THE REAL LIFE OF BRIAN This delightful story of a lad growing up will ring a bell with many readers. Told how it was in days gone by, before the advent of health & safety and human rights. Born in Godstone, Surrey, in 1941, Brian grew up in Portslade, and brought up by his father after his mother died when he was three. Brian and his three brothers had a tough life ahead of them. He recalls all of the escapades with his pals and the many trips to local hospitals, to repair the injuries caused by his mishaps. A very touching story, lovingly told and sad in places, but despite the author’s many disabilities gathered over the years, he refused to give up or blame anyone else. This is a story about an ordinary man who has had an extraordinary life. You will certainly have shed a tear or two by the time you reach the last page. You can purchase your own copy of this delightful story from Brian Winstanley (Author) by contacting him on 01273 453957. Cost £9.99 4

GOD OF CARNAGE Wick Theatre Company’s next production will be God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza. Dates are Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 June, 7.45pm at the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick. A playground dispute between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of middle class parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters. The Wick Theatre Company are proud to present Yasmina Reza’s award-winning play. Originally performed in its native French, the play has been successfully translated into English by Christopher Hamilton and has been equally acclaimed in London and on Broadway. Tickets cost £11 from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk

SHOREHAM WORDFEST 2017 The exciting new programme for Shoreham Wordfest was launched at Saturday’s Artisan Market in Shoreham’s busy East Street. The Wordfest team handed out the brochures, which were received with enthusiasm by people of all ages. “There is something for everyone in our autumn festival,” said organiser Rosalind Turner. “We start with the charismatic broadcaster and vicar of Firle, Peter Owen-Jones talking about his love of the South Downs on September 28th, and finish with Southwick’s own performance poet Attila the Stockbroker, appearing with Murray Lachlan Young on Thursday October 19.” In between there are plays, authors, and a three-week photographic exhibition, talks and a play about Lee Miller, world renowned photojournalist and muse of the surrealist movement with her husband Roland Penrose. The programme features a special Wordfest tour of their home, Farley Farm in Chiddingly. “This year’s theme is Modernism,” said fellow organiser David Johnson, “focusing on the twentieth century artistic and literary movement in Sussex, featuring Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, for example. But we are also exploring books and ideas now, with creative writing sessions and a debate with Guardian journalist Rafael Behr, on the idea of fake news and how to be an active citizen at a time of confusion.” There are plenty of opportunities for fun as well, with a spoof play, TEEN People, written by Worthing playwright Simon Messingham with Mark Gatiss, screen writer for many Dr Who episodes. Also the first Shoreham Wordfest Cabaret, hosted by author and magician Tom Cutler, which promises “an evening of subversive thrills!” Meanwhile junior helper, Casey Chalk, aged 7, is looking forward to the story telling session and the Michael Morpugo play, “Why the Whales Came”. For full details of the Shoreham Wordfest programme please visit: www. shorehamwordfest.com. Brochures will be available in all libraries and many local outlets. Tickets are available via the website or www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk. You can also buy directly from Ropetackle Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Investments – what are the risks?

D

ESPITE THE INTEREST rates being currently low, many people are still investing in building society or bank accounts. At times of change and stock market fluctuation cash investments provide security. It is considered a safe home for many people’s money, and a sensible place to keep funds you may need in the short term. It is well known that many other types of investment come with risk which can be offputting to some people. There are many types of risk which often people get confused, here I will explain three of the main types. At times of low interest rates the interest received on your cash investments may be lower than the rate of inflation. This means that the real value of your capital could reduce over time. The term for this is inflation risk. At the other end of the scale, people could buy shares in a specific company. This can be a much higher risk as you are relying on one specific company’s performance — this is called specific risk. You may invest in a number of different assets, such as investing in a portfolio arranged by a financial adviser. Typically this would spread your investment across a number of different assets according to your level of risk. This could include company shares, property, fixed interest or gilts and cash. By diversifying across a broad range of assets the overall risk level is potentially reduced. This type of investment, however, will be affected by the movements in the overall market — this is called systemic risk. To explain this further if you invest in a broad, well diversified portfolio the value of your investment will vary as the market fluctuates. However, as you are invested in a range of assets your money is more widely spread. This means that if one area reduces in value often a different area will react differently to the market conditions. The different areas of investment have different risk levels, for example the shares in your portfolio will be deemed higher risk, however, the fixed interest or gilts will have a lower risk level. The investment would be set at a risk level you feel comfortable with. Investments of this type should be for funds you do not need to access in the short term. This gives the investment time to ride through market fluctuations.

