CHRISTMAS ARTS AND CRAFTS

A THRILLER FOR THE LOCALS

Steyning Arts will be presenting their Christmas event at the Steyning Centre, on December 3rd from 10am to 4.30pm. Now becoming a bit of a tradition, Steyning Arts brings a marvellous array of cards and gifts from locally based artists to suit a range of budgets. Peruse the displays of jewellery, prints and paintings, textiles, woodcraft, ceramics and glass. There is a gift for everybody; the opportunity to buy something unique and special for a loved one. Choose from a range of festive cards, deck your halls with handmade Christmas decorations or plan ahead with a 2017 calendar. Visit the Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning and enjoy the atmosphere. It's a chance to meet the artists but also treat yourself to some light refreshment with net proceeds going to a local good cause.

Residents of Shoreham-by-Sea and the surrounding area with an interest in local history will be interested to read a recently published thriller set in the town. An Element of Time, written by Shoreham resident, Keith Freeman, is set in the Victorian era and reveals some fascinating facts about the town. Keith says. “I have been lucky enough to live in Shoreham for over 40 years and have always been curious about its history. Writing the novel gave me an excuse to investigate its ancient buildings and customs, and provided the perfect setting for a supernatural thriller.” The history of St Mary De Haura church, the tunnels underneath many parts of Shoreham, Lancing College, the Swiss Gardens, the Red Lion and the Burrell Arms all feature prominently in the story. The perfect gift for Christmas, An Element Of Time is an enthralling journey back and forth through history, starting with Queen Victoria mourning the death of her beloved Albert. Becoming convinced that she will be able to communicate with him once again using the mystical powers of the gold given to the infant Christ by the Magi, the story incorporates myth and legend by way of murder, secret societies, séances and the search for true love. Perfect for fans of Dan Brown and Arthur Conan Doyle, or anyone who just enjoys a gripping thriller, the book is available as a paperback from bookshops or as an eBook for Kindle from www.amazon.co.uk or www.smashwords.com.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Investments – what are the risks?

D

ESPITE THE INTEREST rates currently being so low, many people are still investing in building society or bank accounts. At times of change and stockmarket fluctuation cash investments provide security. It is considered a safe home for many people’s money, and a sensible place to keep funds you may need in the short term. It is well known that many other types of investment come with risk which can be off-putting to some people. There are many types of risk which often people get confused. Here, I will explain three of the main types.

"There are many types of risk which often people get confused." At times of low interest rates the interest received on your cash investments may be lower than the rate of inflation. This means that the real value of your capital could reduce over time. The term for this is 'inflation risk'. At the other end of the scale, people could buy shares in a specific company. This can be a much higher risk as you are relying on one specific company’s performance — this is called 'specific risk'. You may invest in a number of different assets, such as investing in a portfolio arranged by a financial adviser. Typically this would spread your investment across a number of different assets according to your level of risk. This could include company shares, property, fixed interest or gilts and cash. By diversifying across a broad range of assets the overall risk level is potentially reduced. This type of investment, however, will be affected by the movements in the overall market — this is called 'systemic risk'. To explain this further if you invest in a broad, well diversified portfolio the value of your investment will vary as the market fluctuates. However, as you are invested in a range of assets your money is more widely spread. This means that if one area reduces in value often a different area will react differently to the market conditions. The different areas of investment have different risk levels, for example the shares in your portfolio will be deemed higher risk, however, the fixed interest or gilts will have a lower risk level. The investment would be set at a risk 6

level you feel comfortable with. Investments of this type should be for funds you do not need to access in the short term. This gives the investment time to ride through market fluctuations. You should always leave sufficient capital in cash for your shorter term needs. If you would like advice on any of the above issues, or need independent financial advice please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. Tom Sayers, Champion of England

