Feeling Good at Feel Good Factor F
eeling really good inside? These days it seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month. Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist. She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know
more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly. “You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

JULY 2011
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello Welcome to the July edition of The Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine Well June certainly was a wet month and all my plans to get things done in the garden didn’t happen. Saying that, it’s been great for the grass and plants which were suffering. On that note Mark has the latest tips on gardening at this time of year which might just come into full bloom should that nice summer we have been promised, materialise. We also have the latest read from Judy Upton which I know you enjoy so much. It is great to have so much history in this area and so many fascinating individuals of the past. Look out for the different fetes and festivals happening in and around Shoreham and Southwick. You will find any of these
events listed in the What’s On Section or in the magazine. This month we have some more new local businesses. You may already use them or may have heard of them and if not then our directory certainly gives you the chance to connect up with local people and their local businesses. Why go anywhere else when there is so much in Shoreham and Southwick! On that note, I wish you a fabulous month full of the sunny days and we will see you in August. As always, please do write, email us events support charities or local groups. We would be happy to put it in the magazine. The dead line for the August edition is the 12th of July.. Until then, Angela

More flying displays at the 2011 RAFA Shoreham Airshow E ach year Don Bean MBE Shoreham Airshow Organiser supported by his trusty team of volunteers tries to come up with ideas that will make the show better than the year before; not an easy task in the current economic climate. The team have booked aircraft that will take the flying into almost six hours of non-stop entertainment. The Royal Air Force will be sending their Hawk solo display flown by Flt Lt Juliette Fleming, the force’s first female solo display pilot. She will be joined by the Tucano and Tutor solo displays as well as an array of classic jets including the Hawker Hunter, Folland Gnat and De Havilland Vampire. We are also hopeful of having the Red Arrows fly through during the show. The show will have the cream of the military parachute teams with the Parachute Regiment Red Devils and the RAF Falcons jumping which is always popular with the spectators. There will be an opportunity to see what it like to jump by visiting the Red Devils stand on the large ground attraction site. Adding some colour to the flying display will be an array of top civilian display teams. They will have a fourship from the Breitling Wingwalkers, the four Extra 300LPs from The Blades and the Yakovlevs flying their Russian aerobatic aircraft in close formation. The Glider FX Team will be there as will the SWIP Team both of which will amaze with some very spectacular flying. Justyn Gorman will be putting his Extra aircraft through some stunning gyroscopic aerobatics too and has been training hard over the winter to present
Gallery's new premises From the beginning of July, Shoreham Gallery can be found at their new premises at 27 Brunswick Road, Shoreham (just near the train station). Run by a dedicated group of local artists on a co-operative basis, they offer a wide collection of unique work. On the 23rd July there will be a celebration to launch their new premises. There will be drinks, nibbles, a raffle to win a £50 voucher to spend at the gallery, live music and a mystery guest. Art at the heart of the community. www.shorehamgallery.co.uk 4
something a little different. Talking of different, O’Brien’s Flying Circus is making its first appearance at the show. Brendan O’Brien is the master of aerial antics all has promised some exciting surprises to his act! Warbirds are always a popular feature of the Shoreham Airshow. Peter Teichman will be bringing his popular Hurricane and his newly refurbished Spitfire XI which starred in the recent BBC2 documentary 'Operation Crossbow.' The popular airfield attack and scramble will once again be the highlight of the show with ground lookalikes supported by pyrotechnics filling the air with Spitfires and Hurricanes chasing of the German ME 109’s. The Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will also return with their Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane while the United States Army Air Force will be represented by Shoreham favourite, the B-17G Flying Fortress 'Sally-B'. Going further back into aviation history, the Great War Display Team return with eight aircraft simulating what it was like flying in action of the muddy battlefields of the Somme. The main theme this year will be the 70th Anniversary of Search and Rescue and the RAF will be sending down yellow Westland Sea King helicopters; one from the Search and Rescue Force’s HQ at RAF Valley and the other from 22 Squadron at RAF Wattisham in Suffolk. One will be on static display alongside the RAF Chinook from Odhiam and the other will be displaying with
