SOLOPRESS ADDS PRODUCTION WITH HORIZON HOF-400
Efficient and flexible production from SoloPress’s new HP PageWide T250 web fed inkjet press is being supported by a Horizon HOF-400 high speed offline feeder from IFS. The Southend-on-Sea company, founded in 1999 through an informal collaboration between two start-ups, produces a wide range of commercial print including leaflets, flyers and brochures mainly for small businesses. The HP PageWide T250 inkjet press joined HP Indigo and iGen digital presses and Heidelberg

SpeedMaster litho presses. Solopress also operates a range of wide format production systems. Head of Operations, Jack Clifford, explains the investment: “We wanted something that would help us stitch the short runs from the new HP PageWide T250. We easily manage the long runs with our existing machinery. For short runs we were spending more time setting up the stitcher than running it. The HOF-400 allows us to manage these shorter runs more efficiently by loading collated sets with many different titles.

“It also gives us the flexibility to either complete jobs using the HOF or the hoppers. If there is a run with a high page count it makes more production sense to use the hoppers. If it is a small pagination then it is best to run it through the HOF-400.” As for choosing the system he says: “When we were making the investment we spoke to IFS to see what would be the best solution for stitched books of low quantity. The HOF-400 ticked all the boxes. We expect it to enable us to achieve a 20% to 30% increase in output.” The operation has also added a second HOF-400 to its bindery line up to support short run production from other presses. The Horizon HOF-400 high speed offline feeder provides flexible system configurations such as cover feeding, sheet insert on, variable page count, bleed trimming and creasing for digital printing. The HOF-400 finishing system can also be connected with the finishing devices for the offset outputs to process both digital and offset print. www.ifsl.uk.com

CPI PROPELS ITS PUBLISHING PROPOSITION CPI Group has invested in the Canon ColorStream 6700 and imagePRESS C9010 as part of its long term strategy to deliver a fully automated proposition to its customers. Supporting its plans to expand further into the publishing sector, the new purchases will allow CPI to cover every element of the book printing process, providing a true end to end solution for its customers. CPI Group is one of the biggest book and journal printers in Europe, with seven of its manufacturing sites based in the UK. The business has a long standing relationship with Canon after first purchasing a VarioPrint 6250 in 2008. The new devices purchased by CPI will help to support its ambitions to further expand into the publishing sector, adapt to evolving trends and meet the increased demand for agile solutions. In June 2020, CPI announced a joint venture with American owned, Wiley Distribution, delivering on-demand printing and inventory management. The new partnership will allow CPI to continue its expansion into the on-demand market through a sophisticated, automated process – with Canon devices being installed in Wiley’s European Distribution Centre facility in Bognor Regis. The new venture forms part of an ambitious growth plan that will see CPI invest a total of £3m and seek to hire forty new members of staff over the next three years.
The ColorStream 6700 will allow CPI to meet increased industry demands for short-run and zero inventory orders. As a result, when it was looking to invest in an appropriate solution, CPI knew it needed something that that was intuitive and easy to use and would offer customers a seamless solution. With its advanced image processing technologies and running speeds of up to 150 metres per minute, the ColorStream was the perfect choice. Its built-in technology will also allow the business to remain cost effective by keeping paper wastage to a minimum, whilst also reducing a publisher’s stock holding. CPI has also opted to purchase an imagePRESS C9010, as well as Canon’s PRISMA workflow technology – this will provide a fully automated Print Workflow solution that will help to further increase productivity. Alison Kaye, Managing Director, STMA & Colour, CPI UK, said: “We’ve had a strong working
relationship with Canon for a number of years and after installing a ColorStream printer in our Eastbourne site in 2019, we knew that the device would be the perfect solution for our latest partnership with Wiley Distribution. Since announcing the partnership in June, we have already started working with two publishing companies, Edward Elgar Publishing and John Hunt Publishing. The publishers have already started to see the benefits from the new print system and we’re looking forward to working with more publishing firms in the future.” Stuart Rising, Head of Commercial Print, Production Printing Products, Canon UK Ltd., said: “CPI’s move to supply print on demand from Wiley’s distribution centre is revolutionary and will provide its customers with an exciting new proposition. www.canon.co.uk/colorstream-6000-series www.canon.co.uk/imagepress-c910-series
PRONTAPRINT WIMBLEDON INSTALLS TITANIUM CUTTER Prontaprint Wimbledon has invested in an International Graphics Supplies (IGS) Titanium 2.5 x 1.6 metre cutting table, to eliminate a finishing bottleneck arising from the installation of a Mimaki UV flatbed printer. This high street, wide format and digital printer has seen a significant increase in wide format sales since the UV printer installation last June. However, this increase in production led to a finishing bottleneck due to their manual cutting processes. Shankar Umashankar, owner of Prontaprint Wimbledon said, “We had looked at a range of cutting machines but, after thorough testing and visiting DecTek and Zenith Packaging both very happy Titanium customer sites, the Titanium 2516 stood out as “robust, adaptable and very competitively priced”. “The Mimaki and IGS Titanium 2516 combination has enabled us to offer a varied range of products including short run and prototype packaging, point of sales displays, kiss cut labels and social distancing products.” “The IGS team managed the installation with ease considering we are on a very busy main road. The training for the new machine, including optimising the router for a wide range of rigid materials and rotary knife for our short run and prototype textiles customers has been excellent”. The Titanium 2516 was purchased from

International Graphic Supplies who are a Monmouthshire based machinery supplier. The Titanium series offers an impressive range of cutting tables that start with the Titanium 0604 and Titanium 0806 for the B3 and B2 digital print and litho press users looking to enter the lucrative short run packaging market. For the wide format print customer cutting tables are available from 1.1 x 1.3 up to 3.5 x 2.0 metres. With an automatic precision cutting tool, the exact cutting depth can be achieved quickly, precisely and efficiently. Supplied as standard with all titanium cutters is a high resolution registration camera which ensures cutting printed jobs accurately to register.
A range of specialty tools are supplied with each cutter. These tools offer speed, power and flexibility to handle a wide variety of materials, such as Dibond, corrugated, folding carton, solid board, foam, coating blankets, textiles, wood and a long list of plastics. Peter Flynn, Managing Director IGS comments on the installation “ I’m very pleased to see Prontaprint are already enjoying the many benefits of moving to a Titanium cutter. As Shankar identified our price / performance is hard to match and this powerful combination is allowing us to build a very impressive portfolio of customers. Our showroom is also busy with online demonstrations for prospects looking to invest in a digital cutter and UV flatbed printer to meet their customers’ requirements for social distancing signage.” www.prontaprintwimbledon.co.uk www.igs-digital.com

