Shoreham & Southwick
Hand delivered to homes and businesses in the Shoreham and Southwick areas reaching out to over 15,000 readers. Editor’s comment Merry Christmas to all residents of Shoreham and Southwick. It is that time of year once again! Time to get out the decorations, mince pies and mulled wine and, of course, to get into the true spirit of Christmas we cannot forget about Christmas carols! In this month's issue we have the opening of the Adur Ferry Bridge. It was a fantastic day for those who attended this event 91 years after the first bridge was built. You can read more about it on page 4-5. Are you in any of the photos taken by local Photographer Tim Huitson? As always, in this month issue we have our regular articles and of course some very pertinent ones. We have Judy Upton’s latest on Christmas Gooding. It seems only

appropriate at this time of year when giving to others is more rewarding than the receiving. At this time of year many of us will be with our nearest and dearest. I hope that where ever you are, that you will not be alone and that your celebrations are filled with the joy, laughter and merriment for this festive period. On that note, warm seasonal greetings to you all from us here at the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine team. We would like to thank you for your continual support. Infact it is good to hear how well liked the magazine is. So thank you. Warm wishes, Angela

Adur Ferry Bridge opens
T
HOUSANDS OF PEOPLE crossed the new Adur Ferry Bridge in Shoreham-By-Sea for the first time on the 13th November after it was opened to the public. HRH The Duke of Gloucester officially unveiled the bridge in front of a packed crowd at Coronation Green. The Duke pressed the button to close the swing bridge, before leading the throng of people over to Shoreham Beach. He was greeted by a gathering of school children from Swiss Gardens Primary School, Buckingham Park Primary School and St Nicholas & St Marys CE Primary School. He said: “It is a great honour for me to come to Shoreham on this beautiful sunny day and have the very pleasant task of declaring your new Adur Ferry Bridge open. “Clearly it is an important part of the infrastructure to this town and to the beach. “I am sure it will be greatly admired by the tourists who come here to enjoy the benefits of Shoreham.” The swing bridge, which crosses the harbour to connect Shoreham-By-Sea to Shoreham Beach, is for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooter users to use. Built by West Sussex County Council contractor Osborne, it replaced the old Shoreham Footbridge which spanned the 4
River Adur for 91 years. The project was funded by West Sussex County Council, The Big Lottery Fund, cycling charity Sustrans and Adur District Council. West Sussex County Council Chairman Amanda Jupp said: “This bridge, like its elderly predecessor, is a vital link across the River Adur for the communities of Shoreham Beach and Shoreham town.” Osborne Chairman Andrew Osborne added: “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have contributed in the development of this iconic structure. “We hope it will serve as a fitting legacy in replacing the old bridge and continue to serve the community for a further hundred years.” To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Does a fixed rate mortgage suit you? C
URRENTLY MOST NEW borrowers are taking fixed rate mortgages. The reason being that the fixed and variable tracker pay rates are very similar but the tracker rates will probably be increasing at some point in the next 2-3 years. Taking a fixed rate will secure your position for 2,3,5 years or maybe longer. And unusually, in the current market you may not be paying more for the privilege of a fixed rate. This is fine for many, but other people have a changing situation and need more flexibility. For example, you may want to sell your house at some point soon, or you may receive bonuses and wish to use these to reduce your mortgage. Flexibility is one thing most fixed rates do not offer. They are literally set for a period of time, and if you repay over a certain amount before the end of the fixed rate period, you could be charged a penalty. If you need flexibility tracker rate mortgages are a better option. These rates are variable, charged at a certain percentage above the Bank of England base rate for a set period of time. As an example, the Bank Base rate is currently 0.5%, your rate may be at 2.5% above this. Therefore your initial rate would be 3%. The rate would alter each time the Bank of England change their base rate, but you would always be 2.5% above. Many flexible rates are lifetime trackers, meaning that they follow the base rate at this differential for the whole term of the mortgage. The rates are competitive and many have no early repayment charges (or penalties), this allows you to overpay on your mortgage or totally pay it off at anytime. If you overpay many offer the facility to withdraw the overpayment at a later time, or to take payment holidays. Some have offset accounts linked to them. This is an investment account linked to your mortgage. It is a place where you can put your savings and rather than earning interest, the lender reduces what they charge to your mortgage. This is very tax efficient for higher rate taxpayers who pay 40% tax on interest earned. Many people use these accounts to save tax money, or to effectively pay off their mortgage but without totally committing their funds, they still can withdraw the money at any point. Every person’s needs are different, so the trick is to find the right mortgage to suit your own circumstances. Fixed rate mortgages are really competitive right now, however, for 6
the right person, flexible mortgages can not only make life easier, but can save a substantial amount of money over the mortgage term. To find out what type of mortgage will suit you, to discuss remortgaging your current property or purchasing a new one to live in, please call me, Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to help. Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Christmas Gooding S
T THOMAS’S DAY is December 21st and was formerly known as Gooding Day. This was when Gooders from every parish went out to collect food and other donations towards a Christmas feast to distribute among the poor and needy. The historian M.A Lower wrote in 1861: ‘Formerly the old women of every parish went from house to house to beg something for the festivities of Christmas. The miller gave each dame a little flour, the grocer a few raisins, the butcher an odd bit of beef, and so on. From persons not in trade a donation in money was expected.’ In these days long before charity shops, Shoreham and Southwick drapers may well have left boxes outside filled with off cuts or remnants of cloth for the Gooders to collect and distribute, to help the poor keep warm in the depths of winter, as well as providing food and fire logs. It is strange to think that with our current food banks, we have in some ways returned to the ways of these hard times. John Erridge in his book ‘History Of Brighthelmstone’ (1861) remembers as a child, seeing an elderly Phoebe Hessell, (the famous Shoreham resident who went to war disguised as a man), sitting in his kitchen and enjoying a slice of cake and glass of elderberry wine on Gooding Day. Charity began at home and this was the day of the year when less well off and vulnerable neighbours would be welcome and fed at the family’s hearth. In 1874, at Upper Beeding’s Rising Sun inn, Christmas celebrations ensured that none of the poor, or local school children went hungry. The farmers had already given their workers a supply of beef for Gooding Day, and the rector Doctor Bloxam, then donated beef, flour and tea to the entire village’s poor. He recorded “Our annual Christmas dinner dole is the result of a liberal subscription given by the squire of the parish, Mr Bridger, Mr Elliott and Reverend Mr Reeves and many others. The tea was the gift of Mr Scott”. For the children, a tree was hung with toys and sweets, and oranges and prize money were distributed among them. A band toured the town before being themselves entertained at the Rising Sun. Also at Beeding in the 1800s, the vicar would sit at the vicarage window on Gooding Day to give out half crowns to

