Debenhams’ installs Xerox iGen 150 and Nuvera

XEROX has announced that Debenhams’ in-house print operation, Magenta Print and Display, has installed a Xerox iGen 150 and Nuvera 157 to achieve the volume and efficiencies required to meet the retailer’s print requirements. The in-house printing operation already produces the vast majority of in-store print for Debenhams and has now expanded its capability to include high speed and high quality label production. The combination of the iGen and Nuvera devices allows the operation to meet Debenhams’ volume and service requirements. It’s also able to provide an array of new products to its portfolio through a larger sheet size (364mm x 660mm) on the iGen 150 and high-quality finishing offered by both

products. With the addition of Xerox’s document creation software, PARIS, the team now also has the ability to automatically create and deliver personalised documents and better manage their digital printing processes. “When it came down to introducing new machines to our mix, Xerox’s product offering stood head and shoulders above the alternatives,” said Chris Tester, director of print operations at Debenhams. “The machines were up and running within a month, and we’ve already seen big benefits: more firepower, consistent quality and greatly reduced cost, to name a few.” The operation will produce more than 200 million product tags for use in all Debenhams’ stores

worldwide using the two Xerox machines alone. “By grouping our iGen 150 press with the Nuvera and PARIS software we were able to address a number of quality and speed issues in one,” said Darren Cassidy, managing director for Xerox UK. “Debenhams has put this diverse offering to excellent use, improving quality of output of print across the board.” With volume requirements continuing to increase, Debenhams expects to maintain a lasting relationship with Xerox, Chris Tester added. “The iGen has opened up a brand new capability for us and we would certainly consider installing additional Xerox devices in future should our volume demands require it.” www.xerox.co.uk

Stanford Marsh wins brace of HP Awards STANFORD Marsh has been named HP Designjet UK&I FY13 Market Share Contributor of the Year and HP Designjet UK&I FY13 Technical Partner of the Year. Matthew Perkins, Director of Stanford Marsh accepted the awards at a prestigious evening event held at RIBA in London earlier in the year. Established in 1965, Stanford Marsh provides wide format printing equipment, technical support and consumables to anyone with a wide format output need. The company has five offices throughout the UK, a headcount of 90 and an annual turnover of over £13.5 million. The company has been working with HP since 2000 and is delighted with its latest awards. Stanford Marsh has been awarded at least one HP Designjet category award every year for the last five years. Matthew Perkins explains, “In simple terms, the Market Share Contributor award confirms that we shipped more HP Designjet printers in terms of volume than any other UK vendor in 2013.” The Technical Partner of the Year award was given in recognition of Stanford Marsh having sold more Designjet T-series machines than any other vendor – from the entry level T520 through to the ‘work-horse’ Designjet T7100

production printer, the choice of many a copy shop owner. He continued, “We are delighted to have won these awards as they reflect the success of the Stanford Marsh business and our commitment to the HP product range. Following significant restructuring of HP’s dealer channel in 2013, we are now one of only five Designjet Production Printer specialists in the UK. He concludes, “We are also unique in the fact that we ship both the Designjet Z6200 and the new Z5400PS printers; we are extremely excited by HP’s Designjet roadmap for the upcoming years and intend to continue growing the HP channel apace.” For more information: www.stanfordmarsh.co.uk

Roland loyalty for Complete Sign Solutions CAMBERLEY based manufacturer and supplier of bespoke signage, Complete Sign Solutions, has completely transformed the production side of their business over the last 18 months following a sizeable investment of not one, but two Roland XR-640s. “The very first printer we bought was a 2nd user Roland, this was approximately 12 years ago, which paid for itself within just two months! - I’ve had a Roland ever since.” Alister, Complete Sign Solutions. In 2012 the company were looking, once again, to see how they could next adapt, and what technology might whet their appetite for the next step - enter Roland and the next generation of the SolJet. Back in September 2012, Roland announced the launch of its fastest and widest Roland SolJet to date; the Pro 4 XR-640. Not only did the Roland impress with speed but also with the introduction of the new Eco-Sol Max 2 inks, offered greater density, vibrancy and more colour accuracy than ever before. Complete Sign Solutions instantly recognised the user benefits along with the wall mural sized hole it could fill within their business. “We were looking at print technology that would allow us to not only fulfil wider print orders but also enable us to produce more wall art at higher quality.” Following a demonstration with Roland Authorised Dealer, printMAX, the printer sold itself. “The ability to print white, along with the consistency of colour was fantastic. We were able to produce some really high quality wall coverings at a much higher production rate than ever before!” – Alister. The roll feed take-up system also provided the company with the ability to leave it to print, whilst getting on to other jobs, a highly practical feature, where in a print room, the ability to multi-task is always a key factor. Alister continues “We had a latex which was a great printer, unfortunately the colour consistency and speed really let us down. Our latex took a good 30 minutes to turn on whereas our XR-640 could be switched on and was

ready to go! This lead the team to asking the question, ‘what printer is as good as our Roland SolJet?’ The simple answer being of course another XR!” “We soon realised that with another XR-640 our production times and consistency would be second to none, so we headed back to printMAX. The guys there have always been reliable and flexible so without question we headed back for a second machine.” 18 months down the line, Complete Sign Solutions are producing more wall art than ever before and are more than happy with their latest Roland investments. “We are extremely impressed with both the Roland XR-640s but also the service and response from printMAX. The printers have transformed our business and I can heartily recommend both the Roland XR-640 and printMAX to anyone looking to diversify.” – Alister, Complete Sign Solutions. www.signsolutions.co.uk, www.printmax.co.uk

St Austell Print expands with Epson Stylus Pro 9890 ST Austell Printing Company (SAPC) relocated to its brand new purpose built premises in St Austell Business Park in March 2013. This £6.2million flagship facility has been part funded by the ERDF Convergence programme and has provided the company with an opportunity to improve efficiency and build capacity in terms of its machinery, workflow and staffing. As part of St Austell Printing Company’s investment plan, the company has purchased an Epson Stylus Pro 9890 44” wide format printer from Epson reseller Stanford Marsh Group Graphics (SMGG). Since its installation in September 2013, St Austell Printing Company has been using the printer for all types of wide format applications across multiple indoor substrates. The company creates promotional materials for a wide range of clients including designers, conferencing companies, galleries and architects. Ian Dibb, Digital Print Manager at St Austell Print Company, comments, “We chose the Epson machine as it was able to deliver the high quality output we required at impressive speeds. The installation went well and we’ve had no issues whatsoever.” Designed to help the proofing and display graphics markets create accurate prints at high speed, the Epson Stylus Pro 9890 is able to achieve one of the highest colour gamuts on the market with consistently smooth colour

gradations. St Austell Printing Company is running the Stylus Pro machine with Epson’s eight colour UltraChrome K3 inks for enhanced dot quality, crisp, clear images and top quality results. Ian explains, “We believe that the Epson inks are the best ones to use to achieve the highest quality output. SMGG is able to supply us with these inks at a very competitive price which is a great benefit.” Prior to the installation of the Epson printer, St Austell Printing Company had also ordered a Canon Plotwave 360 machine from SMGG and was happy with its performance. Following a review of the company’s wide format print requirements going forward, the natural progression was to add the Epson Stylus Pro printer to the company’s stable of printers. SMGG is providing ‘next day’ technical support for the new Epson. Ian Dibb concludes, “SMGG has been incredibly helpful throughout the purchasing and installation process. We’ve had no issues at all and would recommend working with the company.” For more information on St Austell Printing Company, please visit www.sapc.co.uk; SMGG, please visit www.smgg.co.uk

