Feeling Good at Feel Good Factor F
eeling really good inside? These days it seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month. Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist. She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know
more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly. “You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

'Stirrings of the Spirit' Exhibitions T
hink wind, fire, energy and inspiration for this year’s exhibitions in St Mary’s and St Nicolas’s churches in Shoreham during the Adur Festival this month. The church celebration of Pentecost or Whitsun falls in the middle of the Festival fortnight and the ancient theme of the empowering of the Holy Spirit has inspired over 50 local artists to contribute their own personal interpretation to make a rich and varied exhibition in St Mary’s. Paintings, photographs, mosaics, ceramics, woodwork, sculpture, stained glass and banners will be on show and extra events including play performances, a lecture and open evenings will add to the programme. Meanwhile, in St Nicolas’s church, the children of St Nicolas and St Mary School will be letting their imaginations run riot on the same themes and, if previous years are anything to go by, their work will be well worth a visit too. St Mary’s will be open every day during the Festival – from 11.00am to 5.00pm on weekdays and Saturdays and from 2.00pm to 6.00pm on Sundays. St Nicolas’s will open from 2.00pm to 4pm on weekdays and from 12.00 noon to 4.00pm at weekends (from Monday 6th June onwards) Admission is free and disabled friendly and children are very welcome too. The club will provide a safe and friendly environment for boys of all abilities to improve their football skills and knowledge, while being able to mix with other children of similar age and interests. They aim to move the Under 9’s team up to the next age bracket every season keeping as many of the current team members as possible in order to provide a strong bond and a recognisable team for all the boys. Due to being part of Shoreham-by-Sea's most respected county league football side Shoreham FC they can also offer lower yearly registration fees than other local clubs. Every child will be supplied a team kit along with a team T-Shirt and a unique Shoreham FC Youth training jacket. Every home game during the actual season they award a Man-of-the-Match trophy, offer indoor changing facilities, club house facilities which include tea, coffee and hot food. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Will rates stay low for longer? A
t the beginning of May the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to keep rates at the all time low of 0.5%. Many were predicting that rates would rise but are now changing their view, thinking that rates will remain low for longer. The last week has seen many lenders reducing their fixed rate mortgages, is this a sign that our rates will remain low? The MPC meet every month and make a decision on our interest rates. They take into account many economic factors when making their decision, information gathered from within the bank and outside sources. Their job is to keep our economy stable. In their own words “One of the Bank of England's two core purposes is monetary stability. Monetary stability means stable prices - low inflation - and confidence in the currency. Stable prices are defined by the Government's inflation target, which the Bank seeks to meet through the decisions taken by the Monetary Policy Committee.”
If you are taking a mortgage now, it’s a good idea to compare both fixed and variable rate or tracker mortgages. The Government’s inflation target is 2%. The MPC use the interest rate to control this. If inflation is high they can increase the rate. Inflation has been high recently which is why people have through rates would increase. In February the UK Consumer Prices Index was at 4.4%, way above the target. The MPC were under pressure to increase rates. In March, however, this fell to 4%, with no rate rise. As inflation is an annualised figure, it is possible to predict within reason what will happen. Predictions from top economists are that inflation will remain at 4-5% during 2011, and will naturally fall to 2% during 2012. They feel that interest rates do not need to go up for this to happen. Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England has been voting to keep the rate at 0.5%. His view is that there is too much borrowed money in the economy and a rate rise would push many people and businesses into bankruptcy. In a speech to a finance committee at the European Parliament he said “The economic consequences of high-level indebtedness now would become more severe if rates were to rise, it is the main reason why interest rates are so low.” Other economists agree thinking that a rate rise would be detrimental, and predicting that rates will remain low for a much longer time, some think even to the end of 2012. If this is the case, it’s is good news for anyone on variable or 6
tracker rate mortgages. If you are taking a mortgage now, it’s a good idea to compare both fixed and variable rate or tracker mortgages. There could still be some value in taking a tracker rate, especially if the initial rate is much lower than the fixed rates on offer. This seems to be the case in today’s market. Everybody’s situation is different, so it’s always best to speak to a professional adviser. They can show you the rates on offer and make a comparison, advising you on the best rate for you. Neighbourhood Policing MEET YOUR PCSOs
PCSO ROSEMARY HILL Southlands Ward
Hi, I am Rosemary Hill and I am your Police Community Support Officer for Southlands Ward. I took over Southlands Ward this year, previously covering St. Mary’s South and the town centre. I am enjoying meeting lots of new people and getting to know the area. We have just finished our Week of Action involving Sussex Police and other local multi-agencies. A questionnaire was carried out with local residents to establish what they felt local problems for them were; litter, dog mess, anti-social behaviour, underage drinking, road safety, more to do for young people. All these things were tackled during the week of action. For example, we had Community Payback group clearing litter, rubbish and fly tipping in the road next to Kingsland Close backing on to On Time. Anti-Social behaviour surgeries were held in Kingsland Close, Middle Road Park and Parklands for members of the public to come and report problems and discuss same with the police and the Safer Adur Team in a relaxed atmosphere. Football tournaments were arranged for young people along with Fire and Rescue, and advice was also given to youngsters on scooter safety. Southlands Ward needs more neighbourhood watch members so a recruitment evening and quiz were held at the Southlanders Café. Our last day had a community litter pick, open to anyone who wanted to volunteer to help. To close the successful week of action a Celebration Event was held at The Southlanders Café Milward Court, with the café open, stalls, and Drumming Art Installation by Young People.
