March 2010

Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment And suddenly it is March. Did you know that name ‘March’ comes from ancient Rome and it was the first month of the year. Named Martius after Mars, who was the Roman god of war. It was the beginning of spring as it is for us here in the less sunnier climes. This Month the clocks “spring forward” on the 28th of March which means more light for gardening and spring walks! This month we also celebrate a number of days. On the 14th we have Mothering Sunday – so splurge on making your mum happy by making it a really special day. We also have St Patricks Day on the 17th. We have lots to read this month. From our ‘sponsor a roundabout’ to local issues with our local support officers. We also have quite a few charities which you can read about and lend your support to – the Lifeboat society. Read the latest on

the development of the Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station as well as local events. We also have the charity bike ride for Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Centre on 25th of April — traveling along the Downslink and finishing off at Slinfold Parish Hall for a ploughman’s lunch. The latest historical article from Judy is about Shoreham Churches and Chapels. Fascinating the architectural history behind the many churches that exist in this area! On that final note, I hope that you enjoy this months magazine and if you do have a local piece you would like to see in the magazine, please send it along with any photo’s and we will definitely try and fit it in. Until April, Best Wishes, Angela

Get more positive people in your life O

ther people can be radiators or drains. Radiators spread warmth and positivity and make you feel confident and inspired. However, drains sap your energy and discourage you; their negativity can leave you feeling irritated and depressed. How to spot a drain? Typical behaviour includes being critical and sarcastic, moaning and complaining. ‘Drains’ can also be needy and self centred. Sounds like someone you know? If you have to be around drains (because you work with them or are related to them) try challenging or humouring them. When they say something negative, respond with curiosity: ‘ Oh! Why do you think that’? Or, you could offer a more positive way of looking at things; ‘At least you / I tried my best’. Or refuse to play their game; simply respond to their negative comments with ‘Uh huh’. Where possible reduce the amount of time you spend around drains and increase the amount of time you spend with radiators. Typically, ‘radiators’ give out warmth and energy like rays from the sun. They have enthusiasm and a sense of humour – Joanna Lumley, David Tennant Julie Walters and Cheryl Cole are all examples. Who are the positive people are in your life? Who can provide you with empathy, support, and fun? Different people have different attributes. One might be the friend who motivates and inspires you, while someone else might always be the right person to celebrate your successes and cheer you up when times are tough. Look for people you can be yourself with, who value your opinion and who make you feel good. How to get more positive people in your life? Take up a new interest and meet people who share that interest. Read about and watch TV shows and films that show positive, inspiring characters. You can also try radiating a bit more yourself. Fill your life with all the positive thoughts and energy that come from being among the radiators and send it back out to other people. For more ideas see ‘Bounce. Cycle for the Centre

T

he Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Centre is holding a sponsored bike ride on Sunday 25th April to raise money to fund its much needed services. The riders starts at Shoreham Airport, and travel along the Downslink, finishing at Slinfold Parish Hall for a ploughmans lunch. It’s a beautiful route, fairly flat being mostly on the old railway route, and a distance of about 18 miles. Transport is provided back to Shoreham Airport for those who book it, although the fittest ones amongst us often choose to cycle home! All the money raised goes directly into providing therapies, exercise classes and social opportunities for people who live with chronic neurological conditions.

Is this a suitable welcome to Shoreham? Shoreham or Lancing and the wider area and there is much scope for improvement. The photo above illustrates the sorry state of the roundabout which has been neglected for many years. The photo below is of the roundabout at Holmbush, showing that sponsorship can be a very effective way of presenting your company name to the public in a positive manner. Anyone interested in sponsoring this roundabout should contact either West Sussex Highways or Adur District Council.

