‘Two Sides’ to stop misleading “go green – go paperless” claims NEW research, commissioned by worldwide lobbying organisation ‘Two Sides’, has revealed that major global corporations are still using inaccurate and misleading environmental claims to encourage consumers to ‘go paperless’ and switch from paper-based to digital communication. This is despite legislation being introduced by the advertising standards authorities to protect the consumer from being misled. The recent survey, showed that in the UK, there is a significant proportion of financial service organisations, energy, gas and water suppliers and telecoms businesses that are still making false environmental claims. Similarly, research in the US shows a similar picture with half of the leading Fortune 500 companies in the same sectors doing the same. “This is extremely frustrating and unacceptable,” says Martyn Eustace, Chairman of the ‘Two Sides’ initiative. “The fact that marketers in some of the most high profile corporations in the world are still using unsubstantiated and misleading environmental claims to persuade consumers to switch from paper-based to cheaper electronic communication is outrageous. Many consumers still have a strong preference for paper but they are being manipulated by a lack of clear and accurate information, when in fact paper, based on a natural, renewable and recyclable resource, should be considered as a highly sustainable way to communicate.” He continues, “This behaviour must be tackled and we are therefore going on the offensive once again to educate and inform those responsible of their misconduct and to ensure that such organisations don’t continue to flout the law and mislead their most important asset…their customers.” Two Sides will be engaging with companies in Europe, the USA, Canada, South America, South Africa and Australia, who have either reneged on undertakings to stop using misleading environmental claims or are now again claiming that switching to online billing and communication is better for the environment without supplying verifiable supporting evidence. Original UK research completed in 2012 revealed that 70% of Telecoms businesses, 43% of the major banks and 30% of utility companies were all making inaccurate claims about the environmental benefits of switching from paper to digital communication. However, when challenged by ‘Two Sides’, 82% of these companies changed their marketing messages. In North America, Two Sides has also been successful in converting 30 of the Fortune 500 companies in the same sectors and is in discussion with a further 25 organisations who have yet to comply. Eustace continues, “Consumers should not be mislead and encouraged

Between 1st and 30th April, resellers will receive a discount of 10% when they buy up to 19 pallets of any Data Copy or LOGIC 300 products. Resellers buying 20 pallets or more will enjoy a 20% discount. The offer is only available at officepapershop.com.
to go ‘paperless’, when in fact it may be the sustainable way to communicate. It is just not acceptable to use misleading ‘green’ marketing to encourage customers to receive their bills or communications online, claiming that this is ‘better for the environment’. The majority of these claims are unsubstantiated and the term ‘paperless’ is also disingenuous as many consumers resort to home printing to ensure a permanent hard copy.” Two Sides maintains that the linkage made between switching from paper to electronic services and helping the environment not only creates a misleading impression about the sustainability of print and paper but, as these claims are also unsupported by facts, they contravene the latest UK CAP code, (Committee for Advertising Practice), flout guidelines by the US Federal Trade Commission and CSR Europe (the leading European business network for corporate social responsibility), and the UK Government department DEFRA. Phil Riebel, President of Two Sides North America, comments, “Over the past 12 months our campaign has successfully changed over 50% of the misleading marketing claims we have uncovered but there is so much more education to do because the majority of corporate marketers don’t understand the life-cycle and sustainable features of print and paper products — they are marketing based on perception instead of science-based facts.” Eustace emphasises that, “we are more than willing to engage in a meeting and provide these companies’ marketing and legal departments with all the facts about the sustainability of print media to help ensure that the messages they are sending out to the public and their customers are both factually and environmentally correct. Reporting to authorities is a move of last resort. In fact, we seldom have to do this and find that, working together with corporates is the best way to ensure that consumers remain protected from the increasing greenwash in our society. The true picture of the excellent environmental benefits of paper is being overlooked by these false messages. In Europe 44% of the land area is covered by forests and 93% of our paper comes from Europe where the area of forest has grown by 30% since 1950 and has been increasing at a rate of 1.5 million football pitches every year.” “In the US, the latest statistics from the US Department of Agriculture show that net forest land area has increased by 3% in the past 60 years, and wood volume on timberland (number of trees) has increased 58% during the same time period,” adds Riebel. Eustace concludes: “Paper is a renewable and recyclable product that, if responsibly produced and used, can be a sustainable way to communicate. The forest and paper industries rely on sustainable forests and they are major guardians of this precious and growing resource.” www.twosides.info

