Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello, and welcome to our May edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick. Recently I took my daughter to Coombes Farm to see the lambing in progress. Many of you may have seen their signs around. It was fantastic experience and it was lovely to see families out with their children enjoying a lovely friendly farm with loads of cows and sheep. Unfortunately, my daughter keeps telling us how loud the cows were. In this months issue we have quite a few plays lined up in Southwick Barn Theatre – SUOR ANGELICA and PAGLIACCI from the 2nd of May, Murdered by Death 3rd-6th June and Judy Upton, our local historical writer, has a Comedy Thriller –
'The Ballad of a Thin Man' showing at Ropetackle on the 21st May. Of course we also have the What’s On guide at the back of our magazine which you can use to see the latest events as well as activities to participate in. Finally, if you are a would be writer, you maybe very interested in the workshop that Jennifer Pulling, best selling writer and journalist, will be having. See inside for details. On that note, I wish you all a lovely May and I look forward to you sending me your articles. See you in June. Angela

LOCAL POLICE AND COMMUNITY WORK CLOSER TOGETHER I
T IS OFTEN diffi cult to fi nd an appropriate venue to hold meetings. In St. Nicholas Ward, Shoreham Free Church have kindly offered the use of their hall to hold neighbourhood panel meetings with PCSO Amy Hollin. PCSO Knight is working with residents of Shoreham Beach neighbourhood Panel. Some of the issues being targeted are speeding of vehicles and the new footbridge. PCSO Knight will be talking to offi cials about the lighting levels of the bridge, traffi c fl ow of pedestrians and bike users who are currently not allowed to cycle across the present bridge.
Crime prevention Recently there has been a spate of thefts from boats in local marinas. Anyone owning a boat must be aware and remove any valuables that can be removed for safe keeping. Other property can be security marked using various means. Ultra violet marker pens are very useful for this purpose. Anyone requiring advice on crime prevention can contact us using details below. There has been another recent spate of theft of metal from properties. Heronsdale School has been a victim of this once again. Two males were stop checked by Police Offi cers, who were then 4 INSIDE 0509.indd 4

subsequently arrested for suspicion of theft. A large amount of various metals were recovered and Sussex Police are now seeking aggrieved parties to come forward. The image below shows a small amount that was recovered. Please be vigilant and if you have any information regarding this, please report to Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111.
We are lucky to have a wide range of birds living and breeding in the diverse environments that make up Adur District, from the sea birds on the coast to rare birds of prey on the Downs. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, all wild birds are protected and it is an offence to intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird, or to intentionally take or destroy any egg. Despite the law to protect them, however, Sussex birds are being persecuted. For example, the peregrine falcon re-colonised Sussex as a breeding species in 1990 after along absence. There is one nesting site in Adur, but there is evidence that this site has already been illegally disturbed. Buzzards and falcons have been found shot and poisoned. Even fi nches (e.g. chaffi nch and greenfi nch) have been trapped to sell as caged songbirds. Operation Eyrie has been launched by Sussex Wildlife Crime Offi cers to encourage people to report any unusual activity involving birds or nesting sites. If you see anything suspicious, please call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 Contact your local PCSO via the Sussex Police website www.sussex.police.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065 22/4/09 12:24:24

