SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

SEPTEMBER 2015

Editor’s comment Welcome to the September issue of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick. This month we celebrate the 10th year of our magazine and its nice to see how far we have come from that first issue all those years ago. Despite a few days of rain, summer has been very enjoyable? Let’s hope that the warmth of the summer months will spread into the autumn. In this month’s issue you can read all about the Ferry across the Adur by Judy Upton and the latest from Mark Oakley on what to do this September in preparation for the cooler months of the year. Inside this issue we also have local charities such as St Barnabas and how you get involved and become a Community Champion. If you also have some spare time and would like to volunteer in helping another local charity then the Barn Box Office is would like to hear from you. This year, on the 25th of September, you can help local charity for the smaller animal rescue centres and organisations who care for sick and vulnerable animals by buying a nose ‘Pose with a Nose’ and help save animals. See page 20. On a final note I would like to thank all our contributors for this month. I hope you enjoy reading about all the events and activities taking place in Shoreham and Southwick. If you would like to have your event or activity in the October edition, please send copy by the 8th of September. We will endeavour to put it in the spotlight! I hope that you have a lovely September. Warm regards Angela

Coastline Harmony: they love to sing… can you join them?

BECOME A COMMUNITY COMPANION! St Barnabas House is looking for people who would be willing to donate their time on a regular weekly basis to volunteer and become part of the hospice’s established Community Companion service. St Barnabas House Community Companions are volunteers who provide social and practical support to patients and their carers and make a significant contribution to help the hospice care for individual patients in their own homes. Companions can provide a friendly face and a ‘listening ear’, assist with taking patients shopping or undertake simple household tasks such as ironing or washing up. One of the most valuable ways a Community Companion can help is simply by sitting with the patient. Some patients are too poorly for interaction, however just having the Community Companion there enables the carer to take some much needed respite, provides them with reassurance in their absence and the patient has someone available should they require support. No previous experience of volunteering or caring for people is required as full training will be given. If you’d like to find out more about how you could become a Community Companion, there is an introduction morning on the 29th September at St Barnabas House starting at 10am. Email volunteers@stbh.org.uk to book a place or alternatively call 01903 706315.

EXPLORING SHOREHAM’S WWI ARMY CAMP

Coastline Harmony is a female a cappella chorus singing four-part harmony in barbershop style. Their repertoire comprises popular songs from the 50s through to the 80s and their pièce de résistance is Bohemian Rhapsody. They perform at shows, social events, dinners, charity functions, homes for the elderly, family celebrations, etc. They have sung at some very special charity events including the Mayor’s Variety Performance at the Brighton Centre and a carol concert at the Royal Pavilion. Their inspirational director, Miguel Fernandes, is so proud that he’s taking them to his home city of Porto this autumn for the start of a short performance tour in Portugal. They currently have around 35 members of all ages, and new members are always given a warm and friendly welcome. They rehearse every Thursday evening from 7.15 to 9.45 at Southwick Christian Community Church, Roman Crescent, Southwick BN42 4TY. To find out more visit: www.coastlineharmony.co.uk, where you can hear excerpts from some of the numbers in their repertoire; or call Sheila Harland, 01273 415952, for a chat or email: coastlineharmony@outlook.com. They look forward to singing with you. 4

Discover what went on when Shoreham was home to a World War I army camp during a talk in the town’s library. The Training for War: Exploring Shoreham Army Camp 19141919 talk on 3 September will tie in with an exhibition on the same subject being held at The Marlipins Museum in the High Street, Shoreham. The exhibition will be on display from 2 September until 3 October. Smaller pop-up versions will appear at Shoreham Farmers’ Market and other venues to be announced. In September 1914 over 12,000 men arrived in the small coastal town of Shoreham to sleep under canvas on the South Downs and start military training at Shoreham Army Camp. Over the next five years over 100,000 men would pass through Shoreham Army Camp. They came from all walks of life and from all over Britain, Canada and even South Africa. The ‘Training for War’ project run by Worthing Museum in collaboration with Worthing College and supported by the Heritage Lottery fund has been exploring the history of this army camp. In this talk Gail Mackintosh will reveal the stories the project has brought together and discovered about daily life, entertainment and the local reaction to the recruits, convalescents and colonials of Shoreham’s WW1 Army Camp. Training for War: Exploring Shoreham Army Camp 1914-1919, Thursday 3 September, 7.00pm, Shoreham Library. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Can you let your property and move?

