NEW COUNCIL HOUSING SET FOR ADUR
ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS
The supply of affordable housing is not only high on the Council's objectives, but a major national issue. Last month, Adur District Council gave to go ahead to deliver a new housing project in Southwick. An innovative approach will see new council housing built in Adur for the first time in over 25 years, providing much needed social and affordable housing. On Council owned land in Albion Street, there currently sits two empty hostels and seven units of temporary accommodation. In a report discussed by the Council's Joint Strategic Committee, it was estimated that renovating these properties and maintaining standards would cost almost £1.2million. Therefore, Councillors have backed a new plan to redevelop the site and construct 36 private units, plus 15 units of affordable housing offered at a mix of affordable and social rent. The project would see the Council enter an agreement with a local developer, eliminating the risk of needing to use taxpayers money. Current statistics show that over 80% of households on the Housing Register in Adur are waiting for a 1 or 2 bedroom property. By delivering new units of these types, the Council also hope it will allow existing tenants to downsize and therefore free up family sized housing for those that require such accommodation. Executive Member for Customer Services, Cllr Carson Albury, commented: “This project indicates the proactive stance we're taking as a Council, to provide suitable high quality housing for those in need. Both stock and land supply are key issues in our district, so it's vital we maximise nearby opportunities like Albion Street, where current properties are lying unused or unfit for purpose.” The financial implications in the long term are also hugely in favour of building new properties on the land. Whereas a costly refurbishment would lead to an estimated annual income of £44,240, the proposed redevelopment would exceed this by over £30,000 per annum, at £75,790. With approval from Executive Members, Adur District Council will now work to enter a development agreement to deliver the new affordable homes.
Wick Theatre Company’s next production, Richard Bean’s awarding winning play, One Man, Two Guvnors, is a glorious celebration of British Comedy. There’s laughout-loud satire, live music from a skiffle band, plenty of slapstick and some glittering one-liners. The action is set in Brighton in the early 1960s, in the world of some small-time crooks. At the centre of the action is the bumbling Francis Henshall, who has somehow got himself hired by two minor gangsters. Chaos unfolds as Francis desperately tries to stop these two ‘guvnors’ from meeting, while they meanwhile are trying to hide their own identities. The play was a smash-hit at the National Theatre in 2011, before transferring to the West End and then to Broadway. It is one of the funniest plays in a generation. Dates are 14-17 December, evenings at 7.45pm, with a Saturday matinèe at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £11.00 from the Box Office on 01273 597094, or www.wicktheatre.co.uk
WANTED: ARTIST TO DIVE AND SHOW THE MAGIC OF OUR SEAS! Sussex Wildlife Trust is encouraging established marine artists or those still at college in the county to apply for a national award to enable them to undergo dive training to gain inspiration for their work. The Undersea Art Award, organised jointly by The Wildlife Trusts and the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA), will not only pay for an artist to learn how to dive, but will give them the opportunity to exhibit their art inspired by marine life at the SWLA annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Previous winners have created wonderful art works to highlight the urgent need for Marine Conservation Zones – from paintings to sculpture. The Undersea Art Award is launched in Sussex today. Applicants have until Friday 27 February to say how they’d make the most of the experience. The award, established in 2007, provides a bursary for an established artist to learn to dive and then to work underwater off the coast, recording the wildlife of the sea. Sussex Wildlife Trust Marine Officer, Olle Åkesson, said ‘The Undersea Art Award funds diving lessons for artists with a passion for nature who want to find out more about the astonishingly varied submerged landscapes around UK shores. The idea is to create art inspired by the creatures which live in our wonderful cold water coral beds, sponge meadows, canyons and sandbanks.’ Marine Conservation Zones are a type of protected area at sea 4

where human activity is restricted to protect wildlife and habitats. The Government is creating these zones in the seas around England, following the passing of the Marine & Coastal Access Act (2009). These protected areas will allow sustainable use of the sea whilst protecting a range of species and habitats found in English waters from damaging activity. The complications of retiring
I
