SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK
OCTOBER 2014
Editor’s comment Welcome. In this month’s issue of Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine Judy Upton’s article about the Thatched Cottages in Shoreham is fascinating to read, we probably all have admired them and their uniqueness in our travels around Shoreham. They certainly add character to Shoreham which is continually evolving with newer homes being added to Shoreham and Southwick and therefore we feel its important to keep our areas historical past alive. If you love to have a great garden for the autumn then Mark Oakley has tips for you with this month latest gardening article on page 12. We also have Jeannette Lamb latest which is about local public houses in the area, maybe the Duke of Wellington is one of your favourite place to relax in! Good news is that there is a new college in the very centre of Shoreham. Find out all about it on page 24. Every month we have local events which we endeavour to put in the magazine. You can find them throughout the magazine as well as in our What’s on Pages. We hope you enjoy this month’s edition. Please continue to send in your articles, events and local activities. The copy date for the November issue is the 10th of October. Until then, have a safe Halloween and of course a reminder that the clocks will be going back an hour on the 26th of October as we head towards winter. I hope that you have a lovely October. Warm Regards, Angela.

The Matchgirls Based on the book and lyrics by Bill Owen, with music by Tony Russell, Southwick Opera will be holding their production at the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick on the 13-15th November at 7.30pm each evening with a matinee on Saturday 15th November at 2.30pm. Based on fact, the story tells of a strike by the girls in a match factory in 1888, when unions were still groping for recognition and mass withdrawal of labour was an almost unheard of strategy in industrial relations. The match-cutters finally rebel against working conditions in which young girls had their jaws rotted away by phosphorus, and discipline was maintained by a system of crippling fines and sanctions. A grim episode, perhaps, but not many minutes of the play are allowed to pass before the natural ebullience of the traditional Cockney sparrow helps to create gay, sparkling entertainment which warms the heart, yet retains the essential drama of the central theme. The incongruously named “Hope Court” is the setting for much of the play, for it is there the workers live in shabby tenements. Desperation turns Kate, the tenement girl, into a reckless strike-leader, and complicates her courtship with Joe, a docker. Annie Besant, the liberal reformer, champions the strikers’ cause and plays a vital part in bringing about their ultimate victory over what was then a callous management. Tickets £10-£12 and can be booked from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or visit www.southwickcommunitycentre.org.uk
80th Anniversary Playwriting competition
The Sussex Playwrights’ Club has announced a playwriting competition to help celebrate its 80th Anniversary in 2015. New plays in any genre (not musicals) are welcome, lasting from a minimum of 75 minutes to a maximum of 100 minutes — containing the word (or number) ‘eighty’ somewhere in the text. (This does not have to form a major part of the plot — it can be just a simple, passing reference.) All entries should be written for the stage with a maximum of seven roles, including any off stage voices. Please note that single monologues will not be accepted. There will be three prizes of £260, £180 and £80 respectively, with a rehearsed ‘script-in-hand’ reading of the first placed play as part of the Club’s 80th Anniversary celebrations. (It is also possible that readings will be given at Club meetings of those scripts in second and third place.) Plays must be written in English and be the original work of the writer and not an adaptation. They should not have been staged before a paying audience, broadcast or published, nor previously given a reading at SPC. All scripts should be submitted in hard copy (not electronic), securely fastened and with the pages clearly numbered. The title page should contain the plays title and the writers pseudonym. The read name of the writer should not appear anywhere on the script; instead, there should be a sealed envelope (with the play’s title and the writers pseudonym written on the front) containing the writers real name, postal address and email contact. Each entry must be accompanied with a cheque for £7, made out to The Sussex Playwrights’ Club. (Scripts will not be returned, so the original hardcopy should not be submitted.) NSPCC teams up with Santa
Children’s charity the NSPCC is once again teaming up with Santa to make children’s Christmas wishes come true by sending them a personalised Letter from Santa, sent direct from the North Pole via Rudolph Mail. The colourful, beautifully illustrated letters include the child’s (or big kid’s) name, age, gender, and a few other details which only Santa could know. Santa has even written a special poem to celebrate baby’s first Christmas too – a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Christmas is an exciting time of year but for some children it can be an incredibly difficult and lonely time. By requesting a Letter from Santa for a suggested donation of £5, the NSPCC can be there for vulnerable children, giving them someone to turn to when they need advice and support, this Christmas and beyond. Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa could help the NSPCC’s ChildLine service be there whenever a child seeks help either online or by phone. Every £12 raised could help trained ChildLine Schools Service volunteers talk to one primary school child about abuse, improving their understanding of abuse and how they can stay safe. The ChildLine Schools Service has already spoken to 257 children in schools across Brighton and Hove. Tracey Bravo, NSPCC community fundraising manager, said: “Christmas is such magical time of year for children so why not bring even more magic and excitement by ordering a Letter from Santa for a friend or relative and support the NSPCC during the festive season.” Santa’s mailroom is open until 15 December 2014, and all those who request a Letter from Santa this year will be entered into a draw to win a Center Parcs holiday for a family of four. Request your Letter from Santa from 1 October 2014 at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa or by calling 0845 839 9304. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Investments – are you willing to take a risk? I N THE CURRENT climate may people are struggling to get a return on their investments. For many years people tucked their money away in the building society where they felt safe and were receiving a reasonable rate of interest. As we all know interest rates are extremely low. It has become more and more difficult to get a return from your capital. The tried and tested route no longer gives the required return which has led to problems for many investors, especially retired people who were depending on their capital to provide an income. So, what can be done? The consensus among many people seems to be that you just can’t get a return on your money nowadays, but with some research you may find that there are assets that you can invest in which will still provide a return. One of the first things a financial adviser will do is to find out what level of risk you are willing to take with your capital. It is often a good idea to bring some diversity to your investments, investing in a number of areas, but the key is that you need to feel comfortable with the level of risk you are taking.
longer term? Do you need it to provide you with an income? Is this the only capital you have? Would you be able and willing to withstand shorter term losses for longer term gains? It is important to make sure that your investment suits you, and that you feel comfortable with it. If you are concerned with any of the areas above and would like to take some advice, for a free initial consultation, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer independent advice and would be happy to assist. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
What is meant by risk?
There are many different types of risk which people often confuse. Mainly, people refer to one of two things: Firstly that the company they are investing in defaults; or secondly that they invest in assets which fall in value because of market conditions, such as shares which could decline in value. We will focus on the second. Unless you select an investment that provides a guaranteed return, or in cash such as the building society where the real value of your money could be eroded by inflation, you will see the value of your investment fluctuate. The level of fluctuation depends on what you are invested in. Generally it is well advised to diversify your money amongst different types of assets, such as property, company shares, fixed interest, gilts and cash, all of which have a different level of fluctuation and which will react differently in differing market conditions. The key is to invest you in the right mix of assets so that you feel comfortable with the level of fluctuation or volatility. Generally the higher the risk, the higher the long term return, but even with lower risk investments it is still possible to get some return. There are other things to be taken into account. Would you need access to your capital, or can you leave invested for the 6

SHOREHAM’S THATCHED COTTAGES T HATCHED ROOFS ARE evocative of old England and picture perfect villages. Luckily we still have a few fine examples in our area, particularly in Old Shoreham where Connaught Avenue meets Old Shoreham Road, and also along The Street. Our nostalgic love of thatch may be due to the fact that it was once a growing thing, harvested from our fields or marshes, or the fact that as we see it skilfully laid by thatchers, we are watching a craft that has not changed in centuries. In reality thatch roofs take a lot of hard work to construct, and the task can be made very tricky indeed by the weather. Obviously high winds are an issue, but rain makes the straw over damp and frost makes it too stiff to allow it to be properly laid. Thatch began to be used as a roofing material from the time when humans began to build their first mud huts. It was used to roof virtually every kind of building from shops to churches, until finally, in Tudor times, the size of the mansions demanded by noblemen meant thatching became impractical, and tiles became a more convenient roofing material. In agricultural areas like Shoreham, the corn harvest originally provided the long straw used for most roofs. Now however combine harvesters cut most corn too short and reeds are often used as a thatching material. Reeds are by their nature more weather resistant than straw and a reed roof might last three times as long as a straw thatched one. Straw can however nowadays be treated to make it fire-resistant before it is laid. In the old days, thatched roofs were also seen as convenient homes by mice, which could nest there in large numbers and drop down on unfortunate residents. Where long straw is still sourced and used, it has to be sorted into lengths, graded, and prepared in slightly dampened bundles, in a process known as ‘yelming’. A thatcher gathers around eight bundles on a pronged fork called a ‘jack’ or uses a open funnel shaped channel, known as a strod, to carry it up onto the roof. The ladders used for thatching were extra long and lay against the top slope of the roof. Among the tools used to thatch a roof are needles, knives, mallets and a ‘legget’ that is
