Belle Design & Print’s Fresh Production Following its move to new premises, Belle Design & Print has chosen a Horizon SPF/ FC-200A stitch/fold/trim line from Intelligent Finishing Systems to support highly flexible print production. The Salford family-run business was established in 1991 and has recently moved into newly constructed, bigger premises following flooding at the previous site. The change of location has created the opportunity to take a fresh approach to print production. Helen Docherty, a director, explains: “We were able to design the factory layout to our own specification and with the extra space, create an efficient workflow’’. The Horizon SPF/FC200A was chosen to support the emphasis on new services says Helen: “We had an old Horizon collator so wanted something that could produce the finished item in one process. We visited a local printer and saw the machine in operation
and then understood the range of sizes and materials the SPF/FC200A could handle, which has allowed us to add more services to our portfolio. It also enables fast turnaround, short run, flexible production’’. She continues: “We liked the Horizon because of its ease of use and capability to be set up at the touch of a button. We have one particular job producing slimline diaries and much of it was hand finished. This was time consuming but is now easier, much faster and we have seen clear benefits so are looking at what else we can offer. As for return on investment she states: “As our business grows and to remain competitive and efficient in a difficult economic climate, we regarded this a strategic purchase to give us a broader capability.’’ The 4,500bph JDF-ready Horizon SPF/FC200A features a 200-programme job memory storage for instant recall, an icon-based touch-
screen for job set-up and a 10-station VACTurbo 1000 PowerCollator. www.ifsl.uk.com
Aspiring Superbike Champion joins Print Industry Bike-mad Liam Delves from Stechford has joined Signarama Birmingham South in Solihull as an apprentice. The 16-year-old finished fourth in last year’s Hel Performance Motorstar British Championship and has his sights set on becoming the 2017 champion in this British Superbike Championship class for up and coming superbike racers. Competing at such a high level doesn’t come cheap which is why Liam got a job with the Hobbs Moat Road based signs centre to help fund his £40,000 a year hobby. In addition to giving him on the job training Signarama Birmingham South owners Tracy and Jeremy Andrews are also fully supportive of his racing schedule. The British Superbikes Championship calendar is on the office wall and they will be giving him time off on Thursdays and Fridays during the season to attend races all over the UK and in Holland. Said Liam: “I am really enjoying working here particularly the graphic design side of sign making. It’s very satisfying to be able to see a job right through from design to production and then handing the finished item to the customer. “It’s not every boss who would give an employee 20 days off to take part in sport and I am very grateful to Signarama for being so flexible. I’ve been racing bikes since I was five and my burning ambition is to win the British Super Bike Championship. “My grandad used to sit me on his bike when I was tiny and I got my first battery powered moto bike when I was three. It kept running out of battery though and I would cry. Mum and Dad got fed up carrying me and the bike home so I soon progressed to a motorised version.” In addition to giving Liam a generous holiday entitlement Signarama is also producing the decals for the bike free of charge for him. The sign centre has supplied decals for cars taking part on the Le Mans 24 Race in the past but this will be their first foray into making motorbike graphics. Director Tracy Andrews explained: “My husband Jeremy is also a mad keen biker which is probably one of the main reasons we took Liam on! We advertised for a production assistant and Liam applied for the position. He already had a Saturday job working in a print shop so had some experience in design and production. He’s settled in well and is a quick learner. “We are impressed by Liam’s drive and determination to become champion and want to support him as much as we can. As producing vehicle graphics is one of the services
we provide it makes sense for us to do Liam’s new decals as he needs them. Although I’m not at all into bikes I know Jeremy and the rest of the team here will be going to cheer Liam on at races held locally.” For more information about Liam Delves British Super Bike racing visit www.liamdelvesracing.com www.signarama-birminghamsouth.co.uk

Mimaki JFX200 power from 0-600 in 3 weeks! In automotive terms, 0-600 in three weeks might seem somewhat irrelevant, but for one Northamptonshire-based exhibition and display contractors, that sort of performance proved to be just what was needed to transform their business fortunes, following their investment in a Mimaki JFX200-2513 flatbed LED UV printer. From its base in Croughton, Northants, Modex Exhibitions produces bespoke, modular exhibition stands and displays for clients as diverse as BAE Systems, Nat West and Nottinghamshire County Council. Established in 2003, the company has developed a simple but highly effective business model which provides clients with a uniquely designed ‘one-stop’ modular exhibition display package, which includes; graphics, flooring, furniture, lighting, installation and removal, all at a fixed price per square metre. Director Rob Brooks takes up the story; “Modex Exhibitions is well established as a designer and builder of high quality, custom-modular exhibition stands, delivered at a realistic price. We undertake virtually everything in-house, but the one thing that historically we’ve never had the capability for was the actual print of the graphics panels, which we had always outsourced.” Without any prior knowledge or experience in print operations, it was a chance meeting with the team from Preston-based Mimaki re-seller Granthams, which led to a demonstration of the JFX200 at UK Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services in Crewe. “Within 20 minutes of the demonstration starting I was convinced that this machine was just what we needed to become almost totally self-sufficient as a business – the speed and print quality just blew us away!” continues Brooks, who was so impressed he didn’t really feel the need to check out the competition. Placing an order immediately, the combined efforts of the teams at Granthams and Hybrid Services saw the machine duly installed by midJanuary and starting to ‘earn its keep’ within days. The new JFX200 has quickly established itself as a really important production tool for the business, making a significant contribution to the production of 30 to 40 display stands per month. As Brooks explains; “From a standing start at installation, within the first three weeks we had successfully printed more than 600 8’ x 4’ rigid Foamex display boards... all without a single problem!”
The Mimaki JFX200-2513 Flatbed LED UV Printer offers a choice of inks, including white and clear, providing unlimited creative opportunities. With the capability to print to a wide range of substrates, the JFX200 maximises productivity by using industry standard (8’ x 4’) media on its 2.5m x 1.3m bed. In addition to the obvious performance talents of the JFX200, the new machine has garnered much praise within the business for the ease of use that it offers, which has proved to be a very significant benefit for a business with no previous print experience. As Brooks himself rather self-effacingly comments; “Investing in the Mimaki has turned us from Luddites to high volume printers in a few weeks ... and we’ve got the photos to prove it!” www.modexuk.com www.granthams.co.uk
Pelican Print invests in HP Indigo 5900 Pelican Print has installed its first HP Indigo 5900 Digital Press, as it expands its digital offering following eight years using an HP Indigo 5000 Digital Press. “We chose to invest in HP Indigo technology again principally because our customers are used to the excellent quality of work we produce,” says Pelican Print Managing Director, Scott Brookes, “We have many customers who don’t just buy on price. They buy on the quality, reliability and service we provide as well as the usual quick turnaround the industry currently demands.” The HP Indigo 5900 delivers increased quality and reliability, printing at 90 colour pages per minute for more than two million colour pages per month, it provides exceptional productivity for medium-volume printers. Like all HP Indigo presses, the unique digital offset process combined with HP Indigo’s liquid ElectroInk technology results in digital prints that are of the highest quality. Pelican Print also elected to trial HP’s EPM (Enhanced Productivity Mode) software before purchase, for a further productivity boost. “Following our tests with the EPM software we are confident we can use the facility on a high percentage of our work without any noticeable compromise on image quality.
It means we can use the press to maximum capacity, deliver on quality and secure healthy profit margins on work produced on the press,” explains Brookes. A further benefit to Pelican Print, who offer a full range of print services, including litho, digital and large format printing, is the wide range of substrates available with the HP Indigo 5900 Digital Press. Brookes adds, “So we can broaden our offering even further, to include things like covers or business cards on thicker stock.” www.hp.com

