Steam Print THE magic of printing is usually hidden in print rooms and factories, even sheds, workshops and studios of printers and designers. Can you help to bring printing to the great outdoors? – support the Big Steam Print! The plan is to turn a 12.5-tonne vintage steamroller into a massive printing press, and take it on a tour of museums and festivals in summer 2016 so that everyone can watch it in action. Students, community groups and acclaimed artists will produce their biggest-ever prints in a heady haze of steam and ink. Prints which survive the pummelling of 12.5 tonnes of steel on tarmac will form the Big Steam Print exhibition at Phoenix Gallery in Brighton from 6 to 21 August 2016. This can only happen with your help. Please support the Big Steam Print and receive your choice of brilliant awards, including postcards, tote bags and limited edition designed prints. Situated in the Sussex South Downs, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft focuses on the artists and craftspeople who made Ditchling a creative hub in the 20th century. The site was founded by sisters Hilary and Joanna Bourne in 1985 as a place to display their collection of local art, but in 2012 a £2.3m grant from HLF and other donors paved the way for a major renovation project. The museum was one of the finalists for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014. http://www.artfund.org/get-involved/arthappens/big-steam-print Museum staff are working flat-out to ensure a giant steam-powered art project can be rolled out in a few months’ time. Staff at Ditchling Museum have launched a fundraising campaign to take a 12.5 tonne steamroller on a printing tour across Sussex and beyond to help create giant artworks. The 1926 machine will be used as a giant printing press in a number of live performances planned through spring and summer. The project is already steaming ahead with around half of the target already
achieved thanks to more than 130 donors. Staff at the museum, which celebrates the village’s rich printing heritage including the prodigious output by controversial artist Eric Gill, have said they want to use the project to reveal the process of printing usually hidden away in studios and workshops. The minimum size of each work will be one metre by one metre with art designs, lino, Japanese printing paper and wooden boards all laid on the floor before the steam roller is driven over. The project will include designs created by leading printmakers including Angie Lewin, Rob Ryan and Anthony Burrill along with students at local primary schools, colleges and universities. If successful with their fundraising, it is hoped steam printing performances will be held at Amberley Museum, which housed the steam roller, on March 28, the London Transport Museum Acton on April 23 and 24, at The Level in Brighton as part of the Brighton Festival on May 22 and at Ditchling Village Fair on June 18. The artworks will then go on display at the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton. Lucy Jenner, learning and outreach manager at the museum, said: “The steam print idea was first raised to us last summer by artist Pea Crabtree and we just ran with it. “We wanted it to be a big project and we had to look at how we are going to fund this so we went to the Art Fund who really liked the idea to. “This kind of printing has been done before, mainly with modern rollers and mainly in the States but it’s never been done with this many artists, community groups and schools involved before. “For the artists it will be the biggest artworks they have ever done. This whole project is harping back to the old ways of printing by hand. Mimaki JV300 fits the bill for Dublin IQ Group THE smart visual solutions company – Dublinbased IQ Group recently added a Mimaki JV300-160 and CG-160FXII to its portfolio of printing hardware through authorised Mimaki reseller, Reprocentre, and the company is delighted with the investment. The IQ Group is a vibrant company in every sense of the word. From the vivid and high quality print it produces, the positive energy and growth its experienced since it formed five years ago, and even through to the dynamic team and bright and quirky premises; it’s a colourful company. So it’s not surprising that, when they decided to expand their hardware portfolio, the Mimaki JV300-160 solvent printer was befitting of a place in the company’s print room. “Quality is key to IQ,” explains one of the company’s Directors, Gary Upton. “The Mimaki JV300 provides great print quality and continuity of colour every time, regardless of changes in temperature, giving us the ability to colour match perfectly. We’re a reactive company; we offer a fast turnaround for our customers and the JV300 fits right in here giving us speed and flexibility. We’ve
been really impressed.” IQ, or Image Quest as it’s formally known, originally started out as a print management service and signage company, but quickly evolved to incorporate in-house print production to make them more cost effective, offer faster turnaround times and give their customers more security and confidentiality. “We offer the complete workflow in-house,” continues Upton. “We have a creative design studio, a highly-productive print department and a team of installation experts, so we can guarantee a premium service and products every time. We do a vast amount of contract work and we need to be consistent on every level, including superior print output, which is exactly what we get with the JV300.” IQ made the investment in the Mimaki JV300 through authorised Mimaki reseller; Reprocentre as its Sales Director, Eoin Honan describes. “We’ve provided a variety of hardware and materials for IQ over the last few years, but when they came to us looking for something to increase their productivity without compromising on quality
or colour gamut we recommended the Mimaki JV300 solvent printer. It is super-fast and the SS21 solvent inks mean beautiful bright blocks of colour aren’t an issue. We also supplied a Mimaki bulk-ink system (MBIS) with the JV300 which gives IQ higher production levels by running the printer overnight and unattended on long runs.” www.iqgroup.ie. Further information about Reprocentre and its products and services can be found at www. reprocentre.ie. Full details of Mimaki’s product portfolio is available via its Irish and UK distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd at www.hybridservices.co.uk
R A Smart & O’Neills boost Rugby Club with Mimaki MACCLESFIELD Rugby Union Club is competing in the 2015/16 season with the benefit of sponsorship from local textile print specialist and Mimaki reseller, R A Smart of Bollington, just outside Macclesfield. As an ex-Macclesfield RUFC player himself, R A Smart director Magnus Mighall is all too well aware of the important role that the club plays in the local community; “Sport provides a fantastic opportunity for young people to extend and develop themselves in all sorts of positive ways and the club has always believed passionately in nurturing players throughout their journey from Mini to Junior and Youth Rugby and eventually into the senior game from where the National stage beckons. Here at Smart’s we’re delighted to be able to play our part by becoming sponsors of the first team kit.” R A Smart now operates what is regarded by many as the country’s leading digital and screen print facility for the textile industry, utilising a substantial collection of Mimaki printers alongside other digital print hardware and working with some of the biggest names in sportswear and fashion. In recent years the company has been one of the real pioneers of digital print technology for textile, installing state of the art systems for customers throughout the UK, covering a vast array of applications. As a major reseller of Mimaki textile print equipment, Mighall is keen to acknowledge the additional involvement and support of the club from one of its largest dye sublimation customers; O’Neills, one of Ireland’s leading sportswear manufacturing companies. “O’Neills was one of the earliest adopters of digital print technology in sportswear production,
operating a significant number of Mimaki machines in its factories. We are fortunate to work with such a dedicated and professional operation in developing this technology further in the sector – it’s really exciting to be able to jointly support Macclesfield RUFC,” he states. The Mimaki dye sublimation printers favoured by O’Neills are extensively used as production machines in the sportswear and fashion markets. Such is O’Neills’ increasing demand; additional Mimaki printers are currently on order with R A Smart to add further capacity during 2016. The development of digital textile print has heralded a new era in sportswear personalisation, creating the opportunity to produce ever more colourful, eye-catching and creative team apparel without the need for labour intensive weaving, stitching or embroidery of the custom elements. O’Neills provides kit to the first, second and third teams at Macclesfield with a strong match day presence through pitch-side advertising. Commercial Director at the club, David Wilkinson is delighted to have the support of two such enthusiastic and committed sponsors, commenting; “Both R A Smart and O’Neills have made a tremendous contribution to the club. We really appreciate the support from Magnus and his company, especially with his long-standing affiliation to the club, and we’re particularly proud to have O’Neills on board given their welldeserved reputation at the forefront of branded sportswear production.” For their part, this was clearly an appealing opportunity for O’Neills to further raise its profile at grass roots level outside the company’s Irish
homeland where its dominance in the sector is almost legendary. From its origins in the early 1900s as a manufacturer of Gaelic footballs, O’Neills now supplies kit at the very highest levels to champions across a wide range of sports including Gaelic Games, football, rugby, boxing, cricket, basketball, athletics, the Special Olympics, hockey, and netball. Commenting further on the relationship with R A Smart and Macclesfield RUFC, Paul Houston from O’Neills adds: “The relationship which we have developed with both Mimaki and R A Smart and the long term support provided by both companies has allowed us to grow with confidence and develop new market opportunities. We are equally delighted to be associated with Macclesfield Rugby Union Club and wish them success as they head into this season and in the future.” Mighall concludes, “It seemed extremely appropriate to harness the power of digital print as part of our sponsorship of the club and we look forward to enjoying a successful season together.” www.hybridservices.co.uk, www.rasmart.co.uk, www.oneills.com

