Jack and the Beanstalk Music Theatre 2000 and Showtime Productions, two of the leading musical theatre producers in Brighton, are proud to bring to the Windmill Theatre in Hove a Traditional, Magical, musical Pantomime for the whole family to enjoy. Jack and the Beanstalk is a well proven favourite story bursting with Boos and Cheers, full of songs and laughter! A fine cast has been assembled with a wonderful cast of singing actors, dancers, live band and a sprinkling of Magic to make the pantomime a Must See for Christmas! The story goes ... Down in their luck Jack and his mum can barely afford the rent and to make matters worse the whole town is being terrorised by an Evil Giant. When Jack is tricked into selling the family cow for a handful of Magic beans – and returns home to the furious Dame Trott – their Crazy adventure at the Top of the Beanstalk begins.
THE LADY KILLERS
If you often feel depressed when all the Christmas and New Year celebrations are over, we’ve got just the answer for you. Come along to the Barn Theatre in Southwick and see Wick Theatre Company’s production of The Ladykillers, a brilliant black comedy adapted from the 1955 film of the same name by Graham Lineham. The film starred Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom among others. Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in the lopsided house of sweet but strict Mrs. Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus’ brilliantly conceived heist job. The Police are left stumped but Mrs. Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs. Wilberforce is alone with five desperate men…but who will be forced to face the music? Dates are Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 January, at 7.45pm, with a matinée on the Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £11.00 from the Box Office on 01273 597094, or www.wicktheatre.co.uk

COASTAL SCIENCE FAIR AIMS TO CLOSE LOCAL SKILLS GAP
West Sussex scientists, engineers and inventors of the future will get a unique insight into the courses and careers available to them locally at a special festival in the spring. Coastal STEMfest, which will be held during February and March 2016, will be a celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for schools and colleges in Coastal West Sussex and will help local businesses forge links with schools and colleges. A series of fun and exciting interactive demonstrations, workshops, shows and events in schools and local companies, it will aim to enthuse the next generation to study and build careers in STEM-related disciplines and to develop the tools needed to drive the economy of the future. It is based on the success of Crawley STEMfest, an annual event in schools and colleges during May and June that was first held in 2012, and will culminate in the Big Bang @ Butlin’s, Bognor Regis on 3rd March 2016, an opportunity for young people and their teachers to enjoy hands-on activities, discuss ideas, get advice from professionals — and be inspired. Coastal STEMfest is being organised by a small team including the Coastal West Sussex (CWS) Partnership, West Sussex County Council, Sussex Learning, Network, Tomorrow’s Engineers and STEM Sussex, the not-for-profit outreach department of the University of Brighton that has organised Crawley STEMfest and the Big Bang Fair South East since their launch four years ago. This event will be an ideal opportunity for secondary schools to get their students involved and set their learning in a real-world STEM context. It is also a great opportunity for employers to engage with their potential future workforce by providing activities to schools and colleges and at the Big Bang @ Butlin’s, Bognor Regis that will make STEM subjects relevant to local industries. For further information please contact: STEM Sussex, tel: 01273 641874 or email coastalstemfest@brighton.ac.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Mortgages – Finding the right one for you W ITH SO MANY mortgage products on the market, how do you find the one which is best for you? Here are some handy tips to finding the right mortgage deal. • Think about the type of rate you would like. Currently whilst rates are relatively low some people are opting for fixed rates. This secures a set rate and allows them to budget ahead for a set period of time. Trackers are set at differential rates to the Bank of England base rate and will go up or down if the bank base rate changes. • Check out the redemption terms. Fixed rates normally come with early repayment charges; you may have to pay a penalty if you pay off the mortgage during the fixed rate period. If you think your situation may change you might be better opting for a tracker rate, some of these deals are more flexible and allow you to redeem without penalty at any time. • Take the charges into account. Some lenders offer low rates, but have higher application and valuation fees. Over the deal period, this can make a big difference to the overall cost of your mortgage. Check out the overall outgoings during the deal period, you may find that it would be better opting for a slightly higher rate, but with lower initial costs. • Check affordability should rates rise. You will be given a Key Features Illustration by your adviser, this will show how much your monthly repayment will increase by should the interest rates rise by 1% or 2%. Make sure that you can afford the higher payments should this happen, alternatively if your budget is tight, consider a fixed rate mortgage. • Check the mortgage features. Some rates offer overpayments, underpayments and payment holidays. This may not seem important when you apply for your mortgage, but could make all the difference later on. • Shop Around. If you simply walk into your local building society you are seriously restricting your chances of finding the best rate. Remember, they only offer their own range of products. You may find a better deal elsewhere, also their lending policy may not suit your own circumstances. • The best way of finding the right lender and best mortgage deal for you is to consult an independent financial adviser. They can research the whole market, advise you on the right rate and deal with the lender on your behalf.