the Shoreham Lifeboat Crew doing a simulated rescue. The Consolidated PBY Catalina Flying boat will be in the air and on the ground – this aircraft was a workhorse in the Search and Rescue role during the Second World War. Christian Moullec is back from France with his Microlight and Geese.. If its ground attractions you want we have the children’s circus, fun fair, and craft tent along with many trade stands. There is even an opportunity to meet the pilots and some celebrity guests at the RAFA and RNLI Stands as well as lookalikes and Dads Army and Haurel and Lardy. It's and exciting year, and to make up for the bad weather of 2010, the entry prices are the same as 2009. Tickets are now available by calling the Ticket Hotline 01903 282354 or

Flower festival and village fete The Annual St. Nicolas Flower Festival and Village Fete is being held on Saturday, July 16th. from 2pm-4.30pm at St. Nicolas Church near the Red Lion Inn, Shoreham. The theme this year is "Country Gardens" and the flower displays in the church will reflect this. The fete will be in the "country garden" of the Old Shoreham Farmhouse nearby. In addition to the usual stalls (bric-a-brac, cakes, plants, toys, tombola, etc.) cream teas and refreshments will also be available. Gennaro Fiondella will be providing music in the garden. Half the proceeds will go to help with the upkeep of St. Nicolas Church and half to our chosen charity: West Sussex Association for Disabled People (Shoreham and Southwick Group). Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Finances – making sense of it all
M
any people wait until a life changing time to see someone like me, for example when they want to move house, or are about to retire. I would happily see you at these times and help out, but often it is wise to make a review when these things are not occurring just to make sure you are in the right place with your finances. It can make a huge difference over a lifetime. Recently many people have been reviewing their pensions. I understand that the statements are easy to tuck away, and most are in language many would not understand, but this is your invested money. A pension review can have a real impact on your retirement income. Often people have several plans which have accumulated over the years. The good thing is that I am able to deal with your pension companies on your behalf, obtaining information and comparing your plans with the ones now available. You could be paying high charges, or languishing in funds which are not performing.
Why pay for something which you don’t actually need? At Talk Money we review your funds on an ongoing basis, it’s all part of the service. We also make sure that the risk you are taking is in line with your requirements, this is also monitored for you. All of this ensures that your money will be looked after from the point we arrange a pension for you. If you have investments, the story could be the same. With good intentions you could have invested in a stocks & shares ISA. How is this performing? Has it been reviewed and are you making the most of your tax free investments? Currently you can invest up to £10,680 in a stocks & shares ISA per financial year, many people don’t use this allowance. ISAs are a great way to save for your future as all growth is tax free. Again we can make sure you are invested in the right funds, and review this for you as an ongoing service. Once your finances are in place you can review the values and performance on our online client system, Enable. The system keeps you in touch with your money and allows you access to information and values at all times, for all your plans and in one place.
What about my other plans? All of your financial products can be reviewed to make sure you are getting the best for your money. You may have direct debits for life or protection policies where you are unsure what the 6
plan covers. This can all be clarified for you. You could be paying for something which is no longer relevant to your situation, or if you arranged the policy directly you could be overpaying. Why pay for something which you don’t actually need?
What to do? If you would like a simple, independent review of things, please give me a call. I can arrange to see you at home if you need. I am also offering a free initial consultation to Latest Homes readers. My telephone number is 01403 330822. I would be very happy to help. Looking after the garden W
ell at least were not officially in a drought yet and there doesn’t appear to be a hosepipe ban looming. So enjoy the weather and keep watering, but do try and be as sparing as possible with it and don’t forget to try some of the suggestions I made last month. This really is a fantastic time of year when all the plants, fruit and vegetables are racing away, through a combination of warm weather and long daylight hours. By the time you read this, we will have passed the longest day and little by little the daylight hours that the plants depend on are diminishing. Sorry to sound gloomy but it’s true! Take time to make the most of the garden whilst the garden is in full swing. There are several jobs you can do around the garden to get more out of the plants and make them last that bit longer. Plants basically grow to produce more offspring, so as soon as flowers start to die off they go into the seed producing stage. Keep making them produce flowers by regularly removing any blooms that have started to look past their best. Many plants especially those in pots and baskets will benefit from a feed, either in tablet form, or as a liquid feed, which gets to work much quicker. These are available in a number of different forms and are simply mixed in with water in the watering can. The vegetable gardens should be thriving by now, with the first crops of summer starting to come to fruition. We have been picking strawberries for a few weeks, and even had our first premature 8