We can now even offer variable data finishing, making every sheet unique through the motioncutter’s Namecut feature”. The motioncutter is a sheet fed laser system with a conveyor carrying the sheets under the laser head which cuts at up to 6 metres a second. It cuts, perforates and engraves all in one pass. It combines high quality, lots of flexibility, speed and impressive reliability with overall low cost of ownership in a very flexible mobile lab solution that can be used to print on-site at all sorts of events and for school photography with no compromise on print quality and media.” Enhancing the SureLab D700’s cost-effectiveness, are its long service intervals and low maintenance

requirements. A durable, long-lasting cutter blade reduces downtime and maintenance costs, boosting productivity and ensuring users can offer their customers a consistent and reliable service. Building on Epson’s success in professional photo printing, crisp and vivid image quality is assured by its proven Micro Piezo printhead technology. When

used in conjunction with Epson’s UltraChrome D6-S ink, the SureLab D700 boasts a wide colour gamut. The printed images are sharp and defined thanks to its high 1440dpi x 720dpi (max) resolution, variable sized ink droplets and precise droplet placement. The SureLab D700 is available from June 2014. www.epson.co.uk

Antalis and Rapidity launch Digital Café ANTALIS has partnered with Islington based digital printing company Rapidity to launch The Digital Café, a creative space where designers, marketing professionals and print buyers can find inspiration in the world of digital print and paper. Visitors to the new Digital Café can immerse themselves in the capabilities of digital print whilst being surrounded by a wealth of cutting edge substrates and creative papers to explore exciting new options for print-based marketing campaigns that will generate high quality response rates. Rapidity has constructed a dedicated space in its London headquarters, turning the area into a caféstyle area where visitors can fuel their imaginations in the world of paper and print to bring new dimensions to their campaigns. At the same time, they can seek expert advice and consultancy on the capabilities of digital print from the Rapidity team, as well as input from Antalis on its wide range of substrates. Complementing the Digital Café, a cartoonstyle book, entitled ‘The Book of Bang’ has been produced to provide visitors with a wealth of additional ideas and inspiration. Each page has been printed on a different substrate to clearly demonstrate the versatility of paper

which includes tactile and embossed surfaces as well as utilising a range of printing techniques and raised and specialist inks. The book has been printed on one of Rapidity’s two HP Indigo 7600 presses. To demonstrate the multisensory potential of high quality print and paper, Antalis will showcase its comprehensive range of creative, high impact substrates at the Digital Café. It will feature a selection from its Curious Collection, including SKIN, Metallics and Translucent, along with Conqueror, Rives, Keaykolour, Pop’set, Digigreen and the new Novatech Digital papers. The Digital Café will also feature a variety of speciality substrates, including Trucard, Invercote, Magnecote, Yupo, Indifilm and Idem digital. Commenting on the launch of The Digital Café,

Paul Manning, Managing Director of Rapidity said, “This will be a real place of inspiration for anyone interested in generating creative print-based marketing campaigns, where they can just drop in and see just what is possible using today’s cutting edge technologies and substrates.” He continued, “Our HP Indigo presses have opened up an even wider range of applications including the capability to cost-effectively print with white and raised inks and onto embossed and textured paper. And, by teaming up with Antalis, we can share the versatility and quality of a range of creative substrates to show just how the choice of paper can really maximise the impact and reaction to a piece of printed marketing collateral.” Natalie Thomas, Marketing Manager at Antalis UK added, “The Digital Café is a fantastic opportunity to show marketers, designers and print buyers just how eye-catching, tactile and impactful print and paper can be, particularly when combined with the most sophisticated digital printing technology.” www.antalis.co.uk, www.rapidity.com

Canon launch new imagePRESS C7000VPe CANON has launched the imagePRESS C7000VPe Factory Produced New Model (FPNM) digital colour press. This model is designed to help organisations take their first steps into digital print with a solution that offers high quality and performance for a low capital investment. The competitively priced printer is produced by collecting best-selling models from recent years from the market and disassembling these to the frame level at a Canon factory. Key moving parts are replaced, and all disassembled parts are then thoroughly cleaned and fully tested before the machine is rebuilt using a combination of existing and new parts, creating a new edition of the original model. A high proportion of existing components are reused, saving the need for new raw materials and minimising waste. The imagePRESS C7000VPe offers offset comparable image quality along with speeds of up to 71 A4 pages per minute. It also features extensive in-line finishing capabilities including brochures, perfect bound booklets and reports, giving businesses access to a wide range of applications and

opening up new potential revenue streams. The printer complies with the same high standards as all Canon solutions, giving customers proven performance, durability and reliability. Furthermore, because a large amount of the CO2 emissions over a product lifecycle are associated with raw materials in addition to product use, Canon’s FPNM range represents a reduction in CO2 emissions of nearly 80% according to lifecycle assessment simulations, resulting in a more sustainable print solution. Every imagePRESS C7000VPe printer undergoes the same quality assurance process as a newly manufactured device and Canon guarantees the same quality

and performance as the original machine. Commenting on the launch of the new portfolio, Mark Lawn, UK & European Marketing Director, Professional Print, Canon Europe said: “One of the main challenges facing organisations that want to move into digital print can be in securing the finance to make an initial investment. Canon aims to help businesses to grow and build a sustainable business model for the future. Canon’s Essential Business Builder Programme is an initiative to help organisations and in-house print departments to plan their approach to a digital printing business model, and the

imagePRESS C7000VPe is intended to help those same organisations with a solution that offers the high quality and performance that the market expects from Canon equipment, but for a lower capital investment than a brand new machine.” “The imagePRESS C7000VPe offers customers full peace of mind as it comes with the same high performance, durability and reliability of any other Canon product, along with the same warranty protection. It is also ideal for organisations seeking a more sustainable print solution.” For further information about Canon UK please visit www.canon.co.uk