O

VER THE PAST few months I have dealt with many people who want to move, but want to retain their current property and let it out. Many people see property as a long term investment and an asset they want to keep hold of, especially if they live in a sought after area. If you have plenty of equity this can often be achieved, the deposit for the new property can be raised by arranging a “buy to let” mortgage on your current place. There are limits to how much you can borrow, normally 75% of your property value. Your current mortgage would have to be redeemed and the excess capital used as towards your deposit. If you don’t need to raise any capital, and you have a deposit independent of borrowing further money, many residential lenders will give ‘permission to let’. This means that you can keep your mortgage where it is and your lender will allow you to let it out. Some lenders will increase your rate if you do this, but many will allow you to keep the same deal.

If you don’t need to raise any capital, and you have a deposit independent of borrowing further money, many residential lenders will give ‘permission to let’. This means that you can keep your mortgage where it is and your lender will allow you to let it out. So, once you know you can achieve the deposit, you will probably need to find a mortgage for your new property. This new lender needs to be comfortable with the let property in the background. All residential lenders will have criteria to decide whether they will ignore the let property, but assuming they do, they will base the new mortgage on your earned income with normal lending policy applying. The larger the deposit you can raise for the new property, the better the rate you will achieve on that mortgage. However, if you borrow more on the buy to let to increase the deposit, the rate on the let property will go up. So, there is a balance to be struck as to how much you borrow on each property. An independent adviser can look at the deals available and advise you on the best way to set things up. For both of the mortgages, the criteria varies greatly, so 6

choosing the right lenders is crucial to making this scenario work. Sometimes, there is a choice of deals, other times it literally boils down to just one or two who can lend the amount you require. There’s no doubt about it, if you are trying to “let to buy” it is crucial to look at the whole market. If you are thinking of moving and would like to look at your options please feel free to call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. We offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to help. FERRY ACROSS THE ADUR

I

N THE MIDDLE Ages there was a ferryboat service between the western end of Shoreham High Street and Lancing. In those days much of what is now South Lancing was still covered by the sea, and it is believed that the ferry would have landed its passengers considerably north of where the Norfolk Bridge now stands. The first mention of a ferry from Shoreham High Street to Lancing is in 1209 when the burgesses of Shoreham are recorded as having paid King John for the privilege of operating a ferry. No bridge crossed the Adur until Bramber, so the ferry was of great importance to trade. The ferry was governed by a number of rules and regulations and was forbidden to carry certain passengers and goods, so that ‘no horse above the value of three marks, nor any dog, nor any unknown messenger, burgess or merchant, shall have passage without the King’s writ and unless they are carrying no message except it be to the honour of the King.’ Even if a passenger could satisfy all the stipulations, the river crossing by ferryboat was not always a pleasant or easy one. Eight hundred years ago the shingle bank of Shoreham beach did not exist, so there was nothing to act as a breakwater, and the boat was exposed to the full force of the tides. In stormy weather or gale force winds, a large number of travellers made the long trip up to Bramber Bridge in preference to risking a choppy crossing on the ferry. In spite of the problems of unpredictable tides and weather, the master of the ferry would have earned a decent amount of money from the toll charges paid by his passengers. For the sum of around four shillings a year, paid to the owner of the rights to run the ferry, the ferryman could look to make an annual £20 profit, which in those days was a tidy sum. In the 13th century, William Bernehus owned the ferry from Shoreham. In his old age he decided to increase his favour with God, by offering the prior of Lewes free passage for the priory’s monks across the river. In return the priory would observe an annual day in his honour. William Bernehus’s only child Agnes married Roger de Hyda, who worked the ferry on behalf of his elderly father-in-law. When the old man died however, and Roger Hyda took over the ownership of the ferry, he resented providing frequent and free ferry crossings for the monks and their goods. He decided that the answer was to sell on the rights