Murdered to Death Who dunnit? Who shot Mildred in her own country house at the start of a weekend party? The bungling Inspector Pratt will be on the case in “Murdered to Death” by Peter Gordon, an hilarious spoof in the best Agatha Christie tradition. The play, set in the 1930s, is Wick Theatre Company’s contribution to the Adur Festival. In true Christie style, Mildred’s guests prove to be a strange assortment. First to arrive are Colonel Charles Craddock and his wife Margaret (Paul Checkley and Diane Robinson). It soon turns out that the bluff Charles is an old fl ame of Mildred’s, and she’d like him back! Pierre Marceau, a French art dealer (Adrian Kenward) who sold two pictures to Mildred in Paris, is another guest, plus the posh and fashionable Elizabeth Hartley-Trumpington (Sophie Lane). Mildred’s companion, her niece Dorothy, doesn’t appear to trust either of them. Then there’s Bunting the oddest of butlers who’s much too fond of the best sherry. Judith Berrill appears as Mildred, Kati Szeless is Dorothy, and Ray Hopper is Bunting. Joan Maple (Anna Quick), a near neighbour, calls and wangles an invitation to dinner. She has the unenviable reputation of attracting murders wherever she goes, and sure enough, when Mildred goes into the dining room, the fatal shot is fi red. Enter Inspector Pratt, England’s answer to Inspector Clouseau, aided by Constable Tompkins. Pratt will be played by Guy Steddon, and the constable by Tom Harris. It soon becomes clear that the murderer isn’t fi nished yet, but will the villain be caught before everyone else meets their doom, or will the audience die laughing fi rst? With over 500 successful productions to its credit, the play is a hit wherever it goes. And under the direction of Bob Ryder, this awardwinning company will be bringing its own touch of class to a wonderfully entertaining night at the theatre.
Performances run from Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 June at 7.45pm. Venue is the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick. Tickets cost £8.50 for Wednesday and Thursday, and £9.00 for Friday and Saturday. They are available from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk
TOLLBRIDGE BIKE RIDE
T
HE OLD SHOREHAM Tollbridge, offi cially opened by HRH The Duke of York on the 18th October 2009, is now fully restored to its former glory and back to being an important role in providing a green alternative to the A27; from horse riders, dog walkers, cyclists, ramblers, bird watchers to fi shermen as well as an access point for the Airport and Ricardos. Much of the original timber was reused and where this could not be done replacement timber called Greenheart was obtained from sustainabllity managed forests in Guyana. Although the majority of the cost of the restoration has been raised,
in order to get work started in March 2008 the Old Shoreham Tolbridge Community Trust persuaded West Sussex County Council to undertake the defi cit. The bad news is that in return the Trust has agreed to repay the defi cit. One of the fundraising event is the annual sponsored cycle ride which this year will start at Ricardos (off the A27 beside the Tollbridge) on Sunday 5th July 2009 and will enable all cyclists to ride over the restored bridge. There will be four cycle rides, from a short fi ve miles along the River Adur for youngsters and the less confi dent, to a challenging 38 miles into the Weald to

There are no major roads or big climbs, refreshment and toilet stops have been arranged, marshals will be in place with route signs along the way as well as mechanics and a sweep van if required. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and fi nancial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
The rush for fixed rate mortgages I
HAVE BEEN writing recently that people should consider fi xing their mortgage rates. There are many factors to be taken into account, but generally whilst rates are this low a competitive fi xed rate deal could be just the thing to keep your payments low for a few years. There are many factors to take into account when working out the best deal for you. If your current mortgage deal is ending, then you could fi nd you will revert to a low tracker rate. You may not want to pay extra for the privilege of fi xing. If, however, your lender is reverting you to a higher standard variable rate then you could make a monthly saving by taking one of the low fi xed rate deals, you would also be securing the lower payments for a period of time. This week saw a worrying sign, one the largest lenders increased their fi xed rates. This may be just an adjustment, but hopefully it is not a sign of things to come. When lenders see people opting for a certain type of rate, such as fi xed rates, they will often start to increase them. This is what happened recently with the variable tracker rates. Each time Bank of England cut the base rate, the lenders increased the margins they were charging above bank base. They knew that people wanted variable rates, and they secured borrowers in the most profi table way possible. The tracker rates now seem broadly uncompetitive, especially when there are no more cuts likely. The market has swayed towards fi xed rate deals. This makes sense when the bank base rate is so low, with likelihood of increases at some point in the future. The problem is that nobody knows when those increases will come.
When predictions are that rates will rise, people start looking for security and this is why many have rushed to secure the low fixed rate mortgages. When predictions are that rates will rise, people start looking for security and this is why many have rushed to secure the low fi xed rate mortgages. The two year fi xed rates are the lowest, but three and fi ve year deals are now popular as people seek fi nancial stability for the longer term. A fi xed
rate mortgage which is affordable to you could be just the thing to see you through. Many of the current deals still come with a free valuation and legal costs covered. If there is an arrangement fee then this is generally added to the loan, so if you don’t have money for upfront fees, don’t let this put you off.
Whatever your circumstances, a good independent adviser will be able to show you the options and help you make the right choice. At Talk Money we offer a FREE initial consultation and whole of market advice. If you would like assistance with a mortgage or any other financial matter, please call me, Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help.