Northern Lights exceeds expectations for Duplo AFTER two days of intense discussions and demonstrations with customers from the north, Duplo UK’s second Northern Lights event, which took place at The Royal Armouries in Leeds (8-9 March), drew to a successful conclusion. Managing director Peter Jolly reflected on a show that he said had “exceeded expectations”, with the ratio of actual visitors to pre-registrations being far higher than in 2015, when Northern Lights first took place. Duplo UK successfully signed orders worth £350,000 for new equipment in Leeds, with a pipeline of a further one million pounds to follow up. Among the companies who chose to invest in Duplo technology at Northern Lights was first-time Duplo customer, trade printer RouteOne Print, which invested in a Duplo DC-746 multifinisher to help it offer a new one-day express turnaround service on certain simple marketing products such as flyers and business cards.
Director Adam Carnell said: “At the moment everything goes through the guillotines and we wanted to separate this work out. The automation of the DC-746 set it apart from the other options on the market: the speed of set-up and the variety of products we can put through it. Quality is another key: we had to make sure that we couldn’t see a difference between our guillotinecut products and the products the DC-746 produces.” An iSaddle investment was made by Stockport-based NHS-specialist SF Taylor, which has been a Duplo customer for many years and continues to invest in latest printing technology. “Our key focus is to deliver cost effective solutions to our customers, and to do this we have to become smarter,”
said Managing Director Simon Young. “The iSaddle will help achieve further automation and drive more efficiency through the business. It was the perfect product to complement our business and support our continued investment strategy.” Another customer drawn to the iSaddle was KJB Print in Cannock, Staffordshire. Its recent purchase of Ricoh C7100 and C9100 presses with 700mm long banner sheet capability meant it was looking to be able to finish A4 landscape products in-house. “Commercially the iSaddle was right for our customers,” said Managing Director Stephen Egerton. “We consider Duplo to be a true partner. We work closely together and when we have issues they are always consultative and efficiently supportive.” Northern Lights drew together a number of additional technology partners, giving visitors the opportunity to take in advancements from paper through to industrial finishing. “Our customer forum before the show indicated that people wanted to see wider finishing applications and industrial finishing, and the partnerships have added real value to the event. I think all partners have gained real value from the show,” said Peter Jolly. “We also ran a particularly successful ‘clinic’ style area for operators, where actual users of our 5000 booklet system and our technical staff were able to help customers achieve best practice in running their finishing kit.” www.duplouk.com

