LIGHT UP SHOREHAM IS COMING TO YOU THIS WINTER! East Street and Brunswick Road will be transformed into a Christmas Market extravaganza which is sure to entertain all the family. With plenty of gift ideas to tempt you, entertainment and rides planned to light up the streets of Shoreham. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun on Friday 8th of December from 4pm to 9pm. The event is being run by Adur District Council, with the support of the Shoreham Christmas Community Group, with a special thanks to FitzHugh Gates for kindly sponsoring the town’s Christmas Tree this year.

FREE SATURDAY CAR PARKING IN SOUTHWICK Good news for shoppers in Southwick! Anyone visiting the town’s precinct on Saturdays will be able to park for free thanks to Adur District Council. From now until the end of the year, the local authority has agreed to waive the fees in the Southwick Square off-road car park on Saturdays. This means there will be no charge for those visiting on key shopping days throughout the autumn and the run-up to Christmas. It comes after listening to traders in the area who said that an increase in car park tariffs approved last year had coincided with a drop in footfall in the area. Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, said: “As a council we are always looking to listen to and support our local traders, who are the lifeblood of our local economy. “Southwick Square plays an integral part in the town’s community so I’m delighted that we are able to support traders in this way. I urge shoppers to take advantage of the scheme and visit some of the excellent independent shops that Southwick has to offer, especially with Christmas approaching.” A new range of tariffs were approved across Adur in October 2016. While other areas have seen an increase in footfall, Southwick has experienced a drop-off. The free parking scheme has been funded from a one-off pot of Government cash designed to support businesses in retail areas. It will run until the end of December. Officials say this will give time to work with traders on developing a longer-term solution. Nikki Lilley, manager of Peter Marson Opticians and secretary of the Southwick Traders Association, said: “The whole idea is to bring people back to shop in the square rather than those people going to other areas that offer free parking. “The response we have had from local residents so far has been fantastic — they can’t wait to come down here to shop to their hearts content. “Southwick has a lot of independent traders who all offer a really good personal service, which means once they come a few times they are likely to keep on coming back.” “I want to thank the council who have been very supportive in making this happen.” 4

SOUTHWICK OPERA CELEBRATES MUSICALS ACROSS THE DECADES

Following the success of ‘That’s Entertainment’, Southwick Opera presents ‘That’s Entertainment Too’, an all singing, all dancing tribute to film and stage musicals. Among the songs featured will be ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess, ‘I won’t send roses’ from Mack and Mabel, High Society’s ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’, ‘Oh happy day’ from Sister Act and the ‘Ballad of Barry and Freda’ written by the late Victoria Wood. Our talented dancers will be tapping to ‘42nd Street’ and ‘All that jazz’ and jazzing it up to ‘Do you love me’. From Cabaret the girls will perform ‘Mein Herr’ and if you know the film, you will remember the costumes they ‘almost’ wore in the show! Mother and daughter duo direct and costume the show and also choreograph the routines, along with Sarah Martin and Sam Bloom. The compere will be Jamie Collins setting the context for each item performed, which adds an educational element for both new and established theatrical fans (and provides much needed time for the cast to change!). Performances take place at The Barn Theatre, Southwick from Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th November at 7.30 pm with a 2.30 pm matinee on Saturday. Ticket prices £10 to £12 available from The Box Office 01273 597094 or visit www.southwickcommunitycentre.org.uk

CHRISTMAS FAYRE AND LATE NIGHT SHOPPING The Friends of Marlipins Museum will be holding their annual Christmas Fayre at the Marlipins Museum, Shoreham High Street on Saturday 25th November from 10.30am to 4.30pm, followed by Shoreham’s Late Night Shopping on Friday 8th December from 5.00pm to 9.00pm. For bargain hunters this is a great time to do ones Christmas shopping. There will be a be a wide variety of gifts for all, with stalls selling handcrafted goods such as woodcraft, bags, local prints, customised greeting cards, a great variety of jewellery, homemade cakes and produce and much, much more. There will also be a tombola and a raffle and to keep up the Christmas cheer, hot spiced apple punch with mince pies will be served. For the children Father Christmas will be in attendance on both days. All money raised will go towards the running costs of the Marlipins Museum which receives no grants from anywhere and has to be self-supporting — Shoreham would lose one of the few remaining symbols of its historical past. Cover yourself