VIVID’S THREE NEW MATRIX LAMINATORS

K

ONICA MINOLTA USED Ipex to demonstrate how its investments are helping the industry to adapt to the changing landscape for printed communications. The company used the show to help educate visitors through a packed seminar programme and continued to highlight the importance the company is putting on inkjet technology with further updates on KM1, its B2 digital inkjet press, which was at the show for the first time. Industry experts Neil Falconer (printfuture), Matthew Parker (print champion) and Charlotte Graham-Cumming (B2B marketer from creative agency Ice Blue Sky) were presenting every day in Konica Minolta’s business zone theatre. They showed how commercial printers should work as a community with the creative industry, building structured business plans that highlight new market opportunities through marketing automation services, and how you should stop selling on price. Konica Minolta used new workflow solutions that it has created to show how cost and complexity can be removed by demonstrating how multiple jobs can be managed from e-commerce through to production on its new digital colour press range (bizhub PRO/PRESS C1060/70). Elsewhere on the stand, live production systems were complemented by demonstrations and displays covering areas such as workflow, variable data printing, web-to-print and colour management, as well as marketing and crossmedia applications. In a new ‘green initiative’, details were unveiled of a certified Konica Minolta Production Printing Carbon Compensation project where customers buying systems at the show will be compensated for CO2 emission. Konica Minolta’s own stand, including the machines on display, were also ‘carbon neutral’. Konica Minolta’s growing portfolio had 12 systems running live at Ipex. They covered commercial production, packaging, wide format, document printing, corporate, on-demand publishing, direct

mail, labels and photo-printing markets. Among the highlights were the KM-1 B2 cut-sheet inkjet press, as well as the bizhub PRO and PRESS C1060 and C1070 systems, plus the bizhub PRESS 2250P mono system. Other attractions included a workflow automation area and other partner prepress and post-press solutions. Konica Minolta and its partners and customers also participated in the many visitor attractions at Ipex, including the World Print Summit. Olaf Lorenz, General Manager, International Marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe, chaired a debate, ‘Can Print Co-Exist with Digital Communications in the Future’, on 25 March had Andy Barber, General Manager, imail, UK Mail, Andy Fry, Managing Director of Nova Direct, and Charlotte Graham-Cumming, of Ice Blue Sky, as panelists. Customer case studies and presentations also featured in specific sessions for the Cross Media Show and Masterclasses at Ipex. Among the topics were variable data printing and web-to-print. Mr Lorenz said at the time: “We look forward to welcoming and supporting visitors on the Konica Minolta stand and demonstrating how our continued focus to develop the industry, through our investments, can help them enable their businesses to transform and adapt to the changing communications landscape. In addition to demonstrating our market leading production printing systems, solutions and software, we will help the industry to give shape to ideas by providing practical support, information and advice through our Digital 1234 business builder programme.” He added: “Konica Minolta is heavily committed to the print and print communication industry and Ipex will be another pivotal step forward as we continue to expand our customer and move into other areas.” For further information about the company, visit www.konicaminolta.eu.

VIVID Laminating Technologies launched three new roll film laminators at IPEX. The Leicestershire based designer and manufacturer of laminating systems has created pneumatic versions of their popular MX-370 and MX-530 models. Both the best selling MX-370 and MX-530 will continue to be available to purchase as standard systems, with the upgraded pneumatic versions now joining them in Vivid’s Matrix range. Their Technical Manager, Gavin Ward, explained, “The Pneumatic Matrix delivers much faster production times compared to our standard systems. They can run up to twice the speed, so printers can laminate their work even faster to get the job finished and back to the customer”. Vivid used their own Boss range of laminating films on trials of the Matrix. The extra pressure through pneumatic rollers also showed that certain digitally printed substrates can now be laminated using standard OPP film, rather than higher-priced digital OPP film, meaning that print finishing has also become even more costeffective. Gavin continued “We’ve really been putting the pneumatic versions through some rigorous tests over the past few months. Some substrates can be laminated up to 50% quicker on the new systems, so the cost and time savings for the end user is fantastic”. The third system launched at IPEX was the Duplex version of the MX-530. After successfully

18 | SHOWTIME | QUICK PRINT PRO | April 2014

debuting the working prototype at FESPA last June, the new double-sided laminator has also been enhanced to make use of the pneumatic benefits. Bruce Cozens, Vivid’s Product Manager, also highlighted that Vivid has decided to bring production of both the Pneumatic and Duplex options to Britain “There is a recent shift by some companies of ‘re-shoring’; bringing production back to their country, therefore shortening supply chains and lead times. We’ve created these three Matrix options to be modular and retrofit to existing models”. This will greatly benefit the end user, as delivery times on new Pneumatic systems will be shorter, and customers who want to upgrade their existing system can have a Pneumatic or Duplex version as a modular upgrade carried out on their premises. Bruce continued, “The Matrix is designed in Britain so re-shoring Pneumatic and Duplex production felt like the obvious choice. We’ve used the highest quality components in the systems, including Omron switches, Schneider electrics and British built Bambi compressors”. The decision to manufacture Pneumatic versions of the systems came from customer forums and feedback generated by both end users and their expanding network of distributors. The final Matrix in Vivid’s arsenal is a new version of their MX-700 B1 laminator. The system showcased at IPEX will launch in the summer. The 700 includes a built-in automated feeder and separator, capable of handling 1000 sheets at a time. Able to laminate SRA3, B1 and B2 print, the top of the range system is aimed at more industrial print finishers for bigger runs of both litho and digital jobs. Like its smaller brothers, the 700 is fully pneumatic and both the vacuum fed integrated feeder and pneumatics are powered by compressors by Japanese maker Orion. With a running speed of up to 20m a minute, Vivid are confident the Matrix 700 will develop a new market currently dominated by more expensive models. Bruce summarised “We launched the original Matrix just five years ago and we have taken the laminator to the No.1 spot in Europe. This is a really exciting time for us and we have continued to develop, enhance and add to the range, capturing new markets and increasing our overall market share”. The Matrix Laminating Systems are ideal for high quality lamination of business cards, menus, book covers, greetings cards and much more. The complete Pneumatic systems start at a recommended retail price of £9,400 for the MX-370. For more information visit www.vivid-online.com or call 0845 1 30 40 50.