10
a nail covered board for combing the thatch. The needles sew the thatch with twine and keep it tight, while runners and spars of hazel can sometimes be used to keep it in place. Depending on the size of the roof and how elaborate the design was, thatching a roof could take a week or even two. At the top of Connaught Avenue, there are examples of the straw models placed for decoration by thatchers on a roof’s ridge. Many, as here in Shoreham, are in the shape of birds, often pheasants. Cockerels, foxes and squirrels and hedgehogs are among wildlife depicted in straw on roofs around the country. Old Shoreham’s thatched cottages and tranquil rural scenes once brought artists such as Brook Harrison here to paint them. May of the thatched cottages have sadly been demolished, including Slater’s Cottage, which stood where Colville Avenue joins Connaught Avenue in 1930. Two bungalows now stand on the site. Another pair of cottages, originally side-by-side The Street, to the north of Adur Avenue that were knocked down in 1946. Others have been removed as recently as the 1960s, including one that once faced onto the Steyning Road beside St Nicolas church. Once Old Shoreham boasted a street – Malthouse Lane, clustered with cottages but most were demolished with the modernisation of the area. Even the famous old post office cottage near the top of Connaught Avenue was during the 1950s under threat, though public outcry eventually saved it. It seems inconceivable now that town planners did once not value these old buildings. Other cottages that were once thatched now have tiled roofs, which of course need less maintenance, and do not pose the fire risk of thatch. Today thatchers are very much in demand and in some areas there is as much as a year long waiting list to get a roof rethatched. Country skills are having something of a renaissance however and it is hoped that enough young people will be trained in thatching roofs to ensure this traditional method of roofing continues for generations to come. A DECENT SUMMER
I
T’S BEEN A pretty decent long summer, extending well into September with some very nice warm sunny days. It always seems a bit strange when the weather is like this in September as the evenings are rapidly drawing in, towards the clocks changing and it seems that you are holding your breath with every new day, hoping it will be a
12
nice day and keeping the real Autumn at bay for as long as possible. It really is a case of making the most of it. All around the garden plants are still trying to give off the last of their displays, so make the best of it. It’s also worth giving them a helping hand for next year as well. A few applications of liquid fertilizer and some decent compost dressed around the base of a plant, regardless of whether it’s in the ground or in a pot really will help to give it a boost during the colder months. It is also a great help for any flowers that come from bulbs, as they draw the energy down into the bulb ready for next year, giving a much better display. Make the most of any dead or dying plants by chopping them up and putting them on the compost heap ready to help with next year’s compost. It’s also that time of year when as soon as you clear a space in the garden, it’s time to start planting bulbs in the ground ready for next year. I really enjoy doing this. It’s like you’re storing up a surprise of colour ready for next year, that only you know about. With so many varieties and colours available in garden centers and on the internet there really is no limit to what you can do, so it’s well worth giving it a try. Don’t forget to give the lawn a bit of love as well. The summer has not been so hot that we’ve suffered from drought conditions, but even so it will really appreciate an autumn weed and feed. If you have time, clearing the dead grass, or thatch from it will greatly improve its condition for next year, and remember to clear dead leaves from the lawn as soon as possible, as they will; deny areas of the lawn light, which can lead to bald spots. We often get clients asking when they can reseed or lay new turf to repair or renew lawns. This is an ideal time as the ground is warm, the temperature is lower, with more moisture in the night, and it’s less likely to be walked on as much. A lawn never stops growing, even in the depths of winter, it just slows down. So despite the onset of the darker days of winter on the horizon, there’s still a lot to do and enjoy in the garden, so get out there and give it a go. ACEMAKING IS A modern craft skill with an ancient history – lace has been made and worn for centuries. Its heyday was in 16th century Venice and from there it spread all over Europe and the world, taken by the fashionable and the rich to show off their wealth. The high value of lace was somewhat reduced by the Industrial Revolution, when weaving machines were made that could come near to copying the finest of laces, and lace became affordable for all, but the hand skills practised in the early days continue to find contemporary enthusiasts. Lace itself continues to feature in the fashion world, being shown on the cat-walks regularly. Whilst it is no longer economic to produce hand-made lace commercially, amateur lacemakers

today enjoy the fascinating process of weaving and stitching delicate patterns, both traditional and contemporary, in silk, cotton and linen thread and revel in the glorious designs of the past. The group has been meeting there for over 30 years and is always open to new members. Tuition is given for bobbin-lace, which is a weaving process, although lace can be made by many different processes including pillow lace, needlelace, crochet, knitting and tatting. VET ADVICE
IS YOUR PET IN PAIN?