Suor Angelica & Pagliacci SUOR ANGELICA: Tragedy, suicide, redemption… PAGLIACCI: Romance, jealousy, revenge…
S
OUTHWICK OPERA IS proud to present a double bill of two short operas. This will be the third time that the company has performed Leoncavallo’s PAGLIACCI but the fi rst time that Puccini’s little-performed SUOR ANGELICA has been presented. Written as one third of “Il Trittico”, Suor Angelica is the tragic story of a young nun, Sister Angelica, sent to a convent by her wealthy, noble family for having a child out of wedlock. After hearing the news of her son’s death, she poisons herself, pleading for redemption of her sin, suicide. The opera features the beautiful and stirring aria “Senza Mamma”. “Laugh Pagliaccio, and everyone will applaud” – but laughter turns to tears as the clown becomes entangled in a fatal love triangle. Pagliacci, the much loved story of romance, jealousy and revenge among a group of travelling players has been an audience favourite since its premiere in 1892 and features one of opera’s fi nest tenor arias “Vesti la giubba” – “On with the Motley”. Director/Conductor SIMON GRAY has assembled a fi ne cast of singers for these two operas with Crawley-based soprano HELEN HARDWICK in the title role of Suor Angelica, appearing for the fi rst time with Southwick Opera. Helen has appeared with opera companies all over the South of England and regularly performs as soloist with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra. Also making her fi rst appearance with the company is mezzo-soprano MICHELE RESTIEUX from Brighton in the role of the Princess, Angelica’s

aunt. Michele performs regularly with local opera companies and also with the Festival des Arts in Chantrezac in France. Other roles are played by Southwick Opera regulars ANTHEA MYALL from Brighton, ALISON BARAK from Shoreham and sixteen-yearold up and coming soprano JODIE SPENCER from Brighton. Heading the cast of Pagliacci is Brighton based professional actor/singer MARK LANAHAN in the role of Canio. Mark has toured in plays all over Britain and Europe and although this is his fi rst operatic role he is no stranger to opera as he sings internationally with the famous “The Three Waiters”. Playing Nedda, Canio’s unfaithful wife, is Burgess Hill based soprano KAREN ORCHIN – no stranger to Southwick audiences having previously sung roles such as Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, Desdemona in Otello and Phyllis in Iolanthe. Baritone ROB PIATT from Lancing makes a welcome return to the company as Silvio, Nedda’s lover, having previously played Ben in The Telephone and Billy in Carousel. The cast is completed by JONATHAN NULTY from Worthing as Beppe and WILLIAM REVELS from Rustington as Tonio. The two operas have the full backing of the Southwick Opera Chorus and Orchestra. Tickets are £10.50 - £12.50 (£9 concessions on selected nights) and are available from the Barn Theatre Box Offi ce on 01273 597094 or online: www.ticketlord.com/barn.htm

RUID RETURNS TO the UK with Synge’s best-known work and one of their most widely-acclaimed productions, THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD, which will commemorate the 100th anniversary of J.M. Synge’s death. The savagely funny THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD was the fi rst play staged by Druid in 1975 and since then their production has thrilled audiences all around the world playing to critical acclaim in New York, Edinburgh, Perth, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Washington. Credited with staging the defi nitive Playboy, Druid and Tony-Award winning director Garry Hynes masterfully balance the darkness and comedy of Synge’s great comic masterpiece. THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD tells the story of Christy Mahon, who stumbles into a public house in County Mayo claiming he has killed his father and so capturing the
imagination of the locals and the romantic attention of the daughter of the house, Pegeen Mike. Aaron Monaghan reprises the role of Christy following his stunning portrayal of Cripple Billy in The Cripple of Inishmaan, a role that earned him a Best Actor nomination at the 2008 Irish Times Theatre Awards. Princess Bariantinsky STRIKING GRAVE in the churchyard of St Nicholas in Old Shoreham is that of Lydia Yavorska. To the North of the church, it features the fi gure of a saint, set in a bluetiled recess. The intriguing inscription describes her as: 'Princess Bariatinsky, wife of John Pollock.' Born Lidia Borisovna von Hubbenet, in Kiev, Russia in 1869, Lydia Yavorska was one of four sisters, all of whom became actresses. Like many Russians of the day she studied in Paris, and was fl uent in both French and English. In 1896 Lydia married Prince Vladimir Bariatinsky, from a Royal Russian house, taking the title of Princess Bariatinsky. His parents however disapproved of him marrying an actress and perhaps because of this the couple moved to London in 1909. Here she was almost immediately a success on the stages of the West End, and also on the literary scene. At a London garden party she met the American writers Henry James and Ezra Pound, an incident later recalled in Pound’s ‘Cantos’. Lydia appeared her own touring productions of plays written both by her fi rst husband, and by writers including Zola, Strindberg and Gorky. She was from many reports a strong-willed actress. A reviewer of the time describes how the young male director of a production of Chekov’s ‘The Seagull’ by the Aldephi Players was “unable to compel Princess Bariatinsky to behave as she should”. Between 1909 to 1911, Lydia appeared in both Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s ‘Hedda Gabler’ and ‘A Dolls House’ in London. The critic Miriam Alice Franc describes her as “the most successful of the foreign interpreters of Ibsen, her strange fi erce type of acting making her a theatrical sensation.” Lydia was equally formidable when it came to other matters in her life. During Parisian fashion designer Paul Poiret’s apprenticeship at the Worth couture house, he designed a plain black wool cloak cut like a kimono for the young Lydia. On seeing it she is said to have cried out, “What horror; with us, when there are low fellows who run after our sledges and annoy us, we have their 22 INSIDE 0509.indd 22