F YOU ARE approaching retirement you may finally be facing that large pile of pension paperwork you have been filing away for many years. Now is a time for careful planning to make sure you get things right for your retirement income. Here are some questions that may need to be answered: Do you remain with the current provider and take income from them? Would another provider potentially pay you a higher income? If you do consider transferring to another provider are there any valuable benefits which could be lost? If you were to die after taking your pension, is there a benefit paid to your spouse or dependants? Do you require a guaranteed income for the rest of your life or would you prefer more flexible terms? In April 2015 the government introduced radical changes in how people can access their pension funds. From this time people were allowed to access the whole of their pension savings rather than just a limited amount. However, only a certain percentage of the total fund withdrawn would be tax free. In most cases you will be able to take around 25% of your fund as a tax free cash sum. If you make withdrawals above this amount, they will be taxed as earned income. You could withdraw the whole of your pension fund (an uncrystallised fund pension lump sum or UFPLS), or you could possibly take a series of lump sum withdrawals. Alternatively, if you want to take flexible income directly from your fund, you may need to transfer your pension funds to a flexi- income drawdown contract. You could either take all of the tax free cash upfront, investing the remaining fund and drawing taxed income directly from it; alternatively you could take regular withdrawals as a combination of tax free cash and taxed income. Always seek professional advice on the tax and other implications when making withdrawals from your pension fund. Another advantage of taking retirement income in this way is that you can leave your fund to a chosen beneficiary should you die. They in turn can leave it to their chosen beneficiary, and so on. If the current holder of the plan is under 75 when they die the fund can be left tax free to the next person. In writing about pension options, we mustn’t forget annuities Rates are currently low, but some people still prefer a known and guaranteed income for the rest of their lives. Death benefits 8
on annuities are, however, limited and they cannot be changed once set up. If you would like advice on any of the above or other financial matters please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer independent advice and would be very happy to help. Finally I would like to wish all readers a very happy Christmas and New Year! The Sussex Carol
S
everal British counties have Christmas Carols named after them. Here we have the Sussex Carol, which is sometimes referred to by its first line ‘On Christmas night all Christians sing.’ It was 1684 when Luke Wadding first published the words to this carol. He was a 17th century Irish bishop and the words first appeared in his volume entitled ‘Small Garland of Pious and Godly Songs’. It is not known if Wadding was the author of the verses or whether he had heard them elsewhere and was putting them in writing for the first time. At this point there was no link to Sussex and the lyrics do not, as do some other carols refer to specific locations or British sights — such as the depictions of the natural world in ‘The Holy And The Ivy’ or ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’. It is not known who wrote the music for the Sussex Carol, and it has had at least two tunes. In 1878, Henry Ramsden Bramley and John Stainer published a version in their ‘Christmas Carols Old And New’. The current words and tune however were discovered and written down by Cecil Sharp in Buckland Gloucestershire and the well known composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958), who heard it being sung by a woman called Harriet Verrall of Monk’s Gate, near Horsham. This is where it gained the name ‘The Sussex Carol’ as it was guessed that it might have originated in our county. The first verse as of 1904 was recorded as: ‘On Christmas night all Christians sing, To hear the news the angels bring, On Christmas night all Christians sing, To hear the news the angels bring, News of great joy, news of great mirth, News of our merciful King’s birth.’ Mrs Verrall submitted to carol to a competition sponsored by the West Sussex Gazette in 1905. Later, Vaughan Williams took down the tune from Mrs Verrall and published it in 1912. Although a well-known composer in his own right, Vaughan Williams had a strong interest in folk-song and the traditional
10
of rural music making. He used a phonograph machine when he visited Harriet Verrall to record the traditional songs that she and her husband had collected and then sang to him. Another Christmas Carol from our area of the country is The Sussex Mummer’s Carol. Horsham tipteerers performed a mummer’s play in the 1880s, and at its end, they sang this carol: ‘O mortal men, remember well, when Christ our Lord was born, He was crucified betwixt two thieves and crowned with the thorn’. Lucy Broadwood, of Rusper, secretary of the Folk Song Society, noted the carol down and noted of the group of mummers ‘They clustered together, wooden swords in hand, at the close of their play St George And The Turk. and sang, wholly unconscious of the contrast between the solemnity of the carol, and the grotesqueness of their appearance; for they wore dresses of coloured calico, heavily trimmed with shreds of ribbon, gaudy paper fringes and odd ornaments.’ Another old Sussex Christmas song is noted down in ‘Jim Copper’s Song Book’. It’s verses vividly describe how hard life is for both people and animals on a Sussex farm in winter: ‘Tis now all the small birds to the barn door fly for food And gently they rest on the spray. A-down the plantation the hares do search for food, And lift their footsteps sure, Lift their footsteps sure for fear they do betray.’ It ends in a charming celebration of the festive season: ‘Now Christmas is come and our song is almost done For we soon shall have the turn of the year. So fill up your glasses and let your health go round, For I wish you all, For I wish you all a joyful New Year.’ Judy Upton