DURHAM BOX HELPS FISHING COMPANY DIVERSIFY In collaboration with solid fibreboard specialist, Northumberland based CRT Packaging, leading corrugated packaging manufacturer, Durham Box, is supplying the Ethical Shellfish Company, with e-commerce packaging to support the fishing company’s online fresh seafood delivery service. Using sustainable methods, the Isle of Mull based Ethical Shellfish Company’s core product is hand dived scallops, fished from their own boat around Mull and the surrounding islands. They also supply lobster, langoustine and crab, all creel caught and guaranteed 100% ethically sound, there being no damage to marine plants or animals. The shellfish is then delivered to some of the best chefs throughout restaurants across the UK. Since the start of the pandemic, the restaurant industry has been hit particularly hard by the effects of lockdown. Like many others SMEs, this has meant that the Ethical Shellfish Company has needed to diversify. The company set out to expand its reach by establishing an online facility, meaning that in addition to top chefs, the UK public could also benefit from the fresh produce and have it delivered direct into their homes. To complement this new service, Durham Box was asked by CRT Packaging to design and supply an e-commerce packaging solution that would provide the Ethical Shellfish Company’s new customers with an excellent first impression. “Since Coronavirus hit the UK in March 2020 we have had to think on our feet and reinvent,” said the Ethical Shellfish Company’s founder, Guy Grieve. “We are now very proud to say that as well as supplying our restaurant market, we are also delivering our top quality ethically fished shellfish and other produce direct to home cooks. We
6
deliver to our customers with just the same respect and care as we do our chefs and are so excited to be helping people create Michelin standard meals within their own homes! Commenting on Durham Box’s packaging solution, he added: “It was important that we paired with a company who could provide e-commerce packaging to meet the same top quality as the shellfish we provide. It was critical that the packaging would ensure that the shellfish and other products arrived with the customer in the same condition as when they left us. Durham box was recommended to us by CRT Packaging to supply the required packaging - it was a good call, as they have excelled in meeting our expectations and the feedback from our customers has been superb.” Named as one of the fastest growing companies in the North East, Durham Box make in excess of 40 million products per year from their 120,000 sqm factory. Central to their offering is a Nozomi C18000 single pass, ultra high speed LED inkjet
corrugated packaging press, providing Durham Box with the ability to produce short run, well designed corrugated boxes for e-commerce businesses and start-ups, printed with 100% low migration food safe inks. “With the Ethical Shellfish Company being one of CRT Packaging’s longstanding customers, we were delighted to be asked to provide an e-commerce packaging solution. As the demand for high quality e-commerce packaging continues unabated, we are actively supporting businesses to diversify in the pandemic by working quickly to sample and produce final packaging,” said Durham Box’s business development directorPOS, Andy Smith. “Many businesses like the Ethical Shellfish Company have been quick to respond and reinvent their offering - our own response needs to be equally quick and efficient. It has been a pleasure working with a company that, despite these challenging times, has been able to offer something different. We are delighted the packaging matched their high expectations and that of their customers.” www.crt-packaging.co.uk www.durhambox.co.uk

ASHGATE LAUNCHES NEW FASTBIND PUREVA NEO “In just a few years PUR binding has become the de facto standard for short run book binding”, says Lewis Price, Managing Director, Ashgate Automation. “It has become one of the most profitable products that printers can offer. This means that as runs of on demand perfect bound and hard cover books get shorter and shorter, printers are choosing to bring this type of work in house due to time constraints, more control and eliminating set up and transport costs. At the same time, customers realise the benefits of PUR binding for the strength of the bind and improved quality. “ At under £8000 + VAT, the NEO it is an attractive investment for any print shop to take advantage of PUR technology while having the option of EVA hot melt binding in the same machine. It is an all in one machine for all binding needs, soft and hard cover books for higher margins and a versatile product range, tear off pads with no adjustments for form, size or paper type. With traditional PUR machines, maintenance can be expensive and time consuming, making it hard to ensure a reliable finishing process in order to meet deadline. PUREVA NEO’s innovative glue mechanism is easily cleaned or even changed thanks to economical glue cartridges making it possible to change from PUR to EVA in seconds. It
uses an electronic adjustable temperature control with a single button operation between glue types. It also has a new PGO Microcut roughener for coated paper stocks which provides an optimised cutting pattern that increases glue penetration for better binding strength. Unlike other spine rougheners that grind the spine creating lots of noise and dust, the PGO opens the paper grain with very little noise and almost no paper dust. The NEO has a production speed of 1-3 books a minute with a min/max binding thickness of 0.1 -45mm and a binding length of up to 455mm and height of 140/320mm. Its machine dimensions are 30 x 1080 x600mm
It complements the PUREVA SMART PUR and EVA semi-automated binder. “This workstation meets the demands of our customers who want ease of operation, consistency, speed and clever use of automation for longer runs, although it is equally efficient for single copies upward,” said Lewis Price. Ashgate has introduced the PUREVA SMART at an attractive price of £15,000 +VAT. The PUREVA SMART and the PUREVA NEO work well in conjunction with the Casematic A46Z, Fastbind’s first semi-automated cover maker. It offers a wide range of possibilities. As well as personalised covers for books and albums, it produces restaurant menus, ring or conference binders, luxury cases and more from A6 to 45 x 45cm. The automation makes the operator’s work more accurate and covers and cases can be produced quickly with no set up time. A vacuum maintains the sheet in place during position. The guides are automatically lifted and the air table assist moves the cover around. The folding unit uses a mechanical clamp to turn the edges. The Casematic A46A is also available as a complete floor standing work station with ergonomic sliding side tables, one each side. www.ashgate.co.uk
CANON LABEL STREAM 4000 NOW PANTONE CAPABLE Canon has announced that the LabelStream 4000 series is the first UV inkjet press to have been certified ‘PANTONE® Capable’ by PANTONE LLC, having assessed the press’s colour gamut relative to the full range of PANTONE® colours. The certificate confirms that, with the LabelStream 4000, customers can reliably and consistently produce an exceptionally wide range of PANTONE® colours. The PANTONE® Capable certificate acknowledges that the LabelStream 4000 series, a four to six colour, industrial scale, UV inkjet label press can cover 1,740 (81.3%) of the 2,140 PANTONE® Solid Formula Guide coated colours, using the five colour CMYKO ink set, by adopting a Delta E 2000 < 1.5 absolute tolerance. Applying a Delta E of 2, enables label converters to extend the PANTONE® colour coverage to 96% with only five on-press colours. Using Xaar 2001 printhead technology, the LabelStream 4000 series deploys a highly pigmented ink set to enlarge the colour gamut and deliver an improved level of colour vibrancy and saturation. Thanks to the recently introduced orange ink channel, customers can further extend the CMYK gamut in the yellow, red and orange areas without compromising print speed
8
or reliability and achieve consistent high quality output. The certification verifies that converters can now accurately simulate and digitally print an extensive number of colours on the LabelStream 4000, confidently meeting customer demands for consistency and quality, and opening up new application opportunities. Such accurately matched colours will also support the ongoing transition from conventional to digital production by eliminating the need for lengthy set-up processes to replicate colours that may have previously been out of scope. Crit Driessen, VP and Head of Digital Packaging, Canon Production Printing, comments: “When we introduced the LabelStream 4000, we were
confident that the press surpassed the capabilities of many conventional and digital presses to accurately depict a large range of spot colours. With this Pantone Capable certificate, our customers can have the same confidence that, with its achievable colour gamut and performance, the LabelStream will reliably deliver the print quality and productivity needed for a sustainable digital label business.” In 2020, the LabelStream 4000 was also acknowledged by the German Fogra Research Institute for Media Technology as the first multicolour digital press to be certified according to the Process Standard Digital (PSD) Print Check based on the Fogra 55 7-colour reference gamut. www.canon.co.uk • www.pantone.com

