SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

NOVEMBER 2015

Editor’s comment Welcome to the November issue of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. At this time of year we have the fantastic yearly Shoreham Beach Bonfire and of course local firework displays in around Sussex. It should be incredible fun for all. I read recently that Adur and Worthing launched their Eat Out Eat Well Initiative. There are infact quite a few local places in Shoreham who have been given this special award. You can read more about it on page four. In the run up to Christmas there are a number of Fayre’s listed where you can get lots of goodies! This month Showtime Productions have given three pairs of tickets which can be won to see Jack and the Beanstalk family pantomime at the Windmill Theatre in December – read next month’s issue in how to enter. This is in support of the Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice care. We hope that you will enjoy reading this months issue, We have our wonderful contributors as well as latest news of what’s been happening in the area. We also have another crossword in this months issue kindly supplied by Gordon Guest. If you would like to publicise a local activity for December, please send copy by the 12th of November. Warm regards Angela

Shoreham Bonfire, Eat Out, Eat Well Fireworks and…Samba? in Adur & Worthing Shoreham Bonfire Society, who organise the community run and community funded Beach Bonfire and Fireworks night on Shoreham Beach, hope that the 2015 Shoreham Bonfire and Fireworks event on Saturday, 7th November will be the best yet. Here is what to expect: A Samba Procession which will feature the Beach Bateria Samba Band and be led by local boy Charlie Ferrier; A large beach bonfire on Shoreham Beach; an excellent and professionally managed fireworks display; children’s face painting, children’s ride, Heart FM Angels as well as a selection of food and drink; the fireworks will be followed by live performances by local young musicians from the Shoreham Allstars; for the first time a guaranteed minimum of 10% of the money collected on the night will go to local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House; and 3rd Shoreham Sea Scouts will be assisting with this year’s bucket collection. The processions leaves Beach Green at 6.30pm. The Bonfire will be lit by 7pm and the Fireworks will be at 7.15pm. Jonathan Marshall of Shoreham Bonfire comments: “After the disappointment of last year, when strong inland winds prevented the event going ahead, we are delighted to be back again this and looking forward to being able to raise money for a great local charity like Chestnut Tree House. We are thankful to the community for supporting the event each year and hope that they will give generously again so that we can give more to the charity.” Website: www.shorehambonfire.co.uk

Wildlife Hit Squad needs you

Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Saturday Conservation Hit Squad needs volunteers (aged 16+) to help keep their nature reserves in tip top shape. It’s good fun, good exercise and good for the wildlife of Sussex. No experience is needed and tools are provided, you just need to bring lunch and drinks for the day. The Hit Squad travels to beautiful locations across Sussex, meeting at Woods Mill, Henfield at 9am for a lift, returning around 4pm, or meet them at a reserve near you. It’s a great way to meet new friends with an interest in wildlife; some people come along every week, others once or twice a month. To find out more please call Liz Francis on 01273 497562 or email lizfrancis@sussexwt.org.uk 4

Last month Adur & Worthing Councils launched their Eat Out Eat Well initiative for 2015 Current Gold standard Eat Out Eat Well certificate holders, The Ropetackle Cafe in Shoreham-bySea, played host. Councillor David Simmons, Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing at Adur District Council, welcomed current Eat Out Eat Well catering businesses, including Reflections Nursery & Forest School, Discovery Day Nursery both in Worthing and in Shoreham-by-Sea, Frank’s Kitchen and Artisan Cafe. Councillor Simmons was followed by speeches on the importance of the scheme by Councillor Val Turner, Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing at Worthing Borough Council and Wendy Anderson, Senior Environmental Health Officer for Adur & Worthing Councils. Since its successful launch in 2014, the Eat Out Eat Well in Sussex campaign has awarded 18 Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates to restaurants, cafes and private catering businesses all over the Adur and Worthing district. These businesses have shown a strong commitment to offering their diners, clients and customers delicious, healthier dishes when eating out. Cllr David Simmons, Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing at Adur District Council adds: “The Ropetackle Cafe is a perfect example of what the Eat Out Eat Well campaign is trying to achieve. The Cafe is a successful catering business that serves delicious, fresh food and has consistently demonstrated its commitment to offering healthy options, using locally sourced and ethical ingredients. The fact that this Cafe is also solely run by volunteers also deserves special mention.” Councillor Val Turner, Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing at Worthing Borough Council adds: “Since Eat Out Eat Well in Sussex launched in 2014, 18 businesses across the district (12 in Worthing and 6 in Adur) have signed up to this important initiative. Our Environmental Health team have worked very closely with the catering businesses across the district in awarding and maintaining Eat Out Eat Well Gold, Silver and Bronze standards. We hope this event encourages more businesses in our area to sign up to the scheme, that would support and award them in offering their customers healthier options, when eating out.”

