SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

OCTOBER 2016

Editor’s comment Welcome to the Inside Shoreham and Southwick for October.Well Autumn is here with a slight chill to the air in the early morning hours. The weather is still wonderful and we can enjoy lighter evenings just for a bit longer with the clocks going back one hour on Sunday 30th. As the evenings draw in, less time is spent outside especially on the wetter days. As for our front and back gardens, still time to enjoy and of course get going with the latest ideas from Mark on what we could be doing as part of the autumnal tidy up. October is the spooky month with Halloween festivities. Pumpkins being made into lanterns to adorn our windows, trick a treating and fancy dressing. Although fun for young ones, there are the more vulnerable members of our community who find it distressing. We have the latest historical article on the Algernon Charles Swinburne by Judy Upton as well as some investment news with the latest interest rates being lowered with Claire Cook. We also have the latest from Louis Jones on Golfers Elbows and foot care advice from First Foot Clinic. You'll also find news from St Baranabas Charity and what they have been doing with Harley Davidson owners. Additionally, Santander’s contribution to local charity in the area. On a final note, thank you for your continual support of the local businesses who advertise. We hope you enjoy this month's issue. We always try to incorporate as much as possible of your local events and articles; please continue to send them in. Happy Halloween Angela

SOLD DISCOVERS GRANT TO BUY VAN

MY BABY'S TOO YOUNG TO DRINK

SOLD, a charity shop in Shoreham High Street, helps young adults with learning difficulties to work in a retail environment and the owner, Carolyn Shrosbree, has a passionate team helping in the shop. Carolyn was saving money to buy a minibus that would allow her to take her staff out on day trips but also use the vehicle to deliver heavier items purchased from the shop, such as furniture — this would enable to free-up floor space faster in readiness when more donations come in. James Wingate, a mortgage advisor with Santander, nominated SOLD, under one of Santander's charity schemes called The Discovery Grant, for £3500. Anyone from staff to customers can nominate a charity to receive a grant up to £5000 to be able to buy an item for their chosen charity or pay for staff members salary etc. These nominations get entered from across the country then, every month, a selection are chosen that are accepted to receive the funds. SOLD's application was successful which enabled them to buy a customised purple ex-hearse. James, along with Clare Watson, who is a line manager for Santander, presented the cheque to a very excited and grateful team who can now make deliveries and enjoy days out together.

VIETNAMESE SUPPER CLUB

A new monthly Vietnamese supper club in a private house in Southwick is proving to be very popular, not just with local residents, people are also travelling from as far as Portsmouth and Seaford. When husband and wife team Andy and Nancy relocated to Sussex in 2014 they were looking for something with a large entertaining space, somewhere their idea of running a supper club could become a reality. Better known as CaPhe Republic, operating a street food business around Sussex, they are no strangers to sharing their culinary passion. It was when they sold the highly-acclaimed Hampstead restaurant, a five-month tour of Vietnam followed, falling head over heels for the cuisine, which saw the creation of the Vietnamese street food business, driven by a desire to 'get back to basics'. The supper also club gives them the freedom to cook and serve dishes that they can't do from a street food stall. The fivecourse menu was a real showcase of flavours and textures, from the welcome drink of a lychee mojito to the Vietnamese iced coffee to finish. A crispy amuse bouche and 'Goi Con' summer rolls kicked things off in style, followed by beautiful hot and sour prawn soup, fragrant lemongrass chilli chicken, then creamy coconut mango pudding, with the relaxed atmosphere it made it hard to believe the hosts had been anything but calm. www.capherepublic.concept-to-kitchen.com 4

