Community grants distributed by Adur County Local Committee

T

hree community projects have been backed by the Adur County Local Committee. The committee agreed to distribute a total of £8,054 from its Community Initiative Fund to the following projects: • £3,500 towards the refurbishment of new kitchens for Adur Voluntary Action in Lancing. The charitable company provides meals for elderly people. • £2,400 towards mentoring and technical support to manage the Fishersgate Online and Resource Centre Club at Fishersgate Community Centre. The centre is used by vulnerable adults and children. • £2,154 towards purchasing new audio equipment for Shoreham’s Original All-Stars Music CIC, an organisation which encourages young people aged between seven and 20 years old to perform music live. Angie Mills, Chairman of the Adur County Local Committee, said: “We felt each of these three causes were worthy of financial support. “Our Community Initiative Fund has helped many local groups and organisations over the past few years. “I would encourage organisations to have a look and consider applying for a grant if they’ve got a project coming up which would benefit the community.”

There’s a worm at the bottom of the garden! Jess Price, Wildlife Information Officer at Sussex Wildlife Trust has received an influx of phone calls from worried residents of Sussex who have spotted a snake in their garden. She said, ‘There is © Darin Smith Sussex Wildlife Trust just something about snakes that seems to concern people. More likely, I think it’s simply a lack of understanding of our native wildlife and the risk that it poses to us. Here are my six snake survival tips.’ What kind of snake is it? There are three species of snake native to the UK, but we only get two of them in Sussex: the grass snake and the adder. Grass snakes are large, up to 150 cm and have a black and cream/yellow collar just behind their head and a series of ‘dots and dashes’ running down each side of their body. Adders are smaller, around 60 to 80 cm and have a ‘V’ or an ‘X’ on their head with a thick black zigzag running down the top of their back. How common are snakes in gardens? Grass snakes are more likely to visit, however it does depend on where you live. In urban areas neither snake is common, but in semi-rural locations or in gardens that back onto wild areas the chances are higher. Adders do not regularly visit gardens, but if you live for example in the middle of the Ashdown Forest or close to the heathland areas around Midhurst then an adder may be slightly more of a possibility. Why do snakes come into gardens? Grass snakes most often come into gardens looking for food. They mainly feed on amphibians and small fish so garden ponds can be an attractive hunting ground. They can also be attracted to compost heaps where they sometimes lay their eggs. Adders do not like to be disturbed, so will avoid areas with people. But they will occasionally pass through gardens on route to somewhere else. Should I be scared the snake will bite me? Grass snakes are non-venomous and completely harmless, but adders can give a nasty bite. This is not something to be overly worried about as both snakes dislike being disturbed. If they sense that something big is coming they will simply slither away undercover. Adders do not want to waste their venom biting something they can’t eat so will only use it to defend themselves as a last resort. What happens if I get bitten? According to the NHS Adder bites can be painful but they are rarely serious. In most cases the only treatment required is observation in hospital. As a precaution, you may be asked to stay in hospital for 24 hours to be monitored. Anti-venom medication is an effective antidote to snake venom and can be used to treat more severe snake bites.’ If you are unlucky enough to get bitten it’s a good idea to go to your nearest Accident and Emergency and get checked over. Jess Price is always interested to hear about snake sightings as our native species are declining due to illegal persecution and loss of suitable habitats. Please report your sightings via our website www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk or ring her on the WildCall hotline 01273 494777.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Invest in your future – make a financial review O

ur modern lifestyle is so busy, it is hard to find time to get the essentials done, never mind dealing with anything in the background. Most people tend to deal with what is urgent and the rest gets left by the wayside. There always seems to be a shortage of time. Most of us dream that at some point in our lives we will be able to slow down. We hope to be financially secure enough to work less hours, or to give up work altogether. When we are younger we see this as being a long way off, but fast forward to your 40s and it all seems a lot more imminent. We all dream of freedom and time, but do we look after our finances to achieve this? This summer has been more distracting than ever. Not only the usual trips and holidays with children off, but the Diamond Jubilee followed by the Olympics & Paralympics. Let’s be honest, the weather wasn’t fantastic, but we’ve had a wonderful time. Now we are getting back to normal, many have started looking at neglected finances. It always seems busy this time of year as