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Going green with your investments

W

E ARE ALL being made aware of the impact we are having on the world. Many are happily now recycling and some donate money to charities to help nature and the environment and as a nation we are concerned with global warming. Many people take this concern one step further by literally investing for the future of our planet; often known as ethical or green investment. Many of us have money in a personal pension, a bond, ISA or unit trust. The money will be invested in funds, managed by fund managers. The money will be pooled with that of other investors and used to by assets which should hopefully make your money grow. Normally, this will include shares in companies, in the UK and sometimes abroad. But do you know where your money is invested? The companies in your investment funds could be dealing in gas, oil, arms, tobacco or pharmaceuticals; in essence you could be supporting companies which are going against your moral beliefs. It is always difficult to dig below the surface and find out, and it is even more difficult if you want to avoid investment into certain companies or areas of investments, especially as the investment will be changing as time goes on.

How to access the funds

Depending which provider you have your investment with, they may have ethical funds available. If you have taken no advice for some time, a full review would be advisable, you should contact an Independent Financial Adviser who can contact your current providers and get all of the relevant information, then advising you on the best course of action. For independent advice on any of the above please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. How do the funds invest?

There are two main ways: Negative screening — the fund manager would avoid investments in companies whose activities are deemed to be negative. This process is used by most UK ethical fund managers; and Positive screening — the fund manager would invest in companies who are involved in projects with a positive social or environmental impact, things such as waste management or renewable energy. The manager would literally screen in companies who are doing good in the world. These funds are often known as green funds. 6

Winter is looming B Y THE TIME you read this we will have gone through the ritual of the clocks changing, bringing the darker evenings and it really does make it seem like winter is well on its way, with bonfire night and Christmas soon approaching. There is still some time to go until we reach the worst of the winter weather, so there is still plenty of time to make the most of the odd day in the garden. One good Sunday, or a couple of mornings, can lead to so much getting done and the garden being in a much better position to take the brunt of the worst of the weather One of the key things with the approach of winter is to make the most of what you already have, so I always think it’s a good

10

time to look around and see what needs sorting out or mending now, to save further problems. Check your fences, shed roofs, and any other structures in the garden. If they need repairing now, then get it done rather than waiting for winter gales to make a small job bigger. Check over large shrubs and trees. If you’re worried about dead branches or ones that could get affected by high winds or heavy snow, then do some pruning or if it’s too big a job, get an expert in. There is nothing worse than seeing a beloved tree damaged by winter storms and having to see it taken away completely. It’s surprising how big a hole they leave in a garden when they are gone, and in more ways than one These days most items of equipment in the garden aren’t cheap. So a few minutes taking care of them now saves more expense later on. Get tools put away in the shed. One thing that is always forgotten is to put the hose pipe away. Frost or freezing temperatures will soon damage a hose pipe. Irrigation systems also need to be drained down. If you have any timers on your taps then get them taken indoors and don’t forget to take the batteries out. On the plus side with the colder temperatures at this time of year is the fact that so many plants become dormant. It’s a great time to move plants, or even better to divide them to get twice the plant for no more money. Any plant you are going to move or divide, follows the same simple process. Dig the plant out carefully, getting as much of a rootball out of possible. Sometimes that means using two people, a much better idea than a bad back! Once it is out you can divide it by simply cutting the rootball in half with a sharp spade, or even an old handsaw. The plant should then be placed into a new hole, which has had some extra compost added in. Once you’ve got the plant in the hole and filled in around it, make sure you compress the soil with the heel, to get rid of any air pockets. Then give it a good water and finally give the plant a good prune back. That will allow the plant to concentrate on growing its roots and establish itself. By the spring you will have a new plant in a new position for free. It really is as easy as that. Finally as we go into winter, spare a thought for the creatures that make the garden such a wonderful place to be, and leave some piles of leaves and other areas of cover for them, as well as the odd titbit for the birds. I really do love the garden in the winter. It’s a great place to work, with so much to see from a completely different viewpoint to the summer, especially on a frosty day. There’s no better place to stand with a cup of tea! Mark Oakley, Any Garden To advertise call: 01273 452065