Callprint rolls out national hub refurbs PRINT and visual communications specialist Callprint has commenced the refurbishment of its regional hubs, both internally and externally, and has also added a new promotional products on-demand service offering for its customers. The national roll-out of the branch refurbs has commenced in the north with Manchester being the first hub to undergo the refreshment, which includes new external and internal graphics, along with the installation of the promotional on-demand units, which will display a variety of personalised print product offerings that customers can view, select and order direct in the branch or online. The new units will be displayed in 10 of the 19 regional hubs, and will offer products such as; canvas prints, photo frames, promotional gift boxes, menus and beverage packaging etc. Customers can order products for events, celebrations such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings or engagements, as well as restaurants, bars and shops being able to order menus, table displays and promotional items for their own usage. The promotional units will also have LED screens on top of each display, with the media displayed on the screens being controlled from one central location in London, which will enable Callprint to display the latest promotional offerings and personalised messages relevant to each of the regional branches. The Manchester hub will be the first to experience and include the new
offering, which has been designed to capitalise on the numerous bars and restaurants within the region, whilst at the same time providing an additional offering for any walkin trade customers. All of the new promotional products will also be available to order online and built into Callprint’s online ordering system. Customers will also be able to select, view and order their products online in the branch with a member of staff taking them through each step, providing a painless in-store experience, and allowing costs to be controlled and managed. Commenting on the new branch refurbs and additional service offerings, Managing Director, Steve Cheek, stated, “These new service offerings adds to our product portfolio and increases the traffic through our offices, whilst at the same time giving customers a new in-store ordering experience.” Steve added, “With the addition of digital signage and on-screen media we are also adding the management of on-screen content to our offering, thereby adding a further service and also allowing us to personalise messages and information into our hubs.” This latest announcement underlines Callprint’s original statement of intention to continue to grow and develop its business operations. In November last year Callprint announced its intentions for further development for the business, including improvements to both its internal and external communications. These included an updating and revamping of its websites, as well as a refresh and refurbishment of a number of its production facility hubs around the UK. www.callprint.co.uk
printMAX’s Vicky Jarman Marathon Challenge
VICKY Jarman, Marketing Manager from printMAX is gearing up to undertake the gruelling 26.2 miles of the London Marathon just one year after having begun running! Unfortunately for Vicky, the dates couldn’t be worse, you’ll be able to meet Vicky at Sign and Digital UK but just three days later she will be running the historic course around London. For the London Marathon Vicky is raising money for the charity, NEPTanzania, a relatively small charity which aims to improve access to education and the overall wellbeing of Maasai children in rural Tanzania with the support of village chiefs and elders. Vicky has only ever completed a maximum of a 10K race in the past but decided to take the plunge and sign up for her biggest challenge to date, as she explains: “My Mum, a keen runner herself, encouraged me to consider signing up for the London Marathon, with the ballot offering just a 20% chance of getting in I didn’t think I had anything to worry about. However, as a 10 year London Marathon volunteer I can apply for an allocated place, which apparently I was mad enough to do! I only started running last year to try and get to 6k as a goal, I never thought I’d have 26.2 miles looming but I’m confident that my training and willpower will pay off. It’s not ideal facing the marathon in the same week as Sign UK, the exhibition alone is usually pretty exhausting but as they say, if it was easy, everyone would do it! I’m looking forward to running past Buckingham Palace to cross the finish line.” Added Michael Bolton, managing director, printMAX, “We are all completely behind Vicky and are 100% confident she will be able to complete and return to work on the Monday with a well-deserved medal. We all wish her the very best of luck in accomplishing this huge challenge.” To support Vicky’s fundraising efforts, donations are being welcomed via the following website: www.justgiving.com/Victoria-Jarman.

Xerox introduce two new inkjet presses at drupa TO help print providers capitalise on inkjet’s growing momentum, Xerox has announced it will launch two new inkjet presses, the Xerox Brenva HD Production Inkjet Press and the Xerox Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press, at drupa 2016, May 31-June 10 in Düsseldorf. The presses are the first in an innovative new series of inkjet offerings to come from Xerox; Brenva HD to the cut-sheet inkjet market, driven by the Xerox FreeFlow Print Server, and Trivor 2400 with the Xerox IJ Print Server powered by Fiery to the continuous feed inkjet market. Each will enable print providers to accelerate growth and drive the production of more highvalue applications such as direct mail, transactional, books and catalogues. “We are focused on expanding our inkjet portfolio with more choices and greater capabilities for print providers to grow their businesses,” said Robert Stabler, senior vice president and general manager, Global Graphic Communications Business Group, Xerox. “With the addition of Brenva HD and Trivor 2400, we’re making inkjet more
accessible and affordable to a larger number of print providers.” Xerox is targeting the space that sits below the gap between high-end toner and low-end inkjet presses with Brenva HD. The new press combines the cost effectiveness of inkjet with the flexibilities of cutsheet to address the needs of print providers in the light direct mail, transactional and book markets. Incorporating many of the reliable paper-path components of the award-winning Xerox iGen, Brenva HD offers best-in-class automation and reliability features to maximise press productivity including: • An inline spectrophotometer to assist with calibration and profiling; • Object-oriented colour management to distinguish text, graphics and images and optimises the image quality of each accordingly; • K-only mode so it will run as a cost effective monochrome press. The Xerox Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press provides printers with a platform built to grow as business demands increase with the same machine
scaling up for more speed, volume and solutions. The Trivor 2400 press combines high performance and increased speed (551 feet/168 metres per minute in colour; 656 feet/200 metres per minute in monochrome) in a small footprint. The press will allow printers to move into shorterrun catalogues, magazines and colour books, giving customers more flexibility. Engineered-in automation ensures superb, reliable image quality including inline density optimisation, clear pixel technology,
and missing jet detection and correction. A new print server developed in partnership with EFI, the Xerox IJ Print Server powered by Fiery, will handle multiple data streams for various application types. Duplo launches iSaddle Pro Digital
THIS new configuration for near-line saddle stitching combines the Duplo DSF-6000 sheet feeder to the iSaddle. The iSaddle PRO Digital System provides a ‘unique solution’. It converts pre-collated digital media into high quality booklets, to meet the needs of modern high-speed digital presses that provide longer print runs faster. This launch reinforces Duplo’s position as the provider of the widest range of bookletmaking and saddle stitching finishing systems in the printing industry. Once again, Duplo is bringing saddle stitching technology to the high volume digitally printed applications, such as A4 landscape, brochures, personalised reward statements and photo album booklets.
Dubbed the ‘big brother’ of the DSF-2200 sheet feeder, unveiled at Duplo’s London Calling in November, the DSF-6000 has three times the capacity. It works incredibly efficiently with the highest-speed digital print systems from all of the main machine manufacturers. Other major benefits of the Duplo iSaddle PRO Digital System include: • Full personalisation, every booklet is unique; format changes are made within seconds • Technologically-advanced Air Management System to ensure consistent feeding on a wide variety of paper sizes • Finished booklets from two up 90mm x 75mm right up to A4 landscape and Duplo’s photo album format 300mm x 300mm, and weights from 64gsm to 300gsm • Speeds of up to 600 sheets per minute • Ultrasonic sensors that accurately detect feed errors, should any occur • Fully automated through PC-based job programming systems to guarantee that operators do not make any mistakes, as well as bar code settings that ensure users are in full control of the processes • An integrated buffer system to ensure that high speed, productivity and control of sheets being fed into and coming off the system
Peter Jolly, Duplo UK Managing Director, said: “The iSaddle PRO Digital System offers a unique solution for converting pre-collated digital media into high quality booklets. This meets the demands of the industry to produce longer print runs faster from the latest digital presses. As an International player dedicated to developing best-in-class technology, Duplo has an unrivalled reputation as a print finishing innovator. However, we can see opportunities to extend our reach by constantly developing further products in line with our beliefs and values that focus on precision, automation and highly-productive systems.” Réginald De Ghellinck, Duplo International Product Manager, said: “Organisations such as banks and insurance companies have to produce personalised, confidential booklets for their customers. OS Maps out of this world USING NASA open data, Ordnance Survey has created a one-off paper and digital map of the Martian landscape. OS, whose database of Great Britain has up to 500 million unique geographic features and is currently working with other countries on four different countries to improve their geo capabilities, has produced the Mars map to see if Ordnance Survey mapping has potential use for future Mars missions. David Henderson, OS Director of Products, explains: “The private sector and space agencies are currently in competition to land the first person on Mars. Becoming more familiar with space is something that interests us all and the opportunity to apply our innovative cartography and mapping tradecraft to a different planet was something we couldn’t resist. We were asked to map an area of Mars in an OS style because
our maps are easy to understand and present a compelling visualisation, and because of this we can envisage their usefulness in planning missions and for presenting information about missions to the public.” The new map covers a 3672x2721km extent of the Mars surface and has been produced to a scale of 1 to 4 million. OS cartographic design consultant, Chris Wesson, designed the map, he says: “We have set out from the start to treat the Mars data no different to how we would treat OS GB data or any other Earth-based geography. Even though the principles are the same, the design and the aesthetics of an Earth map differ considerably. The cartographic style is something that is very different to your typical planetary map and is identifiable as an OS map. The key ingredients to this style are the soft colour palette
of the base combined with the traditional map features such as contours and grid lines, and the map sheet layout complete with legend.” This year OS celebrates 225 years of delivering the most accurate portrait of Great Britain, but the Mars map is a giant step for the organisation. It last created a map of outside of British shores in the mid-1990s. www.os.uk

