Message from the Chairman Oxberry, who will be in post by the time you read this Review. I also want to express my own very sincere and grateful thanks to everyone involved in the running of Kirkwood. To all members of staff, to the many volunteers who so freely give of their time, whether in the Hospice, indoors and outdoors, or working in our Support Groups, or in our everincreasing number of shops. Also, everyone involved in our many fundraising activities. This success, over the year, is against a background of major financial restraint in the country.

This is my first report as Chairman of Trustees and I want to say what an honour it is to serve in this capacity, looking back on a memorable year and also looking forward to the challenges ahead. The membership of the Board of Trustees is relatively new, as many experienced ones departed at the AGM last year. However, the new ideas and skills the latest recruits have brought are being used throughout the Hospice. At this point, I would like to record my and all Trustees sincere thanks to our Medical Director, Dr Charlotte Clare, who left us for a post in London in March. Her work with the Hospice brought a new dimension to the care of all patients in Kirklees with life threatening illnesses. We welcome her replacement, Dr Stephen

Looking at the year ahead, there are many problems and difficulties facing the country and the Hospice will not be immune to these, whether at home, in business or employment. The Trustees and Senior Management have recently embarked on a strategic review, attempting to look 10 years ahead. The aim and outcome is to plan and update facilities to meet the ever more complex needs of patients, particularly in the bed area. On a personal note, I would like to thank everyone for their support during the past year.

Director of Clinical Services Christine Springthorpe
The last twelve months have been both exciting and demanding, the complex needs of those referred for hospice care and support having required the specialist knowledge and skills of the whole clinical team. A great deal of collaborative work has taken place in the past year and I am constantly impressed and proud of the ways in which the team works together to ensure the best possible quality of care is given to patients, their families and friends. The commitment and involvement of support service teams is also vital in this team approach to care. The impact of any changes to practice must be monitored to assess the impact on patient experience and to this end we reviewed the ways in which we gain feedback from those using all Hospice services, either here at Kirkwood or in their own homes. A new User Forum was launched in March 2010 and will continue to develop throughout the year, involving those who use, or have recently used, any Hospice service. We want to hear about their experience of the Hospice first-hand and involve them in developing new services, changes to patient facilities and the provision of information for potential users of services. To date, the group has provided several useful ideas that have been taken forward by members of staff.
4
Other initiatives that have been revised or introduced in order to increase feedback are: • The adaptation of patient and carer assessment documentation, to clearly show active engagement in care planning • Patient and family satisfaction questionnaires and surveys in all clinical service areas • Updated notice boards for patients and carers • More suggestion boxes in all patient areas • ‘Real time’ feedback interviews with in-patients and their families.
There is no doubt that the next few years will be challenging. The new Government’s review of the NHS and funding mechanism for hospices means that we start the new financial year with some uncertainty about the national context in which we will be operating and how Government funding may be allocated. Our challenge, as always, is to continue to do what we do well whilst engaging at a local, regional and national level to ensure Kirkwood’s future security.
Medical Director Dr Stephen Oxberry
Kirkwood is a great place to work and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Clinical team here. My intention is to continue building on the excellent work done by my predecessor, Dr Charlotte Clare. In addition to the existing role, I have a number of new ideas for the future to develop services at Kirkwood. Currently, we see many people suffering from the effects of cancer. However, there are many who do not have cancer, but still suffer from symptoms that can be helped by Kirkwood and the Palliative Care Team. Patients with diseases such as heart failure, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, renal failure and motor neurone disease (to name just a few) can experience symptoms that adversely affect the quality of their daily lives. In partnership, I hope to allow more of these symptomatic patients to gain access to our services at Kirkwood, in addition to continuing the service we provide for those with cancer. My aim is to encourage our existing clinical staff to continually develop their training and teaching, alongside an appreciation for research and development. Ensuring that patients and carers receive a first-class service, adapted to their specific needs, remains our priority.

In-patient Unit Gillian Hinchcliffe Senior Sister Another year and more challenges for us to face in order to continue to provide an excellent standard of care for our patients and their families and carers. The retirement of two senior members of the night team last year made it necessary to consider the feasibility of continuing with a permanent night team of nurses. Consultation with qualified nurses from the day and night teams resulted in them rotating through days and nights. This represents a major change in working practices but is working well, providing a greater understanding of the complete twenty-four hour care process. Last year, we introduced an adaptation of the NHS initiative ‘Releasing Time to Care’ into the nursing team. The aim is to release nursing time to direct patient care by working collaboratively on reviewing their clinical environments, systems and processes. Currently being implemented by Sister Sarah Faulkner, who has undertaken a temporary change of role to Practice Development Facilitator, it involves her working closely with the nursing team to facilitate development of their clinical knowledge and skills, exploring new ways of working and empowering the team to change practice. Infection prevention and control For further information, visit kirkwoodhospice.co.uk
continues to be a high priority. The Health and Social Care Act 2008 requires providers of independent healthcare to register with the Care Quality Commission, providing assurance of safety and quality of care relating to cleanliness and infection control. Thorough internal and external audits ensure that the Hospice complies with all elements of the Act, reducing the risk of patients acquiring an infection whilst in our care.
In the year ended 31st March 2010, the total of In-patient days were 3,995.

