JULY 2010
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Welcome the July edition of the Inside Shoreham Magazine. I hope that everyone who took part in any of the shows and festivals through June had a fantastic time. It was great to see so many families enjoying some exceptional weather and great entertainment around Shoreham Beach, Shoreham Town centre and on Southwick Green over the last few weeks. I have tried to locate some great events for you to get out and about in July. Once such upcoming event which sounds quite amazing is KaraOrche, which is the world’s 1st Live Orchestra Karaoke, you can read more about this great event on page 4. If that doesn’t interest you, then there is the Worthing Carnival or how about Splash FM Garden Party on the 16th & 17th July. The What’s On pages is always full of the latest productions at the Ropetackle, we also list local club activities and social clubs and much much more.
In this months issue we have some information and advice about disability in West Sussex and you can find out about how from the West Sussex Association for Disabled people. If you suffer from arthritis then Shoreham & Southwick Osteopaths may be able to offer you help, read more about this on page 22. With all the rise in utility bills over the past few years, conserving and saving money on energy bills is always a popular subject and local specialists, Quake Energy, have some advice on how you can save money as well as take advantage of grants that are available. If you have anything happening in the local community let us know and we’ll endeavour to get it onto the magazine. The deadline is the 12th of July for August edition. Have a great July, and we will see you in August. Angela

ara-orChe is The world’s first live-orchestra karaoke event. Taking place in Summer 2010 in Worthing, West Sussex, it will feature the National Symphony Orchestra and a cast of thousands. Imagine over three thousand people in a seafront park - singing the classics of karaoke, following the words on giant screens but instead of the usual backing track, there’s a live 32-piece orchestra! 4Below Productions, a local community arts organisation, has teamed up with the National Symphony Orchestra of London to bring this landmark event to life right here in Worthing. The main aim of Kara-Orche is to re-engage people with live orchestral music, in a fun manner that most people are comfortable with. It will also promote community singing and inclusion, as well as promoting the health benefits of singing (it’s very good for your heart!). The playlist will feature a mix of popular songs, anthems and some classical music, for example: • I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
4
Flower Festival and Village Fête T
• Angels (Robbie Williams) • Land of Hope and Glory (Elgar) • Nessun Dorma (Puccini) Many of the pieces have been especially commissioned as orchestral versions just for this event. Jonathan Nulty, Creative Director of 4Below, said “This will help put Worthing back on the map in terms of arts and culture – there’s a wealth of talent here, just waiting to be discovered” Anne Collis, Director of the NSO said “KaraOrche is a new concept – it takes a mix of Proms in the Park with classic karaoke. There’s something for everyone.” By singing along on the night, you’ll also be doing your heart a favour – 4Below is helping to promote the “sing for your heart” campaign run by Heart Research UK. The event will take place on Sunday 18th July 2010 at 7:30pm in Steyne Gardens, Worthing. It is a ticketed event, but if you buy a Combi-ticket for the Splash FM Garden Party 2010, you will receive a free ticket to KaraOrche. Limited tickets are also available through 4Below.

Give a dog a dinner! D
ogs Trust Shoreham is appealing for tinned food for its four-legged residents Staff at Dogs Trust Shoreham are appealing for tinned food for their 70 four-legged residents currently in their care, but not just the normal tinned dog food. They are desperate for fresh, frozen or tinned fish, meat, fruit or vegetables. Centre manager, Tracey Rae, says: “For the dogs in our care, having a yummy meal is very important for their emotional well-being. Like us humans, eating tasty food makes them feel much better so we try to vary 6
their diets as much as possible. The public are always wonderful with their donations of tinned food, but very few people are aware that we like to
give our dogs fish, meat, vegetables and fruit. Any donations would be extremely welcome and much needed! If you would like to cheer up a homeless hound and take them a tasty treat, please pop into the rehoming centre at Brighton Road, Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex with your donations. However, the staff have asked that should anyone be kind enough to donate anything fresh or frozen, that they contact the centre on 01273 452576 to ensure that there is enough fridge or freezer storage space for their donations. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
Mortgages for the Self Employed i
f You are self employed and looking for a mortgage, times could be tricky. Previously you could fall back on self certification mortgages, but as these have disappeared from the market you could find things much more difficult. Now income has to be proved, which puts you in a totally different situation to before. So, what do lenders look for from self employed people? When you are self employed your accountant will always try and minimise your income, meaning less tax to pay. This is fine, but now you have to prove your income to get a mortgage this can seriously impede the amount you can borrow.
