SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

OCTOBER 2015

Editor’s comment Welcome to the October issue of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to apologise to all our readers for the unfortunate choice of photograph on the September issue after the terrible crash we had at the Shoreham Airshow. We could not predict that such a disaster would have occurred after the last issue had gone to print. We send our condolences to all the families and friends who suffered the loss of those dearest to them. The residents of Shoreham, Southwick and surrounding areas have been incredible in their support. There is a memorable ‘Bridge of Light’ and ‘Bridge of Flowers.’ It shows what an incredible and giving community we live in. In helping the communities and people who were affected by the crash the official Shoreham Airshow Fund has raised approximately £50,000. You can read more about in on page 18. We hope that you will enjoy reading this months issue. We have all our wonderful contributors as well as latest news of what’s been happening in the area. We have a crossword in this months issue kindly supplied by Gordon Guest. We hope that this will be a regular feature. If you would like to publicise a local activity for November, please send copy by the 12th of October. Warm regards, Angela

PLAYGROUND REFURBISHMENT PROJECT Adur & Worthing Councils begin £80,000 worth of work to refurbish two popular playgrounds - Kitty’s Field in Worthing and Buckingham Park in Shoreham-by-Sea. As schools all over the Adur & Worthing area welcomed back their pupils this week and the summer holidays are officially over, Adur & Worthing Councils have started work on two major new playground refurbishment projects. At the beginning of the summer, Council officers met with local children and their parents/carers in Worthing and Shoreham to ask what they would like in their new playgrounds and were shown brochures of what might be available. Now, just a few months later, and taking on board the children’s wishes, work begins on both playgrounds. Dominion Road, Worthing (also known as ‘Kitty’s Field’ - after a horse that used to graze there) is to be fully revamped, with 11 new pieces of play equipment. The cost is £50,000 and the new playground is due to be finished by 9th October 2015. Buckingham Park in Shoreham-by-Sea is due to benefit from over £30,000 of investment in brand new play equipment.

Adur East Lions Awareness Day Adur East Lions will be hosting an Awareness Day at Shoreham Methodist Church on Saturday 10th October 2015 from 10am to 12noon. There will be cake and book stalls along with many others run by local charities that have been supported by Adur East Lions. Free tea and coffee will be provided. The Lions will be there with details about their forthcoming activities including afternoon tea parties which are held to provide social interaction, fun and entertainment for the older generation of the local community, Santa’s Grotto at Mayberry Garden Centre and a Quiz Night to be held in October. The Lions will also have information regarding previous fundraising ventures such as the popular Donkey Derby. These events provide support to so many deserving individuals, groups and charities. A list of beneficiaries will be available. How well do you know Shoreham? Come along and take part in our picture quiz, ‘Where was Jasper the Lion?’ To find out more information regarding Adur East Lions please visit their website www.adureastlions.org.uk their Facebook page www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub or contact them by telephone on 0845 833 7356.

Private lives

Councillor Keith Dollemore, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment adds: “Although a busy and vibrant play area, the equipment was old and rather tired, so it is heartening to see this small but important project go full steam ahead. These two projects perfectly illustrate the Council’s commitment to encouraging healthy active lifestyles for our residents, of all ages.”

Find out all about the private lives of mice, voles and shrews with the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Join tutor Laurie Jackson for ‘An Introduction to the small mammals of Sussex’ at Woods Mill nature reserve at Henfield on Friday 11 September, 10am – 4pm. Start the day looking for wood mice or yellow-neck mice, bank and field voles, and both common and water shrews which will have been caught overnight in special humane traps. This will be followed by a classroom session learning all about their lifestyles. There will be a second outdoor session in the afternoon. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Cost: Members of Sussex Wildlife Trust £30, Non-members £42. On-line booking is essential, for information please visit: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/whatson or call 01273 497561.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Make your pension work for you

I

F YOU ARE retiring soon, you may have started to go through your pension paperwork. This often means checking through several plans you have accumulated during your working life. All of your plans may be different, they would have been taken at various times which means that different pension legislation could apply to each plan. Some give benefits that you should try and keep and others not. It can become confusing when you are trying to piece the information together and see how best to take your benefits. The new flexible pension legislation introduced in the 2014 budget makes the process even more complicated. There are many options available depending on whether you need cash, for example to pay off a mortgage, or if your priority is income. Although much criticised in the press over the past few years, sometimes purchasing an annuity is the best option, these can give you a guaranteed income for the rest of your life,

