Print show news is spread across our regular features and highlighted in two specific chapters this month. First up is Sign & Digital at the NEC from 30th April, a must visit event for everyone in quick professional print. We are looking forward to discovering more business opportunities and a new balti as we do each year. Between Birmingham and Harrogate will be a fortnight to digest the new products, live demos, free seminars, workshops, some quality networking and the odd beer. Then we are at it again from the 14th May at North Print & Pack. We are looking forward to more profit in print application opportunities, some new ‘Speed dating’ and the PrintIT! Awards. Topping up our print inspiration with experts to aid our research the QPP reporting team will then be hot footing it back down south to strangle your next issue together. Before then check out some special offers throughout the magazine especially pages 7 and 29. Martin is reporting on a fantastic new laminator from Vivid, which we have on test and now cannot let go. Our new LFP presentation is on page 22. We meet lots of you lovely readers at the shows and the feedback is that most of you will have started this issue on page 30 where all the jokes you send in are published, well just the cleanest ones that Maureen doesn’t edit out. Soon be summer! Peter, hotting up in print, Foulkes.

HP Present Digital Book Production at London Book Fair HP will be presenting digital printing solutions for publishers as well as demonstrating the new HP SmartBooks Toolkit for calculating the most cost effective production methods for books, at the London Book Fair, 15-17 April 2013, Earls Court, London. On the HP stand there will be a variety of samples showing the range and quality of books that can be printed using HP digital printing technologies. HP Indigo and HP Color Inkjet Web Presses offer publishers the means of producing high quality, colour rich art and coffee table books, hard and soft cover monochrome books, and short runs of highly specialised books for medical, legal and educational purposes. “Today’s publishers face rapidly changing market and economic conditions,” said Paul Randall, market development manager, Publishing Segment, EMEA, HP. “Publishing solutions based on digital printing from HP can help reduce the risks that publishers face when bringing titles to market, including overstocking, incurring storage costs and, ultimately, having to pulp unsold books.” High end colour books and covers can now be produced in larger formats using the recently launched HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press that handles large format sheets (B2) and can facilitate fast turnaround book production in short to medium runs. Books produced on HP digital presses may be printed on a wide range of coated and uncoated papers (including recycled stocks) in matt, semi-gloss and gloss finishes, giving publishers and book designers the opportunity to exercise creativity. The new HP SmartBooks Toolkit, shown for the first time at the London Book Fair, is an in depth financial modelling tool for publishers to use with individual titles to analyse the financial implications of printing conventionally,
digitally, or by both methods at different times over a two year life cycle. Whether a debut novel or a virtually sure fire book from an established writer, HP SmartBooks can help publishers plot the different phases of the book’s life. This will assist publishing companies in regulating their cash flow through the use of digital printing to help them benefit from the associated reductions in transport and storage costs. At this year’s show, there will be opportunities for publishers to meet with HP business development personnel and learn how the HP SmartBook Toolkit could help their businesses.
The next big thing in publishing – print! HP digital printing combines the advantages of offset litho quality with production immediacy and flexibility. Publishers can respond quickly to market demands and editorial changes and updates – a great advantage for content sensitive publications like textbooks, law books, travel guides and other books that need to compete with online information. Publishers are also able to generate income from their backlists without the major expense of a conventional reprint of thousands of copies. Print runs as low as one can be viable when printing digitally, and backlists need never again be “out of print.” Since their launch, more than 90 HP Color Inkjet Web Presses have been installed worldwide and have printed more than 25 billion pages – with a current rate of a billion pages per month. About 250 specialist book printers are using HP digital presses (HP Indigo and HP Color Inkjet Web Presses) in 50 countries across six continents. These digital presses are enabling publishers to “Think Global and Print Local” and adapt their printing strategies, reduce risk and better respond to demand in specific markets. Mimaki’s Media Certification Programme Mimaki has announced that it has partnered with Color Concepts, the independent creator of media profiles, to make available independent, third party certification of media for use with Mimaki’s JV400LX printer and latex inks. The Mimaki Media Certification Program (MMCP) is available to providers of media in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) that are appropriate for the JV400LX printer. Mimaki anticipates expanding this programme to other Mimaki printers and ink technologies in the future. “We are very excited to be launching this EMEA Media Certification Program,” said Mike Horsten, Marketing Manager of Mimaki Europe. “In working with Color Concepts to construct the programme, we focused on ease of participation on the part of media suppliers as well as building in extra benefits for approved media. This includes marketing by Mimaki on behalf of media suppliers at key trade shows and even in print advertising. Suppliers of approved media can also participate in a special swatch book programme that will give their products extra visibility in the marketplace.”
MMCP Benefits Media suppliers whose media is approved through the Mimaki Media Certification Program will be able to use MMCP logos that demonstrate a solid relationship with the Mimaki brand. They will also be able to take advantage of Mimaki’s marketing muscle and have their profiles available for download by JV400LX users at http://www.mymimaki.com, which will be launched shortly. Participants can already easily register, apply and submit profiling orders online at http://mimaki.color-base.com, where they will also be able to check on the status of their media certification. Mimaki will offer end users information about new available profiles or updates of their current profiles that have been downloaded via the MMCP system. Distributed in the UK & Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, its national sales manager, John de la Roche anticipates strong user demand. “Utilising correct profiles gets the most out of your Mimaki,” he says. “Working with
key media suppliers ensures our customers benefit from output of the highest quality.” Also as part of the programme, Color Concepts will produce special MMCP Media Swatch books printed to Mimaki’s quality standards. This process makes swatch books available with minimal effort on the part of the media supplier. The swatch books will be distributed free of charge to Mimaki dealers and distributors, latex customers, and at Mimaki tradeshow stands for a broad distribution throughout the EMEA region. “We chose to partner with Color Concepts for this important initiative,” added Horsten, “because they are the number one creator of external profiles and are very well respected in the industry. Color Concepts has its own lab equipped with printers for profiling. This means that media suppliers who do not have profiling systems in place can easily contract with Color Concepts to make those profiles as part of the certification process.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

Mondi’s new ColorLok campaign
With an online island treasure hunt, Mondi asks participants to find the treasure chest and unlock the benefits of ColorLok Technology – vivid colours, bold blacks and fast drying times on inkjet printers. After further expanding its range of ColorLok papers, global packaging and paper producer Mondi has launched a new campaign that highlights the benefits of ColorLok Technology. The fast drying times, vivid colours and bold blacks achieved with Mondi ColorLok papers are part of the company’s online treasure hunt, where players are led through a course of ColorLok Islands. The game prizes feature holidays for two to Koh Samui, Thailand; Tenerife, Canary Islands; and Malta. In addition, Mondi will give away four trips within Austria. For a chance to win one of these prizes, customers must enter a ColorLok code at www.mondigroup.com/ colorlok Codes can be found on promotional stickering on select A4, 80 g/m2 reams of Mondi papers with ColorLok Technology as well as lottery tickets distributed in magazines and by sales agents.