This is a daily debate Hannah Capon (MA Vet MB MRCVS) from Coastway Vetinary group has with owners, and one she feels compelled to write about
P
AIN IS DEFINED as an unpleasant feeling that is conveyed to the brain. The discomfort felt by the individual signals actual or potential injury to the body. However perception of pain will depend on many other variables such as location of pain, cause of the pain, the duration of the pain, and the individuals own perception of pain. We have all heard the phrase “he has a high pain threshold”. Logically you would think the longer pain is suffered the more intolerable it would become, but this is often not true. Our bodies learn to live with it, habituate to it, and we frequently take medication or alternative therapies to try and reduce it. It is called chronic pain. A recent article in the news suggests that at least 8 million people suffer chronic pain in the UK, seeking a variety of therapies and
medication to reduce it. Just imagine this; what if we did not know about pain relieving medication, the existence of doctors or the benefits of complimentary therapies. What would we do? We would learn to live with it. We would use our bodies differently to try and accommodate it or reduce it. We see this in our own older generation. This is what happens in our pets. Yes,
they may cry out or obviously limp when the pain is too much to bear, but often they try and live with it giving subtle signs of inability or discomfort, such as a change in the way they walk. Stiffness on getting up. Inability or hesitation in climbing the steps or getting into the car. Lagging behind or becoming distracted on their normal walk. Seeming unenthusiastic to play with you or greet you. Or it maybe as subtle as a slightly reduced appetite. Yes, it is a consequence of ageing. We will all suffer chronic pain at certain points in our lifetimes, and this becomes more likely as we get older. But considering there are readily available means to reduce pain, which we freely take for ourselves, is it right to deny these to our beloved pets. So, please when you take your dog for their next walk, or you watch your cat mooch around the house, look for their subtle cues telling us they are uncomfortable, and if you are unsure then have a chat with your vet.

Re-furbishment of the pub is ongoing. New ladies toilets, a balcony and a cosy nook in a pleasant garden where you can enjoy the company of friends are all recent additions. ‘Wellington Brew House is expected to be up and running soon, producing house ales and take-home beers – all under the watchful eye of award winning brewer Rob Jones and his daughter Eve’. All the staff are musicians, and there is a wide range of musical skills to be enjoyed most nights. The Wellington Wailers, singing traditional sea shanties are making a name for themselves, and perform on the 3rd Thursday of every month. A hot beverage is always available, as well as WiFi and daily newspaper and there is no objection to visitors bringing their own food – but there is a cafe next door. On the 2nd Tuesday of every month, over 80 budding Ukulele players start arriving from 6 pm to find a place to sit in the pub,
22
and enjoy the evening singing and playing their Ukulele! On the 3rd Tuesday of every month, it’s Open Mic night, when anyone can ‘have a go’. SImply visit the website for the latest information: www.dukeofwellingtonbrewhouse.co.uk This is a traditional pub – live beer live music every Friday Saturday from 9 pm, and Sundays from 5 pm. Music lovers – see you there! (Oh I forgot to add – entertainment is FREE!)

IS YOUR PODIATRIST / CHIROPODIST REGISTERED?
This month Karen Burrett, podiatrist at the First Foot Clinic, Shoreham, provides an insight into the Health and Care Professions Council and what it means to you. The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is an independent UK-wide regulator established to protect the public. They do this by way of a register of professionals who meet their professional standards and they will take action against registered professionals who do not meet those standards or who use a protected title illegally. So what does this mean for me? This means that health and care professionals registered with the HCPC are genuine and meet national standards. This offers you protection if professionals fail to meet these standards. You can also check with us that a professional is registered. To check if a health and care professional is registered you will need their surname and location / post code or registration number and then either visit: www.checktheregister.org, telephone: 0845 300 4472 or ask to see their registration card or certificate. Karen Burrett and Gaynor Platt at the First Foot Clinic in Shoreham’s High Street are both registered with the HCPC.