FASTEST EVER IMAGEPROGRAF CAD PRINTER Canon is at the forefront of innovation and its latest introduction is a testament to this. For fast-paced businesses working to tight deadlines, the new Canon imagePROGRAF TZ-30000 Series combines high speed output with an abundance of features to support continuous productivity and efficiency. With excellent media handling and the scope to produce high-quality applications including CAD/GIS drawings, renderings, maps and posters, this robust printer is the ideal choice for customers in architecture, engineering, construction and manufacturing, as well as professional print service providers and copy shops. For an even more efficient workflow, the multifunctional imagePROGRAF TZ-30000 MFP Z36 integrates the printer with a precision scanner in one device. Printing at speeds of four A1 CAD pages per minute, this newest model is the fastest in the imagePROGRAF Series. With 700ml high-capacity ink tanks and dual roll feeding, it maximises output and minimises downtime, comfortably handling production volumes between 300 and 500 square metres a month, supported by Direct Print Plus workflow management software and a highcapacity stacker holding up to 100 A0 sheets. Designed for maximum productivity, this printer series comes with ‘hot swap’ either for media rolls or for inks, making it the first system in its category to enable users to replenish media and ink on the fly during printing. The smart roll set takes the guesswork out of media loading; the user simply places the roll into the feeder and the printer does the rest automatically. From the moment the print button is clicked, the first A1 CAD print can be in the user’s hands within 19 seconds. Solutions are also implemented for a seamless experience. The CPP printer driver and CPP Publisher Select job submission tools help to
achieve efficient printing with reduced misprints by monitoring the media width and the remaining amount of media before printing.
EXCEPTIONAL CANON PRINT QUALITY
The new printer uses Canon’s superior LUCIA TD ink technology, enabling high-quality output from CAD drawings to maps and posters, on a wide range of coated and uncoated media. Fine black lines and text can be reproduced clearly and with minimal feathering, even on uncoated media. Furthermore, due to the weather resistance of the inks, vivid colours are prevented from fading, even when using inexpensive, plain inkjet paper.
IMPROVED DESIGN AND SECURITY Space-saving, ergonomic console design means that operations such as ink tank and media roll changes happen at the front of the imagePROGRAF TZ-30000, while completed prints are removed from the top of the device. The MFP Z36 model packs even greater functionality into a smaller footprint, thanks to the integration of a high-quality multi-function scanner with dual LED light source system. This MFP model is easy to install and particularly suited to smaller
office spaces. It comes with a large free-position touchscreen with easy-to-use preview functions and rich image editing capability. For optimum security, all file data can be erased from the hard disk once each print job is completed, and optional PIN code and interface security can be used to prevent unauthorised access. Commenting on the launch of the new imagePROGRAF TZ-30000 Series, Joe Courts, Head of Product at Canon UK & IE , says: “In developing the new imagePROGRAF TZ-30000 Series, we set out to address a number of typical frustrations faced by users. This fully featured production printer balances productivity and efficiency, slashing large format print and finishing times and helping customers to deliver on the tightest deadlines. I’m certain that this latest addition to the imagePROGRAF family raises the bar for customers and will match the growing demands of any business needing streamlined and hassle-free large format print production.” The new imagePROGRAF TZ-30000 and imagePROGRAF TZ-30000 MFP Z36 will be available from Canon through Canon’s sales channel and selected channel partners from May 2021. www.canon.co.uk
A WISE CHOICE: AFFORDABLE QUALITY SUBSTRATES When choosing the print substrates to produce a box set of children’s story books for retail, print consultant David Arkell, working on behalf of publisher Tricorn Books, had no hesitation in selecting three Antalis products he knew would offer affordability without compromising quality. The Wise Bear Stories is a box set of six children’s storybooks written by author Scott Cranfield. They cover a range of topics to help children “dissolve anxieties, develop confidence and master their emotions”. Targeted at families and schools, they are designed to help raise happy, confident and independent children. As the books were to be retailed, it was important to consider both aesthetics and affordability, and finding the right print substrates was key to meeting these criteria.
12
For the slip case, David selected Invercote G, a one-sided solid bleached board with an ultra-smooth surface, commenting, “It’s a good, substantial product that holds up very well as a slip case”. The cover was printed on Claro Silk 350gsm, which David has used many times before
on account of its reliability. Claro Silk is part of the Claro range of high bulk, high white papers with a unique feel. For the text pages, Edixion Offset 170gsm was used for its good value and, according to David, its “lovely crisp bluey-whiteness” that prints well. An initial run of 1,000 sets was litho printed and a second smaller run of 500 was printed digitally. “The great thing about these Antalis papers is that they run brilliantly on both litho and digital presses, so we were able to use the same stock for both runs”, commented David. Both Tricorn Books and the books’ author were delighted with the finished result which they were able to pitch at just the right price point. The box set of books can be purchased from the dedicated website The Wise Bear Stories. www.antalis.co.uk