You should always leave sufficient capital in cash for your shorter term needs. If you would like advice on any of the above issues, or need independent financial advice please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist.

The changing fortunes of New Shoreham

A

FTER THE NORMAN Conquest, William de Braose was granted a new division of land in 1073, and a new village that would become Bramber grew up around his castle. This Norman settlement was in part designed to steal the trade of the upstream town of Steyning, which was at that time a manor owned by the monks of Fecamp. A causeway was constructed across the Adur to prevent ships from reaching Steyning, and houses and a market place built on the reclaimed land. Philip de Braose, son of William, felt these measures were inadequate as Steyning was still thriving, so he established a new settlement at the mouth of the Adur that in 1096 became known as New Shoreham. With its neatly planned streets leading to the High Street it became an important gateway to the continent, although the Eastern part of the High Street and the part of the town behind it was destroyed by coastal erosion in the late Middle Ages. New Shoreham’s impressive St. Mary de Haura church, in its original form, dates from 1130, and was built to serve a growing population. Skilled stone masons who also worked on Canterbury cathedral were involved in its construction and as well as locally quarried flints, Caen stones were brought over from France as part of its construction. By the 13th century New Shoreham was flourishing as a major port. At this point the impressive vaulted choir of the St Mary’s south arcade was added to the building. The fortunes of St. Mary’s church reflected those of the town and it had become decayed by the fifteenth century, with its original nave crumbling into disrepair. Most of the stone from the original nave was re-used, to create a new temporary west wall of the church, sometime in the 1600s. Like other channel ports at this time Shoreham was suffering from silting up, coastal erosion and the effects of war. In 1563 a survey showed that St. Mary’s church at this time had no priest. The English Channel was in part responsible for the town’s change in fortunes. Sea floods between 1375 and 1425 did enormous damage to the town while the river was diverted east by a sand and shingle bar, making it less navigable. The sea reclaimed a large area of the town itself, and today only a few short stubs of New Shoreham’s southeastern streets remain. The only stone-built town building apart from the church to

survive the period of flooding was the Marlipins in the High Street. When following the port’s decline, it was no longer used as a customs house; it became for a time a private dwelling. The port during this period was important for sending corn to London, though the part of its journey undertaken by road was, in the 1600s, slow and arduous. Local rural parishes were enclosing their land, in order to grow more crops, including Southwick landowners the Lewkenors who in 1584 were preparing to begin enclosure. In the 1670s however New Shoreham ceased to be a market town in its own right. Shoreham’s port meant that heavy building materials could be brought into the town. In Tudor and Stuart times most houses in Shoreham were built of wood, usually oak. There were also some half-timbered houses that had a stone or brick base, but these were the preserve of the wealthy. In New Shoreham flint was also used in house building as it was locally available from quarrying the chalk downland. Wattle and daub was often used to fill in between the timbers of the wooden buildings. Most roofs in Shoreham would have been made of straw or thatch, though stones roofed the grandest of buildings. These were usually Horsham stone, found in sandy outcrops in the weald. Only three or four of the medieval town houses, built here in prosperous times survived the great storm of 1703. In the 1840s Shoreham was the most important port in Sussex, with 36 percent of commercial tonnage passing through its harbour. In 1818 the shingle bar had been split to form the harbour. Industry boomed with the opening of the Aldrington canal and the arrival of the railway connecting the town to Brighton. Coal was transported from Shoreham to Brighton until the larger town began instead receiving overland supplies from South London. Coal imports recovered in the 1870s with the building of Portslade Gasworks and a chemical factory at the harbour. Passengers arrived at Shoreham by train and then embarked on the regular steamer service from Kingston to Dieppe, though this service sadly shifted to Newhaven in 1847. In 1901 New Shoreham was an important town for trade, industry and leisure, and it features in many works of art and literature of the time. It’s neighbours Southwick and Kingston had also both doubled in size. Judy Upton

The autumnal turn

W

ELL HERE WE are in September! The summer seems to have shot by and nose-dived rather dramatically over the last month. Probably something to do with school holidays! Still there is always the promise of a revival during the month, even if we are getting shorter evenings. It is noticeable that summer is definitely starting to wind down and clearing the decks ready for Autumn.

