Footbridge works underway

T

he first steps of construction towards the replacement Shoreham footbridge is underway. The new £9.8m bridge will have high glass balustrades which will provide both protection from the wind and improved visibility, allowing views of the Harbour and its wildlife. Additionally, with its modern design and clean lines, it will provide a safe and secure crossing between Shoreham and Shoreham Beach, ensuring residents and businesses can continue to benefit from being part of one community. It will be easier to use with a wider, better lit deck that will permit use by both pedestrians and cyclists. Those pushing prams or using wheelchairs and mobility vehicles will notice lower gradients and the removal of the ramps that currently approach the opening section.

Screen archive

Screen Archive South East has recently launched the Heritage Lottery funded Movies and Memories Project in several seaside towns along the West Sussex coast. For the next year we will screen locally-made films of everyday life in West Sussex dating from the 1930s to the 1960s in order to stimulate the memories of older people visiting day centres. Many of these people will be interviewed in order that their memories can be recorded and preserved for future generations. In order to do this we need a team of local volunteers to undertake training oral history recording in order to capture as many reminiscences as we can. If anyone is interested, we are holding a days training session in the Ropetackle Centre on the 14th September. There are limited places available for this course, so if anyone would like to take part, please would they contact us at:moviesandmemories@gmail.com or speak to one of the project team on 01273 643214. 4

Pieter Montyn, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “This is an exciting development for Shoreham which can act as the springboard for further improvements in Shoreham Town Centre.” Residents closest to the bridge will already have received a letter from Osborne, the contractor working for West Sussex County Council on this project providing contact details in case of query over the construction. Osborne will be based in a site compound located in the Riverside Road Car Park and will also be providing drop-in facilities once a week, giving information to the public about the development. Walkers and cyclists will be able to take full advantage of the new bridge when construction completes in the summer of 2013.

Church Centenary Year

I

n September 2012 the Church of the Good Shepherd will be launching the celebrations for its Centenary Year, which will conclude with their 100th Birthday Party over the weekend of July 13th-14th 2013. Over the coming year, as they lead up to this, they will be holding a number of events to mark the church building's 100 years on Shoreham Beach, and hope that many of you will join them. These will include a Pantomime in November 2013 and Variety Show in April 2013, put on by the Friends of the Good Shepherd, and the usual Big Church Quiz on the first weekend of next year's Adur Festival. There will be a Songs of Praise in February, giving the opportunity for people to choose their favourite hymns and worship songs; a MayDay Celebration with Flower Festival, Morris Dancing and Exhibition of Photos and Memorabilia from the past 100 years (in May 2013 as you might have guessed!); and A Passion for Shoreham — a three day event in June, which you will all hear much much more about in the coming months. This last was conceived as part of their Centenary, but has now spread its wings to encompass churches and community organisations right across Shoreham and Southwick — please contact Reverend Gail if you'd be interested in getting involved (see below for contact details). In the meantime, as they launch this September, please join them for one or all of these fun events: Friday 7th September at 7pm: Ted Young, Laura Ward and the Risen Road will be in Concert together again, repeating their runaway success of last year. This promises to be a great evening of varied music, chat and anecdotes with these great musicians.Look our for the posters soon around the Town. Refreshments will be provided during the Interval. Saturday 15th September from 2pm to 5pm: Their September Fayre, with Stalls, Crafts and Teas. Last year, despite two torrential downpours we had a great time and astounding levels of attendance. Please join them again if you came last year, or come along for the first time and try out our hospitality! Saturday 29th September at 6.30pm: Richard Durrant is organising a Youth Gig show-casing the musical talents of the young people of Shoreham. There are some great gifts spread around the young people of our Town — come and enjoy this display of them in the Good Shepherd Hall. For further details of any of these events, or to talk about getting involved in A Passion for Shoreham, please contact Reverend Gail Souppouris, Priest-in-Charge at the Good Shepherd on 01273 453768 or email revdgail.souppouris@ntlworld.com To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Mortgage rates reduce I

t has been over three years since Bank of England reduced the base rate to 0.5%, the lowest it has ever been. Everyone has been speculating on when rates will increase with some initially predicting it would be around about now. Looking at the flat economic news, it looks like the rates won’t rise anytime soon. In fact, some economists are speculating that rates will actually see a further decrease. If this happens let’s hope the lenders pass cuts on. Some very good news is that the Chancellor is providing £80 billion of funding to lenders. To put this nto perspective, the total lent for mortgages in the whole of 2011 was £139.9 billion. You can see that £80 billion is a huge boost. But what effect will this have? The first signs are starting to show with many lenders noticeably reducing their rates over the past couple of weeks; some are calling it a rate war! This hasn’t been seen for some time, most lenders have been shy of offering the lowest rate and attracting too much business.. Now though, there is money to lend and competition in the market.

