It’s great to be back Welcome to RISE magazine – your guide to making the most of your visit to ISE 2022. By Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events

The industry that comes to the Fira in May will not be the same as the one that came to ISE 2020. It has been transformed

Integrated Systems Europe is the world’s leading event for professional audiovisual and systems integration. We are delighted to welcome the whole of the industry — technology suppliers, solution providers, integrators, distributors, AV endusers and more — to our new home: Fira de Barcelona Gran Vía. However, the industry that comes to the Fira in May will not be the same as the one that came to ISE 2020. It has been transformed. It has had to cope with adversity and to adapt to what we’ve all experienced over the past two years or so. The pandemic has had a variety of effects across different sectors. It has accelerated some trends — particularly those around remote working and meeting. But for live events — a sector that we serve, as well as being a part of — it was a catastrophe; it was like a tap had been suddenly turned off, and everyone had to think creatively about workable alternatives. We held half a dozen RISE Spotlight online events between November 2019 and April 2020, which taught us some valuable lessons about hosting online events. And rather than holding a single international in-person event in 2020, we staged two local events, in

Barcelona and London, supported by a wealth of video content on the ISE Digital platform. Now, as Europe opens up again and business continues on a steady upward trajectory, we are hosting our first full ISE show in Barcelona. We have five huge exhibition halls in this wonderful modern convention centre, featuring six Technology Zones; a week-long conference programme; professional development sessions from our co-owning associations AVIXA and CEDIA; and new demo facilities for a broad range of technologies. You can read more about all of these in the pages of this magazine. I'm delighted that ISE is joining forces with IOT Solutions World Congress, which takes place in Hall 4 at the Fira Gran Vía on 10-12 May. Like ISE, IOTSWC is all about technology that brings about digital transformation across a wide variety of vertical market sectors. It's an opportunity for us all to find out more about exciting and important topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, Internet of Things and Quantum Computing. During the lockdown, some people began to question whether the traditional trade show format would still be relevant after the restrictions

had been lifted. But as soon as shows started up again, these doubts evaporated. We are social animals — and while conversing via screens is convenient and time-saving, it doesn’t provide the effectiveness and depth of contact of face-to-face meeting. And for our industry in particular, we are in the business of creating experiences — which means that our innovations have to be experienced at first hand. No amount of reading spec sheets, browsing websites or watching YouTube videos comes close to seeing pin-sharp images on ultrahigh-definition displays, or hearing music with clarity and power played over a line array. Then there are the other elements that trade shows can bring. The exciting new technologies that you discover by accident. The chance meeting with an old colleague that reveals a valuable business opportunity. And the feeling of belonging to an industry that has come together once again — to reconnect, to continue to evolve, to catalyse new initiatives. We’re very excited about what 2022 will bring. Rise up. Reimagine. Ignite the Future. See you in Barcelona!

Welcome: AVIXA

Welcome to ISE 2022: AVIXA

A time to reunite By David Labuskes, CTS, Chief Executive Officer, AVIXA

When the doors open at the Fira Barcelona, Gran Vía, AV professionals will be met with an industry reunion where connections are made, careers are enhanced and commerce is conducted

I’ve had the privilege of welcoming many of you to the ISE show each year. And ISE 2022 will give me the most pleasure. Because this year we will welcome you to our new home in Barcelona — a vibrant city known for its creativity and innovation. When the doors open at the Fira Barcelona, Gran Vía, AV professionals will be met with an industry reunion where connections are made, careers are enhanced and commerce is conducted. Our world has gone through an amazingly difficult period since we gathered for ISE 2020. Although many of us joined together in June 2021, either at our Barcelona or London events, many of you are returning to ISE for the first time in two years. This show will provide us with an opportunity to experience the countless innovations that our exhibitors have created over these difficult times. The show will give us an opportunity to restrengthen the relationships that fuel our industry

and those innovations. We will hear, see and touch the technologies that are our present and our future. AVIXA is excited to present many education opportunities at the show for AV professionals to enhance their careers. The AV Experience Zone will return with four days of sessions presented in Spanish that will explore AV in the retail, corporate, education and hospitality markets. For those preparing for their Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) exams, we’ll have a CTS walk-in centre where experts and trainers are available to answer questions. Test taking is available throughout show days at the nearby Pearson VUE test centre. We’ll also be hosting several member events, such as the German CTS breakfast, Italian members’ breakfast, the French AV User Club meeting, and AVIXA Women’s Council and AVIXA Diversity Council events. I am certain none of us will take our time for granted at the show. I believe that each of us will approach ISE with

not only anticipation and excitement but also with a deep appreciation for the human connection — the chance to be surprised by a connection made or a lesson learned. Enjoy every moment of it. We’ve learned just how special an event like this can be. I’m grateful and humbled to lead AVIXA and, in partnership with CEDIA, can’t wait to welcome you to Integrated Systems Europe 2022 in May. Together we have and will rise up. We will reimagine. And we will ignite the future.

Welcome: CEDIA

Welcome to ISE 2022: CEDIA

Building a strong future Daryl Friedman, Global President & CEO, CEDIA

As a portal to discover new technologies and forge partnerships, ISE is a critical hub for the home technology marketplace

Timing is everything. ISE's move to May is right on time. COVID cases are dropping, restrictions are relaxing, and travel is resuming. For many of us, ISE will be the first inperson event since early 2020. For manufacturers, integrators and consumers, the timing has produced an unprecedented awareness of the importance of AV and integrated systems, as our homes and other spaces require us to be more connected. And, if I may add a personal note about timing, I’m excited to introduce myself as CEDIA’s new Global President and CEO at this unique time in our industry. Working at the association for the home technology industry, all of us at CEDIA have seen how the most important aspects of our lives — work, learning, entertainment, family life — are more centred around the home than they have been at any time since the industrial revolution. It’s become the hub of modern life, and it’s time to treat it as such.

CEDIA is the organisation to help us transition to a life focused on the home. The opportunities that lie ahead for home technology professionals are boundless. It’s our job at CEDIA — and our proud and profound responsibility — to foster a business environment where our members and industry can capitalise on that opportunity and thrive. As a portal to discover new technologies and forge partnerships, ISE is a critical hub for the home technology marketplace.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to take our Cabling & Infrastructure Technician (CIT) Certification examination at the show for the very first time. This new industry certification has been designed from the ground up to meet international standards for personnel certification. As home technology services enter the mainstream, the CIT certification will be one of the markers of professionalism for the industry.

No doubt, the ISE 2022 show floor will be a marker for many of these key trends and business opportunities. Beyond the show floor, ISE 2022 is also a major focus for CEDIA’s comprehensive training offering.

Where better to learn and develop your skills and professional knowledge than at ISE 2022?

Once again, we’re hosting an extensive professional development programme to provide everything attendees need in this fast-developing world of technology. With education tracks focused on technical courses, emerging trends and business success, these sessions are taught by global industry experts and will give all attendees profound insights, advice and increased knowledge on important industry topics. Courses will be available in English and Spanish.

Much of my time at ISE will be spent meeting with members and other industry stakeholders, hearing all about their needs and challenges, what CEDIA is doing well, what we can improve on and more. When you stop by the CEDIA booth or see me on the show floor, please introduce yourself. Along with my colleagues, I’m looking forward to connecting with as many of you as possible and listening to your views so that we can plan what’s next, new, and better for our programmes. Timing is everything, and this is our time to build a strong future for businesses in the home technology industry. And that future starts now.