Smith Hannington
A
NY FAMILY THAT has lived in Shoreham or Southwick for several generations will no doubt, at some time have shopped at the Hanningtons Department Store in Brighton’s North Street. A favourite with Christmas shoppers for generations, its founder was a man who was born in Shoreham. Smith Hannington was born here in the year 1784 and his father Charles was a local brewer. Smith Hannington became an apprentice in a drapery company at the age of fourteen. When he was twenty-three he was able to acquire 3 North Street, Brighton and opened it as a shop selling haberdashery and linen drapery in 1808. It was a small shop but in a fashionable part of Brighton, and Smith Hannington worked long hours to make it a success. It was at this time that the Prince Regent and his fashionable friends began making Brighton the place to be seen. With the building of the Royal Pavilion and the rapid expansion of Regency Brighton and Hove, it was a very fortunate time to run a shop, particularly one on such a convenient site that would attract both visitors and residents alike. In 1809 Smith Hannington married Elizabeth Stalker. His shop also received a Royal Warrant in that year, further increasing its reputation in Brighton society. When his mother died in 1816, with the money he was left, Hannington was able to buy numbers 1–5 North Street and other properties, to grow and diversify his retail concerns. His son Charles joined him in the business and the company rapidly expanded as the coming of the railway brought people to Brighton in ever-greater numbers. By now they were selling furniture, carpets, clothes of many kinds and even running a funeral business. Smith Hannington died in 1855 at the age of 70, leaving his son Charles to continue running the family business. It was Charles who made Hanningtons a department store by having an architect join and redesign the properties. By the 1920s you could do all your shopping for the festive season at Hanningtons. There were fashionable clothes and hats for all ages, gramophone records and all manner of china, glassware and giftware. Thirty-two phone lines allowed customers to place orders without even needing to visit the store in person. Although the shop was damaged in a World War II air raid, it continued to flourish. In the 1950s limousine hire was added to the business. In 1966 the last of the Hannington family to remain on the store’s board
8
Hanningtons was founded at 3 North Street, on the site of these later buildings.
of directors died, and in 1969 it was bought be a company called South Bank. They added a branch of Hatchard’s bookshop in 1978 that brought a number of famous authors to Brighton for book signings. In the 1990s however, the Old Churchill Square shopping centre was replaced with a new, completely redesigned version with many new shops and much more convenient parking. Now Hanningtons faced strong competition for shoppers. Hanningtons survived fellow Brighton department stores Army and Navy, and Vokins, but its days were numbered and in 2001 it finally closed its doors for the last time. Today there are a number of small shops in the buildings that were once occupied by Hanningtons. In a way retail shopping has taken a step back into the past, as recent surveys have shown people tend to visit more small shops once more while doing their Christmas shopping, rather than purchasing everything under one roof. Those department stores that did survive into the 21st century, now need to have a strong online presence, bringing the personal service and reliable deliveries that such businesses relied on to thrive, into the internet age. Short days, long nights W ELL HERE WE are again, counting down the days to the New Year, with Christmas upon us. In general it’s been a fairly mild year, escaping any snow and ludicrously warm temperatures for the latter part of the autumn. Unfortunately we suffered in the summer with lots of cold winds, which seemed to effect of lot of plants, and especially vegetables and fruit. Still it’s always nice looking forward to a New Year and the challenges it will bring.