H

OW MUCH LIFE COVER DO YOU NEED? It’s a subject most of us don’t like to think about. What if we died? What if we weren’t around? How would this affect our families and loved ones? Not only would people be impacted emotionally, but how would they cope financially? Of course, it wouldn’t be the first thing on their minds, but leaving your family secure in their home and with no work pressure would certainly help, whatever anyone says! It is quite rare that people have the right amount of cover to achieve this. So, what is the right level of cover? Firstly, think about having enough cover to pay any outstanding debts, such as mortgages, credit cards and loans. A simple life policy can cover this, and it is often surprisingly affordable. Then, you could think about the outgoings that need to be covered: utility bills, food, running a car and possible childcare costs. Literally take yourself and your income out of the equation and see what would need to be paid. A calculation often used is 10 times the annual amount, but if you have a large family to support or young children, this could be increased to 15 or 20 times.

“It is important to remember that ‘term’ assurance policies do not at any time acquire a ‘cash in’ value.” How do the plans work? The plans pay out a lump sum in the event of your death during an agreed term. The most simple type of policy is Term Assurance, which gives you a level amount of cover for a number of years. You decide the cover level and term when the plan starts. You can cover just yourself or take the policy in joint names to cover both yourself and your partner. Another version is Decreasing Term or Mortgage Protection Assurance, which is less costly as the cover level reduces during the term in line with what you owe on your mortgage. It is important to remember that “term” assurance policies do not at any time acquire a “cash in” value. There are other types of policies which are more flexible and can be arranged to suit your circumstances and needs, for example, to cover an inheritance tax bill. How much does it cost? The cost of the cover depends on many factors, but mainly your age and your health. Nowadays there is no gender difference; EU regulations mean that men and women pay the same rates. The older you are, the higher 6

the premiums are likely to be as the risk to the life company potentially increases. Also, if you have had health issues, these may adversely affect the cost. Affordability is always a factor when working out the level of cover. It is wise to get quotes for varying amounts and terms to see what suits best. An element of compromise can normally be built into any planning involved. If you would like to discuss your cover needs, please feel free to call me. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. Please call me, Claire Cook, on 01273 224667. Adur’s Twittens

T

HE OLD SUSSEX dialect word ‘twitten’ is used in both West and East Sussex to describe a small passageway or an alley between two buildings which leads to the streets, or other areas behind. Some sources suggest it might be a corruption of the phrase ‘betwixt and between’ and it is perhaps related to the German word ‘twiete’, meaning an alley or lane, or the word ‘tussen’ which is used for similar paths in the Netherlands. In modern German the word ‘Zwischen’ means between. Lewes has ancient narrow walkways from ancient Saxon time, often lined by old, high flint walls. These twittens are also called cat creeps in some Sussex towns, such as Hastings. Lewes has Church Twitten off School Hill that leads to a former coach house where the sculpture Rodin’s ‘The Kiss’ once resided. Its millionaire owner had invited Rodin to Lewes and then loaned the sculpture to the council. They found the statue of naked lovers too risqué to display in the town hall which was why it spent many years tucked away down a twitten. In Brighton the twittens between the houses date from the Georgian period. There are also narrow tunnels to the seafront that were used by the Prince Regent and others to reach the sea. One leading from a Kemp Town enclosure is rumoured to have inspired the journey down the rabbit hole in ‘Alice In Wonderland’. Worthing too has twittens including Field Row that runs from Montague Street almost to Richmond Road and dates from at least the 1800s. The word twitten is also used to describe the narrow paths of Hampstead Garden suburb. Elsewhere in the country such alleyways are known by a variety of different names. In Nottingham, northwest Essex and East Hertfordshire the word used is ‘twitchell’. In the north east of England, a twitten is a ‘chare’ or a ‘ginnel’ in northern England. Twittens are ‘opes’ in Plymouth, ‘jiggers’ in Liverpool and ‘gitties’ in Derbyshire and Leicestershire. In Scotland they are vennels and in the city of York the twittens go by the lovely name of ‘snickelways’. Perhaps that has some relation to the word sneaking, and a twitten is certainly a way that a local who knows his or her hometown can quickly move around it. In Shoreham you can on passing through several of the twittens