Further codes will also be issued on www.mondigroup.com/colorlok. “Mondi ColorLok brands bring an added value especially in smaller offices and home offices, where inkjet printers are most often used. Mondi has a wide range of ColorLok papers, which include high white, off white and recycled brands, offering customers a variety of options for any application,” explained Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. Mondi’s ColorLok Portfolio — Mondi offers twelve papers with ColorLok Technology, the latest being NAUTILUS Classic, a 100% recycled paper. ColorLok Technology is based on a class of paper additives that visibly enhance the print quality of inkjet documents printing while also providing faster drying time. A specific chemical interaction between additives and the pigment holds the pigment on the paper surface while the rest of the ink penetrates deep into the paper, resulting in the crisp, vivid print quality. Mondi’s ColorLok treasure hunt is online from now to 30th June, 2013.
Ashford Colour Press Expands Digital Publishing Capacity Ashford Colour Press, of Gosport, Hampshire has signed an agreement to purchase an HP T230 Color Inkjet Web Press to print short run books in mono and colour and to provide additional services to publishers. The agreement was signed on HP’s stand at Hunkeler Innovationdays where HP’s solutions for publishing were on show. The addition of the HP T230 Color Inkjet Web Press will not only benefit Ashford Colour Press, but also its sister company, Jellyfish Solutions, a marketing, creative services and print production management company with full access to Ashford Colour Press’s printing and finishing resources. “We were experiencing increased demand for production of multi-page books in mono, two and four colours in quantities between 50 and 2,000 copies,” explained Rob Hutcheson, managing director, Ashford Colour Press. “We were impressed with the HP T230 press’s ability to run full colour at 400ft/min while maintaining excellent, consistent quality.” Already familiar with digital production, Ashford Colour Press offers EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) ordering, as well as digital web and sheet fed printing. The company has seen the needs of its publishing customers change with the rise of digital media and increased requests for shorter runs and fast turnarounds to save on logistics and warehousing costs, as well as waste. With key customers in the academic and educational publishing sectors, quality and cost are significant factors — and print is not
the only thing they require. Ashford Colour Press also offers a range of binding options, CD/DVD duplication, global procurement and pack make up. With the new press and existing equipment, the company has created a flexible structure, better able to respond to the changes in the market resulting from e-books, online information, downloads and other digital media. “With the HP T230 press, publishers can now benefit from cost effective shorter runs from copies, with unit costs comparable to rates only previously achievable through litho production,” Hutcheson continued. “The press will be an excellent complementary technology to our conventional capabilities and will enable us to expand our business, provide a much broader service and have a real competitive advantage.” Between them, Ashford Colour Press and Jellyfish Solutions currently manage print production totalling more than £14 million for well known international publishers producing
books in the UK, Europe, the United States and the Far East. “Adding the T230 press will enable us to work closely with publishers looking to move into ARP (Automatic Replenishment) models, where books are printed in shorter print runs ensuring sufficient supply while not over-stocking,” said Hutcheson. “In this way, we can offer an affordable solution to publishers, improving their stock levels and cash flow whilst also bringing their backlists into print again.” The HP T230 Color Inkjet Web Press prints at up to 122m/min (400ft/min) in four colours on web widths from 203 to 558mm (8 to 22in). The press can print on coated and uncoated stocks (matt and gloss) from 60 to 215g/m2, providing the versatility to meet publishers’s specifications. Ashford Colour Press was established in 1981 and offers design, prepress, print, finishing, fulfilment and print management. There was a successful management buyout in 2002 led by the current directors Mark Jones, Rob Hutcheson and Allan Gray and last year the company became solely owned by management when it paid back the Venture Capital investment. The company has 128 employees and current printing services include sheet-fed digital and offset printing, digital web printing, colour inkjet and large format litho printing. Installation of the HP T230 Inkjet Web Press is scheduled for completion in March. More information is available at www.hp.com/ go/gsb, www.twitter.com/hpgraphicarts.

Epson supports students’ creativity The University of Huddersfield has taken delivery of four new Epson large format aqueous inkjet printers to keep up with increasing demand for high quality colour and mono digital print work within the School of Art, Design and Architecture. The School offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses including subjects such as Architecture, Contemporary Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Product Design, Fashion and Textiles and Photography. Explains George Stewart IT Technician, School of Art, Design and Architecture Print Bureau: “We were already using Epson printers, including a 64 inch wide format Stylus Pro 11880, to print students’ course and degree show work. The printers were performing well, giving us excellent quality mono and colour reproduction and were very easy to operate but with demand increasing we had to look at investing in more technology. We looked at other brands but decided we wanted to stick with Epson. It’s a brand we trust and we had been very impressed with the printers’ reliability and cost effectiveness.” The School went ahead, with guidance from large format suppliers Digital Photo Solutions, and invested in two Epson Stylus Pro 7890 24 inch printers, one Epson Stylus Pro 7900 24 inch and an Epson Stylus Pro 9890 44 inch printer. All offer an ideal combination of accurate colour reproduction with unbeatable productivity and are compatible with a wide range of media up to 1.5mm in thickness including glossy paper, matte paper, matte board, fine art paper and plain paper. The Print Bureau, located within the Technology Building Room at the university, is open Monday to Friday during term time and provides a large format printing service to approximately 2,800 students. “We don’t have a typical day as such,” say George. “There are certain times of the year when we are extremely busy – end of year shows and course deadlines during the year always create an increase in demand.” Students supply PDF, JPEG or TIFF files of their work which are then run through Adobe Photoshop, InDesign or Mirage Print software before printing on one of the Epson printers. “The print quality for graphics, drawings and photography is of high importance to us and our students,” says Stewart. “The Epson printers allow us to print on an extensive array of
media and are very well suited to the work we produce, from fine drawings to posters and banners to wallpaper, we can print it all here.” Using Epson’s UltraChrome 9 and 11 colour ink sets, the printers achieve one of the widest colour gamuts on the market, with consistently smooth gradations and photo-realistic image quality. Also, with three densities of black – standard photo or matte black (selected automatically depending on the media) plus light black and light light black – users can create striking mono output with a high contrast ratio, perfect tonal range and improved grey tones. In combination with the Epson TFP print head, featuring 360 micro-fine nozzles per colour, the printers deliver at high speed, incredibly sharp, grain free images which make them ideal for art, photographic and CAD applications. Martin Johns, market development manager, proGraphics, Epson, says: “It’s good to see the students and staff at the university using the Epson Stylus Pro range of printers across a wide variety of media and applications. Not only do the printers offer first class colour and mono reproduction but they also represent a big boost in productivity and remain cost-effective.” www.epson.co.uk
PrintIT! Winner visits Hunkeler Innovation days The winner of PrintIT! 2011/12, Aleesha Patel, has enjoyed fulfilling the last part of her prize — an all expenses paid trip to the bi-annual Hunkeler Innovation days event in Lucerne, Switzerland courtesy of Friedheim International. Hunkeler, a Swiss manufacturer of pre and post press equipment for continuous digital printing machines, hosted this year’s event – the tenth in the series – from 11-15 February. At this event, digital paper processing experts from across the world gather to discuss the latest technical developments and showcase their own innovations. Aleesha, a student at The Beauchamp College in Leicestershire, and her family spent their day meeting makers and shakers from print companies around the world and learning about the top of the range machines that they use. Stefan Hunkeler, chairman of the company holding the event, was delighted to meet them and was especially impressed with Aleesha, who explained her winning PrintIT! concept to him. Friedheim’s managing director, Mark Bristow, showed them around the Hunkeler stand and explained how their futuristic laser cutter can run at up to 150 metres a minute. Aleesha and her brother delighted the exhibitors with their exuberance and intelligent questions, their curiosity and their hunt for Swiss chocolates throughout the event!
