SEPTEMBER 2013

Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Welcome to the September issue of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick and this month we mark our 8th year of the magazine. I cannot believe how the time has flown by since the first magazine was produced and I sincerely hope that you’ll continue to enjoy receiving it through your door each month. Did you know that in Latin, 'septem' means 'seven' and septimus means "seventh"; September was in fact the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 46 BC, when the first month changed from March to January? This year's summer was certainly enjoyable in the end, and as we enter into the Autumnal

months, I hope that it will continue to be warm. Autumn officially starts on 22nd September. This month's issue has the latest from Mark Oakley on autumn pruning. As well as that we have Judy Upton’s essay on George Moore the Irish Novelist – some interesting facts about the part Shoreham and Southwick played in his Novel 'Esther Waters' Page 8. We have all the local information on the What's On section and we have all of local tradesmen in the magazine able and willing to offer you their expertise. I hope that you have a lovely September. Warm Regards, Angela

REE HEALTH CHECKS are available to West Sussex residents aged between 40 and 74-years-old. Health checks last for half an hour and are for residents who do not have existing long-term conditions. They are available across the county at participating GP surgeries, pharmacies and community clinics. The checks assess someone’s risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease, and look at their lifestyle and levels of physical activity. Results are discussed with them and they are given personalised advice. These conditions are often avoidable, and a health check could help to identify any potential issues before a problem develops. Health checks are confidential and must be booked in advance. For further information, or to find out how to book a health check, visit the West Sussex Wellbeing website at: www.westsussexwellbeing.org.uk/topics/ more-topics/nhs-health-check or contact your local Wellbeing Service.

HIGHDOWN GARDENS – ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY

W

ORTHING’S HIGHDOWN GARDENS is one of the very best in the UK – and that’s official! The lovely 34,479 sq m (8.52 acres) garden established in 1907 by Sir Frederick Stern is among a record-breaking 1,447 parks and green spaces that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award. The gardens were created out of a chalk pit overlooking the Downs, where there was little soil and very unfavourable conditions for plant growth. Many of the plants — some rare — originally came from China and the Himalayan regions. In fact one of the trees brought in from south-west China 'Emmenopterys henryi' — planted by Sir Frederick Stern in 1907 — has been re-born from a cutting from the original tree by one of the gardeners Joyce Heward. The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

USSEX WILDLIFE TRUST has been flooded with enquiries since launching their pre-school woodland experience with a difference! Under-fives and their carers are encouraged to get involved in outdoor fun and games designed to explore the wonderful sights and sounds of the natural world. Based on our popular Forest School programme, three to five year-olds will learn basic bushcraft skills, gather around a fire circle for storytelling and to toast marshmallows, and enjoy a sing-song and games with a woodland theme. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Our Nature Tots Officer said: ‘By having fun and exploring the woodland children will learn to become confident in the outdoors and perhaps spark a life-long love of the natural world. Activities are linked to the seven stages of development to stimulate independent learning and team working – all of which will help © Fran Southgate with problem solving, physical development, creativity, and will boost communication skills.’ Why not come along between 10:00-12:00 on Wednesday 11 September and the five following Wednesdays until 16 October. Cost per child for the six weeks of Nature Tots is: Sussex Wildlife Trust members £40, non members £45. Please dress for the weather, we’ll go outside rain or shine. Places are limited and booking is essential. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Retirement – your options R