Voices of ISE A selection of exhibitors share what ISE means to them, the business benefits it brings and what they’re looking forward to on the show floor in 2022. We are social animals and in-person meetings are essential to maintaining old and establishing new relationships — it’s all about the people! As a start-up that’s changing a paradigm it’s critical to be seen at ISE, to reinforce messaging and to ensure our partners and customers see Utelogy as a permanent player in the market. Jonathan Mangnall, Managing Director, Utelogy EMEA

ISE continues to be a vital connection point for our industry across the residential and commercial spaces. We are eagerly anticipating this year’s show as a platform to showcase the many awardwinning and category-defining solutions that have been released since the last time we were all together in person. Crestron is deeply committed to dealer success, and we look forward to the conversations and the opportunity to develop new business at ISE 2022. Brad Hintze, Executive VP, Marketing, Crestron

L-Acoustics Creations has a special relationship with ISE in that this division of L-Acoustics was first announced and launched at ISE 2020. That would, of course, be one of the last inperson trade shows for a long time. Two years later, we return to ISE with a robust project pipeline and a growing network of integrator partners. Our credo to ‘bring the concert home’ and elevate home entertainment with unrivalled pro audio sound systems continues to be received with enthusiasm in the marketplace. Nick Fichte, Global Business Manager, L-Acoustics Creations

ISE is the most important event in the industry and, for nsign.tv, it is a must attend show and the place to be to generate valuable leads and meet potential partners. Of course, going back to in-person events will add a lot of value as we will be able to walk the show and see how the industry plans to face upcoming years and provide technology to an ongoing digital transformation process. As a local company we couldn’t be more excited to host ISE 2022 in Barcelona. Toni Viñals Burés, CEO & Founder, nsign.tv

At Christie, we are very much looking forward to returning to ISE and meeting our partners and customers face-to-face once again. ISE has always been a European benchmark for us with many memorable product launches during our 18-year association with the show. 2022 will be special as we reunite to share our new and exciting AV solutions and ignite everyone’s imaginations. Arlonna Seymour, Executive Director, Corporate Marketing, Christie

ISE has helped us grow from a small start-up manufacturer into a leading player in the AV industry. It gave us access to clients and users that otherwise may have never heard from us. And, by impressing the attendees, we were able to further establish our brand while expanding our distributor network. The move to the Fira enabled us to book a larger stand, meaning our new booth will be bigger and more impressive than ever before. We are therefore thrilled to showcase the new products we have in store for 2022. Tom Van de Sande, CEO, Audac

ISE remains our number one exhibition where we can showcase the newest Lightware developments to a wide AV audience, and it also helps a lot to boost our brand awareness and reputation. These two aspects and dynamics work much better in-person than they do online. We consider ISE to be one of the most important events of our industry. Gergely Vida, Owner & Founder, Lightware Visual Engineering

Education

Solutions to engage all students The growth in remote learning has been an important driver of new AV investment and this shows no signs of abating. Discover the latest technology for remote, hybrid and in-person learning at ISE 2022.

The theatres at Harper Adams provide real-time streaming of video, audio and data from campus to campus allowing lectures to be delivered by one person simultaneously in the two locations

Established tools such as interactive displays, document cameras and PTZ/ web cameras remain in high demand in the world of education technology, while devices that enable hybrid learning, such as collaborative tools, UC systems and audio solutions, are also driving investment. Bringing all of these together in an intuitive solution that provides the same experience for learners no matter their location is the aim for many institutions. Queen’s University Belfast recently undertook a comprehensive project with Pure AV to enable the capture of the entire classroom teaching and learning experience, allowing real-time participation and seamless bidirectional engagement between lecturers, in-class students and remote students. This includes a complete integration of traditional AV content sources, physical whiteboards and demonstration areas with lecture capture and collaboration platforms. The user interface is delivered primarily over Microsoft Teams, and the setup ensures that the traditional, familiar tools of the lecture theatre — whiteboards, visualisers and presentation slides — are captured and remain a fully accessible part of the teaching experience, however collaborative the class may be. In

addition, the system can capture and live stream interactions between lecturer and audience, including audience voice and video, with automated camera tracking a key feature. Newbuilds represent a great opportunity to design a holistic AV solution tailored entirely to the needs of teachers and learners. Harper Adams and Keele Universities have joined forces to create a new centre of excellence for veterinary training. A key priority was to ensure that undergraduates access the same high-quality learning experience regardless of their location, with a seamless digital join between the two campuses. In Shropshire, UK, the Harper Adams site includes two lecture theatres, which provide real-time streaming of video, audio and data from campus to campus. The link with Keele is managed via a Poly Group 700 videoconferencing system and two Panasonic PTZ cameras were selected to mirror the facilities already in place at Keele. The AV system is consistent across the four main seminar rooms at Harper Adams. Breakout screens enable students to work in small groups and share outcomes digitally

The lecturer at Queen’s can use the lectern-based PC or connect their device via HDMI, USB-C, or wirelessly via the Mersive Solstice system

with the broader group. There is the choice to connect devices via HDMI or wirelessly using the Airtame system. The use of Wyrestorm AV over IP enables the flexible distribution of content between rooms.

Where to find education technology at ISE 2022 At ISE 2022, the Unified Communications and Education Technology Zone in Hall 2 will host the very latest in education technology solutions. Technology for the education sector will also be present throughout the show from exhibitors that serve the sector alongside other vertical markets. ISE 2022 will also see the launch of the Digital Learning Summit — see pages 46-47 for details.

Enterprise

Equipping the corporate world for the future of work AV technology is helping to create seamless experiences for users no matter where they choose to work from. ISE 2022 will showcase the tools that enable this while also enhancing the physical workplace. space, Zoom-equipped meeting pods and multiple soundproofed meeting rooms. Collaboration is at the heart of the meeting rooms and all are fully equipped Zoom Rooms so global teams can connect easily, with deviceagnostic screen sharing and plug and play screen connectivity for on-the-go meetings.

Thirteen Group’s GoBright solution includes multifunction desk pucs with status LEDs indicating their current availability, complemented by under-desk occupancy sensors and an Outlook-based booking system

Thirteen Group was keen to implement modern workplace technology and maximise desk management and meeting spaces at its new flagship three-storey office in Middlesbrough, UK. The company turned to Visavvi to deliver a comprehensive visitor management system with desk and room booking while also equipping multiple meeting, collaboration and open plan desk spaces. This included the first UK installation of the GoBright workplace management platform. AV technology is in evidence across the building. Poly Studios are used in a number of meeting rooms to keep colleagues and partners connected when working remotely, along with Lenovo ThinkSmart Hub 500 collaboration systems connected to Logitech Rally pan, tilt, zoom cameras. Content sharing is made easy with Barco Clickshares. LED screens have been installed in a variety of sizes throughout the building to provide exceptional viewing of all presentation and meeting content, while digital signage screens relay important organisation information keeping staff and visitors updated.

At fitness clothing brand Gymshark’s new technology-led workspace in the West Midlands, the aim was to put the user at the heart of the building. Solutions were chosen to facilitate innovation and foster creativity across multiple zones, while supporting communication among the more than 600 employees globally and promoting advanced digital collaboration. The space features a podcast studio, ecommerce studios, numerous creative hubs, pods for solo working that feature Poly X Series videoconferencing bars and Samsung screens, open office

Samsung digital signage in common seating areas allows the company to communicate with teams in real-time. In addition, a Lab meeting room used for collaborative meetings features a Samsung 2×2 interactive video wall, Poly G Series videoconferencing and Mural collaboration software. Hospitality

Hotels differentiate themselves with technology The introduction of audiovisual technologies in the hospitality sector has accelerated notably in recent years – and the latest solutions to help hotels to make their offerings stand out and exceed customer expectations can be found throughout ISE 2022. By David Val, Editor at Tecnohotel This system was first installed in the Immersive Art Junior Suite of the Catalonia Passeig de Gràcia hotel in Barcelona. The player-projector, called MK Player360, is an all-in-one projection system for enjoying virtual reality in physical spaces. Thanks to its intuitive control device, guests can manage all the content, generating a new communication channel between the client, the hotel and the tourist destination.