When you are self employed your accountant will always try and minimise your income…but this can seriously impede the amount you can borrow.
There are a couple of lenders who will use your profit figures, and your salary, but if we are to approach those lenders, you would need to fit all of their lending criteria, which may not be the case. Also, these may be the lenders who don’t offer the best rates for your situation.
In essence, if you are a self employed person, some prior planning before your accounts are finalised can make all the difference. If you would like to discuss this with me, to see where you stand, please feel free to call me, Claire Cook, on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. Buy to let mortgages are not regulated by the Finanicial Services Authority. Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd, which is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. If you prefer to pay a fee for advice this option is available, the exact amount of the fee will depend on circumstances but we estimate it will be 0.5% of the loan amount. Where a rate is quoted the rate will depend on individual circumstances and not all borrowers will qualify for acceptance of the loan (or similar).Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
Sole traders and partnerships If you are a sole trader your net profit will be used as income. Some lenders will use the average of the last two or three years, some will use the most recent year’s figure if this is the highest. Some people think lenders will use the gross income figures, the actual income into your company. This is not the case, the lenders will use the net income, ie the income after expenses, the amount you pay tax on. This is the figure you would normally try to minimise. If you are trading as a partnership, the lender will use your percentage share of the net profit figures.
Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
What about Limited Companies? Some individuals trade as a Limited Company which can be very tax efficient. Income is normally taken as a small salary, plus dividends. Most people in this situation just take what they need, which makes sense. They don’t take all of the profit from the company as income, they leave it there. This is fine, and makes sense, but most lenders don’t take a very flexible view on this. Most will take literally only the money you have taken from the company as income, ie the salary and dividends. So, if your company has made thousands but you left it in the company, this will not be taken as income. So, if you are working in this way, and you know you may be looking for a mortgage soon, it might be worth speaking to a financial adviser such as myself to chat things through. In current times, it may be worth planning how you take your income from your company. Once you are clear how lenders will view your situation, you can turn to your accountant for advice. 8

Once you have reported the problem, you should be kept informed of progress in your case.
Reporting anti-social behaviour
Help stamp out Anti-Social Behaviour O
PERATION RESPECT WiLL be running throughout the summer. It is a dedicated team of police officers and PCSOs who patrol at weekends across Adur and address anti-social behaviour.
What is anti- social behaviour? Anti-social behaviour includesd things like; • Rowdy, noisy behaviour in otherwise quite nieghbourhoods • Night time noise from houses or gardens especially between 11:00pm and 7:00am • Threatening, drunken or “yobbish” behaviour • Vandalism, grafitti and fly posting • Dealing or buying drugs on the street • Litter and fly tipping rubbish • Drinking in the street • Setting off fireworks late at night • Abandoning cars on the street. Anti-social behaviour doesn't just make life unpleasant. It can ruin lives and make whole areas feel unsafe.
10
If you encounter it, report it • You can talk to your nieghbours to see if they are affected as well. • If you feel comfortable doing so talk to the person causing the problem, they may not realise how it is affecting you • Report it to your local councils antisocial coordinator • Call your police force non-emergency number • Tell your landlord or residents association about the situation. • Contact your local nieghbourhood policing team, or attend one of their regular meetings. No matter how you report anti-social behaviour, all complaints are treated as confidential. So you don’t have to worry about your identity being revealed. The council and police both need evidence of what's happened to you, so keep a note of problems. They should not ask you to do this indefinitely.
If you’re faced with noisy neighbours, or you’ve seen someone littering, drawing graffiti, or committing other acts of anti-social behaviour, you shouldn’t suffer in silence. The first step is to speak to members of your local neighbourhood policing team. Those teams work closely with residents to help stop anti-social behaviour, so they need to know what's happening in your area. They can provide support and advice, and help you decide how to handle the situation. If the anti-social behaviour is affecting your quality of life, or making you fear for your safety or the safety of others, contact your local police station directly. Staff working there will help you file a complaint.