On the subject of holidays, it’s at this time of year that many of us have been away for a glorious few weeks, only to return home to see the garden looking like a jungle, with weeds the size of triffids and all the plants that looked in such good condition looking distraught, despite the best efforts of the neighbour or the in laws, who were certain that they watered the garden regularly, when really they did it on the day before you come back because they kept thinking it would rain overnight so there’s was no need to pop around and do it. It can be very disconcerting, so it’s best to get stuck in and deal with things in order, to get back on top of it. If the plants are struggling then give them a good drink and pop some liquid feed in to give them a boost and help perk them up. I always go for the weeds next. It’s amazing how large they do grow and getting them gone before they go to seed is vital, to stop them reappearing. Just taking the weeds out makes an enormous difference to the look of the garden. Next on the list is dead heading the flowers and getting rid of anything that has died. Most flowering plants will bounce back very well from deadheading and give an even better display After all that’s dealt with, give lawn a cut and edge it. It makes an instant impact and it also cuts down on the weeds in the lawn. Again, whilst you are at it, give the lawn a liquid feed. It will have taken a battering over the summer so a boost will really help perk it up and get it looking better. Do make sure you read the instructions on any lawn feed very carefully and follow them, and if it says water the lawn after applying, don’t be like the in laws and hope it will rain, do it! I get to see quite a few lawns where they have been burnt by the nitrogen in the feed, because it wasn’t watered in as per the instructions and once it’s done, it’s not going to grow back! That should pretty much have got things back on track in the garden and hopefully you won’t be resigning yourself to never going on holiday again because of the garden. It sounds daft but I have heard that muttered on more than one occasion. As wonderful as a garden is, they will pretty much look after themselves with some interference from us. They are there to be enjoyed and not to become a burden. So please before you rush out and sort the garden out, at least unpack your suitcases and give the neighbour or the in-laws their stuffed Spanish donkey as a thankyou present for looking after the garden in your absence! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

One small mistake and it may be invalid. That’s why it is always best to have your Will written up by an experienced solicitor. The St Barnabas Will Writing Appeal enables you to do this, while at the same time supporting your local hospice. Bookings need to be made directly with your chosen solicitor during October 2017. Bounce back quickly from Shin Splints This month, following on from the theme of running and the World Championships, Louis Jones takes a look at the common injury Shin Splints.

What are Shin Splints?

Medial tibial stress syndrome, better known as shin splints, is a painful condition to the inside of your shins, made worse by high impact activities such as walking with heavy back packs, running or dancing. There are 2 distinct types, which affect specific tissues of the shin: 1. Type One: Due to a stress reaction to the inside border of the shin bone.

2. Type Two: Due to an irritation of the outer surface of the bone, called the periostium, where the calf muscles attach and pull.

What causes it?

There are various reasons why this condition can occur, mostly being linked to overuse. Sportspeople regularly doing high impact on hard surfaces are affected most. Lack of cushion in shoes or trainers can contribute. Also poor body mechanics can affect how you strike the ground during sport, and therefore the lower back, hips and knees can all contribute of the surrounding muscles are not strong.

How can we treat Shin Splints? Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

1. With most injuries the RICE method in the acute stages can be very beneficial. R = Rest the area I = Ice the area to reduce swelling and inflammation C = Compress the area to help support the injury and help improve circulation E = Elevate the area to help reduce swelling 2. After this initial period if you are still suffering with pain or discomfort, which worsens with activity, then you should consult and physiotherapist. 3. Anti-inflammatory gels can be good for massaging into the painful area. 4. When you consult a physiotherapist, they will be able to advise you on correcting poor biomechanics, and exercises to help strengthen weak areas of the body. 5. Orthotics (insoles) can be helpful to help with poor mechanics. 6. Refraining from high impact exercise and doing low impact activity such as cycling or swimming can be a great way to maintain fitness until your condition has settled. If you have any queries about any of the information in this article or think that physiotherapy could help you, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01273467614 or email me at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. SEASIDE HOSPITAL RADIO