At The Ibiza Twiins, images and videos 540sqm in area can be projected on to the main pool area

Deploying AV technologies has enabled hotels to improve their services and the experience of their customers — people attending events on their premises as well as hotel guests. At the same time, this trend has stimulated the development of innovative solutions for this sector as well as expanding the business of AV suppliers and the channel. At The Ibiza Twiins, an innovative 4-star superior seafront hotel on Ibiza, technology enables the creation of amazing environments and personalised event experiences. These capabilities distinguish it as one of the most modern, innovative and original destinations on the island, with countless resources to make forums, conferences and events memorable and successful. The resort is equipped with customisable RGB illumination. Additionally, it has four 30,000 lumens laser projectors; three LED screens, deployed in the Welcome Area of the Life building (measuring 12.50m x 2.80m), and in the Lounge Bar (7.50m x 0.90m) and Welcome Area (7.60m x 2.80m) of the Joy building; as well

as four customisable informational totems. The resort also features a facility that allows images and videos 540sqm in area to be projected in the main pool area. At Catalonia Hotels & Resorts an outstanding AV system, developed by Broomx Technologies, allows guests to transform their rooms and enjoy immersive experiences in 4D without individual virtual reality devices. This 180º audiovisual projection system offers immersive experiences for families or couples, from a trip to the bottom of the sea, to flying over the Earth in a spaceship.

The system is connected to the BroomxVR platform, which is continually updated with productions by internationally renowned artists. In addition, content can be updated instantly via the online management system; in this way, clients can provide their own content even before they check in, personalising their experience and stay as much as possible.

Where to find hospitality technology at ISE 2022 As the hospitality industry has many and varied uses for AV technology, solutions are on show throughout ISE 2022. For example, you can discover the latest in digital signage solutions in Hall 6, visit Hall 2 for residential and smart building technology, and find the latest audio innovations in Hall 7.

Live events

Live events come back As normal life begins to return post-pandemic, venues and events are investing in new equipment – in some cases to meet new requirements. At ISE 2022 you’ll find a wide array of technology for installation as well as tools to enable hybrid events, streaming and recording. newly equipped with a sound system supplied by d&b partner Producción Técnica TJL. The entire European live event sector came to a sudden halt in the spring of 2020 thanks to Covid-19. With large-scale events off the agenda, many organisers turned their attention to online or hybrid events. As the industry starts to come back in earnest, it’s likely that lessons learned in lockdown will remain relevant. “If there’s one thing I’d say that has accelerated during the pandemic, it’s the fusion of broadcast, AV and videoconferencing technologies through software-defined and IP methodologies,” says Liam Hayter, Senior Solutions Architect, NewTek. “This has given customers the ability to choose best-of-breed technology from these traditionally siloed verticals to adapt to the challenges of remote and socially-distanced participation of live content.”

Residential

Technology design meets aesthetic design Once again, the ISE show floor is a treasure trove of residential solutions. Residential projects require attention to the overall decor as well as the ability to interpret the client’s needs, as these two CEDIA-award winning projects demonstrate.

Care was taken on the Villa Africa project to make the technology as discreetly integrated as possible

This acoustically transparent fibre optic starlight ceiling gives the illusion of added height

Perfect Integration delivered a modern media room in a client’s 8.5m x 6m attic room. The design entailed flipping the room around to fit in seating for eight people, plus a bar area at the back. The team specified a 6,000-lumen projector and provided different calibration settings to match the needs of the two different viewing set-ups: sporting events and movies. The 9.4.4 Dolby Atmos set-up uses Paradigm speakers and subwoofers which, thanks to the construction of new inner walls, were installed in the perfect acoustic positions. The client liked the look of Ralph Lauren wall lights, but these were beyond the budget. Instead a UK manufacturer was found who could make something very similar for a fraction of the cost. Working closely with the supplier to source the best acoustically transparent fabric, Perfect Integration installed an acoustically

transparent fibre optic starlight ceiling. This gives the illusion of being under the stars rather than in a lowceiling attic. For the Villa Africa project, French integrator Henri collaborated with a famous interior designer. Emphasis was placed on ensuring the technology seamlessly integrated and did not take away from the African artwork around the villa. Profiled speakers, furniture-integrated subwoofers and specific finishing for biometric access are examples of the close attention paid to making the technology as discreet as possible. The villa features easily controlled lighting, shades and temperature; music in most rooms and in the garden; three media rooms; video distribution throughout; and a security system consisting of door stations, a perimeter alarm, indoor and outdoor CCTV cameras, and biometric access control at sensitive spots.

The owner requested very highquality audio. In addition to integrating a specific music server in one room, Henri sourced products for the rest of the villa that could be integrated in the interior decor as well as delivering the desired quality of music. Crestron wall-mounted touchscreens, remote controls for the video zones, iPads and iPhone apps were selected to deliver intuitive control. Wall touchscreens are flush-mounted in boxes, while the user interface has been meticulously designed to be ergonomic and intuitive. The client can personalise certain aspects of the system, such as adjusting and creating new lighting scenarios from the touchscreen.

ISE co-owner CEDIA has a wealth of professional development sessions during the show. Additionally, ISE 2022 is playing host to the Superyacht Technology Summit for the first time, on Thursday 12 May — see pages 46-47 for details.

Retail

Enhancing the shoppers’ experience Whether it’s helping to improve the customer journey or creating unique, fun destinations for shoppers to experience, AV technology plays a critical role across the retail landscape. ISE 2022 will have the latest innovations on show across the Fira.

Self-order kiosks introduce interactivity into the restaurant area at Ikea

The Sports Direct concept store boasts the most LED, digital and interactive technology in the Oxford Street shopping district

Nowhere is the importance of AV technology to the retail sector more obvious than in Sports Direct’s new concept store in London’s Oxford Street. This 5,000sqft (465sqm) space features rotating LED pillars, an LED floor-to-ceiling wrap reveal, LED plinths, LED rafts and LED tickers. Spread over four floors, the touchscreen tablets, interactive displays and huge video displays total over 100 million pixels, with each display powered by intelligent, data-driven technology. Interactive highlights include a kids’ selfie mirror that allows children to appear virtually in their favourite team kit; a bespoke jump booth that uses body recognition technology to measure just how high people can leap; and lift-and-learn technologies that give users the opportunity to interact physically with products using their phones.

Ikea’s latest Vienna downtown concept is a fascinating example of how the Swedish retailer disrupts customer journeys that have been learned for decades while adapting to changing consumer needs. The store features extensive digital signage, kiosk terminals, full app integration, a hotel and roof terrace to provide a completely new shopping experience. Of particular interest is the digitisation of the customer journey and the role of digital touchpoints in the store. Well over 100 displays have been installed across the store’s five floors to bridge stationary retail on limited space with ecommerce. The majority of the digital touchpoints are digital posters designed to provide both product inspiration and product information. Interactivity is king at the restaurants, which now feature self-order kiosks similar to QSR restaurant chains. Relatively new to

Insights: Themes of ISE

ISE expert viewpoints

The past two years have seen huge changes in the environment for AV. As the industry prepares for the first full ISE show since 2020, what are the key themes in our major markets? What are the main business and technology trends? Here’s what ISE’s conference chairs have to say.

LIVE EVENTS STEW HUME What changed during the pandemic? With the overnight halting of live events back in 2020, thousands of live events crew were suddenly out of work. Many have had to find other forms of income, and now may not return to the industry. One common issue among event organisers is the lack of crew to call upon. The live events industry needs to make a serious, concerted effort to focus on training to ensure that the next generation of crew are able to meet the inevitable demand when events return to full capacity. Another major thing affecting the live events industry is shortages of raw materials and components used for

manufacturing. An audio desk, for example, has on average 10,000 components – everything from steel, aluminium, glass fibre, copper and gold, all the way to diodes and silicon chips, all of which have had supply issues.