Gathering evidence When police are made aware of anti-social behaviour, they’ll ask you to log the behaviour, and to keep them informed of what’s happening. They need to have enough evidence about what’s going on to take legal action against the people causing the problems. Any police action will depend upon the circumstances and how serious the problem is. If the problem is noise-related, your local council could become involved, as councils, rather than police, often deal with noise problems. Once you've got your log of information about what’s been happening, you can take it to the police and your local council. They should take action to punish the people who have been behaving aggressively or destructively.
If you are experiencing any problems or would like advice please contact; mAnti- social behaviour hotline; 01273 263356. Adur council website, community safety site. Sussex police, 0845 60 70 999.

How WSAD can help you L
ooking for information and advice about disability in West Sussex? Many disabled people and their families are not always sure where to go to find information about specialist equipment, leisure activities and other available services. West Sussex Association for Disabled 12
People (WSAD) is a local charity which works across the county to provide a number of different services for disabled people and those who support them. It’s useful to know about their Information and Advice service, which is open 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday throughout the year.
Through this, WSAD is able to point you in the right direction and provide you with the help and support you’re entitled to. They also run a second hand disability equipment sales service, AskDES, which offers you the chance to buy and sell specialist disability equipment, from
scooters to portable ramps, at an affordable price. It’s a really popular service, used by people throughout the county. Recently, WSAD even heard of a man selling a scooter through AskDES who’d had enquiries from people in Dublin and Scotland. Log on to www. askdes.org.uk to find out more. WSAD runs social groups throughout West Sussex, with activities from tea and chat groups to day trips out. There is always room for more members – so contact WSAD and they’ll put you in touch with your local group. What’s more - two Access Groups, based in Arun and Chichester work within their local area to promote disability equality and provide advice about accessibility issues.
To contact WSAD for more information about any of their services, call 01903 244 457 or email info@ wsad.org.uk. You can also pop into the offices at 7 St John’s Parade, Alinora Crescent, Goring-by-Sea, BN12 4HJ. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Truleigh Hill Radar Station T
ruLeigh hiLL raDar Station was a Chain Home Low radar station built in 1939. From the beginning of World War Two it formed an important part of a chain of radar stations that ringed Britain to give early warning of approaching enemy aircraft. It was one of the first stations with this new improved form or radar. Only a few years previously the earlier Chain Home radar system still had problems detecting approaching planes if they were low flying. Early in World War Two a German plane could fly to within 80 miles of the British Coast before being detected. The station at Truleigh became operational in 1940. The radar aerial was originally a single rotating combined receiver and transmitter that was updated later in the war. Six aerial masts were added in 1942 when transmission and receiver blocks were also constructed. Stations like Truleigh were capable of detecting low-level targets to 300 feet. CHL radar gave sufficient early warning of large formations of planes such as in the Battle of Britain, but single planes engaged in smaller bombing raids could still evade detection by flying at below 100 feet. This meant hit and run raids could still get through. The Truleigh Hill radar station was linked to a number of giant pylons around Poling, south of the A27, between Worthing and Arundel. Because during wartime the purpose of these pylons was kept secret, stories grew up that they projected a death ray, which would stop the engines of enemy planes. In fact they were part of the radar chain of links between Truleigh and the other radar stations around the coast. During World War 2 there were only a few RAF personnel at Truleigh and they were billeted with local families, though their work was secretive. People generally believed that the base was for spotting aircraft, but only the service personnel who worked with radar at this time knew its real capabilities. A wired perimeter fence with four medium machine guns and two 2-pounder anti-tank guns manned
14
by an infantry unit defended the site. After the war another modernisation gave the station equipment able to detect much lower flying planes. In 1952 the underground part of the station was constructed with an operations room cut into the chalk. The numbers of personnel at Truleigh began to rise. A domestic site for them was built between Buci Crescent and Stoney Lane. The increased importance of the radar station was due to the beginning of the Cold War with Russia. Now, forty feet beneath Downs were not only a bunker but also a network of tunnels with ten-foot thick walls able to survive a nuclear explosion. At this time nuclear bombs could only be transported by plane and if a Soviet attack happened, this would have been the method used. In the 1950s the station was part of the new ROTOR advanced detection system. A ROTOR station generally consisted of an ordinary looking bungalow, so as not to attract undue attention. At Truleigh Hill, the brick-built bungalow even had a veranda and was designed to appear to be typical British farmhouse. It was in fact a guardroom and it contained the concealed entrance to the nuclear bunker forty feet down a stairway below. Then as now the