…sometimes purchasing an annuity is the best option, these can give you a guaranteed income for the rest of your life, something which some people find very attractive. There can be drawbacks to this though… something which some people find very attractive. There can be drawbacks to this though, once set up the plan can’t be changed and if someone’s circumstances change they cannot amend the annuity. Death benefits can be restrictive, so if someone dies earlier than they imagined an annuity could ultimately prove bad value for money. Some people prefer a more flexible way of taking their benefits. This may mean keeping the fund invested and taking tax free cash and income from the plan only when needed. If arranged this way death benefits are greatly improved. If a person dies before the age of 75 they can leave a tax free lump sum to their spouse or other beneficiaries. Also pension funds are not chargeable to Inheritance Tax and they grow tax free, so they are a good place to leave your money until you actually need it. 6

If you do need your money straightaway, you could withdraw the whole of the fund. Beware though, only 25% of your fund will be paid tax free, the rest will be taxed as income. Perhaps it may be better to withdraw the funds over several tax years to pay less tax. Everybody’s situation is so different, so it is essential to take advice when you retire. This will make sure you get the most of your hard earned pension fund and make it work for you. For independent advice on any of the above please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. STILES IN THE ADUR VALLEY

O

N A COUNTRY walk through the Adur Valley, some of the footpaths require a clamber over a wooden stile. In our area these usually consist of a two-step stile with a double-rail. The steps pass through the wooden rails so as to provide four steps in all, two up and two down again. It is not known precisely when or where stiles originated. They appear to have come into widespread use soon after farmers and landowners began to fence their fields in on a large scale. This was the result of the Enclosure Acts which were a series of Acts Of Parliament from the 1600s onwards, enclosing open fields and common land in the UK, to create legal property rights to land that was previously considered common. Between 1604 and 1914, over 5,200 individual Enclosure Acts were put into place, enclosing 6.8 million acres of (almost 11,000 square miles). The stiles themselves were often constructed because the landowner was legally compelled to keep public footpaths and rights of way open for travellers across his or her fields. The stile relies on the fact that most able-bodied people can climb these steps, whereas sheep and cattle cannot. Unlike gates they cannot be left open and cause animals to stray. Stiles have never been ornate or crafted to any great degree. They are something the farmer often built himself, or bought from a hurdle-maker when purchasing the rest of his wooden fencing. Hurdle-makers originally created the post and rail fences that preceded the wire fences now most often used to enclose fields. Stiles also sometimes have a ‘dog latch’ or ‘dog gate’ to the side of them, which can be lifted to enable a dog to get through. Elsewhere in the country, including Derbyshire and Cornwall, stiles may be constructed from stone as part of hardwearing walls of stone. In some areas, the stile is more of a wooden

8

stepladder with numerous steps. There is also the Squeeze Stile, which is commonly used where footpaths cross dry stone walls in England. Instead of climbing over the wall using wooden or stone crossbars, there is a vertical gap in the wall, usually no more than 25 centimetres (9.8 in) wide, and usually with stone pillars on either side to protect the structure of the wall. The gap must be narrow enough that any livestock in the fields fields either side of the stile would not be able to fit through. Sometimes a Squeeze Stile may be ‘V’ shaped, meaning skinny human legs can pass through, but not a sheep. With the advent of the motorcar these stiles have fallen from favour as lambs and small calves could still squeeze through and possibly stray onto the highway. Recent changes in UK government policy towards farming has encouraged landowners in upland areas to make their land more available to the public, and this has seen an increase in the number of stiles and an improvement in their overall condition. However, on many popular paths, traditional stiles are increasingly replaced by gates or kissing gates – or, where the field is arable, the stile can be removed altogether, as there are no longer any animals to control. This is partly due to an awareness for the need for disabled access to open the enjoyment of the countryside up to all. At Mill Hill when they wanted to graze cattle for the benefit of nature, erecting a fence and gate or stile would have detracted from the appearance of the wild Downland, and so cattle grids are in place to stop the cows from straying from the area. Along banks of the Adur, and in various places along the South Downs Way in our area, traditional wooden stiles can still be seen, adding rustic charm to a country walk. Judy Upton

Arrival of autumn S UMMER IS STARTING to become a fading memory now, with the temperatures dropping and the shorted days. Autumn is definitely here, but as always there is plenty you can find to do and more importantly enjoy in the garden This is one of the most important times of the year for looking forward, rather than back. Not in the way you look forward in spring top, eagerly awaiting the next shoot to appear, but looking forward to plan what will be starting to appear in spring. Plan things right now and do the hard work, with the likes of spring bulbs, moving and dividing plants and preparing new