Many don’t have a proper relationship with an independent adviser and don’t know who to call to get clarification. people take stock and try to get back on track. This can mean paying off credit cards, or looking at your mortgage. Taking it one step further, is it time for a proper review of all your finances? If you are looking for an easier future, it’s important to make sure you are on the right track. A full review may seem daunting, most people have gathered several financial products over time but forget the details as time goes on. Many don’t have a proper relationship with an independent adviser and don’t know who to call to get clarification. It’s not surprising a lot of this gets tucked away in the drawer not to be looked at again. We can call this financial inertia! So much money is wasted each year on products which are not the best for people. People pay for cover they no longer need, or pay into pensions and investments which are not performing well. The financial world has moved on greatly over the last few years. We now have systems where we can manage people’s investments on an ongoing basis, monitoring performance and accessing the country’s top fund managers. Previously, these arrangements were only available to large investors, now we can access them for smaller sums. Your pension or ISA may not be 6

huge, but it should be looked after properly! If you are interested in a review, here at Talk Money we can deal with everything, from your mortgage to your ISAs to your pension arrangements. All of this under one roof. We have interactive client systems which allow you check your values whenever you wish, and direct online links to many of the life companies. Just one meeting with us and we will gather all of the information together, put it in order and advise you going forward. If you would like a full review of your finances, or advice on something individual, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. Southwick and Fishersgate Horticultural Autumn Show T

he Annual Summer Flower Show of the Southwick and Fishersgate Horticultural Society was held at Southwick Community Centre, on Saturday 18th August 2012 Over 40 exhibitors entered about three hundred and sixty items in this year’s show. This is an excellent turnout when you consider the recent spell of unseasonal weather we have experienced in our gardens! The Barn Hall was full of bright dahlias, gladioli, rose buds and fuchsias. Impressive flowering annuals, perennials and some beautiful pot plants were on display in the Garden Room. The Master Gardener competition for the Matt Scott Shield yielded an amazing array of vegetables, including some giant onions. The standard of the floral arrangements was superb with some displays themed around the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The cakes & preserves were mouth-watering as usual, with some particularly good carrot cakes. Visitors to the show were able to enjoy a cup

8

of tea and homemade delights in the café area. The afternoon’s live music was provided by a local Quintet who played a variety of popular tunes to entertain everyone on the Community Centre lawns. Local charities and community groups turned out with stalls and the excellent weather brought a high number of visitors who dug deep in their pockets to help the charities raise over £250 for their causes. Kathy Ruell from the Southwick and Shoreham Country Market was delighted, “We have had a lovely afternoon, enjoying the band and good company. Our produce has gone down very well”. The winner of the member’s competition for the Best Container or Hanging Basket in a front garden was Robina Casemore, with Christine Stiff’s beautiful display taking second place and Angie Hamiltion’s attractive arrangement coming a close third. There were some delightful handmade crowns in the children’s categories and congratulations go to Chantelle Winder, first time winner of

the Ridley Junior cup – the attention to detail in her garden in a shoe box was outstanding. Visitors enjoyed a wonderful display of photographs, drawings, paintings and collage in the competition for schools. Glebe Primary School scooped an overall first and third prize, while Church Lane Nursery took an overall second. Their prizes include vouchers for Suttons Seeds, gardening tools and pots. Chair of the Horticultural Society, Julie MacCulloch praised the children’s efforts and likened one collage to a Clarice Cliff design, “These children are so talented, it is a real pleasure to see their fabulous art work and all the hard work they have put in to their gardens at school. We will continue to support their horticultural interest in any way we can” The Southwick and Fishersgate Horticultural Society Autumn Show is on Saturday 27th October 2012. If you would like more details about it, or would like to find out how to enter, please visit: www.sfhorticulturalsociety. org.uk or call Julie on 01273 596707. The Southwick and Shoreham Country Market takes place every Friday in the Porter Room at Southwick Community Centre from 9-11, with fruit, vegetables, plants and preserves on sale from many of the Society’s prize winning producers. Beauchamp’s Career