Aleesha said: “It was a really interesting event that was different to anything I have done before. It was very nice to have Friedheim show us around the event and explain how some of the different print processes work… It has definitely opened my eyes to the career prospects within the print industry.” The PrintIT! programme is an industry wide educational initiative led by Proskills, which aims to raise young learners’ awareness of the ‘Print & Paper’ industry by researching and designing a promotional item. The scheme is now in its eighth year, and has reached more than 120,000 students. The 2011/12 programme had more than 9,000 entrants from 250 schools. Aleesha beat off an extremely high level of competition entries to be declared the overall winner at the awards ceremony held at Stationers Hall, London. As well as her trip to Switzerland, Aleesha won a state of the art FujiFilm SLR camera and a Pantone Capsure tool. Her school was rewarded with a QuarkXPress 9 licence, a Pantone essential kit, and Fuji Camera for use with students in the future. Aleesha said on winning the award: “I was nervous about being a category finalist but to have been selected as the overall winner is amazing. I am shaking. I would like to thank everyone and to all the sponsors, today has been amazing.” For further information on PrintIT! visit www.printit.org.uk or contact the PrintIT! NEW VISION ELIZABETH SHAW EASTER PACK New Vision Packaging has helped luxury chocolate brand Elizabeth Shaw create its most environmentally friendly Easter Egg box to date. The packaging design and sourcing specialist created the box for a 200g egg that was sold exclusively in Asda stores across the UK. Consisting of an A-frame, pinch pack design, the structure is made entirely of virgin grade card. The box has been designed so that the chocolate egg inside grips to the window cut-out, meaning that no additional fixtures are required internally to hold the product in place. The only plastic in the pack is the small amount used to bag the mint / crisp collections that are included alongside each egg. As well as the structural design, New Vision
Packaging also handled the manufacturing process for Elizabeth Shaw, overseeing production of both the Mint Collection Egg, and the Crisp Collection Egg cartons. Commenting on the project, Stephen Shortland, managing director of New Vision Packaging, said: “There is a lot of pressure on manufacturers when it comes to the amount of packaging used for seasonal products. You only have to look at the annual Easter Egg Packaging Report by Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson to see that everyone in the industry is under a great deal of scrutiny. We’re delighted to be continuing our long standing
relationship with Elizabeth Shaw and to have created a streamline pack that meets all of the client’s needs and achieves shelf standout. The fact that we have achieved all of this and developed the brand’s most environmentally friendly Easter packaging at the same time is testament to the efforts of the team.” New Vision Packaging completed the Easter Egg project as part of its sole supply agreement with Elizabeth Shaw, which was announced in 2012. Elizabeth Shaw is part of New Vision Packaging’s extensive confectionery client portfolio. The company supplies packaging to some of the biggest names in the industry, including Thorntons, Cadbury and Burnt Sugar, and is an approved supplier for many of the UK’s major retailers. The Langham Press Installs MGI DP8700XL
The Langham Press, a print business based in Foxton, just outside of Cambridge, has installed the area’s first MGI Meteor DP8700XL, a digital press that is making headway in a highly competitive marketplace. The French built machine, gradually establishing itself in the UK, was supplied via Print and Reprographic Services Ltd (PRS) to The Langham Press on behalf of MGI Technology, the front line importer that has offices and showroom facilities in Hemel Hempstead. David Arnold of The Langham Press was looking for a digital press to
complement the company’s Komori litho equipment and had considered various manufacturers: “The MGI Meteor offered a different perspective with its unique capabilities. The obvious attraction of the MGI press is that it provides our customers with a high quality reproduction. On top of that, however, it can print in sheet sizes and formats that were previously only available to us in litho form. Jobs designed to be six page A4 landscape or eight page A4 portrait, for example, work well on the Meteor. The machine can also print on to plastic, which again is unusual. This is the sort of capability that could open up new revenue streams for us.” The Meteor is different from other digital presses: it is built very much like an offset machine with a digital print engine at its heart. One of the main attractions of the unit is its reliability and cost effective method of print production — there are no click charges, but a toner coverage model of charging is used instead. “We have found running costs to be low, especially when compared to paying for clicks. The equipment is very reliable, and we have experienced no major problems since the Meteor was installed. PRS and MGI have looked after us and are very supportive,” added David Arnold. The Langham Press has already seen an increase in digital printing business, complementing what they can offer with litho print from the Komori. There is no doubt that the interest from customers is based around the uniqueness of the Meteor press. The machine differentiates itself and its owners from the usual digital offering and can provide users with a variety of revenue streams as it can produce work of various types – an ideal offering for many printers. www.langhampress.co.uk
Optichrome Installs UK’s First Xeikon 8500
Xeikon and Optichrome have announced details of the installation of the UK’s first Xeikon 8500 digital colour press, along with details regarding the now 50% contribution being made to company turnover by its digital operation. Commenting on both the new equipment and the advance in digital production, John Heywood, Managing Director of Optichrome, said: “As a business we have made a conscious effort to expand our digital presence in recent years. The decision to upgrade our original Xeikon DCP/50D to the new Xeikon 8500 model in 2012 has been a major step forward in that process.” The £5.5 million turnover business is delighted with the 50% contribution from digital. “Digital print production is very different to the “pile it high, sell it cheap” mentality of far too many litho print businesses. The digital work that we handle requires a lot of data manipulation to achieve the sophisticated level of personalisation required by our clients. This work cannot be handled any other way, and it is the level of expertise provided by Optichrome that delivers some 80% of the profit that we are enjoying,” said Mr Heywood. The introduction of the Xeikon 8500 came at just the right time for the company. “Our previous Xeikon machine, the DCP/50D, had been a
tremendous servant to our business, producing a large percentage of our digital output for the last eight years, but the technology was beginning to look a little dated,” said Optichrome Chairman Ted Stephens. “We purchased it initially as no other digital product could produce quality, colour duplexed six page work — a popular format in the financial sector. What really surprised us is that when we were seeking a replacement machine at drupa 2012, we quickly realised that Xeikon was still the best option available on the market today at a realistic price, so we opted for the latest version of the Xeikon web fed press, the Xeikon 8500.” The web fed architecture of the machine provides significant productivity benefits to Xeikon digital colour press users. This, coupled with the data integrity benefits of single pass duplex printing, gives Optichrome a significant advantage when talking to the financial community about variable data print production. “Our sales team can approach such businesses with confidence, knowing that they are able to talk to the client about a very unique solution. Where work involves variable input front and back it is “mission critical” that the right data is printed on the reverse of the sheet. By printing them at the same time, as happens on the Xeikon, such mistakes are eliminated from the printing stage,” said Mr Heywood. Such works comes to Optichrome from the City of London, and from what is viewed by many as the new centre of the pensions world, which focuses itself on Worthing and Reigate. Run lengths of the work handled vary wildly, as is typical in the digital world, with a recent job requiring just 20 copies sitting alongside a print run of 40,000 — a pensions based publication consisting of 28 pages, all containing variable data. “Financial information is rarely easy reading for most people. Our customers are working closely with graphic designers to help illustrate the information in a more accessible way. The graphic designers are beginning to understand the capabilities of our Xeikon equipment, and are getting to know how well their work can shine with the product that we are printing on.” In addition to all of this digital excitement, Optichrome is this year celebrating its half century as a business. The company has organised a series of events involving both staff and customers throughout 2013. “This is testament to both management past and present, and the current team of employees,” added Mr Heywood. www.xeikon.com