Set up of the machine and switching applications only takes a few seconds via the easy to use control panel. Duplo also used the exhibition to unveil for the first time, the new fresher look and design of the completely revised IDEAL range of guillotines. One of the improvements is the new table height which ensures ergonomic working. Other new features include the operator-friendly blade activation system enabled by the two-stage EASYCUT control elements. Elsewhere on the stand was a display of finished products from the Mita range of lay-flat hardcover book production systems aimed at photobook specialists and commercial printers. From bookletmakers, multi-finishing devices to binding machines visitors to the Duplo stand, which the company shared with Multigraf and Ideal, experienced various product configurations in action and witnessed a multitude of real

customer applications. Tony Lock, group commercial director at Duplo International, said: “In today’s fiercely competitive print environment, offering product diversity is often the real differentiator. Our versatile products and solutions respond to the ever increasing demands from print buyers whilst ensuring the finishing arm of a print room runs as efficiently as possible. Designed with automated precision from the outset our new products help printers to diversify into new areas whilst maintaining a healthy profit.” Duplo also used Ipex to help educate visitors by participating in the World Print Summit and Masterclass seminars. www.duplouk.com

Offering a print area of 1600 x 2500mm wide, and 150mm in height, it provides printers and sign makers the opportunity to create the broadest range of POS displays, packaging prototypes, outdoor and indoor signage. Also showcasing on the Roland stand will be the VersaCAMM VS-i series, the latest addition to the world’s most popular printer/cutter range. Plus, this year the stand will also see the return of ‘The Beast’, Roland DG’s fastest printer - the SOLJET PRO4 XF-640 - which had a hugely successful UK debut at Sign & Digital UK in 2013. ‘The Beast’ will be in good company, sitting alongside its cousin, the SOLJET PRO4 XR-640, Roland DG’s flagship (and fastest) print and cut machine. Also on the stand will be the VersaART RE-640, Roland DG’s popular four colour 64 inch wide format inkjet printer. Companies visiting the show will have the opportunity to win an RE-640 in the Sign & Digital prize draw. Concludes Rob Goleniowski: “We invite all visitors to the show to come to the Roland DG stand and witness first-hand how our extensive technology portfolio – which I believe to be the most diverse and versatile in the industry - can truly change the way they do business and create a little magic for them and their customers.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

QPP Marketing Award Route 1 reaches the parts other trade printers cannot reach. Their refreshing marketing is complimented by a superb service and encouraging print promotions to our 6600 satellite front line print businesses.

C

ONGRATULATIONS TO CAPTAIN Jack and his trade print crew at www.route1print.co.uk for sharing some great ideas to promote print with a smile. This copy shop comedy award is in thanks for cheerfully offering to print our readers unprintables in both litho and digital. A QPP best practice has MARKETING AWARD been set in utilising the trade print services of Route1 trade printers have created some fun marketing with the added profit opportunity of offering quality products that can’t be produced in-house. Bonus yielding brochures and business cards just for a start.

An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman walk into a print shop... The first is John Cooper - a man of business and high expectations. He needs 500 business cards. Now John won’t accept anything less than 400gsm with Matt lamination. He also insists on Litho (he has no idea what ‘Litho’ is but he’s heard it’s good). John enters his local printers and asks for them. The Printer thinks to himself ‘I don’t have litho capabilities and I’m unsure my Xerox will appreciate 400gsm card - how will I laminate these?’. He contemplates turning John away, he’ll have to go to Vista Print - but suddenly recalls an advert in QPP for a trade specialists - Route One Print. He remembers their unusual advertising and that they sell Litho Business Cards , Matt Laminated for just £18 including VAT and Delivery. Even better though - they print business cards on a 450gsm silk. The Printer also knows that he can sell these on for £32. Now let’s tell you about Hamish Buchanan. During a teary evening in the kitchen, Hamish had a eureka moment and Onion Goggles were born. Now ready to take his product to market via a few trade shows, he requires flyers to hand out to potential distributors. The Printer sells Hamish some. Turning to leave, something catches Hamish’s eye. A Pop-Up banner with the words ‘1 banner, thousands of potential customers’. Hamish turns back to the Printer “How much?” he enquires. “£90” the printer replies. “It’s a deal!” Hamish pronounces exuberantly as the Printer’s eyes light up (he will outsource the banner with Route One Print for a mere £30 inc. VAT and Delivery). Hamish is now fully armed for his assault on the food preparation gadgets market. Finally let’s talk about Cormac Murphy. He needs some programmes for his theatre production. Cormac asks for 500 12pp A5 booklets printed on something with a bit of sheen, but not a full gloss (this isn’t OK Magazine). As Cormac is rather picky it will need to be high quality. The Printer thinks about the time it would take to pull off a job like this - time he could be spending marketing his business further. At that point he remembered Route One Print installed a Horizon Stitchliner (complete with a 3-knife trim for slick finishing) and offered them for £147 including delivery. He sells this to Cormac for £300. The Printer smiles, he can now focus on other jobs now without the monopolisation of his own machines... We may have made these stories up and paid for them to be sent to your inbox, however, we’re hoping that won’t stop you from checking us out. If we go to this much effort to make up stories to advertise to you, you can only begin to imagine what goes on in our factory. Turn fiction into reality with just three of our great prices below.

Comedy in copy shops, whatever next... look out for more in the series of these head turning adverts. In recognition of a trade service that really adds value to the quick print part of the industry we are pleased to announce that the recipients of the first ever QPP marketing best practice award are Jack Wilmott and all the merry marketing team at Route1 print. You are all cordially invited to join in www.route1print.co.uk

Picture Perfect Printing Martin Christie goes back to some basics this month, as he is very aware that, apart from his regular followers, there are a number browsing these pages for the first time and wondering if there is anything relevant to them in the workplace. Hopefully the answer is yes.

T

HE IDEA OF this column is, and always has been, to try and make some sort of sense of an increasingly complex working environment, where both the input and the output raise issues that change almost on a daily basis. In this cause I often take a few liberties with actual technical accuracy of my descriptions, which might raise a few eyebrows from the IT experts, but is in the interests of making those issues understandable to mere mortals. The column is headlined as digital imaging, but as we are no longer simply word processors, almost everything we handle involves some sort of image, whether artwork or photograph, so the complexities reach into almost every job that comes in. Most significantly, customers now expect a higher degree of accuracy in colour and detail reproduction than was ever possible years before, and as the print processors and machines are capable of producing it, there is no reason why the expectations can’t be matched. No reason, unless there is a conflict between the input and the output, and that’s where the essential task of problem solving comes in, and why choosing the right tools in terms of software, is vital. Unless you are in the fortunate position to be able to skip all your old computers and invest in completely new kit, like most print shops you are probably juggling with a variety of machines of various ages, with software to match, and the dilemma is which to use or which to update. One of the advantages of Adobe’s somewhat contentious move to put all their software on subscription, rather than one-off purchase, is that it allows a business, with many work stations to serve, to pick and mix individual parts of the new Creative Suite as needed, and drop those that may be surplus to requirements. So a good look at what you actually need, and can possibly use, is a very useful exercise. It’s surely a little wasteful to have a computer fitted out with all the expensive whistles

and bells, if it’s just going to be used to open email and print basic file types. My suggestion is that design programmes, like Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, while they are needed in a fully operational bureau, do not have to be on every computer, and that other options like Acrobat Professional, Photoshop itself and Lightroom, are often ignored or under used. They can be rented separately from Adobe as part of their packages. This option is more than cost effective, as it also addresses the continuing problem of identifying potential problems in print files before they are sent to the printer. These potential problems are becoming more common with PDF files, as rather than solid, flattened images, they can contain layers and other editable material that can cause postscript errors. The PDF has become a common file that everyone can read, but it doesn’t mean that everyone can be printed. So why not think out of the box and avoid the issues by advising customers to use a solid image file, like the JPG, or better a TIFF? Traditionally we avoided JPGs because often they were too small or highly compressed to enlarge, but now digital cameras, and even phones are taking pretty big images, so a print of reasonable size is possible. A JPG is completely flattened so can’t contain any floating text or layers. A TIFF can contain layers, but is simple to save, and the end result with both file types is a pixel based image that can be easily read and managed by photo editing software. Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop Bridge are really useful here. Another reason to use them is the massive memory capacity of the popular memory sticks, let alone hard drives, that are likely to be presented over the counter. It’s increasingly rare for someone to select just the files needed to print, and more common to have to sift through a person’s recent life story to

