OCTOBER 2017

Editor’s comment

Inside this issue

Welcome to the October edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick. Autumn has arrived with the heat of the summer gone as we head into the cooler months when we have less light and longer periods of darkness. Before the 16th century, harvest was the term usually used to refer to the season, after this we used the Latin word autumnus. In this month’s issue you can read about Peter Cushing and his time here in Sussex in the latest article by Judy Upton. We also have the latest from St Barnabas on Hospice care week later this month. We have plenty of expert advice this month: Gardening with Mark Oakley; how to avoid golfer’s elbow with Louis Jones; great advice from Fiona Murdoch on how you can be helped using acupuncture if you suffer from migraines. and, as we head towards the colder months, our feet can suffer from ill-fitting footwear, so to prevent that from happening get top tips on how to shop for shoes from First Foot Clinic. I hope you enjoy reading about all the events, local news and activities in Shoreham and Southwick. If you would like to have your event or activity in the November edition, please send copy by the 12th of November. We will endeavour to put it in the spotlight! On a final note, I would like to thank all our contributors for this month and all the local businesses that you find within these pages. Many have been with us since day one. I hope that you have a lovely October. Warm Regards, Angela

HOSPICE CARE WEEK

Hospice Care Week is an annual week of activity which helps change people’s perceptions and raise the profile of hospice care across the UK. This year it takes place over the week of 9-15 October. St Barnabas House, your local hospice, provides specialist palliative care to adults with life-limiting illnesses, both within the hospice and in the comfort of patient’s own homes across the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. There are many different ways you can support St Barnabas House during Hospice Care Week. The week will kick-start with the annual South Downs Trek challenge event on Saturday 7 October. You could help to raise vital funds for the hospice by taking part and raising sponsorship. If trekking or running isn’t your thing, perhaps you could hold a fundraising event, or register to hold a Big Get Together with your family and friends. You could volunteer at an event, pledge to volunteer at the hospice, visit a St Barnabas charity shop, or even make a donation which would contribute to the £6.1 million cost of providing the hospice’s vital services for local people. The simplest way to get involved in Hospice Care Week and help raise awareness of hospice care is by joining in with the conversation on social media. ‘We are hospice care’ is the theme for this year’s Hospice Care Week and St Barnabas House will be using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to show the many faces of hospice care and share some of the inspiring stories of the variety of people involved in it. You can join in by tweeting @StBarnabasHouse using the hashtag #WeAreHospiceCare, or by visiting the St Barnabas House Facebook or Instagram page. You can find out more about Hospice Care Week and all the different ways in which you can get involved at www.stbh.org.uk/hospicecareweek

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Invest in your future with a financial review

O

UR MODERN LIFESTYLE is so busy, it is hard to find time to get the essentials done, never mind deal with anything in the background. Many people do what is most urgent and the rest gets left by the wayside. There always seems to be a shortage of time. Most of us dream that at some point in our lives we will be able to slow down. We hope to be financially secure enough to work less hours, or to give up work altogether. When we are younger we see this as being a long way off, but fast forward to your 40s or 50s and it all seems a lot more imminent. We all dream of freedom and time, but do we look after our finances now to achieve this?

“Ensuring your savings and pensions are invested in the most appropriate way can have a huge impact on your future finances. It is important to stay on track.” After possibly a very busy summer many people are now getting back to normal. Many have started looking at neglected finances. It always seems busy this time of year as people take stock and try to get back on track. This can mean paying off credit cards, or looking at your mortgage. Taking it one step further, is it time for a proper review of all your finances? Ensuring your savings and pensions are invested in the most appropriate way can have a huge impact on your future finances. It is important to stay on track. A full review may seem daunting, most people have gathered several financial products over time but forget the details as time goes on. Many don’t have a proper relationship with an independent adviser and don’t know who to call to get clarification. Even though so much information is available online nowadays, it can be very difficult to get an overall view of your situation. So much money is wasted each year on products which are no longer the most appropriate for peoples changing circumstances. People pay for cover they may no longer need, or pay into pensions and investments which may not performing as well as they could. The financial world has moved 6

on greatly over the last few years, we now have systems where we can proactively manage people’s investments with regular reviews where we can effectively monitor performance and risk levels and access the country’s top fund managers. If you would like an independent assessment of your finances please call me Claire Cook on 01403 330882. We offer independent advice and a free initial consultation. Peter Cushing

