Hello Welcome to the May edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. Well Spring is definitely here and it is so lovely to see the spring blossom on the trees. The early morning sun certainly adds a spring to ones step. With the great weather we are now having isn’t it a great time to get out in our gardens, so with that very thought in mind, this month, we have the latest garden tips from Mark getting the garden going, including what is the best way to make your own compost We also have many local events and local plays this month. Please do go through this months copy. Unfortunately, there are too many things that I can’t mention in this short space. On that note, I wish you a fabulous month and we will see you in June. ocal funny man ‘H’ Reeves has attracted some of the finest comedic talent in Shoreham and Southwick to present Just for Laughs – a comedy review show to be staged at The Barn Theatre in June by the award winning Southwick Players. The comedy show will include stand-up routines, comedy song and dance numbers, comic verse and sketches – all designed to have the audiences crying (with laughter) in the aisles. ‘H’, who is directing the show assisted by Southwick Players members Ian Churchill and Sally Diver, said, ‘ So what is Just for Laughs? It’s something old, it’s something new, it’s something borrowed but not too blue. f you aRe self employed and looking for a mortgage, times could be tricky. Previously you could fall back on self certification mortgages, but as these have disappeared from the market you could find things much more difficult. Now income has to be proved, which puts you in a totally different situation to before. So, what do lenders look for from self employed people? When you are self employed your accountant will always try and minimise your income, meaning less tax to pay. This is fine, but now you have to prove your income to get a mortgage this can seriously impede the amount you can borrow.

There are a couple of lenders who will use your profit figures, and your salary, but if we are to approach those lenders, you would need to fit all of their lending criteria, which may not be the case. These may be the lenders who don’t offer the best rates for your situation.

Sole traders and partnerships If you are a sole trader your net profit will be used as income. Some lenders will use the average of the last two or three years, some will use the most recent year’s figure if this is the highest. Some people think lenders will use the gross income figures, the actual income into your company. This is not the case, the lenders will use the net income, ie the income after expenses, the amount you pay tax on. This is the figure you would normally try to minimise. If you are trading as a partnership, the lender will use your percentage share of the net profit figures.

What about Limited Companies? Some individuals trade as a Limited Company which can be very tax efficient. Income is normally taken as a small salary, plus dividends. Most people in this situation just take what they need, which makes sense. They don’t take all of the profit from the company as income, they leave it there. This is fine, and makes sense, but most lenders don’t take a very ﬂexible view on this. Most will take literally only the money you have taken from the company as income, ie the salary and dividends. So, if your company has made thousands but you left it in the company, this will not be taken as income. So, if you are working in this way, and you know you may be looking for a mortgage soon, it might be worth speaking to a financial adviser such as myself to discuss your situation. Sometimes, in current times, it may be worth planning how you take your income from your company. Once you are clear, then you can turn to your accountant for advice. 6

In the past few of weeks, across both wards, we have had a couple of incidents where males have knocked on front and back doors of properties reporting to be from the council. These are not genuine council workers and we would like to remind you not to allow anyone access to your property without checking ID. If you deem it necessary phone the company they say they are representing. If in doubt keep them out and call 999 in an mergency.

A polite reminder to the parents and carers that drive children to the local schools on the ward, please park safely and sensibly. Parking on Zig Zag lines, Double Yellow Lines, Junctions and in Bus Stops is dangerous and illegal. Fixed Penalty Notices will be issued to those drivers seen parking in dangerous positions.