Hackett campaign displays Canon digital print Canon Europe showed visitors to Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017 how its end-to-end production solutions enable closely integrated, multichannel customer marketing campaigns that fully exploit the potential of variable data printing. Visitors saw elements of a hypothetical customer nurture campaign created by Canon using photographic imagery from men’s clothing brand Hackett. The premise of the campaign is the promotion of Aston Martin by Hackett, a new co-branded capsule clothing collection to coincide with the launch of the Aston Martin DB11 sports car. Using stunning images and video captured on Canon EOS and Cinema EOS equipment, and proofed on the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO4000, the campaign comprised four individual pieces of marketing collateral: • an A5 ‘look book’, printed on the imagePRESS C10000VP production toner press. The’ look book’ is designed to capture the attention of fashion journalists worldwide. • a VIP version of the ‘look book’, personalised
and case-bound in A3 format. This was also produced on the imagePRESS C10000VP, intended for use in Hackett stores worldwide, enabling customers to browse the extended range. • a promotional one-piece self-mailer, produced on the new Canon ProStream continuous feed inkjet press. The image-intensive mailer is personalised based on recipients’ buying habits, with an invitation to go instore or online to experience the collection in person. • a personalised postcard as a follow-up to the mailer, produced on the Océ VarioPrint i300 sheetfed inkjet press.
Peter Wolff, Senior Director, Customer Group Commercial Printer and Production CRD, Canon Europe, explains the intention behind the project: “We wanted to tangibly demonstrate how brands and their print service providers can take advantage of the range of digital printing technologies available today. Digital innovation, supported by increasingly sophisticated analysis of marketing data, is enabling brand owners to differentiate themselves through highly personalised campaigns that reflect individual customer preferences. This level of targeting measurably increases response and brand engagement and motivates customers to go online or instore to purchase. Peter Wolff concludes: “The output quality now achievable with inkjet technology on standard substrates means that digital printing today provides a commercially attractive marketing solution, even for exclusive lifestyle brands for whom print quality and vivid colour reproduction are critical considerations.” www.canon.co.uk www.canon.ie
Optichrome invests in two Versafire CP presses Woking printer Optichrome has installed two high speed Versafire CP digital presses to provide the volume required by this busy operation. “Reliability was key to our choice because of the nature of the work we do,” says John Heywood, managing director. “Virtually all our digital work is heavily personalised financial and pension scheme reporting which can involve many thousands of multi-page brochures. We cannot fail to meet agreed and legally binding postage and delivery dates so by investing in two identical machines we can run the same job and know that the quality will match. Our load balancing is simplified.” Optichrome undertook a thorough investigation before making this buying decision. They wanted a machine that was robust, easy to use and could produce to very high quality. Work was tested at Heidelberg’s Brentford showroom and there was a user site visit to see how the Versafire performed in a production environment. “The machines are only just in but early indications are that the equipment is excellent. Our sales team are very impressed and keen to show the results to both existing and potential clients,” says Mr Heywood. “We love the image quality, long sheet capability, robust build, uptime and speed.” Operators have easily adapted to the Versafire CP technology,
helped by the fact the company is continuing with the Hyper RIP that they had before. Heidelberg provided a day’s training on installation. “Now we are able to migrate more work from litho to digital (which we couldn’t even consider before). The improved reliability has given us a big confidence boost and now we can quote short turnround times with confidence. The quality is improved, especially tints and flat colours,” says Mr Heywood. Optichrome has been in business since 1963. It handles a wide range of printed products and run lengths but it also offers other marketing tools including e-mail marketing and web sites. It serves a broad geographical base, primarily in London and the south although it can take jobs from around the UK. Two years ago it bought a Speedmaster XL 75-5+L which it runs using Heidelberg’s Saphira consumables. The company has run digital printing equipment for 15 years but says this installation and early experience has been the best to date. www.heidelberg.com

The BPIF celebrate National Apprentice Week The BPIF celebrated National Apprenticeship Week with a visit to Jaguar Land Rover, a Letterpress workshop and the second edition of the Apprentice Newsletter On 6 March, the BPIF took a number of their apprentices to Jaguar Land Rover as part of National Apprentice Week. The apprentices were hosted in the company’s Education Business Partnership Centre, a purposebuilt facility for education in the middle of an industrial environment. The day consisted of a behind the scenes guided tour of the cutting edge facility by a member of their staff, this provided the apprentices with an insight into Jaguar Land Rover’s state of the art manufacturing site. They also took part in a variety of learning activities focused around lean manufacturing processes. The day was enjoyed by all and was a great opportunity for the apprentices to see how another manufacturing industry operates and take away what they had learnt back to their own companies. Alice Murray of Hunts and a BPIF Apprentice Council member commented, ‘For National Apprenticeship Week, I was lucky enough to go along and visit Jaguar Land
Rover. This was a great opportunity to see how the UK’s largest car manufacturer operates! I really enjoyed learning and seeing how a different type of business from the one I work in operates and how the processes involved in car manufacturing can relate similarly to the way the printing industry operates. The tour around the factory was a brilliant experience and the team building exercises were great fun!’ Another apprentice who took part in the day, Matthew Edgerton of Precision Colour Printing said, ‘I think the experience at Jaguar Land Rover has opened my eyes to other areas of
manufacturing and lean processes, I hope some of the ideas I gathered from Jaguar Land Rover can be used at PCP’. The day was organised by the BPIF to celebrate National Apprentice Week. The BPIF offers a wide variety of apprenticeship courses. In addition a group of BPIF Apprentices partook in a letter press workshop at St Brides on the 7 March and the Apprentice Council produced and mailed the second edition of the Apprentice Newsletter, which was kindly printed by Ian Wilton at Oxuniprint. www.britishprint.com
Over 500 miles of Kall Kwik Business Cards In thirty-five years of trading, Kall Kwik in Great Titchfield Street, London estimates it has produced over 10 million business cards. Placed end to end they would stretch from London to Aberdeen! To mark its 35th anniversary, Kall Kwik managing director Nigel Toplis popped in to the print and graphic design business to present owner Jeff Tang with a commemorative plaque and bottles of champagne. Mr Tang has been trading from the same premises since 1982 and now employs a team of five. In the past, he also owned two other successful Kall Kwik branches. Although print trends have changed over the years, business cards have remained a constant seller with large format posters running a close second. In 1982 photocopying and fax services were in high demand. Now Kall Kwik customers are looking for banners, posters and brochures – all of which are produced on the premises. Items that thirty years ago had to be ordered in and would take up to two weeks to arrive can now be run out in just a few minutes on Kall Kwik Great Titchfield Street’s own sophisticated digital equipment. Kall Kwik’s longest standing customer is the Royal College of Nursing which placed its first order for carbonless duplicate forms back in 1984. Other big name customers include the London Communications Agency, Estee Lauder and Perry Ellis. Looking back on over three decades of trading Mr Tang has many memories – but perhaps the funniest relates to a hapless delivery boy who hadn’t quite grasped the local geography. Explained Mr Tang: “Several years ago we had two branches just a seven minutes’ walk apart. We’d taken on a new youngster as a delivery boy and wondered why it was taking him so long to deliver goods between the two Kall Kwiks. It turned out that he had been taking a half hour tube journey because he hadn’t realised how physically close they were!” Staying in business for such a long time hasn’t been easy. Mr Tang’s biggest challenge was getting the business off the ground at the
beginning especially meeting bank payments. The company has been built on hard work and delivering a first-class service to every customer. The team once worked round the clock for four days to get out a last minute £30,000 order from a blue-chip customer. “It’s been the people who work here that have made our business such a continuing success,” said Mr Tang. “All of my employees are like family to me and it’s lovely that so many of them still pop in to say hello years later.” Looking to the future Kall Kwik Great Titchfield Street aims to grow the digital side of its business and selling web-based print services. There will always be a call for traditional print but as technology advances Mr Tang believes that an increasing proportion of business will be carried out online. To contact Kall Kwik Great Titchfield Street telephone 020 7631 4053 or email print@kk565.co.uk