A
heads cut off, and we put them in sacks just like that”. Lydia Yavorska had great sympathy with the growing women’s suffrage movement, campaigning both for women to have the vote and greater rights in society. In 1911, in the week of King George V’s coronation, the largest demonstration of the suffragette’s campaign, ‘The Coronation Suffrage Pageant’, took place in the centre of London. These ‘four miles of women marching towards one goal’ included the spectacular pageant of the Actresses’ Franchise League. This was led by Lydia Yavorska riding a house and dressed as Ibsen’s female character ‘Hedda Gabler’. For much of the period of World War One and the Russian Revolution, Lydia lived in Russia. Like many other formerly wealthy people she suffered great hardship at this time due to food and fuel shortages. These deprivations were later said to be a contributing factor in her early death. In 1915, Lydia was the chairman of the London Committee of the Great Britain To Poland Fund, which raised money from the British public to help those in Poland severely affected by the confl ict. Over the next few years Lydia held
charity matinees of plays to raise funds for the Russian people. These included a production of Russian writer Leo Tolstoy’s ‘Anna Karenina’ in November 1918, where it was noted on the playbill “Madame Yavorska decided to give half the proceeds of the visit to the British and Russian Red Cross funds”. Lydia had divorced Prince Bariatinsky in 1916, and the adaptor of this production of ‘Anna Karenina’ was the playwright John Pollock, who became her second husband in 1920. Sadly, she died only a year after her marriage, on September 3rd 1921 at her home in Carlisle Road, Hove. She was aged 52. John Pollock survived his wife living on until 1963. A memorial service for Lydia Yavorska was held in the Russian Church in London. An auction soon after sold seven hundred items including her furs, costumes and jewellery. There is a portrait of Lydia in the V & A, and her grave in St. Nicholas Churchyard remembers how “She devoted her life and gifts to the worship of beauty and to the cause of freedom.” Judy Upton Judy’s next stage play ‘The Ballad Of A Thin Man’ will be at the Ropetackle Centre from Thursday 21st – Saturday 23rd of May.

ET TO KNOW what’s really going on in your local area by coming along to Southwick’s Information Fair on 14 May at Southwick Community Centre. Organised by AOPN (Adur Older Persons’ Network) the Fair showcases
24 INSIDE 0509.indd 24
many of the voluntary organisations, clubs and societies active in and around Southwick. “It’s a day with no age limit!” says AOPN Team Co-ordinator, Val Garland. “It’s a chance for local residents to come along, peruse the stands, ask questions, get more involved or access a new service if you so wish.” Many of the groups attending aim to give older people a practical helping hand - such as with gardening, shopping or getting out and about. But there are also lots of opportunities to join social and leisure groups or learn a new skill as a volunteer for one of the organisations. “We’ve had a really enthusiastic response to the Fair and several key AOPN member groups have booked to attend, including Guild Care, University
of the Third Age (U3A), Community Alarms/Care and Repair, Handyvan, 4Sight, and Southlanders”, says Val. “Our aim is to provide a central point of contact for people living in the area so they can fi nd out what’s available on their doorstep - services which can really help to sustain an independent and healthy lifestyle. There will also be an opportunity to discuss health and pensions issues with representatives from the Community Partnership Team and the DWP. The Information Fair runs from 10.30am to 4pm in the Barn Hall, Southwick Community Centre. Entry is free and refreshments are available throughout the day. For more information or to book an exhibition stand (voluntary organisations only) please contact AOPN on: 01273 900453.