every elderly lady who handed him an evergreen twig. At Bramber, it was not just the living that supposedly asked for alms on the 21st December. When King John seized Bramber castle in the thirteenth century, the family of the fled lord, William De Braose, was imprisoned and starved to death inside. In later centuries, the children’s ghosts were reportedly seen in Bramber’s streets at Christmas-time, holding out their hands for food. If spoken to however they melted away. On Boxing Day, which is ‘the feast of Stephen’ mentioned in the carol, ‘Good King Wenceslas’, the Poor Boxes in Victorian churches would be opened and the money dispensed to those in need. With the Poor Law Amendment act of 1834, the Ham Road workhouse at Shoreham was, like all of its kind, ordered to serve no special fare at Christmas. It wasn’t until a new Poor Law Board was elected in 1847 that Christmas dinner was finally served to workhouse inmates. Decorations and a Christmas tree were also provided and people were let off all work but their domestic chores for this one-day a year. If you lived in the parish of Old Shoreham in the 1830s then the place to go on New Year’s Day was the Red Lion inn. On that day a new bushel corn measure would be filled with ale and served free to all comers. It is a custom that apparently continued for around 80 years, with flowers, leaves and green paper wrapped around the corn measure. It was filled twice and the ale was then ladled out with a pint-sized mug by a ‘baler’ and drunk from glasses. Only the baler had the privilege of drinking from the corn measure itself. The term for those who turned up and partook of the free ale was ‘bushellers’. The tradition of giving food and money to the less fortunate on Gooding Day died out as a custom from the 1850s, perhaps in part due to the fact that many of those needing a little charity at Christmas were now forced by law to seek help only at the workhouse. The custom of the women of each parish going door to door to collect food and other donations ceased, although other traditions such as the Tipteerers who went door-to-door with their Christmas mummers play, continued until around the beginning of the 20th century, and of course the door-to-door to singing of Christmas carols, continues today. A calm garden after a storm I
plants and trees and also to structures in the garden such as fences. It's likely we will suffer a few more storms and windy days over the coming months, so take the opportunity whilst it's calm to have a check around the garden. Sometimes the damage isn't always apparent after a storm and also a combination of wet ground and a few windy days can have a devastating effect on trees and fences causing them to become loose in the ground. Check to see if there is any damage to trees or any branches that look like they will come down in a strong wind. If you can do it safely yourself, then remove the branches with a neat cut using a sharp saw. That way it's less likely to let disease into the wound as opposed to snapping them off. If it's too high or difficult to reach then please don't struggle. Get a professional in. It really isn't worth the risk and unfortunately we see it too often, which is why we get tree surgeons in to help us. Check your fences, trellis and any other garden structure for damage. The most likely to fail are simple panel fences. If anything needs repairing do it now rather than waiting for the whole fence to go. It's also worth checking shed roofs as these can lose felt or simply lift off, causing damage and leaving the contents at the mercy of the elements. Another casualty we often see is damaged gates. The damage is often caused from the gates not having any way of securing them when open, so consequently they get blown open and shut in the wind. A simple investment in a gate hook saves a lot of time and expense. Hopefully any other damage in the garden was minor, but if you suffered the loss of a large tree, it can be very upsetting. It is an opportunity to plant something new in its place or the chance to revamp that area of the garden in a way you would never have thought have doing all the time the tree was there. The garden always has a way of getting over any hardships and normally comes back stronger for it, so don't despair. Well all that remains is for me to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas as we look forward to the New Year and all the surprises that it brings in the garden. Even in the depths of winter keep smiling because the first new shoots of spring growth aren't really that many days away! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