A

HOUSEHOLD NAME with a strong Shoreham connection is actor Peter Cushing. Born Peter Wilton Cushing in Kenley, Surrey on May 26th, 1913, his father George Cushing was a quantity surveyor. Peter Cushing attended Shoreham Grammar School in Kingston Lane, Shoreham. He then worked as a clerk in a surveyor’s office, before taking up a scholarship to study for a career as an actor under Cairn James at the Guildhall School Of Music and Drama in London. Cushing made his stage debut in 1935 and worked for a time in the repertory company at Worthing’s Connaught Theatre, during the tenure of director Bill Fraser. He appeared in a number of plays there and later returned to the Connaught as an established name in 1952 to star in a play that also had Irene Handl in its cast. In 1939 Peter Cushing went to America where he featured in plays on New York’s Broadway and subsequently gained his first parts in Hollywood, including a small role in ‘The Man In The Iron Mask’ directed by James Whale. In 1940 he played a student in the Laurel and Hardy film ‘A Chump At Oxford’ before starring alongside Carole Lombard in ‘Vigil In The Night’ that same year. He made one more film in L.A. ‘They Dare Not Love’ before returning to the stage in England. During the Second World War Peter Cushing served with the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) and in 1943 he married Violet Helene Beck. In 1948 he was offered the role of Osric in Laurence Olivier’s film ‘Hamlet’, alongside Jean Simmons as Orphelia and Stanley Holloway as the gravedigger. Interesting Cushing’s future Hammer Horror co-star Christopher Lee also had a non-speaking role in this film. In the 1950s, Peter Cushing became a TV Star when the BBC produced George Orwell’s ‘1984’, in which he played the lead role of Winston Smith. Also for TV, he played Mr Darcy in ‘Pride And Prejudice’ in 1952. He also appeared in an episode of ‘Space 1999’ and ‘The Avengers’. Other TV roles include ‘The Escape Of Rudolf Hess’ and ‘Tales Of The Unexpected’. In 1956 he received a BAFTA for best TV actor. He also appeared in some more movies during this period including ‘Moulin Rouge’ with Zsa Zsa Gabor. It wasn’t until 1957 however that Peter Cushing was first cast as Baron Frankenstein in Hammer Films’‘The Curse Of Frankenstein’. This was to become the first of nineteen films he would make for Hammer. He played Van Helsing in ‘Horror

Of Dracula’ in 1958, opposite Christopher Lee and in 1959 he played Sherlock Holmes for the first time in an acclaimed adaptation of ‘The Hound Of The Baskervilles’. Cushing would play both Baron Frankenstein and Sherlock Holmes again in future films, but admitted to feeling slightly typecast by these roles. He also played Sherlock Holmes in a BBC TV series made in 1968, but sadly only 16 episodes survive. He returned to the role of the famous detective again in 1984, portraying Holmes in old age for Channel 4’s ‘The Masks Of Death’. In the 1960s, Cushing played Dr Who in two films ‘Dr Who And The Daleks’ and ‘Daleks — Invasion Earth: 2150A.D’. He also made cameo appearances in ‘The Morecambe And Wise Show’ where a running joke involved him regularly badgering the comedians for the five pounds they should have paid him for his first appearance. In 1977, Peter Cushing found a new, younger audience when he played Grand Moff Tarkin in George Lucas’s ‘Star Wars’. In later years, Cushing wrote two autobiographies – ‘An Autobiography’ and ‘Past Forgetting’. He was made an OBE in 1989 and a year later featured as the star of ‘This Is Your Life’. In later years he retired to his seafront home in Whitstable, Kent and continued his life long passions of bird watching and watercolour painting. An animal lover, he was a patron of the Vegetarian Society. He died on August 11th 1994 aged 81. In the recent Star Wars movie ‘Rogue One’ in 2016, Cushing was recreated by special effects, which has raised moral questions over the ethics of recreating a deceased actor by CGI. Judy Upton