Name a couple of key trends. Remote mixing and sustainability are two of the most talkedabout points. Understandably, remote mixing was vital during the pandemic. As Covid recedes, these methods could be utilised to cut the carbon footprint of the live events industry. Stew Hume is Editor of live events magazine TPi. He chairs ISE’s Live Events Summit, which runs from 15:00-19:00 on Thursday 12 May.

DIGITAL SIGNAGE FLORIAN ROTBERG What changed during the pandemic?

What about technology trends?

There’s now a greater consciousness around environmentally friendly, sustainable digital signage solutions. In the past, end-customers never really asked about power consumption, but this has changed dramatically.

In general we’ll be seeing more LED, larger LCDs (surprisingly), and software becoming more important than in the past. As hardware becomes more commoditised, the big differences are in the software platforms and the seamless experiences that are created with them.

Name one of the key trends.

Another important trend is remote management of hardware, and serviceability. It’s about creating the right hardware concepts so you have a robust system that doesn’t need any ad-hoc maintenance.

There’s a lot of consolidation going on as projects become more and more global. End-users are also looking for more global digital signage integrators. Some really big players are emerging, and what’s most interesting is that some of the first ones have been valued at over €100 million, so a lot of private equity companies have entered the market.

Florian Rotberg is Managing Director of invidis consulting. He chairs the Digital Signage Summit ISE, which runs from 10:3014:30 on Wednesday 11 May.

CONTROL ROOMS PETER PRATER What changed during the pandemic?

Which technologies are becoming more important?

The main change was the rapid desire to have people work from home. There’s still a desire to maintain that flexibility in working arrangements, though it’s tentative. There are challenges that need to be overcome: background interference and background listeners need to be avoided in an emergency call setting, for instance.

At the operator level, there’s a new wave of technologies that enable material to be presented in ever more innovative ways — meaning a need for fewer screens on the desk because we’re able to integrate better at the desktop. These include AV technologies like KVM over IP as well as microservicesoriented IT environments.

Name one of the key trends.

Peter Prater is Chairman of the International Critical Control Rooms Alliance. He is creating the content for the Control Rooms Summit alongside his colleague, ICCRA Vice Chairman Chris Dreyfus-Gibson, who will be moderating. The Summit runs from 10:30-14:30 on Tuesday 10 May

Something we’re seeing in the emergency services sector and elsewhere is a consolidation of facilities; for instance multiple counties’ fire and rescue services joining together around one control room. And in airports there’s consolidation in terms of smaller airports being run out of major ones — so a move to remote operations.

SMART BUILDING AND SMART WORKPLACE BOB SNYDER What changed during the pandemic? Thanks to the pandemic, the relationship most companies have with their physical spaces is going to change profoundly over the next few years – and that has huge implications for AV. People want to feel safe at work in an office and so the workplace environment is stepping up with innovations. Amazon invested $11.5 billion in 2020 in Covid response, making 150 significant process changes to keep teams safe, such as reimagining how to conduct meetings; reconfiguring break rooms; and re-evaluating how workers clock in and out for shifts. Tech is a critical part of introducing, tracking and managing when you change processes.

Name one of the key trends. In newer smart buildings, the ‘island effect’ that blocks the building owner and operator from obtaining and aggregating

important information from the various building systems has now been reduced to two silos, known as OT (operational technology) and IT (information technology). You might call the battle for one network to rule them all ‘the incumbents versus the challengers’.

Which technologies are becoming more important? Internet of Things systems generate the data which allows for complex, objective-oriented decisions that outstrip human capabilities. As artificial intelligence (AI) is integrated with building systems and IoT devices, it has the potential to improve occupant experience, increase operational efficiency, and optimise space and asset utilisation. Bob Snyder is Editor-in-Chief at Channel Media. He hosts ISE’s Smart Building Conference from 10:30-18:30 on Monday 9 May. He is also creating the content programme for ISE’s Smart Workplace Summit, which runs from 15:00-19:00 on Tuesday 10 May.

HIGHER EDUCATION GILL FERRELL What changed during the pandemic? Digital transformation happened! Schools and universities didn’t close: only their buildings did. Higher education, in particular, faced a unique set of pressures with the responsibility to assess students in the medical professions and judge their competence to be in the front line of fighting the pandemic within a few weeks of lockdowns beginning.

Name one of the key trends. We have already started to question what kinds of activity require face-to-face contact and what kinds of activity might be better scaffolded and supported using digital tools. With travel restrictions, quarantine and social distancing rules, we had to adapt to cohorts learning to the same timetable with only partial co-location. Hybrid learning – where physical and virtual combine in the same learning activity – has arrived.

Which technologies are becoming more important? To date AV services have either fallen into the category of AV that allows you to see and hear and interact in physical learning spaces, or AV that is focused towards creating and serving up content for asynchronous consumption online. With hybrid learning, we are looking to enable remote and onsite participants to see, hear and interact with one another and experience the same visibility and sound quality. In this category of hybrid experiences, I include augmented (AR), mixed (MR) and extended reality (XR) supported by a range of apps, devices and wearables. Gill Ferrell is Program Director at IMS Global Learning Consortium. She chairs ISE’s Digital Learning Summit, which runs from 15:00-19:00 on Wednesday 11 May.

SUPERYACHTS JACK ROBINSON What changed during the pandemic? There was huge growth of 45% in 2020 (superyacht growth is measured by order books based on new build orders and major refits). The standard growth of the industry of 25% year on year is already astounding, however it shows that the global pandemic has only highlighted the security of a superyacht.

Name one of the key trends. The industry has turned a corner and realised that not only is going green essential, it is better for all involved. There are some incredible associations and initiatives to support this, and technology companies are building sustainability into their research and development.

What about technology trends? The superyacht industry has a lot to learn from other industry global leaders and innovations, for example smart homes have led the way to smart superyachts. It is not a case of purely copying-and-pasting from other industries though, as superyachts require additional finessing in the development stage. For example, LG roll-up TV is exactly the type of technology that new owners will be looking for, however the research and development required for superyachting includes additional things like vibration testing and changing environments. Jack Robinson is the Publisher of Superyacht Technology News. He chairs ISE’s Superyacht Technology Summit, which runs from 10:30-14:30 on Thursday 12 May, followed by tours.

Insights: AVIXA

Association Overview

A new gauge of end user demand By Sean Wargo, Senior Director of Market Intelligence, AVIXA

Planned spending is on the rise in scale and scope with the allocation to AV staying fairly steady

Sean Wargo, Senior Director of Market Intelligence at AVIXA

As we reflect back on the past two years, one of the things that has crystallised for us here at AVIXA is a lack of available data on the current state of demand for AV products and services. Sure, most companies get an intuitive sense for this through their own pipeline of projects and enquiries. But when pipelines break down, like they have during the pandemic, a given company doesn’t really know whether they are in a pocket of softer demand or whether there are other areas of strength to be found. Asking around among other business leaders can help provide some of this context, but there again the issue is possible near-sightedness. This becomes the most important during the inflection points since these are the moments in time when early response can be crucial to long-term success. Put another way, knowing which parts of the markets are gaining or declining at a given point in time can help business leaders plan accordingly.

During the early part of the Covid-19 lockdown, AVIXA ran weekly surveys to gauge the nearly real-time extent of the impact on AV providers, with the hope of providing both some of the broad context and showcasing areas of opportunity. This was coupled with the monthly Pro AV Business Index as a long-range pulse of the health of the channel to show the resulting inflection points in provider outcomes. And lastly, the annual Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) report forecasted revenues over a five-year period based on the previous year’s results for use in benchmarking individual businesses. In each case, the issue is one of timing and sourcing. Data is captured from the provider community after the impact has been felt. It does not provide a sense for what the buyers of technology are thinking or planning in the days ahead. In simple research terms this means the studies have provided mostly a rear-view mirror perspective along with some general GPS co-ordinates for navigating the road ahead. They did not provide anything closer to turn-by-turn instructions or inputs. A different approach was needed to do so.