Totem Innovation by Phillips Direct THE appointment of Russell Whitlock as MD announced in mid February by Phillips Direct is already leading to innovative new ideas. The Company has an established range of Quick Change Display Totems in a range of sizes from A4 to 1600mm. The range is designed to accept standard printed, paper insert sheets containing your promotional offer or message and hence, updating your message simply involves printing new sheets and inserting them. Now the range of Quick Change Display Totems are available through two entirely new channels. The Totem Postal Service makes the Display
Totem(s) of your choice, from A4 to 1600mm high, available to rent on a monthly basis. Phillips Direct will then supply updated printed inserts, delivered on the next business day, as often as the customer needs them. Totem Live, on the other hand, allows customers to have full control of their point-of-sale advertising within minutes rather than days. The Totem Live web portal enables customers to control their content from their offices, with updated messages being simply transmitted to individual totems via the Internet.
Both of these innovations demonstrate a new direction for Phillips Direct, where modern technology, when combined with the manufacturing expertise at Phillips, is already leading to really innovative products and solutions. “When I first joined Phillips Direct, I could immediately see the role modern technology could play in developing some of the already very effective products and I think these two Totem initiatives do offer customers something new and very different,” said Russell. More details can be found on the new Phillips Direct website, www.phillipsdirect.com, by telephoning 0845 4567 007 or by arranging a visit to the company’s new showroom in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

Use of instant-curing LED UV ink technology results in graphics that exit the printer dry and are immediately ready for finishing, significantly reducing production cycle times. In addition, UV-curable inks emit no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) minimising its environmental footprint. Mimaki’s white ink allows printing high quality, vibrant results on transparent and coloured media and three-layer, colour white colour printing is especially suitable for production of applications such as window graphics and backlit day and night signs. Moreover, white only printing is also an option for a stylish look or use on dark substrates. Mimaki Circulation Technology (MCT) maintains white ink print quality and reduces ink waste. A distinctive feature of the UJV55-320 is the provision of an inline, post-print LED lightbox that enables operators to check printing quality of backlit signage during the production run, simulating its installed look and reducing waste and time. The UJV55-320 also features twin roll printing capability, enabling printing on two separate rolls of the same media for simultaneous printing of two different jobs. Media rolls in twin
roll operation can range from 210 to 1,524mm in width, with the distance between the two rolls being automatically detected for faultless performance. Automatic detection of nozzle faults followed by cleaning and/or nozzle substitution work together with Mimaki’s RasterLink 6 software which features a patented dithering technique which, along with Mimaki Advanced Pass System (MAPS) for higher quality and reduced banding, delivers optimum print quality even at high print speeds and during longer print runs. “The UJV55-320 draws on Mimaki’s significant heritage in high quality graphics printing,” concludes Cole. www.hybridservices.co.uk

The Print Show News Update THE organisers of The Print Show are pleased to reveal that it has booked the entirety of The International Centre, Telford from October 11th to 13th 2017. “The first edition of The Print Show in 2015 honestly exceeded our wildest expectations, and we are very far ahead of where we were in February last year in terms of bookings, planning, and the implementation of our multi-channel marketing strategy,” explains Chris Davies, event director of The Print Show. He continues: “Our floorplan for 2016 is already getting very chocked for the bigger stands and we are having to consider taking more space, and on top of that a large number of our key exhibitors have been asking us for space in 2017 to make sure they can retain the most advantageous spots.” TELFORD BOUND — The Print Show 2017 is set to relocate from the NEC, where it will take place from October 11th to 13th this year, to the International Centre in Telford—just off the M54 to 10:11 thePage west PM_Services_January 2016_FINAL_Layout 1 01/03/2016 92 of Birmingham.
Davies explains how its early commitment to 2017 and a move to Telford has also been driven by a need to provide clarity to its exhibitors. Speaking candidly on the issue, Davies says: “I spoke out about what I felt was a very cynical move by IPEX to announce the return of their show the day before The Print Show 2015 opened its doors, moving from March to October and a year earlier than originally planned. “It was also the day after we had announced our commitment to shows
Come and see how the print industry’s only dedicated exhibition could help your business soar

in 2016 and 2017. The final piece of the puzzle is that IPEX has changed from being an internationally-focused event to being a nationally-focused one. So to sum up, its dates, model, location, and focus has changed and now is a direct mirror of what we put forward in 2014 and accomplished so well in 2015. “It can only leave you with one assumption, that it is a strategic move to try and block us from fulfilling our long-term promise to create a sustainable, annual,
UK -focused, and right-sized trade show dedicated to celebrating UK commercial print and providing it with an annual economic kick-starter.” Davies concludes: “Without a slot open at the NEC in 2017 we embarked on a round the UK tour of exhibition venues and ironically ended up 20 minutes up the road from where we started at what is an excellent, fresh, modern, and purpose-designed 13,000sq m site that will be a great host for us. “Our feeling was that if IPEX remained an international show, run at its normal time and every three years, then there was more than enough room for two events in an industry as large as ours. “Its decision to clash with our dates and focus will no doubt cause a lot of talk and speculation, but all we will continue to do is keep our heads down, work hard, and run a show that we feel the UK commercial print industry has needed for a very long time.” Email rob@theprintshow.co.uk or for more information visit www.theprintshow.com