Unibind launches new thermal binder Unibind UK has raised the standard in desktop office binding with its new thermal Unibinder machine. The innovative and stylish product is the latest to emerge from the Horsham based company’s digital arm. It uses thermal binding for maximum efficiency and includes a crimping tool, meaning users no longer have to stock a large variety of spine sizes. The Unibinder 8.2’s performance is as impressive as its design and flexibility. It is capable of binding up to eight documents at one time with up to 340 sheets, and is able to crimp up to 120 sheets using only three spine sizes of UniCovers. The fully automatic process takes just three simple steps and requires no warm up time, allowing SME customers to produce high quality documents with a super-strong permanent bond. The company has also introduced a new part exchange scheme allowing customers to trade in their old or faulty
machines when buying a Unibinder 8.2. Unibind UK MD Tsol Keoshgerian said: “Quite simply this is our best desktop office based binding machine yet. I think what is appealing to our customers with this product is the impressive mix of great looks and incredible flexibility, all at an affordable price. We acknowledge that we are all trading in challenging economic times so we have also taken the step of offering to part exchange older machines for the Unibinder 8.2, something few other companies can claim to do. Resolution unveils dust covers for HP Designjet printers Resolution, trading as HP Plotter, has introduced their Fugazi Range of Designjet dust covers which are manufactured in the UK. Starting with the Designjet T120 and T520 range, Resolution has plans to roll out covers for the remaining HP Designjet T and Z series models later in the year. Designed to look good both at home and in the office, and made from strong and durable ‘rip stop’ nylon, the stylish T120 and T520 Designjet dust covers will help to protect your investment from dirt, dust and spills. It also comes with a useful front pocket (with a free service history log card) allowing you to keep track of work carried out on your printer, any support contract details as well as useful re-ordering information — all in one place! · Made from strong ‘rip stop’ nylon – not PVC · Tear resistant and lightweight · Ideal for hostile dusty environments or printer storage · Lasts for years · Easy to fold and pack away · Will not degrade and become brittle like plastic covers · Protects from dust and scratches · Useful front pocket · Free service history log/re-ordering info card MD Nicola Bray explains: “As an engineering company specialising in HP Designjet printers, we often attend customer sites where, after carrying out a full service and clean of their Designjet, the fault is resolved without fitting any spare parts. The majority of our customers fall into the architectural, engineering and construction sector and often their printers are used in dusty or hostile environments. Consequently, this clogs the inner workings of the
printer and cause spurious error messages as well as premature wear and tear of parts. A typical fault would include a sensor becoming so dirty that the printer is unable to load paper. As an expensive piece of equipment it makes sense to minimise downtime and wear and tear by using a dust protector”. The complementary range of media dust covers go hand in hand with the Designjet Dust Covers — and are adjustable, being supplied in two sizes: SMALL 24”-36” (for A1/A0 rolls) and MEDIUM 42”-44” (for A0+ rolls). The bright colours are designed to allow papers to be quickly and easily distinguished — ideal for the partially sighted — while the ergonomic design allows for easy fitting and labelling. “We feel that the Fugazi media covers complement our range of Designjet dust covers. We were inspired by our many customers who find it annoying to sort through various rolls of paper in order to work out ‘which one is which’; often their paper/media is dirty or damaged and they end up having to lose a metre or so every time they re-load it. While it isn’t such a problem for a £7-£10 roll of paper it is an issue where some high end papers and medias cost upwards of £100 per roll. More importantly though, the paper has been left accumulating dust which is then pulled into the printer. Over time this dust causes increased downtime and higher maintenance costs. Our Fugazi Media Covers should help to reduce this”. The Designjet Dust Covers are expected to be around the £75.00+VAT price mark. Enquiries for other T and Z series covers and older Designjet models welcomed. For more information email: Nicola.Bray@hpplotter.co.uk

Fujifilm announces Jet Press 540W digital inkjet web press Fujifilm has announced the commercial availability of its Jet Press 540W digital inkjet web press (formerly known as Jet Press W). Launched as a technology showcase at drupa 2012, the press is targeted at high quality, short run digital print such as leaflets and personalised magazines, as well as school textbooks, book printing and newspapers. Fujifilm’s Jet Press 540W features a unique design that enables duplex printing within a single tower. This results in an extremely compact footprint of 6.6m x 2.8m. Supporting both inkjet and non-coated papers of between 64-157 gsm, with a maximum printable width of 540mm, the press offers a top printing speed of 127 m/min and ultra high quality printing of 600 dpi, upgradeable to 1200dpi later in 2013. Fujifilm’s XMF Workflow system is used to drive the front end of the Jet Press 540W and allows full variable data printing. Already popular amongst commercial printers for its speed and flexibility in handling work across digital and offset print processes, XMF is continuously evolving, and today boasts an improved user interface which increases automation, efficiency and ultimately profitability. It represents one of the most comprehensive and advanced production management systems on the market, addressing many of the issues faced by today’s print service providers. The Jet Press 540W also utilises the company’s own screening technology, which is based on FM screening and allows for smooth colour tones and sharp text as well as eliminating moire and rosette patterns. The press will be available as a standalone system, or as a complete solution with the integration of Fujifilm’s own post press equipment (consisting of a sheet cutter and sheet cut + roll). It can also integrate with post press
equipment from Hunkeler — predominantly for newspaper use — and Muller Martini equipment for commercial print. This means that it will slot seamlessly into a production environment, producing finished printed products within days of initial installation. The Jet Press 540W uses Fujifilm’s high performance VIVIDIA ink, developed specifically to facilitate superb image quality. The VIVIDIA ink allows high density images to be printed at high speed, with less ink transfer from sheet to sheet, with high quality reproduction possible even on thin paper. Fujifilm has used its experience and knowledge to develop both pigment and dye-based inks for use with this press which, when combined with the ultra-compact footprint, maximise the application flexibility and versatility of the machine. The VIVIDIA WP-S pigment ink features a wider colour gamut, suffers from less ‘see through’ on the page and can be used in nearly all graphic applications. The VIVIDIA WD-S dye ink also has a wide colour gamut, but provides better water resistance when used with inkjet papers. The combination of short-run and variable data capabilities allows the Jet Press 540W to accommodate a wide variety of jobs and opens up new opportunities for a growing number of applications requiring these particular features. It can also help to reduce paper waste when compared with commercial web presses, which makes the press a more sustainable solution. “We are excited to be launching our digital inkjet web press to the market,” comments Taro Aoki, manager of product development and marketing, Graphic System Division, FUJIFILM Europe “We had a lot of interest in the technology showcase at drupa and have high expectations for European beta sites in the near future.” For more information, visit www.fujifilm.eu/eu/products/graphic-systems/, or www.youtube.com/FujifilmGSEurope or follow Fujifilm on @FujifilmPrintEU

Sign & Digital UK Awards to stand alone
The organisers announce the awards will be held separately from the show this year with times and dates to be announced at a later date. The Sign & Digital UK awards represent the most prestigious open competition for the UK sign and display market. Now in their third year, the awards encourage sign makers and digital print providers to enter their best work to highlight their creative skills in sign and display. Alan Caddick, Senior Marketing Manager comments; “The awards have become so successful in their first two years, it has been decided they should stand on their own two feet, separate from the exhibition. By doing this, we can help grow the awards and the show year on year independently.” Please visit the show website www.signanddigitaluk.com, where you can click on the Awards tab at the top of the page, which will give you further information. Rudi Blackett, show director also comments; “The Sign & Digital UK awards is a fantastic networking event and the idea is to give the suppliers, sign makers and industry leaders the ideal opportunity to network and socialise with business contacts and colleagues where they will be able to entertain customers and help celebrate the skill, innovation and flair within the industry. Holding the event separately from the show is an exciting move that will offer great opportunities for suppliers and sign makers alike.” For further information on the awards, the latest show news and to register for FREE entry to the show please visit the show website www.signanddigitaluk.com.

