Badgemaster boosts productivity From its Nottinghamshire base, Badgemaster offers a unique service to companies thanks to its vision and commitment to quality and innovation. Formed in 1992, Badgemaster now employs over 100 people and turns over £5 million, manufacturing the name badges that are sported by millions of staff at tens of thousands of companies around the world. With customers in practically every business sector, Badgemaster is widely regarded as the market leader, with an enviable client list of blue-chip brands operating in the service, retail, hospitality and healthcare industries. A full gamut of production processes spans its premises; with screen printing, hot foiling, laser engraving, routing, resin doming and digital printing forming an unparalleled array of capabilities as the company enjoys a sustained period of growth. In recent years, Badgemaster has transitioned to take advantage of the latest digital technology and a suite of Mimaki printers sits at the heart of its production. “One of Badgemaster’s great strengths is our ability to combine printing and manufacturing techniques to provide the best product for the customer’s needs,” says the company’s Managing Director, Ian Bradbeer. “The ongoing investment in technology puts us at the forefront of the industry and the quality of our badges speaks for itself.” “Our continued investment in Mimaki flatbed LED UV printers has brought new techniques and capacity to the business,” he continues. “We typically offer a 3-5 day turnaround time for existing clients and this ensures we deliver.” A significant recent project involved supplying John Lewis and Waitrose with around 85,000 badges that were incorporated into their widely publicised rebrand. Senior Sales Account Manager, Claire Geere takes up the story; “We

met with the client on a number of occasions, providing concepts for their marketing team, sampling materials, print techniques and colour options.” “We were able to rapidly prototype a range of concepts for John Lewis and Waitrose using the Mimaki flatbed printers, assisting the design signoff and approval process,” she concludes. The addition of two new Mimaki UJF MkII printers through Mimaki Authorised Partner, Sabur Ink Systems, that coincided with the John Lewis and Waitrose job gave much needed capacity to the business. “We were astute enough at the time to make the investment,” says Scott Warren, Badgemaster’s Manufacturing Manager. “The new Mimaki printers almost trebled the throughput we could achieve, with their latest generation print heads, larger bed size and ‘logical seek’ function that reduces the time the head carriage takes to move between print areas.” “We make a point of maintaining regular contact with our customers, especially after a machine has been installed,” says Dan Jeffries, Business Development Manager at Sabur. “When we upgraded Badgemaster’s older Mimaki equipment to the new UJF MkII printers, we employed a multi-day training programme to introduce the new technology into their existing workflow to ensure they

were in a position to deliver the output in the timescale their client required.” Headline jobs such as the one for John Lewis / Waitrose are not the only throughput at Badgemaster; the company’s recently introduced online ‘Badge Designer’ tool caters for customers who require much smaller runs, even catering for one-off designs. Bradbeer is keen to stress that in spite of the growth in web-to-print work, Badgemaster is far from being purely an online business. “We’ve introduced this facility to continue our support for customers who require very short runs, but at any stage, we’re just a phone call away if they need assistance setting up artwork or determining the most appropriate material or effect.” This commitment to service and support is something Badgemaster recognise in their relationship with Sabur. “The ‘customer first’ approach we experience working with Sabur consistently benefits our business,” states Bradbeer. “When we promise to go the extra mile for our customers, it’s refreshing to work with a supplier that does the same for us.” By combining printing and manufacturing techniques, Badgemaster can deliver a highly bespoke solution. “We spotted the original UJF on UK Mimaki distributor, Hybrid’s stand at Sign & Digital UK many years back, tested the printer with a range of substrates at their showroom in Cheshire and saw immediate advantage over alternatives,” recalls Warren. “The opacity and brightness of the white, the detail of the imagery and the adhesion of the ink were all beneficial to our business and made choosing Mimaki easy.” The company now sports eight Mimaki printers including rollto-roll print and cut, grand format flatbed and several of its core small format UJF models. www.hybridservics.co.uk

CPI installs Océ ColorStream 6700 Multi-national printing group CPI has installed a new Océ ColorStream 6700 Chroma roll to roll system after approaching Canon with a mission to streamline production and deliver increased capacity. A long term user of Océ VarioPrint technology and multiple PRISMA workflows, CPI opted to reinvest with Canon to meet the increasing appetite for print on demand (POD) and fuel operational expansion. Following in-depth consultations on methods of driving greater high quality output, the printer was installed. CPI Antony Rowe Divisional General Manager, Martin Collyer, said: “Canon has impressed us with its reliable and efficient technologies, and outstanding service. Since implementing Océ VarioPrint 6000 systems, we have increased our ability to produce high volumes of books in short timescales and remain agile in a constantly evolving market. Canon was the obvious choice when it came to exploring new ways of shortening the inventory cycle and bolstering capacity. “The Océ ColorStream 6700 Chroma has enabled us to adapt to the growing industry wide shift towards print-on-demand transferring 1.5 million more books to the inkjet platform - without incurring high costs for additional print units and managing complex operations. Integrating perfectly with the

existing cut sheet systems, it has also allowed us to maintain flexibility for our customers by providing monochrome printing work while boosting colour production capacity.” Committed to environmental protection, CPI uses FSC certified papers across all 17 of its factories. It is also dedicated to promoting waste recycling and invests in multiple reforestation programmes around the world. The first European printer to invest in inkjet printing, the group boasts an impressive heritage that includes many well-known printers from CPI books to CPI Clausen & Bosse. Key benefits from the investment for CPI include: The ability to transfer existing monochrome

work seamlessly to colour production Outstanding colour fidelity, wider gamut, and higher optical densities Unrivalled operational efficiency and easy to operate Outstanding sustainability, with little paper waste and low energy consumption CPI operates across seven different countries and currently employs a workforce of 2500 staff. As well as producing books and printed documents for leading publishing houses, it also serves the commercial print market, supporting agencies, brands, and retail. Stuart Rising, Canon UK’s Head of Commercial Print and Production said: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with such a well respected and established industry player. CPI is a major force in print and its dedication to minimal paper wastage, and maximum efficiency ties in perfectly with our own core values. Through the ColorStream 6700, CPI is already achieving the increase in print-ondemand production needed to keep pace with fast changing market dynamics. The speed, quality, and range of the machine, make it the ideal solution for deploying sleek automation in the pre-press environment while restricting energy consumption, and maximising sustainability.” www.canon.co.uk

PROFILE OF THE MONTH

Allied Images LARGE FORMAT SCANNERS

Weekly women’s lifestyle magazine Grazia selected the Heidelberg UK showroom as a backdrop for a section of its big fashion issue last month. Gerard Heanue, managing director, says: “We were really delighted that someone from the Bauer Consumer Media team had seen our showroom and thought it an appropriate industrial space for this shoot. The production team, camera crew and model were great guests, focused and creative, and we are absolutely delighted that the Speedmaster press is the backdrop for some stunning shots.” Heidelberg UK was paid an £800 location fee but has decided to use this money to support a local Brentford charity, the Mulberry Centre, which offers practical and emotional support to people with cancer. www.heidelberg.co.uk

Route 1 Print recognition for business growth South Yorkshire printers, Route 1 Print, wasted no time in becoming the UK’s largest online trade printer, just a few years after launching in 2012. Now, their rapid growth has been recognised by the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards who have awarded the company with the Scale-Up Entrepreneur award. The past year has seen a big leap forward for Route 1 Print as they purchased their second production facility. Their new unit is located just next door to their current site and will increase their floorspace by 45%. Over the last four years, Route 1 Print has spent £25 million on new equipment. This expansion gives them room to continue investing in the latest technology and they already plan on spending £1.5 million on machinery this year.