With the recent addition of a further staff nurse, the department continues to operate with regular permanent staff and volunteers. Our complementary therapy team has also recruited seven new volunteers; five will be working as complementary therapists and two as beauty therapists. The planned purchase of the flat screen television and Nintendo Wii has been completed and has proved popular with patients. Filter coffee will be available in the very near future! Therapeutic day care is held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with volunteer drivers providing the necessary transport. Staff continue to liaise with hospital consultants, GPs and community professionals involved in patient care in the community. A higher percentage of Support and Therapy Centre patients are now being admitted to our In-patient unit. Every Friday and alternate Mondays are Drop-In days for those affected by life-threatening illnesses. The Support and Therapy Team are now promoting the Monday Drop-In days at district nurse forums and lecture days when appropriate. Monday Drop-In dates are listed on the Hospice website at www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk
access for clients than travelling outside Kirklees to lymphoedema appointments. The clinic is now run by two link nurses who liaise regularly with the lymphoedema specialist nurses in Calderdale. The clinic offers structured appointments for support, advice and information as well as monitoring and supplying appliances to manage lymphoedema. With the support of a grant from the Department of Health, the Support and Therapy Centre has recently undergone a refurbishment of the art area to provide better access for patients in wheelchairs, which formerly presented an ongoing problem within the existing area.
Future plans include the ongoing promotion of the service to a wider group of potential service users. Possible areas include non-cancer related diagnoses, for example neurological, cardiac and respiratory illnesses. This will be achieved through liaison with community professionals such as community matrons, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.
In the year ended 31st March 2010, the Unit had 113 new patients referred for Day Care.
The Lymphoedema Clinic continues to be well attended, providing easier For further information, visit kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

people to die at home, specialist needs including symptom control have to be met. Advice is needed regarding extra support, equipment, services and financial help. Communication is often complex and crucial at these sensitive times and the team is at the cutting edge of what may be the worst of times for patients and their families. All improvements and change are underpinned by high quality education, essential to the team who plan, deliver and evaluate education
in all clinical settings, from GPs to hospital staff, and deliver high quality study days (which also raise money) to the wider national audience. The Hospice community team has decades of specialist experience. It is a stable, motivated, happy team which, together with all Hospice staff and volunteers, is taking our service forward with pride.
The CNS role is a complex and dynamic one. As our population live longer and more people choose to die at home, the workload of the community team increases and changes and Government strategy drives this change. Kirkwood is a forward-thinking organisation with high standards and the team will be leading specialist palliative care out in the Kirklees community, supporting GPs and district nurses and working closely and effectively with the Hospice team. Dealing with the shattering reality of a life-threatening illness is not easy. The Family Care Team at Kirkwood recognise this. The Team offer specialist support, tailored for each individual, using individual psychotherapy and counselling, informal group support, peer support and family work with patients, their families, carers and friends. We also continue to serve the wider community of Kirklees and we continue to work in conjunction with a range of allied health professionals to ensure that whoever requires our services can freely access them. In our work, we are supported by an extremely dedicated team of bereavement support volunteers and volunteer counsellors. Our thanks go to them for their generosity and flexibility, which adds greatly to our core work. Support via telephone, the bereavement Drop-In and the bereavement evening continues. Our bereavement Drop-In has grown considerably and we are currently reviewing this and making plans to review the bereavement evening. A list of our services and times are on the Family Care section of the Hospice website together with our referral and eligibility criteria.
We continue to provide one-to-one counselling and psychotherapy and demand for both formal and informal sessions is increasing. The team has been working with more young adults recently and, although this work is challenging, the courage of our young people inspires us to respond in a more creative and dynamic manner. Shortly our bereavement evening talks and a series of information leaflets will be available on the website. We also have a new series of bereavement workshops being delivered both internally and externally. Finally, we have completed a full service evaluation since the last review, the results of which are extremely positive. We would like to