Adobe Photoshop Turns Twenty-Five ADOBE Photoshop, the imaging software that continues to redefine creativity in the digital age, turns 25. Photoshop touches virtually all the inspirational imagery that surrounds us: the high-impact logo on your morning cup of coffee; the new app you download on your iPhone; the sleek design of your running shoes; the Hollywood blockbuster that you’ll see tonight. Photoshop continues to blaze a trail, with amazing new features added with every release and new mobile apps that extend the power of Photoshop to iPhone, iPad and Android devices. “For 25 years, Photoshop has inspired artists and designers to craft images of stunning beauty and reality-bending creativity,” said Shantanu Narayen, Adobe president and chief executive officer. “From desktop publishing, to fashion photography, movie production, web site design, mobile app creation and now 3D Printing, Photoshop continues to redefine industries and creative possibilities. And today that Photoshop magic is available to millions of new users, thanks to Adobe Creative Cloud.” Photoshop is one of the most recognised software brands in the world, with tens of millions of users, and is the go-to application for digital image manipulation across all media: from print, to film, to the web. Photoshop features -- such as Layers, The Healing Brush, Content Aware Fill and Camera Raw -- have empowered designers to produce their best work. Photoshop technology is also at the heart of Adobe Lightroom, essential software for both professional and amateur photographers. And to meet the needs of today’s visual artists, Photoshop and Lightroom mobile apps enable creatives to work on image files seamlessly across desktop computers, tablets and smartphones. Photoshop’s success helped Adobe deliver the creative industry’s most comprehensive set of tools. No other company serves the creative industry with such a wide range of products and services. In addition to Photoshop, applications like Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Dreamweaver and others have pushed creativity forward, no matter what the media. And today Adobe Creative Cloud services, such as Behance and Creative Talent Search, are helping a new generation to find a global audience and market for their work.
The secret of Photoshop’s massive success has been its constantly evolving capabilities and an incredible pipeline of deep image science. This pipeline of innovation is now getting to customers faster than ever before, with Photoshop and Lightroom desktop and mobile apps constantly updated, as part of Adobe Creative Cloud. To celebrate this Photoshop milestone, Adobe is showcasing 25 of the most creative visual artists under 25 who use Photoshop. To be considered, artists upload their projects to Behance and use the tag “Ps25Under25.” In the coming months, those selected will take over the Photoshop Instagram handle (@Photoshop) for two weeks and present their work for the world to see. Fredy Santiago, a 24-year old Mexican-American artist and illustrator, based in Ventura, California will be the first to display his incredible work.. The company is also launching an advertising campaign, “Dream On”, on The Academy Awards — as a tribute to 25 years of amazing art created in Photoshop. The TV advertisement includes incredible work from Photoshop artists and iconic images from major motion pictures that used Photoshop in the making, including Avatar, Gone Girl, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Shrek.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN In 1987, Thomas Knoll developed a pixel imaging programme called Display. It was a simple program to showcase grayscale images on a black and white monitor. However, after collaborating with his brother, John Knoll, the two began adding features that made it possible to process digital image files. The programme eventually caught the attention of industry influencers, and in 1989, Adobe made the decision to license the software, naming it Photoshop, and shipping the first version in 1990. “Adobe thought we’d sell about 500 copies of Photoshop a month,” said Thomas Knoll, Adobe Fellow and Photoshop co-creator. “Not in my wildest dreams did we think creatives would embrace the product in the numbers and ways they have. It’s inspiring to see the beautiful images our customers create, the careers Photoshop has launched and the new uses people, all over the world, find for Photoshop every day.” www.adobe.com/uk
BPIF Apprentices launch campaign to schools LAST month the BPIF gathered together 11 print apprentices from member companies at their London offices. The task was to work with a designer to produce a piece of collateral in aid of National Apprenticeship Week to promote apprenticeships in the print industry to schools. With the current average age in the print industry at 48 the apprentices set to work designing a piece of collateral that they felt would attract young school leavers into print. The day was filled with debate and discussion, with many reasons emerging as to why each had chosen an apprenticeship. Daniel Pelly, Process Apprentice from De La Rue, described how he enjoys “getting paid to learn and meeting people he never would have done before”.
Liam Walton, Lithographic Printer, Galloways said an apprenticeship was the best option for him as it is “a great environment to learn in”, while Will Lee, Apprentice Printer, BCQ Group chose an apprenticeship to “develop new skills while being in a full time working environment”. Jonathan Taylor, Process Apprentice, De La Rue summed up that for him it was the “most viable option with the biggest payout at the end of it” and Sophie Chuter, PMS Printers, told how “I stumbled across a print apprenticeship, but now I love it”. The apprentices decided to produce a four page brochure with a theme of ‘the biggest industry you’ve never thought of....’, to highlight how print is used by everyone, everyday and also to engage the reader’s curiosity and make them turn the page.
Inside they included information on why the printing industry offers exciting job opportunities and why apprenticeships are a great route to a career. The apprentices decided on all aspects including paper, style and finishing. This brochure was then kindly printed by BCQ Group and mailed to 500+ schools across the UK. BPIF Programme Director, Ursula Daly, explained “It is so important that school leavers are given information about apprenticeships, it is the schools duty to allow students to make informed decisions and to do this they need to be aware of all of their options”. Chris Knowles, Managing Director BCQ Group, added a businesses point of view, saying “There is a huge value to having apprentices at BCQ,
they bring new fresh ideas into an established industry”. In addition to mailing the brochure to schools, the whole process was filmed and this will be emailed to MPs during National Apprenticeship Week to encourage their continued support of apprenticeships. To watch the video visit: www.britishprint.com/ NAS2015 Many Thanks go to; BCQ Group, Bishop Grosseteste University, De La Rue, Galloways, Hobbs, PMS Printers and The Sherwood Press for supporting this initiative. The BPIF are happy to make artwork available to any printer who would like to print copies of this brochure and distribute to local schools. Dual EFI VUTEk LED Printer for SuperWide TRADE-ONLY printer SuperWide Digital has invested in two VUTEk machines from EFI to increase production capacity and support its expansion into new sales areas. Having purchased a VUTEk GS3250LX Pro 3.2m wideformat flatbed and roll-fed LED-curing printer in March 2013, the company has benefitted so extensively that it has doubled up by buying a second unit: a VUTEk GS5500LXr Pro five-metre roll-to-roll LED-curing machine, which will now headline its super-wide format production. The second investment is a further demonstation of SuperWide’s confidence in EFI. The purchases are central to a phase of significant expansion at the Manchester based print house, which sells only to the trade and is reputed for its reliability, speed of turnaround and confidentiality. These were also the main reasons behind SuperWide’s decision to expand its relationship with EFI, following on from the success of its original investment in the VUTEk hybrid LED printer. The second iteration of this machine features a heavy-duty winder/unwinder to allow it to handle bulkier materials, such as the durable floor graphics SuperWide is now pioneering in the UK market. The SuperWide team first saw the five-metre, roll-to-roll VUTEk with UltraDrop Technology from EFI in November 2014 and realised immediately that it represented their next step for super-wide format production. The printer’s up-time and the flexibility of EFI’s 3M-cobranded SuperFlex UV ink combine with its 7-picolitre print-heads to provide the blend of performance and quality SuperWide requires, while low operating costs will improve profitability during its phase of investment and growth. “SuperWide prints a huge variety of display work for thousands of customers around the UK, and for many we provide the vital missing piece to make an order come together,” explains Luke Drogan, business development manager at SuperWide Digital. “There’s no fall-back for us, so we need to have the right equipment to meet our customers’ expectations, and their deadlines, time after time. The reliability of the two VUTEk machines and EFI’s accessible and supportive approach gave us the confidence that this was the right choice for SuperWide.”
“When you’re producing work for your customers’ customers, there’s very little margin for error,” adds Paul Cripps, general manager of EFI EMEA. “SuperWide’s decision to pick VUTEk twice is a vote of confidence from one of the UK’s largest print operations, and EFI will be there to support them every step of the way.” With a portfolio as varied as vehicle graphics, banners, graphic flooring, soft signage and digital wallpaper, SuperWide prides itself on producing highquality printed output that its clients can sell on as their own. Its services include design, artwork checking, print production and a full finishing and delivery service, plus installation. SuperWide believes that its dedication to providing a behind-the-scenes trade-only service is the reason behind its popularity with customers and continued success. www.efi.com