REVOLTION OF SUPER-RESOLUTION
With AI potential, Martin Christie uncovers the power of a super-resolution — upsampling images four times without losing quality.
T
he printed image’s power has long been a running theme in this column; thankfully, it remains a truth. When the onset of digital technology started, many predicted it would be the end of anything committed to ‘old fashioned’ paper. Of course, the electronic revolution has meant that pictures can be captured, transmitted and shared in previously unimaginable quantities. Still, the very volume and the instant ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ nature of so many of them makes them as disposable as yesterday’s headlines. Just how many of today’s top internet images will stand the test of time remains to be judged by future generations, but fortunately, the previous technology of photography has left us some priceless insights into not so distant history. Helped by modern techniques of enhancing colour and detail, those memories have now been brought more up to date, as you may have seen last month in the restoration of the Victorian soldier, a veteran of the Crimean War, in the middle of the nineteenth century. Back then, taking photographs was in the hands of a handful of specialists using cumbersome equipment, and processing was done by hand, often in a makeshift tent on the spot. Despite the difficulties, it’s estimated that over a million photographs were taken a little later during the four years of the American Civil War. Though many have survived to provide a unique visual record, most of the glass negatives were recycled to fill panes in greenhouses to be lost forever. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Kodak company invented and introduced the box camera, with its roll of negatives, meaning that shortly photography would be in the hands of the general public, and the days of many individual portrait studios would be numbered. John Swartz knew the writing was on the wall, and he was open to any opportunity to bolster his business in Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas. So he was grateful when in November 1900, five apparently wealthy, well-dressed strangers came to sit for him. He had no idea his photograph would eventually be seen so widely and still reproduced long after the old Wild West had disappeared into the cowboy books. He was, however, so pleased with the picture that he printed a large copy and put it in a frame in his window as an advertisement. It caught the attention of local detective Charlie Scott who immediately recognised some of the faces and notified the famous Pinkerton Agency who had been searching for notorious train robbers Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Longabaugh — better known to us as legends Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The rest, as they say, is history, although with a little bit of artistic licence from Hollywood. The peril of the unexpected consequences of published images is, therefore, nothing new. However, now with digital imagery and social media, it affects everyone with a mobile device — not just the rich and infamous. Fortunately, for most, the results are not as terminal as they were for the members of the Hole in the Wall Gang. The reason such images have survived, and are still of sufficient quality to be enhanced, is because they were real hard copies, whether in negative or positive form, even if many of those who had them taken didn’t always appreciate their future value. Almost the opposite seems to be true of digital files. As so few use them to realise how fragile and short-lived they may be, rely, as they do, on algorithms they do not really understand as well as power and processors, all of which may one day fail them. Then there is the sheer volume of content to deal with. I first heard the term Digital Asset Management twenty years ago. At the time, I didn’t appreciate how important it would become. But mention DAMs today, and I would guess few would really know what it meant, even among those who should know better. If you have spent any time with a friend or a customer searching vainly for a particular picture on a mobile phone, then you will know exactly why it is important, and why nobody bothers to use it until it’s too late. I still have boxes of old 35mm negatives, which I can still print from or scan to restore to former glory because they are preserved in their original state, but I have 14
lots of more recent JPGs which are beyond any worthwhile restoration, and more that have just disappeared somewhere on failed hard drives, and redundant memory sticks. Even if I’ve found an old JPG, I’m disappointed to find I’ve only saved a low-resolution email version and not the larger original, so it’s pretty pointless trying to update it because it’s not going to look any better. So, like most professional photographers, some years ago, I wised up and started shooting in RAW, saving that nondestructive file and only editing a JPG or TIFF copy. That way, there was going to be an original ‘negative’ to go back to. With improving software performance over the years, it was becoming possible to start again from the beginning. How often have you wished you could do that rather than save multiple files with different versions and titles? Most customer files, of course, are not in RAW and have already been destructively edited by them or the device they are using. By destructive, we mean an action that cannot APRIL 2021 • QUICK PRINT PRO
PIXEL PROPHET be undone, and there is only a limited amount of first aid you can do to make it any better for print. Even if there was a half-decent original camera file, it has probably been deleted, overwritten or just lost in the digital jungle that is most memory banks. Obviously, your average customer is not expected to understand RAW files — but then that’s your professional advantage. That’s why you are here, to give advice as well as service. And if you have the chance to be proactive, suggest an option for shooting. For example, it’s worth being aware that most reasonable quality cameras and some phones will shoot both RAW and JPG sideby-side. The user doesn’t even have to make the effort of handling RAW; they can just save it and play with the JPG. Then, if needed, they can send you both, and you can match the edits of one with the better quality other. The magic of RAW is that you haven’t committed any definite properties on it until you chose to. All image files are based on a number of pixels — initially those of the source camera or scanner. When you open the file in Photoshop or any other photo editing suite, you confirm those pixel dimensions as solid fact, as well as other critical settings. Anything you then do, reducing or enlarging, altering exposure values etc., is to one degree or another affecting the file’s quality, so it’s a bit of a trade-off. With RAW editing, you can adjust all the options before you open or save it, and this is a significant advantage for digital files. I’ve always been a fan of Adobe Bridge, much underexploited and misunderstood in the industry, as it’s so much more than a browser as it was in its early days and plays a powerful role in RAW editing. In previous columns, I have shown how the camera RAW filter can still be used for any file already open in Photoshop, but then that file has already been rasterised, so any adjustments are postprocessing, and while it’s still a valuable option, there is a much better one with Bridge. By right-clicking, you can open files directly from Bridge into Camera RAW; in fact, you can set preferences to do that by default. Most importantly, you can open multiple files, which will appear in a film strip below the individual images to enable batch processing rather than the more laborious one-at-time Photoshop option. Adjustments to one file can be synchronised with another or individually tweaked to suit. In this way, it operates much like Adobe Lightroom, which uses the same processing engine. While I use Lightroom a lot, it is much more geared to a photographer’s workflow, where lots of similar photos need to be handled, than the print studio, where there may be fewer files but more variety. Bridge also opens folders and creates thumbnails of all the contents, as well as detailed information data like size, date created, origin etc., of all files rather than Lightroom, which can’t include PDFs, InDesign, Word files and the like. It displays the folders in the sequence they are on the hard drive, so it’s much easier to follow the trail to find things and has a powerful search engine, especially if keywords have QUICK PRINT PRO • APRIL 2021
been added to files to make it easier to identify them. I’ve mentioned much of this before — Bridge has proved invaluable in cutting through the maze of files and folders in pursuit of that holy grail of Digital Asset Management. But Adobe has gone further in making it a powerful editing tool in its own right by going directly into Camera RAW without the need to open Photoshop with all the demands on computer performance that entails. In fact, it’s almost as if they reacted to this column of a few months back when I suggested rather rashly that I was somewhat underwhelmed with some of the recent, more trivial updates. This time, in March, they’ve come up with a biggie, which even after a few weeks is getting rave reviews across the board on line, including those ordinarily critical of Adobe’s on-going subscription policy. Other software manufacturers have been nibbling away at the industry leader, so this time they have hit back big time, and for once, something that will be really useful for print output. For the last two years, Lightroom and Photoshop have had automated image enhance features; now, at least for the moment in Camera RAW, there is Super Resolution. And this is not a simple marketing slogan; this really works. Over the years, there have been a number of plug-ins to improve pixel performance, particularly when there seemed to be a particular limit to the number of megapixels you could squeeze into a camera. They all worked to some degree but mainly limited by the number and quality of dots plugged in in the first place. In fact, last month, I was explaining how interpolation worked, sampling surrounding pixels to expand output. Now, exploiting the ever-improving potential of AI, Super Resolution pushes the boundaries of resampling a step further to at least double the size of a digital image and possibly take it up four times without losing quality. At the moment, this can only be done opening Camera RAW through Bridge, not Photoshop, for the reasons mentioned before, though it will no doubt also appear in Lightroom very shortly. This way, it gives sampling the best chance of manipulating pixels without any possible deterioration. By a right-click on the thumbnail in Camera RAW, you get another option to Enhance and a further dialogue box for Super-Resolution together with a preview and estimated time taken — generally about five minutes. Although it is intended for camera RAW files, it can be used for any pixel file, and after only a brief trial has real benefits for print enlargement. It will take a 6MP phone picture up to 12MP, for example. While that in itself will not make it a better picture, working with a bigger file in RAW or Photoshop makes a big difference because you’ve got many more pixels to play with. It creates an Enhanced copy, named, so you know exactly which file is which. It can then be opened in Photoshop and compared with the original. Still early days, but I can see this is going to be a big help to the print shop in the continuing challenge to do that little bit extra that the average customer can’t do at home or on their phone. I’ll update you next month when I’ve had a chance to try SuperResolution of more varied images, but I strongly recommend you try it yourselves and look forward to any feedback. 15