ETIRING IS A time of great change for people. It is something they look forward to, but when they get there it is a time of adjustment, starting to think in a different way, a gradual relaxing of the mind and letting go of all the stresses and strains work can bring. Many take to it like a duck to water, relishing the spare time and filling it with things they have always wanted to do. Someone said to me the other day, they are really busy, but unsure what they were busy with! This all sounds ideal and something to be relished. If you are someone who has saved for your retirement and planned financially you may find that when the time comes you will have a bewildering array of pensions to sort out. If you have personal pensions your providers will write to you offering you an income. Most pensions also offer a tax free lump sum, often of 25% of the fund value but then with a reduced income. Your providers also have to tell you that you have other options, which you definitely do. There are many avenues to take at this point and independent advice should be sought. In the past, the only option was to buy an annuity. This means that your pension money will be used to purchase a guaranteed income for the rest of your life from an insurance company. The trouble with this is that if you died early, the income you would have received could be far less than the lump sum you have given up to purchase the annuity. If you want to take no risk and know exactly where you stand annuities can work well; and perhaps if you are single. But what if you have a partner or spouse, especially if they are younger than you? What would happen if you died? The income may stop, or continue for a time then stop, or perhaps they would receive a much reduced benefit. All of this depends on how your annuity was set up in the first place, but the benefits are very likely to decrease or stop altogether. Some people psychologically don’t want to give their lump sum away for income, they would rather keep it invested . This is where another option comes in, a flexible or capped drawdown. You would take your tax free lump sum and the rest of the money would be invested. You could then

6

draw an income from the fund which is far more flexible. There are limits to the income you can take with capped drawdown, but as the name suggests flexible drawdown (available only to some) has no limits to the amount you can take from the fund. For bespoke advice on any of the above and to assess your retirement options, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer independent advice and would be very happy to assist.

Spring Days – George Moore P

REVIOUSLY THIS COLUMN has featured the novel ‘Esther Waters’ by the Irish novelist George Moore. This work of fiction weaves a tale of below-stairs life at a large country house, and is based on the home of Colville Bridger at Buckingham House in Old Shoreham. ‘Esther Waters’ was published in 1894, but an earlier novel by Moore, ‘Spring Days’, written in 1886-7, was set entirely in Southwick. As with ‘Esther Waters’, George Moore researched ‘Spring Days’ during his time staying as a guest of his friend Colville Bridger. The book depicts the life of a well-to -do landowning family and is based on his observations of the Bridgers, but it is most memorable as an accurate depictions of Southwick in the 1880s. Early in the book is a description of the town, viewed from the Northern side of the railway arch beside the station: ‘The road led under the railway embankment, and looking through the arched opening, one could see the dirty town, straggling along the canal or harbour, which runs parallel with the sea. A black stain was the hull of a great steamer lying on her side in the mud, but the tapering masts of yachts were beautiful on the sky, and at the end of a row of slatternly houses there were sometimes spars and rigging so strange and bygone that they suggested Drake and the Spanish main.’ There seems to be a ship run aground or disused in the harbour at this time and Moore is rather critical of the houses that presumably made up Albion Street at this time. Elsewhere we learn that the raised station platforms were reached by a flight of little wooden steps, rather than the concrete ramps of today. While the gritty realities of the harbour and town were not to Moore’s tastes, Southwick Green presented him with an altogether more appealing and tranquil scene. “How charming this is” a character remarks, “this old English green, the horse pond at one end, the various houses, the inn, the grocery business, the linen drying in that yard, the smith, and the wheelwright.” Old paintings of Southwick show this pond on the green with farm animals grazing around it. Elsewhere, the main character Willy, observes:‘All the

8

summer through the green is a fete of cricket. It is to the green the brass bands come on Saturday. On the green, bat and trap is played till the ball disappears in shadow. The green is common; horses and cows are turned out there. All profit by the green. It is on the edge of the green the housewives come to talk in the limpid moonlight. It is on the green the fathers smoke when the little cottage rooms are unbearable with summer heat. It is on the green that Mrs. Horlock walks with her pugs and the chemist's wife, to the enormous scandal of the neighbourhood.’ Another pictureque scene is evoked as a character remarks “How nice it would be to breakfast in the morning looking out on the green, to see the cocks and hens and all the children and all this English life!” The main action of the novel takes place among the then newly-built large houses of Southdown Road, just north of what is now Southwick Square. ‘To the right, facing the embankment, and overlooking some fields, is the famous Southdown road.’ This was long before the building of Southwick Square and library and health centre of course. In the 1880s there were still fields all the way between this road and the railway. Then, after all the pretty descriptions we learn that our main character Willy now hates Southwick. ‘He thought it ugly and vulgar’. ‘When I came here," he said, speaking rapidly, and as if he were speaking to himself, "the place was well enough; there was nothing but those wretched cottages facing the sea, the green, and a few cottages about it; but since those villas have been put up, Southwick has become unbearable. All my troubles," he murmured, "originated in the Southdown Road.’ The novel itself is an engaging portrait of the lives lived by rich ‘Southwickians’ as Moore dubs them, in a bygone era, but it also captures clearly the time when in Victorian Britain, increased house-building and the newly opened railway was starting to turn small rural communities like Southwick into burgeoning towns. Cattle would not be grazing on the Green for many more decades and nor would Southdown Road’s grand villas retain their unbroken view across fields to the railway for much longer. It’s strange to think, as today we lament the increasing spread of bricks and mortar over the area’s remaining green spaces, that even back in the 1880s, people were aware that their quiet village was changing into a bustling suburban area. A simpler way of life, based around farming and fishing, was soon to disappear forever. Judy Upton