Batteries not required As Martin Christie mentioned last month, the annual photographic exhibition, Focus on Imaging at the NEC, was well worth a day trip. Not only do many products and services overlap, but in combining trade and public visitors, it is an interesting barometer of current digital imaging demand.
A
s expected, the battle of the camera manufacturers is currently intense as they compete to exploit ever decreasing gaps in the market decimated by the popularity of stills and video phones. But to some extent the latter have only removed a section of customers that were temporary browsers in convenience photography. All the signs are that the core business of the professional, enthusiast and hobbyist photographer is still very healthy. Certainly attendance was as good as ever, and stands full of kit and all manner of accessories, showcased a broad range of opportunities for retail products, and no shortage of consumer interest in acquiring them. Despite photography taking some high profile casualties in the High Street in recent months, the continuing popularity of the trade and retail expo underlines the verdict that it was poor management decisions rather than lack of demand that caused the demise. The major manufacturers flagship stands were of course mobbed by enthusiasts desperate to handle, if only briefly, expensive hardware they had previously only seen in magazines, and were unlikely to get close to again. Such things are the stuff of dreams to all but the well healed or seriously financed professional. With some lenses alone costing more than the average amateur would spend on photography in a lifetime, most visitors could only dream of a lottery windfall to fulfil their fantasies. Fortunately there were plenty of more affordable items to fill the goody bag, and some of the biggest crowds were around the gadget and accessory stands, Bulging with all manner of bits and bobs for everything photographic. If you think photography is just about a camera and a lens, think again. You wouldn’t believe how many gizmos and brackets you can bolt on to improve your image capture experience. Things you never know you needed until you saw them. Things you just have to have in the camera bag, even if you hardly ever needed them. These aftermarket products are the lifeblood of remaining retailers as the profit margin of the cameras themselves is squeezed by the relentless daily pressure of the internet. They are everything from literally nuts and special bolts to complicated lighting devices, as well as sophisticated software and plugs-ins for image editing. There’s even a little corner still for old fashioned film. All of these items serve a similar purpose: to add a value purchase in a market where the core product — the camera — is pretty well price fixed by the competitive environment. In the same way, the print on demand digital outlet has had to explore other related avenues in order to expand its offering to customers and attempt to restore some margin of advantage. Not so many years ago it was the so-called SOHO market -small office, home office — that made inroads into our core business. Nowadays the office, and even the whole creative chain of command can be mobile, and
operating from different places, so the role of the studio as a central location has changed again, and will continue to develop as the consequences of this transient environment evolve. That’s another column in itself. But for the immediate, it’s worth looking at a selection of practical profitable solutions for the print room that don’t involve hi-tech training, complex technology or even batteries. Although a good section of print enhancement exhibits at Focus was devoted to digital manipulation, there was still room for more traditional skills like mounting and framing, adding further value to the output at relatively modest cost. Anyone doing quality digital printing on a large format inkjet will have got involved in finishing at one level or another, whether trimming and laminating or mounting on foamboard. It’s not such a large step to move on to other options which require the basics of hand-eye co-ordination, and can really improve the service to the customer. I got into stretching canvas prints onto wooden frames as a service, initially with artists who found that at busy times existing framers couldn’t cope, and then with general customers who wanted their nice images looking all artistic on the wall, or as a present for a friend. Inevitably, this demand has to be served to a price and to a time, so I chose options that made this possible, bearing in mind limited space like most print shops. A big table at a decent working height, however, is enough. Proper framers of course will have a workshop with wood working implements, cutters and powered tools for fixing and stretching accurately. But I’m not competing with proper framers, nor charging their prices. I found the simplest solution was to buy in existing canvas frames which can be sourced through the art trade at a reasonable price, and in standard sizes, and then simply print to that size, cropping or expanding the image where necessary, In addition to the facing image you need to allow a border to wrap around the frame, so for example, with my Epson 24inch printer I can produce an A2 canvas print or equivalent with at least three inches of extra material all round — enough to cover a frame an inch and a quarter deep and have enough spare to grip on. The gripper that does the stretching is a simple hand tool with a broad head, pulling the material tight with one hand while securing it to the back of the frame with a staple gun. First line the image up square on the fold lines, tack a staple either side
April 2013 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
to secure it evenly, and then work your way round with the stretcher tool. Simple. Well it is with a bit of practise! The excess canvas is trimmed with a sharp craft knife, and the corners cut and folded back in. A final touch is taping the raw edges for neatness. If you are leaving the sides of the canvas plain, a fair amount of skill is needed getting the image to line up all the way round. Some canvas may also vary in how it stretches- it might have more elasticity in one direction than another. An alternative is to extend the image into the wrap-around area, either by a simple enlargement or a mirror extension of the background in Photoshop. This make take a little bit of time on the computer, but can save time and frustration at the framing. Tips learnt are not to cut too many corners, literally. Only use decent quality canvas, and good quality frames, otherwise either may distort during the operation resulting in sagging and ripples in the surface. Cheap canvas may not print colours accurately, and may not be scratch-proof with pigment inks. Photos in particular can be further enhanced by the application of a varnish, which also improves resistance to scratches and the like. You can get individual stretcher bars that can be mixed and matched to make custom frames, but I have found it easier to stick to a standard formula as far as size goes. The end result is an attractive product that will at least double the perceived value of the print to the customer and can be turned around within twenty four hours. The customer may be able to get a better price via the internet but the web cannot compete with that turnaround. Nor can it help and advise on exactly how large an image can be printed, and what the alternatives are. I almost always do a little or sometimes a lot of image manipulation on a canvas print knowing how the file on my monitor will finally appear from the printer, just to ensure the customer is thrilled