Winter preparations T HAT’S IT. WE’RE here already at the end of the year and hopefully ready for Christmas. The dark long nights and cold days are n us and to be honest I think that makes us all pretty much ready for the Christmas break. I always find it a real watershed time, not in terms of the new year, but as soon as that shortest day is past us, you can rapidly see the evidence of new life coming in the
12
garden. It’s not that long away, and so the cycle begins again! Not every day is suitable to be out in the garden, so try and find some jobs you can do, even if it is too wet or cold. A few small jobs done here and there, as always will make all the difference If you’re storing any bulbs or any crops, then make sure you regularly check them for any signs of rot. Make sure you get rid of any that are affected as soon as possible. The adage about one bad apple is very true and applies across the board to any stored bulb, fruit or vegetable. If you have any greens such as cabbages or sprouts growing, then to avoid disappointment for the Christmas table, get them covered with a net. They are a very attractive meal for our feathered friends. Any work you do on improving the soil now will be returned next year with improved crops. Digging the ground now also helps the frost to get in and break up the soil and kill off diseases. You can get next years’ crops under way as well, by planting out garlic and onions. It always gives me a good feeling to be looking ahead to next year. If you have a pond in the garden, then it’s essential to give it some attention now, before the cold days. Cut back any plants around the ponds that need attention, and try to avoid too much debris falling in the pond when you do it. The fish and other wildlife should be heading to the bottom by now to avoid the colder temperatures, so avoid disturbing them. It is well worth leaving a tennis ball or tow in the pond. This helps when the pond ices up, by preventing the oxygen supply falling, and helps to protect the liner from splitting. Now is a good time of year, now that you have cleared the garden, to have a good look back at what worked and what didn’t. If you are considering big or small changes then try to take the time to plan them out carefully. It gives you an excuse to stay in the warm as well. If the job is too big or ambitious, then it is always worth calling in a professional. We always find now is a good time of year as we can get a good view of the garden, and its also a good time to beat the spring rush. Well that just leaves me to say Happy Christmas to all of you, and I hope you all get what you wish for now and looking forward into the New Year! The 150-year history of Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat Station The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has just published a new book on Shoreham Lifeboat Station, which celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2015.
G
EORGE RAWLINSON, RNLI operations director said: “It takes a huge amount of effort and a lot of people behind the scenes to get a lifeboat to sea. The community of Shoreham has been totally committed to that effort. It is thanks to them and the stations supporters that so many lives have been saved by the station’s lifeboat crews. The station’s presence and commitment of its volunteers ensure the waters around Shoreham are a safer place than they otherwise would be.” Written by John Periam and Michelle Tugwell, with the support of past and present crew members; this new publication gives an exciting, and at times nostalgic history about the station’s last 150 years. From the early days of the horse drawn carriage lifeboats to the current state of the art Tamar lifeboat situated in its purpose built boathouse at Shoreham, you can read about the crews’ exploits both at sea and behind the scenes.
14
It also covers royal visits, fund-raising, family histories, the history of the different lifeboats station and the many life saving services over the years. Stunning images grace all the pages, many which have been enhanced from archive files, to current ones taken by Geoffrey Lee and other local photographers. Peter Huxtable MBE, Shoreham’s Lifeboat Operations Manager has had a long station history going back more than 40 years. He said: “I have watched the work on this book progress; it has been a challenge for all involved. It is also an honour for us to be one of the few selected stations out of the UK’s 237 to be asked to have its history published. “The lifeboat coxswain Steve Smith, the crew and myself hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did in compiling it.” Copies priced £8.95 will be available in the Shoreham Lifeboat Station souvenir shop, which is open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm and weekends 10am to 4pm and online by going to the station website www.shorehamlifeboat.co.uk All proceeds go to the RNLI. Plantar Fasciitis This month Louis Jones writes about the painful condition known as plantar fasciitis, which affects many people, specifically runners, pregnant women and people who spend a long time on their feet.