Diguru scores UK first with Linoprint
THE first Heidelberg Linoprint CV digital press in the UK is destined for Diguru in Chandler’s Ford near Southampton. It will be delivered this month, followed by a Polar 66 guillotine. Diguru, for which read digital gurus, currently runs two Xerox digital presses and a Presstek DI machine and the Linoprint will be an additional press. In just five years the company which supplies high quality commercial print to the agency and end user markets has grown its turnover from £400,000 to over £1m and it believes this investment will continue that growth. “The fact the Linoprint CV can produce a six page A4 or A4 landscape product is a big advantage and we are taking a five colour machine so have the option to add an opaque white or clear varnish coating which will be particularly attractive to our clients,” says managing director Richard Harwood. The Linoprint CV is a 90 page per minute machine which can handle stocks of 52 to 360gsm in sheet sizes of up to 330 x 70mm using the new banner sheet feeder. This technology uses a new improved toner with a smaller micron size and larger colour gamut. The press will be used to produce a wide range of products from business cards through to brochures and leaflet for customers that include

Ageas Insurance, GEO Amey and Mitie and a number of local authorities and colleges and universities. “The financial deal on this press was attractive and the Heidelberg reputation and industry knowledge, particularly on colour, was convincing,” says Mr Harwood. The company has a 50-50 split between litho and digital work. It also operates wide format technology and it plans to add 3-D printing in the future. Datagraphic Invests in Xerox’s Newest Inkjet DATA driven secure print and online document delivery specialist Datagraphic has invested in the Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press as part of a seven-figure investment in new print hardware and systems. Datagraphic is the first in the UK to acquire the new Xerox inkjet device, launched at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2015. “This press has come to the market at just the right time,” said Robert Hoon, managing director, Datagraphic. “We had been looking for a press with the capacity and footprint to support increasing document volumes. With this investment we will streamline production processes and improve efficiency to deliver on the increased demand we’re seeing for hybrid mail and data driven documents in our multi-channel services.” The Rialto 900 offers first-of-its kind features and carves out a new space within the booming production colour inkjet segment. Xerox introduce metallic speciality dry inks PRINTERS can create and produce more profitable jobs with guaranteed image accuracy and vibrant colours with Xerox’s newest digital colour devices – the Versant 80 Press and the Colour 800i/1000i Presses. For print for pay and in-plants, the Versant 80 combines new features and functionality to produce high-end applications faster on more media types. The Colour 800i/1000i Presses now offer true Pantone metallic gold or silver speciality dry inks – giving printers a creative, competitive advantage. With increased automation both devices keep print environments at peak performance levels.
VERSANT 80 PRESS The Versant 80 provides production press capabilities with walk-up simplicity, offset-quality performance and automated features that remove the guesswork out of optimising image quality, colour and registration. Printing at 80 pages per minute (ppm), the device delivers Ultra HD, 1200 x 1200 x 10-bit image quality at 2400 x 2400 dpi and can handle a variety of media types with a compact Belt Fuser system and Xerox’s EA Low Melt Dry Ink. For printers looking for extra productivity the Versant 80 will be available with a Performance Package which maintains top speeds of 80 ppm on all stocks up to 350 gsm along with an in-line spectrophotometer for increased colour automation. “We print everything from business cards to perfect bound books, and the Versant 80 enables us to fulfil these diverse, colourful jobs with an
offset-quality results which some customers prefer,” said Tim Sheppard, production director, Alphaset. “Additionally, the quality of the print means we’re able to produce short-run jobs more efficiently – saving both time and money for our customers and operation alike.” The Versant 80 comes with a choice of two servers: the Xerox EX-i 80 Print Server Powered by Fiery or the Xerox EX 80 Print Server Powered by Fiery. Printers can easily produce variable data-driven personalised communications with the addition of XMPie uDirect Classic Pro software.
COLOUR 800I/1000I PRESSES In the five years since its launch, the Xerox Colour 800/1000 Presses have helped providers expand their digital businesses by producing full-colour applications with vivid images on a wide range of paper stocks. The latest devices, the Xerox Colour 800i/1000i
Presses, include an optional Specialty Dry Ink Station that enhances documents with metallic gold or silver dry inks or applies spot or flood creative effects with clear dry ink. Xerox is the first in the industry to offer silver dry ink at rated speed. With the presses, printers can migrate lucrative foil stamping applications, such as invitations, certificates and business cards, to short-run, highvalue digital production. Multi-pass printing with clear ink adds an extra textural/dimensional feel and the “pop” of the silver and gold inks produces attention-grabbing effects on a wide range of applications. Among the devices’ productivity enhancements is a full-width array to automate critical press functions, time to production operational improvements and a new Xerox EX-P 1000i Print Server Powered by Fiery. www.xerox.co.uk
Quark improves PDF output with technology from Callas software QUARKXPRESS 2015, expected to be released at the end of March, will allow better, faster, cutting-edge PDF output with the help of Callas software. This is because this professional-grade software for layout and graphic design now supports document output in PDF/X-4 format, verified by Callas pdfToolbox. This means that PDF/X-4 files exported from QuarkXPress 2015 will be certified with the same technology used in Adobe Acrobat. “This is exactly the kind of solution we were looking for: something to check and certify that the files we produce meet ISO standard 159307”, said Matthias Günther, Global Director of the Desktop Business Unit at Quark Software Inc. This is where the company’s years of collaboration with Callas software paid off. “QuarkXPress has long been able to export PDF files, including options to export using the PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 standards. We already use Callas software’s technology to do so”, explained Matthias Günther. Because of
the company’s trust in Callas software, and Callas’ expertise in the field of PDF technology, it quickly became clear that the Berlin-based company was the right partner for adding PDF/X-4 export functionality. Callas offers pdfToolbox as a software development kit (SDK) which Quark integrated into its software, allowing it to run in the background. When the user chooses to export a file in PDF/X format, QuarkXPress allows them to select from PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 and PDF/X-4. If they choose PDF/X-4, pdfToolbox then checks
to ensure the new PDF/X-4 file really does meet the ISO standard. If it fails the test, perhaps because of specific elements within the file, the user will receive a notification to this effect. Otherwise, the result is a valid PDF/X-4 file, with all the advantages for further processing which the format brings. In addition to all the properties of PDF/X-3, PDF/X-4 offers features such as unflattened transparency, media-independent colours, and layering. This means it is no longer necessary to reduce transparent sections as early on in the process as the point of PDF creation. Instead, they can be processed in the printing house itself once the final printing colour space is known. Vivid debut new Easymount Flow Finishing Table VIVID Laminating Technologies will be launching an entirely new product line at this year’s Sign & Digital UK show. The Leicestershire-based firm will be introducing the Easymount Flow, a finishing table designed specifically to compliment their market-leading Easymount Wide Format Laminating Systems. Xerox Propels Inkjet Accessibility XEROX’S newest press will make inkjet technology a reality for more print service providers by breaking down barriers such as high print volumes, large footprint and cost. The Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press offers first of its kind features and carves out a new space within the booming production colour inkjet segment. The only fully-integrated roll to cut sheet, narrow web inkjet press is designed for print providers who produce 1.5 to 5 million impressions per month. It has the smallest footprint of any inkjet press on the market – 11.9 x 5.1 feet/ 3.58 x 1.55 metres (including the press tower) – a cost-effective option for various production environments. To help lower the entry point into production inkjet technology, the Rialto 900 prints duplex jobs, one-up on the smallest, narrow web (9.84 inches/250 millimetres) on the market. “We are creating a new, disruptive inkjet market segment with the Rialto 900 and there’s room for everyone,” said Paul Morgavi, chief operating officer, Inkjet Division, Xerox, and general manager, Impika. “The Rialto 900 changes the playing field by merging the cut sheet, inkjet and offset worlds – an important convergence for providers looking for a competitive edge and for print’s long-term survival.” The device offers the speed and image quality required to take on full-colour, personalised direct-mail, statements and book production. Its
The Rialto 900 is the first product jointly developed and launched by Xerox and Impika, accomplished within just two years of the acquisition. Additionally, Impika’s portfolio is now fully-integrated into Xerox’s production family and brand.
MORE INKJET ADVANCEMENTS all-in-one design means the front-end controller, paper roll and finishing components are housed within the machine – a space saver and service convenience. Automating and simplifying production is seamless with a range of workflow offerings, including XMPie PersonalEffect StoreFlow, XeroxFreeFlow Core and VI Suite and solutions from GMC and Solimar – all driving the press at rated speed for maximum productivity. Additional features include: • 1000 x 1000 dpi perceived resolution for highquality output. • Missing jet detection and duplex matching that are integrated and automated, saving time. • Media flexibility with Xerox’s water-based pigment HD ink. • Choice of a PDF or IPDS digital front end. • Integrated cutter and stacker. • Large, touch screen display for easy access to media selection, imposition, DFE status and job history.
Xerox Impika Evolution Inkjet Press, among the fastest inkjet printers at 832 feet/254 metres per minute, has enhanced image quality capabilities with the VHQ (Very High Quality) mode and other improvements. With VHQ, printers can increase the smoothness, detail and visual resolution of images on both offset and inkjet treated papers. Multi-size levels of ink are ejected from different nozzles onto the paper, maximising the control of ink drop placement at high speeds. Combined with a more robust profiling process, VHQ offers a competitive advantage and further extends the technology investment made by Evolution customers. The Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press is available for immediate order taking. The VHQ mode for the Xerox Impika Evolution Inkjet Press can be retrofitted to existing installations for a one-off charge and is available as an option on new systems. www.xerox.co.uk