O

NE OF THE regular celebrity visitors to Shoreham in the 1800s was the bare-knuckle prize fighter, Tom Sayers. He was born on either the 15th or 25th of May, 1826, in a Brighton alley of a poor area then known as Pimlico, (now Tichborne Street). He was the youngest of the five children of William Sayers, a shoemaker, and his wife Maria. At the age of six, Tom became a Jack in the Water, earning a few coppers by performing small tasks for holidaymakers and fishermen on Brighton beach. At the age of thirteen, Tom Sayers went to London, where he stayed with his sister Eliza and her husband Robert King, a builder. Sayers became a bricklayer, and for the next seven years shuttled between his home town and the capital. He is known to have worked on the London Road viaduct at Brighton. In 1846 he moved to London, living in the Camden area. Prize fighting was illegal, but continued to flourish as an underground activity, and Sayers, having earned a considerable reputation from a number of informal fights, decided to try to make a living with his fists. His first contest as a professional was in March 1849, when he defeated Abe Couch in a bout at Greenhithe, North Kent. There were no formal weight divisions in boxing at the time, and although Sayers was only five feet, eight inches tall and never weighed much more than 150 pounds, he frequently fought much bigger men. In a career which lasted from 1849 until 1860, he lost only one of his sixteen bouts. In 1857 he beat the leading heavyweight boxer of the time, Harry Paulson, at Appledore in Kent. The fight lasted for a gruelling 3 hours and 8 minutes and consisted of 109 rounds. The victory took Tom Sayers’ career to a whole new level. The following year he fought and beat Bill Perry, known as the ‘Tipton Slasher’ in a 10 round fight on North Kent’s Isle Of Grain. Tom Sayers would sometimes train at the Royal Sovereign in Shoreham’s Middle Street. He was often seen about the town wearing his ‘Champion Of England’ belt, enjoying his fame and popularity with the public both here and his in birthplace of Brighton. His portrait was painted several times, and after his humble origins, he liked to be seen strutting around in a top

8

hat. During his career Tom Sayers had 12 wins, 1 loss and 3 draws. Sayers had the fight of his career in 1859 when he faced a challenge from the USA’s champion John Camel Heenan, known as the Benicia Boy. Efforts of a number of concerned citizens to have the illegal event prevented, failed, and the fight was held at Farnborough in Hampshire on the morning of Tuesday, 17th April 1860. Sayers’ right arm was damaged early in the bout, and after that he had to fight on one-handed After more than forty rounds, the brutal fight ended in chaos when Heenan illegally tried to strangle Sayers. The ropes of the ring were cut and the crowd invaded the ring. Finally the local police moved in to put a stop to proceedings. The referee declared a draw and both men were awarded a championship belt. The two boxers toured England, Scotland and Ireland together, becoming firm friends in the process. Sayers was in Heenan’s corner during the American boxer’s next big fight, but offered no help at all, to the other fighter’s fury. It is thought that he had been taken ill, possibly with diabetes. Heenan and Sayers never spoke to each other again. Tom Sayers never fought again as his health was in decline. He was seen as a national hero however, held in affection by many who had seen or held about his pugilism. A public subscription was raised for him, and he received the sum of £3,000, which in those days was enough to fund a comfortable retirement. Luckily this money was safely invested for him as he then made an ill-fated decision to go into the circus business, touring the country staging recreations of his most famous triumphs. He died aged only 39, due to diabetes, TB and heavy drinking, at his home in Camden High Street on the 8th November 1865, and his funeral a week later attracted some 100,000 people to Camden Town. Tom Sayers is buried in Highgate Cemetery, where his tomb is guarded by the stone image of his mastiff, Lion, who was chief mourner at his funeral. The house in Camden where he died now has an English Heritage blue plaque. Judy Upton

A touch of frost W

ELL THE CLOCKS have changed and we are pretty much going headlong into winter now. Still up to this point it has been amazingly dry in the garden, with the last three months having had very little rainfall. It is very noticeable when digging in the garden and when we are laying new lawns we are still advising people to water them. I wonder what the rest of the winter holds? Without doubt November is probably the most important month for preparation in the garden in so many ways. You need

10

to prepare for the bad weather that is coming and also look beyond and prepare for the spring, so there is lots to do and it’s easy to put it off as the days get colder and Christmas looms large and fast on the horizon. By now we are starting to get the first frosts. It’s well worth taking notice of these as they can be one of the quickest and effective ways of losing plants. If you’ve got any vulnerable plants in pots that you want to protect then either move them to the greenhouse, cover them, or at least move them by a sunny wall where they will get the heat off of the wall. Larger less hardy shrubs such as palms can be covered, with fleece and the centers protected with straw. We are fairly lucky on the coast as we are somewhat protected by the downs and the warmer temperature of the sea, so it really is a matter of personal choice as to whether you wrap larger plants or leave them to take their chances. If you do leave them to take their chances, then keep an eye on the forecasts as they can be quickly covered should any sudden cold snaps be looming It’s not just plants that need protection. Drain down hose pipes and get them inside. Make sure the outside tap and pipes are insulated as well. I fell foul of this a few years ago when I came home to find a pipe had been split in the frost. Unfortunately, we had recently gone on to a water meter so I wasn’t best pleased! Plant pots can quickly get spoilt by the frost so give them some protection as well. We often get calls to try to mend pond liners that have spring leaks and this can often be caused by a buildup of ice in the pond. A few balls or half-filled plastic bottles, left floating in the pond will help prevent this. It is also about the planning for next year. From clearing the dead wood and plants away, along with rubbish, to moving and re-siting plants and freeing up space for new planting, there is so much to do. Anything you do now, will have such a good effect for the spring. Any plants you plant or reposition, will benefit from the warmth in the soil that is still there and will be encouraged to grow their roots, giving them a head start on anything you plant in the spring Well that leaves one more article to write for this year, were has it gone. Whilst on the subject of passing time, I noticed from looking back at old articles that I have been writing this column for 7 years. I know form speaking to lots of my clients that they enjoy reading this, so I hope everyone who reads it gets a little something out of it. I for one certainly enjoy doing it Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065