arrive closer to the river, something that would once have been important, when the Adur was a route for trade and smuggling. In Shoreham the twittens are unnamed and we tend describe them by the destinations. Most people know where you mean if you mention “the twitten between Victoria Road and West Street, but it is strange how over the centuries it and its neighbour between Victoria Road and Old Shoreham Road have not been named. A Shoreham twitten is different from a Shoreham alleyway in that it travels between the houses, passing the sides of the buildings and for the fact that it is paved or covered in tarmac. It is maintained by the council, it is a public right of way as a footpath, and is not the responsibility of nearby homeowners. In Hastings the medieval twittens often lead to small courtyards between the houses. Horsham’s Pirie’s Place between North Street and Park Street is a twitten that passes along the side of a medieval house. Horsham has a number of twittens dating from the Middle Ages. Hove too has twittens, mainly in the area between Kingsway and the seafront. Picturesque Rye has twittens including a medieval one called The Needles surrounded by houses that date from that era. Back in Shoreham there is a very short twitten between Church Street and Middle Street, which is again lined by a flint wall. Another links the northern reach of Old Shoreham Road with Connaught Avenue. Ham Road has narrow passages between buildings and high flint walls and again these take the walker closer to the river, though the area they pass through was extensively remodelled in the 20th century. Away from the Adur, is the footpath known as Lover’s Lane which is behind Mill Lane. It once ended in a kissing gate Southwick’s The Twitten is a twitten that has on becoming a road presumably been named after its earlier origin. In Brighton The Lanes have similar characteristics to twittens and the narrow Black Lion Lane could probably also be classed as one. Hailsham has several twittens including one named Stoney Lane, which again like many twittens is flanked by a high stone wall, that in this case was built by inmates of the neighbouring workhouse. The shorter, darker days

S

O HERE WE are, moving into winter, with the clocks having changed and the dark short days, getting shorter. We are on that change over from the end of Autumn into the beginning of winter and on this side of Christmas we tend to be lucky and get away with the worst of the frosts, and still have the odd warmer day, but don’t let your guard down! This time of year, can feel a bit like a lost cause in the garden, with so few plants flowering or giving any colour in the garden, but it really is a time to prepare and help to get the most out

of the garden in later months. It seems a long way off, but the first buds will be coming through in a short space of time. Working in the garden all year round, I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t spot something new starting to grow or bud in the garden, and mother nature never lets anything stand still for long. Have a good look around the garden and start clearing whatever needs to go, whether its dead plants, piles of fallen leaves, old pots, or all the broken children’s toys still sitting there from the summer. A good clear up in the garden, instantly makes the place look a lot better. Looking around the garden, you’ve probably invested money over the recent years on some fairly large items, such as barbecues, and furniture. Get them cleaned up and put away for the winter. It amazes me how much people spend on these items, then leave them to the ravages of the weather and have to replace them the following year. Once you’re clear in the garden, you can really see the wood for the trees if you’ll pardon the pun! Gardens evolve, either through taste and trends, or peoples age and ability and use of the garden. It really is alright to change things around again and again. If something doesn’t look right or you are sick of the sight of it, get rid and start again with something different. All too often I go into gardens where there are a couple of shrubs that serve no purpose and obviously need to go, yet the owners have never got around to getting rid of them. If you’re not sure get a second opinion from a friend. Don’t be afraid to be ruthless and try something different. There is so much information available these days to get inspiration and ideas from. Once you’ve got some ideas, if it’s a bit much for you, don’t be afraid to call in a professional. In most cases you don’t need a designer, most landscapers or gardeners see lots of different gardens and can give ideas and should give an honest opinion on what will work or wont. I love seeing peoples’ reaction when we clear a garden at the start of a project. Most people never comprehend how big their garden actually is and these days when space is at a premium it’s good to make as much use of what you have. So perhaps when you are done and as the day gets shorter you can sit down with a cup of tea and a book in the warm, and start thinking through some ideas for the new year. You see not all gardening has to be hard work and getting your hands dirty! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Benefits of Paddle Boarding This month Louis Jones will be looking at a relatively new sport that has taken off in Shoreham and the local surrounding area, Paddle Boarding or Stand Up Paddling (SUP). SUP has many amazing health benefits, and is relatively easy to do. What is SUP?