T

HERE AREN’T MANY of us who haven’t heard of a friend, relative, family member or work colleague who has had to visit Southlands Hospital as an outpatient or go into Worthing Hospital. The whole process can be a bit daunting and filled with apprehension, even when we all know that the doctors and nurses will do their utmost to give us the best care. However, there is another group of dedicated individuals who want to ensure your visit to hospital is the best experience possible and they come in the form of the volunteers of Seaside Hospital Radio. This group of unsung heroes put together a wide variety of programmes that are broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the patients, staff and visitors at Worthing and Southlands Hospitals. Seaside volunteer Gillian Fischer told us why she joined the hospital radio station and about the good work it does “Seaside Hospital Radio is great place to learn about presenting radio. The station is always open to new ideas and all types of creativity and that is shown in the variety of the shows it broadcasts. Presenters endeavour to produce interesting shows and convey a friendly and reassuring voice to the patients during their stay in hospital”. Patients can access Seaside Hospital Radio FREE via the hospitals Hospicom bedside system. When they leave hospital 16

they can continue to listen at home via the internet on a smartphone, tablet, computer, or smart TV by logging onto the Seaside Hospital Radio website www.seasidehr.com and click on the ‘Listen Live’ icon on the home page. Seaside Hospital Radio has a long and varied history which started way back in the early 1970’s as Southlands Hospital Broadcasting Service and it is in Southlands Hospital that it has its studios today. Over 40 volunteers give their own time to put together shows which include a non-stop mixture of 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s hits, love songs and relaxing classic music through the night. The more specialist shows include classical, 50s music, disco and party classics, jazz, country and easy listening, as well as shows dedicated to groups and artists such as the Beatles, Elvis and Queen. So there really is something for everyone including national and international news on the hour, every hour. Not only do the volunteers put together the shows but they also give their time to raise funds; as a charity, Seaside Hospital Radio does not receive a regular income and without sponsorship, donations and fund raising it would not be able to continue its good work. Chairman of Seaside Hospital Radio Laszlo Zselyi explains why; “We have ever increasing costs for routine studio maintenance, utility bills and broadcasting licences. He went on to say “We recognise the generosity of

Kate Armes & Gillian Fisher

the public and the work each member contributes to fundraising for the station and as a result of all the hard work we have managed to entertain the patients and all those involved with Worthing and Southland’s Hospital Trust (WSHT) for nearly 45 years.” As Seaside Hospital Radio serves the patients, staff and visitors of Worthing and Southlands Hospitals the presenters like to interact with all their listeners and they love to read out messages and dedications. This can be done by contacting them through the seasidehr. com website contact page or via Facebook.com/seasidehr and Twitter @seasidehr or simply email requests@seasidehr.com

Both Caroline and Sarah were treated at The Royal Marsden Hospital. Caroline sadly passed away in 2015 with Sarah losing her fight in 2016.

Proceeds from the sale of each bear have been donated to support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity who raise money solely to support The Royal Marsden. They ensure their nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments, which are used across the UK and around the world. From funding state-of-the-art equipment and groundbreaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, they will never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. A competition to ‘Name the Bear’ was held at the Oak Centre for Children & Young People at The Royal Marsden in Sutton. The children all suggested names, which were put into a hat, and one of the children pulled out David, so Dave the Bear was born. Merrythought has handmade traditional teddy bears in the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, Shropshire, UK since 1930. Merrythought is a family business famous for crafting the finest, jointed, mohair teddy bears adored by children and adults across the world. Every one of their bears is lovingly made by hand in their factory in the heart of England. This is a bespoke Merrythought bear, which has been manufactured in a strictly limited edition of 250 and comes with its own presentation box and certificate of authenticity.