Mimaki Tx300P-1800 Series improved textile print Mimaki has announced that its Tx300P-1800 and Tx300P-1800B direct-totextile printers have been updated, providing the capability to simultaneously load both textile pigment and sublimation inks. This enables the use of a single printer to print directly onto a much wider range of textiles without the need to swap out ink systems. This previously unavailable, newly developed technology represents a major breakthrough that will significantly improve productivity and increase flexibility for these Mimaki textile printers. Having identified demand for fast turnaround times as well as short and bespoke production runs by customers in the textile, fashion and apparel markets, Mimaki has now created the option to switch fabric types quickly and easily, by selecting the most appropriate ink system for each fabric with the enhanced system also providing valuable environmental benefits by the removal of water or steaming from the posttreatment process. Mimaki already offers five different ink types for textile printing, including sublimation dye ink, dispersion dye ink, textile pigment ink, reactive dye ink and acid dye ink. In the normal course of operation, one ink per printer must be selected. Textile print producers will now be able to use the two most popular ink types in one single printer. Both the Tx300P-1800 and Tx300P-1800B direct-to-textile printers will have the capability to simultaneously load TP400 textile pigment ink for cotton and hemp materials as well as Sb420 sublimation dye ink for polyester material. Since neither ink type generally requires steaming or washing in the post-treatment process, there is no need for a large operational space, huge volumes of water, or special expertise in handling the printed fabric. All that is required is the printer and colour fixing equipment, making these entry-level printers suitable for all. “This is a very exciting development for our textile print customers,” comments Stephen Woodall National Sales Manager – Textile & Apparel, for Hybrid Services Ltd, Mimaki’s exclusive UK and Ireland distributor. “Mimaki has listened carefully to feedback from this sector and understood the need for greater print production flexibility and productivity whilst still providing an affordable package coupled with a compact footprint. We are finding that these printers are increasingly in demand from professional design and educational environments, which in turn is likely to create even more momentum and interest in on-demand digital printing of textiles.” The Details — Mimaki’s TP400 textile pigment ink, which consists of solvent, pigment and binder agent, is fixed through heat without impairing the breathability and water
absorbency of the fabric; removing the need for large posttreatment equipment. These inks deliver beautiful print results on cotton and hemp materials and are recommended for interior fabrics, T-shirts and various other apparel applications. The Mimaki Sb420 sublimation dye ink is specifically designed for use with pre-treated polyesters. The colour is fixed using heat after printing and printing on polyester with these inks delivers excellent colour accuracy and reproduction. The Mimaki Tx300P-1800 printer can print directly onto almost any type of natural or man-made fabric and is ideally suited for thick and woven textiles. Its combination of affordable price, speed and high quality make it perfect for producing short runs or samples of customised or bespoke designs. The Mimaki Tx300P-1800B printer uses an innovative automated belt-fed conveyance system making it particularly effective for printing on modern stretchable materials. With the capability to print to a broad range of natural and man-made fabrics this machine is ideal for the production of fashion, clothing and soft furnishing materials. Mimaki expect the updated hybrid ink system for the Tx300P-1800 and Tx300P-1800B direct-to-textile printers to be commercially available in the summer of 2017. www.hybridservices.co.uk
New laminator boosts printers’ productivity Watkiss Automation the UK distributor for Italian finishing equipment manufacturer Mamo, is launching the new Plasti 350 XP laminator which boosts printers’ productivity with added automation and ease of use. Aimed at low to mid-volume applications, the Plasti 350 XP features a fully automatic bursting system for double sided lamination and a high pile suction feeder which enables unattended operation. An intuitive colour touch screen controls all operating parameters, giving the operator ease of use and precise control over functions like the overlap between each sheet. “This really is a set-up and go machine, designed for unattended operation” explains Watkiss Sales Director Paul Attew. “Responding to customer input, we have worked very closely with the manufacturer to introduce new features that make this laminator an attractive and very cost effective machine.
It combines performance, ease of use and an enhanced feature set at an affordable price.” Key features that make the Plasti 350 XP an attractive proposition for printers include: *Automatic high pile suction feeder for materials up to 400gsm with precise control to match the feed speed to the lamination speed – this keeps a constant gap, or a constant overlap, between the sheets. *Independent adjustable temperature of the two laminating rollers preserves the quality of back print in the case of single side lamination. *Wide diameter laminating rollers give consistent lamination adherence and quality even at maximum speed *All the settings and operations are controlled through one single touch screen control panel engineered to make the machine’s setting fast and easy. The Plasti 350 XP is available immediately
and has a UK RRP £13,500. Watkiss are offering demonstrations either in their showroom, or at customers for on-site demonstrations. www.watkiss.com

Canon announces Océ Colorado 1640 Canon is introducing the Océ Colorado 1640, the first 64” roll-to-roll wide format printer built on the new Canon UVgel technology. The UVgel technology has been developed by Canon to deliver improved productivity, matched with excellent output quality on a broad range of media for optimum applications. Working with the attributes of UVgel, the Océ Colorado 1640 has been engineered to the highest industrial standards to meet peak production and producing high volumes of wide format graphics within the short turnaround times demanded by clients. Breakthrough Productivity — with a top speed of 159 m2/hr for applications such as billboards or outdoor banners, the new Océ Colorado 1640 offers print service providers (PSPs) an unprecedented level of productivity. Even at the highest level of quality for close-up indoor applications, the printer operates at a speed of 40 m2/hr. Canon UVgel ink is instantly ‘pinned’ on contact with the substrate, resulting in a highly controlled and precisely positioned dot with minimal gain. By minimising ink spread and coalescence on the media, the required volume of ink can be printed in each pass, delivering rich, intense images at ultra high speed. Productivity is further boosted by the dual-roll configuration of the Océ Colorado 1640, which enables the PSP to switch between two types and sizes of media on the fly, for fast production of mixed applications. Excellent Quality — The Océ Colorado 1640 delivers excellent image quality and repeatability, print after print. The precise, instantly ‘pinned’ UVgel dot produces sharp images with minimal dot gain and virtually no satellites, while the stable, highly controlled dot ensures superb colour consistency from swathe to swathe. Canon UVgel printheads incorporate patented continuous nozzle monitoring using acoustic sampling to detect and correct any underperforming nozzles, virtually eliminating white lines. This allows for
unattended printing and reduces wasted prints. Broad Application Range — The Océ Colorado 1640 is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, including posters, banners, signage, POS, billboards, window graphics, decals and bespoke wall coverings. UVgel is a low-heat process using LED curing, ensuring minimal media distortion and extending the range of printable substrates, including thin and heat-sensitive media. Furthermore, UVgel ink contains no water, which significantly reduces media swelling, improving dimensional consistency. UVgel ink reproduces a large colour gamut comparable with eco solvent inks, but with the environmental and safety profile of latex and UV inks. UVgel prints are durable, colour-fast and highly resistant to the stresses typical of outdoor applications, while the odourless and VCL-free prints satisfy the highest environmental standards for sensitive indoor uses. The Océ Colorado 1640 printer will have its first public presentation FESPA 2017, in Hamburg, 8 -12 May 2017. www.canon-europe.com