CANON DEBUT OCÉ COLORWAVE 700
CANON has unveiled its latest high-performance wide format colour printer — the Océ ColorWave 700. Focusing on the dualpowers of productivity and versatility, Canon aims to help printers excel in the growing sign, display graphics, interior decoration and wide format sectors. The show marked the first opportunity to see the new model in action in the UK since its launch in February. A compelling showcase of customer applications were demonstrated to show the creative possibilities of Canon’s broad portfolio of technologies and solutions. This included samples produced on the ultrahigh-speed Océ ColorWave 900, the Océ Arizona 318 GL and 480 GT UV flatbeds and Canon’s high-end imagePROGRAF 8400SE, a productive aqueous poster printer to complement eco-solvent and UV technologies output. everything is possible with the right technology and the right partner.” Also participating in the application showcase was one of Europe’s leading photo finishing companies, CEWE. “We’re sure that visitors to the Canon stand at Sign & Digital were taken aback by our brand new and innovative CEWE 3D product, and what is possible with Canon’s Arizona technology. We’ve developed a revolutionary process that transforms photos from flat two dimensional images into beautiful three dimensional works of art – without the need for 3D glasses,” commented Duncan Midwood, Managing Director, CEWE Ltd. “Sign & Digital UK is a significant event for Canon in the UK,” said Dominic Fahy, Business Group Manager Display Graphics Systems and Imaging Supplies, Canon UK. “It is always an exciting hub of creativity and ambition, with an engaging mix of people from across the sign, display graphics and wide format industry. Manroland at The Print Show
Organisers of The Print Show have secured a major coup after print manufacturing giant Manroland Sheetfed signed up to exhibit at the inaugural edition of the event.
T
AKING PLACE AT the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from October 13th to 15th, The Print Show has been designed to support companies in the UK print sector. Serving as a cultural celebration of print, the show will pay tribute to all aspects of print, from the impact quality of printed work, through to the lasting legacy print can leave. Despite having only launched in November last year, The Print Show has already generated plenty of interest in the industry from both exhibitors and visitors alike, with a number of big names in print having signed up to the event. Speaking about the reasons behind the company’s decision to attend, Martin Hawley, managing director of Manroland Sheetfed UK, said that The Print Show is an “ideal opportunity” for the manufacturer to connect with new and existing customers in the UK market. The Print Show is the ideal opportunity for us to present to the print industry the changes we have made to the Roland 700 HiPrint and the Roland 700 Evolution which was launched last November, as well as the existing range of Manroland presses available.” He added “The show will also give Manroland the opportunity to meet new and existing customers to discuss their needs and requirements. In terms of the post sales market it will also allow us to discuss the range of service kits enhancements and upgrades we have available for their existing equipment, which would help them improve the efficiency of their current Manroland press.
“As well as our Manroland UK team, a technical expert from Manroland Sheetfed Offenbach will be at the event to discuss how Manroland’s latest developments can benefit print companies in terms of productivity and cost savings.” Hawley also highlighted the impact that The Print Show could have on the wider UK market and encouraged as many members of the industry as possible to come along and see what is on offer from both Manroland Sheetfed and the many other exhibitors that have already signed up. Martin Hawley, managing director of “The UK print market Manroland Sheetfed UK needs an event of this type to showcase what is available in an everchanging market and more importantly give focal point in the 2015 calendar for printers to meet and network with each other and their suppliers in a central location in the UK,” Hawley said. “From our point of view, it will provide us with the opportunity to meet with current and new prospective customers. We are hoping that the UK print market will embrace the event and fully support it. The UK needs a networking event of this type, and the more successful the event is, the better it will be for everyone connected with print in the UK. “Put the dates in your diary NOW, come along and see what Manroland Sheetfed can do for your business.” Event director Chris Davies paid tribute to Manroland Sheetfed’s decision to attend the event and mirrored Hawley’s comments by encouraging other industry members to follow suit and support the inaugural event. “Although we’ve already got a host of major names on board for this year’s event, to have a manufacturer like Manroland Sheetfed support the event is such a huge boost for us,” Davies said. He adds: “Manroland is a name that is well known not just in the UK industry, but in print markets all over the world, and we believe their presence at the event will help attract even more interest. “Having spoken to Martin at length about their decision to attend, it’s clear that they really value what we are trying to do here. The event is all about trying to boost the UK print markets and to give members of the industry all the help we can to enable them improve their own business. “Not only is Manroland Sheetfed a big name in the industry, some of the knowledge and expertise they have in print is almost incomparable. They’ve been round for so many years and seen plenty of change in the industry, so they know all there is to know about adapting your business to succeed. “I’m looking forward to catching up with them ahead of the show to find out a bit more about their plans and how they plan to use the event to promote their solutions to the UK market. www.theprintshow.co.uk www.manrolandsheetfed.com