Stand Up Paddling originated in Hawaii, as an alternative

to surfing. It is an outdoor activity, whereby you stand on a large surf like board, and propel yourself along the surface of the water using a paddle.

What are the Health Benefits of SUP?

Improves Balance: SUP requires you to stand up on a board, which requires good core stability and leg strength in order to maintain balance. Therefore this is a great form of exercise for people who suffer with lower back issues, as a way to strength. LOW IMPACT: SUP is a very low impact exercise, making it great for reducing stress on joints, ligaments and tendons. This can be really beneficial for runners, who suffer from shins splints or joint pain. FULL BODY WORKOUT: Due the nature of SUP and the position you are in, it’s a great way to strengthen the whole body, in a gentle manner.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

REHABILITATION OF INJURIES: As this is a low impact activity, and a who body strengthening exercise, it is great for injured sportspeople, whilst developing core strength, which plays and important role in recovery. PROMOTES GOOD POSTURE: Developing good core strength and balance can also have a positive impact on posture, which can reduce the risk of us suffering with lower back and neck injuries. By developing good posture, it can also help with rehabilitation of injuries, because we are more likely to perform activities with better form or technique. IMPROVES CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS: If you’ve ever tried SUP, you will realize how well it works your heart and lungs, which is fantastic for staying healthy and developing fitness levels. If you would like to discuss any of the points made in this article or if you would like advice on what other good forms of exercise there are for developing good core strength and fitness, then please feel free to get in touch by phone on 01273 467614 or email me at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. Lions: It’s a Knockout!

E

VERY YEAR ON the first Sunday in March Lions from Shoreham through to Seaford and up to Lewes organise a day of fun and games for adults with learning and/or physical difficulties at Longhill Sports Centre, Brighton. Some teams have come year on year and it is an eagerly awaited highlight in the calendar. As the event is held on the ground floor of the sports centre wheelchair users can be accommodated. Brighton and Hove’s mayor attends during the afternoon to present the prizes. A good time is had by all. If you know of a group who would enjoy such an event get in touch with the Lions and they will ensure the group receives an invite. You will know from the August edition

16

that Lions are very interested in sight projects and on World Sight Day on 12 October a number of Lions from Adur East plus some members of the community visited Chichester Lions’ spectacle sorting workshop at the Apuldram Centre. It was fascinating to see how the spectacles are sorted and where they are sent to. All the opticians in the Shoreham and Southwick area take in old spectacles and members of Adur East collect them and forward them to Chichester. Over the year around 5000 pairs are sent. On Saturday 14 October Adur East Lions held their annual Awareness Morning at Shoreham Methodist Church Hall. An opportunity for the Lions to promote the work they do within the local community and encourage new

membership. Each year a number of local groups are invited to join them to also promote themselves and tell visitors exactly what they do. This year five organisations joined the Lions. They were Parkinsons UK, PSP, St Johns, Sussex MS Centre and Southwick & Fishersgate Horticultural Society. Christmas is now even closer so do please think whether you have an hour or two to spare to help the club with their many yuletide activities. If you think you would make a good Santa stand-in or have always wanted to be an elf, please get in touch. Also it was interesting as he had never seen happy tears before and he couldn’t understand why everyone was crying so this was so insightful and heartbreaking too. What has been the most difficult thing about fostering? Saying goodbye to the children is always difficult, even when you know it’s right for them to move on. If things don’t work out in a placement you can feel like you’ve failed but you have to remind yourself you did as much as you could.