Making way to colder months

W

ELL HERE WE are in October! The summer seems to have shot by and we are hurtling into the darker colder months. Still there is always the promise of those dry crisp days, even if we are getting shorter evenings. It is noticeable in the garden that things are definitely starting to wind down now On the subject of holidays, it’s at this time of year that many of us have been away for a glorious few weeks, only to return home to see the garden looking like a jungle, with weeds the

size of triffids and all the plants that looked in such good condition looking distraught, despite the best efforts of the neighbour or the in laws, who were certain that they watered the garden regularly, when really they did it on the day before you come back because they kept thinking it would rain overnight so there’s was no need to pop around and do it. It can be very disconcerting, so it’s best to get stuck in and deal with things in order, to get back on top of it. If the plants are struggling then give them a good drink and pop some liquid feed in to give them a boost and help perk them up. I always go for the weeds next. It’s amazing how large they do grow and getting them gone before they go to seed is vital, to stop them reappearing. Just taking the weeds out makes an enormous difference to the look of the garden. Next on the list is dead heading the flowers and getting rid of anything that has died. Most flowering plants will bounce back very well from deadheading and give an even better display After all that’s dealt with, give lawn a cut and edge it. It makes an instant impact and it also cuts down on the weeds in the lawn. Again, whilst you are at it, give the lawn a liquid feed. It will have taken a battering over the summer so a boost will really help perk it up and get it looking better. Do make sure you read the instructions on any lawn feed very carefully and follow them, and if it says water the lawn after applying, don’t be like the in laws and hope it will rain, do it! I get to see quite a few lawns where they have been burnt by the nitrogen in the feed, because it wasn’t watered in as per the instructions and once it’s done, it’s not going to grow back! That should pretty much have got things back on track in the garden and hopefully you won’t be resigning yourself to never going on holiday again because of the garden. It sounds daft but I have heard that muttered on more than one occasion. As wonderful as a garden is, they will pretty much look after themselves with some interference from us. They are there to be enjoyed and not to become a burden. So please before you rush out and sort the garden out, at least unpack your suitcases and give the neighbour or the in-laws their stuffed Spanish donkey as a thankyou present for looking after the garden in your absence! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Exciting future for Adur Outdoor Activity Centre

T

HE FUTURE OF a popular outdoor activity centre has been secured as a new operator with exciting plans prepares to take over the Shoreham site. Adur District Council has awarded a 15year lease on the Adur Outdoor Activity Centre (AOAC) to a partnership of two organisations - leading education charity United Learning and outdoor education specialists Adventure Lifesigns. The move brings to an end nearly two years of uncertainty over the site after the centre closed when the previous operators went into voluntary liquidation. The centre, on the banks of the River Adur, will undergo re-decoration before reopening to schools and the wider community next year with activities such as climbing and water-sports. A longer term refurbishment plan will also begin to support the sustainability of this facility, and the partnership will review opportunities to introduce facilities such as: • Outdoor artificial caving system • High ropes • Shooting range • Camping • Diving centre Adventure Lifesigns and United Learning will be providing exciting opportunities to many schools across our area and beyond, whilst 12

also meeting the needs of our local communities, as was highlighted in the Community Consultation in 2016. The activities most wanted were: • Climbing • Kayaking/Canoeing, and • Paddle Boarding The times these were most wanted were in the school holiday and at weekends. The centre will be open for community use during the school holidays. Courses leading to qualifications will also be available in subjects such as climbing, navigation, diving, life-saving, first aid and canoeing. The AOAC closed in late 2015 and Adur District Council, which owns the land on which the centre sits, has remained committed to finding new operators for it. The Council carried out a public consultation to find out what facilities the community would like to see at the centre and residents’ views helped to influence the decision-making process in awarding the new lease. Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment said; “I am really pleased we have concluded this deal for this muchloved facility. The AOAC brings together two great opportunities for the people of the district. “It enables them to see close up the wonderful natural environment we have

here and of course to live active lifestyles.” “I am sure it will soon once again be a fantastic community asset for Shoreham.” Councillor David Simmons, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “It’s brilliant news that this vital community hub is to re-open.” “Shoreham is already a thriving place for outdoor activities, whether it’s cycling on the Downs link, walking on the downs or taking part in watersports on the river.” “Once open, I believe AOAC will become a hub for all these activities, going a long way to improve the health and wellbeing of thousands of people in the district and the wider region.” Jon Coles, Chief Executive of United Learning which operates Shoreham Academy and a number of other schools in West Sussex said: “We are pleased to be able to secure the future of the AOAC and ensure that generations of young people in the area and beyond will be able to benefit from its wide range of outdoor activities and training delivered by experts at the centre. We are also very aware of the enthusiasm across the community for everything it has to offer and are therefore very keen that we maximise its wider use during evenings and weekends.” Al Cole, Chief Executive of Adventure Lifesigns said: “We are excited to be moving forward with this unique opportunity for Shoreham and the wider community. Our partnership with United Learning will bring together the best of our organisations and inject a new lease of life into the centre”.