with the impact of the finished item. If they are not they are always going to blame the printer, not their photography ! The stretched canvas box frame can be further enhanced by a variety of frame surrounds, it’s just a matter of how far you want to go down the finishing road. Finished or uncut frame lengths, along with almost everything else you need, can be supplied by Lion who have a pretty comprehensive catalogue, as well as years of experience. I should mention here Innova, who were also at Focus, and supply some of the best art papers at very good prices. They also have a Jetmaster framing system which is an economy alterative to wooden framing. It consists of a prepared pack of perforated card which folds to form a stiff box frame. It comes in two sizes, A4 and A5 and is suitable for toner prints as well as inkjet. Having sampled the system, the limitation is the size in that it is quite a fiddle to do properly, and result in a product you can’t charge much of a premium for. A large, sturdier item, or a smaller square suitable for the popular Instagram images might be a better choice. I never manage to escape Focus without buying something, and this time it was also for the finishing department in the form of a mount cutter. This uses an angled blade to cut a neat bevel edge window into sheet card to make an attractive surround that can stand alone in a package or fit into a conventional frame. The art card, 1.4mm thick, can be sourced in all sorts of colours, including the core itself, and A1 size sheets can be re-used several times for value as the centre cut out can then itself be cut out to a small size, and so on. Once again, a commercial framer will probably have an expensive machine to do this, but then he will also charge anywhere from £5 for an A4 mount to £25 for a large one. Using a simple kit from Logan costing under £50, and using some cheap card to practise on, I was soon able to knock out professional looking mounts approved by some of my discerning artist customers. Apart from the therapeutic benefits of getting away from the computer to use a ruler and pencil and accurately calculate real dimensions and angles — basic skills that are rapidly becoming forgotten — an attractive window mount really boosts the look and feel of the simplest print. Regardless of the image size, the inner and outer dimensions of the mount can be cut to fit any desired frame, another example how real bonus value can be added at relatively little cost. Cyclus campaign supports Rwandan children Arjowiggins Graphic has donated over one thousand exercise books to school children in Rwanda as part of its Cyclus campaign. The 1,385 books will be used by the SOS Children’s Villages charity to support children in primary school education in Africa. Antalis, one of the distributors for Cyclus in the UK, supported the campaign entitled ‘Do you believe in Recycled Paper?’. Every time a customer requests a sample pack of Cyclus 100% recycled paper from the campaign dedicated website an A4 school exercise book is donated to the SOS Children’s Villages. Marian Thomasson, Marketing Communications Manager at Antalis explains the charity’s work: “Almost all children in Rwanda are enrolled in primary school, but many drop out soon after enrolment - primarily due to poverty. This results in almost one in four children failing to attend primary school, leading to 23 per cent of the country’s young people aged 15-24 years being unable to read or write.” “We’re delighted that we’ve managed to support the donation of over a thousand books to help the campaign so far. Resources such as exercise books are often unavailable for children in Rwanda, so it’s great to know that these donations can really enhance the lives of children at the SOS Children’s Villages.” The SOS Children’s Villages campaign gives 1,649 children in Rwanda the opportunity to gain a primary school education. To date Arjowiggins Graphic has donated 1,385 notebooks to the SOS Children’s Villages campaign in Rwanda, which has helped: • 430 school children in Byumba • 418 school children in Gikongoro • 204 school children in Kayonza • 597 school children in Kigali
The SOS Children’s Villages school cooperates with public schools in the local area around the Children’s Village. The teachers at the SOS school share educational experiences and materials with teachers from the public schools, and thus the SOS school helps improve the quality of teaching so that more children in Kayonza can gain a quality education. As evidence of the impact this has on education, in 2012 the SOS school in Kayonza was ranked the 12th best school out of 68 in the area. Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic, said: “Enabling customers to interact with the campaign by donating an exercise book when they request a sample pack helped raise awareness of the great work the SOS Children’s Village is doing. We hope the Cyclus exercise books we have donated can help the SOS Children’s Village to support even more children in Rwanda to reach primary school education.” CASE STUDY – When Celine and her siblings lost their parents, her oldest brother took care of the family with the help of SOS Children’s Villages family programme. Unfortunately, he soon became involved in crime, and abandoned his younger siblings, leaving the family alone without a carer. However, Celine and her siblings came to the SOS Children’s Village in Kayonza where they can receive a quality education. Celine is now in second grade at the SOS school, and her favourite subjects are English, Kinyarwanda and Mathematics. Arjowiggins Graphic de-inking trial with HP Arjowiggins Graphic in conjunction with HP has initiated a second extended industrial trial at its Greenfied deinking plant using waste paper containing 5% of HP Indigo printed paper. The relationship with HP is aimed at improving the ability to de-ink printed materials from HP Indigo and HP inkjet digital presses. This will ensure that paper from HP Indigo Liquid Electrophotographic (LEP) and inkjet digital print jobs can be recycled and ultimately avoid landfills. While currently the amount of LEP and inkjet materials found in the recycling process is small relative to analogue prints such as offset lithography, the use of these types of digital printing technologies will increase. It is therefore essential for the industry to develop effective solutions to ensure compatibility with recycling mills, such as those operated by Arjowiggins Graphic, when digital prints become a more significant portion of the recovered paper stream.