This year won’t just be about new equipment, though. Route 1 Print will invest another £1.5 million on refurbishing the space to create the perfect, up-to-date printing environment. “We’ve always been ambitious,” says Head of Route 1 Print, Mark Young. “As we grow, we always keep one eye on the future to see what needs to happen next. We could see that we needed more space in order to continue building our service and this was exactly the right point in our journey to take that step.” It’s this commitment to growth that has gained Route 1 Print recognition at the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards. The Scale-Up Entrepreneur Award champions businesses

that clearly include an expansion strategy in their long-term business plan. Route 1 Print will be joining the ranks of previous winners, including The LADBible Group, ClearScore, and The Car Buying Group. Mr Young goes on to say, “We know that the key to growth lies in giving our clients a service that meets their needs. Every investment we make is made with that in mind and this expansion is no different. We can now continue to develop our offering to customers and help them with all of their print needs.” Later this year, Route 1 Print will kick off a recruiting initiative to staff the new facility, adding to their already large workforce of over 350 team members. The company anticipates the second site to be up and running as part of their daily operations by early 2020. www.route1print.co,uk

Encapsulated by the campaign’s full title, ‘Your Inspiration, Our Innovation, Make the Difference’, the initiative showcases innovative, high quality and creative commercial projects produced by Mimaki customers. The campaign will form an inspirational catalogue of best in class printed applications to drive increased ideas, knowledge sharing, business growth and profitability. “We are delighted to launch this campaign today and further support and celebrate our amazing customers. At Mimaki, we see success as a team effort,” says Danna Drion, Mimaki Europe’s Senior Marketing Manager. “By working together, we can fuse creativity, technology and energy to deliver incredible results.” The first series in the campaign features Mimaki customers in the UK — Gate7 and its client KUHN, who is a leading UK-based manufacturer of

farm machinery, as well as the award-winning University of Huddersfield. Brett Newman, Chief Operations Manager at Mimaki’s UK and Ireland distributor, Hybrid Services talks about the project: “Mimaki’s ‘Make the Difference’ campaign promises to fuel the printing industry in the UK with an exciting and creative flow of customer stories and application possibilities. We’re incredibly proud of both Gate 7 and The University of Huddersfield who are leading the way in this first phase of the campaign and we look forward to sharing the stories, blogs and other content to our audience here in the UK and Ireland.” Mimaki Europe has created a dedicated ‘Make the Difference’ landing page that will feature all the stories and blogs in a dedicated space: www.mimakieurope.com/MTD . “The first technical blog will explain about a set of Mimaki’s proprietary core technologies used to ensure stable production and continuous operation to deliver superior results,” continues Newman. “This inciteful content follows on from the Core Technologies area of Hybrid’s website that we curated last year to delve deeper into what makes Mimaki’s printing technology superior.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

MTP Media invest in Horizon SPF-200L After taking over local business Pagefast late last year, Kendal commercial printer MTP Media decided to increase production capacity for fast response short runs by enhancing its bindery capabilities. It chose a Horizon SPF-200L bookletmaker with two Vac 1000 collators from Intelligent Finishing Systems. The new addition replaced an 18 year old Horizon MC8 SPF-10 line. “When we bought Pagefast we needed to invest in a solution that would handle the increased workload in-house,” explains director Alistair Sanderson. “Runs are getting shorter and shorter and turnaround times are getting faster. So, we wanted a system that could manage these jobs more efficiently. “We were also sending some work out, such as landscape booklets, but this was an additional cost and impacted delivery times. The new system can produce landscape books which means we can offer the service more responsively while saving time and eliminating outsourcing costs.” The highly automated 4,500bph Horizon SPF-200L combines stitching and folding with the ability to feed A4 landscape sheets up to 640mm in length. JDF-ready, it offers instant set-ups via a large icon-based colour touchscreen for user-friendly operation. The screen can be used for on

Canon enhance Oce Prostream 1000 Canon UK has announced new enhancements to the Océ ProStream 1000 continuous feed inkjet press. The Océ ProStream 1000 was designed to enable customers to migrate highvalue work from offset to inkjet and exploit the full creative potential of variable data printing within multi-channel promotional campaigns. After only a year in the market, customers have embraced the technology for its superior inkjet productivity and offset-like print quality and there are now a total of seven placements in EMEA. Customer feedback from these first installations across Europe has driven Canon’s continuous innovation programme for the Océ ProStream 1000 and new enhancements were launched at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2019 in Lucerne, Switzerland Canon introduced a new automation tool to improve production efficiencies and quality control. The optional Inline Quality Control system enables Nozzle Activity Control and Colour Uniformity Control. Other new features of the Océ ProStream designed to help customers increase applications versatility also include improved sharpness for vectors, linear, inverse or micro text and edges, as well as an extended media range supporting papers up to 300gsm. First customer in the Nordic region — Otava Bookprinting Ltd, part of Otava Group, has become the first Océ ProStream 1000 customer in the Nordic region and the eighth placement in EMEA. Operating for more than 125 years, Otava Group is a major Finnish media house and ranks third among graphic communications publishers in the country, with turnover of over €300m. It remains one of the only high volume

publishing houses in Finland, publishing more than 600 new titles annually. Marko Silventoinen, Managing Director, Otava Bookprinting comments, “Traditionally we only produced books with offset, but, with changing customer trends, we were no longer able to predict book volumes and struggled to respond quickly to changing customer demands. We therefore decided to investigate the opportunities with a number of digital print technology providers.” Otava installed the Océ ProStream 1000 in March with production starting from April. Silventoinen concludes, “We know we can’t change our whole production line at the same time, but this is the first step towards improving production efficiencies. The local Canon team really understood our business and has come up with solutions that will help us meet our business goals. We’re excited to see how the ProStream will help turn our vision of ondemand production into a reality.” Liber Digital future-proofs business with the ProStream — Liber Digital, a 60-year old, family run business and part of the Gómez Aparicio

Group in Spain, was looking for a digital inkjet solution that could handle increasing run lengths, while sustaining print quality. The company’s existing Océ ColorStream 3000 and digital toner systems could not handle the new requirements to produce high quality output on standard offset media at high speeds. Liber Digital is confident that it now has a solution in place that can adapt with the changing trends in the publishing market. He explains, “We’re always looking for the next step to prepare our business for the future. With Canon’s support, we’ve been able to improve book production using the Océ ProStream and Océ PRISMA workflow suite, which is enabling us to explore new opportunities. We can now efficiently handle run lengths of anything between 500 and 1,500 books. In the future, we see our main area of growth in children’s hard back colour books, niche magazines, and specialist interest books. With digital print technology, we are changing our customers’ business models by enabling publishers to deliver books faster than with offset. www.canon.co.uk

New Intec ColorCut flatbed digital cutters Intec Printing Solutions Limited, innovators in digital imaging and finishing, is delighted to publish glowing praise from a global producer of illustrated playing cards… After researching the market, Heritage Playing Card Company, a UK company with a global marketplace, dealt Intec a winning hand by picking a ColorCut flatbed cutter — and it revolutionised their business! Seeking to bring resources in-house, Heritage joint company owner, Jeremy Shaw, discovered Intec digital cutters whilst researching cutter options on the internet. The ColorCut CC500 sheet fed cutter caught Jeremy’s eye first of all, however, it was the dual tool head and in particular, the creasing facility of the flatbed range, that really set his imagination alight! Following an in-depth conversation with Intec director of new business, Mark BakerHomes, Intec ran a series of samples on Heritage’s files, to demonstrate the suitability of the flatbed range. Following receipt of the cut and creased tuckboxes, Heritage was so impressed, the company placed an immediate order for the FB600 model, (able to accept one SRA3 sheet or two A3 sheets for batch processing). “It is fun and immensely satisfying to receive an order for 24 decks of bespoke cards at 9 in

the morning, and then, ‘from scratch’ to print, cut, pack and ship at 3 in the afternoon.” said Jeremy. Installation was swift and training was easily understood by the Heritage team — they were soon up and running. “The software is intuitive and we soon started creating artworks to suit the ColorCut,” commented Jeremy. “We totally love this cutter, it has given us such a leading edge on our business model.” Opening new opportunities — Jeremy continued: “Furthermore, we can now easily

and affordably personalise one theme into 52 bespoke sets! This is new. For example: think of our very popular ‘Cathedrals, Abbeys & Minsters pack’. Each playing card features one of 52 major places of worship — it is now quite possible for us to place any given building on the front of its own pack and produce whatever quantity that particular venue may require. That means, our one theme can be exactly tailored to suit each of the 52 outlets, making the decks much more saleable at each venue’s gift shop! This really adds extra value to the packs for the tourist destination venues — as well as to Heritage Playing Card Company, too…” More about the Intec ColorCut range — The Intec ColorCut Flatbed series of cutters, sets new standards in cost, flexibility and speed. Ideal for cartons, presentation folders, swing tickets, point-of-sale and much more! Digitally cut and crease any shape, on card, boards, label media and synthetics of up to 600 microns. The Intec ColorCut range of flatbed cutters contains five professional models. Ranging from the world’s most affordable flatbed cutter, the FB520, through the most popular FB600 and FB700 models, to the larger FB900 and highly productive FB1060 models. www.intecprinters.com