Golfer’s Elbow This month Louis Jones will be talking about the painful condition known as Golfers Elbow, which golfers in particular and other racquet sports players can suffer with. What is Golfer’s Elbow?

Golfer’s elbow, or its correct term Medial Epicondylitis, is an inflammation in the tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm to this inner side of the elbow.

What causes Golfer’s Elbow?

Sports, such as racquet sports, golf, and even weight lifting, can cause symptoms of golfer’s elbow, where the stress of

gripping and hitting an object or resisting a heavy object, overstrains the tendons at the point of their insertion at the inside of the elbow.

What are the symptoms for Golfer’s Elbow?

Symptoms include: • Localised pain into the bony point at the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle). • Pain on gripping with the palm up, lifting weights, or carrying heavy bags. • Pain on stretching the elbow, with the elbow straight and the wrist extended with fingers pointing backwards. • Pain on activities where you swing through striking an object such as a forehand in tennis, golf swing or a bicep curl against resistance. • Pain on pressure or palpation to the inside of the elbow. • Swelling (not that common) and bruising (very rare).

What can we do to help overcome Golfer’s Elbow?

• Firstly you should apply ice to the affected area of the elbow for 10 minutes. This would normally happen 2 -3 times in the first 48 hours. • Massaging anti-inflammatory gel into the area can greatly benefit you. • Light stretching of the elbow with the elbow straight and pointing fingers away. • Tennis/Golfer’s elbow straps can alleviate pressure and tension off of the tendons that insert into the elbow. • Acupuncture can be great for curing chronic golfer’s elbow complaints. • Physiotherapy treatment is very effective for curing Golfer’s Elbow. • Changing grips on tennis racquets and golf clubs. • Reducing the amount of strenuous activity, and even resting the area can allow for adequate recovery. Radio Station achieve 45 years of Broadcasting

S

EASIDE HOSPITAL RADIO (formerly Radio Southlands) which broadcasts to the patients, staff and visitors of Worthing and Southlands hospitals celebrates fortyfive years on air. It was on September 24th 1972 that the wards and corridors of Southlands Hospital, Shoreham were filled with the sound of Dean Martin singing “Gentle on My Mind”, the first song the station played. The station was originally located in a disused butchery store within the hospital grounds and this was converted into a studio where disc jockeys, as they were known then, could start practising with the equipment. In the early days broadcasting was limited to Sunday, Monday and Tuesday but as membership grew, within eighteen months, it was extended to six days a week and now Seaside Hospital Radio broadcasts twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. In the spring of 1980 the station moved from the butchery store to the ground floor of the newly constructed

block of Southlands Hospital and the new studios were opened by Alan “Fluff” Freeman of BBC Radio One and Capital Radio. In 1983 a fifty hour broadcast marathon took place to raise money to upgrade equipment in studio 1 and on November 7th 1984 the refurbished studio was opened by Meridian TV presenter Fred Dinenage who became the station’s Vice President, a post which he held for nearly twenty years. By 1985 it was time for the ageing equipment in studio 2 to be replaced and another marathon broadcast was undertaken but it would be a further two years before sufficient funds would be raised. On February 28th 1987 Radio One DJ (and ex Radio Southlands member) Simon Mayo opened the refurbished studio 2. On March 15th 2004 Radio Southlands officially changes its name to Seaside Hospital Radio and on April 1st that same year it took over responsibility for supplying the radio broadcast service for Worthing Hospital from Coastway Hospital Radio. It was on May 15th 2004

that the last record was played on Radio Southlands. Dave Field who has been a presenter with Seaside Hospital Radio for forty-three years and is President of the station said “I have enjoyed my forty-three years with Seaside Hospital Radio. I initially replied to an article in the Herald all those years ago saying “new blood wanted for hospital radio” and I hope I have made a difference to the lives of patients during their stay in hospital. I have also made many friendships over the years with my fellow presenters.” Dave would recommend anyone interested in broadcasting to consider joining the team. Like all stations, Seaside Hospital Radio has its famous alumni, including Simon Mayo, Bob James, Tim Humphrey, Ambrose Harcourt, David Stanford and Adam James. Could you be next? It’s a good way to learn about broadcasting and participate in the community and hospital life, and it’s fun. You can contact and listen to Seaside Hospital Radio by logging onto their website www.seasidehr.com

Holiday homes for your friend!