The results from the latest trial confirm that a minimum of 5% HP Indigo print in the waste stream can be used without detriment to yield or quality of the de-inked pulp. Andrew Findlay, Arjowiggins Graphic R&D Director, said: “This confirmation of the first trial, in conjunction with laboratory protocols in the process of being developed by HP, provides a solid base line for the future optimisation of de-inking chemistry or the exploration of increased levels of Indigo printed paper in the waste supply.” www.arjowigginsgreen.com

Taopix Portfolio Version 3.5 Released Photo book and gift software manufacturer, Taopix, has announced the release of Taopix Portfolio version 3.5. With more than 200 enhancements and features, produced by the development team based at Taopix HQ in Newcastle upon Tyne. Taopix Portfolio has now been adopted by over 400 print service providers and pro labs worldwide as a photo book and gift design, file delivery and ordering tool. It is a true, end to end platform encompassing a fully featured e-commerce platform with shopping cart and payment gateway integrations as well as a dedicated back end production module to process incoming customers jobs. One new feature within the designer application is Straighten Horizon: a clever tool that allows the end user to straighten pictures that have been taken at a misaligned angle; previously this required photo editing software. This feature, coupled with the greatly enhanced crop tool, means that straightening and cropping images has never been easier. There are also many new business tools within the new version that allow the PSP to engage with partners to sell photo merchandise and track the
origin of orders to award commission. These tools can also work for the retail sector whereby the origin of orders can be analysed by store location. The new version also contains an External User Authentication API that allows Taopix customers and their brand partners to use a single database containing user login and password data to operate multiple platforms. The key benefit to the end user is that they can use one login and password to access their accounts within different systems. Says James Gray, Taopix CEO “This new version is testament to our core beliefs – we want to give our customers the tools they need to be successful, both new software features for their end users and important business tools for them. Taopix Portfolio is not just a fully featured design application for the consumer or photographer, it has to be backed up by robust features that help the PSP get to market and win business - features such as gift cards and vouchers as well as data export to marketing engines and MIS systems. It has to deliver on all fronts and it does”. Discover more at Taopix.com

Double your money – mistakes are good Remember when you were a tiny toddler? Well no of course you don’t but your Mum or Dad will tell you and indeed you know it anyway, learning to walk is a tricky thing. You probably started by crawling a bit, then daringly standing up and eventually taking those cute faltering steps, the slightest mistake and you’re falling down. Well if we all gave up then, there would be no human race and a good thing too you might say. The point of this is that just because you fell down as a baby didn’t mean you gave up, you kept on trying and leaning how the process worked. Eventually you succeed and then there is no stopping you. Mistakes are good, well maybe not good but not always a disaster. How else do you learn? Yes, making bad choices is all part of the learning experience. The person you are is the sum of your experiences, both good and bad. As long as you learn something from errors along the way, rather than be weighed down by them, then you have benefited. Sure, there are mistakes where the consequences are enormous, driving too fast and killing someone, taking the shortcut across the quicksands at night or investing in that Ponzi scheme would fall into that category. However at a more mundane level if the consequence is not the loss of life, home or livelihood then I think I’m entitled
Scanning for profit Contex, a developer of wide format scanning and imaging solutions has introduced Nextimage 3.1, a free upgrade to its wide format scanning software. to the view that an error is nothing more than education. However making the same mistake several times over is simply stupid and clearly a very good way to lose money. As they say, doing the same thing always brings the same result. A hugely valuable trick is to take a little time and ask a simple question, what have I learnt, or what have we learnt and how will I/we act in the future? Of course it may not be a quantifiable mistake just something that has not panned out as expected. This is the time you should question, examine and explore exactly what is not working and find out why and of course act accordingly. At the same time concentrate on those areas that are succeeding and examine those just as diligently, hopefully this will teach you how to repeat that success and highlight what has gone wrong elsewhere. You can’t change the past but you can learn from it and maybe affect the future. “If we look back on our past life we shall see that one of the most usual experiences is that we have been helped by our mistakes.” WINSTON CHURCHILL ROBIN SMITH is a business consultant, mentor to The Princes Trust and numerous smaller businesses as well as lecturing on negotiating techniques. Nextimage’s enhancements to the adaptive thresholding algorithm improves the users’ experience for scanning both old and new monochrome documents by cleaning the background while preserving details in the grayscale. The new auto size algorithm ensures higher quality scans by precisely determining the width of documents against the background. The algorithm also optimises documents that have very fine lines and fills. For more information about Nextimage 3.1 visit: www.contex.com

The copy shop hand out In most copy shops, the photocopier is out of order every now and then. One print receptionist had answered question after question from the customers. Finally one day, she just smiled and handed them this sheet. The copier is out of order! Yes, we have called the service man. Yes, he will be in today. No, we cannot fix it. No, we do not know how long it will take. No, we do not know what caused it. No, we do not know who broke it. Yes, we are keeping it. No, we do not know what you are going to do now. Thank You
Plain Talking A doctor examining a woman who had been rushed to the Emergency Room, took the husband aside, and said, “I don’t like the looks of your wife at all.” “Me neither doc,” said the husband. “But she’s a great cook and really good with the kids.”
Backwards thinking Some of these may be revived 45s but new readers have sent them in so apologies to you CSN/QPP oldies. 50 I went to the Doctors the other day, and he said, ‘Go to Bournemouth, it’s great for flu’ So I went — and I got it. 49 A seal walks into a club… 48 Went to the corner shop — bought four corners. 47 So I met this gangster who pulls up the back of people’s pants, it was Wedgie Kray. 46 I’ll tell you what I love doing more than anything: trying to pack myself in a small suitcase. I can hardly contain myself. 45 I tried water polo but my horse drowned. 44 A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces: ‘I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.’ 43 You see my next-door neighbour worships exhaust pipes; he’s a catholic converter. 42 I’ve got a friend who’s fallen in love with two school bags, he’s bisatchel. 41 Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly but when they lit a fire in the craft, it sank; proving once and for all that you can’t have your kayak and heat it..
40 ‘I said to this train driver “I want to go to Paris”. He said “Eurostar?” I said, “I’ve been on telly but I’m no Dean Martin”‘. 39 ‘My phone will ring at 2 in the morning, and my wife’ll look at me and go, “Who’s that calling at this time?’ “I don’t know! If I knew that we wouldn’t need the bloody phone!” 38 A lorry-load of tortoises crashed into a trainload of terrapins, it was a turtle disaster. 37 I swear, the other day I bought a packet of peanuts, and on the packet it said, “may contain nuts.” Well, YES! That’s what I bought the buggers for! You’d be annoyed if you opened it and a socket set fell out!” Lateral Thinking Tommy Cooper’s surreal non-equiturs still raise a laugh today. 36 I backed a horse last week at 101. It came in at quarter past four. 35 ‘I went down the local supermarket. I said, “I want to make a complaint, this vinegar’s got lumps in it”, he said, “Those are pickled onions”. 34 There was a man who entered a local paper’s pun contest… He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did. 33 I was having dinner with Garry Kasparov and there was a check tablecloth. It took him two hours to pass me the salt.. 32 ‘Four fonts walk into a bar the barman says “Oi — get out! We don’t want your type in here” 31 ‘So I went to the Chinese restaurant and this duck came up to me with a red rose and says, “Your eyes sparkle like diamonds”. I said, “Waiter, I asked for a-ROMATIC duck” ‘ . 30 I’m in great mood tonight because the other day I entered a competition and I won a years supply of Marmite…one jar. 29 ‘I was in Tesco’s and I saw this man and woman wrapped in a barcode. I said, “Are you two an item?” ‘. 28 ‘A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse “But why?” they asked, as they moved off “because,” he said “I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.” 27 Went to the paper shop — it had blown away.
26 I cleaned the attic with the wife the other day. Now I can’t get the cobwebs out of her hair. 25 ‘The other day I sent my girlfriend a huge pile of snow. I rang her up; I said, “Did you get my drift?” 24 ‘A sandwich walks into a bar. The barman says “Sorry we don’t serve food in here” . 23 ‘A priest, a rabbi and a vicar walk into a bar. The barman says, “Is this some kind of joke?” 22 Slept like a log last night and woke up in the fireplace. 21 A jump-lead walks into a bar. The barman says, “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.” 20 I met a Dutch girl with inflatable shoes last week, phoned her up to arrange a date but unfortunately she’d popped her clogs. 19 ‘I rang up British Telecom, I said, “I want to report a nuisance caller”, he said “Not you again”.’ 18 My therapist says I have a preoccupation with vengeance. We’ll see about that.” 17 ‘When Susan’s boyfriend proposed marriage to her she said: “I love the simple things in life, but I don’t want one of them for my husband”. 16 I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn’t find any. 15 ‘There’s two fish in a tank, and one says to the other “How do you drive this thing?”. 14 ‘A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named ‘Amal.’ The other goes to a family in Spain, they name him Juan’. Years later Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, “But they are twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Amal.” 13 ‘I saw this bloke chatting up a cheetah; I thought, “He’s trying to pull a fast one.” 12 My mother-in-law fell down a wishing well, I was amazed, I never knew they worked. 11 ‘I went to the doctor’s the other day and I said, ‘Have you got anything for wind?’ So he gave me a kite.