12

areas, and you will reap the rewards of a wonderful display in the spring If you are going to start planning ahead, then I always think a good place to start is where we start all of our garden projects, whether big or small. That is to say, clear the decks. Get rid of anything that’s past its sell by date, dead, or that you just don’t like. Have a good clear through all the beds and pots, but also through the rest of the garden in general. Get barbecues covered, summer toys and furniture away. Even if the garden is staring to look bare as it comes to the end of its most productive season, a tidy garden always looks better. It makes sense as well, as it removes the chance for many diseases to lurk over winter, in dead plant material. Give the greenhouse a good tidy up and a wash down to kill off any lurking bacteria that will over winter and cause problems next year. There are various washes on the market, but I find hot water and soap do a good enough job. The same applies to any empty pots or containers. It’s also well worth airing the greenhouse on a few colder days. Have a good check through your seed collections. If there are any that are well past the sell by date ditch them. It’s not worth the effort of trying to grow something with a low chance of any success. Also if you have collected your own seeds, check them regularly to make sure they show no signs of rot. If they do, ditch them Try and make use of any dead plants however. Unless they are diseased they can all go on the compost heap. The compost from empty containers and grow bags, can be used to improve the soil in the beds. Also take the time to get some decent compost onto the beds. Even if you are not fit enough to dig it in, or don’t have the time, a good covering on top, will soon be pulled down into the ground over the winter by worms and frost action. It’s also worth taking the time to clean off tools and give them a sharpen, so they are ready for the next season. Sharp tools always make the work a lot easier. Clean tools reduce the risk of spreading or harbouring diseases between plants It may seem like a lot to do, but on a bright crisp day, you can achieve a lot, and it doesn’t take long to do. Once done it gives you the chance to stand back and see what you actually have in the garden, and more importantly, what you would like to do with it. So even on a wet cold weekend, you can start making your plans in comfort indoors, or indulge in a few trips to the garden centres Mark Oakley, Any Garden To advertise call: 01273 452065

Sport Taping Sports taping is a common technique used to provide support around injured muscles and joints. It is very common in sports such as football, rugby and athletics to assist recovery and allow sportspeople to continue with their activity. Louis Jones says there are occasions when taping can be an effective way to prevent injuries from escalating into bigger problems, without the need to spend time sitting on the sidelines or lengthy periods out of action. Sports tape works in a few different ways: Muscle support: Most sports tapes are designed to stretch with and support muscles as they move, also helping with delaying muscle fatigue, which can result in a strain, when a

muscle is overworked. Re-educating muscles: When muscles become injured they will quickly weaken, meaning that they will work harder than normal. Taping can assist muscles in a way that allows for them to contract as much as they are capable, whilst reducing stress so that they can get stronger. Stabilising joints: When you sprain a ligament around a joint, the joint can become weak and unstable, meaning that shearing forces inside the joint can lead to wear and tear. Taping protects the joint from these shearing forces and assists the role of the weak ligaments. It should be mentioned that with any supports r taping techniques, this is not a long-term solution to the problem in this instance. Strengthening the muscles around a joint and practicing balancing exercises will lead to greater stability, which can reduce the risks of long term problems like Osteo Arthritis (OA). Improving circulation: According to claims made by some sports taping companies, taping can improve circulation through its compressive ability, which means that healing will be quicker. Assisting the reduction of swelling: There are techniques with sports tape that help reduce swelling and draw out bruising more quickly than just rest and ice packs. Ligament sprains, where there can be a lot of swelling and bruising present, can benefit from sports tape. It is not recommended to continue sport with an injury without seeking advice from a sports injury professional first. Although you can buy sports tape online or from various shops, it is most effective when it is applied by someone who is trained to apply it. There are waterproof versions that work well with swimmers or sportspeople who perform outdoors. If you have a sports injury, that you feel may be helped by sports taping, feel free to contact me for more information on 01273 467614 or email me at info@louisjonesphysio. co.uk. I also stock Rock Tape if you would like to purchase it from me directly (with free application). To advertise call: 01273 452065