SUSTAINABILITY
SPROUT
SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS TRENDS
CEO and founder of Sprout, Michael Stausholm, is frequently interviewed by international media. He’s got great expertise and knowledge about sustainability and business.
A
s sustainability becomes a need to have in all businesses, changes such as downsizing office space, and offering hybrid working and virtual meetings may be preferable even when face to face meetings are possible again, because it all helps to reduce our carbon footprint and save cost, says Michael Stausholm This year, sustainability is on the agenda higher than ever before. The concerted move towards more conscious consumerism has been on its way for at least a decade but the pandemic has forced us to take the environment even further into account.
1 SUSTAINABILITY WILL MOVE FROM A NICE TO HAVE TO A NEED TO HAVE
Sustainability will no longer just be nice to have for business i.e. something you put on your website because it’s trendy or sounds good. Instead, it will be crucial for businesses. With the increased focus on the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals and with a rising demand from consumers, businesses will need to put their good intentions into action. For example, an eco-friendly product is core to what we have at Sprout World – pencils that turn into plants after use. But our goal for this year is to become even more sustainable. It’s a work in progress; no business can be perfect or 100% sustainable to begin with but as long as you move forward towards environmental improvements, you are on the right track.
2 THERE WILL BE A CLEAN-UP OF GREENWASHING
Greenwashing is designed to make people believe that your company is doing more to protect the environment than it really is. It’s a common way for businesses to brand themselves as being good for the planet. But somehow, the pandemic has made us all more allergic to brands that sugar coat their businesses. In 2021, we will see more demand for proof of what lies behind the words you use as a company. For example, expect to provide substantial detail and clarity to questions such as: ‘What do you mean when you state that your products are “biodegradable”, “eco-friendly” or “recyclable”? Many businesses use these terms, but can you explain exactly what they mean and how your product, service or business meets those standards?
3 PRODUCTION WILL BE BROUGHT CLOSER TO HOME
With the pandemic, I’ve seen many companies reconsider where they source their products, and this will continue in 2021. A large majority of consumer products are still made in China and this has shown to be a huge problem. Firstly, with manufacturing coming to a halt as a result of pandemic lockdowns in Asia, and secondly, companies have realised that they’ve lost control of how their products are produced. Low cost production is no longer that attractive if you make them at the cost to ethics and the environment. That’s why we will see many European and American companies pulling their production back to their continents in 2021. It’s easier to supervise and there will be more consumer demand for locally produced products.
4 IMPLEMENTATION OF BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY WILL BRING TRANSPARENCY TO SUSTAINABILITY
Adopting blockchain technology will now be highly sought after for sustainability driven companies. In fact, it’s something we’re implementing at Sprout World because it means that anyone will be able to see where every component i.e. the wood, graphite or seeds in the pencils come from, where the pencils are then produced and from there, the journey into the customer’s hands. 20
Put simply, blockchain provides a verifiable record as to who buys what from whom. This means that a company’s claims of being resource-positive or reducing their environmental impact can be counter-checked and verified
5 HYBRID WORKING AND VIRTUAL MEETINGS WILL CONTINUE TO DOMINATE TO FURTHER THE GREEN AGENDA
The pandemic forced us to rethink business travel, meetings, trade fairs and conferences. For years, many of us have spent enormous amounts of time and money on strengthening our business relationships by meeting in person. 2020 showed us how much remote work and meet-ups can do for us. It can’t replace all interactions of physical togetherness, and we still need that, but we’ve realised that we can be much more selective with how we spend our resources. Many business owners have had to ask whether big, expensive office facilities really are a necessity with the increase in remote work? At Sprout World, we are looking into the possibility of quitting our sizeable (and often half empty) office for renting co-working offices when necessary. In fact, for sustainability driven companies, downsizing office space, and offering hybrid working and virtual meetings may even be preferable even when face to face meetings are possible again, because it all helps to reduce our carbon footprint. Collectively, we will save CO2 by not commuting on a daily basis, and this will prove to be a major benefit for the planet. www.sproutworld.com