MPs Tim Loughton and Sir Peter Bottomley paid a special visit to Worthing Hospital's Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) awareness day — to support a new campaign advising mums-to-be not to drink any alcohol. My Baby’s Too Young To Drink highlights the growing incidence of foetal alcohol spectrum disorders and, in line with new government guidelines, urges women to stop drinking alcohol completely during pregnancy. The parliamentary representatives for Worthing and Shoreham met with midwives, public health alcohol specialists as well as new mums and commended the proactive approach Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust takes in relation to foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Tim Loughton MP, who sits on the all-parliamentary FASD group, said: “It’s really good to see the enormous amount of work going on at Worthing Hospital to make sure women get a consistent, concise and strong message — no alcohol, no risk. “Worthing Hospital is a fantastic gem and we know that Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the most outstanding trusts in the country but, within that, the Maternity department is also one of the few officially CQC-rated ‘outstanding’ departments nationwide and we know why — because they do such an amazing job.” Sir Peter Bottomley MP praised the midwives’ dedication and commitment to continuous professional development, adding: “This isn’t about lecturing people, it is helping families safeguard the welfare of their own babies and trying to make sure they develop in the best possible way.” FASD is a collective term used to group a number of preventable birth defects and diagnoses that are related to babies being exposed to alcohol while in the womb. Common problems include vision impairment, heart defects, liver problems, hyperactivity and speech and language delays. The World Health Organisation estimates it affects 1% of children and adults, which means that 7,000 babies born in England and Wales each year have FASD. The true figure, however, could be much higher as the condition often goes undiagnosed, or it can be misdiagnosed, for example as autism or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Senior Midwifery Manager for Public Health at Western Sussex Hospitals, Kelly Pierce, said: “We really welcome the FASD Trust’s new campaign. All our midwives already receive mandatory training and attend study days about the significant risks to babies if mums drink alcohol. “Our proactive approach and strong partnership working with the county council’s Public Health team and other agencies like Change Grow Live was recognised by the Care Quality Commission, who rated our department as Outstanding and highlighted it as an area of excellence within in the trust.” If you would like further information about FASD, please visit www.fasdtrust.co.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Investments – has your interest dropped?

D

URING THEIR LIFETIMES people tend to gather various financial products. They receive paperwork throughout the years which sometimes gets filed, and often not! Once people are with a provider they tend to stay with them; it seems far too complicated to change. I disagree with this, for a small amount of effort and time you could get your money under control, understand what you have and make it work harder for you. Not only that, from the people I have dealt with over the years, it seems that once they understand their investments they are far more likely to look after and add to them, it is all positive! For most people financial products such as pensions and investments have been taken at varying times. They were the best on offer at the time, but many have not been reviewed since. People don’t know if they are in a well performing fund, or one which could do better. Most don’t know what charges they are paying and how their performance is being affected.

"What is the next step? Either you have to take the lower rate (which may not even keep up with inflation) or take some advice." Many people’s funds are languishing in old style contracts, but the financial world has moved on. Charges are often lower and the systems for managing your money have greatly evolved. Online systems allow you to check your values and get more in touch with what you have, whether that is pensions, investments or savings plans. Has your interest dropped? You may have invested in fixed rate bonds with the bank or building society a few years ago, you may have been receiving a comparatively high rate of interest. Now the bonds are maturing and the new rates are far lower. What is the next step? Either you have to take the lower rate (which may not even keep up with inflation) or take some advice. There are alternatives to investing in the building society, and at the risk level you feel comfortable with. An IFA can look at other options. Once your finances are better organised, they are easier to manage. A coherent plan makes things far easier to follow and review. The systems can keep your investments at the right risk level for you so that you are not invested at too high, or too low 6

risk. Often your money can be invested in a portfolio which has proactive reviews, ensuring your money is constantly looked after. All of this is at your fingertips, all you need to do is gather the paperwork together and see an IFA such as myself. . If you would like advice on any of the above issues, or need independent financial advice please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. Autumn gardening W

ELL HERE WE are in October already with the clocks about to change and the shorter days definitely with us. Summer wasn’t great to start with, but did get in the last couple of months through August and September, which was a pleasant surprise. It’s time to start slowly battening down the hatches across the garden and getting ready for the Winter and also to look forward to Spring.

10

Rather than a spring clean, an autumn clear up throughout the garden will pay dividends, both in keeping the garden healthy and making it look tidy through the months ahead, when there may be less opportunity to get out into the garden. I always think it pays to be fairly ruthless when it comes to clearing out. Get rid of any old rubbish that is clogging up corners of the garden and the same goes for the beds. If there are plants which really haven’t performed or are in the wrong place, then don’t be afraid to move them or get rid of them. A good tidy up through the beds will pay dividends as well. Once again dig out plants that are no longer worth keeping and give the surface of the soil a good rake through to remove dead leaves. This will help keep diseases down. It’s also a good time to start getting some extra compost forked into the beds, or for an easier option, simply rake the compost across the top of the beds. You’ll be amazed how much of it gets pulled down into the soil by your friendly garden worms. Carry out autumn pruning on shrubs that need it. Don’t be afraid to prune back hard. Most plants will respond well and put on better growth next year. Make sure you remove all the waste you generate from the beds. Once the beds are clear it will leave you with a much better idea of what new planting you can fit into the bed. It’s also a good time for many shrubs to be divided. That simply means that plants that have overgrown into clumps, can be lifted and slit into smaller plants by using a sharp spade. It allows the original plant to grow better and you suddenly have two plants for the price of one. In fact, it’s a good trick you can use with many plants that you buy in garden centres. Always keep your eyes out for ones that can be easily divided, then you really will buy one and get one free! Put the plants back into the beds with plenty o compost and water and its surprising how effective the major surgery can be in producing much better results next year On the subject of a good clear out, give the greenhouse and the shed a good clean out now. This is especially important with the green house. Once emptied give all the surfaces a good wash down. It only needs a wash with hot water and soap and it will transform the place. Not only will it let more light in, but it Is remarkably effective at killing off many of the diseases that lurk around over winter. If the work in the shed and the greenhouse are done now, it means you will have a clear and tidy space to work in the colder wetter months. As always in the garden, it’s about enjoying what you have now, but looking head to make life easy and keeping the garden in a state where you can enjoy it in the future. It never ends, but then again we would get bored if it did! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065