Big, Bold, Brash and Busy Martin Christie visited The Photography Show at the NEC at the end of March and it delivered what it promised. Big, bold, brash and busy. Even visiting on the Monday of four days to avoid the weekend crush, the place was buzzing mid morning, and the extended queue for the cloakroom showed that even the hall management were surprised at the attendance..…
T
HERE WAS ENOUGH interest to keep most visitors, including me, circulating for the full day to be sure not to miss any unexpected treasure or bargain. And there were plenty of those. Although it’s a show about photography, the wide options that have introduced a digital lens to many more gadgets than cameras alone, means the exhibition now hosts a fantastic diversity of products and displays. Where else would you see a man with a virtual reality mask passing a stand where they were arranging a beautiful display of flowers? The world of imaging has almost gone full circle, with the relentless progress of technology pushing
the latest novelty at one end, and a desire to retain something more simple and natural at the other. The modern world of megapixels rubs shoulders with the humble Polaroid, and there is still a place for film, and devices that don’t consume enormous amounts of battery energy and processing power.
Another consideration is the very lifespan of images, when so many are both instantly captured and potentially discarded or lost. It’s accepted that the vast majority of casual snaps will not be a great loss to anybody, but there are more precious memories, the very special parts of people’s lives, that once would have been preserved in print, but which now risk disappearing in the black hole of cyber space. Until someone invents a better alternative, printing will not go out of fashion, at least for the important things in life, so it was reassuring to see that far from being a minor accessory, print and all things related, was still a major presence. Printer developments, because they involve such basic

hardware, are by their nature more pedestrian than software and other purely electronic evolutions. But the progress is there, as is the demand, which is why all of the big brands in the print trade felt their need to have a foot on the floor at the NEC. As one exhibitor explained, while it is sometimes difficult to quantify the actual value of attendance, in relation to the cost, the penalty for not being there is the danger of someone else stepping into your place in the market. Welcome to the piranha club, as someone else said of another close packed industry. Canon were back with a vengeance, competing for the skyline with Fujifilm as to who could build the highest viewing deck. Nikon were quietly confident their new range of pro and semi professional DSLRs would be market leaders in 2016. And Epson were pretty well everywhere in evidence, as well as their own stand, reflecting they have a pretty strong hold on the photomarket from large format to dry mini labs. The old names, like Kodak and Ilford still have a toe hold, but the days of dominance of the old school players have long gone. One of the more curious exhibitors appeared to be Ricoh, previously a big player in digital print, their rather stark but spacious stand seemed to lack direction, despite featuring the highly regarded Pentax range of cameras. There was a curious 360 degree camera attached to a laptop, and a large format solvent printer that looked like a Mimaki with a Ricoh badge. In comparison, most stands had gone to great lengths to fill the valuable space with goodies, and things that would attract and inform the visitor and potential customer. The aforementioned flower display was courtesy of Black Magic Design who produce top end digital video cameras of broadcast quality. An original way of combining hi-tech with real life colour and accurate reproduction. There were even more soft goods on display for baby photographers with lots of cute coloured cuddly knitwear to pose the little tots with, and it’s
vivid-online.com
interesting to reflect that though another exhibitor was showing a green screen background, which you could take out digitally and replace with any alternative, it’s still real life props and hues that are preferred. There was activity around every corner, although the Selfie wall was not such an attraction as the organisers might have expected. There were lots of demonstrations of lighting techniques, and stage shows, and software gurus were in their element illustrating editing technique. You could be buzzed by a drone, or even turned into a three dimensional replica, albeit a bit smaller than actual size. Then there were the more traditional hand skills of trimming and mounting, so the cutting of masks, framing and the like has yet to be replaced by some intelligent machine. Among the most interesting software debutants were Affinity, launching a modestly priced photo editing package available for Windows. A threat to Adobe’s dominance? Perhaps not to the total Creative Suite package, but for those who want an affordable but still professional image processor, compatible with all file formats, it’s certainly worth a look. I’ll review the beta version when it becomes available. And of course there were the bargains. I did try and keep my hands in my pockets, but a 32GB SD card for just £8 had to be snatched at. Then, keeping my feet in both camps, I bought some 35mm film and chemicals from Ilford. My plan is to do a not very scientific comparison between film, digitally scanned, and a digital camera image. With the megapixel count of current DSLR models seemingly stabilised at around 24 MP, the figure generally regarded as a 35mm equivalent, it will be just interesting to see how the two compare. Whether it’s an issue with large sensors, processing power or storage, a temporary pixel ceiling seems to have been created. I shall see if I can shed a little light through it.

PEFC FSC – What’s the Difference?
THE Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), has published a new brochure, ‘Promoting Sustainable Forest Management around the World: PEFC & FSC’, which aims to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the differences and similarities between PEFC’s sustainable forest management certification system, and The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) programme. Worldwide there are two internationally recognised certification systems, PEFC and FSC, and the new brochure explains the origins of both certification systems, how they came into being, and also helps to clearly explain each of the standards and their definitions in practical terminology and easily understandable language. The PEFC and FSC labels appear on a wide range of certified forest products around the world. These labels enable consumers to recognise and distinguish products and packaging made from responsibly-sourced materials. The brochure explains that by opting for certification, be it PEFC or FSC, companies are demonstrating their commitment to a sustainable future for the worlds forests. PEFC, as the world’s leading forest certification system, has certified more than 260 million hectares of forests to PEFC’s internationally recognised Sustainability Benchmarks, supplying more than 16,000 Chain of Custody certified companies with responsibly sourced timber and wood products, such as those used in producing fibre-based paper products such as packaging. PEFC has been working hard with stakeholders to spread the message of sustainable forest management, in order to support and promote the expansion of forest certification and help to grow the demand for certified forest products. Commenting on the new sustainable forest management promotional brochure, Alun Watkins, who heads up PEFC in the UK said, “We are often asked about the similarities and differences between the two global forest management certification schemes. This publication aims to help answer these questions and we hope that it will provide a useful resource to both Chain of Custody certified companies, and those specifying certified products in their corporate procurement policies, such as retailers and brand owners.” Copies of the brochure can be downloaded from the PEFC website: www.pefc.co.uk/publications
PEFC Strengthens Board
THE Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), has announced the appointment of a new industry specialist representative to its UK board. Anders Olsson has nearly 20 years industry experience in the global consumer packaging sector, and will be a valuable addition to the UK board, helping to support PEFC’s commitment to sustainable forest products. Anders is currently Commercial Director for the UK and Ireland and Strategic Account Lead with WestRock, the corrugated and consumer packaging specialist which was formed when MeadWestvaco merged with RockTenn in 2015.