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | April 2015
Memories are made of this
Last month Martin Christie mentioned the revelation by a senior Google executive that the temporary nature of digital technology – ever changing with unpredictable developments – might see the very real need to back up important images and information with real print in order to preserve them.
T
HIS VOTE OF faith in the actual world of hard copy should come as no surprise to us. Given that more than a decade ago predictions that paper would become redundant have been completely wrong, ink is proving to be more valuable than ever. The print industry has seen many developments over the last five hundred years, but the gradual nature of progress over the years has meant a stability and a natural progression, and most importantly a product that can be easily shared and stored. We accept that nothing lasts for ever, but we have the hard evidence that printed matter can be preserved, even for centuries, if it is properly cared for. In contrast, we have yet to see digital information survive more than a generation, and worse experience difficulties in transferring and sharing it with others. Nothing underlines this more starkly than the news, as I am writing these lines, of the abandonment of an attempt to register farmer’s subsidy payment exclusively on line. This is a farce that has been going on for months and has cost the tax payer some £150m, and farmers many frustrating and now wasted hours. We all know how complicated it can be to fill in the simplest form on line. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to complete a really complicated catalogue of stock and land use including measuring and mapping land use and boundaries on a computer screen must be living on another planet. The untested software completely failed to cope with the electronic traffic, even if the poor farmer managed to navigate his way through it. There are some 70,000 farmers in England and it should be perfectly obvious that what they are very good at is farming, which is a very practical, hands on skill. Expecting them, or actually compelling them to be additionally IT experts, was totally unrealistic. Add to that the fact that a lot of rural areas – and farms do tend to be in rural areas – have very poor internet connections, and you have a recipe for disaster, which has now happened. So the Rural Development Agency has now had to resort to that very traditional solution of sending out printed maps and pens, and the online portal will be used solely for registration purposes. That’s a very expensive and highly predictable result which I think any of us reading this column could have foreseen. Just wish we had the print contract! Apart from the short term unreliability of digital information, the longer term concern is literally how long it will last. This has two aspects. There is the potential degradation of data over time and continual save and resaving. This is recognised, but impossible to quantify. The second aspect
is the obsolescence of the software and hardware needed to read and reproduce the data. You only have to see an old movie from the sixties and seventies to see computers represented by banks of metal wardrobes with huge reels of magnetic tape whirling round to realise how far we have come in a few decades. A whole room full of equipment is now replaced by something that will fit in the palm of your hand. And where once that machines had to be operated by the men (and they usually were men) in white coats, now the average person has that technology at his or her fingertips. But being able to use it doesn’t mean you have to understand it, much like driving a car doesn’t necessitate an in depth knowledge of the internal combustion engine or the workings of the clutch mechanism. However, just like the car comparison, when there is a problem, like it won’t start or is making an unfamiliar noise, then you have to take it to an expert for advice. That’s accepted, but for some reason the relationship between the amateur and the expert seems to have been blurred when it comes to producing print. It seems such a simple exercise to the average, uninitiated customer, why does it become so complicated? There are two sides to this complication, and I raise them again in this column as it is part of a continuing trend in the nature of customers visiting print shops. Many have little if any previous experience of print and expect it to be a straight-forward transaction like choosing groceries, so they need to be guided through the process, if indeed they have the patience to listen. The opposite of this relationship is why should we as printers expect them, like the poor overburdened farmer, be an instant expert in IT. We, after all have the experience and the background knowledge, and hopefully the software and hardware able to produce the goods. It’s a matter of educating the customer that a visit to the print shop is not as simple as a trip to the supermarket. Naturally we want to make it as painless as possible, but there has to be something more magical about the adventure. One of the associated issues in the saving of digital data, and its possible fragility, is a general lack of concern over security and safety of devices. Most people with smart phones have managed to drop them, often several times, and smash the screen, or drown them in the toilet. Phone shops are probably making more money repairing phones than selling them. Even if all the images and information on the phone are kept safe, finding the correct item amongst many thousand is now a regular performance, not on or at the print shop counter, but in countless coffee bars and restaurants. Then there is the ubiquitous memory stick, now available in all shapes,