New Canon C650 imagePRESS Canon is extending its imagePRESS portfolio with the introduction of the C650. The new 65 page per minute model is designed to offer customers an entry point into producing more specialist applications previously restricted by finishing capabilities and workflow integration. Built on the same platform engine as the imagePRESS C850 Series (launched in September 2016), the C650 offers the same combination of consistently high print quality, performance and reliability as the other models in the range, while also incorporating more professional finishing options from the C850 series into the 65 ppm segment. Peter Wolff, Senior Director, Customer Group Commercial Printer and Production CRD, Canon Europe, comments: “For corporate print departments and smaller progressive print service providers (PSPs) who have traditionally focused on less complex document applications, the imagePRESS C650 presents an opportunity to diversify into higher-end, professionally finished applications such as catalogues, booklets and direct mail, as well as high-impact marketing collateral including duplex banner
and envelopes . “For this type of customer, brand consistency, colour management and creativity are also becoming increasingly important. These evolving needs called for an entry-level production device that can connect directly to other systems within the customer’s business, at a price point that makes these applications viable for them. With the imagePRESS C650 we have that solution,” added Wolff. Finishing options available on the imagePRESS C650 include a two-knife booklet trimmer, a paper folding unit, a document insertion unit, a booklet finisher, a multi hole punch including creasing and a staple finisher. The device also enables duplex banner printing, giving customers greater productivity when producing applications on long sheet media. “With the imagePRESS C650 we can enable quality-focused users the flexibility to start producing new applications, as well as improve their more traditional outputs,” commented Nick Klitsie, Senior Director Sales, Document Solutions. “This is a positive step forward for customers in this environment and, due to the finishing options available, it will certainly
Premier’s Double A The Premier Paper Group has announced that it has become a stockist of the Double A brand of office papers, which are produced and manufactured at the Alizay pulp and paper mill facility in Northern France. The Alizay mill has a combined pulp and paper production capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year. The Double A brand of office papers includes 75, 80, 90 and 100gsm weights in A4 and A3. Double A — Business, Premium, Colorprint and Presentation are now available throughout the UK from the Premier Paper Group Double A is a premium paper known for its high quality and superior performance. Double A’s high fibre content makes it the best copy paper for high-speed machines, with good runnability, printing sharpness and excellent smoothness, together with a high bright whiteness. Its smooth surface allows for good toner transfer, making copies as sharp as the original, whilst it smoothness provides a high quality touch providing effortless printing capabilities. Its bright, white appearance provides a high print contrast and also a resistance to fading. The opacity and excellent formation qualities of Double A are attributed to its high quality fibre content, with some 30m fibres per gram contained in its formation. This allows for double-sided use as well as a longer storage period thanks to its acid-free content. Having passed a ‘No Jam’ runnability test for the continuous copying of 100,000 sheets of Double A paper through a high-speed copying machine, when Double A states it has a ‘No Jam’ confirmation, it means it! Premier Paper has 30,000 tonnes of paper held throughout its branch network, offering some 5,500 different product items, from many of the world’s leading paper manufacturers, including the UK market’s widest selection of media for digital printing. pave the way for greater professional-standard application diversity.” “More opportunities to grow and diversify are moving into customers’ reach, either through the applications they can offer or through enhanced quality capabilities, both enabling them to expand their client base. It is important that we listen to the challenges customers face and work with them to meet these head on. This further development of the imagePRESS family is a perfect example of meeting specific customer needs by expanding the scope of already proven technology,” concluded Wolff. THE PRINT SHOW The Print Show shifts up a gear with a group of companies citing their success at these previous shows as their main reasons for exhibiting again at this year’s event.
[T]
aking place from October 11th to 13th at the International Centre in Telford, The Print Show 2017 promises to be bigger and better than ever. While a number of major companies will be exhibiting for the first time, a host of brands that were in attendance last year will also be returning. Amongst those to have confirmed their commitment to the show this year are B&R Moll, Exel Printing Machinery, Kluge International, Tharstern, The Magic Touch and Bluprint UK. B&R Moll is known across the industry for its wide range of finishing solutions, such as the Versa-Fold Regal Folder Gluer, which has a maximum linear speed of 130m/min and can handle products in sizes up to 762mm x 762mm.
Exel Printing Machinery is one of the leading suppliers of used printing kit in the UK and stocks technology from a number of major brands, such as Heidelberg, MBO, Ricoh and Polar. Both B&R Moll and Exel plan to bring heavy equipment to the show in October. Bill Jones, managing director of Exel, said that the company enjoyed the “buzz” of last year’s event and is hoping for similar response from visitors in October. “This will be our third year at The Print Show and following the good attendance and buzz last year, we have decided to continue this year, especially with the addition of the Used Machinery Area which is great for our sector of the industry,” Jones said. “We really enjoyed the atmosphere of this young show last year and look forward to it growing again this year. It was good to catch up with both new and old clients. We hope by having the addition of the new used machinery area at The Print Show in line with other major shows, it differentiates us from the manufacturers and new equipment suppliers and allows visitors to explore their used machinery options more readily.” Kluge International, a supplier of various kit for the finishing process, will return to the event after a successful appearance last year. Thomas Anderson, managing director of Kluge International and Eagle Europe, said that the show has proved to be a useful place to meet with customers and discuss the latest innovations at the company. “We have exhibited at The Print Show for the last two years and have found it a good place to meet new potential customers, as well as to catch up with our existing Kluge users,” Anderson says, adding: “The show is of a size that allows us to dedicate time to our clients. “We are, again, planning to have a Kluge EHD Foil Stamping, Embossing and Die Cutting platen press running in the Traditional Print Master classes area, to showcase the capabilities of our small-format press and what it can do for trade finishers, digital printers, as well as in a general
commercial print environment.” Meanwhile, Amanda Newman, marketing manager of management information (MIS) systems provider Tharstern, revealed that the firm will build on its success at the show last year by using the 2017 event to showcase its latest solution. Newman said: “Last year’s show was really successful for us and we got lots of visitors to our stand to talk about our MIS. We got to catch up with customers and show them our new modules and we also got to speak to new people too. “We’re using The Print Show 2017 to demonstrate our latest software release, Tharstern V6, which we’ll be releasing details of soon.” Elsewhere, Jim Nicol, managing director of The Magic Touch, also paid tribute to the company’s success at last year’s event, adding that plans are in place to show off a host of new and unique applications at the International Centre. He said: “The bottom line on the show is simple; we had such a good response within the Printer’s Bazaar section last year—which we will do again this year—but we also wanted to show how our affordable transfer technology is proving the perfect add-on to any print business. “With 25 years’ of experience, having pioneered the image transfer process, the plan is to show print companies how to understand the benefits of having better contact with existing and future customers by using targeted personalised products, which has always created a positive reaction from the recipients. This is creative and pro-active marketing, which, in our opinion, is better value than any cost per click. “We will have a host of new and unique applications planned for the show.” Robb Harman, managing director of Bluprint UK, also had positive things to say about his company’s experience at the show “There is a buzz and innovative drive within the UK printing world that we love being a part of and The Print Show exudes that through their fantastic team. “We found last year that The Print Show gave growing opportunity to continue relationships, and network, with other key players in the UK print industry in an active environment. “We hope to meet old friends and make new ones; finding like-minded people or understanding the barriers to quality printing is invaluable in business. While also aiming to inform and educate the industry on AMS Spectal UV, the best entry level series to Retrofit five- or six-colour presses with LED UV curing.”