numerous aerials and perimeter fence meant that at close proximity people could see this was not in fact a farm. A standby set house for the station was built at New Erringham Farm, though this later became a residential address. The domestic quarters off of Buci Crescent were demolished and the area redeveloped in the 1960s. The Truleigh Hill Station was decommissioned in 1958 and in 1965 it was sold to a private buyer. The site is still notable for its radio masts, now belonging to landline and mobile phone companies and the emergency services. The guardhouse that masqueraded as a bungalow remains, as does a concrete construction that was once the base for one of the 240-foot wooden receiver towers. The underground facility is currently let to private contractors for storage, A building to the east of the site which is now a barn includes the old blast wall that was built to protect the transmitter block, and to the north of this is a direction-finding fixer tower with an underground entrance. A ventilation tower serving the tunnels can still be seen along the perimeter fence. The site is still today not accessible to the public and still retains its air of mystery and intrigue. Summer season W
eLCome To This month's gardening column. Now that summer is here I will hopefully provide you with both the inspiration and know-how to help you get the most from your garden and perhaps try something new as well. At this time of year the garden is thriving and it is a joy to be out and about in, whether it be during the daytime or after a hard days work relaxing in or pottering about in during the evening. I always feel the garden takes on an almost magical feel in the evening when birdsong is all around and signs of nature are easier to spot as the temperature lowers. This makes it a good time to carry out certain tasks. It’s always a good time to get some watering done as the evaporation will be less and therefore the watering will be more effective. It also brings out some of the pests such as snails and slugs, which can be easily picked off and disposed of. Ill leave it to you how you get rid of them, but don’t throw them over the neighbours garden, they’ll only come back of their own volition (If your neighbour doesn’t throw them back first!). Any job in the garden is made easier if it’s broken down into small achievable areas, so why not aim to weed or deadhead a small section in an evening, with a fork in one hand and a glass of wine in the other! That way you’ll feel like you
16
are getting somewhere, whilst getting enjoyment from it as well. The other magical thing about a garden is the difference in the smells in the evening. Different plants are more noticeable in the evening as they use their scent to attract insects. A great example of this is the climber Honeysuckle, as well as many roses and jasmine. It can transform the feel of the garden and make it a wonderful place to sit at night. They can be used to great affect in an area you use for evening dining or relaxing. Whilst we are on the subject of smells, at this time of year the garden will be producing plenty of waste, so make the best of it to produce your own compost. This can easily be done in homemade containers or shop bought ones (homemade generally yield the best results). I plan to do a feature on this later in the year, but the bigger the range of green, uncooked materials you can put in the bin the better. Try to give it a mix around on a regular basis and don’t swamp it with large layers of material, especially grass cuttings. These will just suffocate it and produce the bad smell, which puts people off of composting. If fruit flies become too much, then a layer of matured compost to cap off the bin will keep them at bay. Whatever you do in the garden at this time of year, stop and take the
time to enjoy it. It’s why you put the hard work in. Every day it changes so take the time to admire it. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Translated from the French by Christopher Hampton, this play has won awards on both sides of the channel, and is set in Paris. It is the story of Serge, Marc and Yvan, who suddenly find their previously solid 15-year friendship on shaky ground when Serge spends a huge sum on an extraordinary piece of art. The canvas
is white, with a few white lines. Serge (played by Rols Ham-Riche) is a dermatologist, proud of the success he has had in life. Delighted with his 200,000 franc acquisition, he fully expects his friends to approve. However, Marc (Mark Best), an aeronautical engineer, hates modernism, and can’t find anything good to say about it. But is it the painting that offends him, or the fact that Serge has made the purchase without asking his advice. For the insecure Yvan (Ryan Lainchbury), worried about his upcoming wedding and hating his job as a stationery salesman, the friendship provides an escape from his problems. Sadly, his attempts at making peace are doomed. He ends up becoming involved in the quarrel, which gets more and more personal. Will their relationship survive? The play will be performed in the round, bringing the action up close and personal. Director is John Garland. To advertise call: 01273 452065

All new installations are surveyed prior to installation with boiler and radiator positions agreed with the client. Customer satisfaction forms will be left with clients to ensure our high standards of installation and customer service are maintained. To advertise call: 01273 452065
LOFT INSULATION According to current Building Regulations, the recommended depth for loft insulation is now 270mm (10 inches) which means that in addition to those homes with no insulation, there are many homes which have a thin layer of insulation which should be topped up, the water tanks and pipe work should also be insulated to meet current standards. There has never been as good a time to invest in cavity wall/loft insulation as now. Full or partial grants are available to all homeowners which means that for those householders who do not qualify for a full grant the cost to undertake either cavity or loft insulation could be as little as £199. Advice about the availability of grants is available from Quake customer service department or from any of its surveyors. As with all of our services, Quake provides a free, no obligation survey and quotation for your property.