FOCUSING IN YOUR AREA Sussex Police hold regular meetings with residents through Neighbourhood Panels. These enable local people to discuss issues and concerns in their area with the police and other agencies and to agree an appropriate course of action. Neighbourhood Panels are driven and chaired by local people. They are a proven way of fostering local issues and ensuring good working partnerships. Objectives and Aims of a Neighbourhood Panel. The objectives of a Neighbourhood Panel are determined by the unique needs of the community it serves. The aims are to give local people and communities more influence over decision making, so as to improve the quality-of-life issues that most affect them. They are about creating strong partnerships between local people and the agencies and service providers responsible for their area; local people working as equal partners, making their own choices, monitoring progress, and ensuring accountability. Your local Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently looking to enrol new members for their local Neighbourhood Panels. In particular they would like to encourage those under the age of 20yrs to join so the youth can have a voice & issues can be viewed from their perspective. If you would like to become involved or know someone or have a family member that would, please contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team. Opening times of Shoreham & Lancing Police Stations have recently been reviewed. Lancing Police Station: by appointment only. Shoreham Police Station, Front office will be open between 10.00hrs-14.00hrs & 15.00hrs18.00hrs.
Details of your local cafficers, current priorities and dates of local meetings are available on-line at www.sussex.police.uk (enter your postcode) or by telephone by calling Shoreham Police Station on 0845 60 70 999.

A parched garden W
ithout doubt the weather for spring leading into early summer has been wonderful for enjoying the garden, but it is now starting to ring alarm bells for those of us who enjoy gardening as the recent months have been so very dry. Whilst the temperatures are not too high, the ground is holding onto moisture fairly well, but I fear a few more weeks of this and we will be seeing the brown lawns and struggling plants. It’s probably wise to start getting prepared for the dry summer now. There’s no loss if we have three solid weeks of rain after I write this! Most water butts are probably empty at the moment having had no rainfall to fill them. Make sure they are all properly connected to their water source to gather as much new rainfall as possible and keep them covered to stop evaporation. Check your hosepipe is working without leaks, and the sprinkler works properly, as they do seem to go wrong quite frequently. If you are going to water then do so in the evening when there is less evaporation and you will make the water go further. Another simple idea is to cut the bottoms off of plastic drinks bottles. These can be dug into the ground next to the roots of a plant, and the water poured into these. That way no water is lost and it goes straight to where the plant needs it. It’s well worth considering using mulch such as bark, shingle, or decorative aggregate to cover over pots or even beds with. This helps to keep the ground moist and 10
reduce evaporation. For smaller gardens, such as grow bags, pots and containers and hanging baskets, watering is even more of a problem. They all need constant watering as they dry out so quickly, and since most are packed full of expensive tender plants they can be killed off quickly if allowed to dry out. When preparing hanging baskets use a good lining of moss and plastic, with some slits in. This will help to hold the water but still allow drainage. With any container, it’s well worth adding some water retaining gel into the compost to reduce the effect of drying out. Also consider the position of the pots themselves. If possible move to a position where they get a little more shade, and move them away from walls if they are near to them. Walls will reflect hat and also retain it overnight, speeding up the drying out process. When it comes to lawns it really is a labour of love to keep them watered during the summer months and if you are on a water meter very expensive. Most lawns will recover from a dry spell so if it is not your main concern, then be prepared to leave it to nature. If not then try to make the most of other sources of water such as grey water. This is water from baths etc. It can be poured on lawns and they should be ok, but avoid washing up water as it can be high in salt. If you are going to water pots that are close to the lawn, then move them onto the lawn first and any water that misses will still be of benefit to the garden.