5 Reasons to have Sports Massage Local sports physio, Louis Jones, says massage is an ancient technique used to help heal and cure pain and disease. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’s emblem has two hands representing the essence of what Physiotherapy is all about. The hands are an invaluable tool, in being able to feel, and diagnose injury, and treat pain. What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a deep tissue massage aimed at loosening tight muscles and maintaining optimal performance. It can help sportspeople recover more quickly from injury and prevent them from getting injured.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

14

What are the benefits of sports massage?

1. It’s hands on. The best way to build rapport with a patient is to be hands on. The improvement that you can feel through massage will build trust and confidence in the therapist. Massage can feel great and the benefits can be immediate, if done correctly. 2. It can mobilise fluid/swelling. With acute injuries, such as ankle or knee sprains, massage can help assist with reducing swelling, helping an injury to heel more quickly and become less painful. When an injury occurs, the lymphatic system that deals with the movement of swelling can be traumatised, which in turn can cause it to become sluggish. Swelling can cause soft tissue stretching and pain. Massage helps to move the swelling and stimulate the lymphatic system to activate. 3. It increases circulation. Massage creates warmth, which helps stimulate circulation so that healing can take place. The nutrients in cells of the blood can help fight inflammation and speed healing up. 4. It breaks down adhesions and scar tissue. Overworked muscles can become damaged over time, causing scar tissue and knots where muscle fibres adhere or stick to one another. Massage is a great way to loosen tight, tired muscles and improve the overall function of them, so that they can work optimally. 5. It improves recovery time. Massage can reduce the time it takes to recovery from intense sport or activity, by doing all of the above. One of the benefits of massage is to prevent injury, by maintaining healthy muscles and keeping joints more mobile, reducing the risk of strains, stiffness and injury, also meaning that you can train harder more quickly. If you take your sport seriously and you want to take steps to avoid injury or take your fitness to the next level, then let sports massage help you to achieve that goal. “What if Christmas, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps… means a little bit more!” Dr Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Just like the Grinch we at Steyning Arts believe that Christmas shouldn’t be about mass produced gifts from a store so we are hosting an artist and makers fair filled with unique gifts, greeting cards and decorations. We believe Christmas time is about giving chances, so we are offering local artists the chance to showcase and sell their hand crafted art works. We know that everyone likes and deserves something different so our artists will be offering Photography, Jewellery, Painting, Stained glass, Wood craft, Textiles and Ceramics. We understand that gifts from the heart do not have to cost the earth which is why we have asked artists to produce pieces suited to all budgets with prices ranging from two to two hundred pounds. We believe Christmas is a great time for “..a little bit more” so we will be supporting “Your Space Your Time” with proceeds from the sale of refreshments. And because we all dislike paying for car parking but love a bit of cake we’ve chosen a venue with a free car park and are offering cake in our café area. The Steyning Arts at Christmas Artist and Makers Fair will be held at the Steyning centre on the 28th November between 10.30 and 4.30pm. From the Steyning Arts team x www.steyningarts.co.uk

Ultimate Ethical Christmas Gifts From Babies with Love has some of the most ethical gifts on offer to parents-to-be and children this Christmas who have assisted over 500 children in 25 countries worldwide.