Local Policing Operation Westhope Operation Westhope has been set up to investigate garage breaks that have been occurring across Adur since November 2009. To date there have been 60 reported garage breaks, out of those 60 garage breaks 20 had nothing stolen. 40 of the reported garage breaks have had the following items stolen: mountain bikes, power tools, quad bikes, motocross bikes, fishing equipment / Sporting equipment, and replica guns. The garages that have been hit are mainly in garage compounds away from housing and seem to be occurring in the early hours of the morning and over the weekends. Entry is being gained to the garages by cutting the padlocks off, or forcing the locks. Adur and Worthing Neighbour Response Teams have stepped up their patrols of garage compounds at night to attempt to catch the persons responsible. Sussex Police are urging everyone to be extra vigilant and report any behaviour you deem to be suspicious in and around garage compounds. Adur and Worthing Neighbourhood Policing teams are going to be attending garage compounds in and around Adur with UV pens to help mark up property being kept in the garages, dates of this are to be confirmed and

6

will be announced in due course. Step up your security around your garages by taking down any serial/ identification numbers and take pictures of any property so it can be easily traced if stolen. If you have any information relating to any of the garage breaks please contact Shoreham Police Station on 0845 60 70 999 quoting OP Westhope, alternatively you can also pass information to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Colour is coming W

inter seems to be going on forever this year, with the cold gloomy weather defiantly holding on. As we come into March though, the early signs of spring are there to see. Have a good look around and the encouraging site of new bulbs emerging through the soil will bring a smile to your face. The lighter evenings and longer days are starting to be come noticeable to us, but even more so to the plants that thrive on the extra daylight hours as they slowly come into the new season’s life. As we get more and more sunny days, then there are more chances to get out into the garden. There is plenty to do, but keep a good eye on the weather forecasts. Heavy frosts and cold winds are a feature of March, so don’t be lured into a false sense of security. Most gardens suffer from a lack of colour in the lull between winter and spring, so make the most of what colour you do have. Dead head any winter flowering Pansies and bedding plants to extend their flowering season a little longer. It’s also a good time to save a little money and make your plants go further. Herbaceous plants such as Irises, Hostas and day lilies can be divided, and replanted, making more plants from single overgrown clumps. This is easily done with a spade, and you don’t need to be too surgical with the cut! It’s also a good time to transplant shrubs that are still dormant, if you think they will 8

be better suited to another site in the garden. Give them plenty of compost when you re-plant them. There’s still time to get into the beds and get plants such as Hydrangeas, dogwoods, Lavatera and Buddleja pruned back ready for the summer. While you’re in the beds dig over any areas where you plan to plant your annuals and get some good compost or well rotted manure dug in ready for them. If you notice any plants have become loose due to the heavy snow we have had or the frost and winter winds, then re-heel them back. If necessary a support stake can be used to assist them re-root, but don’t leave it in too long as they can become reliant on them. In the vegetable garden, the activity continues to increase. Shallots can be planted outside. Rhubarb should be beginning to show itself now. If you love the stuff, then forcing it, by placing an old bucket over it to make the shoots grow thinner and more tender is a good method of getting some early crops. This shouldn’t be done every year though as it does take a lit of energy from the plant. You can now look at sowing certain varieties of carrots and parsnips in the ground, covered by a cloche. In the green house the chili peppers, aubergines, tomatoes, leeks, cabbages and cauliflowers can all be got underway. Finally now is an excellent time of year to get the ball rolling on any big plans for the garden underway. There

is always an explosion of activity at Easter as people seem to come out of hibernation then, which makes booking landscapers and gardeners time harder so make sure you beat that rush! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice

Is it time to remortgage? S

ince the Bank of England reduced the base rate to 0.5%, the remortgage market has changed. Many mortgage borrowers have finished on their fixed rates, and have seen a big reduction in their monthly outgoings. Many have reverted to tracker rates, which track the Bank of England base rate. Others have gone onto their lender’s standard variable rate. Either way, many have seen a good reduction in their payments. This has changed the market for remortgages, as many people have no longer sought the next deal. In fact they have been better off staying where they are. Things could be changing though. The Bank of England has not increased the base rate, however, you may be surprised to know that some lenders have increased their own standard variable rates. So, depending which type of rate you have, you could see your payments increasing more quickly than expected.

increases their payments. There will be a point, however, when it would be wise to fix your mortgage rate for the future, whilst rates are low. Currently many new borrowers (purchasers) are taking fixed rate mortgages. I wonder when existing mortgage holders will start jumping on the bandwagon.