find the items required. Even then there may be several versions, often with similar titles, and possibly different specifications. All of this is a recipe for potential mistakes, and certainly wasted time that is not easily accounted for. The priority for efficient workflow is to quickly identify the files required, check their suitability for printing, and separate them from the rest of the unnecessary baggage. I include the last task in the list because it’s not unusual for a customer to ask for another copy, or an individual print, after the job has been despatched, and effectively signed off. There’s nothing more frustrating than starting the search all over again, especially if there is a chance the wrong file may be selected by mistake. Using Bridge or Lightroom you can display accurate thumbnails of all files in a folder along with all the information you need on pixel count, colour space, and physical size, as well as data on origination that can be really useful when sorting different versions of the same thing which even the customer may not be able to do. In previous versions of Bridge you could combine selected files in output to create a multi-page PDF for print if that is more convenient. In Creative Suite this function has now been put back in Photoshop itself, but as a bonus, and as a result of howls of protest from photographers, Adobe has brought back the contact sheet which can do something similar. Lightroom was introduced specifically for digital photographers, and as such may have passed print shops by. But it is a really useful, and quite inexpensive option. It only deals with pixel-based files, and only in RGB, and doesn’t have layers. But as most customers are actually working in RGB these days, on smart phones or tablets, rather than creating CMYK separations for print, the simplicity can be an advantage. Although Lightroom is pixel-based, it is not pixel dependant like Photoshop in the sense that different files can be laid up to print dictated by their dimensions, not their individual resolution. In Photoshop, you may have learned the hard way that if you import images of even slightly different resolutions into a page the size will be dictated by that of the original canvas – so output dimensions may vary. A good working example recently was a load of scans of old postcards – over sixty in number – done at different times, on different scan settings, to be printed two up on A4 in greyscale. So you had a complete mismatch of colour hue, shape and resolution. Importing them into Lightroom it took less than minutes to sort out colour, synchronise tone, switch orientation, and layup accurately into a template for printing. Lightroom is non-destructive software, meaning that any editing for print will not affect the original files, and the template can be saved to be printed again, or to print selected items. The edited files can be exported to a customer folder from where they can be retrieved for further printing, rather than starting all over again, or kept in a current collection where minor or major corrections can be made to the edit. Printer settings can similarly be saved on particular jobs so you don’t have to start talking to the printer dialogue box all over again. Time saving is important on these sort of jobs where time sending to print is not really chargeable, but it also means that other jobs which may look daunting at first glance, may actually be relatively straightforward. Once again the theme is being able to do things the customer can’t do easily, so you can give them the option of doing it themselves in their own time and at their expense, or paying extra for a professional service.

ANYTHING NEW AT THE NEW PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW? MARCH saw the launch of the new Photography Show at the NEC, Future Exhibition’s replacement to the previous long running Focus. It didn’t really look a lot different to the old show to be honest which is probably not surprising given almost identical exhibitors and stand construction.

vivid-online.com

British Design

It even drew pretty well the same number of visitors – thirty thousand over the four days – being a mixture of the professional and the enthusiastic amateur. Future aims to take it more aggressively into the wider consumer market, while retaining the important flagship camera manufacturers, so it may develop with the market place, especially as Apple is now apparently the leading brand worldwide. This year at the NEC, however, there were still plenty of long lenses and tripods in evidence, so it will be a while before the man with a camera is replaced by the geek with smart glasses. And as much as technology was on show, there was a healthy amount of practical hands on stuff like mounting and framing to underline that the printed image still has pride of place, and it will always need that little extra touch to be complete. Finishing has always been an important addition to the print shop, and it’s reassuring to see it will continue to be, as something substantial on the wall will always be more satisfying than passing round a phone pic. There were of course some new cameras, with more pixels and add on gadgets, but nothing revolutionary. Even amusing roving robots with digital eyes aren’t a novelty anymore. More interesting to the digital print shop are developments in the dry lab market – the one that used to be the high street photographic outlet. Epson slipped in a new mini dry lab, with two more even smaller on the way in the summer. These all use inkjet printers embedded in the box but are capable of handling sheet and roll at the same time. The old monster wet labs have become dinosaurs as the film market has shrunk, so the new generation has downsized, and regrouped to the point it is well worthwhile some copy shops looking at volume photographic printing from these machines. Because they have a smaller footprint and no plumbing, they are practical, and use technology the digital bureau will be familiar with. If you have customers asking where they can get photographic prints done, it doesn’t make sense to be sending them down the road. More snippits from the photography show next month.

Cartacrusca: Barilla Bran Paper BROUGHT together by a keen sense of social and environmental responsibility, Favini, the innovative Italian paper manufacturer, and Barilla, one of Italy’s largest players in the food industry, have created Cartacrusca (Italian for ‘paper from bran’), the first paper to be made from bran residues that can no longer be used for human consumption. On the back of its experience with Crush, the unique range of ecological papers made from agro-industrial waste, Favini proved an ideal partner for Barilla, which has been looking for ways to make better use of its by products, and bran in particular. The research and development teams of both Barilla and Favini worked side by side to select the most suitable by product and to then purify and mill the bran to make it work with paper fibre. The result is Cartacrusca. Instead of being wasted, the bran residues are given a new life as paper throughout Barilla. Cartacrusca contains 17% of bran residues, replacing cellulose and filler materials to produce high-quality paper which is used for all corporate communications. The colour of Cartacrusca Barilla is taken from the bran which also features as dots throughout the paper, giving it a really authentic feel. Two grammages have been supplied - 250g, which is ideal for cards book covers, shopping bags and similar applications; and 100g for notebooks papers, letterhead and print publications. www.favini.com