E

VERY PENNY OF profit is used to help abandoned and orphaned children all over the world. This, combined with the fact, From Babies with Love gifts are all made using GOTS certified organic yarn. Then add to the mix, recycling and upcycling and you’ve got the ultimate ethical gift! With the purchase of these gifts, there’s hope to assist 2,000 vulnerable children within the next 12-months.

The Gifts that Keep Giving… Charity Bear – Young children will adore From Babies with Love Charity Bear (£18.99 RRP). No ordinary bear, this bear has been designed in collaboration with Boots to deliver on an environmental and social level. Suitable from birth, this soft, cuddly, beanie bottomed bear not only brings hours of comfort and joy to its owner, but it’s also considerate to the environment and helps provide much needed care to less fortunate children around the world.

What makes the From Babies With Love Charity Bear special?

100% of profits from every sale are donated to help orphaned and abandoned children worldwide through SOS Children: SOS Children helps build and run children’s villages around the world. The villages provide a safe and loving home, as well as fundamental education and healthcare, to children who have nobody else to turn to; enabling children who would otherwise be left to fend for themselves, on the streets or in slums, to have a second chance in life. NO chemicals, NO dyes & NO pesticides: The bear and bib are 20

made from luxuriously soft, organically grown, natural coloured cotton without the use of chemicals, dyes or pesticides. Recycled: The polyfill stuffing is made from recycled soft drinks bottles to help reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill The From Babies with Love Charity Bear is presented in a beautiful gift box, with a hand-tied bow and From Babies with Love label. It is available to purchase exclusively through Boots (in store & online). Baby Gift Sets — Parents-to-be and new parents alike will adore the From Babies with Love Gift Set. Each gift set comes with a useful baby grow and blanket - ideal for the winter months – complete with peace of mind that somewhere in the world another child is also benefiting from this gift (£49.95 RRP). The four stylish designs, feature charming animal motifs: The Rabbit, The Duck, The Frog and The Monkey, which have been cleverly created using a montage of vintage postage ephemera to unique effect. High quality screen-printing and hand finished applique details complete a premium finish and feel, while the luxuriously soft organic cotton is ideal against baby’s sensitive skin. The Gift Sets are suitable for infants aged 0-3m and 3-6m, and come in an inspired presentation box that includes a kit which can be easily up-cycled to create a fun hanging mobile for the nursery. Rise and Fall of Little Voice F Written by Jim Cartwright and directed by Tony Bright.

OLLOWING THE DEATH of her father, the painfully shy Little Voice (LV) withdraws into the world she shared with him, a world

24

in which the great divas wear their hearts on their sleeves, singing out their emotions. She spends almost all her time in her bedroom listening and

singing along to her father’s collection of records by stars like Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, and Ethel Merman. When local talent agent Ray Say, her mother Mari’s latest boyfriend, overhears LV singing he quickly realises she has star potential and sets about exploiting her talent. Persuaded by the tacky scout, and pushed by an overbearing mother, a nervous LV blasts out pitch perfect renditions of her singing heroines in a local nightclub — but will she ever have the courage to find her own voice? The Rise and Fall of Little Voice: 9 Dec–12 Dec 2015 at 7.30pm. The Barn Theatre (housed at Southwick Community Centre), Southwick Street, Southwick BN42 4TE. Tickets £11. Update from QS Howlett Clarke As we welcome the beginning of autumn, October is the month at which Howlett Clarke reaches its peak with charity and local community events, and this year has been no different! The period began slightly earlier this year with our Jeans for Gene’s day followed shortly by the Macmillan Coffee Morning; both days provided us with cake, casual clothes and fundraising. We have some brilliant partnerships also running this October, we have teamed up with Bernardo’s in which you can receive a free Will (standard T&C’s apply) and all that is asked for in return is the consideration of leaving a gift in your Will to

Barnardo’s. To see if you’re eligible, you can get in touch with us using the contact details below. Lastly, to finish October off with a bang we have our Wear it Pink, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, which should be great fun! At Howlett Clarke we are passionate about what we do and as your local law firm we pride ourselves on providing a friendly yet professional approach. Law can often seem as complex and we will always work to put it all into context for you, keeping in regular contact and helping you move forward.