TrueVIS TR2 wins Avery Dennison ICS Guarantee Roland has told QPP that Avery Dennison has awarded their advanced ICS Performance Guarantee for graphics printed with new TR2 eco-solvent ink and the new TrueVIS VG2 series 1625 mm and 1371 mm (64” and 54”) wide-format eco-solvent printer/cutters. According to Kohei Tanabe, President of the Roland DG Digital Printing Business Division, the ICS Performance Guarantee provides warranty protection for up to four years for outdoor printed graphics and up to seven years for indoor graphics. “Just as exciting for users of the TrueVIS VG2 series and Avery Media combination,” Tanabe said, “is that after widespread testing, Avery has set the recommended outgassing time at just six hours. This dramatically reduces the print and laminate timeframe recommended for traditional solvent technology by 75%, allowing users to easily implement same day print and laminate workflows in their businesses and retain a full graphics warranty.” “We at Avery Dennison work closely with printing experts like the engineering teams at Roland DG to create production solutions that offer superior performance and peace of mind to our customers,” said Paul Roba, Avery Dennison OEM Relationship Manager. “We are happy to add another high-quality print platform with the TrueVIS VG2 series and TR2 ink to our extensive Integrated Component System Warranty Program. We continue to provide thoroughly tested solutions to our PSPs,

increasing confidence in graphic performance and identifying throughput improvement processes.” The TrueVIS VG2 series adopts a new generation of eco-solvent TR2 ink. In order to take full advantage of the VG2’s superior colour reproduction capability and the wide colour gamut provided by TR2 ink, a True Rich Color preset was also created – allowing vibrant colours to be combined with neutral greys, smooth gradations and natural skin tones for producing stunning graphics.

“Extensive product development was completed for the new TrueVIS VG2 Series printer/cutters in combination with the new and advanced TR2 ink,” Tanabe said. “The Avery ICS performance guarantee in conjunction with the six-hour outgassing capability provides confidence in the new technology we have implemented to help our customers excel in the real world, where professional graphics producers demand durable high-quality output with brilliant colour and fast turnaround.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET

IMPROBABLE BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE After nearly 20 years Martin Christie didn’t make the normal annual trip to Birmingham in March for a photography show. He has always been a fan of this exhibition at the NEC as it has reflected the many changes in image capture over the decades from a time when digital was just a little novelty, to one where film is the quirky thing to use.

[R]

unning from a weekend into the weekdays made it accessible to both public and trade without either having to lose a day of work, and the mix meant exhibitors had to tackle both those who sold their kit and those who bought it. As I have said before, a great reality check for many marketing men when their sales slogans meet the real world, and often discover the uncomfortable fact that what they think people want isn’t necessarily the solution. As such the changing face of the show has been as much visitor led as exhibitor, as the demand for a stronger digital presence was impossible to ignore over the years. Had it not reflected these changes, it would have died a death. A fate which other exhibitions have suffered. An exhibition has to be an event to draw people to it. Something has to be there they can’t get from the comfort of their own computer screen — something different to make the effort worthwhile. I’m sure this year’s show was just as interesting as before, and no doubt a success without me. I’m sure plenty of other photography enthusiasts made it. But it wasn’t any lack of enthusiasm that caused my change of mind. I had my trade ticket all ready and was messaging other photographers who might be attending on what day and when. It’s just when it came closer I decided I was just too busy — too busy to take a working day, and busy enough that I didn’t want to encroach on a precious leisure one. Not that we seem to get that much predictable leisure these days. It seems ironic that with so much instant communication it gets ever harder to actually plan things in advance. Perhaps one goes with the other. Things just come up that you have to deal with, so you have to trade one commitment with another. With the pressure of print on demand, we are of course at the mercy of that very factor, and problems, even if they are not in themselves major, have to be dealt with in case they become so. Perhaps I’m looking through my old rose-tinted glasses but photography

and reproduction seemed to be a lot simpler on the days before digital. Not as convenient admittedly, because it was a more elaborate process. But then we had a whole chain of specialists to help us. Now we have to be the experts, even though often we are charting new territory rather than drawing on past experience. The Photography Show, like many expos, these days will have featured a good number of seminars and demonstrations which are invaluable because they can pack what would otherwise be months or even years of learning into an hour of practical example. Inevitably these are aimed to educate those with less experience, although no one is so expert that a little bit of extra knowledge wouldn’t harm. Often there are gaps and blind spots that you may have missed in the long digital experience. But overall the pitch is more general and less specific. And that’s a limitation if you have a particular problem you want to raise with an engineer for example about a printer. If they are even on the stand they will be too busy selling it to talk about complicated detail, and if it’s a new problem, they might not know the answer either. Using a search engine is certainly more convenient than searching for an expert but then you have to filter through opposing and often conflicting advice to try and work out what the solution might be. There is no doubt the internet is full of experts, but it is equally full of opinionated commentators who think they are. Ultimately you have to weigh up all the alternatives and apply a certain amount of expertise mixed with common sense. It’s the Sherlock Holmes solution, in the words of Conan Doyle, eliminate the impossible and anything that’s left, however improbable, must be the right answer. The little problem that taxed my grey cells this month seemed very simple at first, but solving it was anything but. A strange regular pattern of lines appeared on a piece of printed artwork, which on an inkjet printer would generally mean using too low a resolution in the driver, or a blockage of ink in any one of the multiple print heads. Except that the lines didn’t follow the print head path, they were diagonal across the image. If it was a customer supplied file you would be suspicious of how it was originally scanned, edited or saved. But this was one of my scans from an artist’s original canvas, and several other similar scans done and printed at the same time did not show a similar effect. As this was thicker art paper in use, perhaps there was an underlying weave in the make up being revealed when ink was applied, but moving the orientation made no difference. Using different media made little difference either. Sometimes you can spot things on the screen by enlarging the size of the viewed image but there was nothing that obvious to the eye so it had to be something between the information going from the computer to the printer. That’s where the mystery deepened. The prints with the patterns were printed at a smaller size, nearly half that of the original scan, but at the

Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging

April 2019

original resolution to preserve pixel detail. But printed full size, there were no pattern marks. I had resized the file to print in Photoshop, but to eliminate that I tried letting the printer dialogue do the work. That still produced a pattern, but in the opposite direction. The answer had to be in some sort of conflict between the file resolution and the printer output resolution. Something in the electronic interchange was causing a regular interference, something like the effect caused scanning items that have already been screened called the moiré effect. This is where two or more repeating patterns overlap each other. It used to be more common when most scanned documents and images were taken from newspapers and magazines. The original dots would confuse the frequency of the scanner sensor, like two singers trying to sing in harmony when one is ever so slightly off key, although in electronic terms it’s when they exactly match it causes trouble. It’s just the way digital works. The issue was further clouded because I generally save scans as TIFF files, as recommended by Adobe themselves, and as LZW compression to save a little file size as they say it is lossless in terms of quality. A little on line research of LZW however reveals that in order to reduce file size it can repeat regular patterns to save space. So we have a perfect storm of something in the original scan, perhaps an underlying texture in the canvas, triggering an invisible digital trail that was only revealed at certain resolutions. However improbable, it had to be the case. In fact instead of enlarging the image to spot the problem, if I reduced it on the screen to a few centimetres square, then the moiré effect was obvious to see. Bizarre but counter intuitively the answer was to print or save at a slightly lower resolution to avoid the effect. Nothing is ever predictable with digital imaging it seems except that something unexpected can crop up every day. Something odd cropped up with Photoshop this month as well, which apparently is a bug in the recent upgrade that will get sorted, but for the moment may cause some short term confusion. I got a message saying a document could not be opened because there was not enough room to display it. I had something similar this year working from Adobe Bridge but just thought I’d selected too many images at once. But

vivid-online.com

this has nothing to do with available memory. It’s an issue with the actual workspace. I use two monitors as I like to work on a clear print file on one, and have my tools or a library of thumbnails open on another. Lightroom actually supports a similar secondary display, but doesn’t have the function to move or float tool and other action panels. Moving the tool boxes around can apparently cause some confusion in the display, which is also reliant on the Windows 10 engine. If they stray too far from the extreme margins of the screen, the programme may decide it is just too full to look for anything else. The short term solution is just to reset the workspace. Window>Workspace>reset workspace. Everything will pop back to its rightful space in default then you can start again with your own custom arrangement if you have one, or any of the preset ones. Simple! Meanwhile, back at the sharp end, our long-term test of the Epson SCT5400 is going extremely well and providing valuable feedback on how the printer performs in the working environment, with real customers. Yes it’s fast, economical, produces good colour coverage, but you’d expect no less from a modern large format inkjet printer. It’s only when you live and work with it over several months that the real character and calibre of this machine becomes apparent. We have run Epsons for a number of years, so are very familiar with the model range and are able to compare the four colour more basic model with an eight-colour 7880 which we have been using for three years for all manner of jobs.

The simple answer is that it compares very favourably despite the limited ink range available, indicating how much a new generation of pigments, together with improved software and hardware, can compete with quality previously reached only by more sophisticated models. As mentioned last month, the workflow monitoring system not only provides an ongoing breakdown of consumable usage and cost, but also an interesting analysis of how composite colour is blended with only four pots to pick from. Three months down the line and the black level has hardly moved, showing that the K is really only used as a back up to boost colour density and fill shadow areas. Magenta has taken a real battering, followed by cyan and then yellow in that order. Over the period this is from a fairly typical customer mix of plan prints to full colour posters. What has surprised me is how well it prints on a variety of media, from 80gsm uncoated to backlit and clear film for display. On all it is quick drying which is just as important as how fast it can print because if you have to leave a copy overnight to flatten cockling or harden inks it’s rather defeating the point of having it. More on the Epson next month.

Ryan Miles new MD at Heidelberg UK Ryan Miles (43) will be the new managing director of Heidelberg UK and Head of Cluster Northern Europe, a region which includes the UK, South Africa, Sweden and Denmark. Ryan is currently managing director of South Africa and will relocate to the UK with his family and is due to take up the post from 1 April 2019. Ryan succeeds Gerard Heanue, having reported to him for the past five years, and has the greatest respect for him. “Gerard is a true gentleman and can be very proud of his achievements,” he says. “He has an ability to create and steer true growth and the past five years have been the most fulfilling of my career.” That career has included roles as finance director of Kodak SA and group chief operating officer of Itec SA. Ryan studied accountancy at university and attained his articles before entering the business world in 1998. “Having been in the technology, industrial, telecommunications and

graphic arts industries has helped me build broad experience and I continue to grow and develop my leadership skills,” says Ryan. “If I have any regret it is that I didn’t join Heidelberg sooner!” Ryan’s leadership style is described as “open, transparent and actionorientated” and he is very customer-minded. “Heidelberg UK must continue to develop and innovate in order to provide the best value to its customers, whose needs are always evolving. Our service and support must remain world class and we need to ensure customers can take maximum advantage of the digitised world and the advanced technology that Heidelberg can offer,” says Ryan. He recognises differences between the South African and UK markets. In South Africa there is still an oversupply of production capacity and there is a continuing consolidation. The UK is largely through that phase and is one of the most productive printing markets in the world. Outside work, family is the top priority for Ryan Miles. He is married to Jo-Ann and has two children, Caitlin (10) and Daniel (8). He loves watching sport and travel, experiencing different places and cultures. Gerard Heanue says: “Ryan and I have worked together for five years and I have seen the great job he has done in revitalising the organisation there so I had no hesitation in proposing him to the Heidelberg Board for the UK role. He is a good team player, very bright and future-focused. He is the right man to take the organisation forward.” www.heidelberg.co.uk

n the last issue we featured the show preview so rather than cause a déjà vu incident in print, this forecast report is an insight into the innovation best targeted at our PSP part of the industry. This year’s event hosted more product launches with exciting debuts from suppliers such as Ricoh, InkTec/Jetrix, Canon, Hybrid Services/Mimaki, Roland DG, Amaya Sales UK, Trotec, GMG Color, Graphtec, Sabur Digital, Vivid Laminating Technologies and Atech.

The Epson Five

Those seeking cost, time and quality efficient print solutions were not disappointed by Epson’s presence at Sign & Digital this year. Standout skin tones, vibrant natural (and unnatural!) images and the practical (wallpapers and stickers) were on display, showing some of the specialist features of Epson’s SureColor production, such as the use of white ink and red ink. Epson exhibited five printers on its stand to cover a range of the applications handled by Epson’s SureColor technology. Signage was well represented with three

models in the SureColor S series, including at the top of the range the SureColor SC-S80600. Epson SureColor SC-S80600 is a ten colour eco-solvent inkjet printer. It uses Epson’s latest generation Micro Piezo TFP print head for exceptional print quality up to 1,440 x 1,440dpi resolution. The ten colours for this printer are from the UltraChrome GS3 range allowing printers to hit up to 98% of the Pantone colour gamut from 700ml ink tanks. The other signage printers on show were the SureColor SC-S60600 and the SureColor SC-S40600. The photographic quality SCP20000 is great for fine art work, photographic displays and backlit applications as well as for proofing. The dye sublimation printer the SureColor SC-F6200 is the entry level textile and décor printer which can also be used to produce promotional products in tandem with an oven. That could include a diverse range of items like ceramics, phone cases, fobs, jewellery and even helmets and toilet seats! Phil McMullin, sales manager, Epson UK says: “Last year we witnessed a resurgence in interest in eco solvent-based inkjet technology. This year we witnessed interest in diversification as printers seek a stand-out advantage. Epson is synonymous with quality in whatever sectors we address; that is a key USP for us. We are a name that customers trust because we manufacture the chassis, printheads and inks ourselves. It is that overall control of the process that helps guarantee results, time after time.” www.epson.co.uk