new potatoes. With many vegetables there is actually a short spell when the produce is good for picking. If you miss it then that’s it for another year. A good example of this is peas. Leave it a few days too late to pick them and you will be disappointed. Pick them at the right time and the flavour is wonderful. The advice with deadheading flowers holds true with vegetables. Keep on picking them regularly and they will produce more. The advice for flowers with regards a boost from liquid fertilisers also holds true for vegetables. Most will benefit from a watering of a mixture of this, producing more and larger fruit. There is still plenty of time to sow many vegetables for later summer and autumn harvests, as well as looking forward to sowing seeds now that will bring in fresh vegetables during the late winter and early spring. As always salads are popular for summer dishes and regular sowings every few weeks will ensure that you have a bountiful supply throughout the summer. Even if you have only a couple of spare pots, you can grow enough in these, alternating when you plant in each one to keep salad on the table. They are great for children to grow as they can see quick results and enjoy giving them haircuts on a regular basis, especially if you plant them in smiley face patterns. Many of the large diy stores stock salad seeds for as little as 40 pence a packet so it’s well worth giving it a try. At this time of year there really is no
excuse not to be out in the garden on the long summer evenings, and if you even spend a few minutes each evening whilst out there doing a few jobs you really will keep the garden looking better for longer, so give it a go and enjoy it. Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Neighbourhood Policing NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Neighbourhood Watch gives people the confidence to get together to say no to crime. We are not having it down our street! We don't want it here! In Sussex, Neighbourhood Watch has the following main objectives: • To prevent crime: By improving security, increasing vigilance, creating, and maintaining a caring community, and reducing opportunities for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness. • To assist the Police in detecting crime: By promoting effective communication and the prompt reporting of suspicious and criminal activity. • To reduce the fear of crime: By providing accurate information about risks, and by promoting a sense of security and community spirit, particularly amongst the more vulnerable. • To improve police/community liaison: By providing effective means to notify Co-ordinators of local crime trends, and by members advising the police of incidents when they occur. • To increase community safety: By providing safety information from other Partnership bodies such as Trading Standards and the Fire & Rescue Service. The most important thing you should do is become a member of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. It is so simple to do. Either visit your local police station or enter your postcode in the 'Contact your local officer' section on the home page of the Sussex Police website (www.sussex.police.uk) to find contact details of your PCSO. Get the interest of some of your neighbours, and you will be told how simple it is to start a scheme. Neighbourhood Watch really works.
POLICE STATIONS
Sussex Police has been reviewing how the public use our police stations and has asked local people how they want to contact us in the future. People were directly engaged through telephone surveys, local face to face surveys in every district and through surveys of callers to police stations. Our research suggests that most people do not know the opening hours of their local police station front office and are willing to use alternative ways to get in touch with us. Many would prefer to make an appointment rather than just 'drop in'. The conclusion of our review is that there are alternative ways that people can contact us that would be more convenient for them and less expensive to run. The total cost of current front office arrangements is £4.2 million each year. By changing opening hours of front offices at times that they are not well used by the public we will save over £2 million per year. Making savings here will mean we can protect policing in local communities. We are reducing the hours that people can just drop into front offices and offering more pre-planned appointments instead. In the future people will be able to book these online as well as over the phone, although this service is not yet available. From May 9th Shoreham and Worthing police stations will be open as follows: • Shoreham, 10:00 - 14:00, 15:00 - 18:00 hrs • Worthing, 09:00 - 20:00 hrs Please be reassured that even when the front counter service is not open the police station is still staffed and functioning normally. In an emergency the public will always be able to contact us quickly through our 999 number. We have one of the best records of all forces in the country at answering these calls quickly. Your policing service is provided by many people working from a number of different locations, which includes but is not limited to, your local police station. For example, officers do not respond to 999 calls from police stations, but are already out on patrol across Sussex. People who have been arrested are taken to centralised custody centres, not a local station. We are confident that the overall service you receive will not change. Details of your local cafficers, current priorities and dates of local meetings are available on-line at www.sussex.police.uk (enter your postcode) or by telephone by calling Shoreham Police Station on 0845 60 70 999.