Intec extends commitment
Epson confirms attendance DIGITAL PRINT HEAVYWEIGHT EPSON HAS BECOME THE LATEST MAJOR MANUFACTURER TO SIGN UP TO EXHIBIT. The third edition of The Print Show will take place at new venue the International Centre in Telford, known locally as the ‘Birthplace of Industry’. Epson is the latest major name to confirm its attendance and will operate from a 120sq m stand at the event. The manufacturer had a presence at both the 2015 and 2016 shows through value added reseller Colourbyte, which reported strong interest in Epson technology from visitors. Phil McMullin, UK sales manager Pro Graphics at Epson UK, said that the success of Colourbyte at previous editions of the show was a major factor in the company committing to its own stand for the first time, and also cited the event’s new venue in Telford as a key point for the manufacturer. “We attended the first two shows in a very successful partnership with Epson reseller Colourbyte, but given the new location at the Telford International Centre, and Epson’s long-standing manufacturing presence in Telford, as our main European ink plant is located in the town, we decided to maximise the opportunity by attending The Print Show 2017 as Epson,” McMullin said. He adds: “Colourbyte generated a huge number of sales leads from both the previous exhibitions, which they converted into numerous sales of Epson large-format printers, media and ink.” Although the event is still more than eight months away, McMullin said Epson already has a good idea of what it would like to achieve over the three days in October, revealing that the company will showcase its full range of SureColor Photo, Textile and Signage printing solutions from 24” to 64” in width. “We will be demonstrating a wide range of applications all targeted at the commercial printer and sign-maker showing how to enter new profitable markets and generate incremental business,” McMullin said, adding: “Needless to say, there will be some compelling show deals available for attendees who visit our stand. “The Print Show is a showcase for manufacturers and suppliers to communicate directly with print service providers, sharing the latest and greatest profit-making opportunities with them. We intend to have a number of product and technical staff on our stand to demonstrate how to produce stunning outputs, easily and cost-effectively.”
INTEC PRINTING SOLUTIONS HAS CONTINUED ITS SUPPORT OF THE PRINT SHOW BY SIGNING UP TO EXHIBIT AT THIS YEAR’S EVENT AS MORGANA REVEALED WHY IT HAS A HIGH DEGREE OF CONFIDENCE IN THE EVENT’S THIRD YEAR. Intec, which has taken one of the largest stands at the event, will be exhibiting for the third consecutive year and already has an idea of what it will showcase in terms of technology at the event. Visitors can see the new Intec CS3000 digital printer, as well as a new full-colour envelope printing system, a new label printing and finishing system, a label and packaging cutting system, the new range of specialty and premium effect, as well as the company’s security printing solutions. Ian Melville, Managing Director of Intec, said: “The Print Show is a great place for Intec to meet our UK dealers and also to meet existing and new clients to show off our latest technology. At each of the last two events, we have met some great people and as a result we have sold new Intec printing systems; as a manufacturer that is what it is ultimately all about. “The bottom line is that we are attending the Print Show in order to invite all of our UK dealers and customers to see the latest technology and products from Intec at a centrally located venue.” Melville was also quick to pay tribute to the impact that The Print Show has had on the industry since its introduction in 2015: “The UK print industry needs an annual forum, meeting place and exhibition for the UK suppliers to showcase and launch new products into the UK market. “Intec felt that this show has built some momentum in establishing itself as the annual event that the UK printing industry can attend with this being their third consecutive year. “As an international supplier we are finding that customers are far less inclined to travel overseas. That was the case in the past and so we tend to find that national events for the national market are more focused and a more intimate way of meeting and demonstrating products.”
Morgana ‘needs to be’ at The Print Show Morgana Systems have told QPP that they have confirmed it will be returning to The Print Show for the third consecutive year. The company took one of the larger stands at both the 2015 and 2016 event, and has opted for a similar strategy this year. Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, was keen to praise the ongoing efforts of the organising team for their commitment to improving The Print Show, adding that Morgana has felt the full benefits of this. Hillhouse said: “We have enjoyed two very successful events with The Print Show — it has put itself firmly on the exhibition map for the UK’s printing industry. All of that means that Morgana need to be there. “The attendance at the first two shows was excellent. The marketing of the event has been very thorough to date, so we are looking forward to another successful exhibition.” www.theprintshow.com

Brother UK boost sales at Newtech The Newtech series of local trade events is moving on to The Mercure Hotel, Haydock Liverpool on April 25th. Brother UK and their innovative Tape Creator printer has been a hit at the first three 2017 shows resulting in a sales boost from the events in Cheltenham, Southampton and Leeds. Mike Kelly, Head of Business Unit — Tape Creator, Brother UK said, “When looking at how to take our new Tape Creator printer to market, we found the Newtech events promoted online by the organisers. I visited the final event of 2016 to establish if it would be suitable. Based on the visitor profile and having discussed with the exhibitors how very successful the show was for them, it looked like an ideal platform to present the product. Consequently, we signed up for the first three events of 2017 with an option to extend to the
seven remaining events of the year. After just the first two events, I decided not only to book the remaining seven events of 2017 but the first three of 2018 also. We have a strong show offer, whereby the first ten attendees at each show, who express an interest in taking the product, are offered it free
Hybrid makes exciting debut at Sign and Digital Hybrid Services launched the new Mimaki JFX2002531 LED UV flatbed printer at the show last month. The Mimaki JFX200-2531 large flatbed UV-curable inkjet printer is a recent development of the JFX200 series, which brings compatibility with media up to 2.5 x 3.1 metres, accommodating rigid signs, wall decorations, doors and other big items. Larger media is only one aspect of its increased capabilities; the JFX200-2531 can also accommodate two 8ft x 4ft signage boards allowing print companies to benefit from a 20% increase in productivity, keeping the printer running continuously as an 8ft x 4ft board can be loaded while another 8ft x 4ft sheet is printed. “Mimaki’s JFX200 series has earned itself a name for quality and creativity,” explains Hybrid’s National Sales Manager, John de la Roche. “However, the larger JFX200-2531 adds further productivity for those companies with a focus on rigid signage and point of sale, printing to aluminium composite and foam core boards. We really wanted the opportunity to show the new version of the JFX200 off to Sign & Digital UK visitors so they can appreciate the added capacity - and what it can offer their printing business.” Hybrid also launched the new small format UJF-MkII range of flatbed direct to object printers, the new Tx300P-1800 textile printer as well as showing a full line-up of solvent printers, printer/cutters and UV machines. www.hybridservices.co.uk

