We also have several charities in this months issue Santander helping to raise funds for the Shoreham Dog Trust — read all about it on page four; plus St Baranabas, and other hospices, are promoting the Big Hospice Get Together on page 10. These are just some of the things inside this issue. As always our What’s On Pages has lots of activities and events this month for you to take part in. On a final note, I would like to thank all our contributors for this month. I hope you enjoy reading about all the events and activities taking place in Shoreham and Southwick. ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST

SANTANDER SHOREHAM DONATES

Wick Theatre Company’s next production is Dario Fo’s controversial farce Accidental Death of an Anarchist. In its first two years of production, it was seen by over half a million people. It has since been performed all over the world and is widely recognised as a classic of modern drama. A sharp and hilarious satire on political corruption, it concerns the case of an anarchist railway worker, who, it was claimed ‘fell’ to his death from a police headquarters window in 1969. Performance dates at the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick, are Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 September, at 7.45pm, Tickets cost £11.00 from the Box Office on 01273 597094, or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk This is Wick’s entry to the Brighton & Hove Arts Council Drama Awards 2016.

Santander Shoreham by Sea branch had a visitor from the Shoreham Dogs Trust rehoming centre. Naomi Rhymes (pictured left) who is the Support Relations Officer for the centre brought in one of their successfully rehomed dogs Cassie for the afternoon. They were there to collect a cheque from the Shoreham Santander branch for the money raised by the staff who helped raise donations at the Dogs Trust’s recent Fun Day held on the 3rd of July.

FORT BOOST

Shoreham fort was given an extra boost this week towards its goals in finishing the Nissen Hut education space. The funds raised by members of Elite Action Games (EAG) Airsoft Worthing site were boosted by a further £500 to bring the total to £1010.65. One of the sites players James Wingate who works as the Mortgage Adviser at Santander’s Shoreham branch utilised the company’s community project matched funding scheme to boost the total. The Players and Marshalls from EAG assisted at the open day held recently to raise awareness of the regeneration project to bring the ancient monument back to its former 1857 glory. By operating a re-enactment firing range they helped the children to experience what it was like defending the fort from the Victorian age through to World War 2. The money raised is being used to finish the build of a Nissen hut (a tunnel-shaped hut made of corrugated iron with a cement floor). This will be utilised as an education centre for visitors and school trips to share the important and significant local history of this fort in protecting English shores from invasion. Jimbo Torrent site manager of EAG Airsoft commented “It was a pleasure to be able to help at such an important historical site and support the fantastic work they are doing here. Having one of our regular players also be able to contribute and use his firms scheme just further helps the fort reach their goal.” Gary Baines the Chairman of Friends of Shoreham Fort commented “We would like to extend our gratitude for all the hard work that Elite Action Games contributed to helping raise funds for the fort and also to Santander for its generous donation. This money was just what we needed to be able to finish the Nissen hut build and will be utilised throughout the year to shelter our visitors and dedicated volunteers“ www.shorehamfort.co.uk 4

The staff who attended were James Wingate (pictured centre with Branch Manager Clare Watson right), Natalie Brown, Nicola Burroughs and Catherine Forbes as well as family & friends to offer support by giving out leaflets and directions to visitors. Between the staff they raised £2840.10 throughout the day’s activities. Having applied to the Santander’s community project department James managed to get that raised by a further £2500 to be give a total of £5340.10 towards the care of the lost and abandoned dogs at the local centre. James Wingate “It’s fantastic we were able to raise the amount we did which is the highest yet out of the times we’ve helped out at this event. We’re all really proud of ourselves as it was such a busy day but all being big dog lovers makes it extra special and worth it. With the added £2500 Santander has also contributed for our efforts we know what a huge difference it will make and we’re really pleased we could offer them this added support.” Naomi Rhymes “We were absolutely delighted that James and the rest of the team at Santander chose the help Dogs Trust Shoreham this year at our annual Fun Day. It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for our centre and all the staff and volunteers work hard to make sure everyone attending has fun. Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, so raising funds for the dogs in our care is vital and having the support of Santander’s community project made a huge difference to the total amount we raised on the day.“ To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

How is the rate cut affecting your investments?