Premier invests in new ‘green efficiency’ vehicles THE Premier Paper Group has recently invested in a number of new green efficiency vehicles with the latest driver technology, enhancing its fleet whilst at the same time underlining its green credentials. This latest investment in new fleet vehicles by Premier includes 12 new trucks, 2 x 12tonne and 10 x 18tonne vehicles, taking its total fleet to some 132 trucks across its regional branches. These latest additions to the Premier fleet are all Daf Euro 6 CF trucks, which are THE benchmark vehicles for long distance road transport, and have been designed for maximum transport efficiency. To meet the stringent Euro 6 emission requirements whilst ensuring the highest fuel efficiency, DAF has combined its advanced PACCAR Euro 6

Think Green, Think engines with various exhaust gas after treatment technologies; an SCR catalytic convertor and a diesel particulate filter. The design of the CF Euro 6 is extremely functional, providing optimum aerodynamics and maximum cooling to ensure low fuel consumption, providing a higher return per kilometre, and a lower environmental impact. Consideration was also given to driver ergonomics and safety systems including Lane departure warning systems (LDWS) and Adaptive cruise control (ACC) and Forward collision warning (FCW), with automatic braking using distance trackers. The new Daf Euro 6 CF trucks will be added to Premier’s regional branches at Dartford, Newton Abbot, Minworth, Leeds, Southampton, Bury St Edmunds, Washington and Glasgow. The Washington and Dartford branch trucks will all be sporting the new Premier livery (Trees make Paper, Paper makes Trees). Elsewhere, the Reel Paper division in Castle Donington is due to take delivery of their new fleet on the 1st March, which will include 2 x 26tonne and 3 x 18tonne trucks, all of which will be curtain sider vehicles and will be on new 2016 plates. Commenting on the new vehicle investment, Premier Paper Group Fleet Manager, Adrian Fraser, stated, “This represents a considerable investment by the company and demonstrates a firm commitment to providing the best possible customer service.” “We chose Ryder to supply our vehicles on full lease and maintenance agreements following lengthy negotiations, securing the best price deal to meet our business needs. Ryder’s value added service is second to none with effective communications throughout their organisation. This is important to us as we offer a reliable delivery service to customers right across the UK.” www.paper.co.uk
Prior to the formation of WestRock, Anders had worked as Commercial Director for the UK and Ireland with MeadWestvaco for just over three years, joining them in 2012 from packaging beverage specialist, Tetra Pak, where he held a variety of positions from 1997, most recently as Marketing and Key Account Director for Ireland. Welcoming Simon’s appointment, PEFC UK’s Chairman Ross Bradshaw commented “PEFC has long recognised the importance of having key stakeholder groups represented on its Governing Board. We are fortunate enough to be able to call upon the expertise of senior figures from a wide range of industry sectors and Ander’s appointment will ensure that the voice of the packaging sector is heard.” www.pefc.co.uk

Grow your business with T-shirt printing ARE you a quick print professional or copy shop looking for ways to expand your business? For many years, Dalesway Print Technology has been offering a range of solutions to get both existing and new businesses ready to take on the exciting market of screen printing onto t-shirts. At the recent Newtech event in Corby, Northamptonshire, the mid-range screen printing equipment from world-renowned manufacturer and original patent holder of the manual carousel, Vastex was very positively received by those in attendance. “You just cannot allow your business to stand still,” said Sam, one of the visitors to the Dalesway stand. “We are constantly looking for ways to grow and expand our offerings to avoid losing customers to the competition”. This concern is one shared by many. While subcontract work offers a temporary solution and at least keeps the customer on your books, it also leaves you as a supplier at the mercy of a provider who may not share the same dedication to customer care that your company does. Turnaround times
and costs can become problematic and make you uncompetitive in a market that can be quite demanding. The only way to have complete control is ultimately to bring a new service in-house. Selecting reliable equipment and ensuring staff are properly and thoroughly trained will ensure a smooth start and a new profit centre that will add real value to your business. With the Vastex range of screen printing equipment and training provided by internationally recognised American master screen printer, Douglas Grigar, Dalesway has it all covered. In addition, they also offer a range of high quality inks and screen printing supplies. Lancer Group International is one of the oldest manufacturers of inks and as a company, they are very focused on product safety. This means that the Lancer offering includes a range of ink that is completely PVC free, while retaining the ease of use of traditional Plastisol. Nike has approved the Evolution range of ink by Lancer for use on their products and
importantly, the Evolution range is also Oeko-Tex 100 compliant. T-shirt printing remains one of the most popular business add-ons. The reasons are clear – T-shirts not only make great promotional giveaways that publicise the name of a company or event far and wide, but they are also essential workwear and probably one of the most popular items of clothing in many a wardrobe. You are invited to discuss the opportunities. Dalesway Print Technology on 0845 224 1204 or visit: www.dalesway.co.uk.