If you need advice on mortgages or any other financial matter, please call me, Claire Cook, on 01273 224667. We offer a free initial consultation and independent financial advice. Buy to let mortgages are not regulated by the Finanicial Services Authority. Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd, which is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. If you prefer to pay a fee for advice this option is available, the exact amount of the fee will depend on circumstances but we estimate it will be 0.5% of the loan amount. Where a rate is quoted the rate will depend on individual circumstances and not all borrowers will qualify for acceptance of the loan (or similar).Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Tracker rates If you are on a tracker deal, your rate will follow the Bank of England base rate. This cannot be altered by your lender, they have to abide by their original offer to you. So, for example, your offer could say that when your fixed rate ends your mortgage would be charged at bank base rate + 2% for the remaining term of your mortgage. Your lender has no choice but to honour this, meaning that your mortgage would currently be charged at 2.5%. Your rate is in the hands of the Bank of England, not your own lender.

Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You

Standard Variable Rate These are the rates which the lenders can control, they set the rates themselves. Normally they rise and fall broadly in line with the Bank of England rate, but in recent times lenders have been very different in how they have dealt with the rate cuts. Some passed the full rate cuts on, and others did not. Now, some are actually increasing their rates. The people this will affect are borrowers on discounted deals, or borrowers who have finished their initial rate, and are paying the standard rate. So, if you are on a variable rate deal, which is not a tracker, you could find that your lender may make an increase. Is it time to start looking at your options?

How long to stick at base rate? It has made financial sense for people to stick with the variable rates, but there always comes a time for a review. Many people will be prompted when their lender actually 10

Springwatch Festival at Stanmer Park

P

lans are already underway to make Brighton’s Springwatch Festival 2010 even bigger and better than last year. Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) is delighted to be working in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) organising the Festival in Stanmer Park and plan some exciting hands-on nature based activities to appeal to all ages. Now in its fifth year, the Springwatch Festival brings together wildlife experts, organisations, friends groups and nature lovers from all over the county. Attended by over 10,000 people each year, it will take place on Sunday 6 June (10:00-17:00) and entry is free of charge. The Festival will showcase 12

four wild zones giving visitors the chance to learn more about the wildlife that lives in the city, on the downs and in woodland, as well as the huge variety of marine creatures that live in our rivers, on the shoreline or under the waves. A special area will be devoted to encouraging people to turn their own back gardens or green spaces into wildlife havens to help birds, small mammals, plants, insects and amphibians adapt to the pressures of climate change. To coincide with United Nations International Year of Biodiversity there’s an opportunity to take part in ‘Bioblitz’ co-ordinated by SWT and the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre (SxBRC).

‘Bioblitz’ challenges both biodiversity experts and Springwatch visitors to see how many different wildlife species can be identified and counted in Stanmer Park during the course of the Festival. Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, BHCC's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Sussex Wildlife Trust on what will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of our Big Nature campaign, which marks the International Year of Biodiversity. “The Springwatch Festival is a fantastic opportunity to find out all about the wide range of wildlife found in and around Brighton & Hove and brings together

the council's own Cityparks team, wildlife experts and community groups from across Sussex.” As well as the many different wildlife activities on offer, local produce will also be available as well as local entertainment. There is a £5 parking charge and visitors are strongly encouraged to use public transport. There will be additional bus services available from Brighton and Falmer train station is a 15 minute walk. Cyclists are also encouraged and free cycle parking will be available.