Market Opportunity Analysis Report Starting in the beginning of 2021, AVIXA turned its research lens to solving this gap through the launch of a quarterly survey of end user demand under the Market Opportunity Analysis Report (MOAR) branded series of market studies. The objective is to find out what buyers of AV products and services across a core of vertical markets were planning to do in the upcoming quarter in terms of capital expenditures and technology purchases. The idea was that these plans could then trickle down into RFPs or actual purchases from the pro AV channel. Increases or declines in plans would thus alert providers of a possible change in demand for their own offerings. Or the data could point to a shift in demand towards specific markets or certain solution types. Data on staffing and procurement would highlight whether end user companies are attempting to solve their needs through insourcing or alternative channels. And attitudinal measures help show preferences in the buyers’ approach to acquisition and usage. All of this then better arming the channel with a potential GPS upgrade of sorts.

Recovering markets demonstrate return of demand

Retail, corporate and hospitality all index higher in their intent to increase spending over the next quarter

So far, AVIXA has collected data for three straight quarters, representing a demand model for Q2 through Q4 of 2021. The resulting samples come from six different countries, Brazil, India, the UK, China, Germany and the US, capturing a more global gauge of demand than past efforts. The study also captured sufficient input to allow for eight different vertical markets to be profiled (corporate, hospitality, healthcare, retail, education, government/energy, transportation, and venues/entertainment).

Change to improvement budget How does your planned spending on capital improvement projects for CURRENT QUARTER compare to your actual spending for LAST YEAR QUARTER?

Spending stays steady So, what does the data say? As we would expect from the current recovery period, planned spending is on the rise in scale and scope with the allocation to AV staying fairly steady. Breaking this down, the percentage of firms saying they plan to do capital improvements has risen to 80% for the fourth quarter. Along with that, 58% also say the budget represents an increase from last year at the same time. The percentage of that budget going to AV is holding around a median of 30% as well. The profile of this spending points to an emphasis on AV production rooms for broadcast and streaming, in alignment with the rising need companies face of reaching their remote audiences. And, while the rising tide lifts all boats, audio equipment was the product listed as the one with the highest percentage of planned increases in spending.

In Q4, 58% of firms said their capital improvements budget had risen year-on-year

Which markets are growing the fastest? Retail, corporate and hospitality all index higher in their intent to increase spending over the next quarter. With consumers returning to stores and resuming travel across many parts of the world, this data aligns with expectations of a corresponding recovery in expected

spending. Corporate as well continues to evolve as it supports hybrid work models through an emphasis on collaboration technologies. Ultimately, this is just the beginning of what a demand study like this can reveal. Segmenting down to a country to see how the demand differs there, analysing the staffing level changes within markets, and tendencies towards direct purchasing of technology are also possible. Full access to the MOAR dashboard and report is available through a paid subscription at www.avixa.org/MOAR. In addition, AVIXA has just launched its Global Partner Program, which centres on access to the full range of our market intelligence reports, including unpublished research and exclusive interaction with our experts to curate and leverage these powerful resources at the global and regional level. For more information, visit www.avixa.org/GPP. We wish you the very best as we move through recovery and into true growth as an industry!

Next-Gen Talent

Filling the skills gap Anyone attending ISE 2022 is likely to have had difficulties recruiting staff, and the pandemic has only exacerbated this. Here we explore the burning issue of attracting and developing AV talent and how the industry, with the support of AVIXA, CEDIA and ISE, is working together to avert a skills crisis. Before the pandemic, while the AV jobs market was generally buoyant in terms of employment opportunities there were not always enough appropriately skilled candidates to fill them. Industry branding has long been an issue: professional AV, as opposed to IT, has not traditionally appeared in formal education courses, while outside the industry there has been a lack of understanding of the definition of ‘audiovisual’ as a career choice.

From March 2020, most areas of business and society closed down, with obvious impacts on the AV workforce. “In the first months of the pandemic there was a fear that if you continued working with live events in particular you had no future,” Tobias Lang, CEO, LANG AG, tells RISE. “Live events are dominated by freelancers for whom life was harder because there was no package of security and support so they left the industry. As the industry resumes normality, it will take time for the employment situation to unwind.”

AV is like an international language. Once you understand it, you can go all over the world Jack Laidlaw, Middlesbrough College

Live events is not the only sector with a shortage of freelancers. Technicians able to set up remote systems from broadcast to enterprise are in high demand. Videoconferencing solutions are ubiquitous. Many freelancers with these skills were brought into permanent employment at organisations desperate for inhouse networking expertise. “Every AV company and every end user is looking to hire permanent staff,” confirms Graeme Massey, MD at recruitment agency JacobsMassey. “As a consequence, there are fewer candidates in the market. Salaries have exponentially increased to attract the remaining pool of freelancers.” He adds: “Generally, you need someone who understands both AV system architecture and broadcast networks to deliver meetings and events online. That online element is here to stay and that has widened the skills gap.” The issues are Europe-wide. In the south of Europe many roles surrounding system integration and service positions are vacant, reports Christian Orcin Torner, MD, Iberia, d&b audiotechnik. “In Spain we’re missing sound engineers and technicians right now. It’s definitely a short-term problem and it will reverse itself in time, but right now finding individuals with these technical skills is challenging.” Brexit has exacerbated the problem in the UK. Many non-UK nationals working in AV returned home before January 2021. “Coming out the other side we’re in a perfect storm of high demand for permanently employed technicians and a talent pool drained of boots on the ground,” Massey says.

To improve levels of skills and capabilities, many companies are making greater use of online training and some are investing in their own resources inhouse. The Shure Audio Institute (SAI), for example, provides online and instructor-led courses for professionals wanting to improve their expertise in audio engineering and acoustics. “Understanding this new fast-changing environment, users’ requirements, and the technology needed to face these challenges is key when it comes to evolving in the AV business,” says Dave Klein, Director of SAI. Industry associations AVIXA and CEDIA both have significant programmes of training and qualifications to enable AV professionals to develop their industry skills and knowledge and progress through the industry — see the panel on page 30.

Lasting changes The upside of the skills gap is the opportunity it presents to make lasting changes to the industry’s recruitment process. “Pro AV has been around for four to five decades and largely grown outside of the standard training and higher education system,” Lang says. “The relationship between a technician, who is typically freelance, and the company that hired them was never that close. Now we see companies trying to form a closer relationship and willing to invest more in their employee’s career.” Torner believes training is “absolutely key” to preventing the pandemicaccelerated skills gap from recurring. “Every key player in the industry has a responsibility to provide training for its employees. The market is expanding in every area, some of which we may not have considered before, and so ensuring we are providing our employees with the opportunity to upskill and learn is very important. Education is something that should never end.”

The UK’s Middlesbrough College inaugurated a degree programme in audiovisual technology in 2017

the academic behind the programme. He attributes this partly to the university’s location in north-east England and to the greater attraction of industries like gaming.

“They need to be a problem solver,” Laidlaw says. “You don’t have to be a super creative artist but you need to have an open mind and to think laterally.”

It’s something a new AV Apprentice scheme aims to address. Devised by Laidlaw and Massey with input and support from 30 companies (including Shure, The British Academy, Wellcome Trust, Bloomberg and integrator Visavvi), the scheme is backed by the Open University, approved by the government’s Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education and will launch in January.

Shure’s Klein agrees: “Having a fresh enthusiasm for innovation in [audio] technology, and being able to understand customer’s demands and habits, while also having communication and people management skills, will ease the path to success.”

Crucially it can be accessed online by anyone. “With the AV Apprenticeship the beauty is you can study and you get paid. That’s the game-changer,” Massey says. “If you don’t have any financial backing you can enter the industry through the scheme, get a qualification and develop a career based on your own merit.” While prospective AV students need to be comfortable working with computers and have an affinity with engineering and technological knowledge, skills are valuable too.