Golfers Elbow This month, Louis Jones will be talking about the painful condition known as Golfers Elbow, which golfers in particular and other racquet sports players can suffer with.

What is Golfers Elbow?

Golfers elbow, or its correct term Medial Epicondylitis, is an inflammation in the tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm to this inner side of the elbow.

What causes Golfers Elbow?

Sports, such as racquet sports, golf, and even weight lifting, can cause symptoms of golfers elbow, where the stress of

gripping and hitting an object or resisting a heavy object, overstrains the tendons at the point of their insertion at the inside of the elbow.

What are the symptoms for Golfers Elbow?

Symptoms include: • Localised pain into the bony point at the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle). • Pain on gripping with the palm up, lifting weights, or carrying heavy bags. • Pain on stretching the elbow, with the elbow straight and the wrist extended with fingers pointing backwards. • Pain on activities where you swing through striking an object such as a forehand in tennis, golf swing or a bicep curl against resistance. • Pain on pressure or palpation to the inside of the elbow. • Swelling (not that common) and bruising (very rare).

What can we do to help overcome Golfers Elbow?

• Firstly you should apply ice to the affected area of the elbow for 10 minutes. This would normally happen 2 -3 times in the first 48 hours. • Massaging anti-inflammatory gel into the area can greatly benefit you. • Light stretching of the elbow with the elbow straight and pointing fingers away. • Tennis/Golfers elbow straps can alleviate pressure and tension off of the tendons that insert into the elbow. • Acupuncture can be great for curing chronic golfers elbow complaints. • Physiotherapy treatment is very effective for curing Golfers Elbow. • Changing grips on tennis racquets and golf clubs. • Reducing the amount of strenuous activity, and even resting the area can allow for adequate recovery. Harley Davidson owners’ club visit St Barnabas House

Patients, hospice staff and Hogsback Chapter riders pose for a group photo

P

EOPLE BEING CARED for at St Barnabas House enjoyed a special treat as a group of Harley Davidsons visited the hospice recently. Riders from the Hogsback Chapter Harley Owners Group travelled to Worthing from Guildford on Thursday 8 October, arriving at the hospice at approximately 11am to the sound of roaring engines. On arrival they were greeted by those attending the Day Hospice, as well as some of the patients from the hospice’s In-patient Unit, members of staff and volunteers. The people being cared for by St Barnabas have all been diagnosed with advanced progressive life-limiting conditions, and for one person in particular it was a truly special moment. Valerie Wilson, 67, from Upper Beeding has been attending the Day Hospice

Valerie Wilson (right) 16

since December 2015. For her, the Harley Davidsons visit brought back fond memories of her younger years. She used to be a rocker and had not been on a Harley Davidson for over 30 years. Valerie said: “It was absolutely brilliant. I haven’t been on one for over 30 years and I was originally a rocker so this was really, really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. “The bikers were brilliant. They were so friendly and accommodating and it was even better than I thought it was going to be. My thanks go to the hospice for organising it.” Paul Taylor, Hogsback Chapter Road Marshal and lead rider for the day, commented that it was a pleasure to visit

The Day Hospice team

Derek Breedon the hospice for the third year running. He said: “It excites people when they see the bikes and hear the noise. The ones that can come out it’s a pleasure to take. You see the joy on their faces when we turn up and it’s just terrific to see. “One of our lads, Ken, knows people here and he arranged for us to come the first time. This is the third year we’ve done it and hopefully there will be many more.” Julie Morrison, Day Hospice Activity Co-ordinator at St Barnabas House, said: “It was lovely to see the smiles on patients’ faces and them being able to sit on the bikes. It brings a lot of memories back whether you’re a biker or not. Derek Breedon, who attends the Day Hospice, took the opportunity to pose on one of the Harley Davidsons “I would like to say a big thank you to Paul and his fellow riders for giving up their time to come and visit – they were a lovely bunch of gentlemen. Also thank you to Merry Miller in Goring for providing our buffet for the day.” For more information about the St Barnabas House Day Hospice and the services the hospice provides, please visit: www.stbh.org.uk/dayhospice To advertise call: 01273 452065

Avoiding the pain!