W

ith Shoreham Wordfest celebrating local writing in October, it is timely to consider a second famous author who featured Shoreham prominently in one of his novels, George Meredith. Where George Moore, in his book ‘Esther Waters’, set his plot around Buckingham House, the Red Lion Inn and the Swiss Gardens, Meredith focused on politics in the town. Published in 1876, ‘Beauchamp’s Career’ is concerned with the state of Britain. Its hero is Nevil Beauchamp who begins his career as an idealistic young naval officer. Nevil soon earns the approval of his aristocratic uncle Everard Romfrey who lives in a mansion at Steynham (a barely concealed Steyning). After the Crimean War, Nevil Beauchamp becomes involved in politics, and stands as a Radical in the Tory borough of Bevisham, in reality Shoreham, thus offending his traditionalist uncle. Nevil becomes friends with Doctor Shrapnel, a humanist and republican who lives in Bevisham. After a quarrel, Romfrey horsewhips Shrapnel. Nevil becomes obsessed with getting his uncle to apologise, while his indecision over his feelings for two women loses him them both. Nevil falls seriously ill, which finally brings about Romfrey’s apology to Shrapnel, who is looking after Romfrey’s sick nephew. Nevil finally recovers and marries Shrapnel’s ward Jenny Denham, but soon after drowns trying to rescue a child from the sea. ‘Bevisham’, as Shoreham is called in the novel, is mentioned as a Sussex port on the river Otley (the Adur). Meredith paints a picturesque portrait of the town in the 1870s when he describes Nevil’s journey to Mount Laurels, the grand house of Colonel Halkett: ‘He was dropped by the Esperanza’s boat near Otley ferry, to walk along the beach to Bevisham, and he kept eye on the elegant vessel as she glided swan-like to her moorings off Mount Laurels park through dusky merchant craft, colliers, and trawlers, loosely shaking her towering snow-white sails, unchallenged in her scornful supremacy; an image of a refinement of beauty, and of a beautiful servicelessness.’ At another point, while out riding on the Downs, Nevil remarks that ‘Bevisham looks well from here. We might make a North-western Venice of it, if we liked.’ Nevil’s uncle Everard and his friends live an opulent lifestyle, but Nevil worries about the poverty and hardship also evident around them. He mentions agricultural workers who are ‘sickly little

10

beings, consumptive or bandy-legged, within a radius of five miles of Steynham.’ Of Shoreham (Bevisham) the author notes: ‘ Undoubtedly the town was of an ignoble aspect; and it was declining in prosperity; and it was consequently over-populated. And undoubtedly a Government, acting to any extent like a supervising head, should aid and direct the energies of towns and ports and trades, and not leave everything everywhere to chance: schools for the people, public morality, should be the charge of Government.’ Nevil’s humanitarian sympathies are not popular with Bevisham’s privileged elite however, and the idealistic young man is unsuccessful in his bid to be a Parliamentary candidate for the town. It is interesting that the novel reflects similar views on the decline of Shoreham to George Moore’s ‘Esther Waters’, published in 1894, where a railway porter explains that ‘Shoreham, you see, isn’t what it was in days gone by’ and talks of the decline of the harbour and industry. The author of ‘Beauchamp’s Career’, George Meredith was born in 1828 in Portsmouth, the son of a flamboyant tailor. Later, Meredith concealed this background, though used details from it in several of his novels. After attending schools in Portsmouth and Southsea, Meredith worked for a London solicitor before publishing his first poem in 1849. In the same year he married Mary Ellen Nicholls, the widowed daughter of poet and essayist Thomas Love Peacock. Meredith sat for the famous painting by Henry Wallis ‘The Death Of Chatterton’, which depicted the poet who had ended his own life by taking arsenic. Unfortunately in 1857, Meredith’s wife left him for the artist who had painted him. Meredith had been writing poetry and essays, but from this point he turned his hand to novels too. Today he is chiefly remembered for the novel ‘The Egoist’ of 1879, written three years after ‘Beauchamp’s Career’. George Meredith wrote for fifty years and by his death in 1909 had been president of the Royal Society of Authors and was a revered man of letters, whose admirers included Thomas Hardy, Henry James and Robert Louis Stevenson. Anthony Trollope described his elegant prose as ‘twisted into curl-papers’, but his style is too intricate for modern tastes and sadly today his works receive less attention than they deserve. An October garden I