Making a real difference As part of Brighton and Hove City Council’s LGBT series of blogs, their Foster Care team speak to foster carer Simon (50) who has been fostering teenagers with his partner Rob (also 50) for four years. How long have you been fostering and how many children have you fostered so far? We’ve been fostering male teenagers and unaccompanied asylum seekers for 4 years and have looked after 5 children, mostly on long term respite arrangements where we have them every weekend and during the school holidays. Why did you decide to foster? We’d had an amazing life; enjoying lots of lovely holidays, a wonderful circle of friends and a brilliant social life. We just felt the time was right in our lives to try and make a difference to a child’s life and give something back. We decided to move house so we would have more room to foster, we had a lovely home and we were really ready for a life change. Why did you decide to foster and rather than adopt? We looked into both options but felt that we’d get much more support and training with fostering and it seemed more flexible as with respite foster care we could both continue with our jobs which was important to us. The financial aspect of fostering was important too and although obviously not the main motivation, it was a factor to consider. We realised that the children, whether fostered or adopted, are coming through the same system and have the same needs and we felt with fostering we could help more than 18

one child. We also felt fostering would be a good chance to build our confidence, learn about the system and working with social workers and professionals, receive lots of training and then we could go onto adoption afterwards if we felt it was the right thing to do. How did you find the application process? I actually found the process really therapeutic and I enjoyed it as it unpicks the past and you find out so much about yourself and your behaviours in the process. Even though myself and my partner had known each other for 20 years, we found out new things about each other which was so interesting and I also found out new things about my parents as they were one of my referees. You build a close relationship with your assessing social worker as you’re revealing very personal things to them and they stay with you through the entire 6 months or duration of your assessment. What has been the best thing about fostering? There have been so many highlights, it has been amazing. I think my favourite part of fostering has been doing activities with the children that they have never done before such a cooking for friends, camping and going on holiday. It was incredibly moving and totally unexpected when our foster son stood up and did a speech at

As a same sex couple have you encountered any issues or discrimination? Not at all. It has actually been a really positive thing, especially when the child may not have had a male role model or father in their life or they may have a challenging relationship with their mother so we can offer a different perspective and support. We are an affectionate couple and we definitely had some concerns about how to manage that at home but you just become mindful in the same way as you would as a straight couple fostering. We have never had any issues regarding our sexuality from the children or their birth families and I think this may be misplaced concern about fostering as a same sex couple. What advice would you give to an LGBT person or family considering fostering? Give it a go! You’ll get amazing training and support, learn so much about yourself in the process and be helping a child in need. You need a supportive family around you, a sense of humour and an appreciation that things do always go to plan but you will be supported throughout. If you’re fostering with a partner make sure you make time for yourselves, keep communication open and keep laughing during challenging times. Also I would say that the referrals for a child often don’t paint a fair picture and can be a bit skewed towards the negative. Most of the children are loving, engaging and just craving stability and nurture. If you’d like to find out more about fostering, come to our next information evening on Tues 21st November at 6.30pm at The Sussex Cricket Ground in Hove. Alternatively visit our website at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/fostering or call us for a chat on 01273 295444.

Whose life will you celebrate with St Barnabas House this Christmas?