S

UMMER’S OFFICIALLY OVER and many of us are back to routine, stuck at our desks, whether at work or at school, or enduring a daily commute by train or behind a wheel. As the long nights set in, we can find ourselves tired and aching. Shoreham Osteopathy Centre has some suggestions on how to prevent pain and stiffness.

IS POSTURE THE PROBLEM?

This cartoon shows how we have gone from being quadruped apes to biped humans to hump-backed work slaves! Many health-and-safety guides offer a picture of the “perfect posture” for working at a screen. But static postures can actually cause the problems. Even if you sat in this “perfect” posture for eight hours without moving, you would

probably still have backache at the end of the day. Muscles fatigue when contracted or stretched for too long and this can cause pain and aches, sometimes leading to spinal joints being pulled out of their optimum position, which in turn may put pressure on nerves and blood vessels and sometimes even discs. Tight neck and shoulder muscles may also lead to headaches… Instead of holding yourself tensely in a military posture, or expecting the chair to do the work, just try gently engaging your core abdominal muscles and pelvic floor, to keep your spine in “neutral” (try not to round your shoulders forward, or slump or arch your back) and if you start to feel an ache, move. MOVEMENT is key. Gorillas and orangutans probably suffer a lot less back pain than we do as they are pretty much constantly on the move and do a lot more stretching, hanging and balancing than we do!

MAGIC MOVEMENT MICRO-BREAKS

SO , try to ensure that you are never stuck in one position for too long, ie any more than 15-20 minutes. This goes for everything we do, whether working at a school or work desk, a laptop, sitting in a bus, train, car or at a meeting, weeding the garden… Try one of these exercises every 20 minutes and see how you feel! NOTE: you should feel a gentle, relieving stretch with these exercises but no pain.

SHOULDERS

Roll your shoulders up to your ears and then let them roll backwards, feeling a stretch across the front of your chest. Do this 3-5 times.

NECK

Sit comfortably in your chair with a neutral spine, breathe in and as you breathe out, gently lower your right ear towards your right shoulder and hold for 3 seconds. Try to keep the left shoulder from rising up as you do this. You should feel a gentle stretch on the opposite side of the neck. As you breathe in, bring your head back to centre. Repeat on your left side as you breathe out.

UPPER BACK Let us help you find relief from: Back pain, Neck pain Shoulder pain, Knee pain Sports injuries Postural strains Stress-related pain And more… Our caring, qualified and experienced team offer Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports and Remedial Massage, Hypnotherapy, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, 1-1 Pilates sessions Book an appointment (£5 off with this ad) or pop in for a free consultation in our calm and welcoming space, right in the heart of beautiful Shoreham

Sit comfortably with knees hip-width apart, feet on the ground. Hold the middle of the front of your chair seat with your left hand. Keep your hips still, and as you breathe out, gently twist your upper back around to touch the back of your chair seat with your right hand – only twist as far as is comfortable and try to keep your neck in line with your breastbone (don’t overstretch your neck). You should feel a stretch in your upper back. Breathe in and return to centre. Repeat on the other side.

LOWER BACK

Sit as above. Hold your right knee with both your hands. Breathe in and as you breathe out, gently lift your right knee in towards your chest, gently engaging your deep abdominal muscles and curving your lower back to give it a stretch. Breathe in and return to neutral spine. Then repeat on the left side, bringing your left knee towards your chest. If you have a persistent muscular tension or a back or joint problem and would like advice, please do get in touch with our expert team. Choosing the right footwear This month Karen, the podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shorehamby-Sea, talks about the importance of choosing the right shoes for your feet

F

OOTWEAR IS A common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called "If the shoe fits, wear it" found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have

footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few people get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of both men’s and women’s appearance and the sort of shoes that are "acceptable" changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. Here are some quick tips to remember when shoe shopping: • Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes • Feet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest • Buy the right shoe for the purpose • If you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles/ orthotics) • Buying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly. Ensure they fit correctly Contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic. co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