Your Print Specialists (YPS) introduced Anthony Devine, Founder and Creative Director of Ministry of Upholstery and star of BBC’s Money for Nothing programme, bringing his pioneering upholstery school to the YPS stand. Devine held live workshops throughout each day to demonstrate how accessible upholstery production can be, with printed fabrics produced using Mimaki digital textile print technology. A champion for digitally printed textiles, Devine’s Ministry of Upholstery was formed in 2013 and is located in Manchester. The school features a large, well equipped workshop space and enables individuals to learn upholstery skills and create a bespoke piece of furniture featuring their own personalised fabric. “Ministry of Upholstery is a modern upholstery school and we’re pioneering a new way of learning, which is accessible, flexible and inclusive,” states Devine, who previously

outsourced printing for several years before finally taking the plunge and purchasing a Mimaki TS300-1800 printer and heat transfer press through Mimaki Authorised Reseller Partner, YPS. “We are delighted to host Anthony on our stand at Sign & Digital UK 2019,” says Georgia Brown, YPS Sales Director. “Making our customers aware of new technology, materials and the opportunities they create is a responsibility we take very seriously, and we can see this echoed in the ethos of Ministry of Upholstery. Anthony is a fantastic ambassador for embracing personalised digital textile print for the home décor market.” Georgia continues, “The potential within the textile home décor market is hugely exciting and is indicative of the emerging, progressive technology in digital print. Furniture, bedding and soft furnishings are just a small example of products driven by e-commerce, low manufacturing costs and the rise in the production of a wide choice of digitally printable, durable fabrics.” Devine showcased the power of digital print from artwork creation to finished furniture. Using several of his TV designs, demonstrating various upholstery processes and working on several projects to include a chair inspired by the Mona Lisa, the art of deep buttoning and more. “Digital textile print is an exciting route to new business and profitability,” states Georgia. “With the advent of digital textile innovations and improvements in technology, the market is changing rapidly. With the lower cost of production through affordable print technology, inks and a wider choice of fabrics, small companies can now cost effectively print on demand.” “Digitally printed textiles are expected to grow three-fold globally in the next five years and the market sector is worth over $20 billion, of which an estimated 3-5% is currently digital,” she continues. “As a company, YPS is keen to support new and existing businesses looking to make the move into the digitally printed textile market and our stand reflects this,” she concludes. www.yourprintspecialists.co.uk

Soyang Europe is now stocking the ST217 Eclipse blockout material, which has a palatable white reverse making it more pleasing to the eye, as Soyang Europe’s Managing Director, Mark Mashiter explains; “This market driven release has been developed to meet customer demand. Available up to 3.2m wide, this triple layer textile weighs in at 310gsm and is ideal as a backing liner for textile tension frame systems, or for backdrop graphics printed with either dye sublimation or UV print technologies.” A further new textile material is now available from Soyang Europe’s 70,000ft² UK distribution centre: ST-603 Polarlight. “Polarlight is a coated backlit fabric that has been treated to make it print receptive and then coated again on one side with resin, which allows you to print UV on the coated side with high resolution,” continues Mashiter. “It’s made from 100% polyester, giving a super smooth surface, great wrinkle resistance and good light transmission.” Two of Soyang’s popular printable textiles — ST-216 Nightstar and ST-601 Starlight have recently been released in 5m widths, making these already sought after products available for the grand format exhibition and retail markets, as Mashiter goes on to describe; “Starlight is our go to backlit textile that works like a dream with UV and latex inks to create impressive lightbox displays. Now that it’s available up to 5m wide, we’re envisaging a positive uptake for grand format applications and large, seamless backlit displays. Nightstar is a black back fabric ideal for backdrops. It has a slight stretch to the material which works well with frame systems.” A further exciting addition to Soyang Europe’s product range is a finishing product manufactured in Canada — GreenStrip Keder, a speciallyformulated, PVC-free keder for textile tension frame applications. “We’re really pleased to be able to offer the GreenStrip Keder as part of the Soyang Europe portfolio,” Mashiter explains. “There’s a

23

very real demand for products to assist with the finishing of textiles, including those for lightboxes and frames and GreenStrip is an ideal solution. Its green credentials make it suited to retail textile applications where environmental responsibility is a hot topic.” New to its consumables portfolio, Soyang Europe has available from stock the Transjet Boost sublimation transfer paper. Transjet is a coated sublimation paper for digital transfer printing with water-based dye sub inks, especially suited for high speed printing. “We have a number of substrates available for the sublimation transfer market and the introduction of Transjet transfer paper is extending our portfolio so that our customers can get everything they need under one roof,” outlines Mashiter. “Sublimation transfer printing is popular with some of our customers for use with stretchier materials and for those without direct sublimation hardware. Transjet Boost provides a great solution for enhanced colour release and densities along with excellent ink absorption and drying for our transfer sublimation customers.” www.soyang.co.uk

New VersaUV LEF2-200

This latest model forms part of Roland DG’s popular range of LEF-series desktop and benchtop UV printers, with the LEF2-200 inheriting their renowned ability to print amazing graphics and life-like textures, including premium finishes such as simulated embossing, onto a vast array of materials up to 100 mm (3.94 in.) thick. In addition, this new model offers an array of new enhancements that make the LEF2-200 even easier and more efficient to use, on top of its already-strong market reputation. This new model will appeal to promotional print companies, retailers, screen and pad printers, sign shops, commercial printers, product manufacturers, industrial businesses and designers, the LEF2-200 can print onto virtually any surface, with typical applications ranging from customised promotional goods, gifts, souvenirs, stationery, electronics, awards, signs, packaging, industrial items and prototypes. “The VersaUV LEF2-200 makes it very simple to print premium-quality photographs,

graphics and text on almost anything,” said Kohei Tanabe, President of Roland DG’s Digital Printing Business Division. Its ECO-UV ink cures instantly on the surface of the material, so that it’s possible to print directly onto PVC and plastics, canvas, wood, leather, fabric, etc. Plus, alongside full colour printing, you can also produce premium gloss and matt finishes as well as simulated 3D embossing for amazingly life-like textures with multiple layers of clear ink. Capable of printing on corners and curves as well as soft materials such as leather and fabric. Simply put, the advanced Roland ECOUV ink formulations are designed for both flexibility and beautiful imaging. According to Tanabe, the new LEF2-200 incorporates a host of advanced functions to simplify high quality printing. A Start Timer Function completes the setup procedures of printhead cleaning and white ink circulation automatically by your designated start time — even getting it ready for when you arrive at the office. A positioning jig makes it easy to align items on the print table. Plus, the VersaUV LEF2-200 includes the latest VersaWorks 6 RIP software, featuring an intuitive interface for easy operation and job management. The LEF2200 also adopts a new cleaning system to increase reliability. Plus, a Head Refresh Feature removes any ink remaining on the printheads and cleans the printhead surface to maintain the health of the printer. An airtight cover protects operators from UV light and prevents dust from settling onto the surface of materials while printing. “With the LEF2-200, now anyone can print stunningly realistic and colourful images onto many different materials that you might not think possible,” Tanabe said. “To be able to offer this print capability even to people who are inexperienced in using this technology, we focused on ease of operation and the highest levels of reliability so that everyone can enjoy printing graphics and textures with confidence. In summary, this LEF2-200 adds incredible value and opportunity for business growth.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

Reduce weeding time by 80% Improve HTV weeding by 80% with the Stahls’ EZ Weeding Table. With heat transfer vinyl the bond between the vinyl and its carrier lessens when heated. Stahls’ has developed the EZ Weeding Table to help facilitate this process, saving you time when manufacturing your garments and freeing you up to increase production volume. Target Transfers ran live demonstrations throughout the exhibition to show you just how much quicker it can be, and you could try it for yourself. You could even take your own pre-cut

design for weeding to put it to the test. As the bond between a heat transfer material and its carrier lessens when heated this patented table heats materials slightly to promote removal from the carrier, resulting in easier weeding with less material breakage. You may increase productivity up to 80%. This is a quick overview of the EZ Weeding Table… • 50cm x 91cm (20” x 36”) weeding area • Three temperature settings - 110° for finely detailed designs up to 130° for maximum productivity on larger jobs • Top clamp holds materials in place while weeding • Fits most production tables and counter tops • Rounded edges for operator comfort • Rests flat or at one of four incline settings • Tool holder keeps your EZ Weeder™ handy • Built-in storage compartment • Compatible with standard 110v outlet info@targettransfers.com