PRINT-PROVEN SOLUTION PLANNED VACCINATION PASSPORT Any Universal Vaccination Passport solution will need to have both a digital and physical element or it will not be fully accessible according to Martin Ruda, Group MD at the TALL Group of Companies. His warnings follow the announcement of a number of trials of domestic and international digital solutions which are mainly focussed on proprietary apps and smart phone technology. Martin explains: “The key to having a Universal Passport Solution is that is can be used by everyone, everywhere. Existing solutions being put forward all rely on countries having digitised medical records, which many do not, and require the vaccine certificate to be accessed on a smart phone that not everyone has. Little thought has gone into having a secure physical document beyond the use of a QR code which will work equally well, if robustly encrypted, on a secure document as well as a mobile phone screen.” “A successful solution will need to provide secure connectivity to a tangible, and universally accepted, document that is verified against the core authorities’ data, in our case the NHS.” His comments come as concerns are being raised
in Israel, who has almost completed its vaccination programme, about the ease of getting a forged vaccine certificate. According to media reports a black market for counterfeit vaccination certificate is already thriving on Telegram, where more than 100,000 users have joined groups that offer the forgeries at a price. However, Martin is confident that the technology
needed for a strong physical solution for this already exists. “Concerns around fraudulent documentation in developing countries is commonplace, one example being the risks perceived around the forging and counterfeiting of ballot papers in national and local elections. Our secure printing solutions support the requirements of the Ugandan government to address this, and closer to home the use of encrypted QR codes protect the UK’s cheque payments industry in its move from paper to digital cheque clearing. This technology can readily be used to create a small physical vaccine passport that immutably supports and integrates with a digital solution which we have the capability to deliver. “Our strategic partnership with Digital Cognate has helped us solve the issues regarding interoperability, integration and absolute trust in the digital source, as a result we are hoping to get a place at the table to discuss this with UK government and urge them not to try and reinvent the wheel. We have developed the necessary technology and it is tried and tested!” www.tallgroup.co.uk
ARE YOU READY FOR NATASHA’S LAW? BY DAYLE GUY, PRODUCT MANAGER, EPSON (UK) LTD
From October 2021 accurate labelling that clearly communicates allergens will be a legal requirement under Natasha’s Law. The law is being introduced to protect allergy sufferers and give them confidence in the food they buy. Currently food prepared on the premises in which it is sold does not have to display allergen information. Natasha’s Law will change that. It will require pre-packed food, sold on-site or off-site, to be individually labelled with a full list of ingredients and highlight allergens in the ingredients list. They can be identified by any suitable method including bold, italic, UPPERCASE and colour. Offering a complete onsite labelling solution that supports businesses as they prepare for the new legislation is Epson’s ColorWorks Series of colour label inkjet printers. It includes the ColorWorks C3500 that can easily customise and print small to medium volumes of colour labels. It features individual pigment ink cartridges that support fast drying, highly detailed labels that are smudge, water and fade resistant. The food safe pigment ink is long lasting, durable qualities make it perfect for a wide variety of environments. There is also the ColorWorks CW-C6000 that supports media widths, from 25.4mm to 112mm and boasts a wide range of media including textured paper. It can print anything from tiny labels for vaping liquid bottles, to large durable labels that are suitable for chemical drums. It offers high quality, high resolution, four colour print output as standard; along with colour matching functionality for impactful, on-demand colour labels. Wessex Labels Ltd has invested heavily in its own Tolarus NutriLabel software that excels in the management of full colour digital print. Fully compatible with Epson’s range of ColourWorks label printers, it is a proven tailored solution to meet the requirements of Natasha’s Law. As either a standalone system or linking with external software platforms like the established Saffron Food Management System, Tolarus NutriLabel has inbuilt capabilities of automated allergen read and display control features. Wessex Labels is currently working with a number of potential partners in offering a cloud based version of the Tolarus Nutrilabel system which should

HP’s recent online interior décor experience highlighted how digital printing technology can open up the colourful, diverse interior décor market for more businesses. Featuring presentations from designers, media experts, printing professionals and influencers, the webinar-style event was hosted by Terry Raghunath, HP’s Business Development Manager for Graphics Solutions Business.. The virtual event invited the audience to imagine, create and transform interior spaces by harnessing HP Latex and HP Stitch technology, and highlighted the opportunities that exist in terms of boosting print volumes and untapping new revenue streams. The audience was inspired by the very latest trends in décor from those at the forefront of the industry. More than 1500 attendees from across the globe - including Hawaii - logged into the event, including nearly 200 from the UK. As well as presentations from HP, there were interviews with industry experts, interior designers, Instagram sensations and customers. Feedback from the event has been incredibly positive. Shaun Holdom, Global Product Manager at Drytac, says: “There are plenty of webinars being hosted at the moment, but this was one of the best I’ve ever seen. HP and its partners provided great insight into how businesses are embracing print technology and delivering stunning interior décor products for end-users. The content was engaging and enlightening and the time whizzed by.” Mike Beese, Managing Director at DecTek, adds: “I attended the webinar and found it enlightening and informative - exactly what I would expect from the HP team!” With endless possibilities in the home and the workplace - as well as in public facing areas including healthcare and hospitality - interior design applications can be customised and personalised with digital print in an effective, and dynamic way. HP has a range of solutions specifically developed to produce outstanding work for the decorative print market, including HP Latex and HP Stitch printers. SAPPI AND HP INDIGO JOIN FORCES IN PACKAGING The demand for recyclable, paper-based packaging as a substitute for less sustainable materials is increasing. Sappi and digital printing leader HP Indigo have joined forces to meet the needs of a changing world. A paper-based solution from Sappi that renders additional special coatings or laminations superfluous was successfully verified for the HP Indigo digital printing.
DEMAND FOR SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING IS INCREASING
2020 European surveys (e.g. “European Packaging Preferences 2020” by Two Sides Europe) indicate that the type of packaging is a hugely important factor with consumers at the point of sale. Paper and cardboard packaging ranks highest with consumers for sustainability attributes including being home compostable (72%), better for the environment (62%) and easier to recycle (57%). Furthermore, paper or cardboard packaging is considered to be the most recycled material, with 30% of consumers believing the European recycling rate to be over 60% (with 85% of paper and cardboard packaging actually being recycled). Innovation leader Sappi has been a frontrunner in the development of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions for over ten years. “With our innovative functional paper packaging solutions we are offering a sustainable material based on renewable sources that can be recycled in the paper stream,” explains René Köhler, Head of New Business Development Packaging Solutions, Division Innovation & Sustainability, at Sappi Europe. This sustainable approach also extends to the various integrated functions of Sappi’s functional papers, such as barrier properties and heat-sealability. HP Indigo is continuously investing in solutions that improve packaging production sustainability. “HP Indigo is collaborating with Sappi to validate high-grade substrates that can meet our customers’ requirement to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment, while leveraging HP Indigo’s ability to deliver on-demand, high-quality packaging with minimal waste”, says Eli Mahal, Head of Labels and Packaging Product Marketing and Management at HP Indigo. The new challenges manufacturers will be facing include small product quantities from flourishing small labels and start-ups, increasing demand for faster production and delivery, an ever-increasing variety of products and a trend towards more personalised campaigns. The need for faster, customisable and reliable production procedures is becoming crystal clear.
EXPLOITING THE ADVANTAGES OF DIGITAL PRINTING HP Indigo took over the elaborate design of the pouches. At its Graphic Experience Centre in Barcelona, the three side seal soup pouches (130 mm x 86 mm) were given their individual design. The team developed the artwork for the pouches and six different and unique designs, that leverage
26
HP Indigo’s proprietary variable data printing (VDP) capabilities, came to life to meet the soups’ different vegetable flavours. For the printing process, a narrow-web HP Indigo 6K Digital Press was deployed, using HP Indigo’s full colour range, silver and special invisible yellow inks. In combination with Sappi’s cutting-edge material, the inks give the soup pouches their high-quality appearance. The amazing results demonstrate the unique digital printing capabilities that extend from various inks to variable data and personalisation with six different SKUs. The pouches were then finished by Bossar Packaging. The company specialises in the design and production of horizontal form-fill-seal equipment for manufacturing flexible packaging, such as spouted pouches, zippered pouches and sachets. The three side seal bottom-folded pouches were produced using Bossar’s fully servo-controlled machines belonging to the BMS series. This technology substitutes the traditional and standard single cam shaft. The control is provided by means of an intuitive touch screen, facilitating format change-over and adaptability to multiple formats. This is made possible by the servo technology, which enables independent movements of machine parts. Filling and sealing of a package are handled on the same packaging machine where filling takes place through the open-top part of the pouch. The technology guarantees outstanding efficiency as well as significant time and cost savings. A perfect finale for a production that meets the requirements of today’s flexible-packaging solutions. With the printing, finishing and sealing processes now being adaptable to small print runs, the industry can meet the requirements of new target groups that include small and medium-sized brands, enterprises and start-ups, as well as a new generation of customers who want more individually designed packaging solutions. By using Sappi’s Guard Gloss 4-OHG, customer demand for sustainable and recyclable solutions can also be taken into consideration. www.sappi-psp.com