Getting the garden going w

ell I Hope you all made the most of the lovely double bank holiday weekends over Easter. A great chance to get out in the garden, get some work done and just enjoy the garden at this time of year. I’ve managed to get a whole array of seeds and seedlings planted and I can almost taste the fruits of my labour, with the strawberry plants fattening up nicely ready for Wimbledon in a few weeks time! One of the big problems many people have in the garden is composting and how to actually make it work. We go into so many gardens where there is just a large moulding heap of mess sitting in the corner, which will still be there in years to come, with more being added to it. If a compost heap is done properly it can produce wonderful results, which help cut down on the trips to the dump and save money in the garden centres avoiding the need to buy compost. One of the first mistakes people make is siting the heap. Because most containers are not the nicest thing to look at, they get shoved away in a dark corner of the garden out of sight. The problem with this is they are invariably in a shady corner, where they get little sun and heat. The heat is essential to start the process and encourage the microorganisms to do their work in breaking down the waste. So if you can put it somewhere where it will get sun, so much the better. It’s also better to have it closer to the house, as you are more likely to make the trip from the kitchen to place waste material in it, rather than 10

walking all the way down the garden. The most important thing is what goes into it and how it is put in. It is important to have a good mix of material. Woody items are needed to help give the compost some body, but general waste and grass mowings are needed to help introduce nitrogen, so good for plants, and to the help the process along. The heap should have a good mixture and it is important that you do not build up layers of each, like a big lasagne. The compost needs to be able to breath to allow the process to work, so every now and then give it a good mix up with a fork. In terms of kitchen waste, you should only put in raw vegetable peelings, as any cooked items won’t break down, and scraps such as meat will attract vermin. Other waste such as tea bags, shredded newspaper or coffee grinds are also ideal. Another mistake we often see is that people put the bins on paving slabs or concrete. If you can avoid this it is better for it to be on the bare soil. This allows the worms and bacteria to get up into the heap and speed things up. I sometimes pop some worms in that get dug up to help as well. A well worked heap can be ready in 4-6 months. It will give you a real sense of satisfaction seeing a rich dark compost come out of the bottom, knowing it was free and it helped cut down on the waste. It is quite amazing how much waste will fit into an average sized bin. If you don’t like the look of the plastic bins, then it’s a relatively in-expensive option to have a

timber one made up to suit your garden. Hopefully that’s inspired some of you to give it a try and get rid of the big smelly mess sitting in the garden, I’m not sure how many more of them I can face clearing! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Pirates of Penzance

veR 50 younGsteRs aged 8-18 years old, will take to the stage in swashbuckling style in June for Brighton Theatre Group Youth’s (BTGY) Broadway revival production of The Pirates of Penzance (Pirates). ‘Pirates’ is a comic opera in two acts, with music by the renowned Victorian partnership of composer Arthur Sullivan and librettist W.S. Gilbert. Gilbert and Sullivan collaborated on

fourteen comic operas and ‘Pirates’ is a full on musical romp full of great songs, larger than life characters and great comedy – essential ingredients for a family show and loved by audiences for over 100 years. Thirty years ago Broadway decided to give the show its own special touch and the revival has played to packed houses since then and been made into a film. With superb performances from 17 year old Laurence Young (from Lewes) as the Pirate King and 16 year old Rory Maguire (from Hove) as the Major General the cast offers a wealth of young talent in the guise of the General’s daughters, policemen and pirates. Fifteen year old Ollie Wray (from Brighton) plays the love struck pirate Frederick with Frances Wood (15, from Rottingdean) taking the female lead as Mabel. ‘Pirates’ tells the story of Frederic, who, at 21 years old, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

Political Skulduggery In Shoreham

n 1701, a Mr Nathaniel Gould, a prospective parliamentary candidate for Shoreham visited the town. Hoping to be elected, he sent the town crier to shout out the message for all voters to go to the King’s Arms where they would receive a guinea each to “drink to Mr Gould’s health”. Most voters accepted the guinea and Mr Gould was duly elected as Member of Parliament. The defeated candidate for the seat then petitioned Parliament citing Gould’s bribery of the voters. The House expelled Gould, but at the next vote, Shoreham voters promptly re-elected him. In 1751 it was noted by Dr. Burton that the townsfolk of Shoreham “get rich every seven years by pocketing gifts for their votes.” Things were not about to get better. It is not known when an organisation called the Christian Society or Christian Club of Shoreham was founded. It was certainly thriving in the 1700s, having been formed to distribute charity to the town’s poor. Whether or not the poor did actually receive much money from the society it subject to speculation. A scheme drawn up in 1767 was very elaborate but the sums it intended paying out were extremely small and there is no record as to whether the payout even happened. Never the less the Christian Society met monthly at The Star Inn, when a ﬂag would be raised to indicate a meeting was taking place. Members of the Christian Society had to be elected and the only people elected to it were those who were already a parliamentary elector of the