IPEX launches Design Challenge Delivering on its “print in action” vision, IPEX has announced a design challenge aimed at apprentice graphic arts designers and students to create part of its 2017 advertising campaign. Apprentices and students, and designers working in the wider community aged under 25, are invited to develop and submit a design of a visitor promotion advertisement for IPEX. The winning designs will be run in the trade press over a five-month period. Entries will be judged by a panel comprising a publisher, marketing experts, graphics designers and chaired by IPEX Event Director, Rob Fisher. “We felt this is a great way to engage with people who are currently completing apprenticeships in graphic arts and print companies, and with those designers aged under 25 who are working in the wider print community. It gives them an opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage”, commented Fisher. The closing date for entries is 30th April and the winner will receive a MacBook Air with runners-up receiving gift vouchers to redeem for equipment of their own choice. Prizes will be presented at a ceremony held on the main stage of this years’ IPEX on November 1st. Professor Brian Minards, principal of Harrogate and Londonbased design consultants Minards Associates, and a Professor in the School of Advertising at Academy of Art University, San Francisco, said; “Print is where design meets the physical world, so to my mind it is vital that designers learn what it can do for them. This competition allows for young apprentices and students to experience what it’s like to produce designs that will work across different, integrated mediums.” The competition is closely aligned with the Future Skills Zone, another new key feature at IPEX this year, and aimed specifically to help printers attract new talent into the industry. www.ipex.org/designchallenge

PIXEL PROPHET
GETTING THE BEST OUT OF GADGETS There were plenty of gadgets at the Photography Show as you would expect; not just cameras and lenses but all manner of related products. But as Martin Christie wandered through the aisles of hardware and software, he found there was a lot of talk going on; not just about the kit, but how to use it properly.
[T]
he trade and public exhibition have always had a certain amount of lectures and demonstrations, but this year it was noticeable that there were many more mini stages tucked around corners of stands for the wise to educate the enthusiast masses on all things digital. The big stages are all very well, but a smaller, more intimate venue gives the opportunity for some genuine exchange of experience and advice. Even Canon, who usually platform an intimidating range of cameras and large format printers, had given over valuable exhibition space to booths designed to connect with the users and develop both their interests and skills. It’s a theme I have regularly argued in this column in that it’s pointless providing the end user with ever more sophisticated and complex kit without helping them develop the expertise to use it. Without the necessary skills, the experience can be a frustrating one for the user, and ultimately non-productive as a short term sale may not produce any long term relationship, or brand loyalty much loved by manufacturers. We suffer from this syndrome at the print shop, with an increasing amount of technology arriving in the hands of those with little idea of how to use it. So any trend to increase customer competence will be appreciated, although even though thousands of amateur photographers passed through the NEC in March. It will be a slow drip before that awareness becomes common knowledge.
In the meantime, it was reassuring at least to touch base with others involved with print and related trades to establish that we all face similar issues. The particular profile of the Photography Show is that as it mixes trade and public, exhibitors get to face the whole range of users, good and bad. It’s a great reality check for the marketing men, as well as designers and
engineers. Many years ago, in a previous journalistic role in the motorcycle trade, I was fortunate to test a new machine in the company of the Japanese technicians who had made it, and they were seriously interested in my feedback in de-

briefing to discover how I felt about actually riding the bike. At the time I found it a little curious, when they obviously knew so much about every nut and bolt, that I could tell them something they didn’t already know. But in hindsight, it makes perfect sense, because however good the product is technically — unless the owner enjoys using it — it’s not going to be successful. At least there is a lull in the megapixel arms race, where camera makers appeared to be desperate to outdo each other with ever larger sensors, often in ever smaller cameras. This pause in hostilities has been caused, not only by the expense of development but also by the realisation that increasing the size and complexity of digital files brought with it, its additional problems of noise and distortion translating optical vision into electronic information. Conventional film had over a century to develop into a superb medium for capturing images. Digital has had barely a decade of massive upgrades of processing power, and storage capacity which has revolutionised how we capture the whole world around us and put basic photography in the hands of the masses. Ironically film was still in evidence, with Fujifilm releasing a new batch of professional colour and black and white rolls, due to demand from enthusiasts and the fact that at the top end the economics of medium format cameras still make it viable compared to its expensive digital alternatives. There was also plenty of basic instant imaging aimed at the fun end of the market, and illustrating how the convenience of digital can be mated with the nostalgia of film. Paterson even had their developing tanks and darkroom kit centre stage, though some visitors had to be shown the user manual on how to work the print washers! Digital cameras came with one important advantage, in that at the sharp end, the optical side of the equation was already well understood through that century of film, and that heritage of lens technology was well to the fore at the Photography Show. Along with everything else on display, the main theme seemed to underline the idea of improving the existing status quo with incremental steps, rather than revolutionary change. New toys like drones and 360-degree lenses make the headlines, but the basics remain the same. And curiously I didn’t see a single 3D printer when a year or two ago the media thought everyone would have to have one. Things move on.
Thought foiling & spot UV was expensive?
I always go to the Photography Show with the best intentions of not buying anything, and always fail miserably. There’s always something that catches my eye as a must have, even if I don’t need it urgently which is the curse of the enthusiast. This year my resolve was first broken by a couple of well-priced brackets which will be handy in the studio. But then later in the day, as the crowds had started to drift off I spotted a specialist stand that had been back to back anoraks, so couldn’t resist a peak. And as it was relatively quiet I got a chance to have a play on the Countour Shuttle. Looked like one of those way too complicated gadgets for serious geeks, but having an opportunity to get hands on convinced me that it had to be part of my personal editing suit. This is more than a mouse on steroids, and it will take me a while to get the best out of it. So next month I’ll be able to tell you if my impulsive investment was worthwhile. www.contourdesign.com/UK
MICRODOT
Another gadget being evaluated, is the Microdot; a digital magnifier which was designed to check the quality of computerto-plate equipment. Developed by British manufacturer Centurfax, it’s a microscope with a digital eye and brain. A handheld device, it is entirely portable and compatible with an android or smartphone, and small enough to slip in your pocket. It has a screen to enable you to select a section and get the lens to focus. It then can give you an instant read out, or the information can be transferred and saved as a digital file. Does it have a place in the print shop as well as the litho printers? We’ll see how useful it can be next month. www.ccdotmeter.com