Tyne Class All-Weather Fast Slipway Lifeboat – similar to the type used at Shoreham

Can you help the RNLI? T

he Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Society has been in existence for more than 15 years, having evolved from a long running and successful fund raising operation run by the Ladies Guilds of Shoreham and Lancing. Its purpose is to raise money to support the running of the Shoreham lifeboat and the needs of the crew. Most people find it quite incredible that a major, front line, life saving service such as the RNLI is run totally on the generosity of the public. The brave members of the crew who risk their own lives every time they put to sea are unpaid volunteers, and the whole organisation is dependent upon charitable donations. As everyone is no doubt aware, the new lifeboat house is rapidly taking shape and hopefully will be ready for use by the end of autumn this year. Once it is finished then the new lifeboat can be delivered and Shoreham will 14

then have a set up to rival anywhere in the country. The crew will have quarters that are warm and dry; all the necessary equipment will be ready for immediate use; the all weather and inshore boats will be housed together; and there will be a viewing platform which will be open to the public. All of this is costing in the region of £6million, and the local branch of the RNLI has been charged with raising £1million towards it. The remainder of the money will come from national RNLI funds.

The good news is that we are already well over halfway there, but that still leaves a long way to go. They need your help in many ways. Firstly, by joining the Society and helping us with all our fundraising activitie and even thinking up new ways of fundraising. Secondly, by supporting them financially with donations, or even by putting bequests in your will that will help in years to come. Thirdly, by attending the events they put on and having a go – it will be fun, and all the proceeds go to the best possible cause.

They have various activities spread throughout the year, including spring and autumn quiz nights; attendance at the RAFA Shoreham Air Show; Shoreham Port Authority open day; Worthing Carnival, and Fire Station open day; car boot sale; bucket collections; coffee mornings; and tombola stalls at all the local town fayres. They have their AGM on Tuesday 23rd March at St Peters Church Hall, West Street, Shoreham starting at 7.30pm, so go along and meet them and find out how you can help. A month later, at the same venue, they will be holding their spring quiz night, complete with fish ‘n’ chip supper – individuals and/or teams welcome.

For further information on the Societys aims and activities please contact Hugh Tucknott on 01273 597018; Jane Tugwell on 01273 701290; or for membership application forms contact Judy Bradshaw on 01273 700877. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Shoreham Churches and Chapels S

horeham has a number of nonconformist churches and chapels in the town centre, although some no longer places of worship. The history of non-conformity began around the mid 1600s when small groups of people began to choose to attend their own meetings rather than the established churches. It’s reported in John Wesley’s journal for 1758 that he travelled from Fareham to Rottingdean on October 6th of that year, presumably crossing the Adur by ferry at Shoreham. A few months earlier Selina, Countess of Huntingdon had moved to Brighthelmstone as it was still called and become involved in the setting up of a society of Calvinistic Methodism in the area. Around 1800 the Calvinistic Methodists built their first chapel in Shoreham, in Star Lane, or Church Street as it is now called. The chapel began as the Mariners’ Free Chapel, was later renamed Star Lane Chapel and then became the Protestant Free Church. In 1904 a new, larger church was erected on the corner of Gordon Road. The Huntingdon Free Church still occupies this site today and their former building in Church Street has been used at various times as a school, a cinema and concert hall. By 1826, there is a mention of Wesleyans meeting at Brother Clarke’s house on the Ham, in Shoreham. It’s recorded that the Reverend John Barker would visit from Brighton to preach on Tuesday evenings. Its congregation soon outgrew the ordinary terraced house and a chapel was clearly the answer. Local baker and grocer John Ratcliff put up a substantial amount of the money needed to purchase a site on what was to become New Road. In 1829 there were as yet few other buildings there. The chapel was built looking out onto the harbour and it became the Shoreham Wesleyan Methodists home for the next seventy-one years. Twenty years after it opened, steps and a gallery were added to accommodate the still growing Sunday congregations. The Wesleyans finally moved on again in 1900, and for a time their old chapel was occupied by the Salvation Army. Then in 1921 it was developed into two flats with a garage