Lawrie takes Inside Magazine to new heights W
hen Lawrie stevens returned from Nepal having trekked to Base Camp he was always being asked “What’s your next trip?” and having talked to several trekking friends the challenge of Kilimanjaro had to be taken on before he got too old. Training took place every day as he walked for a living delivering magazines such as Inside Shoreham and Southwick. Hill training on the downs completed my programme walking and running up the back of the downs from the Shepherd and Dog to Devil’s Dyke. Lawrie joined a party of 12 in Nairobi before transferring to Kilimanjaro.
12
He said, "It is a deceptive climb at first through rain forest and cultivated land before leaving the fertile lands behind as you get higher where the scenery becomes rockier and the weather colder and windy. "Snow may disappear completely from Kilimanjaro I had read before I left so it was somewhat of a surprise when on our third night at a mere 3500 metres we had a sleet and snow shower which saw us walking in an inch of snow on the lower slopes." He added, "Kilimanjaro is not a technically difficult walk and can be achieved by most people who are reasonably fit very determined and who
adjust to the shortage of oxygen at over 5000 metres (16,400 feet). Whether you reach the summit depends largely on how you get on with the last day of your walk. Starting before midnight we walked up very steep scree which was made more difficult by the ever thickening snow and ice. Most of us fell over regularly but as we made Gillmans point at 5681 metres we knew we could complete the walk around the crater to summit on the roof of Africa at 5895 metres (19341 feet)." He is glad he did it – an exhausting but rewarding trek and one that takes a week or two to get over. People still ask him what’s next!

St. Julians Church
S
t. Julian’s Church in St. Julian’s Lane, dates from around 1050. It is mentioned in the Domeday Book: the survey of the lands of England carried out by the commissioners of William the 1st in 1086. The current church is dedicated to St. Julian, who was the first Bishop of Le Mans in France, the town now well known for its car racing circuit. The foundations of the 11th century church that once existed on this site remain, including pieces of Roman brick. Little if any of the structure of that early church remains however as St. Julian’s was extensively remodelled in the 13th century. The tower and the chancel were built at this time as was the flint porch. The tower was probably originally higher and its pyramid roof is also a later addition. The church was once much closer to the harbour mouth than now, due to the shifting nature of the river Adur. Then Kingston was a village separate from Shoreham and Southwick, but today only the church, rectory and manor remain from those times. The proximity to the port would have made this a busy church attended by sailors, merchants and travellers. Many of the windows in St. Julians date from the 15th century. Near the back of the church is a stained glass window displaying tudor roses and the coat of arms of Nicholas Lewkenor, which is a white shield with blue chevrons. At the end of the 16th century, the Lewkenors were the local manorial Lords and they restored the church. It contains a monument to them built around 1540. Two bench ends and the church’s screen also bear the Lewkenor
14
coat of arms. Sir Richard Lewkenor was M.P for Horsham, Shoreham and East Grinstead and Sherriff of Sussex in 1495. In the mid 16th century Sir Edward Lewkenor was also an M.P and was described as being from the parish of Kingston-by-Sea, at a time when it and its church still had importance and prominence. In the north wall of the chancel is a small window which might once have been an opening to an anchorite cell built onto the outside of the church. An anchorite was a religious recluse or hermit. The hermit would have lived sealed in the wall and been fed by passers-by. The small window into the church itself would have allowed him to join in church services, as in the cell he could kneel on a stone step and be able to see the altar. An alternative reason for this small window is that it once led to a vestry or chapel. The church at Aldrington though is also believed to have contained an anchorite cell. It is known that a bishop only allowed anchorages in churches on well-used roads. It is thought a medieval road once connected Brighton to Shoreham by a route that passed by St. Julian’s church at Kingston, and followed a similar route to that of Middle Road today, continuing through what is now Nicolson Drive to Mill Lane. Among the other windows in St. Julian’s is one signed by Heaton, Butler and Bayne and constructed around 1913. Other windows created by this company can be seen at the church of St. James The Less in Lancing. In 1724, the north aisle of St. Julian’s is known to have been in a bad state of repair. It was closed off from the rest of the building until it was reconstructed in 1843. The pulpit at St. Julians is double-decked and made from timbers of a ship dating from the reign of Elizabeth 1. The square stone font is a survivor from the 11th century and possibly was originally housed in the earlier version of the church. A recessed tomb from 1540 has a roof bearing a row of rosettes, on of which is supposedly the face of the Kingston Devil sticking his tongue out. A carved figure between the south porch and the nave is badly worn, but it is suggested it may have come originally from Lewes Priory and dates from the 12th century. All that is known about its identity is that it is an ecclesiastical figure, identified by its hood and the wide sleeve ending in a ringed cuff. Little else of it has survived. Another unusual feature of St. Julian’s is the singing desk at the east end of aisle, which dates from the 17th century. A flute that was used my musicians at the church is mounted upon it. Sarah's story‌ and how Narconon changed her life M