Arjowiggins Graphic Celebrates Five Years of Landmark Environmental Savings TO celebrate its fifth anniversary Arjowiggins Graphic has become the first ever paper manufacturer to calculate the environmental savings of using recycled papers in the UK over the past five years. The first statistics of their kind calculate how much landfill, carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases, water, energy and wood have been saved by Arjowiggins Graphic UK customers using recycled paper, as opposed to 220,228,066kg of paper saved by recycling paper produced from virgin fibres. insted of heading to landfill The results underline the significant environmental benefits of using recycled papers: • 220,228,066kg of landfill – the same weight as 26,217,627 household rubbish bins • 27,643,943kg of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases – enough CO2 to fill 2,764,394,300 party balloons • 3,834,909,800 litres of water – the equivalent of 1,534 Olympic swimming pools • 410,447,710KWh of energy – enough energy saved to power 124,378 households for a year • 325,530,055kg of wood – the same weight as 474,534 Mini Coopers With enough landfill saved to fill over 26 million rubbish bins and enough energy to power the average home for over 124,000 years, these results are a proud achievement for the leading European recycled paper manufacturer. These statistics are based on the recycled paper manufactured by the company and distributed in the UK over five years, using Arjowiggins Graphic’s unique Eco Calculator. The Eco Calculator works out how much an individual, company, or printer has saved for any given print job (brochure, report, direct mail etc.) by using Arjowiggins Graphic recycled paper as opposed to paper produced from virgin fibres. This can then be taken a step further by showing the environmental savings on a specific print job, not only demonstrating a company’s environmental commitment but also enabling everyone to truly understand the benefits of using recycled paper. The Eco Calculator is just one of the company’s achievements over the past five years, as Arjowiggins Graphic has firmly established itself as a leading provider of environmental paper solutions and now offers the largest range of recycled papers on the European market. Key achievements include: • Introducing the first 100% recycled range of Inkjet papers: Cocoon Jet, Cocoon Jet Silk, Cocoon Jet Pro and Cocoon Jet Premium • Introducing the first 100% recycled, FSC® certified recycledd label brand for the packaging market: Maine 1 Face Natural • Being selected as one of the top 25 pulp and paper manufacturers to show leadership in transparency by the WWF Environmental Paper Company Index 2013 • Increasing the share of fibres used from FSC® certified forests to 84% • Diverting waste from landfill in the UK by sourcing (in the region of) 20% of the waste paper used to manufacture recycled paper • Joining the WWF climate savers programme and setting ambitious targets to reduce CO2 emissions • Successfully implemented ISO 5001 certified energy management system for all manufacturing sites (the international standard recognising businesses that are demonstrating best in practice in energy management whilst following a programme for continuous improvement) www.arjowigginsgraphic.com

Smart Labels – Smart Packaging

SMART product labeling and packaging is extremely important and plays a significant role in the consumer’s purchasing decision. Manufacturers of almost any type of product often find themselves in need of short to medium run, full-colour customised product labels. The reasons are many: for use on prototype products, promotional campaigns, and perhaps most often, because the manufacturer has many different products that are all produced in smaller quantities. In all of these cases, the printed quality and appearance of these labels is extremely important. Providing a professional appearance on packages can easily make the difference between a product selling well or simply sitting on the retail shelf. Putting the most professional colour labels possible on products will set them apart from others. This is especially important for smaller manufacturers who can actually increase their sales by making their products stand out through innovative packaging and labeling. It also allows manufacturers of all sizes to offer private label goods in smaller quantities. Primera Technology, a manufacturer of specialty colour printers widely known for its inkjet-based label printers, has successfully developed short to medium run solutions using colour laser technology, such as the CX1000e Color Label Printer, a roll-to-roll dry toner-based laser printer. Designed for inhouse production of professional-quality product labels, CX1000e is ideal for producing short to medium run jobs in various sizes. It’s the first laser printer to print on pre-die cut label stock. With 2400 dpi print resolution and print speed of five metres per minute, CX1000e delivers professional full colour print quality along with high speed production. CX1000e output has much deeper and far more vibrant colours. Dot patterns are virtually imperceptible. And for the most precise colour control, Pantone-approved spot colour support is included. www.primeralabel.eu

INTERNATIONAL PRINT DAY – Invitation REPRESENTATIVES from International Print Inc. in the US, UK, Canada and Australia announce the launch of the new website and opening of registration for International Print Day 14: A 24-Hour Global Virtual Conference on October 8, 2014. The International Print Day initiative began through social media during October 2013 in response to the desire of the global print community to have one conference that everyone could attend, no matter where they live.

The content for this conference is being developed for the community by the community, with the mission to provide attendees access to relevant and topical information and education, and to enable smaller companies the ability to share their products and services alongside the big players on a global scale. “To the International Trade Shows and Industry Organisations out there -- we need your support and want to include you in the conference at the top level,” said one of the conference organisers, Deborah Corn. “Too often the word “competition” gets in the way of open knowledge sharing. We are hoping that for one day a year we can all get together and help each other for the bigger picture of print, the community and the industry.” For more information on International Print Day 2014, and to register for the conference, please visit: www.internationalprintday.org.

Is printing the hidden casualty of BYOD? NO — mobile apps and web-enabled devices are enabling the printer industry to fight back against the bring your own device says Rob Brown of Oki Systems UK The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) phenomenon has swept over businesses large and small like a tidal wave. According to Microsoft, 67% now use personal smartphones or tablets at work. Also, 42% of companies now have a BYOD policy, which addresses the security and financial issues surrounding their use for business purposes. But whether we are talking BYOD or not, in many jobs, smartphones and tablets are becoming more prevalent than laptops and PCs. Analyst firm IDC even predicts that tablets will outsell laptops this year. This isn’t surprising – we’ve all grown to love our smartphones and tablets. However, they do have some major drawbacks. So how does this affect printing demands? Imagine someone working for a company with a BYOD policy. They can quite happily work on their iPad or tablet, especially when visiting clients. But they are on their way to a meeting and want to print off a hard copy of their presentation, proposal or even artwork concepts to make a more dramatic impression at the meeting. Or they only have their phone with them and, their eyesight not being as good as it could be, they can’t quite read the figures on a spreadsheet their colleagues have just emailed. It would be good to have a hard copy so they can see the full story of those figures, but only authorised devices are allowed to log-on to their client’s networked printers. It’s only then that they realise that printing has become a victim of the mobile revolution. Businesses have got so used to working digitally, but there are still many occasions when only a hard copy will do. In many ways, rumours of the death of printing have been exaggerated; in a survey carried out by Oki Systems UK last year, 92% of those polled said that they still print documents every day, with 45% printing more than 10 pages daily. The same survey also highlighted how employees are now also expecting to be able to connect to printers from their own smartphones and tablets. Of the 24% of respondents who brought their own phones and tablets into the office, a substantial 45% print from these devices from the office printer. There’s certainly an opportunity here for printing businesses prepared to invest in new models with wireless or web connectivity. But the device and these printers still need to find one another via a mobile app. OKI has just announced that a selection of its multifunctional colour printers is now Google Cloud Print-ready. This means that users can wirelessly print documents to cloud-connected printers from any mobile phone, laptop, tablet, PC or other web-connected device.