If we now get a long bout of rain, I apologise in advance for ruining the summer, but with this wonderful weather you don’t really need an excuse to get out during the long evenings and make the most of the garden. Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

New Shoreham Footbridge Public Consultation W
est Sussex County Council will be consulting on the proposed design of the replacement Shoreham Footbridge through a public exhibition during early June. The exhibition will give the local community a chance to view and comment on the proposed bridge design. The new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will replace the existing ageing bridge on Shoreham High Street, which is owned by West Sussex County Council. The exhibition will be available at several locations in Shoreham between Friday June 3 and noon on Friday June 17. • The Foyer of the Adur Civic Centre, Ham Road, Shoreham, Friday June 3 until Thursday June 9. • The Waterside Inn on Shoreham Beach, Friday June 10 until Sunday June 12. • The Foyer of the Shoreham Centre, 12
Pond Road, Monday June 13 until noon on Friday June 17. Representatives of the project team will be available to answer questions and listen to feedback at the Adur Civic Centre on Friday June 3 between 10am and 4pm and the Shoreham Centre on Wednesday June 15 between 10am and 6pm. A contract worth up to £4 million to design and build the new bridge has been awarded to family-owned construction, civil engineering and property services company Osborne. Funding is coming from the County Council and the Big Lottery Fund, who awarded charity Sustrans £50million to extend the National Cycle Network into towns and cities across the UK, providing everyday routes for pedestrians and cyclists. Lionel Barnard, West Sussex
County Council Deputy Leader with responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “We are excited that we are getting to the stage when we can see what the new bridge might actually look like. We want to involve local people and give everyone the chance to see for themselves, ask questions and give us their views.” The proposed design has been put together by contractor Osborne and Engineering Consultancy Cass Hayward working with West Sussex County Council and a Steering Group comprising representatives of the local community including County and Adur Councillors, the Shoreham Beach Residents Association, the Shoreham Society and the Port Authority. Construction of the bridge is expected to start next year and be completed in Spring 2013. To advertise call: 01273 452065

John Cooper Powys
J
ohn Cooper Powys was one of a family of eleven, and he and two of his brothers became well known literary figures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1872, in Shirley, Derbyshire, John Cowper Powys was the son of the Reverend Charles Francis Powys and Mary Cowper Johnson, who was a descendent of the poet William Cowper. Powys was brought up in Dorset and Somerset, and attended Cambridge University. He first came to Sussex in 1893, having been offered a teaching appointment at a Brighton girls’ school. He recorded how at the time he had needed to find somewhere to stay, so walked along the seafront as far as Southwick. He chose to lodge here because, as he later recalled ‘it reminded me of home. It made me think of the Weymouth harbour.' Powys was able to find rooms above Mr Pollard's grocer's shop in Albion Street, which at that time was Southwick’s main shopping street. He was earning £5 a week lecturing and had a £60 a year allowance from his father. His Southwick lodgings cost £1 a week and included a back bedroom and a room with a bow window that had a view across the harbour. 'O, so vividly does the view out of that window return to me now...the open sea, the harbour, the backwater, a boat-builder's yard and the unimposing little street! Here I speedily settled down and began my lectures...’ he remembered. In his recollections he also mentions that the room smelt of sardines. He described the building next door as ' a high-roofed, rather sorrowful-looking dissenting chapel’. Powys even wrote a poem about his time in Southwick and admitted that ‘the poignant magic of spring’ in Southwick affected him more than in any other place. The building that contained Pollard’s shop and Powys’ rooms has long since been demolished. While living in Southwick, Powys lectured at Miss Walder’s school at 26 Wilbury Road Hove, and two others, one at 5 The Drive and the other at 39-41 Tisbury Road, Brighton. Soon schools in Eastbourne were also requiring his services
14