The bears are available to buy from the website

Fostering Facts - 6 things you might not know about fostering

Y

OU DON’T NEED to be a super human to foster with us. Check out the facts below and get in touch if you think you’re able to provide a safe, stable and loving home for a vulnerable local child. 1. There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ foster carer: You can be single, in a relationship, married, gay or straight, a home owner or renting. All you need is a spare room, time to give and a big heart. 2. You can offer a home for long term, short term, emergency or respite care: If you’re a short term carer, you might only have a child for a few nights every month but you’d still be making a massive difference to a child’s life, offering them a loving short term home whilst they transition to a longer term placement. 3. It takes about six months to become a foster carer with us: During this time you’ll go through an extensive assessment process and receive lots of training and support to make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your new role. Once you are approved as a carer, you’ll have your own supervising social worker who you’ll be in regular contact with and our out of hours service means you’ll never be on your own. 4. You’ll receive a generous financial package: For each child you foster, you’ll be paid an allowance meaning you can transform a child’s life and get paid for doing something extremely rewarding.

5. We can help you work towards an NVQ in Fostering and you’ll receive ongoing training: This means that you constantly grow and develop in your new role, providing your foster child with the best care and support possible and at the same time creating a fulfilling and long term career for yourself. 6. You’ll be part of a supportive carer community: You’ll be able to meet other carers for support, advice and friendship at our carer coffee mornings, support groups and events throughout the year, creating invaluable bonds and friendships. We hold regular fostering information sessions and we’d love for you to join us. The dates are: 6.30pm, Tuesday 12th September, Shoreham Centre; 6.30pm, Wednesday 18th October and Tuesday 14th November, both dates at Hove Cricket Ground. Visit our website: www.fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk for more information or call us on 01273 295444

Shoreham (in blue) v Witham Town

Shoreham Football Club promoted S HOREHAM FOOTBALL CLUB (nick named the Musselmen) made history this year with promotion to the Isthmian League for the first time in their 125 year history. The club was presented the 80 year old trophy last month with huge celebrations. What does this mean for the town? Well, Shoreham-by-Sea now have their own semi-professional football club. With FA Cup and FA Trophy matches coming to Shoreham with potentially playing professional opposition. The club has already had to play Brighton & Hove Albion in the Sussex Community Shield which was a huge test for Shoreham. The 2000 capacity stadium at Middle Road has seen a huge facelift and is now practically unrecognisable. The club’s new league for this coming season is The Bostik South (formerly known as the Ryman). This league is a huge step up for the county league of last season and the club is excited about being in this league and being able to bring teams on a weekly basis to Middle Road like Guernsey, Lewes, Hastings, Herne Bay, Ramsgate to name a few. The club has over 16 youth teams for boys and girls and with the club now at the level, they are hoping to showcase their young talent to the footballing world and bring through youth to the 20

senior team and beyond. The club plays its senior games on Tuesday nights 7.45pm kick off (under floodlights) and Saturdays 3pm kick off. The club boast three stands; one standing for around 120 people, and two with 170 seats, as well as free standing around the pitch perimeter barrier. There is a nice club house with bar and cafe with entertainment. The club is on regularly on TV and live radio commentary. The away Guernsey game will be streamed live back to Shorehams club house for supporters that can’t get to that game. Which again is a club and town first. The club offers season tickets or pay on the gate entry with one of the cheapest gate charges in the league. You can get a

further 50% discount if you join as a club member. It’s a family orientated club so there’s plenty of families that come down to watch, as we offer a free match day mascot, there’s plenty of opportunity for kids up to the age of 12 to lead the team out. As the town’s only true football clubm they would love to see some new faces this seasons and, with your support, hope to climb higher up the football league ladder. All of the club details can be found on our website www.shorehamfc. co.uk, Twitter: @shorehamfc, Facebook shorehamfc, and Instagram shorehamfc or telephone them on 01273 454261.

Coffee worth the wait!

T

HE LONG AWAITED opening of the Co-op Community Space (CCS), formerly the Java Junction Cafe in Shoreham by Sea, is due to open its doors on Saturday 2nd September. Having been vacant for three years, the shop is now going to be open and run for community events, such as craft workshops, meetings, coffee mornings, cake sales, book sales, toddler groups and much more! Adur East Lions are proud to be partnering with the CCS and shall be running coffee mornings fortnightly, beginning on Saturday 2nd September with the Grand Re-opening. If you shop at Co-op in Ham Road, you’ll have noticed Java Junction over the last couple of years, empty, bar the odd circus fly poster! Much work was needed to bring the shop up-to-date, including rewiring, redecorating, and the obligatory legal certifications. Two students on a ten day visit with Adur East Lions also assisted in cleaning the shop as part of their Service requirements (as seen in the attached photo), together with members of Adur East Lions and the CCS. As the CCS has limited funds to kit out the shop, Adur East Lions will be loaning them tables and chairs and this will enable them to start organising events, such as the Grand Opening Coffee Morning.