Quality & Eductaion Manager
The provision of education at Kirkwood remains essential in order to ensure high quality services are maintained. Regular education and training sessions are held for our own staff and professionals working in the NHS and private settings. “Love and Laughter in Palliative Care” and “I Told You I Was Ill” , were two study days facilitated by nurses in our community Palliative Care Team. Available for all staff within the locality, they focused on important areas within end-of-life care. The majority of teaching is delivered by senior clinical staff, enabling them to develop their own teaching skills, share their specialist knowledge and promote high quality patient care. Non-clinical personnel undertake a wide variety of activities and receive education and training appropriate to their role. Shop managers and deputies have been encouraged to participate in communication and manual handling training as well as identifying any new training that would help them in their work. Also, external trainers have facilitated study days for reception, retail, administration and maintenance staff in subjects including communication and cultural awareness.
Our annual education programme is available on our website www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk
Within the past 8 months, over 100 volunteers have attended essential training sessions and courses. A new programme started in 2009 to ensure volunteers are kept up-to-date with policies and procedures within the Hospice. This will continue into 2010 and beyond. Multi-Professional Palliative Care modules are also being delivered in our Education Centre, through continued links with the University of Huddersfield, whilst nursing students and other health care professionals can attend a Kirkwood Awareness

Director of Finance & Administration Hilary Turner
The last year has seen some very difficult financial times for lots of people and we accept that some of our supporters have not been able to be as generous as they have in the past. However, we are pleased to say that although some areas of our income have seen a fall in the year, others have maintained and even exceeded previous years. As always, we are so grateful to all those who remember Kirkwood in their wills. As in the previous year, legacies in the year ended 31 March 2010 totalled just over £600,000 and made a real difference. We have held new fundraising events and opened new shops, but realise these are only successful with the support of the public who remain loyal to us year on year. We are currently planning to upgrade our IT systems to link in with our colleagues in local hospitals and the community, giving our clinical team access to up-to-date patient information. This is an important step for us, requiring the highest levels of security to protect confidential information. My thanks, as always, go to the support services staff who keep the Hospice clean and well-maintained and make sure patients have nutritious meals. Thanks also to the finance
and administration team, who work diligently and efficiently in our ‘back offices’. We look ahead with some apprehension at the effect the new government might have on funds for end-of-life care. At present we receive around 20% of our income from our local Primary Care Trust (PCT) but, as it is planned that PCTs will cease to exist in April 2013, we wait to hear how the new funding mechanisms will affect us.

Fundraising & Marketing Manager Garry Wilkinson
In March 2010, the Hospice celebrated its 23rd Anniversary of providing care for the people of Kirklees. Over £4.2million is required every year to ensure the Hospice is able to continue to care. With less than 20% of this amount coming from statutory funding, this leaves over £3.5million required from voluntary sources each year. We are very conscious of the wonderful support we receive from our supporters and, particularly in these difficult financial times, we are immensely grateful to each and every person who chooses to donate to Kirkwood.
Lottery membership continued to grow during the year and has now exceeded 4,200 players. This is vital regular income for the Hospice and I would like to thank every player for their continued support. During the year, a door-to-door canvasser joined the team and he has been working hard to increase membership, not only calling at homes but promoting the Lottery outside supermarkets throughout Kirklees. The Hospice opened its 15th shop in Marsden in January 2010 and launched Gift Aid in its shops in February 2010. The shops continue to perform very well, raising vital funds for Kirkwood, managed by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
In the year ended 31st March 2010, over 49,300 Hospice newsletters were mailed out. The Midnight Memory Walk continues to grow. This year registrations approached 1,000 and over £100,000 was pledged to support patient care at the Hospice. Music, stilt walkers and a breathtaking fire show preceded the launch of the walk – on the stroke of Midnight. So, all in all, another bumper and very busy year! Once again, our grateful thanks to every supporter, without whom the Hospice would be unable to continue its care.

Fundraising Events & Campaign 2009 Santa Run
Kirkwood runs a range of events and campaigns throughout the year in order to raise the money required to maintain services for patients at the Hospice and in their own homes. It costs over £10,900 every day to provide care for the people of Kirklees and over 80% of this amount (over £3.5million every year) is raised through voluntary donations from supporters. Without their help, the Hospice would be unable to continue to care. Some of Kirkwood’s events are included here. However, for a full list of current events, regularly updated, please visit the Hospice website at www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk Kirkwood has now held four annual Midnight Memory Walks around Kirklees. This year, almost 1,000 walkers walked the 6 or 10 mile route, starting and finishing at the Galpharm Stadium. Every participant walked in memory of a loved one, once again creating an incredible atmosphere on the night. Over £100,000 was pledged in sponsorship for Kirkwood and everyone at the Hospice is immensely grateful for the support received. In 2011, the Hospice hopes to celebrate the fifth year of the walk by breaking the elusive 1,000 walkers barrier for the first time. Everyone is welcome, men, women, children and dogs! We hope to see you all there.