’m never one to be defeated but I’m glad to see the back of that disastrous summer. It really has been a disappointment for many in the garden, with seeds struggling to get going, flowers failing to give off any decent sort of display, and lots of fruit failing miserably. Still onwards and upwards there’s always next year! As Spring is the preparation season for summer, so Autumn is for Winter and we are well and truly into Autumn now, with the darker evenings and colder days. In fact in many ways Autumn is the preparation season for the rest of the year so whatever you do now will reap benefits in the coming seasons. It’s time to roll up your sleeves and get out there; after all you’ve spent half the summer indoors anyway. Keep the garden free of any falling leaves, especially on the lawn. They can be a place for bacteria to harbor and they will leave patches on the lawn where they blot out the light. At this time of year a bit of time spent on the lawn will not be wasted. If you are feeling energetic, give the lawn an aerating to break up the compaction. This can be done simply with a fork, unless you have a large lawn, then it may be worth hiring a machine to do it. A feed for the lawn is also a good idea. If you have an artificial lawn then make sure you keep this clear of leaves as they will build up in the lawn as they rot down. Clear away any dead plants or anything

14

that is past its best and give the cleared beds a good forking over, with plenty of added compost. That way they will be ready for the new planting. If you have bark mulch on the beds then give it a top up, as it does rot down over time. Whilst digging in the garden, now is the time to lift any tubers such as dahlias for protection over winter. They can be stored in a dry place such as the shed. It’s also a very good time of year to move any shrubs or divide larger shrubs. This is a really good time of year to give fences, sheds and decks a coat of protection. Not only does it get them ready for the harsher weather and help preserve them, but it also gives you a chance to inspect them for damage. Bearing in mind most of us are now on water meters, I would also take the opportunity to inspect water butts, and guttering to make sure they all work properly and install any more that you can to help keep water use down next year. Looking forward to next year already, most of the gardening centers are well stocked with spring bulbs so don’t miss the boat and get them planted up. You can also plant onions and garlic bulbs ready for next year as well. It really is such a busy time of year in the garden, I always find that I can stand in the garden and look around and see so many jobs that need doing. If you see them, then do them now. A good day’s work in the garden can really knock it into

shape, and it’s a good way to spend a crisp sunny Autumn day Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

Neighbourhood Policing Halloween Advice

Calls, tricks or pranks may be harmless fun to some people but can cause real distress to others. Behaviour such as throwing eggs or flour can also quickly cross the line from being anti-social into causing criminal damage. We would urge anyone who is planning on going out trick or treating to act sensibly and not cause upset to other members of the community, especially the elderly and vulnerable. Equally important is the necessity for the trick or treaters to stay safe themselves. By following a few guidelines, we can ensure Halloween is safe and trouble-free for everyone. • Adults should always accompany children when trick or treating. Young people should never go trick or treating alone. • Do not knock on the doors of strangers - only go to people you know. • Never go into a stranger’s house • Unless pre-arranged, do not visit elderly members of the community. Be careful not to frighten vulnerable people. • Keep your tricks within the law anything that results in damage is an offence and will be dealt with as such. • Stay safe, keep to places that you know and are well lit. Do not take short cuts through gardens, alleyways or parks.

• Watch out for traffic - drivers might not see you. • If you are wearing a mask make sure that you can see where you are going and are aware of your surroundings. • Carry a torch and a fully charged mobile phone (if you have one). Do NOT approach houses with the ‘NO Trick or Treating’ signs. They are there for a reason.

Shopping Thefts

We have recently seen an increase in thefts of wallets, purses and mobile phones, here are a few simple rules to follow to help prevent you from becoming the next victim; SHOPPERS SHOULD ADOPT THE FOLLOWING CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE HOW TO PREVENT BECOMING A VICTIM OF PURSE DIPPING;• Think about putting your purse in a front pocket rather than in an open bag. v Men should also keep their wallet in a front pocket rather than in their back pocket. • Use a handbag that can be closed properly so that it is more difficult for someone to reach in. • Keep your handbag in front of you so you can see it at all times. v If you use a handbag with a strap, wear it across your body and not just over you. • If you keep your purse in a shopping bag, put your purse at the bottom and not at the top and use a shopping bag that can be closed. • Avoid carrying around large amounts of cash.

• Keep your cash card separate from your cheque book and pin number. • Be aware of the people immediately around you. • Report incidents straight away.

Safeguarding your mobile phone

• keep your phone out of sight in your pocket or handbag when not in use • use your phone's security lock code, if it has one • record details of your electronic serial number (ESN) and consider separate insurance • some phones have an IMEI number which is a unique i dentifier for the phone; you can obtain this number by typing *#06# (star hash 06 hash) into your mobile phone and it will display a 15 digit number • property mark your phone with your postcode and door number to help police identify stolen ones • report a lost or stolen phone to the police immediately • inform your service provider if your phone is stolen or lost Don't... • attract attention to your phone when you are carrying or using it in the street • park in isolated or dark areas • leave your phone in an unattended car - if you must, lock it out of sight. It only takes seconds for a thief to smash a window and steal your phone. By taking these simple precautions, you can protect your phone.