Adur East Lions Club President Claudine said she was very excited to be part of the venture from the start. “It’s a great opportunity to connect with the community and we hope they’ll come and visit us”. Members of the Club will be serving tea and coffee, together with a scrumptious selection of home made cakes. Whether you’re interested in finding out more about your local Lions Club, or just in need of a cuppa after your weekly shop, make sure you stop by and pop into the Co-op Community Space on Saturday 2nd September, you’re sure for a warm welcome! Adur East Lions meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the MS Centre in Southwick at 7.30pm. For meeting or membership enquiries, please email Colin Burt at colin.burt2@ntlworld.com

Bright & Beautiful Velda Fairclough lives in Hove and runs the local franchise for Bright & Beautiful, a domestic housekeeping service based in the Old Shoreham Road that covers Hove, Shoreham and Southwick.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in Hove for 12 years now and can’t imagine living anywhere else! Myself and my now husband Jonathan decided to leave London because we wanted to get married and start a family and we now have a gorgeous little boy and girl who love it here as much as we do. What do you most like about the area? Living by the sea is fantastic, and we are very lucky that there is never a shortage of interesting things going on, whether it be the arts or sports. We have a huge number of high quality restaurants, cafes and bars so you are never short of a good night out. One of the main reasons I started my own housekeeping business was so that I could play an even bigger role in and become much closer to the community that I love so much being a part of.

What services do Bright & Beautiful provide? What Bright & Beautiful brings is a housekeeping service that offers something very different. We deliver professional domestic housekeeping services that include cleaning, tidying, laundry and ironing and we do so with the highest standards of security and service. We are also committed to using only eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaning products that are better for your home and your health and leave the rooms looking and smelling wonderful. Our housekeepers work in teams of three so they get the job quickly and efficiently and I run regular training sessions with them so that they will always leave a home looking sparkling, with all the finishing touches that we pride ourselves on — from hotel standard bed making and gleaming antiques to an immaculate laundry service. We even put your ironed clothes away in your wardrobe for you!

Velda Fairclough of Bright & Beautiful

How can people find out more about your domestic housekeeping services? The best way for people to find out more about our services is to visit our website. www.brightandbeautifulhome.com/ hove/ and there is lots of information on there about our services, client testimonials, security policies and our ethical approach. Or they can call me on 01273 934991 or email me on velda@brightandbeautifulhome.com for a free and no obligation quote to look after their home.

Climbing Kilimanjaro for Sussex MS Centre

L

INDA PENBERTHY WILL be setting out on a to raise some much needed funds for the Sussex MS Centre in Southwick and your support would be very welcome! Linda Penberthy, who is from Shoreham, will be raising vital funds for this charity when she starts on her epic journey on the 22nd of September 2017 to walk to the very top of highest trekkable mountain in Africa — Kilimanjaro. The total height of this dormant volcano measures 5895 metres. There are 6 routes to the top which can take 4.5 days to ascend. Her journey will take her through rain forests, heath and moorlands, a high desert at 4700 meters and finally at the summit 5895 metres where the temperature never rises above -5ºC in the day. Linda will be taking this journey with fellow trekkers and of course with the help of local and assistant guide. She has elected to take the Rongai route up which takes six days and will allow her greater success due to having one day for acclimatisation. On the final ascent the climb will commence at midnight in order to summit at sunrise. It will be a 13 hour day. The money that is raised will contribute to the funds required for this very worthy, local charity which gives five days a week support to people suffering with MS. The centre, largely resourced by volunteers, is self-funded and relies on donations, bequests and grants to carry on their essential work. It serves people from both East and West Sussex, spanning Eastbourne to Chichester and welcomes over 200 people to its facilities each week. The Centre is able to offer a variety of subsidised

treatments and therapies including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, massage, Pilates, yoga, exercise classes and social support to aid the management of MS symptoms. If you would like to sponsor Linda visit the website: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LindaPenberthy