In the first development of its kind, Magic Light Pictures and Forestry Commission England bring The Gruffalo characters to life in the forest through a new augmented reality app. The Gruffalo Spotter has been designed for exclusive use at twenty six forests across the country where visitors can join the adventure through the deep dark wood. Families will follow clues on an interactive trail and track signs of their favourite characters based on The Gruffalo, best-selling picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. These clues lead to five different Augmented Reality markers – footprint signposts, specific to each one of the characters. For example little footprints for Mouse, a slithery trail for Snake, fox tracks for Fox, bird footprints for Owl and the unmistakable great big Gruffalo footprint. When the visitor aims their device at the footprint marker, a short animation of that character is triggered, blending in with its natural surroundings. The self-led trail is packed with fun facts about forest animals with fantastic activities along the way. Once families have spotted the characters, they can use the app to bring the 3D character animation to life and take photos alongside them. Their photos are automatically added to the device’s gallery, from where it can be shared via social media with the hashtag #GruffaloSpotters. Taking family forest walks to new heights, the app mixes technology with the real world, encouraging children to get exploring, firing their imaginations and enabling them to have an all-new forest experience. The Gruffalo Spotter’s app has been has been created by Nexus Studios’ innovative Interactive Arts division and is available for free with no in-app purchases from the App Store Google Play and Amazon. Featuring bold and intuitive design, the app is perfectly suited for easy use by the whole family. A Gruffalo Spotters kit will be available to buy on site and includes animal facts and tips for tracking wildlife, an evidence collection bag, a magnifying glass and a pencil to make a note of your forest finds! Bridgette Hall, Recreation Manager for Forestry Commission England commented: “This is such an exciting development and will deliver a completely different forest experience for our visitors. The Gruffalo is a world renowned story and to be able to bring the characters to life in their natural setting is fantastic. It’s great we’ve had the opportunity to join the two worlds of technology and nature together in a sensitive way!” Barney Goodland, Head of Digital at Magic Light Pictures said: “Our partnership with Forestry Commission England has been an overwhelming success from the start so in this, our fourth year of activity, we wanted to do something really special. We’re always looking to further children’s enjoyment of The Gruffalo brand and this was an innovative way to incorporate new technology with a real world experience. Working

Leading multinational paper bag manufacturer AB Group Packaging has launched a reusable ‘heavyweight’ paper bag, which is PEFC certified, 100% recyclable and has the unique ultrastrong quality of being able to carry up to 37lbs in weight. This exciting new product was launched at this year’s Packaging Innovations exhibition, held at the NEC in Birmingham. The paper used to make the bags is more durable, than standard papers as well as being both water and tear resistant. The super strong paper bags are constructed with large side gussets, which allow the bag to sit upright and open easily for fast, easy packing. With its cleverly concealed handles, the bag also has the capability to fold neatly, allowing it to be stored for reuse. The bags have soft hold handles, can be supplied with a coloured handle option, and are available in custom sizes with custom branding options. Commenting on this new addition to the company’s extensive range, AB Group Packaging’s Managing Director, Dermot Brady, said: “Companies offering these bags to customers in store can be assured that they are choosing a responsibly sourced, renewable paper alternative choice to thicker plastic bags. Our heavyweight bags are reusable, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable – a great environmental choice which ticks all the boxes for the eco minded customer”. PEFC, as the world’s leading forest certification system, has certified more than 300 million hectares of forests to PEFC’s internationally recognised Sustainability Benchmarks, supplying more than 18,000 Chain of Custody certified companies with responsibly sourced timber and wood products, such as those used in producing fibre-based paper products such as packaging. Today, more and more companies from SMEs to global brands are keen to demonstrate that the fibre they use in their packaging materials comes from certified sustainable sources. This matters as consumers are increasingly conscious of how their purchasing decisions impact on the world’s precious natural resources. www.pefc.co.uk

with the Forestry Commission and Nexus Studios has been a real joy and it’s exciting to now be sharing The Gruffalo Spotter with families. Most importantly for us the app is completely free, which means that it’s there for everyone to enjoy.” Claire Cook, Creative Producer at Nexus said: “The team at Nexus are massive fans of The Gruffalo and were really excited to be able to bring the iconic characters to life in the forest through the magic of Augmented Reality. Working with Magic Light and the Forestry Commission has been a fantastic collaboration on many levels, from new technical innovation in AR and real time 3d characters, to creating an experience that works outside in all weathers and for all ages. The creative challenges have always been enjoyable and we can’t wait to see children (and their grownups!) playing it.” The Gruffalo Spotters app is free from the App Store, Google Play and Amazon and requires downloading before your visit. New business leads Our on going research into setting up a web design service to help new businesses will soon be ready. Becky has developed a new corporate ID to complement our 30 year old ‘colour copying pioneering stance’. It is interesting to see how our services have grown and changed since 1984 and I guess, on reflection, our re-launch was somewhat overdue. We aim to prove exactly who controls print business introductions. A website will always need print to drive traffic, but how often can you design a business card without a web reference?

It’s training to get more from your existing team. It’s software which lets you design, manage and deploy sites more quickly, more profitably. It’s an entire business system. It’s also exclusive. NETTL launches pilot of NETTL NOW — four-hour print service with free delivery Nettl, the network of 100 neighbourhood web studios, has launched a new service, Nettl Now. Nettl Now offers a range or print and display items, delivered free and within four hours. Clients place their order online at www. nettlnow.com, upload their print file and then choose a delivery slot, starting within four hours. Their order is then printed, packed and delivered that day by dedicated bike or van. The range covers the most popular print items most businesses use, from posters to postcards, flyers to banners and business cards to brochures. You can order as little as one poster, up to a few hundred flyers. Peter Gunning, CEO of Grafenia plc, the people behind the Nettl network said “Our studios are constantly asked to help with last minute print jobs. We’ve developed Nettl Now to meet this demand and rescue clients out of their pickle. Perhaps they’ve been let down by another printer, or someone forgot to order marketing for an event, or they’ve spotted an opportunity and need to react quickly. It costs much less than you might think.” Nettl has chosen Manchester to be the first pilot location with the service launched to the general public on 6th March. Production is handled by their print factory, based in Manchester’s Trafford Park. “Manchester was a natural choice for our pilot” continued Gunning, “there’s a strong start-up scene and a growing tech hub in Media City, less than a mile from our factory. We’ve been printing in Manchester for
over twenty years.” Mikey from brand agency, Schawk Manchester, was one of the first customers to test the service prior to launch. He said “I tried out Nettl Now to see what it was like. Got some cards delivered in less than four hours. It was really easy and I love the quirky packaging.” Once the Manchester pilot is successfully trialled, Nettl Now will enlarge to ten other cities. In other cities, production will be handled locally by selected Nettl and printing.com production partners, who have signed up to be part of the first wave. After that, Nettl plan a national roll-out to cover all major cities. They are asking printers with digital or large format equipment to register their interest in becoming a NowMaker. There’s a form at www.nettlnow. com/nowmaker Marian Stefani, Chief Executive of the IPIA said “This is really interesting. As consumers, we’re encouraged to source food locally, to cut down on food miles. The same should apply to print. Nettl now could be a way for national brands to cut their ‘print miles’ by having print manufactured locally to where they’re going to use it, and delivered just in time. Instead of ordering in bulk, they could order only what they need, just a few hours before they need it. This could be game changing.” Although Nettl expects many clients will want delivery as quickly as possible, within four hours, some will want to specify a one-hour delivery window at another time to suit their