They can also connect to traditional printers that are plugged into a Windows, Mac or Linux computer with internet access using the Google Cloud Print connector in Google Chrome. At the moment, Google Cloud Print integrates with Chrome, Gmail for mobile and Google Docs for mobile and can also print to third-party native mobile apps on Android and iOS platforms. iPhone, iPad or iPod users can also take advantage of Apple’s AirPrint as it is embedded natively in these devices. This means that instead of having to transfer a document to the app itself, users can print directly from wherever the document or image is stored. Icons within the device will inform them whether there are any AirPrint-enabled printers in the vicinity. AirPrint is supported by devices from several leading printer manufacturers, including OKI. Other apps which enable mobile printing from non-Apple devices include Cortado Workplace and E-print which enables printing via a website which will find nearby wireless printers. So not only will mobile printing further encourage the take up of mobile devices, it may also impact on the printing market too. As, at the moment, these apps can be downloaded directly from mobile devices and are either free or inexpensive, they don’t represent any business potential in themselves. However, if print shops are replacing outdated printers it will be well worth choosing wireless and web-enabled models. These apps also make multifunctional printers even more valuable and useful. For example, many tablet computers are still not ideal for using Microsoft Word, or for storing Word documents. But in some sectors, such as education where iPads and other tablets are beginning to be used extensively, teachers and others are storing their documents in the cloud or central server. They then use the appropriate mobile app and their tablet to access the document and trigger its printing. OKI has recently seen a surprising number of requests from schools and other educational establishments for A4 colour and mono multifunctional printers which are all mobile-enabled. Printing businesses which focus on the design and creative markets where iPads, for example, are used extensively could find similar business by investing in these new models. As remote working continues to become the norm, it seems certain that mobile printing will gain in popularity. To meet this demand, many printer vendors will be expanding their range of compatible printers over the next months and years. This opens up a window for the more flexible printing firms to respond to changes and adjust their business model to enable customers to print from mobile and tablets, even as passing trade. It will take some creative thinking to decide how it can work for each individual business, but there’s no doubt that there could be rewards for those prepared to evolve with the market. Printing may have suffered following BYOD – but it looks as though its recovery could be imminent. www.oki.co.uk/cloud-printing

BORDER INCIDENT There was this really smart sheep down in South Wales who knew how to make butter and buttermilk. One night she sneaked across the border and got a job working for an English farmer, who set up a roadside stand and told her to try to sell the stuff. Unfortunately traffic was very heavy and the sight of this sheep making butter and buttermilk was so distracting that naturally there was an accident. The police investigated and issued the farmer a citation for attempting to make an illegal ewe churn on a busy highway.

KNIGHT OUT Lady Guinevere and Sir Lancelot have a big argument and Guinevere tells Lancelot she never wants to see him again. Lancelot is so depressed he goes down to the local tavern to drown his misery by drinking some ale. Guinevere realises the argument was silly and decides to find Lancelot and apologise. She sees his horse outside the tavern and goes in. A local man who is just leaving, recognises Guinevere, and says to her: “What’s a knight’s girl like you doing in a place like this?”

WEST RIDING I had a dream the other night. I was in the old West riding in a stagecoach. Suddenly, a man riding a horse pulls up to the left side of the stagecoach, and a riderless horse pulls up on the right. The man leans down, pulls open the door, and jumps off his horse into the stagecoach. Then he opens the other door and jumps onto the other horse. Just before he rode off, I yelled out, “What was all that about?” He replied, “Nothing. It’s just a stage I’m going through.”

FEELING GUILTY “A young, inexperienced bank robber gets caught during his first stick-’em-up and ends up in court. Crucial evidence—including CCTV recordings from the bank lobby— has gone missing. After weeks of deliberation, cross-examinings, conflicting witness statements, a hung jury and a huge deal of frustration, the young man is found not guilty. As the foreman states the verdict, the rather lucky defendant pipes up, ‘Does that mean I can keep the money?’ ”

THE FINAL WORD ON NUTRITION After an exhaustive review of the research literature, there’s the final word on nutrition and health. 1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 3. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 5. Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 6. The French eat foie gras, full fat cheese and drink red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

MORE PUNS IN PRINT I did a theatrical performance about puns. Really it was just a play on words. To write with a broken pencil is pointless. Atheists don’t solve exponential equations because they don’t believe in higher powers. A copier salesman drove his expensive car into a tree and found out how the Mercedes bends. A new type of broom came out, it is sweeping the nation. A small boy swallowed some coins and was taken to a hospital. When his grandmother telephoned to ask how he was a nurse said ‘No change yet’. Don’t trust people that do acupuncture, they’re back stabbers. There was once a cross-eyed teacher who couldn’t control his pupils. A prisoner’s favourite punctuation mark is the period. It marks the end of his sentence. The shoemaker did not deny his apprentice anything he needed. He gave his awl. The man who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran. A hole has been found in the nudist camp wall. The police are looking into it. The one who invented the doorknocker got a No-bell prize. A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it is two-tired.

ANNOYING, OR WHAT? A duck walks into a bar, and asks the bartender, “do you have any grapes?” “Nope” responded the bartender, “try somewhere else.” The duck walks out and back in, “do you sell grapes?” “I told you already I don’t” responded the bartender, “stop bothering me.” The duck walks back out and then back in again, “stop right where you are” the bartender screams “you ask me again if I have grapes I will take a hammer and nail your feet to the floor.” The duck walks out and then back in again, “do you sell nails?” he asks “No” responded the bartender.” “Do you sell grapes????”

INSIDER INFO A man goes to the police station wanting to speak to the burglar who broke into his house the night before. ‘You’ll get your chance in court,’ says the desk sergeant. ‘No, no, no! says the man. ‘I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I’ve been trying to do that for years!’

GROWN UP SALES TRAINING You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say, “I am a very rich salesman. Marry me!” That’s Direct Marketing! You’re at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl. One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you and says, “He’s a very rich salesman. Marry him.” That’s Advertising! You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and get her telephone number. The next day you call and say, “Hi, I’m a very rich salesman. Marry me.” That’s Telemarketing! You’re at a party and see a gorgeous girl. You get up and straighten your tie; you walk up to her and pour her a drink. You open the door for her; pick up her bag after she drops it, offer her a ride, and then say, “By the way, I’m a very rich salesman. Will you marry me?” That’s Public Relations! You’re at a party and see a gorgeous girl. She walks up to you and says, “You are a very smart salesman.” That’s Brand Recognition! You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say, “I’m a great salesman. Marry me” She gives you a nice hard slap on your face. That’s Customer Feedback!

BAD CHANGE A salesman takes his place in the theatre, but his seat is too far from the stage. He whispers to the usher, “This is a mystery, and I have to watch a mystery close up. Get me a better seat, and I’ll give you a handsome tip.” The usher moves him into the second row, and the man hands the usher a pound coin. The usher looks at the tip, leans over and whispers, “The wife did it.”

