES: Raise your arms in front of you to shoulder height as you squat down and lower them as you straighten your knees, to wake up your upper body. UPPER BACK STRETCH: Standing or sitting, clasp your hands behind your head to support your neck, elbows in front of you. Now open out your elbows, take a deep breath, and feel your upper back stretch. Of course, if you have longstanding issues with pain, do get these checked out by a professional (GP or a qualified osteopath, physiotherapist or chiropractor), BEFORE you embark on any new or unusual exercise. Our team at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre are always here to help. www.shorehamosteo.co.uk 01273 567654

Acupuncture ‘Better than usual care’ for Osteoarthritis of the knee says NIHR

I

N JUNE 2017 the NIHR (National Institute for Heath Research) published the findings of its latest review of Acupuncture research and concluded that, “Acupuncture is not a placebo for treatment of chronic pain” and “is better than usual care for pain from musculoskeletal conditions, knee osteoarthritis and chronic headache.” Fiona Murdoch, Acupuncturist at the Acupuncture Clinic in Shoreham by Sea, answers some questions about Osteoarthritic Knee Pain & Acupuncture… I have Osteoarthritis of the knee, how much Acupuncture will I need? Typically Acupuncture provides significant pain relief for Osteoarthritis of the knee but the pain relief does wear off. How long it lasts depends on the person and the condition of their knees. For some people the pain relief will only last a day or 2, but for others it may last a week or more, and that person may get good relief coming once every 2 -3 weeks for Acupuncture. If you haven’t experienced a good amount of pain relief within 1 or 2 treatments, Acupuncture is probably not going to help you. What will happen during my acupuncture treatment? Typically, around 10 very thin needles will be inserted around your knee and left in place for 30 minutes, often with a heat lamp over them. It doesn’t hurt, and most people find it relaxing.

How do you find an Acupuncturist? Acupuncture is currently not regulated in the UK, and people who have done a short course, often just 2 days, are legally able to practice Acupuncture. British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) members have completed a 3 year honours degree in Acupuncture and adhere to codes of ethics and conduct, undergo yearly CPD & are accredited by the PSA (Professional Standards Authority). For the best & safest care, Fiona recommends seeing a BAcC Acupuncturist. You can find members on the BAcC website www.acupuncture.org.uk. To make an appointment with Fiona at the Acupuncture clinic email: 14brunswickroad@gmail.com or telephone: 01273 757 445. www.theacupunctureclinic.co.uk

Hay fever? In America, clinical guidelines for Doctors recommend Acupuncture as a treatment for Hayfever, because the research supporting its effectiveness is good.

Quality support and help at home

H

OME INSTEAD SENIOR Care has now been open for over a year, serving Shoreham and Southwick as well as Brighton & Hove. “Our mission is to provide care at home for older people that is second to none, and to build a great reputation in the local community, both for our standards of care and as a great employer” says Liz Brackley, owner and director of Home Instead. “I first came across Home Instead when looking for additional help for my elderly parents when they lived in Buckinghamshire — they did a great job for us. So when I moved my folks to Sussex, and discovered there was no Home Instead office here, I decided that I would love to provide that standard of care for older people locally — and am excited that we have received such great client feedback so far”. Home Instead provides assistance and support for older people that is bespoke to each client — making sure that a really good relationship is developed between the client and their regular CareGiver. Companionship, comfort and compassion is provided, as well as practical assistance with household tasks, outings, shopping, meal preparation, as well as more personal care if required. “I am proud that we have a minimum visit of an hour in length, allowing plenty of time for a good chat or a game or stroll, alongside practical help – whatever is wanted. And we avoid different faces turning up for visits, as it’s really important for older people that they know who is coming and when.”

“We employ caring, compassionate and dependable people, all of whom I interview personally, supported by extensive references and our own training — but even more importantly we look for CareGivers who love being with people and really want to make a difference to someone else’s life”. Home Instead Senior Care — Brighton, Hove and Shoreham has been rated as Good in all aspects by the recent Care Quality Commission inspection. If you know anyone who might benefit from support at home, please visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/brighton for more information, or call us on 01273 284090. We are also keen to hear from anyone who would like some rewarding part-time work as a CareGiver — call us for an initial chat.

Know someone who could use a little support? Home Instead Senior Care provides awardwinning care and support for older people in the comfort of their own homes. Our visits are at least an hour in length and enable a quality, unhurried service. We focus on providing consistent CareGivers – giving companionship and peace of mind. Services include: • Companionship • Light housekeeping • Meal preparation • Respite support • Convalescent support