8

to the tolls to a man called John Gatesden, while he himself still continued to work the boat. The next time the prior and the monks took the ferry, Roger Hyda refused to bring the boat to land until the prior paid him 40 shillings. The prior was furious and Roger Hyda was summoned to Lewes to answer for breach of contract. At the hearing the prior produced the deed signed by William Bernehus, and insisted that it also bound his heir to give the monks free passage. Roger Hyda countered, saying the responsibility was no longer his, as he no longer owned either the ferry route or the boat itself, as he had sold them to John Gatesden. This defence took the Prior by surprise and he had no defence ready to contradict it. The case collapsed and the monks had to pay to cross the river between Shoreham and Lancing once more. In 1263 Thomas de Brom granted the ferry rental rights to Walter de la Hyde and his wife Joan, for the price of 40 marks and a small annual rental that consisted of giving him a pair of white gauntlets, or one penny each Easter. In 1316 William Paynell, son-in-law of John Gatesden was forced due to poverty to grant the rights to the ferry to the prior of Hardham near Pulborough. The prior in return agreed hold daily prayers for the Paynell family, and presumably the monks from this priory were now the ones enjoying free crossings while those belonging to the Lewes one had to pay. The days of a ferry operation at this site became a thing of the past when the Norfolk Suspension Bridge opened on May 1st, 1833. William Tierney Clarke, who had designed the Hammersmith Suspension Bridge in London, designed the Norfolk Bridge with Captain Samuel Brown who was also responsible for Brighton’s Chain Pier. W. Ranger of Brighton undertook the masonry construction, and two magnificent stone statues of a lion and a horse topped its arches. The press of the day called the Norfolk Bridge ‘an elegant structure, reflecting much credit both on the architect and builder’. Tolls were still levied to cross the Norfolk Bridge until 1927 however. The original Norfolk Bridge would be replaced twice, once in 1923 and again in 1987 with the present concrete structure. Summer to autumn A

S WE HANG on to the last few weeks of summer, it is quite apparent from the shortening days and the slight chill in the mornings that we are heading into the change from Summer to Autumn. I always enjoy this time of year as things tend to slow down in the garden, allowing you to try and make the most of the last few warm days and what’s in the garden before they are gone for the year again.

12

Unfortunately it’s also a time to be looking forward with a myriad of jobs to do to get the ready for winter and also for next spring. A lot of the jobs will concentrate on tidying up and clearing away the plants that have given so much pleasure. One of the biggest jobs to do is autumn pruning for many of the plants and fruits. Raspberry canes will need pruning back and many flowering plants such as roses need suckers pruned out and many hedges can be trimmed back. Pruning allows you to direct the plants growth into areas of the plant you want so it produces a better display next year. It also allows light and air around the plant helping to cut down the risk of disease. Also try and remove as much of the trimmings you produce as possible. Any diseased trimmings should be thrown away or burnt. Never be afraid to have a go at pruning a plant, and if you are unsure there are many good books and articles on the internet that give clear guides for each plant. This summer has been a pretty good one and most plants have performed well. They have also taken a lot out of the soil, so as you clear away old plants, give beds a top up with new compost. Mature shrubs and trees will also benefit from a liquid feed to give them a boost before the winter. Lawns are often overlooked during the summer as they take a lot of work to water this time of year is perfect for carrying out any repairs as they are more likely to take in the milder damper weather. If you do nothing else to the lawn give it a dose of autumn feed to help boost it. If you are minded to it is an excellent time of year to scarify it to remove the dead grass. It will look pretty patchy at first, but will soon thicken up. Keeping an eye on next year try and save seeds from plants that you have enjoyed this year before you remove the dead plants. An easy alternative to collecting the seeds is to shake the heads of the dead plants over the areas you want the flowers. It is a more random way of doing it, but a lot less work and it’s always a surprise where they pop up the following year. Autumn will march on quickly, so enjoy the best that the garden still has to give going into the wonderful autumnal colours, but try to keep on top of the simple small jobs, whilst the better weather is still with us. Pins and Needles! This month Louis Jones looks at acupuncture, which is an alternative treatment, but is becoming more popular. There can be many benefits to this type of treatment, with its biggest focus being to get rid of pain.

A

CUPUNCTURE IS AN ancient form of medicine that has been around for thousands of years. Its literal latin translation is “Acus” meaning “Needle” and “Punctura” meaning “to puncture”. It involves the insertion of tiny needles through the skin at strategic points in your body, in order to stimulate so called meridian points.

The Chinese method bases its theory around energy called Qi, which flows through the body along pathways known as meridians. Illness, or pain can occur when there is a block or disruption to the flow of energy along your body’s meridians, according to acupuncturists. By placing needles into the meridian points, where there may be a block of energy, we can release this stagnant or blocked energy and help the body reach equilibrium. Another form of acupuncture, which is more commonly used in Western medicine, is trigger point acupuncture or “dry needling”. This involves placing a needle into an area of muscle spasm, which can be responsible for referring pain. For example, it is often to see people complaining of sciatica (pain in the back of the leg) and can be misdiagnosed. Acupuncture is very effective at treating this type of problem and can take minutes to see results.

What do we treat with Acupuncture?