Hybrid debut new Mimaki technology

Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services launched three new products at this year’s exhibition. Mimaki’s recently announced metallic LED UV ink was on show for the first time on a Mimaki UJF-7151plus, enabling the production of highend graphics for packaging, small to mid-format signage and bespoke décor and giftware. “The addition of a metallic ink to Mimaki’s line-up of LED UV flatbed printers offers significant revenue generating opportunities for graphics professionals to leverage,” states Hybrid’s Chief Operations Manager, Brett Newman. A further innovative ink was also unveiled at the exhibition in the form of a clear option

for the hugely popular UCJV300 Series LED UV printer/cutters. The addition of clear to the LUS-170 range of inks offers a host of new design possibilities and expands business opportunities by creating captivating displays using gloss, matte or textured finishes. “Utilising flexible UV inks that cure instantly allows customers to quickly print and immediately deliver the finished product without waiting for drying,” states Newman. “The UCJV printers also feature white ink, enabling users to produce brilliant colours on transparent, coloured or metallic substrates. The introduction of clear ink also places the UCJV300 series into the prototyping and packaging environment.” Underlining the variety of technologies

available to view on Hybrid’s stand, a third important debut showed the high performance Mimaki TS55 dye sublimation printer. This 1.9m transfer paper printer is ideally suited to companies producing soft signage, retail graphics, fashion and sportswear and benefits from a winning combination of low running costs and high productivity. “Production printing is a core theme for the Hybrid stand at Sign & Digital UK this year,” Newman asserts. “Across Mimaki’s range of solvent printers and integrated printer/ cutters, LED UV roll to roll and flatbed machines and a host of textile and dye sublimation technology, we’re able to deliver a production solution for print companies, whatever their volume requirements. Reducing lead times, increasing profitability, removing barriers to entry and delivering high quality output with the minimum of user intervention — all run centrally to Mimaki’s innovative approach to technology development,” www.hybridservices.co.uk

‘Retail is Detail’ for HP and Summa Nottingham-based specialist wide format print distributor ArtSystems exhibited cutting-edge products from key partner vendors including HP, Summa and Onyx, and highlighted the advantages of integrated print workflows for retail signage. Children become climate ambassadors

UPM supports the academy programme of Plant-for-the-Planet, a charitable foundation that wants to contribute to climate protection. The foundation plants trees and organises children academies to promote sustainable thinking and environmental awareness. “In the academies children educate each other as ambassadors for climate justice. They learn concretely how the climate crisis threatens their future and the lives of people worldwide and develop their own actions for their future in groups. Furthermore, they also practice their presentation skills as a core competence for school and everyday life,” explains Lisa Kohn, Public Relations, Plant-for-the-Planet. On the occasion of the 10th Plant-for-the-Planet Children’s Conference this month, the children planted a medlar in front of the Youth Hostel in Possenhofen, Germany “Plant-for-the-Planet’s philosophy fits well to UPM’s own commitment to sustainability and our will to promote active dialogue with our local stakeholders. UPM’s global and local support activities are coordinated under the umbrella of our Biofore Share and Care programme, which reflects our dedication to helping shape a sustainable and innovative future. We specifically support projects that are relevant to our business and through which we promote innovation, sustainability and local community welfare. One focus area of this programme is reading and learning, so we have here a perfect match,” says Dr. Stefanie Eichiner, Sustainability Manager at UPM. “Plant-for-the-Planet organises children academies around the globe in order to sensitise children to problems surrounding climate and justice. More than 140 seminars are held annually all over the world, for example in Pakistan, Nepal, Nigeria and Ghana. Around 50 academies are organised every year in Germany alone.” “UPM’s Biofore strategy is based on the versatile use of renewable wood biomass, driven by a commitment to innovation, resource efficiency and responsibility. We plant roughly 70 million tree seedlings per year. Our goals and the goals of the Plant-for-the-Planet foundation fit well together and it is particularly important to pass on this thinking and knowledge about climate justice to the younger generation.” www.upm.com

A low cost environmental programme for you and your customers that creates woodland here in the UK.

From its launch to the beginning of 2017 the Carbon Capture programme has donated over £500,000 to the Woodland Trust.

The paper-based cover is aesthetically almost identical to a standard frosted plastic cover. Unlike plastic covers, documents using the paper-based cover do not need to be separated into their respective parts to be recycled. The paper based covers from Renz are from paper that is unbleached, totally chlorine free (TCF), 100% recyclable, compostable and biodegradable. By comparison plastic binding covers made from polypropylene can take over 400 years to degrade. Managing Director Iain Bullock said “At Renz UK we have been looking to add to our existing plastic free product offerings. These new Eco Covers provide a great alternative to plastic acetate or polypropylene binding covers. It has been widely reported the damage that plastic waste is causing. Over eight million tons of plastic ended up in our oceans last year and it is the responsibility of everyone to actively reduce their plastic footprint. As a manufacturer we have a duty and responsibility to offer products that are plastic free”. This latest product from Renz follows recent sustainable product launches such as the Bindomatic Eco Thermal Binding Covers. Renz UK are also the UK distributor for Argos Solutions Cold UV Coaters. Bullock adds “UV coating provides a great cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic lamination. The move towards plastic alternative products is not some trend or fad. We simply cannot continue to dump millions of tons of single use plastic waste into landfill”. www.renz.co.uk

Print On turns to DYSS to improve productivity

Since its inception in 1995, Print On in Cheshire has evolved from a high-street photocopy shop to a digital print on demand company producing everything from posters and signage through to pop-up banners, stationery, die cut boxes, PoS displays, FSDUs, acrylic boards and general large format print and finishing. To support this growth, the Cheadle company has moved to a new purpose built facility and filled it with the latest print and finishing technology, including a DYSS digital cutter from AG/CAD. In 2015, the business invested in a Mimaki 2.4 by 1.2m flatbed direct to substrate UV printer to expand its large format capabilities and enter new market segments. However, in the three years since, the company had been hand cutting large format sheets and boards, a laborious process open to human error. Commenting upon the situation and the decision to invest in a DYSS X7-1624C cutter, Print On Managing Director, Mr Alex Oldfield says: “We needed the flatbed printer to support the changing needs of the market and to move into large format work. Likewise, we found that customers were looking to work with an ever increasing range of substrates. Without a cutting machine we often had to turn work away or have it cut externally.

Quick Print Pro • 2020 Print Vision

April 2019

Additionally, a percentage of the work that we could hand cut required geometries and shapes that were extremely challenging. We looked at the digital cutter options and as soon as I saw the DYSS machines from AG/CAD at a trade show, I knew it was the machine our business needed.” Print On opted for the DYSS X7-1624C with the Super Head configuration for the flexibility afforded by the routing spindle and the additional two tool slots which can accept a range of quick-change knife tools and creasing tools. The K-CUT Camera Vision System also included in the package offers unparalleled precision when cutting printed media. The Benefits of the DYSS - The benefits of the DYSS X7-1624C have made a significant difference to the 11 employee business, as Mr Oldfield continues: “One of the key things about the DYSS is confidence. We now have the confidence to take on all types of work, regardless of material types or complexity. We can take on work that we previously had to turn away because of these factors. This has resulted not only in the nature of our work diversifying, but also our turnover increasing accordingly. We have also increased our client base as a result of the DYSS and we are now working with more print procurement companies. This is making for an exciting time for our business and its future.” Part of this entry into new market segments is credit to AG CAD’s KASEMAKE CAD software that was supplied with the DYSS machine. “We can now do more complex designs with the KASEMAKE software. As a company, we are now making headway with customers that are looking for boxes, FSDU’s and PoS display projects that were previously beyond our capability. This is giving us a foothold in the medical, pubs and leisure, retail and high-street sectors.” Measuring the Impact of the DYSS - The business is currently split 50/50 between small and large format work and the DYSS has made an impact on both facets of the business. “As an example of the benefits, we have previously been contracted to print and cut 1000 A3 sheets - by cutting 20 parts per large sheet by hand, this labour intensive work would take a member of staff up to 4-5 days. With the DYSS, this work can now be completed in less than a day. We have increased productivity massively whilst reducing labour-intensive operations. Our large format work can now be processed

Datalase launch contemporary new website

at least 50% faster with the DYSS X7-1624C, streamlining our business and reducing lead times for customers.” Not yet quantified are the material cost savings at Print On. However, Mr Oldfield recognises this is significant: “Previously, we would have considerable off-cuts and waste from hand-cutting boards. With the facility to ‘nest’ components with the KASEMAKE software, we can get more parts from each sheet. Additionally, we can use more of our offcuts for future work. We no longer have to order cut to size sheets and this is also creating a cost saving and an improved lead-time on material supply.” “Another factor that we can acknowledge is the reduction in human error and the subsequent waste. In the past, we would Javelin-cut large sheets and whilst this was efficient and relatively precise, when you put two or three sheets alongside each other, there would often be a slight difference. This would either result in secondary finishing or scrapping sheets and re-printing and cutting. Waste from hand-cutting could be significant, but this has been totally eradicated with the DYSS X7-1624C as its precision and consistency are guaranteed.” On the subject of reducing lead-times, Mr Oldfield says: “With some small format work such as A4 and A5 folders, we used to order cutting formes to die cut the work. Now, if the quantity is relatively low we can cut these projects on the DYSS. This eliminates the cost and 2-3 day lead-time of buying cutting formes and enables us to pass time and cost savings on to the customer. We are delighted with the benefits and opportunities that are now open to us with the DYSS machine. It seems the longer we have the machine, the more we are recognising the cost reductions and market potential.” www.agcad.co.uk

Foiling in love again!