sizes and colours with many different memory capacities. This has become the most popular device for information transfer outside of email, and like email, is taken for granted. It doesn’t occur to the average person that it could fail, or get lost, and so they commit vital, irreplaceable content to a tiny piece of metal and plastic. I suspect we are not the only printers that has a box full of abandoned memory sticks left by customers with not only data, but sometimes house keys or other attachments. No one thinks to add simple contact information to a memory stick but I bet their pet dog has a tag. The memory stick became popular not only because it was small and easily carried, but because it was re-writable in the way a CD wasn’t. Previously the best device to transfer data that could be edited was the Zip disc. About two decades years ago this was the must-have for any designer. Storage capacity was limited by today’s standards, initially 100Mb then 250Mb. But in those days it was enough because file sizes, especially of images, were that much smaller. During a little spring clean cupboard clear out I found an old Zip drive and several discs. I didn’t really expect it to be still working, let alone be able to read any of the files. Amazingly it fired up with that nostalgic mechanical grunt, and although slow to load, magically ancient images started to appear. As if to defy the claim that old data and devices would be unserviceable, the sturdy Zip drive came back to life and revealed a set of photos I shot for a band some fifteen years before, and thought lost. Sure I have negatives going back thirty years and more than I can still print from, but they were real hard copies. Early digital files were pretty basic, not only in terms of camera resolution, but in saving and archiving without any established discipline. Now, not only has resolution, quality and file size increased massively, I have learnt enough to be methodical in filing, cataloguing, and saving back ups so that things can be hopefully easily retrieved. It’s the volume of digital information that has dramatically changed the nature of the problem of electronic archives. Way back I thought my 16Mb camera memory card was pretty big for storage. Now I shoot and have to store single pictures bigger than that, and have to think in gigabytes of the same amount, and I’ve had all the experience of more than ten years of all the things that can go wrong. It’s hardly surprising that the average customer with a smart phone is going to struggle. It’s not the obsolescence of the equipment that will be the potential downfall of digital data, but the forgivable incompetence of the user. These whole

new generation of users, and potential print customers, is still very new, and at the exponential rate that technology expands, is only going to get bigger. In many ways that should be the good news. The bad news is that there are potential problems we can barely begin to imagine. I had thought the band photos lost in cyber space and had told the members so as they had inevitably lost all the copy CDs I gave them at the time. They will be pleased to know they live again, especially as what was then seen as much as a bit of fun, will now be a priceless archive of a moment caught in time. Nearly as old as the Zip drive is Window’s XP operating system, once the universal choice for enterprise, now abandoned by Microsoft in terms of support and service. It was long superceded by versions like Vista and Windows 7 and then 8, but although new computers and laptops came shipped with the new software already installed, most established businesses have been slow to upgrade. According to estimates published recently, more than 17 per cent of computers are still running XP, most of them now unsupported. It’s understandable, not because of a natural conservatism and reluctance to change, but because of experience that teaches that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. So best leave things that work alone. Unfortunately, the lack of support from Microsoft means that they are no longer sorting problems and fixing bugs that may develop in the future, so it’s not just like a car manufacturer ceasing to make parts for an old model. So change will have
to come. As well as the computers, many print devices are run on a basic XP platform as it was such a stable one. Some older printers may not even have compatible drivers for more recent Windows drivers, so an upgrade of kit may mean some difficult and expensive choices. Windows do have some sort of a solution in XP Mode which can run on Windows 7 professional, but not Windows 8. It works as a virtual operating system, enabling the use of earlier programmes and devices but may not function on all machines, and is intended for use on computers not connected to the internet as this is where XP’s potential vulnerability will be. Windows 10, the next one, is out this year and it appears that something else being phased out is our old friend Internet Explorer. Just like an old friend we probably don’t make contact as much as we used to, with all these brash, attractive alternatives at our disposal. But like XP a number of things like on line databases were designed to function around Explorer, so there could be further implications for users. There is information on the Mircosoft website but inevitably the corporate view tends to major on the good news. It would be worth keeping a watching brief through Google to see if changes will effect anything important to the digital studio. If I pick anything up I’ll be sure to let you know. This month’s column went to bed just before the opening of the Photography Show at the NEC, so full details of relevant news and products next month.

THE Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) has welcomed the results of a Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) commissioned YouGov Poll, which showed that over half of the UK’s consumers visiting their local supermarket or food retailer prefer their groceries and fresh produce to be available in paper-based packaging. The research revealed that over half of the 2,289 people surveyed in the nationwide poll, (some 57%) said they preferred their grocery and food packaging in paper-based material, whilst some 31% expressed no preference and just 8% preferred plastic containers. The consumers surveyed were also asked how likely they were to purchase a product from a retailer using paper-based containers as opposed to plastic containers. Some 46% said they were more likely to purchase an item if the packaging was paper-based, compared to 47% who said it would make no difference. The CPI poll’s findings also suggest that paper-based packaging materials have a positive effect on consumers’ purchasing decisions, as is evident from the 46% who prefer to buy a product from a retailer using paper-based containers. According to the CPI, the findings also reflect that paper and corrugated remain the most popular form of packaging for consumers in the UK, with corrugated packaging being the most recycled packaging medium, as well as being one of the most engaging to consumers, due to its personalisation and colour printability qualities. The results from the CPI’s poll further underline the findings from PEFC’s first global consumer survey, which showed that certification labels, such as the PEFC label, is one of the most trusted means of giving confidence to consumers that wood-based products are sustainably sourced. The findings from the PEFC global consumer survey revealed that more than 80% of consumers globally want companies sourcing certified material from sustainable managed forests to use certification labels. The PEFC global consumer survey also showed that certification labels, such as the PEFC’s, are the most trusted means of giving confidence to consumers that wood-based products are sustainably sourced. Consumers globally believe that it is important to make ethical choices, with 60% of all those surveyed agreeing that their shopping choice for a labelled product can make a positive difference to the world’s forest. Only a small minority, 10%, felt that their choice for a sustainably sourced product would not make a difference. The first PEFC Global Consumer Survey was undertaken by German-based GfK on behalf of PEFC International with a sample of a total of 13,000 people in 13 countries, 1,000 men and women aged 16+ years per country, in Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA. www.pefc.co.uk