Now is a great time to secure a fixed rate. If you have plenty of equity in your property the rates are really low, perhaps even lower than you are currently paying.

What about first time buyers? For those who want to buy a place, especially first time buyers, you will still need a reasonable deposit. There is talk, however, with this new funding that the rates may decrease at the higher percentage borrowing. For example, at the moment if you need a 90% mortgage, you would find you are paying a much higher rate than someone needing 75%. We are hoping that lenders will start to narrow this rate gap down giving first time buyers a much more affordable start. For advice on mortgages, pensions, retirement or investments please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. Where a rate is quoted the rate will depend on individual circumstances and not all borrowers will qualify for acceptance of the loan (or similar).Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You

So who could benefit? If you already have a mortgage and are paying your lender’s variable rate, you should look at your remortgage options. Now is a great time to secure a fixed rate. If you have plenty of equity in your property the rates are really low, perhaps even lower than you are currently paying. Just think, a lower rate and the security of knowing it won’t increase for a set period of time; there is something to be said for some certainty in this rapidly changing market. To see if you can secure a more competitive fixed (or variable) rate there are many things to take into account. It all depends on the size of your loan, your property value, your current job situation and many other factors. All of this determines which lenders and rates you can choose from, and therefore which rates you have access to. Sometimes it is advisable to stay with your current lender, but quite often you can make substantial savings by moving your mortgage. If you would like a good idea of what is available to you, please call me for a free initial assessment. 6

Good Morning Adur Jimmy Willis, Adur FM’s Breakfast Show presenter scribes some early morning words

H

ello dear readers. I’m excited and honoured to be writing my first column for Inside Shoreham and Southwick. When I first moved to the area a few years ago I was fortunate enough to set up home next to the magnificent south downs, I must say that it has to be one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever lived. There’s nothing quite like walking up on the South Downs on a windy summer's morning with the sea in the background to blow away the cobwebs and free the mind. Mornings have been a bit earlier recently as I’ve moved to the breakfast slot on Adur FM. As your reading this we’ve just rolled into our final week of broadcasting on 87.7FM. I must say a massive thank you to my dear listeners, without you and your interaction it would have made it a lot harder to get up at 4.30am every morning! The Jimmy Willis Breakfast Show has been one of the most fun shows I have ever been evolved with. Here at Adur FM we have a great team of experienced old pros mixed in with some great up and coming talent. I must say a big thank you to the team for all their hard work. I know a lot of the technical team have spent many long nights working to get everything ready for my show to start at 6am! Everyone at Adur FM is already looking forward to the next FM broadcast. But don’t panic folks – we will still be broadcasting online at www.adurfm.com so you won’t miss anything!

Whilst presenting the breakfast show I’ve been talking about many local events in the Adur district throughout the summer. In fact I’ve been so interested in them, I ended up attending a good many of them myself. I was invited to Lancing Football Club, and had even been to a 'Breakthrough for Breast Cancer Pink Pamper Party', where I got my nails painted, (I must say this was purely for entertainment purposes!). Once again a massive thank you to the local community for letting me wake you up in the mornings. I hope you’ve enjoyed the show as much as I enjoy making it! Until next time, Jimmy Willis

Poets Inspired by Shoreham

I

n a period around from the 1880s there was in poetry what was known as a minor romantic moment. Following in the footsteps of writers like Wordworth and Coleridge who had immortalised the landscape of the Lake District in verse, other poets now sought out picturesque locations where they could write about tranquil rural scenes and breathtaking views. Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-92) admired the view through the gap in the Downs towards Shoreham that he could see from the terrace of his home at Blackdown. He found this scene reminiscent of the rolling hills of Italy and wrote: You came, and looked, and loved the view Long known and loved by me. Green Sussex fading into blue, With a grey glimpse of sea. In a less tranquil frame of mind, he also wrote the melancholy ‘Rizpah’ in 1880, telling the true story of a robber of the mail coach who was hung for the crime. The young man’s grieving mother collected the bones from the foot of the gallows and buried them secretly within the hallowed ground of St. Nicholas churchyard. Movingly in the poem, she claims her son’s remains as her property as ‘they had moved in my side’. Among all the poets to visit Shoreham during this period, perhaps the most enthusiastic fan of the town was Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909). Swinburne had spent much of his childhood in the Isle of Wight where he had developed a love of the sea. On arriving in Shoreham he described the town as ‘one of the quaintest and strangest places I ever saw’ and made mention of the fact that Shoreham had one long street winding through it. In his letters he recalled how ‘like a boy parted from his home’ he longed to visit the town again. The church of St. Mary de Haura made a very strong impression upon the poet, for the beauty and grandeur of its structure and he wrote of it: ‘Strong as time and as Faith sublime Clothed round with shadows of hopes and fears Stands the shrine that has seen decline Eight hundred waxing and waning years.’ Swinburne was also inspired by the gentle, rolling