10
We may well be in the middle of winter, with the coldest of days and the shortest of days, but we are now past the winter solstice, which means little by little we will start gaining day light, slowly at first, but that’s all it takes to trigger new growth in some plants. Of course we are also heading towards the first couple of months of the year, where we have the highest risk of the really cold frosts and snow, so do get prepared. It tends to be one of the quietest times in the garden, so it’s a good chance to keep on top of things. Check gutters on sheds for blockages, and make sure water butts are still ok. If you are storing seeds, bulbs or fruit then have a periodical check on them to ensure they don’t get eaten by little visitors or affected by mould or rot. There’s nothing more disappointing then discovering it in the spring. Have a check of your garden tools and give them a clean and sharpen up, and once and for all organize the shed. If it needs a few extra shelves or a tool rack, then do it now, rather than saying I’ll do it next year and then getting too busy to do it! Now is a good time to cut back climbers in the garden, especially those on archways or trellis. Chances to carry out autumn pruning have been limited due to the bad weather so go through the garden and remove dead or unwanted growth. Cut back perennial plants that have died back to clear the way for next year. Clear as much debris from the beds to remove safe havens for diseases that may over winter, but be careful of any wildlife. Once the beds are clear top up compost to the beds and finish with a good layer of bark mulch. Look after the wildlife in the garden. It does such an amazing job in helping the eco-system of the garden, and even the things we don’t want act as food for other animals or insects, so it’s well worth a little effort, of leaving some form of habitat for them, or some food in the colder months One thing I do like to do at this time of year is to plan what I am going to do the following year, so take a little time to do it. Best of all its one of those jobs you can do on a quiet Christmas holiday afternoon sitting in an armchair, whilst the great escape is on in the background….again! Have a great Christmas and a Wonderful New Year. Mark Oakley Any Garden To advertise call: 01273 452065

When your pain becomes a handful! This month Louis Jones has seen a few injuries related to hands and fingers.
W
ITH THE WEATHER becoming colder, and ground getting slippery, as well as people booking ski holidays, hands can be a vulnerable area. Fractured fingers, ligament sprains to joints, and tendon injuries, although not that common, do happen from time to time, and getting good prompt treatment is very important. It’s not until we injure our hands that we realize just how awkward it is, trying to open a jar, turn a door handle or do menial tasks like dressing, doing up shirt buttons or even writing. What should we do if we injure our hands?
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

1. If you have at least 2 of the following symptoms, consult a doctor or go to A+E immediately: a. Swelling, b. Deformity c. Loss of function (i.e. gripping, picking up objects) d. Pins and needles or numbness e. Unable to bear weight on your hand (i.e. pushing off arm rest to stand up) f. If your become over-sensitive to using ice packs (your pain increases) 2. If you have consulted a doctor or had an x-ray and you have not broken a bone, continue to follow RICE treatment for 48 hours: a. Rest the area b. Ice pack to help reduce swelling c. Compress the area or use tape to support to finger to your next one d. Elevate the area to help reduce swelling. You may need to use a sling to comfortably hold this position, with hand above elbow. 3. After 48 hours start to gently exercise in a warm to hot bowl of water, and use gels to help massage swelling. 4. After 48 hours, or after the instruction of a specialist, you should seek a physiotherapist, who can treat your injury to help speed up recovery and give exercises to increase your mobility and strength. 5. If you have fractured a bone, you may be required to wear a cast or splint on the hand or finger, until your specialist instructs otherwise. After your cast or splint is removed you should consult a physiotherapist, if an appointment has not already been arranged for you. What happens if we ignore a problem or let things settle on their own? It is not uncommon to see: 1. Joints get very stiff and painful. 2. Tendons shorten and get very tight, reducing your ability to open and close your hand and bend and straighten your fingers. 3. Ligaments remain weak and painful. 4. Muscles get weak, meaning you cannot grip easily. 5. Long-term effects may include Osteoarthritis, which again affects joint movement.