Sports Hernia A sports hernia, or “Gilmore’s Groin” named after the physician who discovered it, Mr. Owen Gilmore, can be very tricky to diagnose, as symptoms may vary from person to person. Louis Jones says they are not to be confused with a conventional hernia, which usually presents as a tearing in the abdominal wall, with a palpable lump. Here are 5 Signs that you may have a Sports Hernia:

1. You have pain in your groin region

One sign that you may have a sports hernia, is if you have pain in your inner thigh or groin region. Having said that sportspeople have suffered with unusual areas of pain that are related to a sports hernia, which do not respond well to conventional physiotherapy treatment.

2. You have difficulty getting in and out of a car

If you are experiencing pain whilst getting in or out of a car, this can be a sign f a sports hernia.

3. When playing sport, your pace noticeably slows after around an hour of exercise

Pain would usually come on immediately with exercise, but with a sports hernia, there is usually no pain, but a noticeable reduction in pace, when attempting to sprint, after about an hour.

4. You have a positive cough reflex or flutter Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

14

If you were to feel around your pubic region, you would notice a feeling when you cough, similar to the vibration or fuzziness you would feel or hear when you blow a party blower. This is known as a flutter, or a positive cough reflex.

5. You have a positive test on Gilmore’s test

The test for Gilmore’s Groin is to lay on your back, with your legs straight and your feet together. Raise your legs straight approximately 6 inches off the floor, and press firmly into your pubic region. A positive test would bring on a painful response.

The treatment for a sports hernia, is usually minor surgery, to repair the damage. The recovery is usually excellent, and with the correct treatment and exercise regime after, you could be back playing sport within 3-4 weeks post surgery. If you are unsure whether you have a sports hernia, it is worth having a physiotherapy assessment to determine a diagnosis and decide on a suitable treatment plan. If think you may be suffering with a sports hernia then call 01273 467614 or email me at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Acupuncture for Anxiety Acupuncture is best known as a treatment for helping our aches and pains but it can also be used to treat anxiety and depression. In her local clinic, Leona Andersson frequently hears her patients say they feel overwhelmed with the stresses and strains of daily life, people are often so busy juggling too many things.

M

OST OF US are familiar with the feeling of being anxious, ranging from mild anxiety to full blown panic attacks. It can cause a multitude of emotional and physical symptoms including panic or fear, worry, poor concentration, problems sleeping, shortness of breath, palpitations, restlessness, muscle tension and dizziness. Additionally, existing medical conditions can become worse with stress. Conventional treatments used for anxiety disorders include psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy and applied relaxation, and medication such as antidepressants. Acupuncture can safely be used alongside any of these treatments, or on its own.

How can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture can help to alleviate not only the symptoms of stress and anxiety, but the stress and anxiety itself. By inserting ultra- fine needles at specific points in the body, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous 20

system and cause the release of neurochemicals. Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, while acupuncture can activate the parasympathetic nervous system; the resulting biochemical changes promote physical and emotional well-being. In acupuncture every patient is considered to be unique, this means that the practitioners will be looking and listening very carefully to everything that the patient says to identify the imbalances which cause the symptoms of anxiety, not just treat the symptoms themselves. Positive changes in lifestyle and exercise are also very valuable. Activities such as meditation, Tai Chi, Qigong and Yoga are excellent forms of mind-body exercise that can improve the ability to control both anxiety and depression.

Diet also plays an important part in the treatment of anxiety. An acupuncturist will provide specific lifestyle advice, relevant to each person to help them overcome their issues. If you or someone you know is struggling at the moment and is finding life overwhelming, then please come and have some Acupuncture. I am always very happy to answer any questions you have so please call or email to discuss how I can help you.