St. Mary’s church, the chosen venue for elections in Shoreham

Borough of New Shoreham. In 1770 less than 150 men in Shoreham held that privilege and of those 80 were members of the society. When a new member was elected he had to give the Society a bond of £500, which in those days was a tidy sum. Furthermore he must vow ‘to keep secret the affairs of the club, and not to break it up.’ Once a man had joined, resigning from the Society was not an option. The society had a regular clerk, but not a committee, unless an emergency occurred at which time a ‘special committee’ consisting of five members might be elected. In 1770, Shoreham was not a municipal borough and did not have its own charter or mayor. Being a manor, its local officers were appointed by the Lord of the Manor’s Court Leet. The only local officers appointed in Shoreham were the High Constable and the Town Crier. The role of High Constable involved being the returning officer at election time, and the post in 1770 was occupied by a sail-maker named Mr. Hugh Roberts.

When Sir Samuel Cornish, one of the borough members of the council died, a by-election was held in St. Mary’s church to choose a new parliamentary member. Until 1826 the church remained the chosen venue elections in Shoreham. It was at this time an open rather than secret ballot, and five candidates came down from London, with their agents, to be interviewed by a committee from the Christian Society at the Star Inn. Of these three candidates were chosen to stand, with Thomas Rumbold polling 87 votes, John Purling receiving 37 and William James, 4. The returning officer however queried 76 of Rumbold’s votes and elected the second place Purling instead. This act in itself was illegal but it turned out that the returning officer, a member of the Christian Society himself, had discovered that the club had negotiated the sale of its members’ votes to the highest bidder. Eighty-one members of the Christian Society were prosecuted and stripped of the right to vote in future elections. The constituency was enlarged to increase the whole of the Bramber area, which meant there were 1,300 voters instead of 130. The idea being that a larger number of voters meant too many people for anyone to afford to bribe them. This endeavour was not entirely successful as it really just meant in future the candidates for election had to be considerably richer. It seemed that political skulduggery in Shoreham would continue in one shape or another for some time yet. Judy Upton

oR tHe fIRst time in their 30 year history Adur Theatre Company (ATC) will present a full- length musical theatre production in this year’s Adur Festival. Directed and musically directed by Mark Hall, assisted by Sarah Milner, A Ring of Roses by Darren Vallier will be performed at The Shoreham Centre, Pond Road, Shoreham-by-Sea from June 1-4. A Ring of Roses is set in 1665, during 16

the devastation of the plague and is loosely based on historical fact. Through music and words it tells the story of a group of children separated from their village and families to safeguard them from the ravages of the plague. A beautiful musical score, often haunting, also includes some comic relief and leads the audience through tragedy and laughter to a positive conclusion.

Mark Hall said, ‘We had a huge interest in the show with over 60 adults and children turning up to audition. Admission price has been kept the same for the fourth year running, yet there will again be over 60 casks of beer and cider available all sourced by our beer-master. Together with its pleasant gardens, live music, homecooked food plus barbecue it’s a great way to relax with friends over a pint or two! Cask Sponsorship The aim of the Beer Festival is to raise income for Southwick Community Association, which is then used to upgrade facilities and further develop the Centre for all sections of the local community to enjoy. With over 60 casks of real ale and cider available, we are inviting local individuals and businesses to support the festival by way of a sponsorship of just £50 per cask. This will also include their name on the cask, entry in the Festival Programme as well as two complimentary tickets for a session of their choice. Alternatively a second package is available at a bargain £25 per cask. As we are expecting more than 1000 people to come through our doors over the weekend this gives an excellent opportunity for contributors to be part of what has become a very high profile local community event.