As part of the on-going crusade by TheMagicTouch in the UK to assist customers in reducing production cost and time when decorating garments, the company introduces another innovative and affordable process that will “tick all the boxes” for garment decorators. In the past the decoration of garments with metallic and sparkle effect designs has involved the traditional method of cutting and weeding which becomes somewhat of a challenge when producing intricate designs or short-run production orders quickly. The new T.Foil Dark transfer process offers the ability for the user to produce stunning results quickly and very cost effectively onto almost any garment regardless of colour or textile composition and involves no time consuming cutting and weeding. The first part of the process involves printing the required design with a “composite” black toner onto the T.Foil Dark transfer paper using either an enhanced CMYK or CMY plus whitetoner based printer powered by the bespoke

SpaceControl RIP software. The printed transfer paper is then applied to the garment using a traditional heat press. Then from a choice of over 18 stunning foil colour options the design is covered and heat pressed again resulting in foil only attaching to the toner area. The finished transfer has a final press to ensure outstanding feel, look and durability. The new T.Foil Dark is compatible with the latest entry-level CMYK OKi printers (C612 and C332 models) which now have their own version of the “SpaceControlBasic” RIP to manage all the relevant transfer papers and assist in colour management. The printers, including the installed RIP are now available for less than £300 making the whole process affordable for all. In addition the SpaceControlBasic RIP will be also made available to purchase separately for those already with the CMYK printer. The foils are available in rolls 30cm x 25m and include metallic silver, gold, red, purple, blue, green, pink, rainbow, navy blue, baby blue, olive, rose gold, charcoal, orange and bronze. Plus sparkle effects in gold, silver and bronze. The T.Foil Dark is available in either A4 or A3 sheets. The bottom line is the user is able to produce transfers (transfer paper and foil) for less than £1 up to A4 and £2 for A3 quickly and profitably. DTM Print launches FX510e Foil Imprinter DTM Print have told QPP about the new FX510e Foil Imprinter for finishing and highlighting product labels. With the FX510e you can add brilliant shiny metallic or laminated highlights both to blank or already pre-printed labels, whether they have been produced by inkjet, laser, offset or flexo printing. The imprinting process is completely digital, virtually any design elements like borders, graphics, fonts and backgrounds can be printed. A fast and efficient one colour personalisation for POS or POI applications is possible as well. The FX510e differs far more than in mere appearance from the previous model, the FX500e. Besides a new chassis the printer contains an internal multifunctional roll holder allowing the use of rolls with

a core of up to 3”. An external passive label unwinder mounted on roller bearings is included as well. It supports label rolls with a maximum size of 114 mm (4.5”), a core of up to 76 mm (3”) and an outer diameter of up to 254 mm (10”). Market research has revealed that products containing shiny highlights on their labels become an eye-catcher and let them stand

out even more on retail shelves. The label itself appears precious and emphasises the quality and value of each product. Metallic highlights convey a message of luxury and elegance and are perfectly suitable for fine wines, delicacies and cosmetics. Not only metallic foils in gold, silver, blue and red are available for the FX510e, but also various spot colours and clear foil. With the clear laminating foil partial glossy add-ons, comparable with a UV coating, can be applied to the

product labels, e.g. for logo design or graphical areas. As a special highlight DTM Print offers a new thermal transfer label substrate for the FX510e: DTM Poly Clear Gloss TT. This substrate enables the production of crystalclear product labels with imprinted elements. The new foil imprinter is available in two versions: Next to the standard model, the FX510e, there is the FX510ec featuring a built-on guillotine cutter which allows to horizontally cut die-cut, reflective and continuous label stock. Fast print speeds and a low purchasing price of € 499 (MSRP) for the FX510e respectively of € 629 (MSRP) for the FX510ec allow users to quickly and cost efficiently produce labels on demand in the amount that is actually needed. www.dtm-print.eu

Hen Party Superstore says ‘Yes’ to Intec When it came to choosing a suitable partner to supply their in-house printing, print embellishment and cutting equipment — Hen Party Superstore said ‘yes’ to the Intec proposal of a perfectly matched suite of solutions, for their every need. Based in Telford, ‘Hen Party Superstore’ and its sister company, ‘Play & Party’, are both part of the Blue Cockerel Group — a long-established family run business. Blue Cockerel made the corporate decision to bring their printing and finishing facility fully in-house and also to upgrade current plant to a much higher level. Mark Hoar, managing director of the company, set about sourcing an appropriate provider and it was during a visit to the UK Print Show 2018 that he discovered Intec Printing Solutions. ColorSplash print quality, speed, functionality and affordability: Having seen the Intec kit in action at the Print Show, Blue Cockerel were pretty sure they were making the right choice, but before officially placing their order, Intec offered to sample and calculate costings for two of Blue Cockerels regular print items. This was easily done via Intec’s iCat cost calculator, which has been developed to give precise cost analysis in conjunction with the Fiery XF RIP. Basically, any PDF can be measured and calculated against ColorSplash

consumables costings to obtain the real printing costs per sheet. No more faking it: “Metallic foiling? Yes, Yes, YES! With our new ColorFlare CF350 we can produce the real thing — no more trying to simulate ‘rose gold’ and faking other special effects out of CMYK toner. We are so happy with this machine,” said Sophie. “Our hens are looking for glitzy bling and glam’, and the ColorFlare adds it all so easily — we’re in love with metallic gold and rose gold — it’s the real thing.” More than just metallic foiling: Although metallic foiling is a major attraction, ColorFlare is perfectly at home adding lamination and holographic effects to printed sheets. Regardless of which model used, all ColorFlare devices can be used to great effect across a

wide range of media substrates. The process is fast and economical, the end results are limited only by the user’s creativity — and the whole production can be carried out for as many or few pieces as required. Readers might be interested know that the CF1200 and CF750 models are also available in the ColorFlare range. Cutting and creasing ANY shape: The ColorCut FB520 is a very compact and useful digital cutting and creasing device. “At Blue Cockerel, we have plans to really put this machine in to action,” continued Sophie. ”Bottle labels, stickers and novelty items are some of our best sellers. We can design and produce exactly what we need, to meet customer demands — as well as adopting emerging trends. Plus, having this kind of kit in-house means we can produce results instantly!” New revenue stream: Having this production suite in-house has also given Blue Cockerel ideas about developing an even wider range of bespoke products to add to both company’s ranges. Card games and novelty fun items are just a couple of ideas currently in the pipeline for development. “It’s so easy to experiment with new ideas, shapes and finishes,” enthused Sophie. “Having the kit on tap and not incurring outsourced charges has set us free to exploit the market.” www.intecprinters.com

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? White Goods

A woman goes to a psychiatrist and says, “Doctor, you’ve got to do something about my husband. He thinks he’s a refrigerator!” “I wouldn’t worry too much about it,” the doctor replies. “Lots of people have harmless delusions. It will pass.” “But you don’t understand,” the woman insists. “He sleeps with his mouth open, and the little light keeps me awake.”