New Basis Weights to Lightweight Board Alaska Plus Range INTERNATIONAL Paper has announced the launch of two new basis weights of its Alaska Plus lightweight GC2 board. The new weights are: 190gsm which is replacing the standard Alaska 200gsm, offering the same performance in packaging products with a 5% yield advantage. This basis weight has a unique position on the market, as it is the only high-stiffness GC2 board product below 200gsm 270gsm is an additional grade that allows customers to benefit from a tighter stacked caliper range of Alaska Plus. ‘With these two new basis weights we are able to offer a more comprehensive range of products, making it easier for our customers to select the right quality for their specific packaging needs’ explained Michael Krüger, Commercial Director Coated Paperboard & Recycled Specialties at International Paper. International Paper is in the process of transitioning all GC2 grades from the standard Alaska to the new lightweight Alaska Plus, and expects to complete this switch by the end of June 2015. From July onwards, all GC2 board products made at the company’s Kwidzyn mill in Poland will be part of the new lightweight Alaska Plus range. ‘We are working closely with our customers to ensure continued product availability for Alaska until the last production takes place in June, and enable a seamless transition to Alaska Plus’, continued Mr. Krüger. Packaging converters and brand owners will be able to switch to Alaska Plus without any performance related adjustments, whilst enjoying the commercial and environmental benefits of a modern lightweight folding boxboard. www.internationalpaper.com

FAVINI, a company that has always stood out for its keen sense of social and environmental responsibility, has a number of important announcements regarding ecology. The company currently supports two major international projects — a reforestation project in Uganda and one for the generation of renewable energy in India — both aimed at offsetting the environmental impact of its ecological papers Shiro and Crush. Crush already features components with low environmental impact both in terms of the materials themselves and the energy used to produce this ecological paper. Made using process residues from organic products (citrus fruit, kiwi fruit, corn, coffee, hazelnuts, almonds, olives, cherries, and lavender), replacing up to 15% of the cellulose of virgin tree pulp, Crush also contains 30% post-consumer recycled waste and is produced with 100% green energy self-generated from renewable (hydroelectric) sources. Italy’s Ministry for the Environment has promoted a study with Italian firms to determine their environmental impact, and Favini selected Crush in order to analyse CO2 emissions throughout their value chain (from transportation of raw materials through to distribution of finished product). Comparing Crush with another paper with similar characteristics, but made without byproducts and using conventional energy, Favini has managed to achieve reduction of its environmental impact, in terms of greenhouse gases, by 20%. In order to increase both benefits of the product and the level of Corporate Climate Responsibility, Favini has chosen to finance a project in Uganda that, through carbon credits obtained, makes Crush a perfectly eco-sustainable, zero-impact product. The goal of this project, sponsored by Favini, is to restore over 6,200 hectares of the Kibale National Park. The initiative will benefit both the ecosystem, through reforestation, and the local population, in terms of employment and in living conditions. www.favini.com

Wedding Bells are ringing… for printers MORE HOT FOIL PRINTING TIPS FROM DAVID CHILL THIS is the time of the year for printers to rejoice... it’s wedding season. A bit early I hear you all cry, well no, remember that traditionally weddings take place in the summer months, June, July, August, and on average wedding invitations will be sent out at least three months in advance therefore February, March and April are the ideal months for customers to order their wedding stationery. Refreshingly there is no such thing as a traditional wedding these days as every bride and groom have their own ideas of what they want and this is becoming more and more diverse, but here is a rough guide to typical style wedding stationery. Printed invites between 50 – 80 people during the day and then another 30 – 50 people in the evening. When the happy couple are Greek, Indian or Pakistani for example, then this could be anything from 200 – 1000 +. Thankfully weddings come in all shapes with print requirements to suit. Questions to ask at this stage are will it be a church wedding or civil service, if it is a church service then the couple may require an Order of Service for each person or one between two. Also to quote numbers you will need to ascertain the religious denomination as Church of England or Roman Catholic Weddings will have an Order of Service that can run into anything from four to maybe sixteen pages. Then finally will it be a sit down meal or a buffet Wedding Breakfast so you can ascertain if table place cards are required. These are just the basic requirements, there is much more to wedding stationery. Most digital printers stock 300 – 350 gsm stock so you can design and create most of your wedding stationery in house whether it be Conqueror, Fedrigoni or GF Smith and the like, but the challenge to quick printers can be when the bride requires foiling. (Nothing like a shiny glittering bride but David is still advising about the stationery – Ed) Now, It would be a shame to turn down such needed work for the sake of this. On average wedding sales can be between £200 - £400 and rising up to as much as £1000 in some cases. We all need to be part of this market. I am aware a lot of printers use standard books and designs to take all the hassle out of designing, but these days many prospective customers want to be unique.
RECENT TRENDS Weddings closely follow fashion and the inspiration of the High Street. In the early days customers had a choice of about 12 designs to choose from with a ‘Take it or leave it ‘ attitude from the printers. Now the Internet has created higher aspirations that we need to deliver. 1. Vintage is very much ‘In’, designs that are retro, with muted colours, Art Deco and designs harking back to 30s, 40s and 1950s. 2. Many designs are now often single flat cards A5 or A6 instead of the standard greetings card, folded design
3. Bold colour and colour combinations, such as fuchsia, bright red, and turquoise are taking over from the standard whites and creams. 4. When it comes to foiling, rose gold is the big new colour along with silver very much over gold as a colour choice. Copper, gunmetal and pewter are also new contenders. 5. Basic, elegant, simple designs are also popular with traditional fonts, simple wording and design, everything less fussy. The homemade ‘crafty’ look is now looking dated, fading slightly in favour of newer ideas. 6. The final trend is currently having your wedding stationery ‘debossed’ this can be achieved by either Letterpress or via hot foil. 7. Weddings are so much more than just an invitation or an order of service. According to recent statistics an average wedding in the provinces can cost £12,000 - £18,000 and in London and other large cities £15,000 - £30,000 upwards. Other new trends we have adopted from the ‘good old USA’ include save the date cards as well as rehearsal dinner cards. Don’t forget the post wedding thank you cards, printed serviettes and the odd book of matches. Favour Boxes are yet another item that you can be asked for and these would ideally need to be foil printed with the name of the bride and groom and often the date of the wedding. Also popular now at weddings are personalised printed ribbons that can be created in a whole range of colours, sizes and widths, ideal for: - The wedding cars, as table runners, for the flowers, as personalised printed napkin rings, even ribbons around the favour boxes, as banners and on the backs of chairs. Anything for weddings that can be easily personalised is very much in vogue. Table plans to be placed at the entrance to the reception room. Just a small word of warning from our experiences, make the plans adjustable for late name changes. In essence weddings are a market that you should not overlook – foil printing enhances any design and because it cannot be printed on a home computer, this is where quick print professionals can win new business. Whilst the internet might be great for research, a lot of brides and grooms often don’t want to trust ordering online and want to be able to touch and feel the product and talk to you ‘the experts’ to get it right for their ‘big day’ Useful Websites: www.hotfoiluk.com and www.ribbonprintingeurope.com Versatility in Print 01905 776730