O

N 8TH AUGUST the Bank of England (BoE) cut the bank base rate from 0.5% to an all-time low of 0.25%. This may be good news for borrowers, but equally bad news for savers who have already endured many years of historically low interest rates. This is combined with BoE predictions that inflation (CPI) will be 0.8% for 2016, 1.9% in 2017, rising to 2.4% in 2018. If these projections are correct, this means that people relying on cash investments such as building society and interest paying bank accounts could see the real value of their money reducing over time. In recent times with the introduction of a tax free interest allowance of £1,000 per annum some have abandoned their normal arrangements of a cash ISA and opted instead for a non ISA account which offers a higher rate of return. Certain banks have been offering current accounts with higher interest rates on balances up to a certain limit. With careful planning some have managed to obtain a higher rate on an element of their savings. These accounts seem to come with caveats, such as the requirement to pay a regular amount in each month and monthly standing orders being paid out. It often takes a bit of juggling but many have found this worthwhile to achieve a higher rate on their savings. Some people have money invested in fixed rate accounts which they secured before the rate fall. A higher rate would have been secured at the time, but once the term ends it may be difficult to find a new rate at a similar level. It certainly seems like hard work for cash investors as they scratch around for a return on their money. Although many people in this situation are retired and have more time, this can seem like a job in itself. It is a very difficult situation and could push people to move to higher risk investments in order to see some returns. Some have considered transferring cash ISAs to a stocks and shares ISA. Although “stocks and shares” sounds high risk, the term does not necessarily mean that all of your investment is in the stock-market. It is possible to arrange a stocks and shares ISA at a lower risk level. The investment value will fluctuate, but at a lower variance when compared to stocks and shares. Over time, however, the investment could possibly provide a higher level of 6

growth than you can achieve in a cash investment. This may be worth considering. If you would like advice on any of the above issues, or need independent financial advice please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. The River Adur

T

HE ROOT OF the name ‘Adur’ for our local river isn’t entirely clear. Some historians say the name derives from the Celtic word ‘Dwyr’ meaning river and the river was first called this in the 1600s. Others say the name Adur dates only from the seventeenth century and is based on the name of the Roman Fort, Portus Adurni that was mistakenly believed to have been at Shoreham. The river had previously rather unflatteringly been known as the Sore, and Shoreham, as Soreham. Other names at various times used for the Adur are Alder, The Beeding River and the Horton. In Roman and Norman times the wide river estuary was close to Bramber Castle. Before the Norman Conquest, an ancient route between Southampton and Canterbury crossed the Adur at Beeding, by ferry. Later a bridge was built just East of St. Mary’s House, Bramber, over what was then the main channel of the river and the causeway. It then continued crossing over a second bridge, at the site of the current road bridge between Bramber and Beeding. Once too, the Adur had a large port at Steyning. Caen stone was brought in by sea for construction work on both Bramber Castle and Steyning Church, as well as St Mary’s Church in Shoreham. A wharf at Bramber was close to what is now St Mary’s House. Until the end of the 15th century the Adur and the Arun met where they reached the sea, which was at Lancing. The Adur is made of two separate arms, the Western and Eastern Adur, that meet just west of Henfield at Betley Bridge. The Western Adur has its source near Slinfold, from where it flows around the village of Coolham and then through Stapley. Here it meets up with Lancing Brook before travelling on through the countryside to West Grinstead and Knepp Castle. The Western part of the Adur is tidal as far north as Bines Bridge near Bines Green, which is South of West Grinstead. The Baybridge Canal at West Grinstead uses part of the Adur’s course. Opened in 1826 it was three and a half miles long and intended originally to connect the South Coast with London. It was used to import Welsh slate and coal from Newcastle, but was closed in 1875 as the railway took over its role. A disused lock is still there today. Beeding Cement works also used the Adur for transport for a while, carrying clay to the works from where it was quarried at Small Dole. A pipeline was later built to

8

serve this function however. The Eastern arm of the Adur has its source at Ditchling Common in East Sussex. It crosses the county line and joins with another stream at Twineham. At Shermanbury the Cowfold Stream feeds the eastern Adur. The Normal Tide Limit here is just below the footbridge near Shermanbury Church, although a weir above the confluence with the Western Adur means that only the highest tides reach here. Up to the early 1800s boats could navigate to Mock Bridge where what is now the A281 crosses the Adur. Ship building activities took place along the Adur at Shoreham and until the end of the 19th century; a ship building business existed as far north up the river as Beeding Bridge. From west of Henfield the two branches of the river meet, before flowing between Upper Beeding and Bramber, past Coombes, through a gap in the South Downs near Lancing College where the Adur is further fed by the Ladywell stream. From here of course it continues down into Shoreham. The mouth of the Adur is now two miles from Shoreham town centre due to long shore drift, and a permanent harbour was constructed here in 1821. In Medieval times salt-marshes along the Adur were an important source of salt, and the river silts provided rich pastures for livestock. The river often flooded however and various embankments were built including those required by the 1807 Adur Navigation Act that enabled banks to be raised to make the river navigable by ship to West Grinstead. Heading into autumn

I

S IT REALLY September already? It’s one of those months that can be a wonderful bonus of an extra-long summer, but with the first tinges of cooler mornings and autumnal tinges of oranges and reds starting to show. I have to confess it is one of my favourite months, but it’s always tinged with a little trepidation as we start heading on the slide towards the darker colder days. Let’s hope this one keeps us feeling like summer is going on for ever.