Recognition that the industry is largely a white male domain is also essential to driving change. “The apprentice scheme is an entry level point into the industry,” he says. “The aim is to open the door to a wider and more diverse spectrum of people including to those who have never heard of the industry. Employers can close the skills gap by engaging apprentices.”

Raising awareness The hoped-for injection of keen talent notwithstanding, the industry needs to do more to raise awareness of the opportunities an AV career can bring.

The industry’s main universal qualifications are AVIXA’s CTS and CEDIA’s CIT and IST (see panel). These are well-respected accreditations but are generally only pursued by people after they have joined the industry, rather than while they are still in education. A degree programme in audiovisual technology inaugurated in 2017 at the UK’s Middlesbrough College was a step forward but struggled to attract students, says Jack Laidlaw, ISE’s AV Career Day brings young people to the show and gives them an insight into the industry

30

Insights: Talent

“This is the main challenge,” Lang insists. “The industry realised this before the pandemic but did not make it a priority. Now this is the challenge we have to solve together. The general public have an awareness of what it means to work in IT but the same is not true of AV. We have to change this. That’s a big challenge for AVIXA.” The diversity of career opportunity within AV needs to be contrasted with the more familiar career goals of music or media production. “When I speak about the positives I emphasise that a career in AV is very broad,” Laidlaw says. “You can be dealing with audio, projection, networking, computing — online or at venue. There’s systems integration and management. AV is like an international language. Once you understand it, you can go all over the world.” Massey agrees: “We should be looking to bring AV brand ambassadors into sixth forms and colleges and saying to students, ‘if you’re not looking for an academic route and want to get into an industry then AV offers you a chance to work at Bloomberg TV or on sound architecture or production script writing’. You can generalise while training then specialise afterwards.”

A training session for CEDIA’s Cable & Infrastructure Technician qualification, aimed at new entrants to the industry

For its part, ISE’s AV Career Day programme plays a role in fostering links between academia — students and faculty — and the AV industry. Supported by AVIXA and CEDIA, the initiative involves bringing young people to the show and giving them a window into the industry. This includes guided show floor visits to explore the range of technologies within AV, and presentations from potential role models to illustrate possible career paths. The overwhelming feedback from previous participants is that they had no idea of the breadth and scope of the industry.

Universities still have a long way to go to support the AV industry, Torner believes. “In terms of what the industry can do, we need to educate young people about the AV sector. It is such a dynamic, exciting career with limitless opportunities and I wish it was easier to communicate that. “Saying that, I’m delighted that ISE will be in Barcelona because I think it will really shine a spotlight on the industry in Spain. I hope by bringing AV stakeholders here and having intense coverage we will generate further interest in the sector and its importance to the city!”

AVIXA and CEDIA’s workforce development programmes ISE’s co-owners, industry associations AVIXA and CEDIA, are committed to workforce development and offer in-person and online training sessions at their various locations throughout the world. Both organisations offer a variety of tools to help attract, retain and develop the AV workforce, and have training and examinations available at events including ISE 2022.

AVIXA: Building strong foundations

CEDIA: Working for the industry

The AVIXA Foundation helps AV companies find and develop new talent and aims to increase awareness of AV as a viable career, supporting the growth of next generation AV professionals. It utilises AVIXA’s resources and industry volunteers to cultivate AV skills training programmes around the world. AVIXA also provides: > Training designed to create a solid foundation for a career in AV design, installation, or management. As well as general knowledge, courses are also available for designers, installers, live events professionals, technology managers, IT network professionals and project managers > Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) Programme > Renewal Units (RUs) > AVIXA’s APEX programme – one of the requirements to be a Provider of Excellence is to have a certain proportion of the workforce CTS-certified > For those new to the AV industry through to experienced veterans, AVIXA offers a comprehensive Dashboard which allows employees and employers to benchmark wages at a country level based on several attributes including position type, years of experience, CTS certifications, and level of education

CEDIA works to create a framework for the sustainable development of a skilled workforce by focusing on attracting new talent to the industry in a number of ways. Its workforce development activity involves utilising public and private resources to help individuals acquire the knowledge, skills and credentials they need to obtain gainful employment and advance their careers with businesses that need skilled workers. CEDIA is utilising the following strategies to become a viable link between jobseeker pipelines, including educational institutions, government agencies, community organisations and member employers. > Apprenticeships: developing the Smart Home Technician Apprenticeship in the UK > Kickstart Programme: a UK government initiative to get more young people into the workplace and skilled up for a career > CIT (Cabling & Infrastructure Technician): created for new entrants to the industry, providing foundational knowledge > IST (Integrated Systems Technician): a more advanced qualification for technicians > Two new revamped technician certifications to support the pathways

Explore digital transformation at IOT Solutions World Congress

The increasing overlap between the worlds of AV and IT has meant that Integrated Systems Europe has become ever more relevant to those seeking to enact digital transformation within many vertical markets. That trend is highlighted even more strongly this year as ISE teams up with IOT Solutions World Congress (IOTSWC), which is described as the largest international event devoted to industry transformation through disruptive technologies. IOTSWC will take place in Hall 4 of the Fira de Barcelona on 10-12 May; attendees who have registered for either exhibition may visit the other at no extra cost. Attendees registered to any of the ISE conferences can enjoy a 50% discount on the IOTSWC congress programme — and vice versa. There will also be pooling of talent between the content programmes of the two events: Smart Building Conference (SBC) Content Chair Bob Snyder will be speaking in the IOTSWC congress programme, and will also welcome some IOTSWC speakers to the SBC stage. Alongside ISE’s top pro AV companies and systems integration experts, IOTSWC will bring to the table leading experts and companies working on Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, Internet of Things and Quantum Computing. The goal of this cooperation is to highlight the common ground that offers new ideas and inspiration for attendees and exhibitors alike.

What is IOTSWC? IOT Solutions World Congress is organised jointly by Fira de Barcelona and the Industry IoT Consortium (IIC), an organisation founded in 2014

to accelerate the adoption of the Industrial Internet of Things”. The 2022 edition of IOTSWC — its sixth — is entitled title Game-Changing Solutions for Industry Transformation. The event identifies four key types of end-user within its visitor profile: > Strategists, tasked with moving their enterprise one step forward > Operational technologists, looking to optimise their companies’ internal processes > Customer-centric marketeers, with strong expertise in customer behaviour across multiple channels > IT specialists, who can determine how particular solutions can benefit their company The congress programme at IOTSWC is structured around five themes: Business Optimisation, Artificial Intelligence, Connectivity, Security and Customer Experience. Also taking place alongside IOTSWC is the Barcelona Cybersecurity Congress, an annual event co-organised with the Catalan Government.

Directors’ comments The directors of both shows are enthusiastic about what the cooperation agreement promises for attendees. The Director of IOTSWC, Roger Bou, says: “At IOTSWC we believe that some of the key technologies we have been showcasing such as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things have an incredible transformational potential for the professional AV industry and likewise the AV and systems integration industry can help to develop disruptive new solutions for the digital transformation ecosystem.” Mike Blackman, Managing Director of Integrated Systems Events, adds: “AV and IT convergence has been the single most important industry trend at ISE over the past decade and the inspiring innovations happening in IoT take this to another level. It is very exciting to be able to work together and explore even more areas of collaboration. The exciting world of pro AV and the inspiring innovations in IoT make all sorts of possibilities a reality.”