y name is Sarah and I am writing to tell you a bit about my story, and how my life was totally changed by a rehab program called Narconon. I was a heroin addict for eight years. Not only was I a heroin addict but I was addicted to everything and anything I could get high from. My parents had sent me to rehab after rehab and nothing ever worked, eventually I had drained them of money and energy and they didn’t want to know any more. I moved from Limerick to Dublin to Tipperary and to a lot of other places trying to get away from my drug use. I thought if I moved that it would go away, but the problem is not where I was living it was me not being able to handle situations I was getting myself into and not being able to say no.. I went to the 12 step programs, I wrote my life story, did all the steps and thought I was cured, but I would always go back using drugs. Nothing seemed to work until my mother found Narconon on the internet and it changed my life. Narconon taught me how to confront life and how 22
to be able to be comfortable in any situation without having to run off and use drugs. I did the program there and it made me feel so clean and fresh, I sweated drug residues out of me and felt like a little child again. It was an amazing feeling. The best part came when I was able to confront my past and be honest with myself about all the things I had done wrong - not only to other people but to myself, And I was really honest for the first time ever and it was like a weight had come off my shoulders, and with no consequences... It was great, then I could make up for the things I
had done and mend some bridges.. that was amazing and it brought me and my family and people close to me who I had hurt a lot closer. It let them see that I was sorry and I wanted to put things right. Thanks to doing this I now have a great relationship with my mother and father which is a great feeling. Two years ago my mother was ashamed to call me her daughter but now she said to me "I have my daughter back". I feel I can handle any situation I get myself into today and I am confident in anything I do. I am a stronger person thanks to Narconon, Stronger in my mind then I have ever been. I can now
go back to Ireland and pass people I used to use with and places I used to use in and not have the thought of "maybe just once more." Now I can be confident and happy and clean and just be there comfortably with no horrible feelings. This is all thanks to Narconon and the tools it has given to me to be able to live my life. I came from a life of drugs and crime and from situations that I thought I would never get out of, to a life of happiness and normality with my family 100% behind me and who are proud to walk down the street with me as their daughter And this is all thanks to Narconon and it works.

Sussex Caring Pets need you T
here's a new local voluntary organisation in Sussex that provides temperament-assessed therapy cats and dogs for those in need throughout the county. All our members are volunteers who take their own pets to visit residential care homes, special/ mainstream schools, hospitals, hospices and other similar organisations. We are a group of volunteers who believe that animals provide a source of companionship, love and comfort that is unique. To be suitable the dog or cat must be people-oriented, not too excitable but not too nervous as they may come across unexpected noises and usual behavior during their visit. If after a series of simple tasks the pet is suitable, then we discuss with the volunteer what kind of place they would like to visit and what might best suit their animal. Once approved, visits are usually conducted weekly or fortnightly depending on the volunteer’s availability and the needs of the place to be visited. Terry, one of SCP's dedicated
volunteers, has for some time been taking his therapy dog Sparkie, a 9-year-old sheep dog, to meet patients in the stroke unit of his local hospital. Only last week while on the stroke unit with Sparkie, one patient's son said it was the first time that he had seen his mother smile since she was admitted, a reward in itself. “In small ways, SCP's therapy cats and dogs bring companionship to the patients and staff alike,” says Terry. Sussex Caring Pets are also delighted to
announce that Sally Gunnell OBE, one of Britain’s most popular sportswomen, is a celebrity supporter of the work we do. To join costs £19 per yr which goes towards our annual insurance cover. SCP has no paid staff or government funding. All our work is carried out by our team of volunteers To find out how to volunteer with your cat or dog, or see how to support us in other ways perhaps by making a donation or sponsoring a Sussex Caring Pets therapy dog or cat, please visit our website: www.sussexcaringpets.org or send us an email: sussexcaringpet@ btinternet.com you can also give us a call on 07818743762 & 07551071268.