10

It’s the time of year in the garden when we desperately try to keep everything going for as long as possible but have to start looking to change things and get ready for winter. At this time of year, even if the rainfall is still low the plants start to benefit from damper nights and mornings with dew becoming more frequent. That means you can start to ease back a little on the watering. It’s also a good time to give everything an extra boost to help plants recover from the energy they have spent producing the wonderful displays or fruit. Liquid feeds, booster tablets or extra compost will always be gratefully accepted by plants and will help to strengthen them up for the winter period. Be realistic as well, once you get to the point of no return with plants and fruit. Don’t keep letting them produce buds or fruit that will never bloom or ripen. Remove them from the plant and give it a chance to store up some of its energy. You will be repaid next year Lawns normally take a real beating over the summer. They go through dry periods when they struggle, and everything from being used as Wembley by the children, to having garden furniture left semi-permanently on them has an effect on them. A lawn is no different to any other display of plants in the garden. It’s simply a collection of small plants, close together. Give them a dose of a weed and feed to help improve it and re-sow or re-turf any bald spots. If you do keep getting bald spots in the same place, try and look at the cause for a long term solution. If the area keeps getting scalped by the mower, then lower the level of the area slightly. Sometimes though there is no solution. I often have clients who insist they want lawn in particular areas, such as permanently shady or boggy areas. Sometimes you just have to accept that mother nature will not be beaten and give up graciously and look at alternative ideas. Whatever you do in the garden at this time of year, the most important thing is to make the most of it. The light and the good weather really do slip away quite quickly and with it so does the full effect of the garden. It is a wonderful time as the seasons slowly mingle from one to the other and it’s too good to miss, so get out there and find something to do, even if its sitting down for 10 minutes, catching your breath and letting the world slow down. SUNSHINE DAY NURSERY

OPEN DAY

Saturday 24 September 2016 10am – 2pm

S

UNSHINE DAY NURSERY in Tarmount Lane, Shoreham is a friendly and inviting nursery offering a stimulating and welcoming environment for children from birth to five years. Conveniently located in the centre of Shoreham, and open from 8am to 5:45pm five days per week, the nursery is an excellent childcare choice for working families in the local area. There will be lots of fun on offer at the nursery Open Day on Saturday 24 September 2016 between 10am and 2pm. Families with young children are invited to drop by to experience some great play activities and meet the experienced and caring staff team. The nursery has a fantastic outdoor play space which has been specifically designed with the needs of young children in mind. All children, including babies, spend time outside every day. Inside, the nursery is separated into four units which allow children to make friends with others of the same age. Babies are cared for in their own intimate room. Children of all ages benefit from extra classes every week; the youngest children enjoy baby yoga whilst Pre-school aged children have French and Ballet lessons. All children have fun at the monthly music class. These classes are free so that all children can enjoy them. The nursery has recently started using 12

an online journal called ‘Tapestry’ which records all the learning and fun activities that the children enjoy. The system is secure and allows parents to access photos, video clips and observations made by the staff about their child’s time at Sunshine. Staff will be demonstrating Tapestry at the Open Day on 24 September. Tapestry has revolutionised the way parents, carers and even grandparents find out about what their child has been doing at nursery. Parents of a two year old child said “Before the nursery started using Tapestry I didn’t realise just how much my child was doing at nursery, but now I can log on at lunch time and see what he has been up to that morning. There might be pictures of him doing cooking and art activities or playing outside with his friends, it’s brilliant and very reassuring.” Nursery staff begin recording observations from a child’s first day at the nursery and the parents can then log in to Tapestry and see how well their child is settling in. This can be very reassuring for parents and help them feel at ease as starting nursery is a big step for parents too! As one parent said “It's so lovely seeing what he gets up to during the day and to see how happy he is. We take a lot of comfort knowing how well you all look after him. Tapestry also allows his

grandparents, who all live abroad, to be involved as well. We love that we can communicate back and forth with the nursery for you to see what he does at home. It's a fantastic addition to your services and we look forward to using it more and more!” Parents are also learning more about the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum as Tapestry allows Nursery Practitioners to link their observation on each child’s development with the EYFS areas of learning and development. Parents can be of enormous benefit in this by also uploading their own observations onto tapestry so that the key person at the nursery knows even more about each child’s likes and interests and their individual needs can be fully met. Parents are sometimes amazed to see what their child is capable of doing, as one parent recently commented “Wow! Did he really paint that by himself? I'm very impressed! We don't have a red car and that's the second time he's mentioned it.....perhaps we need to get a new one?!!” Another parent commented “Great to see her practicing her writing skills”. Visit the nursery’s Open Day on Saturday 24 September to see the Tapestry Learning Journal in action. Call 01273 441912 or visit www.sunshine-nursery.com To advertise call: 01273 452065