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Easter Diet
“How’s the diet going?” “Not good, I had eggs for breakfast.” “Scrambled?” “No, chocolate.”
The Super Unknown
We took the kids to one of those restaurants where the walls are plastered with movie memorabilia. I went off to see the waitress about reserving a table. When I returned, I found my 10-year-old granddaughter staring at a poster of Superman standing in a phone box. She looked puzzled. “She doesn’t know who Superman is?” I asked my wife. “Worse,” my wife replied. “She doesn’t know what a phone box is.”
The Anxious Poodle
Poodle: “My life is a mess. My owner is mean, my girlfriend is leaving me for a German Shepherd, and I’m as nervous as a cat.” Collie: “Why don’t you go see a psychiatrist?” Poodle: “I can’t. I’m not allowed on the couch.”
Ooh ar Captain
A pirate walks into a bar with a coconut sweet on his head, sits down and orders a drink. The bartender serves the pirate his drink, and asks about the coconut sweet. The pirate smiles and says, “That’ll be the bounty on me head!”
More compliments
When a salesman slipped into our print shop, I did the logical thing: I panicked and called my father. “How do you get a salesman out of our print shop?” I shrieked. Dad advised me to leave a trail of compliment slips from the shop to the outside. It worked—the salesman found his own way out of the print shop. Unfortunately, he passed another salesman on his way in. Ed. Do they still do this?
I can’t see the joke for the trees
Two tall trees are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them. One tree says to the other: “Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?” The other says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands in the sapling. The tall tree says, “Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?” The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies: “It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. That, my friends, is the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in.”
Baby, Learning to Talk
Dad: “Say Daddy!” Baby: “Mummy!” Dad: “Come on, say Daddy!” Baby: “Mummy!” Dad: “Damn it, say Daddy!” Baby: “Damn it, Mummy!” [Mum comes home and joins the conversation.] Mum: “Honey, I’m home!” Baby: “Dam it!” Mum: “Who taught you that?” Baby: “Daddy!”
Grammatically Correct Animal
The manager of a large city zoo was drafting a letter to order a pair of animals. He sat at his computer and typed the following sentence: “I would like to place an order for two mongooses, to be delivered at your earliest convenience.” He stared at the screen, focusing on that odd word “mongooses.” Then he deleted the word and added another, so that the sentence now read: “I would like to place an order for two mongeese, to be delivered at your earliest convenience.” Again he stared at the screen, this time focusing on the new word, which seemed just as odd as the original one. Finally, he deleted the whole sentence and started all over. “Everyone knows no fully stocked zoo should be without a mongoose,” he typed. “Please send us two of them.”
Not at all PC – sent in from the States
Sally was seen going into the woods with a small package and a large bird cage. She was gone several days but finally she returned. Her friend, Liz, had never seen Sally looking so sad. Liz said, “Heard you went off in the woods for a couple of days. Glad you got back okay, but you look so sad. Why?” Sally replied, “Because I just can’t get a man.” Liz said, “Well, you sure won’t find one in the middle of the woods.” “Don’t be so silly”, Sally said, “I know that. I went in the woods because I needed something there that would get me a man. But I couldn’t find it.” Liz said, “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.” Sally replied, “Well, I went there to catch a couple of owls. I took some dead mice and a bird cage.” “So, how’s that goin’ help you get a man?” asked Liz. Sally said, “Well, I heard the best way to get a man is to have a good pair of hooters.”
Hotel Request
A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in the country he planned to visit on his holiday. He wrote: “I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?” An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who said, “I’ve been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I’ve never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware or pictures off the walls. I’ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I’ve never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you’re welcome to stay here, too.”
When I Arrived Here Mr. Peterson, a tourist from Toronto, arrived in Barbados. In an airport taxi cab, Peterson asked the driver, “Say, is this really a healthful place?” “It sure is,” the cabby replied. “When I arrived here I couldn’t say one word. I had hardly any hair on my head. I didn’t have the strength to walk across a room, and I had to be lifted out of bed.” “That’s wonderful!” said the tourist, “How long have you been here?” “I was born here.”
First Date It’s the Spring of 1957 and Bobby goes to pick up his date. He’s a pretty hip guy with his own car. When he goes to the front door, the girl’s father answers and invites him in. “Carrie’s not ready yet, so why don’t you have a seat?”, he says. “Uh, thank you, sir.” says Bobby. Carrie’s father asks Bobby what they’re planning to do. Bobby replies politely that they will probably just go to the coffee shop or the cinema. Carrie’s father responds, “Why don’t you two go out and screw? I hear all the kids are doing it.” Naturally this comes as quite a surprise to Bobby so he asks Carrie’s dad to repeat it. “Yeah” says Carrie’s father, “Carrie really likes to screw; she’ll screw all night if we let her!” Well, Bobby doesn’t quite know what to think, but his plan for the evening is beginning to look pretty good. A few minutes later, Carrie comes downstairs in her little smart skirt and announces that she is ready to go. Almost breathless with anticipation, Bobby escorts his date out the front door. About 20 minutes later, Carrie rushes back into the house, slams the door behind her, and screams: “Dammit Daddy! ITS CALLED THE TWIST!”

That’s A Heavy Shirt
Two brothers were fast asleep when the eldest heard a thud sound Eldest: What’s that sound? Youngest: Oh, it’s just my t-shirt falling off my bed. Eldest: T-shirt? Why was it so loud? Youngest: Because I was still in it.
Pretzel Hold
Our story begins at the Olympics, specifically the wrestling event. It is narrowed down to the Russian or the American for the gold medal. Before the final match, the American wrestler’s trainer came to him and said, “Now don’t forget all the research we’ve done on this Russian. He’s never lost a match because of this “pretzel” hold he has. Whatever you do, don’t let him get you in this hold! If he does, you’re finished!” The wrestler nodded in agreement. Now, to the match: The American and the Russian circled each other several times looking for an opening. All of a sudden the Russian lunged forward, grabbing the American and wrapping him up in the dreaded pretzel hold! A sigh of disappointment went up from the crowd, and the trainer buried his face in his hands for he knew all was lost. He couldn’t watch the ending. Suddenly there was a scream, a cheer from the crowd, and the trainer raised his eye just in time to see the Russian flying up in the air. The Russian’s back hit the mat with a thud, and the American weakly collapsed on top of him, getting the pin and winning the match. The trainer was astounded!
An old farmer is inconsolable after his dog goes missing.
When he finally got the American wrestler alone, he asks, “How did you ever get out of that hold? No one has ever done it before!” The wrestler answered, “Well, I was ready to give up when he got me in that hold, but at the last moment, I opened my eyes and saw this pair of balls right in front of my face. I thought I had nothing to lose, so with my last ounce of strength I stretched out my neck and bit them as hard as I could. “You’d be amazed how strong you get when you bite your own balls!”
The Husband Who Knows
When Grace Is Needed
“Well, what seems to be the problem?” asked the clock repair man. “It’s my grandfather clock. It used to go tic toc, tic toc, tic toc. Now, it just goes tic, tic, tic, tic, tic,” replied the young lady. “Hmmm, I think I can fix this,” he says. He opens the door on the clock, looks at it, and then says to the lady, “Don’t worry, we have ways of making it toc!”
Little Mikey and his family were having Sunday dinner at his grandmother’s house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When Little Mikey received his plate, he started eating right away. “Mikey! Please wait until we say our prayer,” said his mother. “I don’t need to,” the boy replied. “Of course, you do,” his mother insisted through gritted teeth. “We always say a prayer before eating at our house.” “That’s at our house,” Mikey explained. “But this is Grandma’s house and she knows how to cook.”
Advice From Mother
A daughter asks her mother, “What are character qualities that I should look for in a marriage partner? You know, for someone that I will be spending eternity with.” The mother replied, ”Go ask your father, he did better than I did.”
He takes out an ad in the newspaper, but two weeks later, there’s still no sign of the mutt.
While attending a marriage seminar dealing with communication, Tom and his wife Grace listened to the instructor, “It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.” He addressed the men, “Can you describe your wife’s favourite flower?” Tom, smiling but looking a little nervous, leaned over, touched his wife’s arm gently and whispered, “It’s self-rising flour, right?”