Dog Lovers Wanted: “Pleeease can I come and stay?”

While owners are away you will give their dogs love exercise and companionship within your family home.

A business has launched in the BN postcode area offering dog owners a home based alternative to kennels. Run by Emily Deacon and her West Highland Terrier Barkley, Wagging Tails gives dogs their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of an especially selected dog Carer. All Wagging Tails Carers are experienced current or former dog owners, are at home during the day, have their own secure garden and no children under 6; have been licenced by their local council and are fully insured. Emily, a former Teaching Assistant, has been a dog lover for many years and having welcomed Barkley into her family fully understand the difficulty fellow dog owners have when leaving their dogs to go on holiday. Wagging Tails provides a much needed service for local dog owners, allowing them to go away on holiday or business and have peace of mind that their dogs are being well cared for in a real ‘home from home’ environment. The role of Carer is also a great opportunity for dog lovers who aren’t in a position to commit to owning a dog, to enjoy the companionship of friendly guest dogs staying with them for a holiday. Emily is looking for potential Dog Carers who would like to welcome dogs into their homes for a holiday. Many Wagging Tails Carers describe the role being much like that of a Grandparent — all the fun and then you give them back and look forward to the next visit.

If you are at home all day, have no children under the age of six, have no more than one dog of your own and would like to enjoy the company of guest dogs please get in touch. AWARD WINNING HOME DOG BOARDING

Mental Health and You Tuesday 10th October is World Mental Health Awareness Day. Here registered hypnotherapist Melanie Maelo of the Shoreham Osteopathy Centre explores some of the reasons behind poor mental health, as well as how and where to seek help.

M

ENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS are on the increase in the UK. Statistics show that one in four adults and one in ten children will experience a mental health problem in any given year, leading to a potentially profound impact on their lives — yet many will not seek help. So why not? Sadly an ill-informed and damaging attitude towards mental health still exists among some people that can make it difficult for some to seek help. This stigma causes people to feel afraid to admit that they are struggling. It is estimated that only about a quarter of people with a mental health problem in the UK receive ongoing help and treatment. We need to be more aware as a community and be a part of changing the stigma surrounding mental health, enabling people to get the help they need.

What is poor mental health?

Mental health problems range from the worries we all experience as part of everyday life to serious long-term conditions. We all experience low moods, anger, stress, anxiety, trauma and grief to some degree over our lifetime, however, these things become a problem when they become ongoing and/or excessive. Mental health problems can start from very early on in childhood and if unchecked can result in severe mental health problems in adulthood. Some people experience trauma (real or perceived) and go on to develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Numerous women develop mental illness during pregnancy and within the first year after having a baby. For others their physical health may become severely impaired or they may experience long-term chronic illness or pain resulting in grief, depression and anxiety. The initial causes of poor mental health are myriad and as individuals we all respond and cope with mental health problems differently.

Help!

When you are experiencing a mental health problem, access to support and reliable information can change your life, so it’s important to know where you can go for support. Communicating how you are feeling is your first step. This may initially be with family, friends or both. Some may feel more comfortable going directly to their GP, minister or school counsellor. A good place to start is your local GP. Many GPs are used to dealing with depression and other mental health issues. Some take a special interest and undertake additional training in the area. Your GP may conduct an initial general check-up to identify whether there are any physical causes to your symptoms. He or she can then help with signposting you to the relevant help. Other people seek help through various other channels i.e. church counsellors, telephone counselling, online group forums, psychotherapy, holistic and alternative therapies such as hypnotherapy, osteopathy, EFT etc. Most importantly DON’T BE SCARED TO SHARE. Putting 22

your head in the sand and hoping it will go away is not going to work, and bottling everything up can very quickly lead to selfdestructive behaviour.

What is Good Mental Health?