OKI Pro Series Special Event Starter
Last month QPP was invited to the Velmex showroom in Mitcham for demonstrations on the latest OKI professional printer range including the fantastic five colour OKI spot varnish and white printers.
T
HE INFORMATIVE BRIEF overview started with the PRO 9541 + clear or white toner device then the new PRO 9542 with permanent white. The future of digital printing is indeed... BRILLIANT! OKI takes graphic arts printing one step further with the Pro9541dn and Pro9542dn. These A3 digital LED printers offer the unique option of printing with a fifth colour. It is always a pleasure to catch up with what is new for our quick print pros with OKI marketing manager Andrew Hall, who introduced Maureen and me to his colleague Bhupinder Bharat who heads up the Graphics Arts business development team and our host at Velmex, the professional print specialist, Daniel Judge. After a quick print dual to check the authenticity of job descriptions we are pleased to now refer to our printer friendly team as the Three Marketeers. Maureen’s print probing questions were excellently met when we got our breath back after drooling over the magnificent print samples. Value added print will sell itself when presented this way. Quality, low volume, high margin print is the home of all quick print pros. Maureen is keen to invest in her own Pro9541dn as we can both see the potential for adding value to our customers print with both white and clear printing. Well worth our trip up north! In particular the ultra violet security printing will win new short run business that was ‘pre OKI Pro series’, impossible. This new profit centre will deliver a quick ROI as well as attracting new quality driven larger print runs for brochures and posters on ‘6-page A4’.
CASE STUDY IN PROGRESS We will focus on different print products over the next issues, white and clear print on menus and brochures, variable data on invites and vouchers. The addition of foil etc. from OKI partners will also add interest to the 6600 front line quick print businesses, let alone number plates and packaging. Future reports will feature the OKI Academy and Antalis B2B training; plus Daniel’s ‘not just concept
proofing’ drive, as prototyping with the highest quality can now deliver the opportunity to market the following print runs through our print shops. Prices and service options will be confirmed in the new financial year next issue; with an on-demand service offering a minimum of one, with no set up charge, we can get back to a retail £pound plus copy. GOING TO THE DISCO Husband takes the wife to a disco. There’s a guy on the dance floor break dancing, moonwalking, back flips, the works. The wife turns to her husband and says, “See that guy? 25 years ago he proposed to me and I turned him down.” Husband says, “Looks like he’s still celebrating!”
BAH HUMBUG After a talking sheepdog gets all the sheep in the pen, he reports back to the farmer: “All 40 accounted for.” “But I only have 36 sheep,” says the farmer. “I know,” says the sheepdog. “But I rounded them up.”
THE CURSE An old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a “Curse” he has been living with for the last 40 years. The Wizard says “Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the curse on you.” The old man says without hesitation, “I now pronounce you man and wife.”
NOT ANOTHER GENIE IN A BOTTLE A gentleman is sitting on a deserted beach watching the sunset when he notices something half buried in the sand. He pulls it out and sees that it is a heavy, jewel encrusted bottle. As he brushes off the sand, the bottle begins to shake and emit various coloured clouds of smoke, then... POOF! A Genie appears from out of the bottle (whatever next?!) The Genie lavishes praise on the man, regales him with his story, and finally gets around to the ‘you have three wishes’ part of the tale. So the guy thinks about it for a while and says “I have always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I am afraid to fly and afraid to go on a boat, so for my first wish I want a motorway from here to Hawaii”. The Genie at first is amazed at the character of the man and ask instead if he would not want “all the money... fame... glory... vast amounts of property... yadda yadda. Nope, wish one is for the motorway. The Genie tells him that doing something like that borders almost on the impossible. The time, resources, and energy required to fulfil such a wish would most likely leave the Genie drained for thousands of years... is there something else, anything — even wishing for more wishes — that he might want? The man again pauses and thinks for a while then says “Well, I have
always wanted to understand women” The Genie replies, “So this motorway, did you want three lanes or four”?
HEAD GEAR A bloke steps onto a bus in the middle of Birmingham and the driver asks where he wants to go. ‘Short back and sides please.’ says the bloke ‘No, no,’ says the driver, ‘I want to know where you’re going.’ ‘Cut and blow dry please.’ replies our hero. ‘Are you taking the mickey?’ says the driver. ‘Tell me where you’re going!’ ‘A light perm with blonde highlights please.’ says the bloke, smiling at the driver. By now the driver has had enough. ‘Look mate, either state your destination or you can get off my flippin’ bus!’ ‘Oh, sorry,’ replies the passenger, ‘I only speak hairdo.’
YET ANOTHER GENIE A copier company customer care advisor sits in his office and out of boredom, decides to see what’s in his old filing cabinet. He pokes through the contents and comes across an old brass lamp. “This will look nice on my mantelpiece,” he decides, and takes it home with him. While polishing the lamp, a genie appears and grants him three wishes. “I wish for an ice cold beer right now!” He gets his beer and drinks it. Now that he can think more clearly, he states his second wish. “I wish to be on an island where beautiful women reside.” Suddenly he is on an island with gorgeous females eyeing him lustfully. He tells the genie his third and last wish: “I wish I’d never have to work ever again.” POOF! He’s back in his copier company customer care advisory office. A copier sales guy buys a ticket and wins the lottery jackpot. He goes to the post office to claim it and the man verifies his ticket number. The salesman says, “I want my £5 million.” The man replied, “No, sir. It doesn’t work that way. We give you a million today and then you’ll get the rest spread out for the next five years.” The salesman said, “Oh, no. I want all my money right now! I won it and I want it.” Again, the man explains that he would only get a million that day and the rest during the next five years. The salesman, furious with the man, screams out, “Look, I want my money! If you’re not going to give me my £5 million right now, then I want my £2.50 back!”
MIDLIFE CRISIS AVOIDED After 25 years of marriage, I took a look at my wife one day and said, “Honey, 25 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10 inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 25 year old sexy chick. Now, we have a nice house, nice car, big bed and plasma screen TV, but I’m sleeping with a 50 year old woman. It seems to me that you are not holding up your side of things.” My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 25 year old sexy chick and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, and sleeping on a sofa bed. Aren’t older women great? They really know to how solve your midlife crisis.
DOH BALL An angry customer and an apologetic Domino’s Pizza: Customer: Yo, I ordered a pizza and it came with no toppings on it or anything, Its just plain bread! Domino’s: We’re extremely sorry to hear about this. Customer (minutes later): Never mind, I opened the pizza upside down!
MORAL OF THE STORY One day at the end of class, little Johnny’s teacher asks the class to go home and think of a story to be concluded with the moral of that story. The following day the teacher asks for the first volunteer to tell their story. Little Suzy raises her hand. “My dad owns a farm and every Sunday we load the chicken eggs on the truck and drive into town to sell them at the market. Well, one Sunday we hit a big bump and all the eggs flew out of the basket and onto the road.” When the teacher asked for the moral of the story, Suzy replied, “Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket.” Little Lucy went next. “My dad owns a farm too. Every weekend we take the chicken eggs and put them in the incubator. Last weekend only eight of the 12 eggs hatched.” Again, the teacher asked for the moral of the story. Lucy replied, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” Next up was little Johnny. “My Granddad fought in the Second World War, and his plane was shot down over enemy territory. He jumped out before it crashed but could only take a case of beer, a
machine gun and a machete. On the way down, he drank the case of beer. Then he landed right in the middle of 100 enemy soldiers. He shot 70 with his machine gun, but then he ran out of bullets! So he pulled out his machete and killed 20 more. Then the blade on his machete broke, so he killed the last ten with his bare hands.” The teacher looked a little shocked. After clearing her throat, she asked what possible moral there could be to this story. “Well,” Johnny replied, “Don’t mess with Granddad when he’s been drinking.”
BEST ADVICE Son: Dad, I want to get married. Father: First, tell me you’re sorry. Son: For what? Father: Say sorry. Son: But for what? What did I do? Father: Just say sorry. Son: But... what have I done wrong? Father: Say sorry! Son: WHY? Father: Say sorry!! Son: Please, just tell me why? Father: Say sorry!!! Son: OK, Dad... I’m sorry! Father: There! You’re finished training. When you learn to say sorry for no reason at all, then you’re ready to get married!
MEET THE WIFE A young man excitedly tells his mother he’s fallen in love and that he is going to get married. He says, “Just for fun, Mum, I’m going to bring over three girls and you try and guess which one I’m going to marry.” The mother agrees. The next day, he brings three women into the house and sits them down on the couch and they chat for a while. He then says, “Okay Mum, guess which one I’m going to marry.” She immediately replies, “The one on the right.” “That’s amazing, Mum. You’re right. How did you know?” The mother replies, “I don’t like her.”
CLEVER PRINTER A doctor and a printer fell in love with the same girl. The doctor gave her a rose daily and the printer gave the girl an apple. The girl got confused and asked the printer, “There is a meaning in giving roses when in love. Why are you giving me an apple?” The printer answered: Because, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”
SEAGULLS BY THE SEA Q: Why do seagulls live by the sea? A: Because if they lived by the bay, they would be bagels.