T'S BEEN A bit of a month since I last wrote, with a combination of dry days, a couple of weeks of higher rainfall than average and not forgetting the storm. On top of that we are heading towards Christmas and also the shortest day in a couple of weeks, so it won't be long till the days ever so slowly start getting longer and the gardens start to come to life again. That's a comforting thought when were in the depths of the midwinter! The storm caused a lot of damage in the garden, both to

Fantastic Mr. Fox
Stormy waters
HETHER IT’S RAINING ‘cats and dogs’ or we’re in the middle of a summer heat wave, the British weather is always a hot topic of conversation. The Fox This fantastic Photo: © Paul Robards photo of an urban fox sitting in the snow by Paul Robards from North Lancing, has been voted by the public as the overall winner of the Sussex Wildlife Trust online photographic competition ‘Rain or Shine.’ Photographers were asked to submit a picture of wildlife using the theme of Britain’s ever-changing weather as their inspiration. The 12 shortlisted images will feature in the Sussex Wildlife Trust free 2014 online calendar. The overall winning image of 'The Fox' by Paul Robards was taken in his neighbour’s snowy garden. Paul’s photo will appear as the December 2014 calendar image. He also receives a cash prize of £150 donated by The Ecology Consultancy. Voted second by the public is an image of a comma butterfly by Kutub Uddin from Bognor Regis and third place goes to Madeline Louise Ewins from Southwick for her photo of beech leaves in sunlight. The calendar is available to download now at: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk
ESPITE THE COUNTY wide devastation following the storm that hit Sussex last month, Sussex Wildlife Trust report an unexpected wildlife benefit. Steve Tillman, Reserve Manager at Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Steve Tillman by Woods Mill pond. near Henfield Photo: © Sue Curnock, Sussex Wildlife Trust said: ‘The high rainfall over the weekend has helped to refill the pond after it was drained last year to allow essential restoration work. This work was vital to improve the quality of this important wildlife habitat. However, many of our regular visitors were disappointed to find the water levels so low and I am delighted to be able to encourage them to come back and take a look now the water has returned.’ During the restoration work, Steve organised the removal of thousands of non-native fish from the pond to create a better habitat for wetland wildlife such as dragonflies, toads, frogs and aquatic plants. He is pleased to report that common darter dragonflies have already been seen laying their eggs.

Foot relief
22/01/2013 10:47
So here we are, December already! Christmas is fast approaching followed by the inevitable New Year’s resolutions. So what will yours be this year? If the idea of more exercise is hovering but pain is stopping you then maybe our podiatrist, Karen, can help. Podiatry/Chiropody can relieve pain with routine treatments but Karen can also assess and advise you on specific footwear, stretching and strengthening exercises and orthotics. Orthotics, sometimes called insoles or shoe inserts are varied. A good analogy for these devises are glasses but for your feet. The type you need is often as individual as you are and vary from simple insoles to cushion your feet to prescription orthotics that help realign your feet reducing pressures and making your feet work more efficiently. So whether you want to do more walking, gardening or take up a new sport come and see Karen at the First Foot Clinic, 84 High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, to see how she can help you achieve your goals. Contact us on 01273 455080, email at email@firstfootclinic.co.uk, or visit: www.firstfootclinic.co.uk. Merry Christmas. Please mention Inside Shoreham & Southwick when responding to adverts