We mainly treat pain with acupuncture. This could be headaches caused by muscle tension, or radiating or referred pain being triggered by a muscle spasm as mentioned above. We treat trigger points often mistaken for problems like sciatica. We also use acupuncture to treat chronic conditions such as arthritis or for acute problems such as sports injuries.

16

Does it hurt?

Most people we treat with acupuncture have reservations or concerns if it is their first time. The thought of needles can make some quite squeamish, but the truth is acupuncture can be a lot more comfortable than some deep tissue massage techniques. There should be a sensation felt with acupuncture called “De Qi”, which is an achy type sensation, that most people find quite tolerable, if acupuncture is to be successful.

Is it suitable for everyone?

There are questions that will be asked before we can decide if acupuncture is suitable for you. FRIDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER

POSE WITH A NOSE DAY W ETNOSE SUPPORTS THE smaller animal rescue centres and organisations caring for sick or vulnerable animals, where there are limited or insufficient funds to carry out the work they do. Many of the larger animal charities have a great deal of financial support, whereas smaller, less well known organisations struggle to raise adequate funding and do not have access to funds as other charities do. Wetnose has a valuable and essential place in helping animals that otherwise would not receive the care that they need, by placing funds where they are most needed. National Wetnose Day is an annual event to raise funds and awareness, as was Red Nose Day was created for Humans…well Wetnose is for animals! It is ironic that whilst some 47% of UK households have a pet of some sort but no national fund raising initiative has been developed. Wetnose Animal Aid is correcting that by creating the Wetnose Day event to happen on September. Every year, thousands of animals need new homes, and due to the vast numbers of homeless animals, there are simply not enough homes to go round. Over 30 dogs are put to sleep every day in the UK due to lack of space in rescue centres. The 2013/2014 annual Stray Dogs Survey released by Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, reveals a shocking

20

111,986 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up by Local Authorities across the UK over the last 12 months, equating to a staggering 307 stray dogs being found every day. That’s without cats, horses, primates, parrots, snakes, rabbits and wildlife that need rescuing and help too! These rescue centres are experiencing a noticeable increase in animals being ‘dumped’ on them, as owners continue for various reasons not to be able to keep their animals. That equation does not balance, and therefore this Wetnose Day is an important event to help raise serious levels of funds to get the balance back and help rescue centres with the ever increase in sick animals being bought in for care, behavioural problems or treatment. Animal Aid will invite schools, groomers, vets surgeries, pet companies to join in too as they need more veterinary nurses, specialist vets, farriers as well as marine vets and animal experts in general. This is one way of helping to educate children by having fun and making them aware that animals are an important part of our daily lives, especially pets and our wildlife. Good computer support from The Good Computer Co.

I

F YOU’VE BEEN to a council tip recently, you’ll have seen so much electronic equipment that is basically in good condition but just ‘last years model’, the tired out husband, the old banger etc etc. As much as the Good Computer Co like shiny new things, beautiful products designed to look gorgeous. They disagree wholeheartedly with their built-in obsolescence. Do you just want a Computer you can access the Internet and email on, that will last a long time, that is lovingly put together and guaranteed, rather than something that looks lovely and lasts ten minutes? “In my day, we made do and mend”, perhaps more than ever as the landfills get fuller, and the wage packets get smaller we need to bring that concept back? Rich has worked in the IT industry for sixteen years, from small firms to multinational organisations, and has been working as PCskillsonwheels and now The Good Computer Co. for five years. He is a qualified Microsoft and Citrix and Apple engineer and prides himself on his ability to simplify computer jargon, so that you don’t feel ‘blinded by science’. He has often been told about his endless supply of patience. He has incredible passion for what he does! Further details can be found on their website at www. goodcomputers.org or by phone 07738939321 (Rich) or

24

numbers reported benefitting from improvements to stress reduction and relaxation; posture; breathing; memory; energy; brain function; communication and teamwork; networking; teambuilding; enhanced sense of community; increased personal confidence; a creative outlet to balance work and life; and reward, enjoyment and satisfaction. Throughout the year members regularly present and participate in numerous events in a variety of traditional and innovative venues, which have included the Royal Albert Hall. His London appearances have included The Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, St John’s Smith Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St Paul’s Covent Garden, and St James’ Piccadilly. Peter’s energy and vision has transformed choirs and enabled individuals of all ages and abilities to discover the enjoyment and benefits that can be gained from experiencing live performance. Farrant said “Potential new singers are warmly invited to attend one of our FREE Open Rehearsals.