Christmas is a busy time of year for Santa - last year 45,310 letters were delivered to children and families in South London and the South East - but he always makes time to write to the children on his good list. There are five magical styles of NSPCC Letter from Santa for children of all ages, making them the ideal gift for families with more than one child as each child can receive a truly unique letter. Santa can even write a special letter to celebrate Baby’s First Christmas — a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Each letter is uniquely personalised with the child’s name, age, address, gender and best friend’s name, and

there’s also the chance to include a final ‘P.S.’ thought from Santa when you order online. The letters are beautifully illustrated and arrive via reindeer

mail to make the experience truly unforgettable. Children will be amazed that Santa knows them so well! By sending a Letter from Santa, supported by Heart FM, you can make a child’s Christmas and help the NSPCC to protect children all year round through its projects and services including ChildLine — the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline and online service for children and young people in distress or danger. Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa will help ChildLine be there whenever a child seeks help either online or by phone. And every £25 raised will enable a trained practitioner to deliver one hour of support through the NSPCC’s helpline for adults who are concerned about a child. The reindeer mailroom will be open from 1 October until 17 December 2012, and all those who request a Letter from Santa this year will be entered into a free prize draw to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Lapland for a family of four. From 1 October, you’ll be able to find us online at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa or alternatively you can call 0845 839 9304 to place your order.

How to become a foster carer R

ita, a foster carer, talks about how she became interested to help care for children. “I never thought I could foster until I contacted The Foster Care Agency. I was worried I was too old, didn’t have the right skills, or just wasn’t the ‘right’ kind of person. I first became interested in fostering when I watched a programme a few years ago about children in foster care. I thought ‘I could do that’, but I’d left school with few

qualifications and was busy bringing up my own three children. Over the years I’d think about fostering every time there was something on telly about it, or read a story in the newspaper; I’d hear terrible reports about the things that happened to children and young adults and wonder what I could do to help. I kept seeing The Foster Care Agency’s ad and eventually my daughter and a friend of mine persuaded me to phone. I called The Foster Care Agency and the staff member was really helpful and friendly, they told me all about the different types of fostering available and what happens in the assessment as well as assuring me there were lots of carers just like me! They sent me some more information about fostering and a few days later an experienced social worker from The Foster Care Agency came to visit me and my family where we got to ask them all the questions I needed to before deciding that fostering was definitely for me. That was three years ago and I can honestly say that becoming a foster carer is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I’ve met fellow carers from all different backgrounds and cultures and during on-going training and support we share experiences and knowledge to enable us to support the children and young adults and sometimes parents and babies placed in our care. It can be challenging at times, but I’ve never regretted my decision to foster. Nothing is as rewarding as watching a child blossom through your love, support and nurturing.” Together with our 24/7 support you can change the outcome of a young person’s life. So if you are interested in making a difference we would love to hear from you. You can call us at The Foster Care Agency on free phone 0808 1788 909.

Could You Foster? Who can he turn to? He thinks he’s alone. Can you provide the support he needs? TFCA is recruiting foster carers in your area. To find out more please contact us.

All about Verrucae‌

V

errucae are warts that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet. They can even be found around the edges of the nails. They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and are passed from person to person by direct contact. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal

changing/showering areas. An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up the virus.

Are verrucae serious? Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin.

Who gets verrucae? Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone. Some individuals are more susceptible than others.

How do I know if I have a verrucae? The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots. These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained.

How do I treat my verrucae? Once a diagnosis has been made, our podiatrist, Karen, will carryout an individual assessment of your overall health issues in relation to treatment. Karen will then advise you on a variety of treatments that are available both within the clinical setting and for you to try at home. Further advice will also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future. If you suspect you have a verrucae or indeed any other foot problem or simply would like a foot health check, please feel free to see Karen and have a foot health check? You can also book an appointment by calling us on 01273 455080, email us at email@ firstfootclinic.co.uk, visit our website at www.firstfootclinic.co.uk or pop in: 84 High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea. 26