Goodwood Revival Autumn 13th-15th September

Harvest

5th-15th September

The Goodwood Revival really is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing in the romantic time capsule of the world’s most authentic motor circuit. The Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

10

It is the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year. The Revival offers visitors the opportunity to leave the ‘modern world’ behind and join motor sport luminaries including Sir Stirling Moss, Richard Attwood, John Surteesand Derek Bell in an unabashed celebration of flat-out, wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic racetrack, untouched by the modern world.

The Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the south of England, running every Easter and for ten days in September. With local producers, growers, restaurants, bars and food retailers firmly at it’s heart, it’s a showcase of the fantastic food, drink and hospitality to be found in the city and surrounding Sussex. Rated by the New York Post in February 2012 as one of the world's leading local food events, the festival also runs and supports food activity throughout

Autumn pruning A

S WE HANG on to the last few weeks of summer, it is quite apparent from the shortening days and the slight chill in the mornings that we are heading into the change from Summer to Autumn. I always enjoy this time of year as things tend to slow down in the garden, allowing you to try and make the most of the last few warm days and what’s in the garden before they are gone for the year again.

12

Unfortunately it’s also a time to be looking forward with a myriad of jobs to do to get the ready for winter and also for next spring. A lot of the jobs will concentrate on tidying up and clearing away the plants that have given so much pleasure. One of the biggest jobs to do is autumn pruning for many of the plants and fruits. Raspberry canes will need pruning back and many flowering plants such as roses need suckers pruned out and many hedges can be trimmed back. Pruning allows you to direct the plants growth into areas of the plant you want so it produces a better display next year. It also allows light and air around the plant helping to cut down the risk of disease. Also try and remove as much of the trimmings you produce as possible. Any diseased trimmings should be thrown away or burnt. Never be afraid to have a go at pruning a plant, and if you are unsure there are many good books and articles on the internet that give clear guides for each plant. This summer has been a pretty good one and most plants have performed well. They have also taken a lot out of the soil, so as you clear away old plants, give beds a top up with new compost. Mature shrubs and trees will also benefit from a liquid feed to give them a boost before the winter. Lawns are often overlooked during the summer as they take a lot of work to water this time of year is perfect for carrying out any repairs as they are more likely to take in the milder damper weather. If you do nothing else to the lawn give it a dose of autumn feed to help boost it. If you are minded to it is an excellent time of year to scarify it to remove the dead grass. It will look pretty patchy at first, but will soon thicken up. Keeping an eye on next year try and save seeds from plants that you have enjoyed this year before you remove the dead plants. An easy alternative to collecting the seeds is to shake the heads of the dead plants over the areas you want the flowers. It is a more random way of doing it, but a lot less work and it’s always a surprise where they pop up the following year. Autumn will march on quickly, so enjoy the best that the garden still has to give going into the wonderful autumnal colours, but try to keep on top of the simple small jobs, whilst the better weather is still with us. Package holidays make financial sense At a time when you can't pick up a newspaper without reading an article predicting financial doom and gloom, many of us will naturally start thinking about tightening our belts.