10

Downland and rural sights of the agricultural area, as well as the fishing boats of the harbour. In his writings to friends at this time, he made lively descriptions of Shoreham people, delighting in one particular child who was ‘the very smallest walking babu… carrying in its imperceptible arms the biggest and most self-satisfied baby — in long clothes — that ever I did see’. Elsewhere he mentions two girl children ‘who if one had been standing on the other’s shoulder (had that been possible) might have reached a little higher than my knee’ who begged for a ‘hayp’n’y’. Swinburne was of the opinion that any child born in Shoreham ‘as soon as it can toddle, assumes a nautical swagger or rolling walk which would upset the gravity of a bishop or a judge. It always claims the upper hand of the Shoreham adult, and is always made way for as it struts along the crown of the causeway, morally shoving its elders into the gutter, before it can well stand.’ Another poet who was struck by Shoreham’s grittier places and sights was John Davidson (1857-1909). The Scottish poet and former schoolmaster was known for the dingy urban images and colloquial expressions in his work. Between 1887 and 1888 Davidson stayed in Shoreham to recuperate after having suffered a nervous breakdown. If his Shoreham stay was supposed to rally his spirits it was not entirely successful with the poet s describing the town as ‘the most doleful place we have ever lived in, and the first effect of it was to deepen the misery and hypochondria that drove us out of London’. William Ernest Henley however painted a more picturesque scene describing ‘In Shoreham’s river hurrying down’, the wreck of a boat in the Adur. A close friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, Henley, who originated from Gloucester, had, had a foot amputated in his youth. He is also known for writing a poem about another river — the Thames, which he described as existing ‘Under a stagnant sky’. Henley was described as a ‘burly’ man by his friend Stevenson, who also went as far as to call him ‘boisterous and piratic’. The one-footed poet was also acknowledged by Stevenson to be in the inspiration behind the famous villain of his book ‘Treasure Island’. In this sense it can perhaps be claimed that Long John Silver once walked the streets of Shoreham. Judy Upton

Autumn is coming… W

ell the last month has proved to be better even having some sunshine, but I don’t think it could possibly have been worse. It’s amazing to see the garden react to even a little sunshine, with flowers springing into bloom. Just as we start getting better weather we start to see summer slipping past us as we head into September and the shorter days and lower temperatures. I always enjoy this time of year as the garden tries to hold on to the last of its summer glory, whilst the air is tinged with the freshness of the coming autumn mornings. At this time of year it’s a balance between trying to get the most out of what’s left in the summer garden and preparing for the coming season. That inevitably means plenty of work. In the vegetable garden, keep picking anything that is useable. Much will struggle to ripen, but a lot can be bought inside to help ripen it up. Tomatoes can be bought inside and put on a warm light window cill to help ripen them. Many of the best recipes from the garden involve using vegetables and fruits that haven’t ripened as an old method not to waste them. It’s worth the effort, since you’ve put so much time, money and hard work into growing them so do something with them. A little research in the library or the internet will throw up lots of recipes. There really is nothing nicer than opening a jar of piccalilli at Christmas and getting a taste of the summer from a homemade preserve. 14