Inspired by the Olympics? This month, inspired by the Olympic Games Louis Jones shares tips to avoid injuries this summer. Wow, what an amazing Olympics Games it has been with so many fantastic performances by our British athletes. Personally, I have been inspired by each and everyone’s great performances and the story behind each athlete’s success. With more success and medal winning, comes greater exposure and funding. As a result, there will most likely be a huge increase in people taking to the streets, running, pounding the pavements, or cycling, joining sports clubs, or going to the gym or the local swimming pool.

This month I would like to share some helpful tips, when starting sport or perhaps increasing your activity level, so that you can avoid getting injured this summer. 1. Consult a doctor or specialist. If you are new to sport, it is a good idea before entering your first 10K road race, or half marathon, that you have a general health MOT. 2. Seek professional advice regarding footwear or clothing. When taking up sport, it is best to get proper advice on which footwear is best for you, which clothing is most suitable and if buying a bike, which frame correctly suits your body, which saddle is most comfortable etc. Although the internet is a great place to find the latest deals, don’t get tempted to try and save a few pounds on equipment, without seeking advice and trying it out first. This will save you time, money and frustration if you are unfortunate enough to pick up an injury. 3. When taking part in an activity, make sure you warm up and stretch properly, so you can reduce your risk of muscle strains. It is important to allow time to warm up, stretch and cool down. 4. Drink plenty of fluid, including water. It is very important to stay hydrated, especially with the amount of humid weather we have been experiencing recently. Maintaining a good level of hydration will mean that you won’t fatigue as quickly and you will again reduce your risk of injury. 5. Invest in sports massage. Sports massage is fantastic for assisting muscle recovery after sports, helping muscles perform better when you exercise, by improving bloody flow and function, and reducing your risk of injury, by eliminating scar tissue and muscle adhesions through heavy stresses and strains. 6. Take up Yoga or Pilates. Both forms of exercise teach important concepts about strength and balance, and focus on improving your core muscle strength and flexibility. Doing this form of exercise will improve your posture, technique and performance and greatly reduce your risk of injury. Remember to be sensible and plan properly when taking part in sports, so you can enjoy it to the max. Have a Night Out In. The BIG get together with Hospice Care Week, 3rd-9th October. Raise money for local hospices include St Barnabas House

T

HEY HELP THOUSANDS of patients every year — now St Barnabas House and other local hospices are calling on the public to help them. The Big Get Together is a new initiative that invites people to join together with friends or family, have some fun and raise funds to support vital hospice services. Hospices are encouraging the public and businesses throughout the South East to run their own events during October. It could be a family barbeque; a cocktails-and-canapes evening; watching a film and eating pizza in your pyjamas or a good old-fashioned natter over tea and cake — make it as sophisticated or as silly as you like. Twelve hospices in Surrey, Kent, Sussex and Berkshire have teamed up to invite people to be a part of the first Big Get Together this October by holding a night in — and asking guests to make a donation. Whether you raise £10 or £1,000, every penny will be used to provide essential hospice care and support in local communities in the South East. Hospices help people with advanced progressive life-limiting illnesses experience the best quality of life in the time that remains to them: care is offered free of charge and for as long as it’s required — whether that’s a couple of days or many months. Hospices also support the patient’s family, providing practical, spiritual and emotional support during their loved one’s illness

16

and after their death. Hospices typically cost millions of pounds to run every year yet most only receive a small portion of government funding so public support is essential to keep them running. Funds raised through The Big Get Together will make a huge difference to local hospices such as St Barnabas House — from paying for a hospice community nurse to visit a patient in their own home to a stay of a few days at a hospice for respite care or symptom management. All funds raised will go directly to the hospice chosen by participants. Those who sign up to hold a Big Get Together can expect lots of support too; register your interest and you’ll receive a pack full of ideas, a Big Get Together money box for donations from your guests and templates for invitations, posters and bunting. There’s a dedicated website (www.TheBigGetTogether.org.uk) where you’ll find ideas and inspiration to help organise your perfect Big Get Together. It’s up to participants when they hold their Big Get Together, which coincide with Hospice Care week and World Hospice Dat on 8th October. They can join thousands of others and hold their gathering in October or, if the event is to commemorate a loved one, they can choose a date that is memorable for them. Those interested in taking part can register on the dedicated website: www.TheBigGetTogether.org.uk where they will also find ideas, inspiration and news. To advertise call: 01273 452065