INNOTECH PREDICTS A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR WIDE FORMAT Since the beginning of March we have seen the gradual easing of lockdown in the UK and there is a real determination for the economy to bounce back as quickly as possible. It feels like now is the time for many of the industries that have been put on hold by Covid-19 to look towards the future with justifiable positivity. Innotech Digital believes that print will play an important part in this recovery and the company will be launching a range of support schemes designed to help its customers and partners get back to business. Kieran Dallow, Marketing Manager for Innotech Digital, explains, “The wide format print and sign making industry is very much reliant on retail, hospitality, events, tourism and all those business sectors that have been in virtual hibernation for much of the last year. As the companies in these sectors take their first tentative steps back to normality, here at Innotech we are very positive that our industry will be front and centre in driving the market recovery across all these sectors. We are already seeing a return of commercial activity and economic growth and we want to share our upbeat vibes with our customers and partners across the UK.” The recovery process this time is likely to have some significant differences to previous occasions where the market has recovered from an economic depression. Dallow adds, “Despite falling infection rates and high uptake of the vaccine, we will continue to live with some restrictions that could continue to have an impact on revenue and margin for some time to come. Throughout all of this, the need for communicating positive and informative marketing, sales and business messages will be critical and for this reason, print is going to be a vitally important
28
component of the recovery.” Step by step, the UK economy will open up and our ability to shop, socialise and do all the things we have been missing over the last year will be available to us. Many economic predictions are suggesting that the overall economy will bounce back well and this will have a knock-on effect on many industries, not least print. Dallow continues, “We are very excited to be getting back to business and to share this enthusiasm, Innotech will be launching a range of initiatives and support schemes to help the industry get back to profitability as soon as possible. We will announce the first of these schemes in time for the next lockdown easing step, which we all hope will be in mid April.” As we come out of lockdown, there is also a feeling that we have an opportunity to make things better than they were before. According to the European Environment Agency, the Coronavirus crises further highlights the urgent need to
address the environmental challenges that Europe faces. They say this will benefit society’s general health and well being as well as the environment itself. “This is why it is important that the print industry can take this chance to transform itself in a truly eco-friendly sector that not only supplies environmentally sustainable print, but also controls waste through effective recycling programmes,” says Dallow. He concludes, “After a really difficult year, it is great to once again be feeling confident and upbeat about the future and we really want to share this positivity with the market. We know that the support schemes we have planned will be welcome news for our customers. Our aim at Innotech is to help the wide format print and display industry get back to business and back to profitability as quickly and as environmentally responsibly as possible.” www.innotechdigital.com

DIGITUFF NOW AVAILABLE WITH ANTIMICROBIAL SURFACE
DigiTuff the tear resistant, digital, synthetic sheet from Premier is now produced with an anti-microbial surface. Biomaster is the new additive that is used within the surface coating in the production of DigiTuff. Biomaster works by binding with the bacteria cell’s wall disrupting cell growth by up to 99.99%. The Biomaster utilises silver ions, a natural antibacterial, that inhibits enzyme production stopping the bacteria cells’ ability to produce energy. Biomaster also interrupts the bacteria’s DNA, preventing cell replication. John Vic, Premier Sales Director – Digital Media comments “Over the last 12 months there has been a significant increase in demand for more hygienic products and solutions. Many of our synthetic suppliers are sequentially looking for ways to improve the user friendliness and cleanliness of their products, DigiTuff is the first and others will follow.” DigiTuff is optimised for use on both colour and mono digital print processes and the inclusion of Biomaster within the surface coating does not impact the
KJS MAIL ENHANCES BINDERY WITH HORIZON
Following a thorough bindery review to assess productivity and ways to further streamline operation KJS Mail has invested in a Horizon booklet production line. The Peterborough print and direct mail specialist chose a new Horizon VAC-1000 collator to integrate with a pre-owned Horizon SPF-200s bookletmaker. A MKU-54 mobile knife unit was added to complete endorsed folding. Stuart Speechley, Managing Director, explains: “We needed a new stitcher and collator to streamline our digital and litho print. We also wanted a solution that would endorse A4 booklets to A5 because a lot of the mail we manage is C5. We were looking to speed up the process, reduce the manual intervention and increase capacity. “By bringing our capabilities up to date we knew we could be more efficient and experience less downtime. We have just put an 80,000 run through the system and it has saved us many hours. We can let it run and that means our team can turn their attention to other systems at the same time.” The Horizon VAC-1000 takes advantage of Horizon’s unique feeding technology and continues the Horizon development concept of ‘high speed’, ‘high performance’ and ‘high quality’. It performs a wide range of applications with flexible but powerful programming and user-friendly operation. The 4,500bph Horizon SPF-200a bookletmaker combines stitching and folding with the ability to handle sheets up to 640mm in length. JDF-ready, it offers instant set-ups via a large icon-based colour touchscreen for user-friendly operation. The screen can be used for on the run fine tune adjustments as well as the storage and recall of up to 200 jobs. It runs with the Horizon MKU-54 mobile knife unit. Choosing Horizon was an easy decision for Stuart: “We have invested in Horizon before and know and trust the build quality, production reliability and product consistency. Our team are also used to working with Horizon’s touchscreen set up so were immediately familiar with its operation and found it easy to run.” www.ifsl.uk.com