All week: Congress Square and show floor

New areas for demos, networking and start-ups ISE is enhancing the attendee experience by setting up live demo areas, networking lounges and start-up zones in and around the exhibition halls. We’re working with a wide range of partners, trade associations and end-users to organise this. ISE 2022 will feature numerous themed focal points at the show – where attendees can learn, engage, work or relax. These are located on the show floor and just outside hall entrances. Here is a summary of what’s planned:

Congress Square – by the entrances to Halls 4, 5, 6 and 7 > ISE’s Discovery Zone will showcase exciting new companies and first-time exhibitors > Pavilions organised by Barcelona City Council and the government of Catalonia will host local and regional exhibitors > The Catalonia Pavilion will also host the Open Innovation Challenge — a search for new technologies and solutions partners

Hall 2 > For the first time, ISE will host a dedicated Influencer Lounge, where social media influencers can interact with exhibitors and create and post content

Get to know WILM Women In Live Music (WILM) is hosting a lounge on Stand 7V650 at ISE 2022. We chatted to its CEO, Malle Kaas, about the organisation and its plans. What is Women In Live Music and what does it do? WILM is a European platform for women working within live events. Among the people who work various roles backstage, less than 5% are women or from other minorities. We have learned that a community like WILM motivates and inspires the few women in the industry, which helps keep them in the industry. It also helps the live event industry to find a more diverse crew. Furthermore, we organise events and workshops for our members to increase their skills and opportunities to succeed.

360° content from projection software company VIOSO will be shown in the Projection Dome in Hall 5

Hall 5 > The AV Experience Zone will hold Spanish-language sessions targeting key vertical markets (see page 39) > The Projection Dome (Stand 5X400) will show 360° content from projection software company VIOSO and also host presentations and events > Hall 5 is also the location of the Conference Stage, where ISE is holding seven conferences — see pages 46-47 for details

Hall 6 > See the latest in display solutions at the Digital Signage Boulevard

Now that the live events sector is recovering, will all your members return to it? It looks like it. Overall we’re seeing big gaps across Europe, where male colleagues have left the industry. However, many of our members are benefitting from this and grabbing the opportunities that occur because of these gaps. However, we are still far from being more than 10% women backstage; I reckon that will take another five to 10 years. WILM will have a lounge in Hall 7 at ISE 2022. What are you looking to do there? We hope to encourage more women to come to the tradeshow by offering them a ‘safe space’ where they can hang out and connect with other women. It can be pretty intimidating to enter a trade show on your own when you are a woman, especially if you are a newcomer to the industry. But I do hope that both exhibitors and male guests will visit the lounge and learn more

> Sponsored by Econocom, the ISE Retail Showcase will feature dozens of retail applications to test and try in a real store environment > The Retail Stage will spotlight case studies and thought leadership on retail technology

Hall 7 > The Live Events Arena will be a combined stage and networking area, while the adjacent Product Highlights Area will be a technology showcase > Women In Live Music will also host a lounge (see box item) Please keep an eye on the ISE website (www.iseurope.org) over the coming weeks for more details.

about the industry from a woman’s perspective. Tell us about the discussion panel that you’re hosting there. At 16:00 on Tuesday 10 May, we are hosting a panel with the topic ‘Where are the women in the R&D and sales departments?’ We asked a bunch of manufacturers this question years ago, and we got the same answer everywhere: ‘We would love to hire more women in our more technical departments. However, we don’t get any applications from women.’ We would like to discuss how we can turn this around.

Stand Design Awards return to ISE 2022 Once again, ISE is proud to host the ISE Stand Design Awards competition, which is now in its fifth year. Created to acknowledge ISE exhibitors and their stand-design efforts, the awards are independently managed by EXHIBITOR magazine, an award-winning print and online magazine featuring best practices for trade show marketing. Every stand on the ISE show floor is automatically entered and will be judged on site during ISE 2022. (Any stand that has previously won an ISE Stand Design Award and whose design employs roughly the same size footprint and/or reuses approximately 50% or more of the previous winning stand is ineligible for the competition.) There are four categories: 49sqm or less, 50-199sqm, 200-399sqm, and 400sqm or more. EXHIBITOR magazine editor, Travis Stanton, and a staff member will be on site for the duration of the show and will complete the initial round of judging to select the finalists. “After two years in hibernation, the live events industry is re-emerging, as events like ISE return amid a pent-up demand for face-to-face connection,” said Stanton. “The world is waiting to see what ISE exhibitors have in store, and there’s never been a more important time to engage the power of experiential marketing as a way to reignite business, spotlight innovation and convey to clients and prospects that your brand has not just weathered the pandemic but also pivoted into a more agile operation capable of thriving amid unprecedented obstacles.”

Flanked by Mike Blackman of ISE and Travis Stanton of EXHIBITOR magazine, representing the winners of the 2020 Stand Design Awards were (L-R) Henoc Bananga (Lindy), Brigitte Kommer and Daniela Steinhart (NEC Display Solutions Europe), Keith Mok (Rocketsign) and Wendy Chen (BenQ Europe).

The finalists will be judged by an expert panel of designers and marketers, who will award scores based on a specially defined set of criteria. Scores will be based on eight different assessment criteria points, including: strength of communications, integration of technology, impact and effective use of space. The Stand Design Awards will take place on Thursday 12 May at 16:00 in the Live Events Arena, Hall 7, Stand 7X200.

Making hybrid work Jabra and Shure, two ISE 2022 Platinum Sponsors, share their thoughts on hybrid working – the challenges it brings and the AV technology on show in Barcelona that is helping teams to collaborate with comfort and ease.

Jabra

The future of work The shift to hybrid working is the biggest change in work culture that many businesses have ever experienced. There is a growing demand for flexibility with 68% of employees preferring a hybrid working model, according to Jabra’s Hybrid Ways of Working 2021 Global Report. The challenge is how to create a hybrid working environment where everyone thrives and can be their most productive, wherever they are. As we continue to work in dispersed teams more than ever before, companies are reviewing how to future-proof their business, placing video at the heart of digital transformation. Looking ahead, AI and analytics will play an integral role in helping companies to make informed decisions and navigate a hybrid-working future. At ISE, Jabra is showcasing how intelligent video solutions, data-driven insights, and immersive video and sound are transforming productivity and increasing collaboration. Jabra will also be highlighting new 2022 research that reveals the latest hybrid working challenges and trends.

With Jabra’s PanaCast 50 it is now possible to enjoy videoconferencing with a 180o field-of-view, while a whiteboard sharing feature captures content so everyone can participate. There is also the flexibility to experience professional videoconferencing from anywhere with Jabra’s PanaCast 20, a compact, portable and intelligent personal camera. www.jabra.co.uk Stand: 2E300

Shure

High-quality audio means high-quality meetings Companies of all sizes have had to quickly adapt and make do with available technology to support the rapid shift to remote working. Since the hybrid working model is here to stay, businesses are realising that there is a need to upgrade their conferencing technology to foster collaboration among employees in all their meeting spaces. Now, if the past few years have taught the world one thing, it’s that communication is key and having the right audio is critical to unlocking the productivity and potential for employees, end users and customers. We all know that you can still have a successful conference call without video, but without high-quality audio your call is over before it can really even begin, which is why it is crucial to have a reliable audio solution for all of your meeting spaces. With a choice of either Shure’s Microflex or Stem ecosystems, IT teams and AV integrators are getting the best of both worlds with a high-quality suite of audio devices that can be customised and scaled to meet the needs of any room and budget. This makes them the perfect choice for any type

or size of organisation seeking high-quality standardised audio solutions. www.shure.com Stand: 3N250

Registration

Halls and Technology Zones

There is no in-person registration; it can only be done online, at www.iseurope.org.

The show will feature themed Technology Zones, drawing together exhibitors with a strong focus in a specific area: > Audio (Hall 7) > Digital Signage & DOOH (Hall 6) > Multi-Technology (Halls 3 & 5) > Lighting & Staging (Hall 7) – new for ISE 2022 > Residential Solutions / Smart Building (Hall 2) > Unified Communications / Education Technology (Hall 2)

A major change for ISE 2022 is that we will not routinely issue paper tickets or badges. Once you have registered, you will be able to download your badge via the ISE mobile app. This badge admits you to the venue and to any additional conferences or professional development sessions for which you have registered. If you wish to have a paper badge, you can have one printed at an information point at the entrances. But if you already have a company lapel badge, we recommend you wear that instead. The ISE mobile app is available to download now from app stores. Show badges will be accessible from the app on or before 18 April.