It’s worth saving seeds from any flowers or vegetables you have grown. If you do make sure that the plant is healthy. Let the seed producing head dry out and collect the seeds in a dry dark container, such as an envelope. It’s a good way of saving money next year. It’s also worth taking cuttings of plants such as roses to try and grow them on over winter. It gives an interesting project to keep going over the winter months as you hibernate in the green house! Make use of any plant that has passed its best. If it’s an annual plant then make sure it goes into the compost bin Even at this time of year you can already look ahead to spring and start planting out bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses and tulips, as well as spring bedding such as pansies and wallflowers. As well as planting new bulbs, it’s worth lifting tubers such as gladioli and dahlias. They need to be cleaned off and placed in dry compost a frost proof place such as the garage or shed. Some people swear by doing this. Personally I never do it and mine produce excellent results every year. One real important job this year will be to replenish all the beds and pots in the garden after the long rains in the summer, so as you clear the beds make sure you get lots of compost dug in. Make the most of this time of year and get as many jobs in the garden done as possible. It’s a great time of year and its whilst it’s easier to do the jobs now rather in the colder weather, it allows you

to get out and make the most of what’s left of the late summer garden Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

Director H Reeves said “I’m thrilled to be directing Visiting Mr Green. It has been an astonishing success all over the world since its premiere in Massachusetts, in 1996, and I’m very happy to be bringing it to Southwick.” The part of Mr Green was originally played by Eli Wallach to much critical acclaim. It was also a resounding success when the part was played by Warren Mitchell on its UK tour during 2007-2008. H continues “Apart from its considerable wit and understanding, the strength of Visiting Mr Green is the way in which you become so totally absorbed in their lives. Neighbourhood Policing Keeping your bicycle safe

Bicycles can be some of the easiest vehicles for thieves and vandals to target. Here in Adur we have seen a rise in the number of cycles being stolen. You can protect yourself from becoming a victim by following some simple steps. • Get a good bike lock – D-Locks or combination locks are best. Use two locks. • Lock your bike to something secure, e.g. a bike rack or a lamppost. If there are no bike racks, contact your local council to ask if they can put some in. Always lock your bicycle, even if you are only leaving it for a couple of minutes • Make the lock and bike difficult to manoeuvre when parked. Keep the lock away from the ground and keep the gap between the bike and lock small. • Lock up removable parts (e.g. wheels) and take light fittings with you. • Take out insurance, either by extending your home contents insurance or through a separate policy. Cycling organisations and bike shops may offer specialist cover • Record and register your bike. Register your bicycle model, make and frame number. Contact your local police station for further advice. • Keep your bike in a secure garage or shed and keep the door locked. • Keep it out of public view. • Avoid isolated places. Leave your

bike where a potential thief can be seen. • Record and register your bike. Take a clear colour photograph of your bike and make a written record of its description, including any unique features, so that you can report it accurately if it is stolen. This will help prove it is yours if it is recovered by the police. • Register your bicycle model, make and frame number with a third party. (The frame number is often underneath the bottom bracket where the pedals attach, or on the frame under the seat.) Again this will help anyone who subsequently finds (or even buys) it to check whether it is stolen – and return it to you. Some registration schemes allow you to register individual bike parts that have serial numbers. Contact your local police station for further advice.

If you add an additional security mark or tag to your bike, this will again make it easier to identify as yours. Sometimes your local police will provide this service for free. The mark may be obvious, which should help deter thieves; or hidden, such as ultraviolet; or there may be a combination of both. Clearly visible marks should be securely applied. • A hidden mark or electronic tag is less likely to be identified and removed by thieves. • Make sure you don’t buy a stolen bike. By buying a stolen bike you are helping to support the illegal trade in bikes. The next stolen bike to be bought could be yours! By avoiding doing so you help make it less likely your bike will be stolen in the future. If you buy a bike from a legitimate seller, it is likely to be more reliable and you’ll probably be covered if anything does go wrong with it. • Do what you can to check it is from a legitimate outlet, and that they are sure it is not stolen. If it seems suspiciously cheap, ask yourself why. You may be able to check the ownership of a bike you intend to purchase by searching a property register such as Immobilise, or asking for proof of purchase or ownership. • Don’t create a market in which thieves can operate. If no one bought stolen bikes there would be no reason to steal them.

DON’T LEAVE YOUR BIKE UNLOCKED

Oven cleaning – a chore no more

T

he OVENU system is amazing! The OVENU environmentally-friendly valeting service involves dismantling key components of an oven (door, interior panels, fan and shelves) and placing them into design-registered equipment which uses non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. OVENU generates outstanding results in two to four hours, leaving your oven in showroom condition, with shining shelves, gleaming glass and an immaculate interior — free of grease, fat and carbon deposits. The most incredible feature of the OVENU system is that it is totally caustic free. This means that all areas of the oven, hob, hood and even microwaves can be cleaned safely. No unpleasant fumes from aerosols, no mess and no fuss Why not give Dave a call today on 0800 140 9800, and put OVENU to the test?