T
HE PLANTAR FASCIA is a band of soft tissue made up of tendons, running on the underside of the foot, which inserts into the heel. With trauma, or excess strain, the plantar fascia becomes inflamed and thickens, causing severe pain into the heel and inside arch of the foot. Symptoms usually worsen with time that it is left untreated. It is most noticeable on waking, after prolonged periods of rest, when the tendons have relaxed and shortened, followed by putting your weight to the ground and stretching the tendons. It is usually felt as a sharp pain, or a burning pain,
which eases with warmth and movement, but can worsen over time, with morning symptoms becoming more severe.
What causes Plantar Fasciitis?
1. Wearing unsupportive shoes. 2. Increasing weight-bearing activity too quickly. 3. Putting on increased weight. This condition is very common in pregnant women. 4. If you suffer with flat feet 5. If you have tight Achilles and calf muscles. 6. Spending a lot of time on your feet, for example it is common in Police officers.
How can Plantar Fasciitis be treated?
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG
16
If you identify the problem early enough, it is important not to ignore the symptoms, as they can worsen over time and it can become much harder to treat further down the line. Early treatment includes: 1. Massaging the area 2. Stretching the muscles of the underside of the foot 3. Using icepacks 4. Using anti-inflammatory gels 5. Using sports taping 6. Adding support to your footwear, for example an orthotic or changing footwear If you have been suffering with this condition for more than 2 weeks or if your symptoms worsen or do not improve from following the above steps you should see a physiotherapist. Treatment would include: 1. Deep tissue massage 2. Myofascial release 3. Ultrasound 4. Possible acupuncture 5. Prescribed exercises In worse case scenarios, a specialist can administer a cortico-steroid injection, which can be extremely effective at reducing pain and helping overcome this condition. After, it is still important to identify factors that could cause this condition, so that this injury can be avoided in future. Big Heart charity art auction S USSEX’S ARTS CALENDAR will be bolstered by a brand new event next year as Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and Brighton Dome join forces to host the Big Heart charity art auction in March. The very first Big Heart auction will include over 200 donated artworks from local, national and celebrity artists, illustrators and photographers including artworks from Raymond Briggs – illustrator of the much-loved The Snowman and Patron of Chestnut Tree House – Dan Baldwin, Jake WoodEvans, Dion Salvador Lloyd, Pippa Blake, Gary Goodman, Natalie Papmichael and Phillipa Cannan. Each piece of art will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going to towards supporting both Chestnut Tree House – which cares for over 300 terminally ill children in Sussex and South East Hampshire - and Brighton Dome; itself a registered charity committed to providing a groundbreaking arts programme that touches and enriches thousands of lives. An online gallery - showcasing all participating Big Heart artists and artworks - will be available to view from January 2015. The auction will then go live on eBay for Charity from Thursday 26 February to Sunday 8 March. Alongside the online gallery, Brighton Dome will play host to a public Big Heart exhibition from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 March. The exhibition is free to enter and will be an opportunity to see first hand artworks from a wide range of artists. The partnership builds on the collaborative work already begun between the organisations through the Umbrella Club, Brighton Dome’s membership club for children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their siblings and carers. Liz Ganney, Head of Fundraising Development at Chestnut Tree House, said “We are very excited about our first Big Heart auction. This is a great opportunity to snap up a unique piece of art whilst helping to raise vital funds so Chestnut Tree House can care for local

life-limited children and their families across Sussex.” June Frickleton, Big Heart curator and art expert said “The artist community in Sussex have been amazing. We’ll have a wide range of high quality artwork available and hope to appeal to all tastes. In addition to our fabulous local artists we hope to have a few artworks from celebrities and big names from the art world. We know artists are a very generous bunch and we have been just delighted by the support we have been offered. It’s going to be a really unique auction for a very worthy local cause.” Andrew Comben, Chief Executive of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival said: “We are delighted to be working with Chestnut Tree House on the inaugural Big Heart charity auction. The project not only enables us to build on our partnership work with Chestnut Tree House through the Umbrella Club; Brighton Dome’s membership club for children and young people with lifelimiting conditions and their siblings and carers, but also to showcase and support the work of the local artistic community who have generously donated to the auction.” ECE Architecture, an award-winning Sussex based architectural firm, is the headline sponsor for the first Big Heart auction.