In December, Kirkwood held its annual “Light Up A Life” services in Huddersfield and Dewsbury. Light Up A Life is a very special appeal where people are invited to dedicate a light on the Hospice’s Evergreen Tree of Lights in memory of a loved one. Everyone who dedicates a light receives a card to say that a light will be shining on the tree for their special person, whose name is entered in Kirkwood’s Book of Lights which remains on constant display at the Hospice throughout the year. Every participant also receives an invitation to attend one of the Hospice’s services of celebration.
Fundraising Events & Campaign “It’s A Knockout” 2009
In July, we held our annual Golf Day at Bradley Park Golf Club. Over 40 teams took part in the competition, raising over £7,500 for the Hospice, whilst enjoying the surroundings of this award-winning golf course. July also brought our latest “It’s A Knockout” event. The sun shone once again as the teams raced against each other over foam-filled inflatables, to win the coveted prize of...a small plastic trophy! Whether teams won or lost on the day, they left with the knowledge that every penny raised would help Hospice patients, raising over £11,000. The Hospice newsletter was redesigned during 2009 and over 49,000 copies were mailed to supporters during the spring and autumn, keeping them up to date with Hospice news and new developments. The newsletter is also an opportunity to thank donors for their support and inform them about upcoming events and campaigns. A huge thank you goes out to all of Kirkwood’s supporters who ran, walked, cycled, collected, baked, raced, golfed, bought and sold, danced, raffled, parachuted or in any other way gave their time and money to support the Hospice. Without you all Kirkwood wouldn’t be here! Thanks.

Kirkwood Hospice Shops Bags For Life Ideal for a spot of retail therapy! During the last year, the Hospice opened a new unit in Marsden. This is our 15th shop and the third in the Colne Valley and opened on 20th January. Open 7 days a week, it provides the same high quality range of clothing, bric-a-brac, books, cds/dvds and other items as other Kirkwood Hospice shops.
the Association of Charity Shops, presented at their recent national conference. The Hospice is proud to receive this award, because it celebrates the commitment of the retail team, not only to increase turnover in their shops, but also to maximise profit too, ensuring they raise as much as possible for patient care at Kirkwood.
Kirkwood also launched a small retail outlet in the post office in Shepley, under the guidance of the Kirkburton shop manager. This unit has enabled the Hospice to provide retail space in an area which would be unable to justify a “stand-alone” unit. It sells a range of books, shoes & handbags, bric-a-brac, games and a limited range of new goods. In February 2010, Kirkwood launched Gift Aid in its shops. This scheme was pioneered by Sue Ryder Cancer Care, having raised over £2million since it was launched. Whilst Kirkwood’s income is still some way short of this figure, the scheme does mean that any donations of stock made by a UK taxpayer can now earn the Hospice an extra 28% at no cost to the donor. The scheme is proving hugely successful with over 3,900 people signed up to date, earning an additional £40,000 for the shops network since its launch. For the third year in succession, the shops performance was recognised with a profitability award from For further information, visit kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

Your age should be a bonus, not a burden! Do you suspect that you are not getting positions you apply for or are overlooked for a promotion that you are ably qualified for? Perhaps you have been dismissed to make way for a younger employee? Was your retirement sprung upon you with no or little warning? If so, you could have been the victim of Unlawful age discrimination. We are specialists in Employment Law and are fully regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. We help our clients resolve their employment law problems and protect their rights, including age and other unlawful discrimination. There are strict time limits to observe, usually only three months, so don’t delay or it could be too late!

Volunteers Judith Robinson Volunteer Co-ordinator Last year, volunteers donated 35,500 hours of their time, carrying out a wide variety of tasks and complementing the work of the staff. 67 new volunteers came on board in the Hospice. In addition, 404 shop volunteers gave over 52,000 hours of their time. The Hospice itself has 250 regular volunteers, assisting with many tasks which include taking the tea trolley round to patients, visitors and staff; helping with reception duties; bringing patients to and from the Support and Therapy centre and helping within the centre; administration help; collecting goods for our shops and maintaining our beautiful grounds, which provide a haven for patients and their visitors. The formal induction which takes place every two months, has proven successful, giving new volunteers information about the Hospice before they take up their duties. Links with local colleges are ongoing, enabling older children to gain community experience and promoting knowledge of Kirkwood to younger people. We continue to audit our volunteer services and give the volunteers the option of an annual appraisal, so that we can identify any training

needs extending beyond our annual mandatory training programme. Many thanks to those who give their time and friendship.
In the year ended 31st March 2010, volunteers donated over 87,500 hours of their time to the Hospice.
The Hospice has seventeen Support Groups, all regularly involved in organising a variety of events throughout the year. In 2009 alone, they raised almost ÂŁ100,000 for patient care. We are immensely grateful to all members of our Support Groups, whose pioneering work twenty years ago helped to build the Hospice. Their continual hard work and dedication helps to ensure Kirkwood is there when the people of Kirklees need it most. For details about your nearest Support Group, call Marie Peacock on 01484 557911