16

Huntingdon Free Church, corner of Buckingham Road and Gordon Road

underneath and became a residential address. The new Wesley Church was built in Brunswick Road, a spacious chapel with a good-sized church hall beside it. The Baptists, in the 1860s, were meeting over a High Street butcher’s shop and in the loft of a sail-maker. Like the other non-conformist churches in Shoreham their membership quickly outgrew their premises. The answer was to construct an iron chapel in Western Road, which in 1872, was replaced by the permanent chapel and classroom that remains their home today. In 1867 it is recorded that there was a Particular Baptist Church in John Street. This belonged to a group known as the Strict and Particular Baptists, who still exist but no longer have a chapel in Shoreham. Another group of Methodists, known as the Primitive Methodists also established a chapel in the heart of Shoreham. Their first chapel, built in 1863, was in West Street and later became a boys club among other uses. In 1880 the Primitive Methodists built a new church in Shoreham High Street, on a riverside site opposite the Marlipins. They sold the West Street building to the Salvation Army who occupied it for a time. The High Street church was a tall, imposing building with a hall beneath it for their Sunday school. The church remained until the 1930s, which was a

challenging time for all of Shoreham’s churches as congregation numbers had fallen due to the heavy losses of young men in World War 1. When the church was closed in 1935, its organ was transported to the Lyndhurst Road chapel in Worthing. The church was subsequently demolished and replaced with an office block. The final former church building in central Shoreham was not a nonconformist chapel but the old St. Peters Roman Catholic Church in John Street. By the mid nineteenth century, with no Catholic place of worship in Shoreham, a priest was travelling from Worthing to conduct services in a house in Surry Street. Services then moved to a schoolroom on land between John Street and Ship Street. This site was owned by a Church of England vicar who was received into the Catholic Church in 1855 and donated the land to it. Built in 1875 by Charles Buckler in the decorated gothic style, the old St. Peters is constructed of cobbled flint with stone dressings and has a bell tower. Augusta Duchess of Norfolk paid for the construction. A presbytery was added in 1877. Today the former St. Peters is Grade 2 listed and has been used for residential purposes since 1982. A new St. Peters Church built in 1983, stands on the site of a former Catholic School in West Street. Judy Upton To advertise call: 01273 452065

Noises off!

I

t’s countdown to chaos from dress rehearsal to final performance of a terrible sex comedy called Nothing On, making Michael Frayn’s play within a play, Noises Off! probably the funniest farce ever written. And this is Wick Theatre Company’s spring production! Performances run from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 April 2010 at the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street,

22

Southwick. Curtain up is at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £8.50 for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and £9.00 for Friday and Saturday from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or through our website: www. wicktheatre.co.uk Personal relationships among the cast of Nothing On are tricky due to various complicated love interests. Temperamental Lloyd Dallas, the director (Guy Steddon) is involved with

both Brooke Ashton (Sophie Lane) an inexperienced actress from London, and assistant stage-manager Poppy Norton-Taylor (Olivia Robinson), emotional and over-sensitive. Dotty Otley (Judith Berrill) is a late-middle-aged actress dating actor Garry Lejeune (Mark Best) who is easily infuriated. In order to make him jealous, she also meets another actor, Frederick Fellows (John

Garland) suffering from a serious fear of violence and blood. And to make matters worse, Belinda Blair (Natalie Colgate) a cheerful and reliable actress, may have feelings for Fred. Elderly alcoholic Selsdon Mowbray (Bob Ryder) hides his whisky bottles on stage, and must be watched all the time in case he slips away and passes out. Timothy Algood (Tom Harris) is the harassed stage-manager, and understudy to Fred and Selsdon. The situation between members of the cast and crew continues to deteriorate during the tour of the play to various (fictional) provincial theatres, leading to offstage shenanigans and onstage bedlam. Master of farce Tony Brownings directs, assisted by Fiona Cameron. Tony was also responsible for Wick’s NODA award winning production of Abigail’s Party. To advertise call: 01273 452065