Good mental health is characterised by a person’s ability to fulfil a number of key functions and activities. These can include: • Feeling, expressing and managing a range of positive and negative emotions • The ability to form and maintain good, healthy relationships with others • Feeling engaged with the world around you • Living and working productively • Adapting and managing in times of uncertainty • Coping with the general stresses of everyday life • Feeling confident in yourself with positive self-esteem The Shoreham Osteopathy Centre supports World Mental Health Awareness Day. FOOTWEAR

Karen Burrett and Gaynor Platt, our podiatrists at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea discuss the common problem of verrucae. This month Karen the podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea, talk about the importance of Footwear. Footwear is a common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called “If the shoe fits, wear it” found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few people get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of both men’s and women’s appearance and the sort of shoes that are “acceptable” changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. QUICK TIPS TO REMEMBER WHEN SHOE SHOPPING: Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes; Feet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest; Buy the right shoe for the purpose; If you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles/ orthotics; Buying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly; and ensure they fit correctly. Contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk

Five tips for glowing skin As autumn arrives we enter the metal element which in traditional Chinese medicine theory, this connects with the lung, skin and colon giving a greater focus on elimination, renewal and our boundaries. Five ways we can nourish these elements and promote good health and vibrant skin. 1. Body brushing which helps to stimulate our skin, helps the lymphatic and blood circulation and detoxifies the body. Pick a soft bristle body brush and use gentle strokes from feet working upwards. Also look at including gentle natural facial exfoliation with a good quality product without eco damaging plastic microbeads! Or use a cleansing balm and flannel or muslin cloth and include a clay mask once or twice a week. 2. Get some exercise In Nature, a short yet brisk walk in the local park or at the beach will be good for the senses, aim for 20mims, take deep breaths of fresh air and get the blood pumping. 3. Applying a body and facial oil and taking the time to really nourish and massage into the skin, allowing for the nutrients to be absorbed and it gives

self care and love to the body and mind which always produces a healthy glow! 4. Take a more nourishing approach with your diet, warm foods, soups and stews are easier to digest and go along way to help support our digestion therefore our health. Include white coloured foods such as mushroom, almonds, cauliflower, white radish, white coloured fish and meat, some pungent spices, plus good quality protein in the form of tofu, beans or

quality white meat or fish, this helps to nourish the lung and support our immunity and overall vitality, helping our outer glow. 5 Create a tidy and organised environment, this may seem a strange one yet this helps create a happy mind and body and specifically clear boundaries which can reflect on the health of our lungs, skin and colon. It’s a great time to have a clear out, add more elements of beauty to our environment to create a pleasing home to cosy into during the colder months.

Jasper’s Countdown to Christmas Although members of Adur East Lions Club have not been idle since the Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally back in June, they are now gearing up for the busiest time of year. Not only are there a number of planned events in the next couple of months but this is followed by that busiest of times — CHRISTMAS! This is a time of year when they really need the help of their ‘Friends of Lions’. In date order the events are: Lions Awareness coffee morning — come along to Shoreham Methodist Church Hall on Saturday 14 October to browse a number of stalls manned by a variety of small charities within the area. The Lions themselves will have a book stall, Christmas stall and cake stall where you can buy your cake to have with the tea and coffee provided in the back of the Hall. You can also find out more about the Lions and how they support the local community. Lions Quiz — This twice-yearly event raises funds for the Lions administration account which keeps the club running and means that they can guarantee that every penny donated goes back out in charitable donations or service projects. The quiz will be held at Eastbrook Manor 28

Community Centre (formerly known as the Fishersgate Centre) at 7pm on 28 October. Fish and chips is included in the ticket price of £9 and you can bring your own drinks although tea and coffee will be available. Teams of no more than 6. Please contact club secretary Colin Burt on 01273 592213 Tea and Tinsel — You are probably familiar with the Turkey and Tinsel coach tours that proliferate from October to November, well the Lions provide a free Tea and Tinsel for anyone elderly who lives on their own. This includes mulled wine (non-alcoholic!), a tea with a seasonal twist, entertainment and a visit from Santa. This year’s Tea and Tinsel will be held on Saturday 11 November at Southwick Methodist Church Hall. If you know somebody who would appreciate an invite then please get in touch and an invitation will be sent.

Christmas — Mention Christmas to any Lion and they will say ‘Hard work but so rewarding’. The approach of the festive season means preparing the sleigh to go out onto the streets of Southwick with Santa and his many helpers, manning the grotto at the Mayberry Garden Centre with Santa and elves, collecting at Christmas events in Shoreham and Southwick town centres (9 and 16 December respectively). All of these events will need Lion-power and although there are now 26 members they can be spread pretty thin during this period. If you think you would make a good Santa stand-in or have always wanted to be an elf, please get in touch. You can do this by ringing 08458337356, messaging via facebook — www. facebook.com/adureastlionsclub or visiting the website www.adureastlions. org.uk.