SOLAR HOT WATER
With a field force of over 40 qualified gas/oil and electrical engineers we can cover the needs of the South East for a wide range of heating services, with a common commitment to quality, safety and customer service.
INSULATION Did you know that over 50% of the heat loss in your home is lost through the walls and roof? Cavity wall and loft insulation, therefore, is a fantastic way to significantly reduce the amount of energy required to heat your home and reduce your fuel bills. Typically, the savings in your heating bill from having cavity wall insulation and a fully insulated loft could be over £250 per year. Just as important is the fact that cavity wall/loft insulation allows your house to also remain cooler in the summer.
CAVITY WALL INSULATION If your home was built from between 1920 through 1980, the chances are that its external walls are made of two layers with a small gap or ‘cavity’ between them. This means they are ‘cavity walls’. To insulate your cavity walls, the installer drills small holes (around 22mm in size) at specific intervals of around the outside of your home. Then with specially designed equipment, the insulation is then blown into the cavity. Once all the insulation is in, the installer fills the holes in the brickwork with matching mortar so you’ll barely notice them. All insulation fitters are trained by the manufacturers of the materials to ensure compliance with the latest technical specifications as defined by the British Board of Agrement and all cavity wall jobs are guaranteed for 25 years.

Solar heating can save you 40% on your hot water heating costs per annum and add significant value to your home. All Quake systems are compatible with all conventional heating systems for domestic applications. A solar hot water system uses the Sun’s free energy to heat domestic water for your household requirements, saving fuel, money and carbon dioxide emissions. A solar hot water system comprises two parts – solar thermal panels, called collectors, and a hot water cylinder. The solar thermal panels collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in the hot water cylinder. Ask Quake about the availability of grant funding for your solar thermal system. For a free technical no obligation quotation, please call freephone on 0800 085 1316, email us at advice@quakeenergy.co.uk, or simply visit www.quakeenergy.co.uk

Arthritis T
here are manY different types of arthritis, the 2 most common types being rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis causes inammation affecting many joints, (often the knuckle joints), causing swelling and pain. In the past, this could lead to great debility, but with modern drugs it is now more easily controlled. Osteoarthritis is broadly due to wear and tear in joints and consequently it tends to be found in weight bearing
22
joints such as the knee, hip and spine. It is very common and nearly everyone has signs of it on X-ray as they age, though not all of us will suffer any symptoms. Early osteoarthritis in the knee or hip can respond well to osteopathic treatment, exercises and medication. If it becomes worse, replacement joints are usually very satisfactory. Osteoarthritis of the spine (spondylosis) is particularly common in the lower back and neck and, of
course, the spine cannot be replaced. However as the spine is made up of several adjoining joints, a badly affected joint can shift some of its load onto the next joint. In the spine the amount of osteoarthritis seen on x-ray is poorly correlated to the pain felt by the individual, and for this reason, and to avoid radiation, we seldom X-ray the spine. It seems that more pain is produced by the lack of function as the spine becomes stiff, and as people tend to rest if they have pain, the spine becomes stiffer, the pain worse and a vicious circle is formed. Osteopathic treatment is designed to encourage the joints to resume their functional capacity, and we treat the lack of function and not the arthritis. With a combination of massage, stretching of the joints and exercise, much of the pain and disability associated with osteoarthritis can often be overcome. If you would like to talk to one of our osteopaths about your problem, you are welcome to attend for a 10 minute free consultation without any obligation to attend for further treatment.