Treasure Island

There was once an island kingdom whose people were all fabulously wealthy. Even though they could have afforded to live anywhere they wanted, tradition dictated they stay on their tiny island home. Eventually, their king became frustrated and called a meeting of the tribe’s elders. He said he wanted them to figure out a way he could enjoy his wealth, and stay within traditional guidelines. After much consideration, the elders suggested he build a magnificent throne. When he objected there was not enough room in his hut for a throne, the elders suggested he call in an engineer to solve the problem. Soon, the king’s tiny hut was rigged with an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys. He could lower the huge throne for use during the day, and at night, he could haul the throne up, and lower his bed. This was truly the best of both worlds for the king. Unfortunately, after a few months of constant use, the ropes frayed, and one night, the throne slipped and came crashing down on the king, killing him. The wise men of the island recognised a lesson in this experience and added to the lore of their people this statement: “People who live in grass houses should not stow thrones.”

Short Marriage

Two newlyweds quickly realised their marriage wasn’t working and filed for a divorce. The judge asked them what the problem was. The husband replied, “In the five weeks that we’ve been together, we haven’t been able to agree on a single thing.” The judge turned to the wife, “Have you anything to say?” She answered, “It’s been six weeks, your honour.”

Birth Right

A Native American chief had three wives, each of whom was pregnant. The first gave birth to a boy. The chief was so elated that he built her a teepee made of deer hide. A few days later, the second gave birth, also to a boy. The chief was very happy. He built her a teepee made of antelope hide. The third wife gave birth a few days later, but the chief kept the details a secret. He built this one a two-story teepee, made out of a hippopotamus hide. The chief then challenged the tribe to guess what had occurred. Many tried, unsuccessfully. Finally, one young brave declared that the third wife had given birth to twin boys. “Correct,” said the chief. “How did you figure it out?” The warrior answered, “It’s elementary. The value of the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.”

Nutritional Therapy

I must be following my diet too closely... Because I keep gaining on it.

Raising Baby

My son thinks I set the bar too high for him as a child. It seems like he never got over it.

Freudian Slips

A woman walks into her psychiatrist’s office and says, “Hey doc, you know how we have been talking about saying things that don’t come out the way we meant them to?” The psychiatrist replies, “You mean Freudian slips?” “Exactly, those. Well, I had the most amazing one last night. I was eating dinner with my husband, and I meant to say, ‘Honey, could you please pass the salt,’ but instead I said, ‘You utter bastard, you’ve ruined my life.’”

World’s Worst Caddy

Golfer: “You must be the world’s worst caddy!” Caddy: “No that would be too much of a coincidence.”

Email Hacked Again

My email password has been hacked again. That’s the third time I’ve had to rename the cat!

William Tell

Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. However, all the Swiss league records were unfortunately destroyed in a fire, and we’ll never know for whom the Tells bowled.

Buzz Brain

The world’s leading expert on European wasps walks into a record shop. Buzz Brain He asks the assistant “Do you have ‘European Vespidae Acoustics Volume 2? I believe it was released this week.” “Certainly,” replies the assistant. “Would you like to listen before you buy it?” “That would be wonderful,” says the expert, and puts on a pair of headphones. He listens for a few moments and says to the assistant, “I’m terribly sorry, but I am the world’s leading expert on European wasps and this is not accurate at all. I don’t recognise any of those sounds. Are you sure this is the correct recording?” The assistant checks the turntable, and replies that it is indeed European Vespidae Acoustics Volume 2. The assistant apologises

and lifts the needle onto the next track. Again the expert listens for a few moments and then says to the assistant, “No, this just can’t be right! I’ve been an expert in this field for 43 years and I still don’t recognise any of these sounds.” The assistant apologises again and lifts the needle to the next track. The expert throws off the headphones as soon as it starts playing and is fuming with rage. “This is outrageous false advertising! I am the world’s leading expert on European wasps and no European wasp has ever made a sound like the ones on this record!” The manager of the shop overhears the commotion and walks over. “What seems to be the problem, sir?” “This is an outrage! I am the world’s leading expert on European wasps. Nobody knows more about them than I do. There is no way in hell that the sounds on that record were made by European wasps!” The manager glances down and notices the problem instantly. “I’m terribly sorry, sir. It appears we’ve been playing you the bee side.”

In the great desert lived a bunch of nomads

Their leader, Benny, had risen to his rank, due to his magnificent beard. His people believed a man’s strength and courage came from his beard, and thus the man with the biggest beard was their chief. After leading the band for many years, Benny began to feel

My dog had a bad case of fleas. So I took him to the vet.

uncomfortable wearing the beards, in this hot and dusty land. He wanted to shave it off, so he called his council together to get their advice. When he said he wanted to shave, the councilmen were shocked. One said, “Do you now remember the ancient legend, dire? The leader who removes his beard is cursed and made into a piece of earthenware.” Benny had heard this legend, but being a modern man, he scoffed at the tale. Being headstrong, he went ahead and cut and scraped away his once magnificent beard. As the final whisker was cut off, a huge dust storm came up. It lasted only a few seconds, and when it cleared, there was a man-sized clay vessel where only moments before had stood their leader. The council then knew the legend must be true. Their conclusion? “A Benny shaved is a Benny urned.”

Roll Up

A salesman meets a gorgeous woman in a bar. They talk, they connect, and they end up leaving together. They get back to her place, and as she shows him around her apartment, he notices that her bedroom is completely packed with teddy bears. Hundreds of small bears on a shelf all the way along the floor, medium sized ones on a shelf a little higher and huge bears on the top shelf along the wall. The man is kind of surprised that this woman would have a collection of teddy bears, especially ones that are so expansive, but he decides not to mention this to her.

The veterinary lady told me, “I’m going to have to put him down.”

After a night of passion, as they are lying together in the after glow, the man rolls over and asks, smiling, “Well, how was it for you?” The woman says, “You can have any prize from the bottom shelf.”

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the midst of the French Revolution the revolting citizens led a salesman, a printer and an engineer to the guillotine. They ask the salesman if he wants to face up or down when he meets his fate. The salesman says he would like to face up so he will be looking up when he dies. They raise the blade of the guillotine and release it. It comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. The authorities take this as divine intervention and release the salesman. The printer comes to the guillotine next. He also decides to lay face up, hoping that he will be as fortunate as the salesman. They raise the blade of the guillotine and release it. It comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. Again, the authorities take this as a sign of divine intervention, and they release the printer as well. Next is the engineer. He, too, decides to lay facing up. As they slowly raise the blade of the guillotine, the engineer suddenly says, “Hey, I see what your problem is...”

It’s his senior year and he feels that he should go to the prom. So he musters up the courage and asks one of his friends. She says yes. Now he has to prepare for the dance. The next day, he goes to buy his tickets, and there is a huge queue. So he waits, and waits, and waits, then he finally gets the tickets. He goes shopping for a suit for the dance, and there is a huge line going out the door. So they wait, wait, and wait. Finally they get in and buy a nice suit. The next day, he remembers that he needs to order a corsage. So he goes to the local flower shop and there is a huge line of students. So he waits, waits, and waits until he gets his order in. Now it’s the day before prom and he wakes up and realises that he forgot to order a limo, so he calls up the limo rental place. All the lines are busy so he decides to go into the place. When he gets there, he sees another line stretching out the door and around the corner. So he waits, and waits, and waits, until finally he was lucky enough to get the very last limo. At the dance everything was going pretty good for about a half an hour until someone says to him, “hey, you’re her date, go get her some punch.” So he goes over to the punch table and thank goodness, there is no punch line.

High School Prom

Food for Thought

The Engineer and the Guillotine

So there was this slightly introverted high school student who had never asked a girl to a dance.

Smoking will kill you. Bacon will kill you. But smoking bacon will cure it!

I said, “What? Just because he’s got fleas?”

No, she said, he’s really heavy!