HONESTY BID Selling at an auction was halted when the auctioneer announced, “Someone in the room has lost his wallet containing £2,000. He is offering a reward of £500 for its immediate return.” After a moment of silence, there was a call from the back of the room, “£550”

SALES INCENTIVE A salesman is driving down a country road, when he spots his sales manager standing in the middle of a huge field of grass. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and notices that his manager is just standing there, doing nothing, looking at nothing. The salesman gets out of the car, walks all the way out to his sales manager and asks him, “Ah excuse me sir, but what are you doing? “The sales manager replies, “I’m trying to win a new business prize. “How?” asks the salesman, puzzled? “Well, I heard they give a new business management prize to people who are out standing in their field.”

VET BILL REVENGE A salesman takes his hamster to a vet he had sold a copier to, and after a short look at the creature the vet pronounces it dead. Not happy with the vet’s diagnosis the salesman asks for a second opinion. The vet gives a whistle and in strolls a Labrador dog. The dog nudges the hamster around with its nose and sniffs it a couple of times before shaking his head. “There” says the vet,” Your hamster is dead”. Still not happy the salesman asks for a third opinion. The vet opens the back door and in bounds a cat. The cat jumps onto the table and looks the hamster up and down for a few minutes before looking up and shaking it’s head. “It’s definitely dead sir”, says the vet. Convinced, the salesman enquires how much he owes. “That will be £1000, please”. “A £1000 just to tell me my hamster is dead” fumes the rep. “Well”, says the vet, “There’s my diagnosis, the lab report and the cat scan”.

ARE YOU OWED MONEY? One day, a man from the Czech Republic came to visit his friend in New York. When asked what he wanted to see, the visitor replied, “I would like to see one of the zoos in America.” To his delight, the New Yorker took him to the Bronx Zoo. They were touring the zoo, and standing in front of the gorilla cage, when one of the gorillas busted out of the cage and swallowed the Czech whole. Shocked, his friend from New York quickly called over the zoo keeper. He quickly explained the situation and the zoo keeper immediately took steps to save the man’s friend. The zoo keeper got an axe and asked the man, “OK, which gorilla did it? Was it the male or the female?” The New Yorker pointed out the female as the culprit. Quickly, the zoo keeper split the female gorilla open and found nothing of the Czech. He looked at the man from New York, who shrugged and said, “Guess the Czech is in the male.”

THE OLD MAN STATEMENT You know that he refused to wear shoes so his feet became hard and tough, right? You know that he went for long periods fasting and refused to eat meat, even when he wasn’t fasting, right? And you know that both the fasting and his diet gave him extremely bad breath, right? And that he was of lean, slight build, especially in his later years? So he was a super callous fragile mystic plagued with halitosis.

OH, YES, YES A linguistics professor was lecturing to his class one day. “In English,” he said, “a double negative forms a positive. In some languages though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However,” he pointed out, “there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative.” A voice from the back of the room piped up “Yeah, right.”

A couple of clams were eating chocolate bars while two fish watched.

FROG AT THE BANK A frog is outgrowing his lily pad and decides to make some home improvements. He doesn’t have the money, so he hops to the bank to borrow some. At the bank, he takes a seat at loan officer Patricia Black’s desk and explains his dilemma. “I want to upgrade my lily pad, maybe add another window, but I don’t have the cash. Can you lend me the money?” “Maybe. What can you offer as collateral?” “Well,” says the frog. “All I have is this paperweight. You shake it up, and it snows on the little village. Cute, huh?” “Hmm . . . I’ll have to speak to my manager.” She enters her manager’s office. “Mr. Bitterby, I’ve got a frog at my desk who wants to borrow money for lily pad improvements. But all he can offer for collateral is this glass paperweight.” Mr. Bitterby takes the paperweight, hefts it in his hand, looks at her and says, “It’s a Knickknack, Patty Black, give the frog a loan.”

CAN’T FORGET THAT An elephant and a crocodile were swimming in the Amazon, when the elephant spots a turtle sunning himself on a rock. The elephant walks over to the turtle, picks him up in his trunk and hurls him far into the jungle. “What did you do that for?” asks the crocodile. The elephant answers, “That turtle was the one that bit me almost fifty years ago.” The crocodile says, “And you remembered him after all these years? Boy, you sure do have a good memory.” “Yep,” says the elephant. “Turtle recall.”

“Did you see that?” one fish said, as the clams finished their treat.

TOW TRUCK NEEDED A guy was coming home from work in the city, driving country roads to get home. He looks in his rear view mirror and sees an ambulance. He pulls over and as the ambulance passes, sees the the back door is open a little. The ambulance goes over a bump and out falls an ice chest. The guy rushes over to the ice chest and opens it up. Inside is a human toe in the ice. He sees he can’t catch the ambulance so he gets in his car and rushes to the nearest petrol station to call 999. They tell him they will send a car right away but that all of their police cars are in use and to just wait 20 minutes. So he waits 20 minutes until the toe truck shows up.

NICE WORDS A man goes into a bar and orders a beer. He takes a sip of the beer and a small voice says “Nice Tie!”. The man looks around and doesn’t see anyone. A little puzzled he takes another sip, and again the voice says “Nice shirt too!”. Now the man calls the bartender back and complains that every time he takes a sip of beer he hears a small voice. The bartender says “Oh never mind that! That’s just the peanuts, they’re complimentary!

DEAR READERS SCRIBES… Given the reality of my generally recognised lack of maturity, I must confess that I frequently do enjoy children’s weekend programming. However, I would prefer it to be educational. Sometimes, I get fooled. This last weekend for instance, I was tempted to watch an animated feature about the Capital of the Sudan in Africa. Then, it came to me that it was just another Saturday morning Khartoum show.

“They didn’t offer us a single bite!”

WHICH ONE TO MARRY A young salesman was in love with two women and could not decide which of them to marry. Finally he went to a marriage counsellor. When asked to describe his two loves, he noted that one was a great poet and the other made delicious pancakes. “Oh” said the counsellor, “I see what the problem is. You can’t decide whether to marry for batter or verse.”

ASTRONOMY SALES FORECAST Two telescope salesmen were visiting a French observatory. One asks the other, “Comet Halley view?”

ONE SCARED PIG A mother pig was walking through the barnyard one day with one of her piglets. Suddenly, a raccoon raced out from behind the barn and scared the living daylights out of the mother pig. The little hog laughed to see such sport and the sow jumped over raccoon.

QUICK DECISION A sales lady was filling her tank at a petrol station, smoking a cigarette, even though all the signs say not to. The fumes that came out of the gas tank ignited, severely burning her hands. But it also lit up her arm, too! Instead of rolling on the ground to put it out, she panicked. She took off running down the street. A police car was at the crossroads where it happened and he tried to stop her to put out her arm, but she just kept running and screaming. All the officer could think of doing was to drive into her. This took everyone by surprise. The officer ran over to her and put the fire out, then called for an ambulance. When questioned about his course of action to stop her, the officer said, “My only thought was to stop her. After all, she was waving a firearm.” Thanks to all the readers for sending in their favourite puns in print, as usual the joke is on you.

“What do you expect?” asked the other fish. “They’re two shellfish.”

FELIX THE COPY CAT