H

OLIDAYS ARE CERTAINLY thought of as a luxury in this climate and our first instincts may be to shelve our annual break in favour of saving a few bob. But according to recent reports you may not need to sacrifice your couple of weeks in the sun just yet. Booking a package holiday could be a good idea for people looking to make the most of their pennies, according to travel company Thomsonfly. The weakened pound against the euro means that this could be a great time to book an all-inclusive holiday. Alan Pugh, head of planning and trading at Thomsonfly, says: "As additional costs in European destinations — food and beverage, for example — would be paid in euros exchanged from pounds, there has never been a better

time to book an all-inclusive holiday." Just think, a holiday where you hardly even need to bring any money with you means it will be easier to budget for your break. All-inclusive holidays usually have all meals, soft drinks and the majority of alcoholic drinks included in the booking price. If you're lucky, then you may even get sports and other activities thrown in too. There's never been a better time to be savvy with your money and to make sure you're getting all you can from it, especially if you're thinking of taking the whole family overseas. According to online comparison service travelsupermarket.com , families will gain from taking an all-inclusive package holiday. That's probably because on any other kind of break the basics

such as food, drinks and transport can really see you blow your holiday budget in no time. Kayte Williams, holiday travel manager at travelsupermarket. com, says: "Families have the comfort of knowing everything is included — they are met by a rep when they get to their resort and they have somebody to contact within the resort if they need help." The director of money transfer company Travelex, John Nicholas, also says that Britons who have already booked their holidays to countries using the euro as currency such as Spain and France, are advised to get the most out of their holiday budget by pre-ordering money. "It's very difficult to predict currency, so we would always recommend customers to prepare for their trip in advance and pre-order currency online to ensure the best rates," he says. But Nicholas also points out that people hoping to make their money go further may want to look outside the traditional eurozone holiday region this summer. Other countries outside Europe which could offer holidaymakers good returns on their sterling include South Africa, the US and Dubai. You'd be in good company if you do decided to travel a little further. Halifax Travel Insurance recently published report stating that 2.5 million Britons take package holidays to exotic destinations every year. So you needn't worry too much about saving for that rainy day when there may be a very sunny one just around the corner.

Animal Farm

You’ve heard the name before but do you know the story? Well now is your chance to find out.

M

ENTION ANIMAL FARM and it takes many people right back to their childhood. Memories of sitting in a classroom, come flooding back as we hear that this is a story in disguise. Is it about farm animals or a revolution? Animal Farm has long been a favourite on school curriculums and no doubt will be for many more to come. 26

Written by George Orwell Animal Farm has been adapted by Ian Wooldridge and will be performed by the Southwick Players this September at The Barn Theatre in Southwick. It is also their entry into the Brighton and Hove Arts Council Drama Awards 2013. The title was originally “Animal Farm: A Fairy Story”

and was described by Orwell as deceptively simple to read. Fuelled by a vision of Utopia, where the animals own the land and are no longer slaves of humans, the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm overthrow their human masters. Led by pigs (Snowball and Napoleon) they strive to begin a new life of freedom based on the

principle that “All animals are equal”. For a while their dreams come true and all the animals are truly equal. But as the clever pigs’ behaviour becomes increasingly human they soon learn how to extend their own power and the other animals are left wondering whether the real enemy is the farmyard...... “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin. Director Tony Bright said “Orwell, a democratic socialist, wrote the book between 1943 – 1944 when wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Joseph Stalin was held in high esteem in Britain, a fact he hated. He was a critic of Stalinism and believed it to be a brutal dictatorship, enforced by a reign of terror.” Tony continued by saying “The cast is made up of adult and youth members and as a regular on School curriculums this show is a must for teenagers interested in English literature.” The show is being set on the floor of The Barn Theatre which means the audience will be right on top of the action. After the Friday evening performance the audience are also invited to stay and hear the verdict of the Arts Council Adjudicator. So why not pop into the bar to get some refreshments and settle down and relax to hear his views on the show. This will be attended by the director, cast and crew. Animal Farm will be performed at the Barn Theatre, Southwick from Wednesday 25th – Saturday 28th September 2013, starting at 7.45pm. Tickets £10.00/£11.00, available from the Box Office 01273 597094, or on-line at www. southwickplayers.org.uk (no booking fee). To advertise call: 01273 452065