KEN’S LAST REQUEST... Ken was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully. “Promise to fulfil my last request, Cindy,” he said. “Of course, Ken,” his wife said softly. “Six months after I die,” he said, “I want you to marry Tim.” “But I thought you hated Tim,” she said. With his last breathe, Ken said, “I do!”
AMERICAN CLAIM CULTURE This actually took place in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2015. A lawyer purchased a box of twenty four very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost ‘in a series of small fires.’ The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued and WON! Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable ‘fire’ and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars that perished in the ‘fires’. Immediately after the lawyer cashed the cheque, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of arson. With his own insurance claim
Has your son decided what he wants to be when he grows up?” I asked my friend.
and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine. This true story won first place in last year’s Criminal Lawyers Award contest, and we thought salesman were the biggest money grabbers!
PRINT EXHIBITION SLEEPOVER One day a printer, a designer, and a salesman all arrived at their hotel to find that there had been a mix-up with the bookings, and that there was only one room left for them to share. The manager explained that this room only had two beds, but that there was a barn at a neighbouring farm which the farmer, an old friend of his, would let one of them sleep in free of charge. They complained a bit, but since there was nowhere else to go, the printer graciously said he’d sleep in the barn. The designer and the salesman were just settling down to sleep in their room, when there was a knock on the door. It was the printer. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but there’s a pig in that barn and I feel uncomfortable about sharing the barn with it.” “No problem,” said the designer. “I’ll sleep out there instead.” So off he went to the barn, leaving the salesman and the printer to share the room. They were just settling down to sleep, when there was a knock on the door. It was the designer. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but there’s a cow in that barn and I feel uncomfortable about sharing the barn with it.” The salesman grudgingly agreed to give up his bed and stomped off to the barn, leaving the printer and the designer to share the room. The printer and the designer were just settling down to sleep, when there was a knock on the door. It was the cow and the pig!!!
“He wants to be a dustman,” he replied.
WORD WATCH If someone crashes his or her car on purpose, why is it still a car accident? If the weather man says “it’s a 50% chance of rain” does that mean he has no idea if its going to rain or not? If Sunday is the day of rest why do we have to get up early for church? When you snap your fingers, does the sound occur when your middle finger releases from your thumb, or when your middle finger hits the palm of your hand? Why are you IN a movie, but you’re ON TV? Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?
TELEPHONE CANVASSERS How many telemarketers does it take to change a light bulb? One, but they have to do it while you’re eating dinner!
PROBLEMS WITH THE BED A salesman went to a psychiatrist. “Doc,” he said, “I’ve got trouble. Every time I get into bed, I think there’s somebody under it. I get under the bed; I think there’s somebody on top of it. Top, under, top, under. You got to help me, I’m going crazy!” “Let me take care of it,” said the shrink. “Come to me three times a week, and I’ll cure your fears.” “How much do you charge?” “A hundred pounds per visit.” “I’ll sleep on it,” said the salesman. Six months later the doctor met the salesman on the street. “Why didn’t you ever come to see me again?” asked the psychiatrist. “For a hundred pounds a visit? A barman cured me for ten pounds.” “Is that so! How?” “He told me to cut the legs off the bed!”
“That’s an unusual ambition to have at such a young age.”
BLAME THE WIFE A man with a gun is robbing a bank. He asks one of the bank customers if he saw him rob the bank. The guy says he did. The robber then shoots him in the head killing him immediately. The robber then asks a couple nearest to him the same thing. The husband says that he didn’t but his wife did.
MR AND MRS RIGHT A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of cows, goats and sheep, the husband asked sarcastically, “Relatives of yours?” “Yep,” the wife replied, “in-laws!”
GENERATION X OFFICE LINGO Blamestorming: Sitting around in a group discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed, and who was responsible. Cube Farm: An office filled with cubicles. Ego Surfing: Scanning the net, databases, print media and so on, looking for references to one’s own name. Keyboard Plaque: The disgusting build up of dirt and crud found on computer keyboards. Starter Marriage: A short-lived first marriage that ends in divorce with no kids, no property and no regrets. Swiped Out: An ATM or credit card that has been rendered useless because the magnetic strip is worn away from extensive use. Treeware: Hacker slang for documentation or other printed material. Xerox Subsidy: Euphemism for swiping free photocopies from one’s workplace.
“Not really. He thinks that dustmen only work on Tuesdays.”