Tony Clark, Chairman of ECE Architecture said, “As supporters of Chestnut Tree House for many years, when we were asked to be the headline sponsor for the very first Big Heart auction we did not hesitate. There is a natural affinity between art and architecture and we are delighted to be involved with the Sussex arts community who have generously donated pieces for the auction. All at ECE are looking forward to making the auction a memorable success.” Other supporters include, the online organic cosmetic producers, Green People and Brighton Sushi restaurant Moshimo, who will be supporting the gala event that closes the exhibition. Brighton design agency, Designate, have donated their creative time and devised the Big Heart brand materials. Over the next few months, artistes and celebrities performing at Brighton Dome will be given a special artists’ pack, kindly devised and donated by Lawrence Art Supplies based in Hove, and asked to create their very own masterpiece for inclusion in the Big Heart auction. Chestnut Tree House and Brighton Dome would love to hear from any professional artists who would like to take part in this exciting new fundraising campaign. Festive Frazzles?
A
H, CHRISTMAS IS here again, the yuletide spirit is with us and everyone is full of joy and cheer!! Or are we? Sometimes it means strains and injuries as we rush to get everything done, not paying attention to how we move, and on top of everything, there’s the mental stress. The team at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre offer some advice on how to make your Christmas this year less frazzled and fraught, and help you keep physically and mentally pain-free!
BE PREPARED…
Picture yourself sitting on the floor with the presents, wrapping
Let us help you find relief from: Back pain, Neck pain Shoulder pain, Knee pain Sports injuries Postural strains Stress-related pain And more… Our caring, qualified and experienced team offer Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports and Remedial Massage, Hypnotherapy, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, 1-1 Pilates sessions Book an appointment (£5 off with this ad) or pop in for a free consultation in our calm and welcoming space, right in the heart of beautiful Shoreham

paper, scissors and tape, all ready to blitz the wrapping. Think again! This is probably the worst position for your spine, all bent over, feeling the ache and burn. Instead, sit at the dining room table, or use your ironing board at a comfortable level and stand upright to tackle the task. Does carrying all those shopping bags put a strain on your back? Make sure you carry roughly equal weights on each side to distribute the weight. Be aware of your wrists and elbows too, which can be strained if those bags are too heavy. Make sure you have regular breaks and keep hydrated — a good excuse for a coffee break! Wear comfortable shoes when shopping and think about a lighter-weight handbag. Consider a backpack. All the usual suspect activities such as decorating the tree, putting lights up around the house, carrying heavy packages, cleaning and cooking will involve the inevitable bending and lifting. Just be mindful of the 'BEND, LIFT and TWIST' movement, in that order. Don’t do all three together! Use your legs to take the weight and keep loads/ parcels/bags close to your body. Walk around to get a better position, square to the load, rather than twist, especially if you are repeatedly twisting. Many of us visit friends and family over Christmas and that often involves long journeys. Check your seating position in the car. Your hips should be level or higher than your knees to enable a neutral spine position. A wedge cushion on your seat can be helpful. Or a small rolled-up towel in the small of your back can maintain that natural inward curve. Don't forget to be careful loading the car in the first place! And after any long journey, it's a good idea to go for a walk to allow your body and spine to de-stress.
JUST BREATHE…
One of the best ways to deal with this increasingly manic season is to find a way to de-stress and keep calm as you prepare — simply not rushing can help you avoid some of the hazards above. Do you feel the agitation building as you are standing in queues in crowded shops, panicking about what to get whom, how to feed and keep everyone happy? Taking a few deep breaths is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to lower your heart rate and level of stress, and yet, incredibly, we so often forget to breathe properly, so reducing oxygen supply to our muscles and brains. Try taking a few moments to breathe in through your nose for three counts — don’t gasp or snatch at the air, think of slowly expanding your lungs and ribcage, and keep your shoulders and neck relaxed. You will feel your belly slightly protrude as the lungs fill with air and push your diaphragm down. Now breathe out slowly for four-five counts, relaxing all your muscles in your body and feeling the stress flow out of you. Repeat at least three times and see if you are feeling a little calmer… An aromatherapy massage or reflexology session might well be the answer to providing some much-needed dedicated “you” time when it feels like you’re overloaded with thinking about everyone else. For even more deep relaxation and long-term help with anxiety or stress, a hypnotherapy session may be very beneficial. You can then return to the fray in better physical and mental shape than ever. We hope you have a wonderful festive season — keep active, keep calm and keep warm!!