Shoreham Airshow fund tops £50,000 D ONATIONS TO THE official Shoreham Airshow Fund have topped an estimated £50,000 in the first ten days. With hundreds of people continuing to fundraise to help the people and communities affected by the crash, the final total could be much higher. The money will go to help the bereaved families and communities affected by this disaster and will also support people in the longer term when issues they face as a result of the incident become apparent. The Foundation is working closely with police family liaison offices, advice services and the local authorities to identify the immediate, short- and long-term needs of the people affected so that money can go out to support those people as soon as possible. Kevin Richmond, Chief Executive of Sussex Community Foundation who is managing the Fund on behalf of Adur District Council, Brighton & Hove City Council, West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council, says: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of people from Sussex, across the UK and from abroad who have been donating online, over the phone, by text and by post.” Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, comments: “The community’s response has been truly astounding and working with Sussex Community Foundation has helped give a focus to the donations. By supporting the official Sussex Giving page, donors and fundraisers will be helping to make the money they raise create the maximum effect for the people who need it most. I would also urge everyone to recommend that any shops, pubs, restaurants or businesses currently fundraising join in with the Sussex Giving fund by becoming Official Fundraisers - not only will they benefit from additional promotion through the website, but it’s an added mark of quality which may help to encourage additional donations.” Daniel Humphreys, Leader of Worthing Borough Council, adds: “The way our community has pulled together to

18

contribute to the fundraising effort has been incredible. We have seen businesses large and small organising events, communities coming together for moments of silent reflection and a large number of people taking to the streets to fundraise. I would urge anyone looking to donate to use the official Sussex Giving fund, or contribute to one of the fundraising efforts that have been set up alongside the main fund. This will ensure that all monies raised go to the people who need them the most.” Communities have been fundraising across Sussex to help the people affected including: £4,641 was collected at the Bridge of Lights in Shoreham; The Country Oak pub in Hollingbury raised £4,430 with a weekend of auctions, raffles, karaoke and other entertainments; Customers and staff at eight Morrisons stores across Sussex collected over £9,000; B&Q in Worthing collected over £1,200 from customers and staff; Brighton &Hove Albion FC dedicated their first home fixture of the season to those affected; HSBC branches across Sussex are collecting for the Fund; The Man’s Shop, Worthing is running high street shop collections; Southern Water will be collected money at a recent car show; Cuckmere Emporium ran an art auction at the Alfriston Festival; ASDA in Lancing was selling candles to raise funds; A Haywards Heath residents’ group organised a Fun Day at Hanbury Stadium; Shoreham resident Lori Standen held a music event at Penny’s Bar, Burgess Hill; Tesco Express in Shoreham collected from staff and customers; The Worthing Silver Band performed to raise funds in Worthing town centre; there were many fund raising events (too many to mention here). There are more details of other fundraising activities taking place at www.justgiving.com/sussexgiving where you can donate online or text SAIR10 plus the amount you wish to donate to 70070. You can donate by telephone to Sussex Community Foundation on 01273 409446 (9am5pm, Mon-Fri) with your credit or debit card details. To advertise call: 01273 452065

There has been a murder… We know who has been killed, we know who did it and — most importantly — we know precisely where the body is but, will the crime and the culprits be discovered? Rope, by Patrick Hamilton and presented by the Wick Theatre Company is a masterpiece of suspense, which dates back to 1929, Patrick Hamilton but remains an almost unbearably tense and potent thriller. The play unfolds in real time, covering a single evening in a London house as a grotesque and macabre game is played out for the amusement of the killers. An unsettling drama with some wonderful comedic moments, Patrick Hamilton considered it his finest play and it has long been heralded as one of the greatest plays of the 1920s. The play was famously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock for the Jimmy Stewart film of the same name which remains on the AFI list of the 100 greatest films of all time. Wick’s production will be this year’s entry in the Brighton and Hove Arts Council Drama Awards and promises to be an unmissable treat. Shows start at 7.45pm, 7th to 10th October. Tickets £11.00 from the Barn Box Office on 01273 597094 or visit www.wicktheatre.co.uk.

Ingrown Townails

This month Karen and Gaynor, podiatrists at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, talk about ingrown toenails.

W

HILST THERE ARE some nail shapes that are more prone to developing an ingrown toenail, this problem is commonly caused by trauma or poor toenail cutting. An ingrown toenail is determined by a nail that pierces the flesh of the toe. If severe, the toe may become infected and if left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe so the quicker you treat it, the better. People will often try cut a ‘V’ in the nail to try to prevent ingrown toenails but sadly this is a myth. Cutting the nail straight across, avoiding cutting too low down the sides of the nail is the best way to manage your nails. However if you already have an ingrown toenail, see your podiatrist who may be able to treat you with or without surgery (a minor procedure under local anaesthetic). For more information about the treatment for ingrown toenails or any other foot problem, please make an appointment with our podistrists Karen or Gaynor by contacting us on 01273 455080 or email us at email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or visit our website on www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