Y

OUR LOCAL HOSPICE, St Barnabas House, invites you to Light Up a Life. It’s your chance to join a very special event as we come together to remember and celebrate the lives and memories of loved ones this Christmas. Our services of celebration and remembrance will be held at Worthing Assembly Hall on Monday 11 December at 4.30pm and 7pm. A Memory Wall will be on display at both Light Up a Life services. You are very welcome to celebrate the life of your loved one by bringing along photos and writing your thoughts and memories on the Memory Wall. If you can’t come to either service, you can still take part. We can send you an Order of Service, and you can pick up a votive candle from one of our hospice shops to light at home and remember your loved one. Steve was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2013 and was admitted to St Barnabas in January last year. Brave Steve put up a real fight, living life to the full and making the most of the time he had left, but sadly died in March. His wife, Jude, was devastated – but so grateful to St Barnabas. She told us: “I’ll always have a connection to St Barnabas. For me, it’s an uplifting place. I couldn’t have got through Steve’s last weeks without St Barnabas. Last year, I attended Light Up a Life. It’s just lovely. It’s a way of remembering everybody who has passed. It

just brings me closer to Steve.” Will you join our wonderful community celebration and dedicate a light to your loved one? To find out how you can be a part of Light Up a Life, please call our Fundraising Team on 01903 706329.

How your skincare products could be affecting your health

M

ANY PEOPLE ASK me what is the difference between natural, organic skincare and other products and ask why is it better to use natural? Well the answers are to be found by looking on a product label, it is really worth taking the time to educate yourself around the ingredients that are in the products you use on your skin and body. There is a trust in commercial, branded products that makes us feel safe, and we would assume that they wouldn’t use any ingredient that may affect our health or wellbeing, however this is not necessarily the case. The problem arises with cosmetics companies wanting to make as much profit on their products as possible, so they often use cheap fillers and ingredients that have no place being on our skin, such as mineral oil or liquid paraffin that are found in many products, these being a by-product of petroleum! In the case of mineral oil it can create a silky texture to the skin and therefore make us feel that they are moisturising and the aim is to retain moisture, however it sits on top of the skin providing a barrier which will stop the skin being able to eliminate properly, trapping bacteria and blocking the pores, causing acne and congestion as a result. Another element used in many skincare products are preservatives and these are called parabens. Parabens help to prolong the shelf life of any product and help to preserve it, especially if that product contains a water based ingredient due to potential for mould or bacteria to develop. Parabens can contain some unwanted effects on our health, this has been identified because they are xenoestrogens which means they mimic oestrogen in the body, this effect has been linked to reproductive issues and researchers found traces in breast tumour tissue so there may be links to the growth of cancer cells. It also seems that parabens can 26

be stored in the body resulting in a cumulative effect over time and given that Parabens are said to be in about 85% of personal care products it gives you something to be aware of, even if there is a low risk when a small amount is being used, every day over a period of years and it may well make an impact on your health. We are said to absorb about 60% of everything that we put on our skin, and that enters into our body, for instance there was a study done on the use of Sodium Laurel Sulphate a foaming agent that is in most shampoos, shower gels and toothpaste and traces were found in their Liver, heart, eyes and brain of the participants studied.

Add into the mix a cheap synthetic fragrance which can cause skin allergies and irritation. Some products may mention the use of natural or even organic ingredients yet be aware as they may have more irritating preservatives or fragrance added, there’s no point using a product that contains one botanical only to find if you look at the label it has many different synthetic ingredients in it! Very often the longer the list of the ingredients that you can’t understand the more synthetic that product will be, when you see ingredients in Latin that will usually be a natural element in the product. As better alternative, plant botanicals have the power to nourish your skin at a very deep level to heal, to reduce inflammation, balance and harmonise the skin surface especially where there is problems with the skin such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, oily, dry or congested skin and plant ingredients such as essential oils can contain natural antibacterial and anti-septic properties. Our body comes into contact with more chemicals than ever, in our air pollution, the pesticides in our food and chemicals in our household cleaning products, affecting our health but also our environment as detergents and body care products will end up in our water ways and sea. There has been a recent discovery of plastic microbeads used in facial and body scrubs, needing to be banned from use due to the damaging impact on our sea life that swallows these harmful beads to fatal effect. If you are wanting to ditch you synthetic skincare products and switch to some healthy naturals there are many alternatives now available, Contact me (WHO? AND DETAILS) for advice on how to do this and a free skin consultation.