COVID-19 precautions Following our successful events in both Barcelona and London in 2021, we will again be deploying Covid protection measures to ensure each other’s safety. Anyone that wants to enter Fira Gran Vía during the four days of ISE 2022 (10-13 May) must bring one of the following with them, in either English or Spanish, and show it on entry: > Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 > Proof of recovery from COVID-19 > Proof of a negative PCR or Rapid Antigen Test — this is valid for two days (the day of the test and the day after). Once this has expired, a new proof of a negative PCR or Rapid Antigen Test must be obtained. Please note that a negative Covid test is only required to enter ISE 2022 if you do not have proof of vaccination or proof of recovery. Once you have shown your Covid certificate, you can scan your badge (from the app) to enter the show. It is possible that these arrangements may change after this magazine is published, so to get the latest information about Covid protocols in place at the show and testing facilities in Barcelona, please see www.iseurope.org/keeping-you-safe-at-ise-2022/.

Arrival, wayfinding and show information You can enter the Fira by showing your validated electronic badge at either the South Access or the East Access. You need to show your validated electronic badge to enter the show. Secure cloakrooms are available to store coats (€2 per day) and luggage (€4 per day). On your way in: > Pick up an Official Show Guide for detailed information on exhibitors, show features and professional development programmes. > For the very latest updates on what’s happening at ISE 2022, pick up a copy of the ISE Daily. The show’s official newspaper is produced on-site during the show and printed overnight in time for distribution each morning. > The ISE app will also contain information about exhibitors, show features, conferences, seminars and professional development sessions.

The Multi-Technology Zone (Halls 3 and 5) contains many of ISE’s flagship exhibitors, as well as companies with a broad range of solutions that span more than one main technology area. Additionally, Congress Square (between Halls 4, 5, 6 and 7) will feature the Discovery Zone – a special area highlighting startups, new businesses and companies making their debut at ISE. At the Show: Conferences

What’s shaping the future? The ISE 2022 conference programme consists of seven events across the whole week of ISE, from Monday to Friday. ISE continues to attract an increasing number of AV end-users — professionals who work in industries where AV solutions are deployed — in addition to its traditional audience of people employed in the AV buying chain, also called the AV channel. ISE’s conference programme facilitates the exchange of ideas between these two groups. Each conference is based around a specific vertical, but they are all designed to inform attendees about the technology trends,

changing business environment and customer expectations that are shaping the future of their particular industry. All these conferences will take place in the ISE Conference area in Hall 5 (see floorplan on pages 10-11 for location). For more on the background to these conferences, turn to page 20. To register for any of the conferences, you must first register for ISE. Turn to page 54 for a free exhibition registration code.

Smart Building Conference Monday 9 May, 10:30-18:30

Smart, safe, sustainable building technologies The pandemic underlines the importance of health and safety within buildings. Nature (and governments) constantly remind us of the price of ignoring sustainability. Meanwhile owners, tenants and stakeholders realise that only smart technologies allow us the level of information and control we need to address these – and other – major concerns. As office and retail buildings reopen, delivering peace-of-mind and confidence to employees and visitors is a top priority. Property owners and corporate tenants have been forced to

rethink the way buildings are operated; notably, investment in smart building technology rose during this pandemic. The built environment is changing dramatically. You need to learn more about what these important changes in the building will require of you. Talking about smart building is where you learn the most about all the technologies and how they come together.

Superyacht Technology Summit & VIP Experience Monday 9 May, 10:30-14:30; tours the next day

Full speed ahead for the superyacht industry Presented by Superyacht Technology, the Superyacht Technology Summit & VIP Experience will involve a halfday summit covering tech talks to engage with the best in the superyacht industry. This will be followed by a half-day VIP tour of ISE and a shipyard, followed by a lavish dinner at one of Barcelona’s top eateries.

> Success: Tech Talks will cover how to succeed in the industry and highlight how blue-chip companies can work successfully with superyacht R&D teams.

Key Summit themes include:

> Learning: What can we learn from the companies that are at ISE?

> Integration: Industry leaders will discuss how the process works, what we should expect from great integrators.

> Future: What is the future of technical management in the superyacht industry, with technology as a whole moving towards AI, automation and smart interactions?

Control Rooms Summit Tuesday 10 May,, 10:30-14:30

Designing a new critical control room The emphasis placed on professionalising critical control rooms has moved at a rapid pace over the past 20-30 years, driven by the rationalisation and centralisation of facilities and operations, often as a result of advances in technology. Today control rooms are very much the entry, evaluation and decision-making point in the management of many and varied critical operations.

These centres of excellence must continue to evolve as the world changes around them. In recent years we have heard a lot about closer collaboration and integration of city- or region-wide service providers to deliver Smart or Safe Cities. So, how do you go about designing a new critical control room? The Summit will explore the way these facilities are changing and how the control room community must work together to deliver appropriate and outstanding new models.

Smart Workplace Summit Tuesday 10 May, 15:00-19:00

Innovations re-shaping the workplace With eyes on returning to the office, organisations need immediately practical and implementable advice from workplace integrators. No other conference brings together the three worlds that collide to make the smart workplace: the digital workplace of the IT industry which improves the employee experience, the encompassing workplace of facility managers which controls much of the office environment, and the workplace

experiences that the AV industry has brought to meeting rooms, lobbies and open spaces. Each sector is making progress that goes unnoticed by the other. Companies and organisations need solutions now: they need solutions that make their offices safe for workers and visitors, their remote workers more productive, and their employee experiences more attractive in the middle of the Great Resignation.

Digital Signage Summit Wednesday 11 May, 10:30-14:30

The new agenda The Digital Signage Summit will address key topics on the digital signage agenda: green signage; industry consolidation; best practice; and the latest tech trends. Sustainability and green signage have become relevant at C-level. CEOs and CIOs now have to deliver new carbon savings every quarter to their shareholders. Green signage also can play a huge role in ESG (environmental, social and governance) strategy.

integrators, tech suppliers, brands and retailers. There will be roundtable discussions around these key topics and exclusive market insights, including the traditional invidis keynote. And they can expect broad market coverage around the areas of digital signage, DooH, digital retail, new work and smart city.

Attendees can see and hear top speakers from leading

Digital Learning Summit Wednesday 11 May, 15:00-19:00

Build back hybrid The pandemic massively accelerated digital transformation within higher education. With travel restrictions, quarantine and social distancing rules, it was necessary to adapt to cohorts learning to the same timetable with only partial co-location. Everyone is keen to get back on campus and back in the classroom but the genie is out of the bottle: hybrid learning has arrived.

and insights into its product roadmap as it positions itself at the heart of the learning ecosystem. There will also be great success stories of universities developing creative solutions to deliver hybrid learning at scale. Plus there will be a look at how AR, MR and XR are helping deliver everything from justin-time learning to more authentic assessment.

The Digital Learning Summit will explore the implications of this seismic shift. Zoom will give an inside view of its success

Live Events Summit Thursday 12 May, 15:00-19:00

The new world of pro audio Experts from the world of pro audio, top manufacturers and professionals at the coalface of the live events industry will be sharing their expertise at the Live Events Summit. Produced in association with live events industry magazine TPi, the Summit will focus primarily on the world of pro audio, touching upon the industry trends that will impact on what artists and audiences are likely to see in the future. Subjects to be covered include: > Immersive Audio on Tour > Remote Mixing

> Networking > Touring Sustainably

Remote mixing was vital during the pandemic, but could be utilised more widely to cut the industry’s carbon footprint. With bands such as Coldplay being outspoken about reducing environmental impact, it will be up to those behind the scenes to find the solutions.

And don't forget…as an ISE attendee you qualify

for a 50% reduction on a conference ticket at IOT Solutions World Congress in Hall 4. See page 32 for details