TAYPRINT REPLACES SCREEN PRINTING WITH KORNIT Kornit Digital have announced Tayprint has implemented the Kornit Avalanche HD6 system for efficient, versatile direct to garment (DTG) apparel production on demand. This technology effectively replaces the use of screen printing within their operation, reducing their cost per print while making short runs profitable, eliminating inventory and resource waste, speeding production, and ensuring nearly unlimited design capabilities, applied to a broad array of materials, using a single eco-friendly ink set. While Tayprint predominantly serves as a provider of large format digital printing, delivering approximately 500,000 square metres of imprinted product annually, they had established a screen printing operation, as well, generating roughly £200,000 in t-shirt sales per year. While this provided a strong profit channel, screens offered limited growth potential, as order volumes were shrinking, customers demanded quick turnaround, graphic capabilities were limited, and setting up was a drain on both labour and materials. Each of these drawbacks are addressed by Kornit’s on-demand digital production technology, which enables suppliers to imprint apparel in any quantity, using a single step process, completing the process in mere minutes. “Screens were no longer economical, and Kornit provided the reliable, robust solution and support we needed,” says James Miller, General Manager at Tayprint. “The finished garment has terrific hand feel, for a better product that’s easy to sell to our customers. With this fast, efficient digital technology in place, we expect to expand this part of our business, and have produced a model to integrate with online business start-ups, which would’ve been a poor fit for screen based print operations.” “Today’s consumers are increasingly thinking and operating in digital terms, and it’s on suppliers to evolve and meet their demands using digital means,” says Chris Govier, KDEU Managing Director. “Screens will always have their place, suited to bulk orders of graphically simple products, but producers need a capability for on-demand production at the speed of digital, which is what Kornit provides. Tayprint is clearly intent on growing their business by giving the market what it demands, and we have no doubt they will succeed.” www.kornit.com

THE JOKE’S ON YOU
READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE? CANVAS FOR NEW BUSINESS
I used to work in an art supply store. We sold artists’ canvas by the yard, and you could get it in either of two widths: 36 inches or 48 inches. Customer: “Can you please cut some canvas for me?” Me: “Certainly, what width?” Customer (confused and slightly annoyed): “Scissors?”
MY DAUGHTER
The police arrested my daughter claiming she had burnt our house down but it was arson.
LAUGHING OUT LOUD
Do they allow loud laughing in Hawaii or just a-low-ha?
IT’S ALL IN THE NAME
If your name is on the building, you’re rich. If your name is on your desk, you’re middle-class. If your name is on your shirt, you’re neither of the first two!
THEY SAY I’M CONDESCENDING
People say I’m condescending. That means I talk down to people. Always loved a good statue...
TOP JOKE
Just got back from Trafalgar Square. Lord Nelson was about 5ft 6” tall. His statue is actually around 17ft 4”. That’s Horatio of about 3:1.
TRUE LOVE
Boyfriend: Honey, on this Valentine’s Day, I want to tell you something. I’m not rich like Robert. I don’t have a mansion like Gary. I don’t have a Porsche like Martin. But I do love you and I want to marry you. Girlfriend: Oh dear, I love you too! What was that you said about Martin?
EASTER FUNNIES
What kind of jewellery does the Easter Bunny wear? 14 Carrot Gold. One Easter, a father was teaching his son to drive
I think there’s something wrong with my girlfriend.
when out of nowhere a rabbit jumped on the road. Slamming on the breaks, the son said, “I nearly ruined Easter! I almost ran over the Easter Bunny.” His father replied, “It’s okay son—you missed it by a hare.” Where does Valentine’s Day come after Easter? In the dictionary. What happened to the Easter Bunny when he misbehaved at school? He was eggspelled! Why shouldn’t you tell an Easter egg a joke? It might crack you up! How does the Easter Bunny stay healthy? Eggsercise, specifically hare-obics. How many Easter eggs can you put in an empty basket? Only one — after that it’s not empty anymore! Why did the Easter egg hide? Because he was a little chicken. Why won’t Easter eggs go out at night? They don’t want to get beat up! Why did the Easter Bunny have on a hat? Because he was having a bad hare day. Where does the Easter Bunny like to eat breakfast? On the hop! What do you call a bunny with fleas? Bugs Bunny. What is the Easter Bunny’s favourite kind of music? Hip Hop. How does the Easter Bunny dry off? With a hare dryer. Why did the Easter Bunny cross the road? Because the chicken had his eggs! What do you call a mischievous Easter egg? A practical yolker. Why was the Easter Bunny arrested? For hareassment. What kind of stories does the Easter Bunny like best? The ones with hoppy endings. What do you call a line of rabbits jumping backwards? A receding hare-line. How does the Easter Bunny keep his fur in place? With hare spray. How can you tell which rabbits are oldest in a group? Just look for the grey hares. Why did the Easter Bunny have to fire the duck? Because he kept quacking the eggs!
She’s hallucinating.
What do you call a sleepy Easter egg? Eggs-austed. How do you make Easter easier? Replace the “t” with an “i”. Why are bunnies the luckiest animals? Because they each have four rabbits’ feet! How do you make a rabbit stew? Make it wait for three hours! Why was Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail? Because he’s too young to drive! Why can’t a rabbit’s nose be 12 inches long? Because then it would be a foot! I was going to tell you a joke about an egg, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. What do you call an Easter egg from outer space? Egg-stra terrestrial. Where does the Easter Bunny go when he needs a new tail? To a re-tail store. How does the Easter Bunny travel? By hare-plane. Therapist: What’s been up lately? Chocolate bunny: I don’t know Doc, I just feel so hollow inside. 364 days of the year: Do NOT eat anything you find on the ground. Easter: Go and search in the park for sweets and follow a strange giant bunny to his home.
KNOCK, KNOCK, IT’S EASTER
Knock, knock! Who’s there? Heidi. Heidi who? Heidi the eggs around the house. Knock, knock! Who’s there? Wendy. Wendy who? Wendy Easter egg hunt taking place. Knock, knock! Who’s there? Arthur. Arthur who? Arthur any more Easter eggs to decorate? Knock, knock! Who’s there? Police. Police who? Police hurry up and find all the eggs. Knock, knock! Who’s there? Sherwood. Sherwood who? Sherwood like to have as many Easter eggs as you! Knock, knock! Who’s there? Boo. Boo who? Don’t cry, Easter will be back next year! Knock, knock! Who’s there? Butcher. Butcher who? Butcher eggs in one basket! Knock, knock! Who’s there? Some bunny. Some bunny who? Some bunny’s been eating all my Easter eggs!
She keeps telling me…
…she’s seeing other people.