and around 1896, he moved to an isolated farmhouse at Offham near Lewes. Powys qualified as a University Extension lecturer and began to travel around the country by train delivering lectures on both philosophy and literature. He would walk the four miles to Lewes station and then read Dickens and Hardy on the train, while eating large amounts of chocolate. He married Margaret Lyons sister of a friend on April 6th 1896 and the couple moved west to Burpham. They had a son, Littleton Alfred, in 1902. In 1904 Powys began to lucratively lecture in America during the winter months. He needed the money as his wife had insisted on hiring two maids to help with the care of their son, and then there was the expense of Littleton’s schooling. Perhaps he took on too much work as in 1907 Powys had to temporarily cease lecturing and have surgery for a stomach ulcer. Powys’s first published works were collections of poems published in 1896 and 1899, to little critical interest. ‘Wood and Stone’ his first novel was published in America in 1915, to be followed by ‘Rodmoor’ the next year. A third novel ‘After My Fashion’ was set in Sussex. In 1921 Powys met Phyllis Playter, and gradually they became a couple, though he remained married to Margaret and continued to support her and pay for their son’s education. In 1929 the novel ‘Wolf Solent’ brought Powys both financial and critical success, which he followed up in 1932 with another novel that proved popular, entitled ‘A Glastonbury Romance’. John Cowper Powys wrote a number of other novels and short stories and was a man of letters, corresponding with many well-known figures of the time. George Steiner wrote of him that his books were ‘the only novels produced by an English writer that can fairly be compared to the fictions of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky'. After a spell living first in America and then Dorchester, Powys moved to Corwen, North Wales in July 1935, soon learning to read Welsh. Here he wrote two Welsh themed novels Owen Glendower in 1941 and Porius in 1951. In his literary works, Powys often criticised cruelty to animals. He was opposed to fox hunting and was a vegetarian. In 1955 he and Phyllis moved to Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales where he continued to write. John Cowper Powys died in 1963. Judy Upton

ast month Absent Elk released ‘Comfort or Amuse’ as a charity single in aid of Cancer Research UK. The song performed by the band’s Norwegian singer/ songwriter Kjetil Morland, is inspired by, and written for his mum Hildegunn, who is suffering from bowel cancer. Kjetil says, “Cancer touches the lives of so many people, and we want to do everything we can to
22
generate funds and raise awareness into helping beat this disease. This is a very personal song so both recording it and shooting the video meant a great deal to me.” This is a non-profit release, where all profits generated in the UK will be donated to Cancer Research UK – including publishing income from any UK radio play.
The video, also directed by Kjetil, was shot on the Isle of Wight said, “The video concept is based around the chorus lyric of the song, which suggests that a cure has been found for cancer. Charities such as Cancer Research UK made the ground breaking progress every day to make this possibility a reality, but the research can’t continue without our help. We want to get as many people behind
this as we can, to help to make a difference and contribute towards Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.” The video is already live on YouTube and Facebook, and the band is hoping many people will show their support by joining the FaceBook page ‘Comfort or Amuse’. The single is now available on iTunes and other major online stores. To advertise call: 01273 452065
In Holland Stands a House
S
outhwick Players Youth (SPY) are proud to present "In Holland Stands A House" (the story of Anne Frank) written by Sue Saunders and Cecily O' Neill. 'Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only
24
because I've never written anything before, but also because it seems to me that later on neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteenyear-old schoolgirl.' (June 20, 1942). Nearly 70 years later,
people all over the world are still fascinated by Anne's story and, every year, thousands visit the annexe where she spent more than two years, the youngest of the eight hiding from the Nazis, dependent on the help of four others who
provided them with food, clothing, medicine, books and other daily necessities without being noticed by the neighbours or the other workers in the office and warehouse. This play, based on Anne Frank’s diary, skillfully interweaves a dramatised account of events in occupied Europe with domestic scenes from the secret annexe. It also deals with the issue of racism, as well as ethnic and cultural differences which are still problems faced today. This is a must see play for children and adults alike. Director Ron Common has thoroughly enjoyed working with such a talented group of children and adults. He has especially been proud of the youth group for their hard work and commitment, which over the past few years has seen SPY grow from strength to strength. They have enjoyed recent successes with Sinbad the Sailor and the award winning Cold Comfort Farm (Brighton & Hove Arts Council Best Overall Production). Dates: Wednesday 20th - Saturday 23rd July 2011. Times: Evenings: 7.30pm, matinee on Saturday 23rd 2.30pm. Prices: £9.00/10.00. To book tickets, please contact the box office on 01273 597094 or through ticket lord on www. southwickplayers.org.uk. Southwick Players are always looking for new members.