POST TORTOISE POLITICIAN While stitching a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old farmer, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to politicians and their role as our leaders. The old farmer said, “Well, as I see it, most politicians are ‘Post Tortoises’.” Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post tortoise’ was. The old farmer said, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that’s a post tortoise.” The old farmer saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain. “You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, he’s elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of idiot put him up there to begin with.”

Known largely for its stark black and white colouring. Eats shoots and leaves.”
GOLFING GAG FROM ACROSS THE POND There were two golfers on the golf course. One of the men pulled out a cigarette, and asked his friend for a light. His friend pulls out a 12inch Bic lighter. Wow, where did you get such a large Bic? Oh, my genie got it for me. Your genie? You have a genie? Where is he? He is in my golf bag. The friend says, ‘can I see him?’ His friend says ‘ yes, sure!’ So the friend looks in the bag and out comes the genie. The man says to the genie; ‘I am your master’s best friend. Would you grant me just one wish?’ The genie says ‘yes, just one wish’. So the man wishes for a million bucks. The genie goes back in the golf bag without saying a word. Pretty soon, the sky starts to get dark. Then it gets even darker. The man looks up and sees a million ducks. He gets real upset, and says ‘what is the matter with your genie? Is he hard of hearing? I said a million Bucks, not a million Ducks.’ His friend says to him, ‘do you really think I asked for a 12 inch Bic?
CLEVER KID My grandparents were taking me on a vacation to Disneyland. Grandma was excited for me when we boarded the plane, she exclaimed that I was lucky, because I got the Shakespeare seat. “Why is it the Shakespeare seat Grandma?” “You are in seat 2-B, so it’s the Shakespeare seat.” “Don’t be silly Grandma. All the seats on an airplane are Shakespeare seats.” “How do you figure that?” “Well, it’s either seat 2-B or not 2-B.”

ADVICE FROM THE STATES A travelling salesman was passing through a small town in the West when he saw a little old man sitting in a rocking chair on the stoop of his house. The little old man looked so contented that the salesman couldn’t resist going over and talking to him. “You look as if you don’t have a care in the world,” the salesman told him. “What is your formula for a long and happy life?” “Well,” replied the little old man, “I smoke six packs of cigarettes a day, I drink a quart of bourbon every four hours and six cases of beer a week. I never wash and I go out every night.” “My goodness,” exclaimed the salesman, “that’s just great! How old are you?” “Twenty-five,” was the reply.
animals was cemented: best buddies, best pals. A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his ‘thing’ and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life. The moral of the story? When you’re hung like a horse, you don’t need a BMW to pick up chicks...

A farmer was counting his cows.

MEMORY MATTERS A husband went to the police station to file a missing persons report. Husband: “I lost my wife, she went shopping hasn’t come back yet.” Officer: “What is her height?” Husband: “Average, I guess.” Officer: “Slim or healthy?” Husband: “Not slim, but probably healthy.” Officer: “Colour of hair?” Husband: “Changes according to season.” Officer: “What was she wearing?” Husband: “Not sure, either a dress or a suit.” Officer: “Was she driving?” Husband: “Yes.” Officer: “Colour of the car?” Husband: “Black Audi A8 with supercharged 3.0 litre V6 engine generating 333 horse power teamed with an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission with manual mode. And it has full LED headlights, which use light emitting diodes for all light functions and has a very thin scratch on the front left door...”
THERAPY FOR PRINTERS Picture yourself near a stream. Birds are singing in the crisp, cool mountain air. Nothing can bother you here. No one knows your secret place. You are in total seclusion. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity. You can easily make out the face of the person you are holding under the water. There now. Feeling better?
TWO RETIRED RACEHORSES Two rather old retired racehorses are in a bar getting totally drunk. After about two hours the first racehorse says “You know... when I was a young racehorse... from one hundred starts, I won (hic) 90 races, got five seconds and five thirds... I am without doubt the greatest racehorse that ever lived.“
But, when he rounded them up…
In response to this and approximately a half an hour later the second racehorse responded, “Oh yeah... when I was a young racehorse... from one hundred starts, I won (hic) 95 races, got two seconds and three thirds... I must be the greatest racehorse that ever lived.” Now it was about this time that the barman (a greyhound) decided that they were drunk enough so he said, “I am sick of you two telling one another how great you are, you are both drunk and I am throwing you out of the bar, but before I do I want to let you know that when I was a young greyhound, from one hundred starts, I won 100 races, no seconds and no thirds.” The two racehorses were shocked and for five minutes sat with their mouths open until the first racehorse finally said, “Isn’t that amazing... a talking dog!”
FACTS IN PRINT I am in shape.…Round is a shape. Time may be a great healer, but it is a lousy beautician. Conscience is what hurts when everything else feels so good. Talk is cheap because supply exceeds demand. There will always be death and taxes, however death does not get worse every year. I am not fat.... I am a nutritional overachiever. I am having an out-of-money experience. I plan on living forever... So far, so good! Practice safe eating... Always use condiments. A day without sunshine is like... night. It’s frustrating when you know all the answers... and nobody asks the questions. Brain cells come and brain cells go, but fat cells live forever. Age doesn’t always bring wisdom. Sometimes age comes alone. Life not only BEGINS at forty. It also begins to show. You don’t stop laughing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop laughing.
…he had 200.