8 Another one was: Doc, I can’t stop singing the ‘Green Green Grass of Home’. He said: ‘That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome’. ‘Is it common? ‘I asked. ‘It’s not unusual’ he replied. . 7 Two aerials meet on a roof — fall in love — get married. The ceremony was rubbish — but the reception was brilliant. 6 Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one — and let the other one off. 5 ‘I said to the Gym instructor “Can you teach me to do the splits?” He said, “How flexible are you?” I said, “I can’t make Tuesdays”’. 4 ‘A young blonde woman is distraught because she fears her husband is having an affair, so she goes to a gun shop and buys a handgun. The next day she comes home to find her husband in bed with a beautiful redhead. She grabs the gun and holds it to her own head. The husband jumps out of bed, begging and pleading with her not to shoot herself. Hysterically the blonde responds to the husband, “Shut up...you’re next!” 3 ‘Dyslexic man walks into a bra...’. 2 ‘I went to the zoo the other day, there was only one dog in it, it was a shitzu.’ 1 A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: ‘Ugh, that’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen!’ The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: ‘The driver just insulted me!’ The man says: ‘You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I’ll hold your monkey for you.’
A collection of Great Advice, Admissions and Questions
Never raise your hands to your kids. It leaves your groin unprotected. I’m not into working out. My philosophy: No pain, no pain. I’m still trying to figure out why kamikaze pilots wore helmets. Ever wonder if illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup? I always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific. Did you ever notice when you blow in a dog’s face he gets mad at you? THE TOP 10 But when you take him in a car he 10 ‘A man walks into a bar with a roll sticks his head out the window. of tarmac under his arm and says: Have you ever noticed? You have to stay in shape. My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She’s 97 today and we don’t know where she is. The reason most people play golf is to wear clothes they would not be caught dead in otherwise. I have six locks on my door, all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. I had a linguistics professor who said that it’s man’s ability to use language that makes him the dominant species on the planet. That may be, but I think there’s one other thing that separates us from animals. We aren’t afraid of vacuum cleaners. The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four persons is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they are okay, then it’s you. TV ads show you how detergents take out bloodstains. I think if you’ve got a bloodstained T-shirt, maybe laundry isn’t your biggest problem. I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say ‘because it’s such a beautiful animal.’ There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I only have photographs of her. A lady came up to me on the street and pointed at my suede jacket. ‘You know a cow was murdered for that jacket’? She sneered. I replied in a psychotic tone, ‘I didn’t know there were any witnesses. Now I’ll have to kill you too!’ Why does Sea World have a seafood restaurant? I’m halfway through my fish-burger and I realise, ‘Oh my God... I could be eating a slow learner.’
Helpful tips... Before attempting to remove stubborn stains from a garment always circle the stain in permanent pen so that when you remove the garment from the washing machine you can easily locate the area of the stain and check that it has gone. High blood pressure sufferers. A salesman went into a dentist and said, “how much will it cost to have teeth taken out” “£90” said the dentist.
Simply cut yourself and bleed for a while, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Olympic athletes. Conceal the fact that you have taken performance enhancing drugs by simply running a little slower and letting someone else win. Heavy smokers. Don’t throw away those filters from the end of your cigarettes. Save them up and within a few years you’ll have enough to insulate your coffin. Create instant designer stubble by sucking a magnet and dipping your chin in a bowl of iron fillings. X File fans. Create the effect of being abducted by aliens by drinking two bottles of vodka. You’ll invariably wake up in a strange place the following morning, having had your memory mysteriously ‘erased’. A sheet of sandpaper makes a cheap and effective substitute for costly maps when visiting the Sahara desert. Convince neighbours that you have invented a ‘SHRINKING’ device by ruffling your hair, wearing a white laboratory coats and parking a JCB digger outside your house for a few days. Then dim and flicker the lights in your house during the night and replace the JCB unseen, with a Tonka toy of the same description. Nissan Micra drivers. Attach a lighted sparkler to the roof of your car before starting a long journey. You drive the things like dodgem cars anyway, so it may as well look like one. Tape a chocolate bar to the outside of your microwave. If the chocolate melts you will know that the microwaves are escaping and it is time to have the oven serviced. A mousetrap, placed on top on of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep. Three copier salesmen go to London climb up the tower that houses Big Ben and decide to have a contest. They’re going to throw their watches off the top, run down the stairs and try to catch the watches before they hit the ground.
The first salesman throws his watch, takes three steps and hears his watch crash. The second throws his watch and takes only two steps when he hears his watch shatter. The third tosses his watch off the tower, jogs down the stairs, goes to a candy store, buys a snack, walks back to Big Ben and catches his watch. “How did you do that?” asks one of his friends. “My watch is 30 minutes slow.”
“That’s ridiculous,” said the salesman.” “I could lose the anaesthetic and it would cost £50” said the dentist.
“That’s still too expensive,” said the salesman.” The dentist replied, “Well one of my students can do it for a tenner”
Litho Len An old-fashioned litho printer and his son were visiting a new shopping mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, ‘What is this, Father?’ The father (having never seen a lift) responded, ‘Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don’t know what it is.’ While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous, voluptuous blonde woman stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son... ‘Go get your mother.’
Job Descriptions An accountant is someone who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing. An auditor is someone who arrives after the battle and bayonets all the wounded.
A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain. (Mark Twain) An economist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday didn’t happen today. A statistician is someone who is good with numbers but lacks the personality to be an accountant. A programmer is someone who solves a problem you didn’t know you had in a way you don’t understand. A topologist is a man who doesn’t know the difference between a coffee cup and a doughnut. A lawyer is a person who writes a 10,000 word document and calls it a ‘brief’. (Franz Kafka) A psychologist is a man who watches everyone else when a beautiful girl enters the room. A professor is one who talks in someone else’s sleep. A schoolteacher is a disillusioned woman who used to think she liked children. A consultant is someone who takes the watch off your wrist and tells you the time. A diplomat is someone who can tell you to go to hell in such a way that you will look forward to the trip.
Marketing A salesman for a local paper called on Cool Print in Colchester. “No way. I’ve been in business forty-one years and never spent a penny on advertising yet.” “Really? Then you can tell me, what is that handsome building on the top of the hill?” “That’s St Catherine’s church.” “Been there long?” “Over a hundred years.” “They still ring the bell, don’t they?”
Cold Spell This year has seen the coldest winter since records began for countries in the northern hemisphere. It’s been so cold that numerous copier salesmen have actually been seen with their hands in their own pockets. “Perfect,” said the salesman and added “can you book my wife in for next Tuesday?”
